FROM THE EDITOR I had a fright sitting down to plan this issue and realising that Halloween and all things autumnal were on the horizon. Where has this year gone? For cover star Birdy, it passed in a state of rural idyll in the New Forest, where she sat out the various lockdowns with her family. She’s pleased to be back in London now, though, enjoying putting her stamp on her Notting Hill flat and looking forward to her first live show in quite some time. She’ll be performing music from her new album, Young Heart, at the O2 Forum, Kentish Town next month, and I, for one, can’t wait. What a joy it is to be able to see live performances again; if you’re yet to rediscover the pleasure, check out our Culture pages for more great events in and around the Capital. The Natural Eye: Society of Wildlife Artists Annual Exhibition 14-24 October, Mall Galleries
For many of us, the recent lockdowns brought about a newfound appreciation of the varied wildlife found in local parks and gardens. Indeed, birdwatching has seen a ten-fold increase during the pandemic. This wholesome group show reflects our love of nature and features both common and lesser-seen creatures in a series of paintings, prints and sculpture. There’s a strong sub-text to the exhibition, too, drawing our attention to species in crisis. Julia Manning’s series of prints mourns the decline of eels. “The European eel is classed as ‘critically endangered’ by the L UX U RY L ON D ON L I V IN G

The breakout hit of 2019’s Edinburgh Fringe is finally coming to the West End to make waves – and a guaranteed host of new devotees. The Shark is Broken takes audiences back to 1974 and the filming of aquatic thrill-fest, Jaws. Keeping it in the family, the play was co-written by Ian Shaw, the son of actor Robert Shaw, who portrayed shark obsessed fisherman Quint in the film. Ian also stars as his father, alongside Liam Murray Scott as Richard Dreyfuss and Demetri Goritsas as Roy Scheider. Shooting has halted and the film’s lead actors, awash with alcohol and ambition, are stuck on a boat at the mercy of foul weather and a temperamental mechanical co-star. ive years after the release of her third album, Beautiful Lies, singer-songwriter Birdy released her latest, Young Heart, at the end of April this year. Written from her own experience, the record, which is at once raw and beautiful, tells the story of a first major relationship breakdown, exploring the fallout from this: the loneliness and the heartbreak. Next month will see her first live performance of this work, at the O2 Forum Kentish Town. “It has been so overwhelming,” she tells me. Fittingly, for these times, we are talking over Zoom; Birdy is on holiday in Cornwall. “It really has been an amazing response. A lot of this album is much more personal; I was much braver than I have been before. I think that is why I probably feel more connected to it than previous albums. It was also much harder to write, for that reason, which is why it took so long.” At just 25, it seems incredible that Birdy has recorded four albums, let alone had the time for such a long career break, but she has been making music since she was tiny. “My mum is a concert pianist, so she taught me the piano, and then, when I was about seven, I started writing these little classical piano pieces,” she recalls. “And then, one day, I just decided to start singing over it. And I think my parents were listening at the bottom of the stairs, thinking: what’s wrong with her? Because they were really melancholy songs,” she laughs at the memory. That she had talent was obvious. Aged 12, Birdy won the under 18’s category of a talent competition, going on to post a video on YouTube to thank those who had voted for her. It was spotted by a record label, and the rest is history. “They got in contact,” she explains, “then I spent two years writing songs and I signed a publishing deal. And when I was 14, I did this cover of Skinny Love, and that’s when things took off,” she explains. That song, a Bon Iver cover, made it on to the Radio 1 playlist. A year later Birdy received a Grammy nomination along with Mumford & Sons for their song Learn Me Right, which was included on the soundtrack to the Pixar film Brave. In the same year she was asked to perform at the opening ceremony of the Paralympic Games in London. “It is one of my most favourite things I have ever got to do,” she reveals. “It was just so moving – a very special moment for me.” Looking back on that time is surreal, she says. “I don’t think I took it in at the time; it was quite hard to understand what was happening,” she admits. “It is only now, looking back, that I realise how overwhelming it was. We were travelling everywhere and doing shows.” All this at the same time as attending school, like any normal teenager. I wonder how this worked. “I can’t really remember,” she laughs. “It was probably in the summer holidays. It must’ve been, because I never took too much time off school. It was really hard for me to explain to my friends where I had been and what I had been doing. If you haven’t been there yourself, it is impossible to explain.”

