Hello darkness my old friend… Yes, yes, it’s dark when you get up in the mornings, and darker still when you get home at night, but it doesn’t have to be cause for doom and despair – there’s the excuse it gives us to cosy up on the sofa watching television with a takeaway, for a start. This month we’ll be tuning into ITV’s thriller Liar, which promises to be unmissable, not least because it stars the very lovely Joanne Froggatt. You can see what she has to say about the series in our exclusive interview. On the subject of getting cosy, and in honour of Wool Week later this month, we’ve also rounded up our favourite woollen interiors accessories: you’re welcome. And finally, the darker days have put the spotlight on lighting design. Forget traditional: as we discovered, the trend this season is for the spectacularly cutting edge. Illuminating stuff…

5-8 OCT REGENT’S PARK, NW1 It’s that time of year again… Showcasing 160 of the world’s leading galleries including, of course, north London’s finest, this much-loved art fair has become the go-to for art aficionados everywhere – and
not only those with money to burn. In fact, having started life as a selling exhibition, today Frieze has a reputation for attracting more perusers than purchasers. The absolute crème de la crème of international contemporary art on our doorstep. How lucky are we?

This London-based artist says it with flowers. Selftaught, Swinford paints intricate floral arrangements in a vibrant assault of colours – each canvas as immediate and eye-catching as the next. Her bounteous bouquets are set against patterned backdrops inspired by her own collection of antique
material swatches, from William Morris to Raoul Dufy to the Bauhaus, and are displayed in pattern-rich vases, which also draw upon her collection of Ming and Meissen porcelain pieces. These are the most beautiful of colour and pattern clashes.

B L AC K: AR C HITE C TUR E IN M ON O C H R O ME
9 OCT INTRODUCTION BY STELLA PAUL
The colour black is never going out of fashion. It is arguably the most dramatic hue there is. Combine the colour with striking architecture and you have some of the world’s most darkly beautiful buildings. Featuring over 150 diverse structures, from historical landmarks to modernist masterpieces, this is a must-have tome for those with a leaning towards the dark side – design-wise, at least. The book showcases the work of eminent 20th-century architects including Philip Johnson and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe alongside their contemporary counterparts such as Peter Marino, Sir David Adjaye and Jean Nouvel.

The match drew a TV audience of more than 50 million Americans and is widely considered a watershed moment for women’s tennis and the public acceptance thereof. But starring the hilarious Steve Carell and Emma Stone, we’d wager there’s plenty of funnies in between the fighting, both on and off court.

Okore is deeply disturbed by the effect that humanity is having on our environment – the ways in which we contribute to climate change and aggravate the natural cycle of life. In this, her third solo show at the October Gallery, the artist explores themes of transformation and the ephemerality of the natural world, taking as her starting point an old proverbial Igbo saying, which references the theatrical falling of bread fruit from the mother tree. Expect an intriguing display of richly textured, colourful sculptures that are as thought-provoking as they are incredibly intricate.

INTERVIEW
oanne Froggatt believes that television is in the middle of a renaissance. “It is in such a strong place; all the A-list movie stars are choosing to do it. The production values are so high that a six-episode series is kind of like doing a six-hour movie in terms of quality,” she explains. Which is one of the reasons she didn’t hesitate when she was approached about taking the lead role in Liar, the new thriller by the Williams brothers. That and the fact that the writers’ reputations go before them: “They are at a real high point in their careers, with the success of The Missing, it was just one of those things that I couldn’t say no to.” In fact, Jack and Harry Williams currently have two series going head to head, with Liar showing in the Monday 9pm ITV slot, and Rellik at the same time on BBC One. Though the two six-parters are very different, and worlds apart in terms of tone and structure, the pair will no doubt be thankful that the “renaissance” includes a viewing public who increasingly watch things on demand, so that if they miss one, they won’t miss out. Liar, which the Williams have described as most different from anything they have written before, stars Joanne as Laura, a teacher who is in the middle of a break-up as the series begins. “She is a strong and very complex character, which made it really interesting to play,” she explains. Ioan Gruffudd takes the male lead in the story which explores the devastating cost of deceit, after a seemingly innocent first date unravels into a complex web of lies. “The script was such a page turner, and I really didn’t know what to think by the end of the first episode. I met with the casting director and I begged him to tell me what happened,” Joanne says. “Anything that gets that reaction from me, I presume is going to get a similar response from an audience. I am really looking forward to seeing how people do react. It should be really good, I’m excited.” Joanne can’t reveal much about the story, but explaining more about what attracted her to the role,
says, “James Strong was our set up director and he had a very strong vision of how he wanted it to look, and he had this really cool concept for the lighting, and making the shots seem as though the audience were just peeking in, so that it has a really voyeuristic feel. It just feels really elevated from a normal TV drama.” It is a very different role for Joanne, who made her name as lady’s maid Anna in Downton Abbey. “I tend to be drawn to things that are different from what I have just done. Or something that I feel I have not done before – I like the challenge of that,” she explains. “I had never done a thriller before, so that was something that interested me. And I hadn’t even realised that until I read the script.” Downton was definitely a game changer for Joanne. She tells me that she originally accepted the role of Anna because she was keen to do more period drama. “Little did we know that it would become what it became. I am really pleased that it will always be a calling card for me, and I am very happy to have been a part of it,” she smiles. All the more so because of the Best Supporting Actress Golden Globe she was awarded for series 4, which included a rape storyline. She says: “It was such an honour, and a huge, huge deal to have been nominated. I was so thrilled and over the moon, that I felt like I had already won anyway. So then to actually receive the award… It was one of those times you dream of when you first think that you want to be an actor I guess, and I enjoyed every minute of it.”

