FROM THE EDITOR I had a fright sitting down to plan this issue and realising that Halloween and all things autumnal were on the horizon. Where has this year gone? For cover star Birdy, it passed in a state of rural idyll in the New Forest, where she sat out the various lockdowns with her family. She’s pleased to be back in London now, though, enjoying putting her stamp on her Notting Hill flat and looking forward to her first live show in quite some time. She’ll be performing music from her new album, Young Heart, at the O2 Forum, Kentish Town next month, and I, for one, can’t wait. What a joy it is to be able to see live performances again; if you’re yet to rediscover the pleasure, check out our Culture pages for more great events in and around the Capital. And if, like Birdy, you’re looking to put your stamp on your property, there’s ideas aplenty in this issue, with a focus this month on en suites and a look at some of the fantastic work being showcased at London Craft Week. Inspiring stuff.

EXHIBITION

The Natural Eye: Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition 14-24 October, Mall Galleries

For many of us, the recent lockdowns brought about a newfound appreciation of the varied wildlife found in local parks and gardens. Indeed, birdwatching has seen a ten-fold increase during the pandemic. This wholesome group show reflects our love of nature and features both common and lesser-seen creatures in a series of paintings, prints and sculpture. There’s a strong sub-text to the exhibition, too, drawing our attention to species in crisis. Julia Manning’s series of prints mourns the decline of eels. “The European eel is classed as ‘critically endangered’ by the L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

International Union for Conservation of Nature, she explains.” Meanwhile Nick Mackman’s bronze pangolin sculpture celebrates the beauty of the most trafficked animal in the world. “Capturing the intricacy of its scales was truly a labour of love,” he says, “each one having to be painstakingly modelled. Pangolins have a rich brown patina which means they are perfectly suited to bronze: emphasising their shape, form and texture.” The Mall, SW1 (020 7930 6844; mallgalleries.org.uk)

CULTURE THEATRE

The Shark is Broken 9 October-15 January, Ambassadors Theatre

Photography by Nick Driftwood

The breakout hit of 2019’s Edinburgh Fringe is finally coming to the West End to make waves – and a guaranteed host of new devotees. The Shark is Broken takes audiences back to 1974 and the filming of aquatic thrill-fest, Jaws. Keeping it in the family, the play was co-written by Ian Shaw, the son of actor Robert Shaw, who portrayed shark obsessed fisherman Quint in the film. Ian also stars as his father, alongside Liam Murray Scott as Richard Dreyfuss and Demetri Goritsas as Roy Scheider. Shooting has halted and the film’s lead actors, awash with alcohol and ambition, are stuck on a boat at the mercy of foul weather and a temperamental mechanical co-star. Funny and poignant in equal measure, this ingenious behind-the-scenes comedy is a must for film buffs and theatre lovers alike. West Street, WC2H (0333 009 6690; theambassadorstheatre.co.uk)

ive years after the release of her third album, Beautiful Lies, singer-songwriter Birdy released her latest, Young Heart, at the end of April this year. Written from her own experience, the record, which is at once raw and beautiful, tells the story of a first major relationship breakdown, exploring the fallout from this: the loneliness and the heartbreak. Next month will see her first live performance of this work, at the O2 Forum Kentish Town. “It has been so overwhelming,” she tells me. Fittingly, for these times, we are talking over Zoom; Birdy is on holiday in Cornwall. “It really has been an amazing response. A lot of this album is much more personal; I was much braver than I have been before. I think that is why I probably feel more connected to it than previous albums. It was also much harder to write, for that reason, which is why it took so long.” At just 25, it seems incredible that Birdy has recorded four albums, let alone had the time for such a long career break, but she has been making music since she was tiny. “My mum is a concert pianist, so she taught me the piano, and then, when I was about seven, I started writing these little classical piano pieces,” she recalls. “And then, one day, I just decided to start singing over it. And I think my parents were listening at the bottom of the stairs, thinking: what’s wrong with her? Because they were really melancholy songs,” she laughs at the memory. That she had talent was obvious. Aged 12, Birdy won the under 18’s category of a talent competition, going on to post a video on YouTube to thank those who had voted for her. It was spotted by a record label, and the rest is history. “They got in contact,” she explains, “then I spent two years writing songs and I signed a publishing deal. And when I was 14, I did this cover of Skinny Love, and that’s when things took off,” she explains. That song, a Bon Iver cover, made it on to the Radio 1 playlist. A year later Birdy received a Grammy nomination along with Mumford & Sons for their song Learn Me Right, which was included on the soundtrack to the Pixar film Brave. In the same year she was asked to perform at the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in London. “It is one of my most favourite things I have ever got to do,” she reveals. “It was just so moving – a very special moment for me.” Looking back on that time is surreal, she says. “I don’t think I took it in at the time; it was quite hard to understand what was happening,” she admits. “It is only now, looking back, that I realise how overwhelming it was. We were travelling everywhere and doing shows.” All this at the same time as attending school, like any normal teenager. I wonder how this worked. “I can’t really remember,” she laughs. “It was probably in the summer holidays. It must’ve been, because I never took too much time off school. It was really hard for me to explain to my friends where I had been and what I had been doing. If you haven’t been there yourself, it is impossible to explain.”

“Being away from home and out of your comfort zone, I think that can be quite good for writing. It really helps me”

At the tail-end of the whirlwind, settling down to begin work on something new was hard. “I think I needed some time at the beginning. I just wasn’t ready to write,” she tells me. “So, I did have three months where I went to India and tried to forget about it completely. A lot of that… being there… the landscapes… being somewhere different… I found that really inspiring.” Back in the UK, the words still weren’t coming. “I wasn’t having much luck writing in London,” she says. “I felt like the music didn’t have the right feel. It wasn’t quite right.” At the time, she was listening to a lot of Joni Mitchell, and, inspired to give her music more of a West Coast, Laurel Canyon feel, she decided to spend some time in LA. “Being away from home and out of your comfort zone, I think that can be quite good for writing. It really helps me,” she explains. “I wanted to just go there and see… I met a few people and suddenly it felt right for the first time. I stayed in Topanga Canyon in this beautiful old house with lots of windows. It was just so lovely being there. I had my friend Lotta staying with me. Actually, she took the picture on the album cover while we were there, and she kind of documented that time.” The photograph shows Birdy, sitting with her guitar, covering her smile with a hand draped in a knitted, multi-coloured striped shawl. With its washed-out colours, and slightly fuzzy focus, it does have a very ’70s feel. Having found her muse on the other side of the Atlantic, Birdy also spent time in Nashville. The undisputed home of Country storytelling, she tells me that it felt like the best place to finish off this folk-influenced tale: “this album really felt like it needed proper stories. There is no pressure there; it is very authentic and feels like people just want to have a nice time making something beautiful. I just loved it there. And then I met Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian – we wrote together first, and then they produced the record.” Birdy flew home from Nashville at the beginning of last year. “I got back literally as the pandemic hit,” she reveals. “We had done all of the recording, and after that it was just the mixing, and I could do that from home – over email and listening to stuff. Actually, it was nice, in a way, because I had a bit more time to focus on the artwork, and we had that year to just get it right. Maybe it would’ve come out sooner in different circumstances, but it was a good thing in the end.”