At the tail-end of the whirlwind, settling down to begin work on something new was hard. “I think I needed some time at the beginning. I just wasn’t ready to write,” she tells me. “So, I did have three months where I went to India and tried to forget about it completely. A lot of that… being there… the landscapes… being somewhere different… I found that really inspiring.” Back in the UK, the words still weren’t coming. “I wasn’t having much luck writing in London,” she says. “I felt like the music didn’t have the right feel. It wasn’t quite right.” At the time, she was listening to a lot of Joni Mitchell, and, inspired to give her music more of a West Coast, Laurel Canyon feel, she decided to spend some time in LA. “Being away from home and out of your comfort zone, I think that can be quite good for writing. It really helps me,” she explains. “I wanted to just go there and see… I met a few people and suddenly it felt right for the first time. I stayed in Topanga Canyon in this beautiful old house with lots of windows. It was just so lovely being there. I had my friend Lotta staying with me. Actually, she took the picture on the album cover while we were there, and she kind of documented that time.” The photograph shows Birdy, sitting with her guitar, covering her smile with a hand draped in a knitted, multi-coloured striped shawl. With its washed-out colours, and slightly fuzzy focus, it does have a very ’70s feel. Having found her muse on the other side of the Atlantic, Birdy also spent time in Nashville. The undisputed home of Country storytelling, she tells me that it felt like the best place to finish off this folk-influenced tale: “this album really felt like it needed proper stories. There is no pressure there; it is very authentic and feels like people just want to have a nice time making something beautiful. I just loved it there. And then I met Ian Fitchuk and Daniel Tashian – we wrote together first, and then they produced the record.” Birdy flew home from Nashville at the beginning of last year. “I got back literally as the pandemic hit,” she reveals. “We had done all of the recording, and after that it was just the mixing, and I could do that from home – over email and listening to stuff. Actually, it was nice, in a way, because I had a bit more time to focus on the artwork, and we had that year to just get it right. Maybe it would’ve come out sooner in different circumstances, but it was a good thing in the end.”

