Chiaroscuro

Until 5 October | Bush Theatre Chiaroscuro, meaning the treatment of light and shade in drawing or painting, is the name given to Jackie Kay’s exploration of female identity and the experiences of women of colour. This will be director Lynette Linton’s first production as artist director here, as she breathes new life into the 1986 masterpiece. What starts out as a dinner party with friends, soon leads to a discussion of colourism, loss of the mother tongue, and homosexuality within the black community. WHAT’ S I N A NAM E ? We talk to Indira Varma about current roles, the changing face of the acting world and why she’s proud to have held on to her own identity Words Liz Skone James

The working day is drawing to a close for me, but for Indira Varma it has only just begun; after our chat she’s heading off to The Old Vic where she is currently appearing in Present Laughter. There are a few weeks left of the run, which she has mixed feelings about. “I’m a mum and I really miss not being around at bedtime. Even though my daughter is older. There is that winding down time after school, you know. I really miss that,” she explains. But the production has, she says, been better than she dreamed. “We’ve done some amazing things in it, where we’ve had a gender swap, so suddenly it feels incredibly modern,” she reveals. “So actually, although it is totally Noël Coward, and we are serving him well, it feels very current. The reception has been beyond our expectations. And we are doing an NT Live, so people who have missed this run will get to see it in November some time. So that is great.” Doing theatre always gives her a buzz, she says. “You have to keep it alive, and that is definitely the challenge. I think that you end up excavating characters and stories in totally different ways. And you go through sort of difficult patches where you are like: I’ve lost my laugh. Or: this is so boring… But then you always come through,” she grins.

And acting on the London stage will always have the appeal of keeping her at home, amongst loved ones in the city that she adores. “It is just really sociable – I have had people in every single night, so it has been really fun catching up with friends. Because when you are filming, you are often too busy. I am not drinking at the beginning of the week, because otherwise I would just be floored by the end!” she laughs. One unexpected visitor at a recent performance was Dame Maggie Smith. An actor who has inspired Indira for many years: “when I was growing up in Bath, I remember seeing her in Lettice and Lovage and thinking that it was just the most amazing performance. It totally captured my imagination. And she is still at it. And that, to me, is remarkable,” Indira explains. She reveals how Maggie came backstage to have a look around the dressing rooms after watching Present Laughter. “And she was describing Laurence Olivier, you know saying, ‘that was the shower he used to wash off his makeup in, using Fairy Liquid’,” she recalls, laughing. “I just felt so blessed. It was like being given a royal nod or something. It is not like she came and said, ‘darling, you were so amazing,’ it wasn’t like that. It was just that she shared some of her experience and it was really special,” she grins. Indira is currently appearing on screens as Piety Breakspear in Amazon Prime’s highly anticipated Carnival Row. Set in a Victorian fantasy world, it is filled with mythological immigrant creatures that are feared by humans and forbidden to live with freedom. “I never really understood the point of fantasy,” she confesses. “But reading this, I was like, oh my God, I get it. Because it is like a metaphor or an allegory – I don’t know the right word – but it is really talking about immigration and what it means…” “There is this human world which has been invaded by these mythological creatures,” Indira tells me. “There has been a war that was perpetrated by the humans in other worlds. So, all of these fairies, and pixies and centaurs and fawns, they come to the human world because they need to survive. And it explores that whole notion of how much do you give to people in need? And it is really interesting, this notion of other and how we deal with it.” The production values are, she says, very high. “They have tried to do as little green screen as possible. The result is just absolutely stunning.” The series is certainly a sign of just how much television has changed since Indira started out in the industry. “There is so much output, you can make anything you want. And TV is king. Film used to be king, but now there is an incredible level of artistry in TV and it is giving a huge amount of opportunity to people,” she smiles. There’s still something to be said for the silver screen though, and Indira’s next big role is in Official Secrets. The film tells the true story of Katharine Gun, the GCHQ whistleblower who leaked information to The Observer about an illegal NSA spy operation designed to push the UN Security Council into sanctioning the 2003 invasion of Iraq. Indira plays Shami Chakrabarti, who, as director of Liberty at that time, was part of Katharine’s defence team. It was a very interesting proposition, Indira says. “I was really excited to be a part of telling the story. To have the courage to do something like what Katharine did for what you believe