INTERVIEW
“You’ve got to have a go at things in life. If you fail, that’s all right, but if you don’t try, you will never know” As far as acting aspirations go, Joanne tells me she knew from an early age that the industry was for her. “It’s all I can remember wanting to do since I was tiny. I used to watch a lot of movies as a kid with my brother, and I just wanted to be a part of all the adventures we were watching on the telly.” She joined a drama group at the age of 11, then went to stage school at 13, and started working at around 16. “I was very lucky that I fell into it at such a young age, and was able to build a career around it and have always been able to support myself financially,” she says. But she also recognises how lucky she was to have a family who supported her ambitions, despite not working in the industry themselves. “My parents have been enormously supportive. They have done everything within their power to let me have the opportunities that I have had.” In fact, Joanne credits her dad with giving her the best piece of advice she has ever been offered. “It’s a bit of a funny expression, it’s very Northern, it’s ‘you’ve got to chuck a brick and run after it’. Which basically means that you’ve got to have a go at things in life. If you fail, that’s all right, but if you don’t try, you will never know.” It has stuck with Joanne through the years, and even inspired her latest project. “I have just started up a production company and called it Run After It,” she grins. It is early days for Run After It, but Joanne is excited about the opportunities the venture presents. “The dream is to be making my own stuff, and this gives me an avenue to be able to create roles, rather than just sitting waiting for the phone to ring,” she explains. “It just felt like a very natural progression, and it means that I always have a project on now. In particular, I have two projects in the very early stages of development with two other production companies in the UK,” she adds. Aside from these very personal projects, Joanne has a supporting role in the film Mary Shelley with Elle 46 |

Fanning, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last month and is tipped for release in the UK next summer. “And then, I don’t know really – it’s a case of wait and see. It’s the first time I’ve said that in about eight years, so it is quite nice actually! There are some possibilities for next year, but nothing definite that I can speak of now.” She quite fancies the idea of more stage work, in particular comedy: “I would love to do some comedy on stage… There is nothing like the buzz of gaining a laugh live when you get your timing right.” A regular run in the West End would mean that she could spend more time with friends and family, and stay at home, for once. “There’s nothing like being in your own bed. And in my line of work that is not always a given.” And then there are the advantages of spending time in London. “I love that it is absolutely a world city. There are all shapes and sizes, and people from all over the world, it is such a melting pot. I find that exciting and comforting. It just reminds me that ultimately we are all the same.” Though some of us, I can’t help reflecting, are more talented than others. Liar continues on ITV, Mondays at 9pm and you can catch up on episodes via the ITV Player

EYE TO EYE No ordinary opticians, The Eye Place pride themselves on a bespoke service that uses state-of-the-art technology to provide a different level of eye care
Our eye health is something we all too often take for granted, only visiting an optician when our current prescription leaves us struggling to read, or when we fancy an upgrade on those designer specs. Yet our eyes are such a delicate part of the body, and can reveal a lot about our general health – even if they don’t feel any different – so it’s hard to overstate the importance of regular checks. Enter The Eye Place, an independently owned practice that manages to be both charmingly old-school and at the same time, cutting edge. At the helm is Alex Kemp, a third-generation optometrist who’s garnered an enviable reputation over the last ten years for his use of state-of-the-art technology, creating an advanced eye examination that’s entirely unique to the practice. Alex and his team of optometrists believe that early diagnosis is key when treating eye diseases, and their use of top-level digital technology to diligently monitor eye health is at the heart of what they do. To experience
the world’s most advanced eye exam, patients enter The Eye Lab. Here, the Optomap offers thorough screening and diagnosis of a range of potential eye problems, viewing up to 80% of the retina compared to the 20-25% seen using more conventional techniques. The process takes a fraction of a second and produces a detailed image of the back of the eye; Optical Coherence Tomography is a non-invasive imaging scan that uses light waves to take cross-section images of the retina and can detect conditions including age-related macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease and glaucoma. Then there’s the aptly named Eyegienist, a unique new service created by The Eye Place, which monitors and manages progress of anterior eye conditions, from meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) to blepharitis – or in layman’s terms, dry, irritated, allergic, or watery eyes. Once your dazzlers have been given a comprehensive MOT, the team will select
your ultimate lenses. The Eye Place work with many suppliers, and choose lenses depending on the prescription, frame type and what the spectacles will be used for. In particular, Seiko produce some of the best lenses in the world, with the most precise optics available on the market. Prescription in place, it’s onto the fun business of choosing your perfect frames, and at The Eye Place, you’ll be spoilt for choice. At the recently opened branch in fashionable Fitzrovia, you’ll find a full range of desirable specs made by premium brands – from well known names like Tom Ford and Persol, through to lesser known artisanal designers such as ROLF, a small, familyrun business based in the Tyrolean Alps. And it’s not only Fitzrovians who can boast this appealing practice as their local, with branches on Belsize Park’s Haverstock Hill, and Fleet Street, too, The Eye Place couldn’t be better placed. the-eye-place.co.uk FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

MICROBLADING WITH DAXITA VAGHELA Like good Botox, you shouldn’t notice good microblading (the delicate semi-permanent tattooing of the brows). A small blade creates natural strokes, enhancing shape and volume. A good practitioner will follow the lines your bone structure reveals. And what joy that “Lash Queen” Daxita Vaghela has turned her hand in this direction – I wouldn’t trust anyone more, and with results lasting 12-15 months, trust is vital. Daxita’s USP is precision: the “measure twice, cut once” school of thought. Before my treatment I read with horror about the pain, eyebrows that must be kept dry for a week, which would then reward you by scabbing: stuff and nonsense. Maybe Daxita is a miracle worker (it wouldn’t surprise me), but 54 |

While our salad days might be over (in more ways than one), we’ve no regrets… We’re embracing those first signs of autumn as an excuse to cosy up with some good oldfashioned comfort food. And this month there’s opportunity to expand our repertoire with a gorgeous new recipe book from The Great British Bake Off 2012 winner John Whaite. Comfort: Food to soothe the soul will be released in hardback on 5 October (Kyle Books, £19.99). John says of the book, “The food across these pages doesn’t need to be shouted from the rooftops – this food is very much already known. It lifts us when we feel blue; it’s the hug we crave from a lost love. This food has always been, and always will be, a part of who we are.” Tempted? We asked him to share a recipe to whet your appetites.