INTERVIEW

Piano-led, poetic and very personal, the sound is something of a stylistic departure for Birdy. “The last record, Beautiful Lies, was very dramatic and quite ethereal. Very different to this one,” she agrees. “Almost the opposite. This one is very raw and stripped back, and quite close and personal. I think with the last record, when I was touring, I felt like it was more of a performance. Rather than the real me. It was kind of like a character that I was playing. So, I think that is why I wanted this one to feel very different.” Mixing aside, Birdy sat out the worst of the pandemic in her family home in the New Forest. “We were very lucky,” she admits, “because we have lots of outside space, and we are by the sea, so we could swim and stuff. I was just doing lots of countryside things – I rescued a duck, which was quite a good distraction from everything that was going on,” she laughs. “There was this little duckling who was around a week old, and she was found in a neighbour’s swimming pool. We live close to lots of lakes, so I tried to find her family, but ended up raising her myself. She grew up, and disappeared back into the wild… She has since come back a year later, with her own ducklings,” she smiles. Mental images of the little duckling being fed by hand bring us nicely to an explanation of Birdy’s own name. “My real name is Jasmine,” she says, “but my parents have never called me that. I think that my mum named me, and then thought, ‘that is definitely not her name’. When my parents were feeding me when I was a baby, they said I would open my mouth really wide, like a little bird. So, they called me Birdy.” With a name like that, a career in music was almost inevitable. I wonder if the extended period away from the real world proved a good opportunity for writing, but Birdy shakes her head. “I am only just starting to think about writing again now,” she explains. “I think because it was four years writing the last album, I was quite ready to have a break for a bit. It will be interesting to see what I took from that time – you just take everything in, and then it is in your subconscious. For me, anyway. So, I am sure there will be some ideas inspired by that time …” Birdy is back in London now – Westcountry holidays aside – and pleased to be in her own place in Notting Hill. “I had been back at home for such a long time, so I was ready to leave,” she laughs. “I had just moved to a new flat before the pandemic, and there was nothing really in there. So, I am slowly making it into a home now, but it is taking a while.” It is perhaps unsurprising to hear her describe her style as bohemian and a bit ’70s. “I live near to Portobello Road and there are so many amazing second-hand things on the market. I love finding cool and unique things. That’s really good fun,” she reveals. A country girl at heart, Notting Hill felt like a safe choice to Birdy: “Lots of my family are there, and so it feels familiar, like home to me,” she explains. “I remember going up to visit and being in that area seeing my cousins. So, it is just very familiar to me. It is a really beautiful place – all of those painted houses are really lovely. I need to escape every now and then, so I do go back to the New Forest from time to time, but I really like London.” It is fitting, then, that Birdy’s first live show in some years will be right here in the Capital. Something she is very excited about. “I have had some of the songs on this album for four years now, and I haven’t had the opportunity to play them for anybody, so, yes, I am really excited,” she nods. “We did a live stream in April, and it was amazing, and I loved it, but it is not the same. You don’t have the same energy that you get when there are other people there with you, listening.” Will there be nerves beforehand – especially after such a long hiatus from live shows? “I love the performing, but I do get nervous beforehand,” she agrees. “Once I am on stage, I love it. The hardest bit for me is actually the talking. With the singing I am fine; it is having to talk to the audience that I find really scary. I am shy, and I think that I just feel more confident singing, I’m not sure why that is. It is really nice to be able to connect with people between the songs though, and it does make a huge difference if you are able to do it. So, I am trying to get better at it.” Though she has toured all over the world, Birdy confesses that watching live music was never really something she did much of herself. Something that she intends to put right now that it is once again possible. “When I couldn’t, it made me realise how much more I should’ve been doing it. So, now, I would like to start going to lots more concerts and seeing people,” she tells me. “I was quite bad at it before – probably because I was always so busy. I just didn’t do it enough. I would love to go and see Wise Blood at some point. I think she would be amazing live. I mean, there are so many people I would like to see…” Sentiments I share wholeheartedly: the return of live music is most welcome, and I, for one, can’t wait to see Birdy’s comeback.

When Simone, below, was diagnosed with a form of cervical cancer it led to her suffering from alopecia. And so began her journey to becoming a hairloss expert

Simone Thomas Wellness

In the same week I noticed the bald patches a clip from Fleabag appeared on my feed: the one in which Fleabag marches her sister back into the hairdressers demanding compensation for Claire’s hilariously lopsided ‘pencil’ cut. In the altercation she announces, assuredly, “Hair is everything. We wish it wasn’t, so we could actually think about something else occasionally, but it is!” The patches were a bolt out of the blue for me. I’d made it through 2020, things were finally looking up – alopecia areata, an auto-immune disease, was not on my 2021 bingo card. I’ve always been blessed with a mane of thick hair, so much so that I’d have an annual moan on the hottest days of the year – to the annoyance of my thinner haired friends. Luckily, the two patches just above the nape of my neck, around an inch and a half in diameter, were obscured by the rest of my barnet. But the thing about alopecia is the fear. Is this just the beginning? Am I going to lose it all? Will it ever grow back? In shock and tears I turned to healthy hair guru Simone Thomas who, I’d heard, had treated a woman who’d lost it all after being hospitalised with Covid and was now sporting a lustrous full head of hair. Relieved to be in the best hands – Simone has a clinic on Harley Street and has herself suffered hair loss – I send off hair and nail samples for testing. We would have done this in person but in the throes of lockdown, everything – even the magic stuff – happened over Zoom, and yet I

couldn’t have felt more cared for. Simone works with homeopath extraordinaire Debbie Rix, who runs my samples though her machine, looking for imbalances and deficiencies, what can be improved diet-wise, and what I need to cut out. I’m warned that it can be a bit spooky, and that I may find the experience emotional, even, but I’m encouraged to trust the process. It’s incredible what can be gleaned about our health from tiny hair and nail samples, and sure enough, Debbie knows everything from my sinus troubles (I had surgery a few years back) to my dire need post-lockdown to see a chiropractor

(thanks, childbirth). Incredibly, this isn’t just a snapshot of my health today. With amazing accuracy Debbie picks up on ailments and injuries from the past that my body is hanging onto. I am spooked and seriously impressed. Complementing Debbie’s bespoke remedy and recommendations, I’m put on Simone’s Ginkgo Hair Care Plan, which includes ginkgo biloba B+ and super green supplements, as well as the Biotin Hair Care Plan, including high-dose biotin brilliance and a skin quencher packed with vitamin C and the richest marine collagen. Six weeks later I send off new hair and nail

samples and we repeat the tests to find that much has improved. Indeed, my hair looks and feels strong and lustrous, my skin is glowing and I feel healthier, happier and brighter all-round. Suffice to say, the treatment is so comprehensive, so thorough and so individually tailored that I’m certain anyone – hair loss or no – would reap the benefits. As for the patches, it’s taken a while, but I now have significant regrowth, albeit pure white baby hair. This isn’t exactly how I’d imagined getting my first greys – but I don’t care. I’m told the pigment may even return over time. Hair may not be everything but right now, I’m incredibly grateful for it, and I’ve resolved to rejoice in its full body and never moan again. AH

NEW OPENING

Showstopping teas Baker to the stars, Lily Vanilli is set to launch a decadent afternoon tea in the green marble-lined Grand Saloon at the newly renovated Theatre Royal Drury Lane this month. Lily’s menu, which will be available to non-theatre goers, too, takes inspiration from the Regency period, with sweet treats including delicate pink lemonade tarts with elderflower jelly set with tiny hand-cast, gilded chocolate cherubs. Meanwhile, the savoury offering sees the likes of a signature Lily Vanilli puff pastry sausage roll made with Cornish sausage meat, roast bacon lardons and a cider vinegar deglaze. Warm scones are served with salted whipped butter, as well as the usual cream and homemade jam. Rounding off proceedings, a trolley will roam the room serving scoops of heady absinthe mint choc chip ice cream, made to a top-secret recipe. And everything will be served on a tea service designed by British designers Kit and Willow Kemp, featuring mythical characters taken from costume design illustrations for the theatre’s ballets, comic operas, pantomimes and Edwardian musical comedies over the years. Lily says: “I love the fact that the tea is made up of classics that everyone genuinely wants to eat: jelly, ice cream, cake, custard and sausage rolls… I can’t wait to see the theatre come to life, with guests sitting in the incredible Grand Saloon to get stuck in and revel in the hedonism and decadence that the Regency period was so well known for.” As if you needed an excuse to get yourself back down to theatreland… The Grand Saloon, Theatre Royal Drury Lane, Catherine Street, WC2B (thelane.co.uk; lilyvanilli.com)

RECIPE

Bettina Campolucci Bordi’s Spiced Pumpkin Pie

SERVES 6-8

West Hampstead’s plant-based chef Bettina Campolucci Bordi found fame on social media through her blog, Bettina’s Kitchen. Five years later, she’s just released her third recipe book, Celebrate (£20, Hardie Grant). It’s full of delicious recipes that are perfect for celebrations and special occasions. Next up on the annual calendar of events, Halloween – so, what does she recommend for spooky gatherings? “I couldn’t leave the pumpkin pie out, could I?” she says. “This lovely pie includes a pinch of spice and has lots of creamy texture. It goes well with ice cream or some whipped cream! It’s a must in my humble opinion.”