in, and to do it for the good of the country, or the world – I think it is phenomenal. I think it is quite hilarious that I am playing Shami Chakrabarti though. I look nothing like her! It was great, because I got to meet Shami, and have tea with her in the House of Lords. So that was really good fun.” Indira can also currently be seen playing the part of Charlotte in Aisling Bea’s poignant new Channel 4 comedy, This Way Up, about mental health and the pursuit of happiness. They are all very different roles, and I wonder what her criteria are when it comes to choosing jobs. “I always find that question difficult, because ultimately you have to pay the rent,” she shrugs. “I think that generally the power that we have as actors is to say no. And that power only comes when you have got something else to say yes to. And in recent years I have had that privilege, yes.” Ultimately, she says, she is looking for something that is well written: “because I come from a theatre background, I think that the script is always the most important,” she tells me. “And that is where the interest lies for me. If it is an interesting story, or a really good script, you know you are really going to get your teeth into something, and you are going to be able to explore and build upon it.” Then there’s the quest for variety: “I am not going to pretend that I am a transformer,” she laughs. “But I like to inhabit different characters and to tell their stories. And hopefully you get to do myriad characters through the course of your career.” She recalls, when she was first starting out, accepting a part in the film Kama Sutra, and afterwards being constantly asked to: “do films with nudity and to play Asian characters, or to be exotic. And I didn’t want to just repeat myself.” At that time Indira believes she was in danger of being fixed as an Asian actress (in fact she was born in England to a Swiss mother and an Indian father), which had the potential to stall her career. That it didn’t is perhaps, she says, her biggest achievement. “When I was at drama school there were teachers who said that they thought I should change my name, because it is a very Indian name,” she reveals. “Maybe, if I had changed my name to Sarah Jane or something, you wouldn’t even be able to place me, ethnically. Over the years, I have had my frustrations of going ‘argh, if only I had changed my name, I might be seen for more stuff or given more opportunities’. But actually, I think I am proud that I have stuck to my name and I have doggedly carried on. I feel quite pleased about that,” she nods. One wonders if she would’ve been given the same advice if she were at drama school now. Possibly not. Things are changing, she thinks. “There are conversations that we have had since drama school, regarding gender, regarding ethnicity, representation across every minority group. There are people who are paying attention, and who want to make more change. There are people in power now who are women of colour, and they want to see their worlds represented,” she nods. “I think it is work in progress. I think that everybody’s story needs telling. White middle class, middle aged men’s stories need telling too – we can’t suddenly leave them out of the conversation. Everybody’s story needs telling, and they need to be told in a non-clichéd way. It can’t just be a box ticking exercise,” she concludes. That said, the industry has served Indira well. Is it a career she would want for her own daughter? “Erm, I’m not sure,” she laughs. “I wouldn’t want her to do it as a child. Childhood is the rehearsal process – it should be about constant reinvention and discovering who you are and changing your mind about it. Would I… God it hurts to commit… Yeah, I guess, but I would be really wary and I would probably try and stop her, and if she was single-minded enough, and she had the talent and the ambition combined, and the discipline, then I wouldn’t try to stop her.” Carnival Row is on Amazon Prime now. T