Preheat the oven to 200°C/ 180°C fan/gas mark 6. For the croûtons, place the torn baguette onto a baking sheet and toss together with the garlic oil and caraway seeds. Bake for 5–10 minutes, or until dry and crispy. For the soup, heat the olive oil and butter in a large saucepan or casserole over a high heat. When the butter melts, add the onions and cook for 10 minutes or so, until they are starting to colour around the edges. Once they are gently browned, reduce the heat to low and cook slowly for anything up to 40 minutes. The onions should caramelise deeply, and smell strong and sweet. onions. Increase the heat to high, wait a minute for the pan to get hot, then pour in the wine and let it bubble and evaporate almost entirely. Add the stock and bring to the boil, then reduce to a simmer and cook for 45 minutes, partially covered. Stir in the chutney, if using, and salt and pepper to taste. Preheat the grill. Divide the soup between serving bowls – make sure they’re heatproof – then scatter over the croûtons. Slice the Epoisses into fairly thin slices (do so quickly before it starts to melt) and lay them on top of the croûtons. Scatter over the Comté and grill until the cheese has melted and burned a little at the edges.
For the croûtons 1 x French baguette, torn into chunks 1 tbsp garlic oil (or olive oil, if you prefer) 1 tbsp caraway seeds 150g Epoisses cheese, chilled 100g Comté cheese, coarsely grated For the soup 1 tbsp olive oil 100g unsalted butter 500g pink onions, finely sliced 2 tbsp plain flour 175ml dry white wine 1 ltr beef stock 1 tbsp onion chutney (optional, but damn good) Fine sea salt and coarsely ground black pepper
It’s getting harder to ignore the shortening days – an inevitability that even the clocks going back can’t do anything to alter. It does mean that we don’t feel so guilty about turning down social invitations, though. You can’t beat snuggling on the sofa. And this year we’ll be mixing up our takeaway routine thanks to news that Sushi Shop, who already have locations in Marylebone, Notting Hill and South Ken, have just opened in Hampstead. (If you haven’t tasted this stuff yet, we urge you to – we rate it among the best we’ve eaten.) This month they’re releasing a limited edition box, designed by French interior designer Sarah Lavoine, which comes wrapped in a beautiful matching scarf. Priced at £39.90 and containing 42 pieces of their finest sushi, the box also presents three exclusive new seasonal tastes, including melt-in-the-mouth beef tartare sushi, with gherkins, capers, red onions, Americanstyle mustard, Worcestershire sauce and chives. Looks great, tastes even better. (mysushishop.co.uk)

THE WIGMORE Now, with the wind howling and the clouds darkening, feels a good time to try The Langham’s new eatery. The team got their formula right at the hotel’s Artesian, which was named World’s Best Bar a couple of years back, but they’ve gone for something completely different here, dubbing The Wigmore a modern British tavern. And with Michel Roux Jr overseeing the menu, food expectations are high. The Martin Brudnizki designed interior is a welcome sight on a wet afternoon. Inspired by classic country pubs, a deep green colour palette is accented with red and yellow leather. And a vast Deco chandelier takes centre stage above the grand timber bar. We make our way to a smaller snug area at the “The Langham has gone back, where bespoke artworks for something completely and antique furniture lend different to Artesian, a faded, lived-in look. dubbing The Wigmore With social drinking in a modern British tavern. mind, the bar menu features And with Michel Roux Jr wines on tap, cask ales and overseeing the menu, craft beers – including Saison, food expectations are high” brewed exclusively for The Wigmore in partnership with Bermondsey’s Brew By Numbers, together with house hoptails. While the food menu focuses on elevated pub grub. We begin with bar snacks. With not a pork scratching or salted peanut in sight we opt for masala-spiced scotch eggs and buttered crumpets with cock crab. The former – quails’ eggs wrapped in vermicelli crumb – are irresistibly runny, and come served on the most delicately spiced dhal we’ve ever tasted (though the waitress can’t, or won’t share the recipe). The delicious Indian flavours continue with a spiced cauliflower kedgeree, served with puri and tomato relish, but the chicken and leek pie with house mustard is the star of the show, with crisp, golden pastry Paul Hollywood would be proud of. We round the meal off with a plate of English cheeses, prolonging the moment we have to leave the warmth of The Wigmore. LSJ 15 Langham Place, Regent Street, W1B (020 7965 0198; the-wigmore.co.uk)

THE GINSTITUTE I’m new to the gin party, having been a die-hard vodka fan for much of my adult life. Feeling the need to make up for my late start, I pay a visit to The Ginstitute on Portobello Road. Several hours (and gin-based drinks) later I stagger home clutching two bottles of gin, one, their famous Portobello Road Gin, the other made by me. We begin, Tom Collins in hand, with a gin history lesson, swiftly followed by a tasting session in The Still Room (housing the copper pot still affectionately known as King Henry). There we learn about the botanicals that go into making each gin taste so different. Then it’s time to implement our new-found knowledge: by layering different waves of flavour, we each set about creating our very own blends. Mine, containing wormwood, lime, pomelo, cassia and pink pepper, has (according to our ‘gin instructor’) an even and balanced finish. I like it a lot, so I’m thrilled to hear that once it’s finished I can go online (where every Ginstitutee’s recipe is stored) and the team will mix up another bottle for me to buy. I’m not ashamed to say it’s already on order! BP £120 per person for a 3-hour experience. The Distillery, 186 Portobello Road, W11 (020 3034 2234; theginstitute.com) FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