Piano-led, poetic and very personal, the sound is something of a stylistic departure for Birdy. “The last record, Beautiful Lies, was very dramatic and quite ethereal. Very different to this one,” she agrees. “Almost the opposite. This one is very raw and stripped back, and quite close and personal. I think with the last record, when I was touring, I felt like it was more of a performance. Rather than the real me. It was kind of like a character that I was playing. So, I think that is why I wanted this one to feel very different.” Mixing aside, Birdy sat out the worst of the pandemic in her family home in the New Forest. “We were very lucky,” she admits, “because we have lots of outside space, and we are by the sea, so we could swim and stuff. I was just doing lots of countryside things – I rescued a duck, which was quite a good distraction from everything that was going on,” she laughs. “There was this little duckling who was around a week old, and she was found in a neighbour’s swimming pool. We live close to lots of lakes, so I tried to find her family, but ended up raising her myself. She grew up, and disappeared back into the wild… She has since come back a year later, with her own ducklings,” she smiles. Mental images of the little duckling being fed by hand bring us nicely to an explanation of Birdy’s own name. “My real name is Jasmine,” she says, “but my parents have never called me that. I think that my mum named me, and then thought, ‘that is definitely not her name’. When my parents were feeding me when I was a baby, they said I would open my mouth really wide, like a little bird. So, they called me Birdy.” With a name like that, a career in music was almost inevitable. I wonder if the extended period away from the real world proved a good opportunity for writing, but Birdy shakes her head. “I am only just starting to think about writing again now,” she explains. “I think because it was four years writing the last album, I was quite ready to have a break for a bit. It will be interesting to see what I took from that time – you just take everything in, and then it is in your subconscious. For me, anyway. So, I am sure there will be some ideas inspired by that time …” Birdy is back in London now – Westcountry holidays aside – and pleased to be in her own place in Notting Hill. “I had been back at home for such a long time, so I was ready to leave,” she laughs. “I had just moved to a new flat before the pandemic, and there was nothing really in there. So, I am slowly making it into a home now, but it is taking a while.” It is perhaps unsurprising to hear her describe her style as bohemian and a bit ’70s. “I live near to Portobello Road and there are so many amazing second-hand things on the market. I love finding cool and unique things. That’s really good fun,” she reveals. A country girl at heart, Notting Hill felt like a safe choice to Birdy: “Lots of my family are there, and so it feels familiar, like home to me,” she explains. “I remember going up to visit and being in that area seeing my cousins. So, it is just very familiar to me. It is a really beautiful place – all of those painted houses are really lovely. I need to escape every now and then, so I do go back to the New Forest from time to time, but I really like London.” It is fitting, then, that Birdy’s first live show in some years will be right here in the Capital. Something she is very excited about. “I have had some of the songs on this album for four years now, and I haven’t had the opportunity to play them for anybody, so, yes, I am really excited,” she nods. “We did a live stream in April, and it was amazing, and I loved it, but it is not the same. You don’t have the same energy that you get when there are other people there with you, listening.” Will there be nerves beforehand – especially after such a long hiatus from live shows? “I love the performing, but I do get nervous beforehand,” she agrees. “Once I am on stage, I love it. The hardest bit for me is actually the talking. With the singing I am fine; it is having to talk to the audience that I find really scary. I am shy, and I think that I just feel more confident singing, I’m not sure why that is. It is really nice to be able to connect with people between the songs though, and it does make a huge difference if you are able to do it. So, I am trying to get better at it.” Though she has toured all over the world, Birdy confesses that watching live music was never really something she did much of herself. Something that she intends to put right now that it is once again possible. “When I couldn’t, it made me realise how much more I should’ve been doing it. So, now, I would like to start going to lots more concerts and seeing people,” she tells me. “I was quite bad at it before – probably because I was always so busy. I just didn’t do it enough. I would love to go and see Wise Blood at some point. I think she would be amazing live. I mean, there are so many people I would like to see…” Sentiments I share wholeheartedly: the return of live music is most welcome, and I, for one, can’t wait to see Birdy’s comeback.