ucked away down a mews in Notting Hill is Cloud Twelve, a family wellness and lifestyle club offering sanctuary to frazzled locals. While the Family Space is a members-only area, tailored to families with young children, the gorgeous wellness facilities and brasserie are aimed at a more grown-up audience of both members and non-members. Which is good news for me, as I’ve booked to see complementary health expert Sanae Baba. Trained in traditional Chinese medicine and acupuncture, as well as craniosacral therapy, Sanae (who works from Cloud Twelve once a week), kicks off with an in-depth consultation touching on my health and lifestyle. Agreeing to focus primarily on an ongoing lower back issue and to kick-start some detoxing, she begins with the cupping technique made famous by Gwyneth Paltrow. Using this, and some vigorous massage, she sets to work – it’s intense but bearable. I’m strangely proud of the vivid red marks that are left behind. She then covers me in needles, in my back, legs and ankles. I barely feel them going in and Sanae explains that she is working on detoxing and treating various body imbalances that she has picked up on. Apparently, my glutes aren’t engaged properly and I’m using my lower legs more than my upper. She encourages me to do more exercises on my hip flexors and inner thighs. This completely tallies with the diagnosis from my chiropractor, so it’s hugely encouraging to know that I’m on the right track. An infrared heat lamp is trained on me while the needles get to work, and I’m then flipped over and needled some more. Finally, I’m treated to craniosacral therapy. It’s cosy and warm and I don’t really want to get off the bed at the end, but home I must reluctantly go. I feel like I am, appropriately enough, floating in the clouds. Heritage Restaurant and Bar

H

eritage, a new Soho eaterie billed as London’s first modern Swiss-inspired restaurant, had me Rolodexing through everything Helvetian in my memory palace in anticipation. And I was right to hover at Heidi. The most notable part of that book for eightyear-old me was the wonder of melted cheese for breakfast, lunch and dinner. And if you love melted cheese (and frankly, who doesn’t?) you will almost certainly love Heritage. Firstly, the enthusiastic waiter insisted (and how very right he was) that we should try the rösti. A lesser-known Swiss dish than its unctuous sibling the fondue, the rösti was as delicious as crisp potato shreds draped in warm Comté cheese and scattered with sizzling salty bacon could be. Comfort food par excellence. Plates are for sharing at Heritage and we fought over every last scrap. But Heritage is also about a modern twist and the steak tartare was reinvented as a dry-aged beef with beetroot and yoghurt dressing; a pleasingly subtle flavour with earthy notes. We then opted for the raclette, another Swiss success story. Here, cheese is designed to melt over a mix of Cobble Lane Cured charcuterie, pickles and tiny potatoes aided by a mini heater; but health and safety meant that the cheese was brought to the table ready to be sliced, dripping, from its round directly onto the accoutrements. It was more theatrical than the fondue, yet we still enviously eyed our neighbours dipping happily into Heritage’s signature dish. But the waiter again insisted (and again, he was probably right) that we had ordered enough. This is not food for the faint hearted. Chef Aarik Persaud has, however, liberally sprinkled the menu with lighter options such as the lobster and roasted fennel tart, while impressive dishes for two include Chateaubriand of Dedham Vale beef cooked at a table-top charbonnade grill. Innovation in London is hard to pull off. Yes, we’ve seen it all. And where Heritage really excelled was in the drinks department. Cocktails created by mixologist Zoran Peric include the refreshing Yuzu Collins, made with Roku gin, elderflower liqueur, yuzu juice and fresh ginger. Bubbly sommelier Elena Serban was so enthused by her wine list with an Alpine edge that I couldn’t resist trying a Swiss Viognier: the fresh, tangy flavour with hints of grapefruit is a lovely foil to silky cheese dishes. The cellar includes a number of New World wines and the final hurrah paired a syrupy Australian dessert wine with toothsome figs, honey, walnuts and a last tasty slice of you-know-what. Say cheese If your feelings about cheese are anything like ours, all your foodie dreams are about to come true, with a new opening from the team behind The Cheese Bar. Mathew Carver, known for championing the best of British cheese, is ripping up the rulebook with the world’s first cheese conveyor belt at the highly-anticipated Seven Dials Market (from the Capital’s leading street food organisation KERB). Opening this month, Pick & Cheese will offer a bespoke cheese experience: plate after plate of small producer cheese will wind its way around the restaurant atop a 40 metre-long belt, allowing diners to follow Mathew’s suggested tasting flights, or simply help themselves to the dishes that take their fancy. The cheese, all sourced from UK-based farms and urban cheesemakers, reflects Mathew’s continued passion for supporting small producers. Each will be paired with an individual condiment – from Coolea with hazelnut brittle, to fresh ricotta with sherry cherries – and handmade ceramic plates will be colour-coded to reflect different prices. Cook this: Lina Stores’ Burrata pansoti with Datterini tomato, toasted pine nuts and basil Marking 75 years since the iconic Italian delicatessen opened in Soho, Lina Stores comes to King’s Cross this month. The deli, housed within a Victorian transit shed behind Granary Square, will feature floor to ceiling shelves stocked with the very best Italian pantry essentials. Salumi, cheeses, antipasti and fresh pasta will also be available to eat in or take away. Customers can stop off to enjoy an espresso and a freshly made-to-order sandwich, or pause for an after-work aperitivo. Chef patron at Julie’s Restaurant & Champagne Bar When I was a child… I had many grand ideas about what I wanted to be, from a rally car driver to an architect. Ultimately it was always going to be something involving working with my hands. The first thing I cooked was… coleslaw. It was actually a close call to losing my fingernail grating the carrot!