GOLDEN OPPORTUNITY While we’re now done with bank holidays until Christmas – sniff – the good folk of China get a full three days of paid leave at the beginning of October, to honour the founding of their People’s Republic. Celebrated between 1-7 October, the public holiday is known as Golden Week. And while we can’t share in the joy of paid time off work, we can get in on the festivities, thanks to a special collaboration between executive chef of Hakkasan, Tong Chee Hwee and David Muñoz, the owner and executive chef of StreetXO (who started his London career at Hakkasan). The pair have designed a limited edition menu featuring new dishes that combine Tong’s incomparable style with Muñoz’s inimitable approach to fine dining. The high octane dishes take inspiration from cuisines around the world. We’ve been told to expect the unexpected, with Muñoz working alongside Hakkasan’s award-winning bar team and pastry chefs to bring his reputation as the “enfant terrible of Spanish gastronomy” to bear for a one-off dining experience. Think hot and sour soup with foie gras, and Spanish tortilla dim sum with truffle and quail egg. Too good to miss. The menu, which must be pre-booked, costs £88 per person. Available in Hakkasan Hanway Place and Hakkasan Mayfair until 22 October, with all dishes available a la carte (hakkasan.com)

My fail-safe dinner party menu is… nothing. I don’t tend to host dinner parties. I spend so long in the kitchen that whenever I get some time off I tend to let someone else do the cooking for me, whether that’s going out for a meal or putting my feet up at home with takeaway pizza. My last meal on earth would be… lobster tart, followed by a huge plate of BBQ king crab legs and apple tarte tatin to finish. When I feel down, I cook… my go-to comfort food – cheesy beans on toast, with sausages from a tin. This surprises most people, but sometimes the simplest things are the most delicious! My favourite London restaurant is… a new-comer. Up until recently it hadn’t changed for years, but now I would have to say Core by Clare Smyth. I was completely blown away by her food; the whole meal was outstanding. It is handsdown the best restaurant in London at the moment.
GOING NATIVE The “R” in the month will mean one thing to connoisseurs: it’s native oyster season. And there are few better places to enjoy the delicacy than at Wiltons in St. James’s. My ultimate London day consists of… heading straight to Holborn Dining Room. I’d spend a good few hours there eating great food, washed down by a few cocktails at whatever bar takes my fancy. NEW BEGINNINGS IN NW9 Providing much-needed homes for north west London’s first-time buyers, young professionals and families alike, Colindale Gardens is an exciting £1 billion development set to breathe new life into the area
The development, which spans an impressive 49 acres, will transform the disused 1960s tower blocks and surrounding land once known as the Peel Centre – the former Metropolitan
Police training college – into a vast and vibrant new community with village-like appeal. Once complete, the mixed-use project will provide a collection of 2,900 properties, ranging from studios up to fourbed family homes, as well as over nine acres of landscaped gardens, a shopping plaza, and a brand new primary school. Colindale has been designated a Housing Growth Zone by the Mayor of London, and this ambitious new development is set to complement the existing £4 billion investment in the regeneration of Brent Cross and Cricklewood. Just launched, the Orchard Quarter is the last collection to boast views over the development’s four-acre central park. On offer is a full range of luxury living spaces comprising studios, one-, two-, and three-bed apartments, plus two-, three-, and four-bed duplexes. High-
spec features include engineered wood flooring, Siemens kitchen appliances, and feature lighting in bathrooms and kitchens. What’s more, all inhabitants will have access to a residents-only gym, and with a comprehensive 24-hour concierge service at hand, peace of mind can be found with round-theclock security. The philosophy set out by developers Redrow is to create a thriving new community designed for freedom and convenience, offering something for every demographic, at every stage of life. Providing the perfect balance of parkland and local amenities, 100,000 sq ft of retail and commercial space is proposed, too, allowing residents and locals to shop, eat, work and relax here. With community as its central focus, Colindale Gardens will offer a variety of tenures that are not only affordable for first-time buyers keen to get on the property ladder, but also for those not yet in a position
to purchase, but who want to live in a flourishing community with easy access into central London. Indeed, the development boasts unrivalled transport links, with direct 24-hour access at weekends to King’s Cross, Tottenham Court Road, Charing Cross and Waterloo, via the Northern line from Colindale station – conveniently located adjacent to the development. Redrow is also investing an impressive £11 million into transport around the new homes, which will include enhancements
to the station and local bus routes. Travel FOOD FIRST It goes without saying that we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out (three of the 50 best restaurants in the world right here in the Capital, and some 77 Michelin stars for our favourite eateries), but sometimes it’s worth travelling further afield for a good feed. This month we’ll be heading to the wilds of Cumbria, following in the footsteps of husband and wife chef duo Jake and Cassie White (former head chef and pastry chef at Marcus Wareing’s two-starred Marcus at The Berkeley). They’re heading up the kitchen at the new Pentonbridge Inn, located in the hamlet of Penton, 17 miles north of Carlisle. The dining room offers two tasting menus, with dishes served personally by the chefs, created using fruit, vegetables and herbs grown by the couple in one and a half acres of Victorian walled garden and greenhouses at nearby Netherby Hall. And after dinner, guests need only stagger up the stairs to bed in one of the pub’s luxury rooms. We think it’s the perfect autumn escape. (01228 792732; pentonbridgeinn.co.uk)

The best of Barcelona Barcelona is still very much open for business, say Carmen Cardin and Alex Moreno from the concierge team at Hotel Arts Barcelona. Here are their tips for enjoying a city break this autumn Watch the sun set at Mirador del Migdia. Ironically known as “the secret of Barcelona”, this lookout spot on Montjuïc Hill is a gorgeous little hideaway with spectacular views of the evening sky. And the tables and lanterns make it a perfect place to eat and drink long after the sun has set. (lacaseta.org) Take to the sea and enjoy an afternoon sail on a catamaran. It’s a great way to see Barcelona from a different vantage point, and with live jazz and a cocktail in hand, a very relaxing one, too. (barcelona-orsom.com) Jazz it up at La Pedrera. Get yourself along to one of a series of special evenings where patrons can enjoy soulful jazz, live on the Gaudí rooftop. And if that weren’t enough, admission includes entry to the grand Gaudí space, which celebrates the work of the esteemed artist. Enjoy the cultural creativity of Barcelona’s famous heritage with a visit to one or more of Gaudí’s uniquely designed houses that are dotted across the centre of the city, such as Casa Vicens or La Pedrera. Barcelona is all about the fresh seafood, visit La Paradeta de Sant Antoni, where diners are invited to select their seafood before it is prepared, and enjoy it with a local bottle of wine. Get up high for some of the best views of the city and take a trip on Barcelona’s cable car between the marina and Parc Montjuïc. (hotelartsbarcelona.com)

