I’d never have admitted it at the time, but I used to love going back to school in September. The shiny new shoes, the beautiful promise of an unused notepad, the opportunity to catch up with friends after a long summer apart… I’m feeling butterflies just thinking about it now.

With the scent of autumn in the air first thing in the morning and the need to start thinking about dressing for chillier days, it’s a great time to consider fresh starts (in my opinion the dark and dreary days of January are no time for that sort of thing). Packed with new ideas, trends and things to do, this issue celebrates that sentiment, starting with our edit of new season office style – because you don’t have to be in the classroom to appreciate the thrill of new things! I’m off to cross ‘ed’s letter’ off the to-do list in my pristine pad. See you next month…

Putting it out there For Elarica Johnson, success has a lot to do with the power of positive thinking, coupled with a big dose of patience.

We caught up to discover the lowdown on her latest role Words Liz Skone James

larica Johnson is keen to assure me that her hair does not define her. “I love my hair, but I am not my hair,” she explains.

Whether or not that is true, as well as contributing to her striking model looks, her tightly curled do, a legacy of her half Jamaican and half Irish heritage, makes her instantly recognisable.

No bad thing for a performer.

You’ll probably know her best from her role as ill-fated supermodel Lula Landry in the first series of crime drama Strike, adapted from J.K. Rowling’s Cormoran Strike novels (written under the pseudonym Robert Galbraith). She obviously has some sort of affinity with the Scottish author, because her big screen break came back in 2009 when she took a small part in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.

Strike was, she says, a great job, and one she was excited to accept, despite ‘murdered supermodel’ not being one of her top five dream roles. There is an actual list, a fact she reveals early on in our chat – and then becomes a little flustered when I ask her what exactly is on it. “OK, so I have a prostitute, a strong mother, a drug addict, a superhero and a vampire,” she admits, shyly, adding, “I think that all of those roles would challenge me in some way.”

In fact, she has just ticked vampire off the list. This month sees her appearing as vampire Juliette Durand in Sky One’s A Discovery of Witches. The series follows a historian and reluctant witch (played by Teresa Palmer) whose life is changed when she discovers a magical manuscript and a vampire professor (played by Matthew Goode) in Oxford’s Bodleian Library, and is based on the novel of the same fabricmagazine.co.uk

name by Deborah Harkness (from her All Souls trilogy). If supernatural stories aren’t usually your bag, don’t stop reading just yet – I’m told this particular show promises wider appeal. Elarica describes the drama as “a love story with a lot of gore”, telling me that there is “biting and fighting and violence of sorts”. It is though, at its heart, a love story. “The relationship between the two lead characters is really beautiful to follow – it is just set in a supernatural world really,” she surmises.

When asked how she thinks the series will be received, Elarica says, “I am putting it out into the universe that it will do very well. I feel like we already have a positive energy around the show because of the books.” She goes on to explain that she believes strongly in the power of affirmations and positive thought. “I just started doing it a couple of years ago: if I say that something is going to happen, it might not actually happen, but something semi close to it does tend to happen,” she grins.

Interestingly, positivity doesn’t seem to come naturally to her. When I ask what she considers to be her biggest achievement, she struggles to answer. “It takes a lot for me to look at something and admit that I have done really well,” she explains. “I think the biggest achievement is me continuing to stay focused, and pushing.” Indeed, she attributes any success to date to this focus: “Every day, there is something that I do that helps me with learning my craft. Whether that is reading scripts, auditioning… even watching and learning from other actors, then that is all me working on what I do. I always think that if you put the work in, you get it out.”

Elarica cannot imagine a world where she is not acting: “I was a child who knew,” she shrugs. “At, like, six or seven I watched Annie at the theatre and I just knew from that moment that I wanted to act.” She describes the thrill of being in the theatre, and how she longed to be a part of it.

“To play a character, and have these people in front of me and to make them believe that I was that person… that was a challenge that appealed,” she explains. She went on to attend The BRIT School, and briefly considered singing as a career path, but her ambitions were short-lived: “I was

there at the same time as Adele and Jessie J, and I thought, OK, I am never going to be a singer now…” she laughs.

Having made the decision to focus on acting, she took her debut roles on the stage. “I remember the first time doing a show. I enjoyed it so, so much, and it felt like nothing I had ever done before,” she grins. “That is where I trained, and where I began, and I felt very at home in a theatre. But I recall making a decision with my agent, where I was like, OK, are we going to push for stage or screen, or focus on both. And we decided to focus on the one, which was screen, and then to maybe come back to theatre afterwards.”