My kitchen heroes are… Thomas Keller, Michel Bras, Stephen Harris and Phil Howard. Each of them has a distinctive style that is most definitely their own, but ultimately it is classic cookery. My failsafe dinner party dish… is Cornish fish stew with saffron, fennel and sea vegetables. It takes an incredibly long time to prepare the base, which is what gives it an extremely complex flavour. However, once it is prepared in advance, it’s very easy to serve for a large group of guests.

INGREDIENTS For the pasta dough 300g plain white flour | 3 eggs | Pinch of salt | 1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil For the filling and sauce 250g Burrata, finely chopped | 500g Datterini tomatoes (or cherry tomatoes) | 100ml extra virgin olive oil | 1tbsp plain flour | Salt, to taste | 10 fresh basil leaves | Freshly grated Parmesan | A handful of toasted pine nuts

METHOD 1. To make the pasta dough, place the flour on a board or in a bowl. Make a well in the centre and crack the eggs into it. Beat the eggs with a fork until smooth. Add the salt and the oil, then, using the tips of your fingers, mix with the flour, incorporating a little at a time, until everything is combined. Wrap in cling film and let the dough sit in a cool, dry space for half an hour before using. 2. Roll out the dough to approximately 0.7mm thick and cut it into equal squares of about 10cm. Fill each square with 25g

of fresh Burrata (about two tablespoons), and close the square by folding it in half into a triangle. Press the ends together so they stay closed. Set aside. 3. For the sauce, quickly blend the tomatoes for a few seconds into rough pieces. Put through a strainer to separate the juice from the solids. Add 100ml of olive oil and one tablespoon of plain flour to a pan and sweat down with no colouration. Add the juice from the Datterini tomatoes to the pan and let this cook until it thickens. Take the sauce from the heat and allow to cool. Add the raw, solid tomato pieces from the strainer and mix into the sauce, add salt to taste and the chopped basil leaves. Mix. 4. Boil pasta in salted water for around two minutes. Drain and place in the pan with the sauce. Mix slowly and top with Parmesan. Divide the pasta squares equally between four people and garnish with toasted pine nuts. Serve and enjoy! The new deli will be at 20 Stable Street, N1C (linastores.co.uk)

My last meal on earth would have to be… at Le Pré Catelan in Paris. Exquisite French gastronomy in classy and elegant surrounding. When I feel down, I cook… roast chicken velouté with sour cream and toasted rye bread. A number of years ago my wife and I had suffered really bad flu over Christmas. As we were recovering, I made a very memorable batch of this, heavily laced with aged sherry. It certainly put us back on track! My favourite London restaurant is… The Clove Club. The food there is original and utterly outstanding. THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS OF LUXURY Experience one of Africa's most fascinating cities in unmatched style: for the most discerning of travellers, only a stay at the Royal Mansour will do by Katie Hutley