Peak perfection With its spectacular ski slopes and attractive Swiss tax regime, Gstaad has become a magnet for the A-list. We took a whistle-stop tour of the winter wonderland WOR DS P E N N Y C L E ME NTS
Julie Andrews is said to have proclaimed Gstaad “the last paradise in a crazy world.” And I’d have to agree that Alpine villages don’t come more charming than Gstaad: think 18th-century chalets surrounded by rolling farmlands, all nestled in a valley at the heart of the breathtakingly beautiful Bernese Oberland. Of course, when your clientele includes the likes of George Clooney and Madonna, it goes without saying that for all its homespun charm, this particular village has glitz by the bucket load, too. There’s even a grocer selling truffle pasta and Champagne for over £6,000 a bottle, and, unsurprisingly, a host of upscale luxury hotels to boot; more than enough to tempt me to a whistle-stop winter break. While the global elite probably choose to charter a helicopter to jettison them into the heart of the action, I decide to take a train to Gstaad, where I am collected by Antonio. He escorts me to my first port of call, the five star Le Grand Bellevue Hotel, in a gleaming 1962 Bentley S3. Not just any Bentley, Antonio 64 |

tells me: this beauty is a hand-me-down from the late James Bond star Roger Moore, who used to have a home here. It is all part of the service at Le Grand Bellevue. Husband and wife team Daniel and Davia Koetser have successfully combined their British-Swiss flair to create a brilliantly eccentric Soho Housestyled retreat. I discover reassuringly soft sofas, bespoke furniture and an abundance of artistic touches that make me feel completely at home (even the bonkers life-size tweed camel in the lobby). And, come the morning, I am equally enamoured with the fully-equipped ski room, complete with underground garage so that guests can be directly chauffeured to the slopes. But I’m giving skiing a miss today to try out fat biking, a phenomenon that’s been taking the winter sports scene by storm. The fat tyres on these mountain bikes make easier

work of the snow, though it is still very much a test of my fitness levels. But at 1,800m above sea level, as the panoramic views of the valley open up before me, I soon forget the pain of the ascent. Back at the hotel, with aching muscles, I make my weary way to the vast subterranean spa – a labyrinth of interconnecting aromatic saunas, salt rooms and ice caves. The perfect restorative before dinner at the hotel’s Michelin-starred Leonard’s restaurant, which I follow up with drinks in the atmospheric bar (boasting Switzerland’s longest Chesterfield sofa) and a boogie at the nightclub, complete with world renowned live pianist. All of which puts me in mind for a slightly more laid back schedule on day two. The cable car ascent to Glacier 3000 fits the bill, and, at the top, feeling brave (or foolhardy) I sample the views from The Peak Walk. This 351 feetlong walkway is 9,800 feet above sea level, and is the world’s first suspension bridge connecting two mountain peaks. It is quite something. As is the fondue I tuck into that evening at Michel’s Stallbeizli – well worth the scenic hour’s trek in a horse and carriage.
It seems unlikely that I can better the Bellevue, but after a few nights here I am ready to move on. And a little outside Gstaad, perched high up in the small town of Schonreid, I discover the Ermitage Wellness & Spa Hotel. Perfectly placed for both the Saanenmoser Hornberg and Schonried Horneggli ski resorts, the hotel is a pleasing blend of old and new, and feels typically Swiss. Making the most of its dramatic setting, it boasts not only floor-to-ceiling windows, but also a large panoramic terrace with a heated open-air salt water pool – and a cold water one for those who are braver than me. I think I’m in heaven, not least because my spacious room is kitted out with a whirlpool tub and steam shower. There’s surely no better place to relax after making the most of the host of winter activities on offer in and around Gstaad. Not content with simply skiing, during my short stay, I’ve managed to tick a snowmobile ride, tobogganing, dog sledding, hiking and snowshoeing off my bucket list. And on my last evening, raising a toast in the hotel’s One Million Stars bar (fashioned from one million sparkling Swarovski stones, dahling) I can’t help reflecting that those A-listers are definitely on to something. small city, Dublin has a huge heart, and an unbeatable reputation when it comes to culture and hospitality. And though it’s not famed for its climate, it’s said that winter-time in the Irish capital can be charmingly atmospheric. Fancying a weekend of history and hedonism, my companion and I head for a short break in the beating heart of the Emerald Isle. Inhabiting a row of Georgian townhouses across the road from Ireland’s Government Buildings is the 5* Merrion Hotel. Close to St. Stephen’s Green and Trinity College, and just a short walk from Grafton Street and Temple Bar, with almost the whole city easily accessible by foot, it seems the perfect base from which to explore. there.” Once checked in, we enjoy imagining him and Michelle kicking back on the sofa in our Junior Suite. Graciously proportioned (read: vast) and beautifully appointed, the suite is certainly grand enough to host visiting dignitaries. Wanting to throw off the stresses of the working week, we head first to the Romanesque Tethra Spa, where we enjoy a beautifully relaxing swim and a session in the steam room. The hotel is home to Ireland’s only two-Michelin starred eatery, Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud, but we are after a slightly more informal dinner vibe (read: forgot to book in advance), so head instead to the hotel’s Cellar Restaurant. We are not disappointed; the service is exquisite (as to be expected in a hotel of this quality) and the food is divine. Special mention goes the melt-inthe-mouth lamb pithivier and the biggest rib-eye steak known to man (or certainly my man). We are replete. Next morning we re-discover our appetites just in time to enjoy The Merrion’s full Irish breakfast, then head out for a spot of history. A short bus hop finds us at Glasnevin Cemetery, opened in 1832. Rather a depressing mini-break activity? Au contraire: the sun is shining and we enjoy a 90-minute tour of the Gothic gravestones and memorials, giving us a fascinating insight into Irish history and some of the political characters who left their mark on the city. Of course, no trip to Dublin is complete without some stout, so we round off the trip with a pint of Guinness in John Kavanagh (known as “The Gravediggers pub”), next door to the cemetery. Parts of the pub date from the 18th century, and the landlord regales us with stories of wakes so “emotional” that coffins were accidentally left outside the pub for days! Later, after exploring the city’s famous bar scene – with over 1,000 pubs in Dublin we’re spoilt for choice – and meeting more fabulously friendly locals, we’re feeling quite emotional ourselves. Back at the hotel we fall gratefully into bed, enjoying the luxury of 400-thread-count Egyptian cotton bed linen. Bliss. 3. A R TE R I O R S This US luxury brand has just launched in the UK and brings with it an exquisite lighting range, showcasing some eye-opening original design. The Goulding chandelier was conceived from images of nature – think petals gently opening to the sun to create an up-lighting effect – yet its hefty form pays a debt to the industrial trend. The curved plates of the 12-light chandelier are made from beautifully aged brass and, inside, a contrasting bright gold hue gives the light a glorious dynamic. Having made their Maison & Objet debut in 2014, it’s little wonder the company has since won over some of Europe’s most discerning design lovers. £7,359 (arteriorshome.com) 4 . O CC H I O Created by Axel Meise for Occhio, the brand new Mito series aims to redefine the future of lighting – not only with shrewd design, but by using sophisticated technology. Adjusting what Meise calls the “colour temperature”, this striking ring pendant is able to switch moods through the use of futuristic touchless controls, from warm tones to cooler, energising effects. And thanks to innovative sensors, the fading function allows you to play with up- and down-lighting to your heart’s content, bringing a bespoke element to at-home ambience. But of course, where would we be without aesthetics? Luckily, Mito more than meets our standards on the design front, too. We give it a resounding “I do”. From €495.80, Occhio dealers include All Square Lighting, 104 Talbot Road, W11 (020 7727 0606; allsquarelighting.co.uk; occhio.de)