In the same week I noticed the bald patches a clip from Fleabag appeared on my feed: the one in which Fleabag marches her sister back into the hairdressers demanding compensation for Claire’s hilariously lopsided ‘pencil’ cut. In the altercation she announces, assuredly, “Hair is everything. We wish it wasn’t, so we could actually think about something else occasionally, but it is!” The patches were a bolt out of the blue for me. I’d made it through 2020, things were finally looking up – alopecia areata, an auto-immune disease, was not on my 2021 bingo card. I’ve always been blessed with a mane of thick hair, so much so that I’d have an annual moan on the hottest days of the year – to the annoyance of my thinner haired friends. Luckily, the two patches just above the nape of my neck, around an inch and a half in diameter, were obscured by the rest of my barnet. But the thing about alopecia is the fear. Is this just the beginning? Am I going to lose it all? Will it ever grow back? In shock and tears I turned to healthy hair guru Simone Thomas who, I’d heard, had treated a woman who’d lost it all after being hospitalised with Covid and was now sporting a lustrous full head of hair. Relieved to be in the best hands – Simone has a clinic on Harley Street and has herself suffered hair loss – I send off hair and nail samples for testing. We would have done this in person but in the throes of lockdown, everything – even the magic stuff – happened over Zoom, and yet I
couldn’t have felt more cared for. Simone works with homeopath extraordinaire Debbie Rix, who runs my samples though her machine, looking for imbalances and deficiencies, what can be improved diet-wise, and what I need to cut out. I’m warned that it can be a bit spooky, and that I may find the experience emotional, even, but I’m encouraged to trust the process. It’s incredible what can be gleaned about our health from tiny hair and nail samples, and sure enough, Debbie knows everything from my sinus troubles (I had surgery a few years back) to my dire need post-lockdown to see a chiropractor
(thanks, childbirth). Incredibly, this isn’t just a snapshot of my health today. With amazing accuracy Debbie picks up on ailments and injuries from the past that my body is hanging onto. I am spooked and seriously impressed. Showstopping teas Baker to the stars, Lily Vanilli is set to launch a decadent afternoon tea in the green marble-lined Grand Saloon at the newly renovated Theatre Royal Drury Lane this month. Lily’s menu, which will be available to non-theatre goers, too, takes inspiration from the Regency period, with sweet treats including delicate pink lemonade tarts with elderflower jelly set with tiny hand-cast, gilded chocolate cherubs. Meanwhile, the savoury offering sees the likes of a signature Lily Vanilli puff pastry sausage roll made with Cornish sausage meat, roast bacon lardons and a cider vinegar deglaze. Warm scones are served with salted whipped butter, as well as the usual cream and homemade jam. Rounding off proceedings, a trolley will roam the room serving scoops of heady absinthe mint choc chip ice cream, made to a top-secret recipe. And everything will be served on a tea service designed by British designers Kit and Willow Kemp, featuring mythical characters taken from costume design illustrations for the theatre’s ballets, comic operas, pantomimes and Edwardian musical comedies over the years. Bettina Campolucci Bordi’s Spiced Pumpkin Pie
SERVES 6-8
West Hampstead’s plant-based chef Bettina Campolucci Bordi found fame on social media through her blog, Bettina’s Kitchen. Five years later, she’s just released her third recipe book, Celebrate (£20, Hardie Grant). It’s full of delicious recipes that are perfect for celebrations and special occasions. Next up on the annual calendar of events, Halloween – so, what does she recommend for spooky gatherings? “I couldn’t leave the pumpkin pie out, could I?” she says. “This lovely pie includes a pinch of spice and has lots of creamy texture. It goes well with ice cream or some whipped cream! It’s a must in my humble opinion.”
INGREDIENTS For the pastry: 250g plain (all-purpose) flour | pinch of salt | pinch of sugar | 115g vegan butter, chopped into small pieces, plus extra for greasing | 60ml plant milk (I like oat milk) For the filling: 480g pumpkin purée (see Cook’s Tips) | 120g ground almonds (almond meal) | 100g brown or coconut sugar | 100ml plant milk | 60g vegan butter | 60g plain (allpurpose) flour | 2cm piece of ginger root, peeled and grated | 1 tsp ground cinnamon | 1 tsp ground cardamom | 1⁄2 tsp ground cloves | 1⁄2 tsp baking powder To serve: 280ml whippable plant cream | 1tbs maple syrup | 1 vanilla pod (bean), split and the seeds scraped out, or 1 tsp vanilla paste or extract METHOD 1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F/gas 4). Grease a cake or pie

An easy way to cook a whole pumpkin, skin and all, is to roast it in the oven at 180°C (350°F/gas 4) for 1 hour. Once cooked, simply cut off the top, remove the seeds and use the cooked pumpkin for this and other recipes, such as risottos and salads. The pumpkin will last a week in the fridge, and you can dip into it whenever you need it!

pan (with a removable base so the pie will come out easily) with some butter. 2. Make the pastry by adding all the dry ingredients to a bowl. Use your hands to rub the chopped butter into the flour mix. Then add the milk little by little and mix well to form a dough. You can either use the pastry straightaway or, if you have time, rest it somewhere warm for 15–20 minutes. Alternatively, keep in the fridge overnight. 3. Roll the pastry dough into a disc that’s larger than the base of the cake/pie pan, with enough to go up the sides. Put the pastry in the pan and use your index fingers and thumbs to press into the base and sides so it lines the whole pan. Trim off any excess dough that comes over the edges with a knife. You can use the excess dough to create a criss cross pattern on top of the pie if you like. 4. Prick the base of the pastry with a fork and pre-cook in the oven for 10 minutes. 5. Meanwhile, add all the ingredients for the filling to a food processor or blender and blitz until well combined. 6. When the pie case is ready, remove from the oven and add the pumpkin filling. Smooth the filling flat with a palette knife, then bake in the oven for 45 minutes. 7. While the pie is baking, whip the cream with the maple syrup and vanilla. Chill in the fridge until you are ready to serve. 8. Once the pie is ready, remove from the oven and allow to cool completely before serving with the whipped cream.