T

o call a place one of contrasts has surely become one of the most clichéd phrases imaginable – as if anywhere one-dimensional would be remotely worth visiting – but when it comes to Morocco, and Marrakech in particular, surely to fail to mention it would be something of an omission. Especially when staying at the Royal Mansour, one of the world’s leading luxury accommodations; the five-star treatment starts before you’ve even left the airport, when you’re whisked discreetly through a VIP lane, as others from your flight mill about filling out visas, joining queues and generally just not being guests of the Royal Mansour. Once through, one of the hotel’s fleet of – naturellement – Bentleys awaits, and the journey through the looking glass of luxury is truly complete. I had made the conscious decision that this trip wouldn’t be of the adventurous variety; it was to serve as respite from the stresses of a hellish house move and the endless travails of being a working parent, not to mention the fact that, as a solo traveller, I was somewhat wary of the city’s reputation for bewildering (and

sometimes more) its – female, in particular – visitors. And so it suited me that the hotel that was more akin to a village in its own right, a walled enclave nestled at the eastern side of the Medina – just a ten-minute walk to the centre of the action at Jemaa el-Fnaa square should I choose it, but equally, should I not, where my every whim could be catered for. In fact, that’s an understatement: while I am not immune to a whim and its charms, the Royal Mansour outpaced me by some stretch. The writing paper, with my name beautifully etched in gilt at the head of the page, that awaited at “my” bureau was a touch that would make an A-Lister blush. Having mentioned to the concierge that evenings spent on my (private, rooftop) terrace had been a little chillier than I had packed for, imagine my delight when, the following night, a fire had been discreetly lit in anticipation of my needing it. It’s easy to see how hard it would be to keep your feet on the ground if this was the life you’d become accustomed to – I arrived a simple London girl, and left having very nearly gone full Streisand. Instantly at home in my new palatial digs, the days took on a rhythm of their own; a sumptuous breakfast was followed by reading by the outdoor pool in the glorious sunshine; lunch at La Table or Le Jardin (two of the three on-site restaurants) would be followed by a nap (had there been wine) or a treatment at the jaw-droppingly beautiful spa (had there not) in the afternoon. A dinner at the fine dining gem La Grande Table Marocaine, run by three Michelin-starred chef Yannick Alléno, was a one-off treat – the food was out of this world and, unlike most restaurants of its class, the portions were not meagre, defeating even this hungry diner – so most nights were spent dining al fresco on my aforementioned terrace, a midnight dip in my private plunge pool rounding off another day in paradise. All this meant it was only too easy to forget that I was in one of the most vibrant, fascinating and culturally-diverse cities in Africa, so in spite of my self-prescribed confinement, I did venture out – and what a treat when I did. An afternoon at the stunning Jardin Majorelle was simultaneously a

kaleidoscope of colour and an oasis of calm. But the high point was meeting the most well-connected man in all Marrakech, kindly appointed by the hotel as my tour-slashhistory-slash-shopping guide for a trip into the old town. His name was Mr Ben (and yes, I tried to describe to him the much-loved children’s TV show of the 70s, and no, that conversation didn’t go brilliantly), and it was a wholly fascinating experience; I learned about the melting pot of cultures and religions living side by side under one of the most liberal and welcoming monarchies in the region; I visited an apothecary and learned about the traditional uses of various exotic herbs, spices and traditional medicines; I ate an enormous pigeon pastilla the size of my head for lunch, and I dream of it still. I think some of the vendors we visited may have been a little disappointed to realise that my budget didn’t necessarily match that of Mr Ben’s previous guests (John Legend and Chrissy Teigen were, thrillingly, my predecessors), but they were too polite to show it. And yes, it was noisy, chaotic, hectic, filled with sights and smells that, combined, created the assault on the senses that I’d been warned about. But under Mr Ben’s wing I felt safe at all times, giving me the perfect opportunity to experience that famous contrast without being overwhelmed by it. I truly can’t recall another five-star experience where I was made to feel so instantly at home, or greeted by smiles of such sincerity I felt like an old friend returning. As the Bentley whisked me back to airport, and to real life, I blessed my lucky stars (all five of them) and treasured the memories that will last me a lifetime.