As the autumn nights draw in, our focus turns to illuminating our indoor spaces in the most creative ways, giving us the ability to play with moods, cast shadows, zone spaces, and produce high-octane drama at the flick of a switch. And because great lighting design has the power to transform a room like nothing else, this month we celebrate lighting luminaries whose boundary-pushing work is nothing short of electric

Right: a cool stone and marble bathroom adds minimalist chic
Tell us about living in Marylebone. Who doesn’t love Marylebone? I can’t think of a better place to live. Regent’s Park is on my doorstep and it’s a short walk to the West End, not to mention all the shops and restaurants close by. Even pushing a trolley around Waitrose is fun as it’s the perfect place for people watching – and oh, what people! What was the appeal of a mid-century property as opposed to a new-build? I went for location and with my budget I had to compromise. But buying into the ugliest property on the road means I don’t have to look at it! And owning the cheapest flat means that I’m rubbing shoulders with more affluent owners who also believe it’s a location worth buying in. What can go wrong? Of course, in my dreams I’d love a glorious mansion block apartment with double doors leading from one large room to another. Period townhouse? Forget it. Too much running up and down stairs. A new-build is like buying a new car; it’s not for me. I prefer to add some polish to an old one. What are your non-negotiables when buying a property? Aspect. I need a room with a view. Top floor is best – and with the bedroom facing east, for glorious morning sunshine and the living room facing west, for sunsets. I know, I don’t ask for much! Did you do much structurally when you moved in? Gosh, yes, I’m an interior designer. I don’t do things by halves! Every wall, floor and ceiling was removed and I started again. It was relatively easy to do as the building’s concrete, so I had a great opportunity to get the spatial planning right. And with prices here over fifteen thousand pounds per square metre, every square millimetre counts. How can a property’s architecture influence interiors choices? I’m with the Italian school of thought on this one: renovate what’s original, give it respect and don’t mess around with it. But then have fun with furnishing. Go as edgy and modern as you like.
Below: the sleek kitchen with sliding doors that open up Daniel’s living space
Tell us about designing for smaller spaces. My flat is a classic example of small-scale living. I followed a few Japanese principles, such as making rooms multipurpose. I have a dressing room that also works as a reading room. And I used large sliding doors that can open up or close down spaces as required. I like to open up the kitchen when I’m cooking as it’s more sociable, but there are times when we want to be cosy at home, watching a box set, so that’s when the sliding doors are closed. I value everything in the flat as being both useful and a joy to behold, even the vacuum cleaner. Where do you source your furniture? I’ve spent more than thirty years researching, from visiting antique fairs to the shows in Paris, Milan and London. I know what’s out there, which means I can make fast decisions when I have to. I go for a complete mix – the high street can be great, especially when mixed with some posh pieces; and a trawl through eBay works wonders! I like the idea that a successful home reflects personality and lifestyle whilst looking effortless. I hope I’ve achieved that. What’s your favourite piece of furniture in the apartment? She’s called Sophia Loren – a rather voluptuous 19th-century Venetian commode that sits centre stage in the bedroom. She’s a delight to look at and I’ll never leave her. How do you work with clients to realise their dream home? We all sit around a big table in my studio library. On the table is a large plan of the client’s future home and we all have a pencil and paper. We then start talking and exchanging ideas, and we sketch like crazy. The design process is as much fun as seeing the completed project. What’s next for you at Studio Hopwood? It’s varied! From a four-floor penthouse in Canary Wharf to a grand house with mews in Regent’s Park to a new restaurant in Cambridge... There are the smaller projects, too. I’m furnishing an apartment, which my client will be living in for just eighteen months, but it still needs to feel like home despite a tight budget – and that’s the challenge. (danielhopwood.com)