It has, by all accounts, been a good decision. Recent parts include a role playing alongside Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford in the much-anticipated Blade Runner 2049 and a part in How to Talk to Girls at Parties with Elle Fanning, Nicole Kidman and Ruth Wilson, which premiered to critical acclaim at Cannes 2017 and was nominated for the Queer Palm. And there is more in the pipeline, notably an appearance in a film called Six Days of Sistine, which she describes as “quite arthouse in vibe”. Going on to explain that: “It doesn’t have much dialogue in it, and involves a lot of poetry, which was really quite fun to shoot. We had two weeks of shooting – a lot of patience was required, because there were a lot of still moments.”

Patience (“with myself, with the world, with the industry”) is, she says, one of the most important things she has learnt through work. And it hasn’t been easy, because she is the first to admit that she finds it hard to keep still, describing herself as a “wriggly” person. “It is difficult, because this is a job where you have to perform to get where you would like, but you have to wait for the jobs to come along. Or you have to write the scripts, or whatever it is. There is a lot of waiting for things to happen,” she sighs. Even when she is working, she finds it hard not to be thinking about and plotting the next step: “I will get a job and be so happy on it, and when it is coming to an end, I will get this little tickle in my tummy, thinking, what’s next?” she laughs.

Right now she is putting that patience into practice, reading scripts, going out to audition for parts and generally

putting it out there in the universe that: “Something big and shiny that really pushes me is on the horizon.” And as proud as she is of her achievements, she is definitely hungry for bigger and better things: “I could definitely do a lot more in my career,” she tells me. “And I’m hoping that it really picks up at some point, to the extent that I can pick and choose what I really want to do and who I really want to play.”

What if it doesn’t? “I’ll just have loads of kids, and adopt and foster, and just be a big mumma,” she laughs. Joking aside, family is very important to Elarica, and she admits that having to travel for work means she misses out on a lot.

So however frustrating downtime might be, it does give her the opportunity to revel in just: “Being with the people that I love in that good space.”

For Elarica, that good space is London, the place where she was born. She waxes lyrical about her hometown, telling me: “The vibe and the energy of London, you can’t get that anywhere else. And I will stick by that, and if they don’t believe me, whoever is reading this, they need to get in contact and I will show them around and they will see how wonderful it is.” Now there’s an invitation…

Chop-Chop I love that you only need to check in for Eurostar half an hour before departure, yet I always seem to find myself with time to kill in the departure lounge (the need to allow plenty of contingency time when travelling was drilled into me by the least laid back of parents). So it is with great excitement that, having passed through security, I discover Chop-Chop’s latest pop-up. Offering 20-minute appointments at £20 a pop, since it launched in Old Street earlier this year Chop-Chop has gained a reputation for luxury on-the-go hair styling and cutting.

I grab a coffee and a magazine then stick my head into the salon pod to enquire about walk in availability. I’m in luck, and seconds later I’m settling into the chair in preparation for my transformation. I’ve never been brave enough to try a dry cut before, though I’ve often thought that as a method it makes much more sense, after all, how can a stylist see exactly what your hair is like wet? And reviews of Chop-Chop’s service have been unanimously good, so I don’t have to think twice about giving it a go (I’ve been struggling to find time for a salon appointment for weeks and I’m keen to look good for an appointment in Paris later that evening).

My stylist is chatty and interesting, and in the blink of an eye the cut is finished. It’s quiet so she offers to curl my poker straight do for free. This really is shaping up to be a good day. The Garuda Pilates Studio They say you’re either a Pilates or a yoga person, but at Garuda’s north London studio, you can be the best of both.

Walking through the studio’s leafy front garden, I feel like I’ve stumbled across a hidden gem.

The spacious yet comfortable studio offers classes and personal training in Pilates, yoga and their namesake method, Garuda, a blend of the two disciplines. It combines yoga’s spirituality, controlled breathing (pranayama) and sitting postures, with the core strength and focus of Pilates.

In a one-to-one session, my teacher Juliana explains that where normal Pilates is linear, this hybrid method encourages twisting and flowing.

You can choose between mat-based classes held in the airy studio space (complete with original stained-glass windows) or classes using the Garuda

apparatus. I opt for trying out this trademarked apparatus, which builds on traditional Pilates equipment like the reformer. It’s much bigger, but don’t let the sheer size of it intimidate you.