Maximalism is the word on everyone’s lips this autumn/winter. Where bathing spaces are conventionally clean-lined and sanitary, bathroom designers want in on this richlytextured trend, too. And who could blame them? Vibrant colour clashes and mismatching patterns make for a thrillingly rebellious direction in interior design. O

rnamenting her Little Venice property came naturally for Isabella – a woman who knows a thing or two about accessorising. The raised ground floor apartment is expertly finished with the prettiest house jewels, from the amber vases that echo the gold frames of the contemporary artworks, to the collection of crystals that offer eye-catching pastel coloured pops in the bathroom. “I have definitely fallen for the crystal craze!” She says. “Candles are a must, too. I have a lot scattered around the flat. And I always have fresh flowers and house plants. They bring the space to life and I find caring for them to be therapeutic.” For the jewellery designer, the smallest accessories can have the biggest impact, and it’s entirely evident that here, every object, and every placement, has been thoroughly thought through – right down to the matching pencils and notepads on the bedside tables. The period flat is an elegant affair with a modern luxury aesthetic that puts comfort at the fore. A sprawling dusky pink corner sofa from George Smith is adorned with

scatter cushions in the double figures, while a large antique buttoned ottoman, upholstered in pale grey, proudly takes centre stage. But none of this would be possible without the apartment’s glorious Victorian scale: huge sash windows are met with grand panelled walls and cornicing. “The flat holds very high ceilings which have a plaster coving design lifted straight from the temples of ancient Rome,” enthuses Isabella. “I definitely consider myself a bit of an old soul, so to have a sense of history in my home is a lovely thing.” Cosy textures and gentle shades are themes that run throughout the property: Isabella’s bedroom is finished with tactile touches of velvet in the lampshades and the soft cream headboard. Soft grey carpets are suitably plush underfoot while heavy satin curtains offer a lustrous sheen. But there’s high fashion drama, too: the black and white diamond patterned tiles in the bathroom, and the contemporary black marble dining table, cleverly offset the pretty. “I used mostly pale pinks and whites for the living room,” Isabella explains, “and then as you head into the dining area, it becomes much darker, with the dining room

table held up by a very modern stand, giving the table top all the attention it needs!” Isabella could wax lyrical about her favourite interiors brands. Aside from George Smith (she also owns a sumptuous pink armchair from the esteemed furniture makers), she lists OKA as a go-to: “It’s somewhere I’ve found myself returning to quite often, mainly for their fake flowers, which are divine!” And Fornasetti: “I’ve been collecting their wall plates for a while and hope to have enough to hang them all up soon. I also have a coffee table with the

interpretation of Lina Cavalieri’s face surrounded by pastel hydrangeas,” she says. “Fornasetti’s pieces always feel like works of art in the home.” The apartment is largely open-plan, awarding it a light and spacious feel. But with Isabella’s choice of furnishings, and with clever zoning, it is also utterly homely. “I recently bought a House of Hackney floor lamp paired with a printed fringed shade,” she says. “I feel like it creates a space, especially in the evening. You can be on the sofa and be in your own space, regardless of others being in it.” But as far as Isabella’s favourite room goes, her luxurious walk-in wardrobe, which offers so much more than a conventional dressing room, wins hands down. “There’s a window looking out into the gardens below and I find it very peaceful in there. It’s where I put outfits together, style jewellery with clothes, and do most of my photography using different fabrics with the jewellery. Having such an open space to put everything on display allows me to really visualise and be the most creative I can be!” isabellatownsley.com

MUSIC TO LITTLE EARS At Hampstead’s Lyndhurst House, musical education is at the heart of school life

How long have you been head? Since 1994 – so this is my 25th year! How would you sum up the school in a sentence? Be honest about what you can do in the time you have available. Being chair of the board of

governors is great but it’s really hard work. And if something goes wrong, parents will want to know why. 2. Don’t be afraid to tell the school what you do. You might feel your job isn’t important enough, but children will still want to hear about it. 3. Play to your strengths and interests. If you’re a bookworm, for example, you could offer to read to the children in nursery. 4. Listen to your own children and step back if they say you’re embarrassing them. It’s their school, not yours. 5. Leave your ego at the door. It’s not a competition – it’s about making the school as good as it can be.