INGREDIENTS For the pastry: 250g plain (all-purpose) flour | pinch of salt | pinch of sugar | 115g vegan butter, chopped into small pieces, plus extra for greasing | 60ml plant milk (I like oat milk) For the filling: 480g pumpkin purée (see Cook’s Tips) | 120g ground almonds (almond meal) | 100g brown or coconut sugar | 100ml plant milk | 60g vegan butter | 60g plain (allpurpose) flour | 2cm piece of ginger root, peeled and grated | 1 tsp ground cinnamon | 1 tsp ground cardamom | 1⁄2 tsp ground cloves | 1⁄2 tsp baking powder To serve: 280ml whippable plant cream | 1tbs maple syrup | 1 vanilla pod (bean), split and the seeds scraped out, or 1 tsp vanilla paste or extract METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas 4). Grease a cake or pie

COOK'S TIP

An easy way to cook a whole pumpkin, skin and all, is to roast it in the oven at 180°C (350°F/gas 4) for 1 hour. Once cooked, simply cut off the top, remove the seeds and use the cooked pumpkin for this and other recipes, such as risottos and salads. The pumpkin will last a week in the fridge, and you can dip into it whenever you need it!

pan (with a removable base so the pie will come out easily) with some butter. 2. Make the pastry by adding all the dry ingredients to a bowl. Use your hands to rub the chopped butter into the flour mix. Then add the milk little by little and mix well to form a dough. You can either use the pastry straightaway or, if you have time, rest it somewhere warm for 15–20 minutes. Alternatively, keep in the fridge overnight. 3. Roll the pastry dough into a disc that’s larger than the base of the cake/pie pan, with enough to go up the sides. Put the pastry in the pan and use your index fingers and thumbs to press into the base and sides so it lines the whole pan. Trim off any excess dough that comes over the edges with a knife. You can use the excess dough to create a criss cross pattern on top of the pie if you like. 4. Prick the base of the pastry with a fork and pre-cook in the oven for 10 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, add all the ingredients for the filling to a food processor or blender and blitz until well combined. 6. When the pie case is ready, remove from the oven and add the pumpkin filling. Smooth the filling flat with a palette knife, then bake in the oven for 45 minutes. 7. While the pie is baking, whip the cream with the maple syrup and vanilla. Chill in the fridge until you are ready to serve. 8. Once the pie is ready, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving with the whipped cream.

Take a punt on Cambridge

Zalán Schuster, Head Concierge, University Arms, Cambridge “With buildings that have endured the test of time for nearly a thousand years, Cambridge is remarkable. Beautiful in any season, there is so much to see here. To find your bearings, climb the 123 steps of the tower at Great St. Mary’s, which offers panoramic views of the city. Architecturally, St. John’s could be described as the most beautiful of the colleges. Amongst its alumni are the playwright Ben Jonson and the poet William Wordsworth. It is also worth having a look at The Bridge of Sighs – according to legend, undergraduates would sigh as they crossed the bridge if their exams had not gone well. Another must see is the Wren Library, which contains Sir Isaac Newton’s notes and the original Winnie-the-Pooh manuscript. Stop for a gourmet sandwich at Bread & Meat. Afterwards, pop into Jack’s Gelato for an ice cream, or Fitzbillies for one of their famous Chelsea Buns. Visiting the Botanic Garden is highly recommended: the 40-acre-garden with its 8,000+ species of plants is the perfect spot to find some head space. Round your day of sightseeing off with a drink at The Eagle, the most famous and historic pub in Cambridge. There are so many options where dinner is concerned, from excellent steaks at The Chophouse to vegan favourites at The Old Bicycle Shop. Alternatively, if you’re after fine dining, you can’t beat Midsummer House.” universityarms.com

We don’t need to tell you that travel is good for the soul, and a new staycation package from one of London’s top boutique hotels has been designed to harness that power – even when we aren’t able to truly get away. With the importance of mental and physical health at an all-time high, The Mandrake have introduced their ‘Soul Revival Package’.

Visitors are spoilt for choice when it comes to luxury accommodation here, though top of our wish list is the brand-new Mango House, by LXR Hotels & Resorts. GROWN UP GLAMOUR If the weather is to keep you prisoner, where better than five-star hotel, Le Hotel Majestic Barrière on the Croisette, Cannes

partly, in the warmth of the welcome and the Majestic is keen to make sure its guests are thoroughly at home. My friend Claudia remembers staying here as a child with her family in the 1970s. She licks her lips recalling the steak tartare some thirty-odd years later, so my expectations are high – and I am not disappointed. When in France… Fois gras is a guilty pleasure but at Fouquet’s – the Majestic’s expansive bar and Parisian-style luxury brasserie – the pleasure easily outweighs the guilt. Classic French dishes such as duck fillet and pepper beef sit alongside fish and chips and burgers. We try the squid and the pan-fried scallops on a smooth buttery artichoke puree. The Mediterranean influence is clear from the number of fish dishes on the menu. It takes us an age to choose the Hautes Côtes de Nuit Domaine Chambris Bourgogne but we are delighted with a white that can sit happily with our seafood and hold its own against the fois gras. I indulge in breakfast in my room on day one and I feel a little bit of a princess as I nibble tiny pastries and sip café au lait, but I am glad to have made it to the breakfast buffet the following morning where I chip chunks off a laptop-sized honeycomb to sweeten my pancakes and consider having a glass of Champagne to get the day started. On Saturday night we eat at La Terrasse du Gray, the gourmet restaurant at the Majestic’s sister hotel just around the corner, Le Gray D’Albion. Here the menu relies on seasonal produce and experiments with more international flavours. Risottos and ravioli remind us that we are not all that far away from Italy, but the latter comes gyoza “dumpling-style” stuffed with prawns, while the sea bream carpaccio is tangy with a mango and coriander salsa. I plump for the burrata and grilled zucchini salad to start. (It’s not been that long since lunch where I’m working my way through the chef’s daily specials at Fouquet’s.) Mains include a wok section with a tempting-sounding Peking duck glazed with honey from the restaurant’s own hives while the rest of the menu feels familiarly Mediterranean with a twist: grilled lamb chops and caponata, octopus with preserved lemon, pan-fried beef brightened up with a chimichurri condiment. Dating from 1926, the Majestic has undergone major renovations in the last two decades, evolving to incorporate the most modern ideals of luxury while keeping true to its roots. The

annes is not usually shrouded in mist nor virtually unreachable on roads turned to rivers. Ordinarily the French Riviera is irresistibly filmic, bathed in glorious sunshine, the shushing of cicadas soothingly audible above the gentle lapping of the Med… But visiting the Le Hotel Majestic Barrière during dramatic autumn storms gave me the opportunity to fully luxuriate in the old school comfort and style of a Riviera icon where film festival stars are wont to stay. My room has an undisturbed view over a slate grey sea. Palm trees wave bravely in the squall. But I can easily imagine how grateful I would be for the awning that keeps the worst of the rain off the sun loungers were the sun to require me to lounge on a balcony that is really too grand to be a mere balcony but is more of a private terrace. In a separate wing, the hotel’s most sumptuous suites all face directly onto the famous red-carpeted steps of the Palais des Festivals up which have glided stars from Sophia Loren to Angelina Jolie – in fact every imaginable A-lister since the Cannes Film Festival began in 1946. Each impressive suite is decorated in a distinct style: the fashionably chic Dior; the Riviera, whose nautical theme recalls the spirit of a luxury liner; a set of rooms celebrating cinematic style; and the classy classic, Morgan. The penthouse has its own private rooftop pool with sea view. Lesser folk make do with the hotel’s (still rather fabulous) heated seaside pool or its private beach. But as much as the Majestic revels in its very grown up glamour, the hotel is as welcoming to families and is justly proud of its special film-making club for the kids, part of the Le Studio by Petit VIP concept, which hosts family fun workshops and 5-star activities for children. The charm of a traditional hotel is, at least L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

vast entrance hall is decorated in Venetian-style sumptuousness, all gold and glittering lights. I nestle happily with my laptop in the spacious lounge and can see why the hotel is popular with business travellers and for conferences. Sparkling chandeliers, glass, mirrors, leather, and gilt all go a long way to take the edge off a Powerpoint presentation. The restoration of this part of the hotel, unveiled during the 2016 film festival, was inspired by Art Deco designer Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, at work in the 1920s and 30s. Amid the dreamy ivory and cream interior – at once grand and yet comfy – I expect Hercule Poirot to walk in at any moment. When the sun breaks through, I venture out for a turn around the harbour to admire the yachts in temporary residence. I stroll past the luxury outlets that line the street outside the hotel, Cannes’ famous Boulevard de la Croisette: Prada, Gucci, Dior. Despite the hype, the old town retains the charm of the fishing village it once was. A sudden downpour, though, and it’s not so much Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief as Mr Bean’s Holiday, but there is sanctuary in the Diane Barrière spa, where I relax on a heated bed in a lilac-lit room, massaged with scented oils. Partnering with skincare experts Biologique Recherche, the wellness centre has a range of beauty treatments fit for any aspiring starlet, while the Caribbean-infused Ligne St Barth line promotes the three Rs: relaxation, restoration, rejuvenation. As I am packing to leave, a call comes from the concierge to tell me that the roads are closing between Cannes and Nice airport. By the time I make it to the front desk, taxis are no longer picking up. Enter Joel, bellboy extraordinaire, tasked with getting me to the airport come hell or high water. At last I feel I am starring in my own movie as we dash up the motorway, wiggle along mountain lanes, edge through flooded roads and make it, finally, to the airport. If only Cary Grant had been waiting there for me…

ARTISAN HOMEWARES

Organic ceramics Ceramicist, designer and educator Reiko Kaneko recently introduced SCP shoppers to her Botanical Collection – a pigment-rich range of vases, plates and bowls with delicate depictions of the various flora found in her London garden. Born out of an exploratory chapter in her career in which Kaneko closely studied the pâte-sur-pâte technique – layering up and etching away clay – and later, the application of a new digital process, the pieces are at once bold in colour and ethereal in pattern.