Although this is my first session, with the guiding hands of Juliana, I soon discover how versatile it can be.

A personal training session is the best way to get started, and even recovering from an injury, I can feel the benefits as Juliana adapts the exercises to suit my body.

Whether you’re a yoga or Pilates regular, or simply want to try something a bit different, Garuda’s creative sequences and seamless movements may well be the exercise you’ve been looking for. We think we’ve found the answer to stray greys, and no, it’s not six-weekly dye jobs. Celebrity hairdresser Patrick Alès launched PHYTO, a natural, botanical haircare brand back in the 1960s after noticing that chemicallyladen products were taking a serious toll on his clients’ hair. In the intervening years the brand has become a cult favourite, with customers fawning over products like the PHYTO 7 day cream for hair. And now a new hero has been born: PHYTO RE30 bills itself as the first anti-grey hair treatment. It’s claimed that revolutionary technology (that was six years in the making) is able to boost melanin synthesis while protecting from future depigmentation. Sounds too good to be true, but we’ve been road testing it for three weeks and swear that the greys are somehow diminishing.

Parental responsibilities mean that we don’t get out much these days, at least not together. And when we do, we generally don’t venture into the West End, so I’m at a bit of a loss to know where to take hubby for pre-birthday dinner drinks. We wander around aimlessly, feeling uninspired, and then an unexpected downpour drenches us, so we call time on the drinks mission and head straight for the restaurant. Goodness knows why we didn’t think of that in the first place…

Cora Pearl has been open for just a week when we visit, but anticipation has been building for months (it’s from the team behind the diminutive Kitty Fisher’s, which opened in Shepherds Market in late 2014 and quickly garnered a following of foodies and a well-earned reputation for being oh so cool). Just like Kitty Fisher’s, Cora Pearl is named after one of Europe’s most famous courtesans, and its sumptuous interiors – parquet floors, dark textiles, tarnished mirrors and vintage lights – are inspired by her demi-monde lifestyle.

The kitchen is headed up by Kitty’s head chef George Barson, who is now overseeing both restaurants, so we know we’re in safe hands. I’ve been told by those in the know that we can’t not try the chips, and I always obey instructions (though I can’t help thinking that those on my neighbours’ table look underwhelming). We start, though, with a serving of bread with yeasted butter (curious but definitely delicious) and a cocktail apiece while we peruse the menu. Both bode well for what is to come.

Each dish is beautifully presented, with perfectly balanced flavours. For me, an opening act of tomatoes with creamy goat’s curd is followed by fish stew with croutons (although cheese on toast would be a better moniker for the crispy toasts topped with mounds of cheese – I’m in heaven); while hubby tucks into the king of all cheese and ham toasties, and then a gorgeous pork dish. And the chips, oh my… Chunky but crispy all the way through, they are the holy grail of fries. I’ve been dreaming of them ever since. It would be hard for dessert to compete, but it makes a valiant effort – we share a coffee and cardamom sponge with milk sorbet and lick the plate clean. Cora promised to delight and she delivered – we feel smug at being among the first to sample her wares, and will be back.

West Hampstead already has more than its fair share of cool drinking dens – think The Alice House, The Gallery and Bobby Fitzpatrick – so it feels almost greedy for it to be laying claim to another. We’re not complaining though… Described by owners Will Partridge (Kilburn Ironworks) and Chris Dennis (Sovereign Loss, Disrepute) as a neighbourhood bar with a real focus on drinks, Heads + Tails will launch later this month on the former site of nightclub Lately. We’re told that the ground floor bar (Heads)

will be bright and airy, with a beautiful garden, matched by a menu of refreshing cocktails, lighter and low-alcohol drinks and an extensive wine and beer list. In contrast, the basement bar (Tails) promises to be a low-lit, atmospheric space filled with warm wood and rich colour, and a menu focusing on a heady mix of bourbon, whisky and rum based cocktails – perfect for continuing the night into the wee hours.

When I was a child I wanted to be… a scientist, insect expert, robot operator and a poet – I lacked focus!

The first thing I cooked was… dashi broth and fried seafood dumplings, aged 10. I was home alone with my younger cousin. I made the broth from just a memory of taste. Later my mum tried it and she said it was really good (I still think she just said that to make me feel better).