GROWN UP GLAMOUR If the weather is to keep you prisoner, where better than five-star hotel, Le Hotel Majestic Barrière on the Croisette, Cannes
partly, in the warmth of the welcome and the Majestic is keen to make sure its guests are thoroughly at home. My friend Claudia remembers staying here as a child with her family in the 1970s. She licks her lips recalling the steak tartare some thirty-odd years later, so my expectations are high – and I am not disappointed. When in France… Fois gras is a guilty pleasure but at Fouquet’s – the Majestic’s expansive bar and Parisian-style luxury brasserie – the pleasure easily outweighs the guilt. Classic French dishes such as duck fillet and pepper beef sit alongside fish and chips and burgers. We try the squid and the pan-fried scallops on a smooth buttery artichoke puree. The Mediterranean influence is clear from the number of fish dishes on the menu. It takes us an age to choose the Hautes Côtes de Nuit Domaine Chambris Bourgogne but we are delighted with a white that can sit happily with our seafood and hold its own against the fois gras. I indulge in breakfast in my room on day one and I feel a little bit of a princess as I nibble tiny pastries and sip café au lait, but I am glad to have made it to the breakfast buffet the following morning where I chip chunks off a laptop-sized honeycomb to sweeten my pancakes and consider having a glass of Champagne to get the day started. On Saturday night we eat at La Terrasse du Gray, the gourmet restaurant at the Majestic’s sister hotel just around the corner, Le Gray D’Albion. Here the menu relies on seasonal produce and experiments with more international flavours. Risottos and ravioli remind us that we are not all that far away from Italy, but the latter comes gyoza “dumpling-style” stuffed with prawns, while the sea bream carpaccio is tangy with a mango and coriander salsa. I plump for the burrata and grilled zucchini salad to start. (It’s not been that long since lunch where I’m working my way through the chef’s daily specials at Fouquet’s.) Mains include a wok section with a tempting-sounding Peking duck glazed with honey from the restaurant’s own hives while the rest of the menu feels familiarly Mediterranean with a twist: grilled lamb chops and caponata, octopus with preserved lemon, pan-fried beef brightened up with a chimichurri condiment. Dating from 1926, the Majestic has undergone major renovations in the last two decades, evolving to incorporate the most modern ideals of luxury while keeping true to its roots. The

annes is not usually shrouded in mist nor virtually unreachable on roads turned to rivers. Ordinarily the French Riviera is irresistibly filmic, bathed in glorious sunshine, the shushing of cicadas soothingly audible above the gentle lapping of the Med… But visiting the Le Hotel Majestic Barrière during dramatic autumn storms gave me the opportunity to fully luxuriate in the old school comfort and style of a Riviera icon where film festival stars are wont to stay. My room has an undisturbed view over a slate grey sea. Palm trees wave bravely in the squall. But I can easily imagine how grateful I would be for the awning that keeps the worst of the rain off the sun loungers were the sun to require me to lounge on a balcony that is really too grand to be a mere balcony but is more of a private terrace. In a separate wing, the hotel’s most sumptuous suites all face directly onto the famous red-carpeted steps of the Palais des Festivals up which have glided stars from Sophia Loren to Angelina Jolie – in fact every imaginable A-lister since the Cannes Film Festival began in 1946. Each impressive suite is decorated in a distinct style: the fashionably chic Dior; the Riviera, whose nautical theme recalls the spirit of a luxury liner; a set of rooms celebrating cinematic style; and the classy classic, Morgan. The penthouse has its own private rooftop pool with sea view. Lesser folk make do with the hotel’s (still rather fabulous) heated seaside pool or its private beach. But as much as the Majestic revels in its very grown up glamour, the hotel is as welcoming to families and is justly proud of its special film-making club for the kids, part of the Le Studio by Petit VIP concept, which hosts family fun workshops and 5-star activities for children. vast entrance hall is decorated in Venetian-style sumptuousness, all gold and glittering lights. I nestle happily with my laptop in the spacious lounge and can see why the hotel is popular with business travellers and for conferences. Sparkling chandeliers, glass, mirrors, leather, and gilt all go a long way to take the edge off a Powerpoint presentation. The restoration of this part of the hotel, unveiled during the 2016 film festival, was inspired by Art Deco designer Émile-Jacques Ruhlmann, at work in the 1920s and 30s. Amid the dreamy ivory and cream interior – at once grand and yet comfy – I expect Hercule Poirot to walk in at any moment. When the sun breaks through, I venture out for a turn around the harbour to admire the yachts in temporary residence. I stroll past the luxury outlets that line the street outside the hotel, Cannes’ famous Boulevard de la Croisette: Prada, Gucci, Dior. Despite the hype, the old town retains the charm of the fishing village it once was. A sudden downpour, though, and it’s not so much Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief as Mr Bean’s Holiday, but there is sanctuary in the Diane Barrière spa, where I relax on a heated bed in a lilac-lit room, massaged with scented oils. Partnering with skincare experts Biologique Recherche, the wellness centre has a range of beauty treatments fit for any aspiring starlet, while the Caribbean-infused Ligne St Barth line promotes the three Rs: relaxation, restoration, rejuvenation. As I am packing to leave, a call comes from the concierge to tell me that the roads are closing between Cannes and Nice airport. By the time I make it to the front desk, taxis are no longer picking up. Enter Joel, bellboy extraordinaire, tasked with getting me to the airport come hell or high water. At last I feel I am starring in my own movie as we dash up the motorway, wiggle along mountain lanes, edge through flooded roads and make it, finally, to the airport. If only Cary Grant had been waiting there for me…