Aiming for the feeling of down, the luxe bedding brand has come up with an ingenious feather alternative made from 100 per cent recycled materials – largely plastic bottles – and the result is lightweight, easily re-fluffable and perfectly cuddly bedding. But if only down will do, customers with a conscious can choose either recycled down or 100 per cent responsibly sourced European white duck down, both super light and lofty. From £40 (bedfolk.com)

KITCHENWARE

Arteriors has launched two suitably gothic chandeliers in time for Halloween celebrations. The dramatically noir Tilda playfully subverts the form of the classic crystal chandelier with its swooping arms and organic shapes. In black wood and iron, it offers a rustic charm alongside its dark drama. Rondelle, the handiwork of guest designer Laura Kirar, is a modern take on the medieval chevalier pendant design. Crafted from blackened iron, and with delicately imprinted glass work, it is designed to hang like a striking artwork, whether illuminated or not.

If you’ve been paying attention on Insta, you’ll know that the chic and monochrome Always Pan from Our Place has become a bit of a cult favourite. Due to popular demand, the brand has now released the Perfect Pot, which boasts multi-functionality as well as being every bit as stylish as its sister product. The voluminous pot comes complete with some seriously clever built-in cooking hacks and can be used for everything from braising to baking, straining to roasting. Choose from four Mediterranean-inspired earthy tones.

Where bright colours in large repeat patterns can easily overwhelm a smaller space, Bert & May’s new Terrazzo tiling collection (opening image) hits all the right notes with its ditsy free-form patterning borrowed from 18th century Venetian walkways. Beautifully hand-crafted using bespoke designs (no two squares are the same) the eye-catching tiles are made from a mix of ground materials including marble, granite and quartz. Neutral in tone but with playful colour variations, the tiles offer a rich visual texture and are anything but plain.

LIGHT AND SPACE

Lighting is all-important in an en suite, not only to brighten up a smaller space, but to create a cosy ambient glow – this is an extension of the bedroom, after all. Just launched, Lights and Lamps’ first bathroom collection marries statement wall and ceiling lights with stylish pendants designed to perfectly illuminate bathing spaces, from large family bathrooms down to diminutive en suites. The Silio pendant and flush lights are characterised by a dome-shaped shade, and in brushed brass with opal, hint at classic Art Deco design. THINK PINK

A well-known interior design trick is to go lighter with furniture pieces if you want to create the illusion of extra space – a tiny en suite shower room being a case in point. But that doesn’t mean you should always stick to white. Britton’s chic Dalston collection includes a delicate matt pink unit that sits underneath the ceramic white washbasin, creating a pretty contrast. Clean-lined and contemporary, the lacquered MDF unit offers handy storage space and hides away the plumbing. Complete the look with ballet-pink tiles. From £399 (brittonbathrooms.com) 5

A NOD TO MOD

A single design-led statement piece can work wonders in an en suite, especially if it comes in a vibrant colour pop. VitrA’s Plural range, the handiwork of Milan-based American designer Terri Pecora, comprises mid-century inspired monochrome pieces. Blurring the boundaries between bedroom and functional bathing spaces, the collection is decidedly furniture orientated, as in the ceramic washbasin with its curve-edged shelf in dark oak. In matt moss green, it marks a stylish return to the coloured sanitaryware of the 1960s, too.

STYLISH STORAGE

En suite bathrooms are often compact spaces so you’d be wise to think about nifty storage solutions when designing yours – especially if you’re after a contemporary, clean-lined and clutter-free look. Crosswater’s new Infinity furniture collection features modular units that not only offer handy cupboard space, but, being wall-hung, create the illusion of extra floor space underneath. In a range of luxe finishes including marble and oak, the customisable cabinetry seemingly floats, which cleverly counters the boxy forms.

7

WATER FEATURE

The use of reflective materials in a compact room allows the light to bounce around beautifully, creating an airiness that you just don’t get with solid matt colours. Porcelain Superstore’s Marais Aqua ceramic tiles are an ideal addition to an en suite. Varied in tone from duck egg blue through to mint and turquoise, the high gloss tiles offer a rippling water effect that gently moves with the light. Off-set the textural tiles with plain white sanitaryware for a pleasing contrast. 7

OUTSIDE IN

With clever contemporary design, an en suite doesn’t have to be separated from the bedroom at all. This stylish sleep space incorporates an elevated wet room with a luxurious walk-in shower that’s framed by Crittal-like glazing and accented by similarly stylish noir accessories and lighting. Deftly mixing form and function, the panel is crafted from toughened glass and powder-coated steel in a matt black finish, while its effortlessly simple form allows you to roll out of bed and step straight in.

This characterful property is all about the backstory – from architecture to object

A

s creative director of Shutter Hub, an organisation that supports talented snappers across the globe – and as a photographer herself – Karen knows a thing or two about good light. In fact, it’s top of her list of non-negotiables when buying a home. “I love big windows and seeing the change in light through the seasons, the height and the glow of the sunlight, especially when dappled through trees, it brings me great joy every day,” she says. Karen has lived in her current abode – a 1930s four-bedroomed house complete with a pitched gabled roof, tall chimneys, large rooms, and her requisite big bay windows – for 11 years. She shares the house with partner Adam and their 14-year-old rescue cat, Tutti Biscotti, who by all accounts appreciates the property’s abundance of sunlight as much as Karen does. The definition of a doer-upper, the house had been empty for some time before it came into their hands. Karen describes the broken windows, wallpapered ceilings, curtain pelmets, gloomy dark red walls “and an old Axminister carpet that was so worn, coming down the stairs was like skidding on ice.” But, conversely, this was all part of the plan. In fact, for Karen, it was the dream. “I prefer places that haven’t been touched for years,” she explains, “with old, coloured bathrooms, faded wallpaper and barely any kitchen. I love the idea of stories being lived out in theses spaces – and being allowed to be part of that.” She goes on to describe the couple’s first night in the house, a particularly frosty January, huddled under the duvet. “The next morning, Adam took a hammer to the heating pump and got it working. The boiler was old and leaky, so he designed a new heating system to incorporate a wood burner that can heat the water, too.” Adam works as an environmental engineering consultant, which clearly has its benefits when you have grand designs on bringing a neglected period property back to life. Karen’s interiors style is calm but at the same time, eclectic. And that’s entirely in sympathy with the architecture and original fittings. “If something looks nice and feels nice, it’s welcome,” she says. “Especially if it’s in a muted tone.” Indeed, the house is rich in interesting artworks and artefacts, but it never feels cluttered. There’s order to the eclecticism. Her keen eye for light and space sees earthy, neutral shades on the walls and the paint reflects the light beautifully. A keen collector, Karen’s homely finds come from auction houses, junk shops and charity shops – pieces she’s thoughtfully curated over the years. “I’ve been buying things since I was a child,” she