My fail safe dinner party menu is… a selection of nibbles laid out on the table to start, to be enjoyed with drinks. Afterwards, a big fat rib eye on the bone (it’s really easy to roast: as soon as your guests arrive put it in the oven for 10 minutes at 200°C, reduce to 160°C for the next 15 mins, then turn down to 80°C and leave until ready to serve). Serve it simply with fried mushrooms and spinach.

To make a quick sauce, add some ketchup, mustard and Worcestershire sauce into dripping oils, along with juice from the meat. It’s such an easy meal, you can enjoy a drink and a chat with guests without needing to spend hours in the kitchen.

My last meal on earth would be… an omakase tasting menu of sushi and sashimi.

Simply translated, it means: “Chef, I’m in your hands”.

My favourite London restaurant is… Cafe East at Surrey Quays, it’s the best Vietnamese I’ve found here.

Until the end of this month, Joo Won is offering a special Korean inspired tasting menu, which runs alongside the restaurant’s normal offering.

Bengali brilliance September might not bring an Indian summer (and frankly, after July and August’s searing temperatures, we’re ready for a little autumnal chill) but it does promise authentic Indian flavour, with the much-anticipated opening of Little Kolkata in Covent Garden. After moving to Britain in 2006, Prabir Chattopadhyay found himself longing for a taste of home and started using his favourite traditional spices and ingredients to create Bengali-style feasts for friends. After teaming up with business partner Biswajit Deb Das, dinner parties became sell-out supper clubs, and now, a permanent restaurant on Shelton Street – further proof that there’s never been a more exciting time for foodies in Covent Garden. As a nod to Prabir’s upbringing in Kolkata and Biswajit’s ancestral roots in Bangladesh, the menu encompasses a range of Calcuttan and Bengali specialities including macher cutlet (cod served with a typical Calcuttan mustard sauce), as well as the rather special chicken liver with Bengali spices,

served with truffle paratha. The sweet toothed are catered for with a decadent dessert menu – the cardamom coffee brownie with rose ice cream is inspired by the famous Kolkata patisserie, Flurys. And a signature cocktail list pays homage to Indian cookery with the likes of Saffron Spritz. It’s guaranteed to beat your average tikka masala takeaway.

Inspired by her Japanese roots, London blogger and food photographer Sara Kiyo Popowa started making her husband healthy bento to rescue him from sad office sandwiches, sharing her creations on Instagram. She soon amassed a following and Shiso Delicious was born. This month sees the launch of her first book, Bento Power: Brilliantly Balanced Lunchbox Recipes (20 September, £18.99, Kyle Books). We asked Sara to share a favourite recipe from the book: “I ate soo many instant noodle meals as a university student – back then I had no idea I could make my own, wholesome version in minutes!” she says. “Thin dry rice vermicelli rehydrates quickly in hot water, so just place them dry in a heatproof container, add a delicious miso paste and ginger soup base, plus raw veggies (you can use any veggie as long as it’s sliced thin or grated). When you’re ready to eat, it’s just like the original – pour boiling hot water over, wait a few minutes, then slurp down your warm instant noodle soup.”

Ingredients

1/2 nest (50–75g) dry rice vermicelli a handful of salad greens, like rocket, watercress or baby spinach 1/2 small carrot, grated a small piece of red cabbage, cut into thin slices 1 tbsp brown rice miso paste 1 tbsp toasted sesame oil 1 tbsp tamari 2cm piece fresh ginger, washed but not peeled, finely grated straight into your bento fresh chilli, sliced, or chilli flakes, to taste fresh coriander, to taste, optional a slice of lime, to serve, optional

Method

Use a leak-proof box, or a repurposed jar with a lid for this bento. Break a whole, dry nest of noodles in half (over your sink, as pieces will fly everywhere!), then jam one half into your container together with the rest of the ingredients. No need to arrange neatly for this bento! Close tightly and pack your container in a bento bag or furoshiki with a fork or chopsticks.

To serve, remove the lime slice, if using, pour boiling water over to submerge the ingredients, close the lid, leave for 5 minutes or a little more, then open, squeeze the lime over and eat.

Tip Meal prep a few Busy Days Instant Noodle Bentos and keep ready to go in the fridge. Less perishable veggies like carrot, cabbage and broccoli are best used for this, salad greens and herbs can be added on the day. Cubed firm tofu or cooked beans are both great added to your bento as a protein boost.

MY WILL… MY WAY! Are you putting off making or updating your will? Suzanna Baker, Solicitor at Osbornes Law gives you six reasons why you should make a will to protect your loved ones in the future Reason One. “My spouse/civil partner will get everything anyway, right?”