This characterful property is all about the backstory – from architecture to object
A
s creative director of Shutter Hub, an organisation that supports talented snappers across the globe – and as a photographer herself – Karen knows a thing or two about good light. In fact, it’s top of her list of non-negotiables when buying a home. “I love big windows and seeing the change in light through the seasons, the height and the glow of the sunlight, especially when dappled through trees, it brings me great joy every day,” she says. Karen has lived in her current abode – a 1930s four-bedroomed house complete with a pitched gabled roof, tall chimneys, large rooms, and her requisite big bay windows – for 11 years. She shares the house with partner Adam and their 14-year-old rescue cat, Tutti Biscotti, who by all accounts appreciates the property’s abundance of sunlight as much as Karen does. The definition of a doer-upper, the house had been empty for some time before it came into their hands. Karen describes the broken windows, wallpapered ceilings, curtain pelmets, gloomy dark red walls “and an old Axminister carpet that was so worn, coming down the stairs was like skidding on ice.” But, conversely, this was all part of the plan. In fact, for Karen, it was the dream. “I prefer places that haven’t been touched for years,” she explains, “with old, coloured bathrooms, faded wallpaper and barely any kitchen. I love the idea of stories being lived out in theses spaces – and being allowed to be part of that.” She goes on to describe the couple’s first night in the house, a particularly frosty January, huddled under the duvet. “The next morning, Adam took a hammer to the heating pump and got it working. The boiler was old and leaky, so he designed a new heating system to incorporate a wood burner that can heat the water, too.” Adam works as an environmental engineering consultant, which clearly has its benefits when you have grand designs on bringing a neglected period property back to life. Karen’s interiors style is calm but at the same time, eclectic. And that’s entirely in sympathy with the architecture and original fittings. “If something looks nice and feels nice, it’s welcome,” she says. “Especially if it’s in a muted tone.” Indeed, the house is rich in interesting artworks and artefacts, but it never feels cluttered. There’s order to the eclecticism. Her keen eye for light and space sees earthy, neutral shades on the walls and the paint reflects the light beautifully. A keen collector, Karen’s homely finds come from auction houses, junk shops and charity shops – pieces she’s thoughtfully curated over the years. “I’ve been buying things since I was a child,” she