Karen’s desk, for example, is an old Georgian dining table, while the long set of shelves in the living room are crafted from three Ikea bookcases, which Adam cut down, reworked and painted. “I don’t mind where things come from,” Karen says. “I just want them to be beautiful – and ideally not brand new.” Her passion is not only collecting but creative repurposing, too. “The oak doors in our back hall came from an old office on the Immingham docks that was being demolished,” Karen explains. “In the conservatory there’s an old table from a factory with some of my Pelargonium plant collection on, I have a few old factory storage bins, and old ballot boxes, and school chairs from another building that was being torn down.” Karen’s favourite things in the house tell stories, and she could wax lyrical about their origins and how they came into her possession, it’s fascinating. Some of them come with a personal narrative, too. The vintage Sklo Union vase that she found in her grandmother’s bin, for example. “When she died, we went to clear her house, her neighbour had also died and whoever had emptied their place had put everything into the neighbour’s dustbins. It seemed so sad. The vase is beautiful, heavy clear glass with straight sides that undulate like ribbons… I imagine it was probably a wedding gift, or something significant and important to someone, but literally someone else’s rubbish. It’s worth about £80, but I’ll keep it forever.” Karen also describes the cushions needlepointed by her mum, filled with feathers and backed in thick velvet. “They are just lovely.” The chairs in the conservatory were bought by Karen’s grandmother at auction in the 1950s, and are said to have come off the Queen Mary. And the beautiful oak cupboard in the hallway that doubles as a surface for Karen’s pottery collection, was a gift from her late friend, Wendy. Between publishing Shutter Hub’s first book, launching the Auto Photo Awards, and penning and photographing travel features, Karen is one busy woman. Her calm but eclectic home is a sanctuary to return to, but beyond that, it is a home full of history and character. “I want to live in a house that inspires me and gives me space,” she says. “I love to think about how other people lived in this house before us, and that sense of memory, the clues that they were here – that kind of thing feels like magic.”

Clockwise from top: Karen’s pottery collection sits on a beautiful oak cabinet; the cushions on the Chesterfield were needlepointed by Karen’s mum; the house is rich in interesting artworks

Knights of Knightsbridge

The pupils at one central London school are encouraged to foster a genuine and deep sense of belonging and engagement with the wider world

K

nightsbridge School is a vibrant central London day school. A broad and engaging curriculum combined with an outstanding range of extra-curricular opportunities mean that children are encouraged to be creative, curious and, by having a go, to find their talents and develop the skills for success. Since its launch, the school has been recognising outstanding pupils with its prestigious Knight of Knightsbridge Award. These are presented to pupils who have achieved excellence in any aspect of school life and made a significant impact on the community. Previous recipients of the award include a fencing champion who represented his country and a pupil who performed in the West End. The most recent Knights are Osian (Y6), Kasia (Y6) and Luca (Y4). Read their stories below and get inspired to do something positive for your community!

activities, Kasia submitted it to the Durrell Project and was awarded a Durrell Bronze Conservation Award for young and aspiring conservationists. Kasia continues to find new ways to help the planet and is part of the school eco club, campaigning to take the school from its current silver eco badge to a gold badge. Luca (Year 4) Luca set himself the challenge of delivering 50 meals a month to homeless people around London. He felt passionate about the growing issue of homelessness and supporting those less fortunate. In his own time over the weekend, Luca made packed lunches and met lots of people who were very appreciative of his efforts. To arrange a tour of the school, contact the Registrar, Mary Caldecott-Smith, on 020 7590 9006. 67 Pont Street, SW1X (knightsbridgeschool.com)

Osian (Year 6) Over the course of last term Osian and his brother (KS Alumnus) Gethin collected old sports kit and football boots from friends and fellow KS pupils in order to donate it to the Harrow Club for underprivileged children, which has five branches across London. Gethin travelled to the West London branch to hand over the donations, met with Steve Davies, Senior Programmes Manager of the club, and had a tour around the facilities. Osian said: “We found out that many of the employees at the club had been buying football kit for the children from their own money because the children’s families can’t afford new kit for them.” The Harrow Club was extremely grateful for Osian and Gethin’s effort in collecting and delivering all the kit. Kasia (Year 6) Lockdown got lots of us thinking about what’s important and for one student, Kasia, it meant concentrating on bettering the environment. Inspired by the Knightsbridge School weekly eco challenges that included making an insect hotel, cooking a meal solely using local produce and planting herbs. Where children love to learn

What makes a great first school? One north London junior school is proving that knowing the children as individuals is what really sets it apart Choosing the right school for your child is an extremely important decision for every parent and finding somewhere which fits can feel overwhelming. By focusing on students as individuals, The King Alfred School in Hampstead Heath provides a place where children can come to love learning, at their own pace. “We offer an alternative educational approach to many other schools,” says Karen Thomas, Head of Lower School. “Within our structure children can excel on

their own terms and, within that, the freedom to explore and discover a love of learning.” Understanding that children develop at different rates, and that learning is not a race, is key to the success of the school. Teachers take time to find out about each child’s interests and motivations and students are involved in their learning journey; helping to choose enquiry topics, co-writing class contracts and agreed behaviours, and presenting their work to parents in student-led conferences.

“Yes, my child is learning a lot academically, but she is also learning about community, about caring for others” King Alfred School parent

Success in literacy and numeracy is important, as is the enjoyment of reading, writing, mathematical thinking and other core subjects. Of equal importance in the school’s holistic approach to children’s selfconfidence is their development as communicators, collaborators, creatives, critical thinkers, researchers and friends. The school is situated on the edge of Hampstead Heath, with classrooms all opening directly onto the central field or playground areas. With Forest School on the curriculum and a wealth of space for outside learning, students aren’t sat at desks all day, but are active and engaged in activities which deepen the learning experience. Teachers use enquiry as a basis for their lessons, creating exciting opportunities and hands-on ‘real life’ experiences for the children to participate in and explore. This approach is about more than asking a child what they want to know, it is about triggering curiosity and

opening the door to new, deeper learning. Head, Karen, sums up why their approach works: “We believe that learning should be joyful and that childhood is precious. Our wonderful team of staff work very hard to ensure the children come to us each day with big smiles on their faces, excited about the learning their day may bring.” To read about Lower School and register for an Open Event, visit kingalfred.org.uk For admissions queries, contact admissions@kingalfred.org.uk

FABRIC PROMOTION that comes with exploring these options creates the growth mindset that instils resilience and allows our young people to trust in themselves,” he continues. It is hard to know what you want to do with your educational and working career at 16 or 18-years-old. You may think you want to study Economics at university or become an accountant, but later come to the realisation that this is not what you want to do with the rest of your life. It is human to take the path that seems safest, the subject that comes most naturally or that which is encouraged… It takes courage and resilience to re-assess our options, to make career changes or pursue other areas of interest; the very skills that come with having explored a broad and inspiring curriculum or wide-ranging enrichment programme. At North Bridge House, the breadth and depth of the curriculum design allows the school to really identify and develop the individual’s strengths and interests. Whether it be the rotation of languages from the outset of students’ education in Year 7, or the open options system for GCSE, there is great scope for creative success, academic success, future physicians or budding photographers.

Facilitating success

Supporting our children in a hothouse pandemic: promoting resilience and embracing new norms Resilience and adaptability have fast become the most desirable life skills in today’s young people. Pre-Covid-19, it was admirable if our children dusted themselves off and carried on after reading a test question wrong or conceding a try on the rugby pitch, but ultimately, the more they practised the further they would navigate well-trodden ground to success. Three lockdowns and two years of cancelled exams later, it has become essential for teenagers in particular to pilot uncharted waters, adapting their route to reach the same end goal whatever the setback. “Yet we as parents can unintentionally sabotage our children’s potential to embrace this newfound resilience, especially now that we are, understandably, desperate to see them succeed in the face of adversity,” says Brendan Pavey, Executive Headteacher of North Bridge House Senior Schools. “We encourage them to work hard at the traditionally more academic disciplines, or to find that one thing they are good at, to pursue it and then to excel. However, this doesn’t leave much room for trying lots of different things – for discovering a passion for cookery, an eye for photography, a talent in costume design. Our children may even find these disciplines more challenging, but the inspiration