Wrong. If you are married (and have children), your spouse will only be entitled to the first £250,000 of your estate, your personal possessions (your car, jewellery etc.) and half of the remainder of your estate. So if you want to ensure your spouse is adequately provided for (i.e. leave all of your estate to them) you must state this in your will.

Reason Two. Soon to be ex-spouse or civil partner You may be separated, but not yet divorced from your spouse. In this scenario (unless you have a judicial separation), your spouse would still benefit from your estate. Therefore, if this is not your wish, it is essential to formally record this by making a will.

Reason Three. I’ve lived with my partner for years That may be the case, but if you do not make a valid will, your estate will pass to your descendants in a strict order determined by the rules of intestacy. This may not be appropriate or what you would want to happen within your

family set-up, especially as these rules do not include a cohabitant or long-term partner.

The initial order of those entitled to your estate will be your spouse or civil partner, children, parents, followed by your whole blood brothers and sisters, their descendants, and then your half brothers and sisters, and their descendants.

Reason Four. The kids are alright You can appoint guardians for your young children in your will. This way, you get to choose who would look after them if the worst was to happen to you and your partner.

Reason Five. Whiskers and tails If you are an animal lover, you can express a wish in your will about who you would like to look after your beloved pets.

Reason Six. Peace of mind Leaving your affairs in a mess for your loved ones to deal with creates an added stress at an already difficult time. A will enables you to appoint responsible, trustworthy adults to be your executors so that they can deal with your assets on your death by simply following your wishes and instructions.

A

fter a nine-hour flight sitting next to a lively 12-year-old, I’m desperate to get to our hotel. We’ve booked a few nights at The Westin Bayshore and it is a mercifully short cab ride from the airport. Located in Coal Harbour marina, close to Stanley Park and within walking distance from most of the major sights, we couldn’t ask for a better base, and after a long day of planes, trains and automobiles, the gorgeous views of water and greenery are very welcome indeed.

We sit awhile watching the coastal traffic and seaplanes – a curiously mesmerising experience – and the comings and goings of the neighbourhood. A jogging track runs alongside the hotel: I’m not even vaguely tempted, but it is clearly well used.

The good folk of Vancouver are obviously healthier than me – further evidenced in the hotel’s well-equipped gym and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. There’s also a regular programme of activities including the somewhat barmy-sounding Liquid Yoga.

The foodie offerings are more to our taste. Amazing breakfasts are served daily in the H2 Rotisserie & Bar, overlooking the pool. On the menu are omelettes, fruit platters, smoked salmon bagels and more bacon and maple syrup than even my ravenous pre-teen can eat (though he makes a valiant effort), all served by incredibly friendly and knowledgeable staff, who offer us tips on what to do with our time in Vancouver.

Following their advice, we start with a stroll through Stanley Park and a visit to the Vancouver Aquarium, before hailing a cab and making for Granville Island (granvilleisland.com). Once an industrial wasteland, the area is now an artistic and cultural hub, bustling with quirky independent shops and galleries. A huge public market is open here daily, with hundreds of stalls selling local produce, gourmet goodies and fresh seafood. All of which piques our appetite for dinner: we’ve been told that Forkhill House (forkhillhouse.com), which opened relatively recently, is not to be missed. An upmarket Irish bistro located close to the hotel, it has a reputation for serving hearty, wholesome food. It is all familiarly comforting, with top marks going to a sausage dish served with baked duchess potatoes, entitled Bang the Duchess! The name reflects the atmosphere here – the friendly Irish service makes for one of our best meals in Vancouver.

It won’t come as a surprise to hear that the best way to get around this part of

Captivated

by Canada With its Rocky Mountains, Pacific coastline and endless forests, rivers and lakes, they say that wilderness is only a heartbeat away in British Columbia. But with just a few days to fill, why not make your focus more metropolitan, in the beautiful waterside cities of Vancouver and Victoria WOR DS BECKY POMFRET

Canada is on the water, and after a couple of nights at The Westin, we hop on a ferry to Victoria, on Vancouver Island, choosing a relatively new route with V2V Vacations. You know the old adage about the journey being as important as the destination? We are genuinely disappointed when this one ends: super comfy seats, a full bar and restaurant menu and a witty and informative Captain’s commentary make for a memorable trip.

Apparently dolphins, whales and seals are often spotted along the route; we aren’t lucky enough to spot any but we have a lot of fun looking out for them on the windswept top deck, before returning to our seats to enjoy some excellent local wine.