confirms. “I remember seeing this beautiful plate, Homemaker design, and I decided I’d buy it and start a collection for when I grew up and had my own home. It was a second, the transfer was slightly blurred, but at 15p it was what I could afford. I later sold it for £50.” Not afraid to mix the old with the new, veritable antiques are flanked with Instagram-worthy Ikea hacks. Karen’s desk, for example, is an old Georgian dining table, while the long set of shelves in the living room are crafted from three Ikea bookcases, which Adam cut down, reworked and painted. “I don’t mind where things come from,” Karen says. “I just want them to be beautiful – and ideally not brand new.” Her passion is not only collecting but creative repurposing, too. “The oak doors in our back hall came from an old office on the Immingham docks that was being demolished,” Karen explains. “In the conservatory there’s an old table from a factory with some of my Pelargonium plant collection on, I have a few old factory storage bins, and old ballot boxes, and school chairs from another building that was being torn down.” Karen’s favourite things in the house tell stories, and she could wax lyrical about their origins and how they came into her possession, it’s fascinating. Some of them come with a personal narrative, too. The vintage Sklo Union vase that she found in her grandmother’s bin, for example. “When she died, we went to clear her house, her neighbour had also died and whoever had emptied their place had put everything into the neighbour’s dustbins. It seemed so sad. The vase is beautiful, heavy clear glass with straight sides that undulate like ribbons… I imagine it was probably a wedding gift, or something significant and important to someone, but literally someone else’s rubbish. It’s worth about £80, but I’ll keep it forever.” Karen also describes the cushions needlepointed by her mum, filled with feathers and backed in thick velvet. “They are just lovely.” The chairs in the conservatory were bought by Karen’s grandmother at auction in the 1950s, and are said to have come off the Queen Mary. And the beautiful oak cupboard in the hallway that doubles as a surface for Karen’s pottery collection, was a gift from her late friend, Wendy. Between publishing Shutter Hub’s first book, launching the Auto Photo Awards, and penning and photographing travel features, Karen is one busy woman. Her calm but eclectic home is a sanctuary to return to, but beyond that, it is a home full of history and character. “I want to live in a house that inspires me and gives me space,” she says. “I love to think about how other people lived in this house before us, and that sense of memory, the clues that they were here – that kind of thing feels like magic.”

Osian (Year 6) Over the course of last term Osian and his brother (KS Alumnus) Gethin collected old sports kit and football boots from friends and fellow KS pupils in order to donate it to the Harrow Club for underprivileged children, which has five branches across London. Gethin travelled to the West London branch to hand over the donations, met with Steve Davies, Senior Programmes Manager of the club, and had a tour around the facilities. Osian said: “We found out that many of the employees at the club had been buying football kit for the children from their own money because the children’s families can’t afford new kit for them.” The Harrow Club was extremely grateful for Osian and Gethin’s effort in collecting and delivering all the kit. Kasia (Year 6) Lockdown got lots of us thinking about what’s important and for one student, Kasia, it meant concentrating on bettering the environment. Inspired by the Knightsbridge School weekly eco challenges that included making an insect hotel, cooking a meal solely using local produce and planting herbs. After creating a montage video of all her conservation

Supporting our children in a hothouse pandemic: promoting resilience and embracing new norms Resilience and adaptability have fast become the most desirable life skills in today’s young people. Pre-Covid-19, it was admirable if our children dusted themselves off and carried on after reading a test question wrong or conceding a try on the rugby pitch, but ultimately, the more they practised the further they would navigate well-trodden ground to success. he task of making sense of how the world around us works is a daunting one, fraught with numerous questions and challenges. But, when the curriculum engages meaningfully, the plethora of insightful questions from students can be amazing. At St. Anthony’s, boys are equipped with the tools needed to understand the basics of the biological, chemical and physical world around them, in a curriculum that gives space for wonder and awe. The arc of each boy’s Science learning journey, from reception to year 8, is something that is planned with great focus at the school. The aim of the Science faculty is for each boy to grow in confidence and enjoyment as they explore the mechanics of the visible and invisible world. A richly broad body of scientific knowledge is built up over the years, culminating in the year 8 Common Entrance examinations. Digital excellence
While many schools scrabbled to put together an online offering during the pandemic’s closures, for Queen Anne’s School, digital teaching was already in the DNA The last 18 months have changed education forever, forcing schools to embrace technology in order to make teaching accessible from anywhere, but for Queen Anne’s School in Caversham, Berkshire, an innovative digital approach had been in place for some time. Day-to-day, the QAS digital approach, which is referred to by staff as the ‘one-to-one scheme’, means that each child has a device in the classroom, and teachers and pupils can access and interact with all resources through the cloud. A teacher can share a pupil’s live work on the smartboard for all to discuss. They can even mark work in real time whilst students are working on an exercise. A system called ‘digital ink’ combines a touchscreen, a keyboard and a stylus, allowing pupils access to all the methods they may need – from handwriting their Maths workings to touch-typing as they listen to a History lecture. Of course, this doesn’t mean that everything takes place on the screen. In English, for example, paper, pen and printed books still have an important place and