One lesson per week is also dedicated to the timetabled enrichment programme, which introduces students to around 20 different topic areas – ranging from ethics and astronomy to ancient cultures and costume design – aimed specifically at ‘character education’. “The enrichment programme provides a breadth of learning experience that takes pupils much further than the curriculum itself, facilitating their personal development and really growing them as people. Adaptable people with a whole host of soft skills that will benefit them in the real world, co-ed working environment, global pandemic or no global pandemic,” explains Brendan. Not all students respond well to hothouse environments and while North Bridge House is academically rigorous with high expectations, in adopting a ‘low pressure, high support’ model designed around opportunity, the school considers the whole child – teaching life lessons as well as academic lessons, soft skills as well as hard skills, and facilitating every path to success. he task of making sense of how the world around us works is a daunting one, fraught with numerous questions and challenges. But, when the curriculum engages meaningfully, the plethora of insightful questions from students can be amazing. At St. Anthony’s, boys are equipped with the tools needed to understand the basics of the biological, chemical and physical world around them, in a curriculum that gives space for wonder and awe. The arc of each boy’s Science learning journey, from reception to year 8, is something that is planned with great focus at the school. The aim of the Science faculty is for each boy to grow in confidence and enjoyment as they explore the mechanics of the visible and invisible world. A richly broad body of scientific knowledge is built up over the years, culminating in the year 8 Common Entrance examinations. Technology greatly assists teaching and learning throughout all year groups: years 6 to 8 benefit from personal Surface Go laptops, whilst younger boys have access to iPads and a variety of Science apps. This all contributes to staggering scientific success for the school, and a significant number of boys elect to take the subject for scholarship interviews and examinations. Despite an impressive track record of boys gaining entrance to some of the

country’s top senior schools through Science specialism, boys at the school are never merely working towards a test. With a fully functioning school laboratory in the Senior House, boys in years 4 to 8 have access to stimulating and exciting experiments in a safe environment. The term ‘working scientifically’ has long been a phrase used to describe miscellaneous stand-alone lessons. But St. Anthony’s believe that it should be the point at which children can experience key concepts, skills and processes in order to deepen and broaden their understanding of Science. The experiments conducted at the school are thoroughly thought out and carefully planned in order to enhance the children’s understanding of the topics and theories. The task of equipping the next generation with the tools to engage with an ever-changing world around them in an investigative, critical and optimistic manner, is one that the Science faculty at St Anthony’s takes on with great pride. Giving pupils opportunities to learn to think and work as scientists is central to the teaching practice at the school. Schemes of work are geared towards providing boys with the real-life context that helps to add purpose to the scientific theories being taught throughout the school. Alongside this, extra-curricular Science clubs are on offer; Little House of Science provides the boys with stimulating and

informative opportunities to engage with Science topics during after school sessions. It is St. Anthony’s hope that every child who comes through their doors will encounter a meaningful Science curriculum that enables them to begin to understand the biological, chemical and physical world around them. A pioneering education

As teaching gets underway at Pearson Online Academy UK Global, Jo Vigneron, founding Principal, explains what sets it apart

“You are the disrupters and lid lifters. 100 years from now, you will be remembered as the pioneers of this new form of schooling.” It was the first assembly of the 2021-22 academic year – the first ever assembly for Pearson Online Academy UK Global – and founding principal Jo Vigneron addressed students from the UK to the UAE, Spain to Singapore, Morocco to Mexico. Across the world, these students sat at laptops and tablets, excited to embark on the next stage of their education – these students would be learning wholly online. Online schools are a relatively new concept to many, though Pearson has been running virtual schools in the US for twenty years. Vigneron, who has opened two highly successful schools in recent years, says: “As educators who’ve worked through the last 18 months of change and developments in the sector, gone is the perception that education is limited by location. Our young people today are more

connected than ever and readily embrace global opportunities. It is for us as educators to push open doors and facilitate meaningful links and access to learning opportunities globally.” The structure of learning in an online school is noticeably different. At Pearson Online Academy, students follow the flipped classroom method: study from home, progressing through interactive self-study materials to develop an understanding of subject content before joining ‘LiveLesson’ sessions in virtual classrooms with expert teachers and their fellow students. Sharing her aspirations for the new school, which offers British International GCSEs and A Levels to 14- to 18-year-olds, Vigneron said: “My aspiration for the academy is for it to become the best online school in the world – and I see no reason this cannot happen. We have access to some of the most innovative technology out there, and our teachers – who were recruited from hundreds

of applications – are all experts in their individual fields, bringing with them incredible subject knowledge alongside superb pedagogical skills.” The school provides a rigorous and inspiring academic programme that integrates the best of online and offline activities. Through both core coursework and ’supercurriculum’ experiences, students will develop transferable skills such as self-management and cross-cultural collaboration; build their wellness and become valuable members of society who will go on to lift the lid on the issues of the future. We see it with young children as they play, completely absorbed in their games. At Heathside, we take that natural curiosity and sense of fun and thread it though our teaching and learning so it is at the core of everything we do,” explains Headteacher, Katherine Vintiner. As a non-academically selective Prep school, Heathside aims to help all children to achieve the best possible outcomes that they can, whether that is entrance to a 13+ school, 11+, or nonselective school. Over 25 years, Heathside has developed a culture and ethos that combines fun and love of learning with academic rigour and produces excellent results year on year.

Preparing for exams without putting undue pressure on children is a challenging goal and requires excellent teaching. Parents are increasingly

Nurturing the spark The skill of the Heathside teachers lies in finding the spark of interest in every child and nurturing it as their maturity and understanding of the world develops. Using a topic-based curriculum that changes every six weeks, children are able to dive into subjects and acquire deep knowledge. The topics such as Towers, tunnels and turrets and Paws, claws and whiskers are used as the jumping off point for core subjects of literacy, creative writing, history and geography and STEM.

For children at Heathside, the focus is on enjoying learning – and by nurturing an individual’s progress, children thrive and want to do their best Keeping childhood special A broad curriculum, a stimulating range of clubs and excellent pastoral care are all expected at a good Prep school. So, what else can a school provide that makes it stand out? “At Heathside, spending time on Hampstead Heath is a central part of our school. We use the natural environment to stimulate children’s imaginations and allow them to enjoy free play, climbing trees and building dens. At Heathside, we believe this provides essential balance to a rich and varied curriculum and the pressures of modern city life,” Katherine concludes. Digital excellence

While many schools scrabbled to put together an online offering during the pandemic’s closures, for Queen Anne’s School, digital teaching was already in the DNA The last 18 months have changed education forever, forcing schools to embrace technology in order to make teaching accessible from anywhere, but for Queen Anne’s School in Caversham, Berkshire, an innovative digital approach had been in place for some time. Day-to-day, the QAS digital approach, which is referred to by staff as the ‘one-to-one scheme’, means that each child has a device in the classroom, and teachers and pupils can access and interact with all resources through the cloud. A teacher can share a pupil’s live work on the smartboard for all to discuss. They can even mark work in real time whilst students are working on an exercise. A system called ‘digital ink’ combines a touchscreen, a keyboard and a stylus, allowing pupils access to all the methods they may need – from handwriting their Maths workings to touch-typing as they listen to a History lecture. Of course, this doesn’t mean that everything takes place on the screen. In English, for example, paper, pen and printed books still have an important place and

L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

20_FabricOCT21_Advertorial_Queen Anne.indd 74

traditional methods are combined with the digital approach. Thanks to this set-up, throughout the lockdowns, students were able to complete almost their entire timetable remotely, illustrating the extensive benefits of access to digital excellence. Thomas Lange, Assistant Head – Digital, explains: “The full academic timetable continued online with very minimal loss of learning

time and pupils immediately had access to their resources through the cloud. In more practical subjects our teachers were equipped with the skills and resources to adapt. Art lessons became tutorial videos in some cases, our Director of Sport could be found doing live circuits around her living room and the Music department developed the QA Sounds podcast.”

The quality of the offering at Queen Anne’s is so good that they have just been awarded the prestigious Microsoft Showcase School Award for the third year running. This award acknowledges the extensive digital teaching and learning that has become integral to the school’s approach. The leading girls’ day and boarding school is one of just a small group of schools in the UK to achieve this accolade. Commenting on the achievement, Headmistress, Julia Harrington, explains: “The school has to demonstrate digital excellence in four key areas: teaching and learning that is fit for purpose in the 21st century, innovation, leadership, and inclusion. Having been awarded this status for a third year running, we will continue to enhance the development of lifelong skills including computational thinking, critical analysis and problem solving.” To speak to the admissions team, or to book a place on the next school open morning on 19 November, call 0118 918 7333 or email admissions@qas.org.uk (qas.org.uk)

A new nursery for north London

The St. Anthony’s Schools share a reputation for outstanding academic and pastoral provision; this September saw them begin a new chapter, together

Learning through play is an important element of the Early Years curriculum that is followed at St. Anthony’s new Nursery