Victoria is such a picturesque town that I find myself going a little Instagram crazy, snapping anything and everything in sight (sorry, not sorry). We are staying at the Magnolia Hotel & Spa, an award-winning boutique property tucked away on a quiet side street. The peaceful outside terrace is a beautiful setting for a restorative drink (try the refreshingly aromatic mint and ginger iced tea) before more exploring.

We end up at local fish and chippie Red Fish Blue Fish (redfish-bluefish.com). Situated in an upcycled cargo container on the dock, it has quite the reputation and the queue is immense. It is well worth the wait though. Just how one small shack can serve such amazing food, to so many, only the ocean knows!

The next morning we walk up to Beacon Hill Park. With the gardens here in full bloom it is breathtakingly beautiful (cue more pics of flowers I will never be able to name).

We continue our wander up to Fisherman’s Wharf, where colourful little houseboats have been turned into quirky restaurants and shops. We treat ourselves to an ice cream before taking a scenic water taxi ride over to the other side of the harbour.

All too soon it is time for our last supper.

We’re after something special, and have been told that with its friendly service and sophisticated environment, 10 Acres (10acres.ca) should deliver. Fresh fish dishes are the house speciality, naturally, all served with seasonal vegetables grown on the restaurant’s own farm, and washed down with wine from Canada’s Okanagan Valley.

It is a fine end to a wonderful trip. Both Vancouver and Victoria have been such a hit with all of us that we will almost certainly be back, next time for longer.

THE ART OF CRAFT AT HEXAGON CLASSIC DESIGN The sensual, sinuous curves of Matthew Chambers’ ceramics take centre stage at the gallery’s latest exhibition Hexagon Classic Design is a destination gallery in north London created by Racheline Michaels. It brings together a

stunning selection of thoughtfully chosen pieces of furniture, tactile ceramics, statement lighting and beautifully designed homeware. This exquisitely curated space, next to her husband’s classic car showroom, reflects the owner’s love of natural materials and her background in interior design.

Racheline has been designing homes for more than 35 years. Her preference is to work with stone, wood, concrete, plaster, chalk, linen and natural fibres. She uses these textures as a canvas to which she adds exquisite furniture and ceramics from her wide range of international artists and suppliers which she shows at the gallery.

Her belief is that classic and contemporary design are complementary and that the synergy between the past and the present allows interiors to grow organically and

uniquely. Racheline likes to give her clients the confidence to add pieces to reflect their taste to an already highly considered space.

Ceramics are Racheline’s great passion, and the latest exhibition at Hexagon Classic Design showcases the work of an impressive talent, Matthew Chambers. Racheline met Chambers at his Masters Degree Show at the Royal College of Art in 2004, where she purchased four pieces of his work. Over the past 14 years, Chambers has gained international recognition and won a number of awards; his work has been acquired by many museums, including the National Museums Scotland and Musée National de Céramique de Sèvres.

Chambers’ sculpture has evolved during the course of his career: simplicity of form has developed over time into something more complex in pattern, where internal layers have multiplied, become tighter and generally enclosed inside each piece. “This

show is about breaking this focus, paring back the pattern and going back to my roots,” explains Chambers. “I’m once again drawing on my base inspiration – a love of Barbara Hepworth’s work and the simple and organic forms that helped trigger my creative process. I find myself exploring the idea of less is more and looking at ways that a certain simplicity in form can create its own special harmony.”

The highly polished finish of many of the works in this exhibition emphasises the sculptures’ sinuous curves and contours and enhances the effects of light and shadow.

And for the first time, each large piece will sit on its own wooden base, giving the work greater presence.

What made you fall in love with the penthouse?

Claire and I love top floor flats because of the views and the feeling that you are above the city. There is a sense of privacy and light tends to be better. This flat overlooks a private square with huge trees, so we recognised its potential. We were excited at the opportunity to create lateral living; anyone who has experienced this finds it hard to go back to living with stairs! Although the existing interior was a mess, we felt with work it could feel very lateral, which is rare in London.

What state was it in when you bought it?

It had been occupied by an older gentleman for over 40 years and was arranged as a four-bedroom flat with corridors. The floor-to-ceiling height was on the low side and it had a column in the middle of the sitting room; the lift shaft terminated on the half-landing below with a flight of stairs up to the front door. We knew what we had to do, but there were some pretty big steps to take in order to get there. fabricmagazine.co.uk

What were the main challenges you faced during the renovation? Was there anything you wished you’d known before?