traditional methods are combined with the digital approach. Thanks to this set-up, throughout the lockdowns, students were able to complete almost their entire timetable remotely, illustrating the extensive benefits of access to digital excellence. Thomas Lange, Assistant Head – Digital, explains: “The full academic timetable continued online with very minimal loss of learning
time and pupils immediately had access to their resources through the cloud. In more practical subjects our teachers were equipped with the skills and resources to adapt. Art lessons became tutorial videos in some cases, our Director of Sport could be found doing live circuits around her living room and the Music department developed the QA Sounds podcast.”

Wander around Highgate Cemetery and you’ll come across some very famous names – Karl Marx, George Eliot and Douglas Adams all found their final resting place in the iconic cemetery. The go-to shop for all your doggy needs, we sell a fantastic selection of dog collars and leads, designer beds and accessories as well as food and treats for dogs and cats. Our groomers have been super busy since the start of the pandemic with so many locals getting puppies. You will often spot some of our furry friends stopping by the front door of the shop to get a tasty doggy treat and a cuddle from me. When I have a break in the day I always love to support our local shops. The Highgate Butchers is fabulous – their meat is superb accompanied by some fresh additions from Greens of Highgate. If you’re into gin, especially when it is made locally, you should definitely check out Sacred Gin on the high street; it’s always fun going in and sampling a gin or two! Aside from gin, I’m a frozen margarita girl – it’s the perfect drink at the end of a busy day. If you’re a fan, I highly recommend you swing by the Red Lion and Sun, where you certainly won’t be disappointed. The food here is always delicious, too. Highgate really is a special place. They say ‘home is where the heart is’ and mine is very much here.

A
s the name suggests, the ‘flipped classroom’ learning model essentially flips the traditional ‘class work/homework’ arrangement so that students consume lessons and course content at home via video and online platforms, and then ask questions, engage in discussions and complete exercises (that is, traditional homework activities) via interactive sessions with the teacher and other students in the classroom. The flipped classroom has been widely adopted at university level, but there is growing evidence that secondary school students also benefit from this method. In one survey, teachers reported that the flipped classroom allowed them to do more activities with students that were high impact. They could guide discussions, supervise group work, and target support to learners who need it – instead of spending class time explaining concepts in a onesize-fits-all way, which can be too slow for some learners and too fast for others. Meanwhile, each
student can learn the concepts at home, at their own pace. One school that takes this approach is Pearson Online Academy UK Global, a fully online school for 14–18-year-olds. I wish I had begun this years ago as it has been a great success, with some children showing real talent, interest and ability with an instrument. How does this support the academic side? Learning a stringed instrument, singing, dancing, acting and painting are all fundamental to the development of a child – involving so many components needed not just in the classroom, but in life generally. Intense focus is required, plus physical coordination, control and careful listening. Puzzle solving is all important as a child begins to translate notation into sound – in the same way a child translates letters and words into sound when learning to read. The social aspect cannot be ignored either. Music and the arts provide what is required by every child for successful learning, for happiness and for life. What made you want to go into garden design? 30 years ago I bought a house in Crouch End with a half acre wilderness as the garden. I realised, despite my graphic design background, this was outside my comfort zone. I took a course at Chelsea Physic Garden led by inspirational Rosemary Alexander, and never looked back.

What’s your design ethos? One that helps the client to make the most of their garden. We work closely together – their aims remaining central to my design. Describe your dream project I take delight in any site large or small, contemporary or traditional. London gardens come in all shapes and sizes, often with tricky angles; I love looking for a bold solution that transforms potential eyesores into wonderful focal assets – an angled planter, an offset floaty bench, a tiered raised bed or a quirky water feature. What do you see as being the major trends in landscaping over the coming months? A trend that I can really get behind is sustainability and environmentalism. I love wild flower meadows, ornamental grasses and living roofs. These can be low maintenance, beautiful and ethically brilliant. What advice would you give to somebody looking for a garden designer?