On Monday 6 September, St. Anthony’s Nursery, for boys and girls aged 2 ½ to 4, officially opened. In very recent Inspection reports both schools were awarded the highest scores in each category. Children from both schools progress to some of the most highly sought-after schools in the country. More importantly, the boys and girls of St. Anthony’s flourish in an environment which values each of them as unique and wonderful; every child is loved first and foremost for who they are, rather than what they do. Catholic spirituality is the golden thread that unites both schools and provides a context to their respective Wellbeing programmes. Pupils are confident, happy and proud to be part of their school community. The coeducational Nursery is located in Ivy House, the home of St. Anthony’s School for Girls. The magnificent three storey building,

that overlooks Golders Hill Park, boasts spacious classrooms, direct access to outdoor learning spaces, specialist Music, Drama, Art, and Science rooms as well as a multipurpose hall for dining, assemblies, concerts, dance and gymnastics. It offers a unique space from which to deliver the pre-school curriculum. The Nursery curriculum here will follow the statutory framework set out in the Early Years Foundation Stage – emphasising both adult and child-led activities. Attention is given to Communication and Language, Physical Development, and Emotional Development with a key focus on building knowledge, skills, and confidence so that the children will be equipped to transfer to full-time schooling when the time comes. Within this environment, parents are recognised as the first educators. Through working in partnership with them, the team at the Nursery

can ensure that the girls and boys thrive. In this setting the youngest learners will learn to communicate confidently and engage with their indoor learning space, whilst enjoying all that the outdoor natural world of Golders Hill Park has to offer. Priority consideration will be given to parents who wish their sons and daughters to join the Reception classes at either the Boys’ or Girls’ Schools. Families are warmly invited to visit Ivy House to meet Mr Brennan, Head of St. Anthony’s School for Girls and other members of staff, who look forward to showing prospective parents the facilities, sharing their vision for the Nursery and answering questions regarding this exciting new development. The staff are knowledgeable and helpful and work with organically sourced botanicals to produce a selection of gins, vodkas, whiskies and plenty more.” For true gin lovers, Sacred also offers in-house workshops teaching all you need to know about making your own. Wander around Highgate Cemetery and you’ll come across some very famous names – Karl Marx, George Eliot and Douglas Adams all found their final resting place in the iconic cemetery. It’s also the burial spot of Alexander Litvinenko, perhaps the most famous murder victim of our time. The former Russian spy was poisoned with a cup of tea at a Mayfair hotel in 2006. His body is buried 12ft-deep in a lead lined coffin, to prevent visitors suffering radioactive poisoning

MEET THE LOCALS

“The name Highgate entered historical records as early as 1318. Today, the area is one of the most desirable places to live in north London. Highgate offers a lovely village feel and is located close to Kenwood. The Grove is probably the most desirable road in the neighbourhood and has seen numerous celebrity homeowners both past and present.”

Suzi Kalms Manager, Hair of the Dog

“Highgate has been my home for the last 18 years and I have grown to love its wonderful variety of walks, pubs, local shops and cafés. My day usually begins with a gorgeous stroll to Hampstead Heath, around Kenwood House and the ponds with my two dogs, Parker and Rizzle. I sometimes meet friends and their dogs for a gossip and a catch up; Kenwood House’s brilliant café is a perfect place to stop for breakfast. My go-to for an essential morning flat white is Caffè Nero in the village, I grab one to drink as I walk to work, stopping to chat to various locals on my way. I run Hair of the Dog boutique and groomers on the high street. The go-to shop for all your doggy needs, we sell a fantastic selection of dog collars and leads, designer beds and accessories as well as food and treats for dogs and cats. Our groomers have been super busy since the start of the pandemic with so many locals getting puppies. You will often spot some of our furry friends stopping by the front door of the shop to get a tasty doggy treat and a cuddle from me. When I have a break in the day I always love to support our local shops. The Highgate Butchers is fabulous – their meat is superb accompanied by some fresh additions from Greens of Highgate. If you’re into gin, especially when it is made locally, you should definitely check out Sacred Gin on the high street; it’s always fun going in and sampling a gin or two! Aside from gin, I’m a frozen margarita girl – it’s the perfect drink at the end of a busy day. If you’re a fan, I highly recommend you swing by the Red Lion and Sun, where you certainly won’t be disappointed. The food here is always delicious, too. Highgate really is a special place. They say ‘home is where the heart is’ and mine is very much here.

2. Nathan Taylor, Goldschmidt & Howland

“Highgate is home to an array of properties, from grand Georgian townhouses to world-famous modernist buildings, along with what’s rumoured to be the second largest family home after Buckingham Palace. The true beauty of Highgate is its green spaces, independent high street and its residents. Over the past 18 months we have been busiest with the family house market, and particularly sales between £1.5 and £4.5 million.”

“Market activity in Highgate has been strong over the course of the last year. This highly desirable and happening part of north London is home to an abundance of independent shops and boutiques, as well as excellent schools, drawing in families who traditionally seek larger homes. Popular property types include Georgian townhouses and Victorian terraces. I’d expect to see activity levels remain strong for the remainder of the year, as we welcome back international buyers and as restrictions continue to ease.”

flipping awesome

A

s the name suggests, the ‘flipped classroom’ learning model essentially flips the traditional ‘class work/homework’ arrangement so that students consume lessons and course content at home via video and online platforms, and then ask questions, engage in discussions and complete exercises (that is, traditional homework activities) via interactive sessions with the teacher and other students in the classroom. The flipped classroom has been widely adopted at university level, but there is growing evidence that secondary school students also benefit from this method. In one survey, teachers reported that the flipped classroom allowed them to do more activities with students that were high impact. They could guide discussions, supervise group work, and target support to learners who need it – instead of spending class time explaining concepts in a onesize-fits-all way, which can be too slow for some learners and too fast for others. Meanwhile, each

student can learn the concepts at home, at their own pace. One school that takes this approach is Pearson Online Academy UK Global, a fully online school for 14–18-year-olds. Jo Vigneron, Principal, says: “Our students work through materials independently at a time and pace that suits them. Our online platform facilitates assessments that generate deep insights into our students’ learning. Our teachers use this data to plan dynamic, tailored lessons that target misconceptions and gaps in knowledge, and push learning on with no wasted time. Additionally, this frees up our teachers, making them available for individual sessions with students to further accelerate progress and help them with any questions or uncertainties they may have. Each teacher has at least an hour a day available for drop-in sessions with students.” There are clearly benefits in the flipped classroom approach, which Pearson Online Academy, as a fully online school, has been able to put at the forefront of their teaching approach. Jo says: “We couldn’t do this effectively without investing in technology that helps to make a smooth and engaging experience.” The platform they are powered by is used by over 105,000 full time online school pupils worldwide. It is clear that the education landscape has changed more in our post-pandemic world than ever before. And the research shows that innovative and dynamic learning models like the flipped classroom are exceptionally well placed to meet the needs and preferences of our more agile online society. ukglobal.pearsononlineacademy.com

Avenue Pre-Prep & Nursery School What makes the school different? Our strong arts-based curriculum, with music playing a distinctive role. Describe the atmosphere Happy, relaxed, friendly, supportive and buzzing with activity and enthusiasm! I’m so proud of our home from home environment with a committed and long-standing staff. How do you look after wellbeing? We are able to get to know the children very well. We value and respect our relationships with all the children and with their parents. For children with particular concerns, the Worry Monster works well. It is a puppet into whose mouth children can feed their written worries. He eats them and they disappear! Which extra curriculum activities are you proud of? Our strings initiative, which we started in 2016 with the help of the London Music Masters, run by Rob Adediran. I wish I had begun this years ago as it has been a great success, with some children showing real talent, interest and ability with an instrument. How does this support the academic side? Learning a stringed instrument, singing, dancing, acting and painting are all fundamental to the development of a child – involving so many components needed not just in the classroom, but in life generally. Intense focus is required, plus physical coordination, control and careful listening. Puzzle solving is all important as a child begins to translate notation into sound – in the same way a child translates letters and words into sound when learning to read. The social aspect cannot be ignored either. Music and the arts provide what is required by every child for successful learning, for happiness and for life. Our school motto – Anima Mea Cantabit (My Soul Will Sing) – says it all! 2 Highgate Avenue, N6 (020 8348 6815; avenuepreprep.co.uk)

M

ade-to-measure is the name of the game when it comes to high-end fashion, travel and interior design, yet the property market has been slow to cotton on. Breaking this tradition, Octagon Bespoke offers a truly personal service for clients seeking to realise their dream home. Taking them on a journey from finding a plot through to handing over the keys, Octagon Bespoke offers the opportunity to partner with one of Britain’s most respected luxury developers to build a one-of-a-kind property. Recent Bespoke clients include Poornima and Giri, who had long aspired to own an Octagon home. When the time was right, they selected Octagon Bespoke to replace their existing property with a

brand new, made-to-measure home on the same plot in Northwood. Poornima comments: “We had long hoped to have our own Octagon property, as there really is no match in the sector when it comes to quality of build and attention to detail. Over the years, we had viewed many Octagon homes, however none had been in quite the right location for us. Octagon’s Bespoke service turned out to be the perfect option, as it meant we could build our dream home, in the location we already knew and loved.” Their chosen design was a three-storey property with five en suite bedrooms, four reception rooms and a beautifully landscaped garden. Navigating through a challenging planning process, the Octagon Bespoke team helped at every stage of the project.