Our works were ambitious for what, on the surface, seemed to be an interior fit-out. We essentially removed and rebuilt the roof. We extended the concrete lift shaft to the top floor and designed a new lift car. The new lift opening on the top floor had to be at 90 degrees to the openings on the floors below so it required a new, cantilevered lift mechanism. We also had to negotiate the purchase of some of the common parts so the lift door could open directly into the flat on the top floor.

We split the building works into shell works and fit-out works and appointed two contractors for each part. Halfway through, the shell contractor went into administration, so we brought the fit-out contractor into the project much earlier than we were hoping for. We lost about six weeks as a result.

The hardest thing was probably not disturbing the other residents in the block with our works.

We agreed restricted hours for noisy works, but it meant the works took longer.

How did you reconfigure the apartment to make the most of the fabulous views?

The flat has windows on both sides so there were lots of opportunities to use the views. We re-thought the layout to work more optimally with the windows.

In the new layout there are fewer rooms, but they are more generous and each room has more windows.

You’ve described the aesthetic as “Parisian art de vivre” – can you elaborate? How easy was it to channel this in a London interior?

This is not a typical London interior at all: it is unique as it is a lateral space, it has views over rooftops, and it has an elevation full of full-height French windows.

While we were designing it, we quite instinctively started looking at images of Parisian apartments for inspiration. We referred to their proportions and room dimensions to get the layout right.

The challenge remained to make it feel appropriate for London, so we referenced certain Victorian details in the panelling, the skirtings, architraves and doors.

Victorian detailing is austere relative to the more flamboyant Parisian interiors.

What qualities did you look for when you were choosing materials and fittings in the apartment?

Light, proportions and symmetry are elements we really enjoy and look to introduce into our interiors.

We wanted to accentuate a sense of height through the proportions of things; you can see this on the tall pair of mirrors either side of the fireplace and on the proportions of the wall panelling.

Pairs of objects, such as the green club chairs and lights, help reinforce the sense of symmetry. Having said that, in the living room, we wanted to counter the feeling of formality that often comes from symmetry, so we created a second seating area that feels more natural.

As the background architecture was very pale, it was important to introduce strong colours in the fabrics and artwork, and flashes of texture in objects or pieces of furniture. We love natural materials because they look so timeless, and expressed these in the furniture designed by De Rosee Sa. What’s your favourite part of the apartment and why?

I love the proportions of the sitting room with its two seating areas, fireplace and three large windows. And I get a thrill when walking across the black and white marble floor that we designed for the entrance lobby and lift car. It lifts my spirits every time. deroseesa.com

LIGHT-ENHANCING DESIGN Abundant natural light is at the heart of XUL Architecture’s designs for exceptional living, learning and playing spaces Natural light has a positive impact on spatial quality, wellbeing, productivity and creativity – and it’s right at the top of the list of people’s priorities when buying or building their family home. Which is why XUL Architecture has carried out extensive research into ways to bring more lifeenhancing light into building design.

Innovative design The company takes a creative approach to introducing more light into living spaces.

A recent first floor extension project uses mirrors positioned at different angles to reflect light streaming in through a skylight – a configuration that doubles the perceived size of the skylight.

The interesting geometries of the bathroom’s high ceilings (1), with the angles highlighted by a strip of LED, add to the play of light in the extension. The light changes throughout the day in this room, creating beautiful patterns that are complemented by artificial light. A yellow steel beam provides a splash of colour against the neutral tiles, which is then recreated on the bedroom door.

Reflections and patterns In XUL’s Hale Lane project, reflective materials are used in a different way. The two bespoke cone shaped skylights (2) are clad in stainless steel, which not only brings in more light, it also creates wonderful patterns. This innovative project won the 2017 Barnet Architecture Award, with the judges commenting on the use of glass and how “light was very well manipulated”.

Hallways in terraced houses are often dark and narrow. On XUL’s Crittall Hall House project, the architects replaced a solid wall with a Crittall glass partition between the hallway and the living room (3). This stunning design feature provides noise insulation whilst visually connecting the spaces and brightening up what would otherwise be a dark entrance lobby.

I’m friends with the owner, Tony, and they have some great food options if I end up staying until lunch.

“If I’m not working I’ll often take my daughter to the soft play at The Sherriff Centre. The place is quite unusual but I love it – while she plays I can enjoy a coffee, buy some gifts or stationery and post any letters I have to send, all at the same time! If a haircut is also on my to-do list, I usually go to see Gary or Marcus at Esquire.