PUPIL POWER A personal desire to learn is vital in building competence and confidence. One London headteacher tells us how to recognise which schools do it well

I

f you want a lesson in how to learn, look no further than toddlers, says Alison Melrose, head of Prince’s Gardens Preparatory School, which opens in Kensington in September 2020. “Toddlers can become sudden experts in dinosaurs, able to identify, name and tell you all about every type,” she says. “They can do this because they have a personal desire to learn, which, as teachers and parents, we need to cultivate.” This desire to learn, along with the ability to reflect and extend learning, is at the heart of “pupil agency”. A personalised approach, it sees children learn through activities that are meaningful to them and driven by their own interests. “Giving children a choice in how they learn helps them build the confidence and competence to be lifelong learners,” says Alison. “They also develop the transferable skills they’ll need for the future: flexibility, tenacity, creativity, communication and collaboration.” Pupil agency is well supported in the state sector through self-organised-learning environments (SOLE). It’s also an integral part of the curriculum in International

Baccalaureate. But recognising which schools do it well can be tricky. “It must be a wholeschool approach,” says Alison. “Schools may have specific spaces to support personalised learning (we’ll have a maker space and digitally connected classrooms, for example). But that doesn’t mean they’ve considered what pupil agency looks like at every age stage.” If you’re interested in knowing how well a school does this, Alison suggests asking the following questions: • How do you cater for different learning styles? • What opportunities are there for independent learning? • How do you provide for children to choose how they learn? • Is digital technology discreet or incorporated? • What’s your whole school approach to learning? Hampstead Garden Suburb

Originally founded by philanthropist Dame Henrietta Barnett as a way to save part of the Heath from development, the Suburb – as it’s known to locals – was created as a model community, filled with people of all incomes and classes, and dotted with luscious gardens. The charming layout is widely recognised as one of the best examples of twentieth century town planning, with its mix of gently curving roads and little closes designed by architect Raymond Unwin. Today, the area remains as beautiful as ever, and is managed by a trust which aims to preserve its many charms. Very much a London village, a selection of local shops can be found on Market Place, with plenty more on offer close by in Temple Fortune and Golders Green

Did you know? In 1909 Henrietta Barnett commissioned Edwin Lutyens to build two churches on Central Square. One C of E, to be named St Jude’s after her husband’s church in the East End, the other a Free Church providing a shared spiritual home for other denominations. The architect, inspired by Sir Christopher Wren, proposed two monumental designs, one with an immense spire, the other domed, but Henrietta wanted something more homely. “Mrs Barnett was awfully upset about it,” Lutyens is quoted as saying. “I want a certain height of building in a certain place for general effect. Mrs B. dead against this certain height on the ground of other houses being overshadowed.” Lutyens eventually got his way, and the towering spire of St Jude’s is now a treasured local sight, visible from all parts of the Suburb.

For more serious shopping, it’s off to Temple Fortune, where I’ll take a break at Balady for the best falafel and homemade chips (even Giles Coren agrees). Afternoons might see us pop to our tiny, volunteer-run Hampstead Garden Suburb Community Library, where there’s a neighbourly book club and lots of children’s activities. If it’s a special occasion, we cannot celebrate without a sourdough cake from Margot Bakery: buy a loaf of tahini and halva babka and it’s a struggle not to inhale the whole thing before we get home. On a warm evening, my husband and I might take on the half-hour stroll (alongside the mansions of The Bishops Avenue or Winnington Road) to get to Hampstead High Street. And our reward at the end is always the same: a banana and chocolate crêpe to share, from La Crêperie De Hampstead.