SHINING LIGHT O N G R E AT D E S I G N Showcasing the very best in hand-picked objets and design classics, this north London gallery finds its muse in the shape of the moon this October Brainchild of Racheline Michaels, an interior designer with over 35 years experience, Hexagon
Classic Design is a one stop shop for some of the world’s most intriguing works – from sculpture to ceramics, fine art to photography. The north London showroom, which flanks vintage motor specialists, Hexagon Classics, boasts an ever evolving display of globally sourced pieces, including some mid-century furniture and design classics from the likes of Knoll, Magis and Carl Hansen. Racheline represents a comprehensive list of international artists and ceramicists, whose work has been hand-picked for its originality and craftsmanship. The gallery works alongside collectors, interior designers and architects alike to incorporate these works at a project’s design stage, ensuring they’re given pride of place in some of the Capital’s finest homes. And, with frequent pop-up installations
and exhibitions, there’s always new and inspiring pieces to covet. This October sees the launch of Dark Side of the Moon, a unique exhibition of ceramics, furniture and sculpture, which takes the mysteries of the waxing and waning moon as its inspiration. Ceramic artists Abigail Ozora Simpson, Albert Montserrat and James Oughtibridge express their passions in clay: Simpson’s sculpture comes to life as dark and
mysterious vessels; Montserrat’s large moon jars are voluptuously curved and intricately glazed, giving textural beauty to the series; while James Oughtibridge creates large-scale ceramic sculptures with fluid curves and deep recesses. Alongside these ceramic pieces – and continuing the elemental theme – will be works by renowned sculptors Andrea Geile and Dominic Welch. Geile’s work is both from and within nature as she uses corten steel for her sculptural pieces. Welch, meanwhile, uses stone, and presents large sensuous works, curved and tactile, reflecting the contours of the moon. To give the showroom a truly celestial ambience, illuminations will come courtesy of Italian lighting designers Catellani and Smith, whose cutting edge designs will cast moon-like light and shade over the exhibition. Visitors can also expect a Scandinavian furniture pop-up
sale featuring a selection of chairs by Carl Hansen & Son. The classic Danish brand are giving visitors the chance to win one of their iconic Wishbone chairs for the best Instagram photo posted from the exhibition. And keep an eye out for the most beautiful shelving systems from String, plus furniture from Sweden’s Källemo, too. With a keen eye, and an absolute belief in the power and beauty of great design, Racheline and the team at Hexagon Classic Design pride themselves on capturing the zeitgeist, representing truly original works of today that will become the classics of tomorrow. Dark Side of the Moon opens on 13 October and runs until 30 January 2018. Make sure you pop in for home inspiration that’s truly out of this world. 82-92 Great North Road, N2 (020 8348 5151; hexagonclassicdesign.com)

BAYSWATER Though once the ugly duckling of central west London, and infamous for its cheap hotels and tatty tourist shops, times are changing for Bayswater. The area has been smartened up by developers and investors, who fell for its obvious charms – think garden squares, Italianate terraces, and a to-die-for location that is a short stroll from central London, with Hyde Park on the doorstep – and prices now compete with neighbouring Notting Hill. Luxury conversion flats dominate the market but there are pretty mews houses to be found and large family houses around Connaught Square. Meanwhile flats on the post-war Hallfield Estate, designed by Berthold Lubetkin, are in demand from lovers of the mid-century aesthetic. Perfectly placed for life in London, lucky residents also find themselves a short hop from Paddington and its link to Heathrow – making the world their oyster PHOTO G R A P H Y KAT HY ANNE LIM
Putting on a front In the 1860s, when the world’s first underground railway, the Metropolitan Railway, was built, the route between Paddington and Bayswater necessitated the demolition of two houses on one of Bayswater’s grandest residential terraces. The decision was made to build a facade to match the houses on either side. Since then, 23 and 24 Leinster Gardens have been the target of
practical jokers ordering takeaway and booking taxis, but probably the most famous prank of all occurred in the 1930s, when a small fortune was made selling 10 guinea tickets for a charity ball. Guests only realised they had been ripped off when they knocked on the fake front doors and it became apparent that they were all dressed up with nowhere to go

LOCAL HEROES BAYSWATER ARTISAN DU CHOCOLAT, W2 Salted caramels, rosé and strawberry truffles, and emerald pistachio pearls are just some of the delectable treats on offer at this boutique Bayswater chocolate shop, which is the brainchild of proud artisan and master chocolatier Gerard Coleman. Keith Rigby from Bective Leslie Marsh says, “It’s a fantastic place to go for birthday and Christmas presents,” and he’s not wrong. You’ll find beautifully boxed confectionery for every occasion here. Look out for special tutored tasting events, as well as the monthly delivery service, cheekily named Cocoa Rehab. 81 Westbourne Grove, W2 (0845 270 6696; artisanduchocolat.com) LA MEENA CAFE, W2 Tim Perks from Knight Frank recommends this deli-style eatery as his local hero, “due in part to its friendly staff, who provide excellent service at any time of day.” He continues, “The cafe offers a range of hot and cold drinks, freshly made snacks, breakfasts, sandwiches and hot meals. Aram and his team are so helpful they’ve even offered to bring our sandwiches to the office on the odd occasion, to save us the wait on a busy day. It’s also the perfect venue for a catch-up with a client over a cup of coffee.” 9 Craven Terrace, W2 (020 7706 4422) DISTINCTIVE SHOE REPAIRS, W2 Aidan Coates from Hamptons International covers a lot of ground attending viewings in and around the streets of Bayswater, so it’s little wonder he’s come to rely on this local cobbler to save his soles. He tells us, “It’s very traditional. There’s just one chap, Grant Haggerty, who runs it and he’s very helpful and accommodating. I like the fact that, in an age of disposable goods, you can prolong the life of existing footwear. (But he can also sell you a new pair of shoes if yours are really past it!)” 3 Norfolk Place, W2 (020 7460 6610)