“I love that Hampstead Heath is just a stone’s throw away. It’s a great spot to walk the dog, have a run or just enjoy a leisurely stroll with an ice cream! Most of the pubs around the Heath have great beer gardens too, so you’re spoilt for choice if you want a nice cold drink in the sunshine. Otherwise, my local of choice (when not in my own bar!) is The Gallery.

Lizzie and all the staff there are really friendly and welcoming, and the drinks are always on-point.

The place has a relaxed-yet-buzzy vibe to it and I usually see quite a few regulars in there.

“Sarracino is one of my favourite dinner spots in the area; they serve delicious pizza and pasta. My girlfriend is Italian and gives the place her seal of approval, so they must be doing something right!”

But everybody knows how difficult it is to find a suitable plot of land… In fact, Right to Build legislation introduced as part of the Housing and Planning Act 2016 requires local authorities in England to ensure that there is enough land available for those who want to build their own home. In the 12 months from October 2016, 15,174 plots were granted nationwide for new buildings, up 28 per cent on the previous year.

How much will it cost?

Good results require a realistic budget: the best designer will help you cost out a fair estimate and together you can work out what percentage of your budget should be put towards a contingency fund. Don’t opt for the cheapest skilled worker at the outset – you could find that they cost you time and extra money in the long run.

Is this the right time?

The rule of thumb is that selfbuilders move every 20 years and everyone else moves out after about seven or eight years.

No one can anticipate what will happen in the housing market that far in advance, but out of the 70 builds we finished on Building the Dream, just one or two owners didn’t create equity through their property.

What are the most important considerations

aside from cost?

Careful pre-planning is never wasted time. As you’re only ever properly qualified for a self-build job after you finish it, don’t hesitate to ask for specialist advice at this stage.

It pays to anticipate all your responsibilities under health and safety: you have to provide a clean, safe place for your tradespeople, which requires knowledge of all the issues around site insurance, access and site security. The more you plan, the less likely you are to be caught off guard. Finally, a classic mistake is to underestimate the time scale of your project. Always maximise the estimation… If you do your research and talk to people who have been in the same situation, you’re already making significant strides towards building your dream.

How did you get into architecture?

I come from a family of engineers, so from a young age I expressed an interest in buildings. Growing up I became interested in history, art, science, maths, geometry, sociology and psychology: I find architecture encompasses all these subjects.

It is also really important to discuss budget from the onset, which will help your team to achieve a good design within your budget.

What advice would you give to someone looking for an architect?

Look at their portfolio and ability to deliver, but also, whether they are able to listen and take on board requests.

After all, it is your home and your investment.

Cutting-edge education Struggling to decide whether a single-sex or a mixed school is best for your child?

You may not have to. The Diamond Model involves educating children together in the younger year groups, then separately in the pre-teen and lower years and together again in the sixth form. And it gets sparkling results: in GCSE data from the Independent Schools Council, 96.4 per cent of girls achieved five A*-C grades in 2016, compared to 89.7 in a co-ed environment. For boys, it was 97.8 per cent compared to 87.6.

Oona Carlin, head of Ipswich High School, puts this success down to offering “the best of both worlds”. “The Diamond Model provides the benefits of a single-sex school with the full social opportunities of a co-ed school,” she says. “It allows us to tailor our teaching to reflect the fact that girls and boys approach their learning in different ways as they reach their teenage years.”

Marcus Cliff Hodges agrees. He’s the warden (overall head) of the Forest School, currently the only London school to offer the model. “The Diamond Model enables us to cater to the specific needs of boys and girls – both educational and pastoral,” he says.

“But life isn’t a single-sex environment. So we encourage boys and girls to spend time together on co-curricular activities, or in the interests of a common goal.”

Q. If I find a house in September, what do I need to do to move in by Christmas?

A. Choose your solicitor wisely. Our recommendation is always to go with a local London-based solicitor who knows the area. Asking an out-of-town solicitor to look at a London lease or local search results could mean an extra few weeks to get the deal done.

Secondly, make sure you’ve got a good mortgage broker.

Going direct with your bank may seem like the best option, but an independent

broker can act fast should you need help speeding things up. Once you have an offer agreed, get onto your broker to help book the survey.

When the survey has been completed they’ll then chase the underwriters to ensure the mortgage offer is issued promptly.