Poornima comments: “The Octagon team managed a lot of the work during the planning stages, from liaising with neighbours to attending council meetings on our behalf. This was really valuable as it would have been a very timeconsuming procedure for us to carry out ourselves.” Following a year and eight months of construction, stepping into their new home was everything they hoped it would be, and more. “As soon as you step into the property, the sense of light and space immediately hits you. Opening the front door, you can see all the way to the back garden, with the reflective marble flooring and glass windows creating this spa-like atmosphere; it’s both peaceful and wonderfully indulgent.” To the ground floor, the property features an open-plan kitchen/living/dining area, an elegant formal reception room, and separate dining room reserved for entertaining. A TV room is a particular family favourite, with a supersized sofa and television creating the perfect setting for a night in. Taking a striking marble spiral staircase up to the first floor, a large landing connects four bedrooms, each with dedicated dressing areas and en suite bathrooms. To the top floor, a bedroom, lounge, study and bathroom provides the perfect teenager’s retreat. Discussing their experience with Octagon Bespoke, Poornima concludes: “We couldn’t be happier in our new home, it really is a joy to live here and we’re incredibly proud to call it ours. Octagon Bespoke managed to capture exactly what we were seeking in our dream home. We would recommend them to anyone looking to start a similar journey.” Octagon Bespoke undertake projects from £1 million across London and the South-East, and are currently completing projects in Hampstead, Highgate, Knightsbridge and Surrey. LET’S TALK

Q&A

Making money from property

Melanie Wand Garden Design

What made you want to go into garden design? 30 years ago I bought a house in Crouch End with a half acre wilderness as the garden. I realised, despite my graphic design background, this was outside my comfort zone. I took a course at Chelsea Physic Garden led by inspirational Rosemary Alexander, and never looked back.

C

hanges to mortgage interest relief and a surcharge on stamp duty for second homes have made some question whether buy-to-let remains a worthwhile investment. The short answer is that property will always be a great way to grow wealth and create a legacy for the future. Given the right conditions, your property will provide an income from rent while generating capital growth as the value of the property increases. However, though it is largely considered to be one of the safest investments you can make, no investment comes without a degree of risk – knowing where and what to buy and understanding how to attract and keep tenants can make a huge difference to your return on investment. The expert team at Buy to Let Hunter are uniquely placed to offer expert advice on just these sorts of questions. They help to find properties for clients with money to invest in real estate who do not have the time or experience to confidently make these big decisions unassisted. “We search the perfect accommodation to purchase for each client, one which we know will then slot into the serviced accommodation market – these properties will gradually increase in value over time and bring in a fabulous annual return in the short term,” says BTLH’s Lucy Symons.

“People are moving out of cities, and we see that this mid-market in serviced accommodation is currently under served, so we focus our search in carefully selected suburbs around London. Once we’ve helped our clients to find the perfect property, we take full responsibility for redecorating, furnishing and managing it, allowing clients to sit back and enjoy the surety of investing in bricks and mortar, confident that someone else will take care of everything else.” One such client is 18-year-old Hamza, who recently invested in a two-bed semi in Hitchin with help from the team at Buy to Let Hunter. When he was 11, Hamza was in a school run car accident. After a drawn-out investigation, further complicated by Covid, his fiscal compensation was finally awarded last year. He says: “I was reluctant to just invest the money in a pension, but didn’t know the first thing about investing in property. I met with the team and found them relatable and trustworthy – it was clear we were speaking the same language. Working with BTLH was a very positive experience. I cannot imagine doing this on my own.” To discover how Buy to Let Hunter can help you, see buytolethunter.com

What’s your design ethos? One that helps the client to make the most of their garden. We work closely together – their aims remaining central to my design. At the same time my experience in both design and plants will ensure that the plan will be both functional and beautiful. Describe your dream project I take delight in any site large or small, contemporary or traditional. London gardens come in all shapes and sizes, often with tricky angles; I love looking for a bold solution that transforms potential eyesores into wonderful focal assets – an angled planter, an offset floaty bench, a tiered raised bed or a quirky water feature. What do you see as being the major trends in landscaping over the coming months? A trend that I can really get behind is sustainability and environmentalism. I love wild flower meadows, ornamental grasses and living roofs. These can be low maintenance, beautiful and ethically brilliant. What advice would you give to somebody looking for a garden designer? First and foremost, recommendations are key. Beyond that it’s all about the rapport between the client and the designer. (07710 037 002; melaniewand.co.uk)

89

14_FabricOCT21_Directory_1p.indd 89

What can you offer clients that others can’t? Ability to comfortably delineate space is pivotal to any design, and my experience in graphics really enables me to implement that. However, the element that maintains a garden for years to come is good planting. With a deep understanding of structure, habit and colour, I pride myself in finding the right plant for each space.

Since the market re-opened after the first lockdown in June 2020, the sales market has been busy, with buyers looking for larger homes offering gardens and home office space. “In particular, there has been a clear demand for higher value properties in the St. John’s Wood area, and healthy activity in the house market,” Lewis Green of Greenstone Residential Estate Agents tells us. In response to this demand, he has launched a new division, Greenstone Prime, exclusively dealing with the house market on the west side of St. John’s Wood. The department is run by Lewis, who has 30 years’ experience selling and acquiring property in the area and has earned a reputation for offering outstanding service since launching the agency in 1995. Using traditional methods combined with modern advertising techniques, Greenstone Prime are confident in being able to deliver results, whether clients are looking to sell, rent or buy a property in this exclusive area.

Years in the business? 14 I love London because… of its energy and the juxtaposition of the historic with the new and innovative – both in properties and businesses. With all its quirks and hidden gems there’s always something new to discover in London. First London property? My first purchased London home was in Willesden. If I wasn’t an estate agent… I would have loved to become a barrister. Favourite London Street? Greenaway Gardens in Hampstead. Most memorable sales? Two high value house sales within one month of each other, on Greenaway Gardens. Favourite London haunts? I love a wander around the Royal Academy and its surrounding area – followed by a late lunch at Cecconi’s, directly opposite.

What are the biggest property turn-offs? As the expression goes, you never get a second chance to make a first impression. Buying a home is a major investment with nearly all buyers relying heavily on online property portals as their guide, almanac and inspiration. But, while good professional photographs and floor plans give a taster, ultimately, the viewing is the deciding factor. Top of the list for property turn-offs is evidence of damp – both mould and a pungent odour. Noisy neighbours are also a dissuading factor, and most buyers are put off by homes with poor natural light or dark rooms. Guy Fisher, Arlington Residential

Area In Focus

Kensington

One of the most notable and highly regarded London neighbourhoods and, of course, famous for Kensington Palace, the home of Royalty. Adjacent Kensington Gardens, bordering Hyde Park, represent 265 acres of the grandest open space in England, a public realm that is both beautiful to admire and a fabulous place to walk, exercise and to watch London at leisure and is resplendent as the home to the stunning Albert Memorial that in turn points to the most famous concert venue in the world, the Royal Albert Hall. Kensington High Street is the district’s commercial heart filled with boutiques, good restaurants, cafes and notably a number of international embassies. Arguably, it’s the location to make home in the capital.

Mark Sommerville

Our Kensington Sales Expert “My life as a West London agent started way back in 2001, having fallen out of love with being chained to a desk in the City of London as a futures trader.‘ says Mark I gravitated towards Ladbroke Grove initially and immersed myself within the lettings space. This is where I cut my teeth and 20 years later I have added Branch Manager and, now, a Director position to my property CV. Kensington and the surrounding area are neighbourhoods I know well having plied my trade here for two decades. I can best advise you on the most desirable streets (and why), the coolest local shops and amenities, good schools and of course an up to the minute analysis of what the market is doing locally. Property is a people business and the way to succeed is to engage with people properly. The basics of talking to people and giving honest and constructive feedback are the backbone of what I and my team at Bective do”. To contact Mark, please visit our Kensington branch on Hornton Street or contact us via the below details.