“Our day starts at TAB x TAB with coffee and a chat with the team. We’ve not been open long, but already feel very much part of the community. There’s a real mix of long-time residents as well as a great international flavour, which makes the area very unique. After enjoying a coffee or two, we love exploring the range of cuisines on offer locally. A favourite is Alounak, on Westbourne Grove. The Persian chicken kebabs and koobideh skewer’s are perfectly grilled. For great dim sum, we’d head to Royal China. We lived in Hong Kong for many
years and Charmaine speaks Cantonese, which comes in handy when we ask for a table. There’s something very familiar about being there, and Poppy, our four-year old loves the ha gao. On family days we take Poppy to the Diana Memorial Play Ground, where she gets to play around and suffers the odd knock and tumble. We’re so lucky that there’s so much green space around – we’re spoilt for choice with Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park just around the corner. 14-16 Westbourne Grove (020 7792 3445; tabxtab.com)

Getting the most out of parents’ evening
Claudia has 5 more tips for a textbook parents’ evening: 1. Do your homework. Look through your child’s work and note any questions you have about their grades or the teachers’ comments. Ask your child how they think they’re doing, too, and add their questions or concerns to your list. 2. Turn up early. There may be some work on display for you to look at – plus one or two late
THE SHORTLIST parents could knock everyone else off schedule. 3. Make notes while you’re there. Otherwise you may forget some of the things you’ve discussed. You may also want to write down any follow-up activity or appointments you’ve agreed with the teacher. 4. Don’t be defensive. You might be told that there are areas for improvement. As hard as it might seem, try to take this feedback positively. The teacher just wants to help your child improve and ultimately get the most from their education. 5. Tell your child how it went (assuming they’re not old enough to go with you). Make sure you pass on any positive comments. And let them know that you discussed the tricky areas you’d identified together beforehand. They’ll learn that if they express something, you’ll listen and act.

THE HEAD
VICTORIA HAMPTON CONNAUGHT HOUSE SCHOOL How would you sum up the school in a sentence? It’s a nurturing school that offers a personalised education in a warm, family-like environment. How long have you been head? I’ve just taken on the role of principal, having worked in the school for ten years, first as head of early years and then
in the role of assistant principal. Connaught House was actually founded by my husband’s grandmother, then run by my motherin-law for 30 years. I feel honoured to have been trusted with the school upon her retirement. What makes the school different? Our size, primarily (we have 70 pupils), which
cultivates relationships and friendships. My two eldest children are at the school, and I wouldn’t be comfortable sending them here if I didn’t believe we could provide the very best grounding for them. How do you balance extracurricular activities with education? We juggle the timetable very
carefully! Alongside the academic, we offer music, drama, poetry, dance, mindfulness and clubs such as garage band, Lego, philosophy, chemistry and football. School finishes later on Mondays and Wednesdays and there are clubs every day. Connaught House School, Connaught Square, W2 (020 7262 8830; www. connaughthouse school.co.uk) FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

High expectations, a blur of back-to-back meetings and a creeping sense of not having got what you came for: parents’ evenings can be a lot like speed dating. And as with dating, you’ll have more success if you adopt the right attitude and approach. “Parents’ evenings are a rare chance to meet your child’s teacher and get as much detail as you can on how your child is progressing, both academically and socially,” says Claudia Dudman, editor of Independent School Parent magazine. “But with only a ten-minute slot with each teacher, you don’t want to waste time on small talk. Nor do you want to bring up wider issues about how the school is running. Have an agenda or list of questions and stick to it.”

Property news MI CASA ES TU CASA ASK THE AGENT
If, like many of us, you’ve spent years paying off a hefty mortgage on your London abode, isn’t it about time your property gave a little back? Airbnb was undoubtedly a game-changer in short-term hospitality when it launched in 2008, and since then we’ve seen the luxury market getting in on the act, too, opening the doors of some of the city’s finest dwellings to guests looking for that real-home – but high-end – experience. Veeve, founded in 2011, is one such site that offers beautiful real homes to rent across our favourite Fabric areas, including Hampstead, Notting Hill, Kensington and Mayfair. And with homeowners-turned-hosts earning an average of £1,000 per week, it’s little wonder more and more Londoners are discovering this easy way to unlock some extra income while they’re out of town. There’s definitely more than meets the eye here. (veeve.com)

“It can be a fantastic opportunity to create a home to your own requirements – you can customise it and include the exact features you want. The right renovations can certainly add value and the cost of redevelopment can be much cheaper than buying a similar property in perfect shape. But many buyers underestimate the costs and the time necessary for renovations to be completed. Undertaking work may involve applying for planning permission or getting landlord’s approval. This can be a timely and costly exercise involving negotiation and communication with several parties. It’s advisable to employ a project manager who can oversee the work, suppliers and contractors.”

A rare opportunity to redevelop this unique Victorian property
CGI Image – Proposed Games/Family Room
CGI Image – Proposed Kitchen/Breakfast/Family Area
CGI Image – Proposed Master Bedroom
In the ownership of the same family for over 60 years, this charming four/five bedroom Victorian house now comes to the market for the first time in two generations. Whereas it is in need of modernisation, the house offers a rare opportunity to redevelop this unique property, in line with the planning consent granted to extend and remodel the existing 2,377 sq ft, to create a substantial three storey detached family home of some 7,779 sq ft, which blends period charm with contemporary flair. The house is offered with a particularly beautiful, mature and well stocked 138' south facing lawn garden which has been lovingly maintained by the owners, as well as secure, gated off street parking for two/three cars.
