THE HOUSE IS REPTON’S MASTERPIECE “We are only about sixty in each house, so you make friends easily, up and down. The whole House eats together, so before we tackle the big issues, we deal with the smaller ones, like passing the fruit bowl, cutting the bread, returning the smile…”

September 2021

The definitive guide to London living Editor’s letter Liz Skone James

62

Sophie Cookson appears to be deep in contemplation on our cover this month. In our interview, she revealed that recent global events, coupled with her latest role in Antoine Fuqua film, Infinite, had given her pause for thought: if we could live our lives again, what would we do differently? In the light of the IPCC’s latest report, it’s a pertinent question. Of course, it’s never too late to start making tiny changes that can and do make a difference. Take going organic: choosing foods that are grown organically, or products that are produced with organic materials ensures that we work with nature, not against it. If you fancy making the swap, you’ll find lots of ideas on our Wish List. I’ve also pledged to play my part in Oxfam’s Second Hand September, by employing the services of Thrift+. You can find out more about the pioneering online charity shop in our style section, where you’ll also discover a new swimwear collection made entirely from waste collected in the waters of the Med. Meanwhile, in interiors, we introduce the best of the London Design Festival – don’t miss Planted, a design show championing biophilic, sustainable designs that connect us with nature. Truly inspiring.

Cut Out #13, 2020, Jessica Backhaus (Robert Morat Galerie)

EXHIBITION

Photo London 9-12 September, Somerset House

Back for its sixth edition on the Strand, this much-loved photography fair will this year run concurrently with Photo London Digital, giving us Londoners the opportunity to drop in, whilst bringing the exhibition to a wider global audience online. Highlights include master photographer James Barnor and prolific artist Romuald Hazoumè, shown alongside emerging artists Benji Reid and Alexis Peskine by October Gallery; Robert Morat (Berlin) will present a solo booth of new CUT OUTS by Jessica Backhaus. The images, created using simple tools – sun, scissors and paper – highlight photography’s basic elements: light and shadow, shape and colour. And in an exciting first, the Lee Miller Archives will present the private work of LIFE magazine photographer and editor David E. Scherman. Not to be missed.

Following her recent 60th anniversary production of The Dumb Waiter, director Alice Hamilton returns to Hampstead’s main stage with Shelagh Stephenson’s Olivier award-winning play – last performed here in 1996. Sisters Mary, Catherine and Teresa think they share a common past: a world of disputed bicycles, midnight ice-cream sodas, Mum’s cocktail dresses and perfumed advice – a seaside childhood punctuated by the odd monosyllabic word from Dad. But where does reality end and family myth begin? Full of life, loss and guaranteed laugh-out-loud moments. Eton Avenue, NW3 (020 7722 9301; hampsteadtheatre.com)

EXHIBITION

Kaleidoscope: A Celebration of Colour 9 September-10 October, Drian Gallery

This September sees Westminster City Council install a Green Plaque in honour of British painter Halima Nałęcz, who forged a path through the London art scene in the 1960s and went on to champion new and emerging artists for more than 40 years. The plaque will be unveiled on 7 September at Connaught Village’s 5 Porchester Place – the original site of Nałęcz’s renowned gallery, Drian. To celebrate, a group exhibition featuring Michael Sandle RA, Andrew FlintShipman, Bokani Tshidzu, Christian Furr, Cindy Lass and David Begbie and more will take place at a modern day recreation of the art space, just down the road at number 14. Curated by art critic Robin Dutt, we’re promised “a unique tribute to a woman of insight and dedication, who nurtured so many artists.” 14 Porchester Place, W2

LITERATURE

Queen’s Park Book Festival

18-19 September, Queen’s Park

Returning for its third edition is this lovely literary event, which takes place in the heart of north west London’s verdant 30 acre space. Indeed, home to authors, artists and poets for generations, Queen’s Park is the perfect setting in which to inspire the Capital’s bibliophiles. Expect a unique programme that mixes local talent with household names and the most soughtafter new writers. Festival director Thomas du Plessis says: “Reading and writing are solitary pursuits, but every year when we gather together and share that passion, something magical happens in Queen’s Park. This year, I’m particularly excited for our event with the wonderful Rev Richard Coles; hearing all about local legend Annie Mac’s debut novel; discovering female spies and agents with Ben Macintyre; and meeting the celebrated Turkish novelist Elif Shafak.” Queen’s Park, NW6 (queensparkbookfestival.co.uk)

OPEN HOUSE

The Cosmic House From 24 September, Holland Park

House snoopers, look lively! This month, Charles Jencks’ iconic postmodernist home opens as a dedicated museum and archive space, offering an enriching programme of exhibitions, talks and residences. The late architectural historian and cultural theorist designed The Cosmic House with wife Maggie and architect Terry Farrell back in 1978. It remains one of the world’s most important examples of postmodern architecture and is the UK’s only Grade I listed post-war home. Artistic director Eszter Steierhoffer says: “The Jencks Foundation will become a new cultural hub in London. Its public programme will revolve around thematic seasons inspired by the Jencks Archive. It will foreground the hybrid connections between architecture and other disciplines, and invite artists, designers and researchers to experiment with the postmodern.” 19 Lansdowne Walk, W11 (thecosmichouse.com)

Drawing on Style

15-26 September, Gray M.C.A London As the Capital welcomes Fashion Week, this is a suitably co-ordinating group show for the sartorial set. Celebrating rare and unseen fashion illustrations from post-war 1940s to the present day, Drawing on Style promises a showcase of exquisite drawings by a host of contemporary illustrators. Expect works from David Downton, whose original sketches from Drawing Carmen will be on display. The book was recently published to coincide with the 90th birthday of fashion icon Carmen Dell’Orefice. Alongside Downton will be Iranian artist Ali Mahdavi, who presents drawings for Jean Paul Gaultier; hugely influential fashion illustrator/journalist Gladys Perint Palmer; esteemed New Yorker Steven Stipelman, whose work will be available to buy for the first time; and modern-day Italian master Andrea Ferolla, who’s known for capturing the elegance and beauty in Italian society. See you in the ‘FROW’.

This inspiring new book is subtitled ‘Conversations with Trailblazing Creative Women’ and it is just that. The multi-disciplinary Mexican artist brings us face-to-face with the likes of Debbie Harry, Yoko Ono, Tracey Emin and FKA Twigs, through a series of endlessly interesting photographs and interviews. Marin, whose work centres on gender and cultural identity, spent seven years travelling to the homes, studios, theatres and galleries of these incredible female artists, capturing their portraits and stories in the places they felt most comfortable. In Polaroid form, the images are intimate and the words candid. A coffee table tome to cherish.

What it is to be human

Sophie Cookson explains how her role in Infinite had both heart and high-octane action, and why it made her ask bigger questions about how we live WORDS by LIZ SKONE JAMES PHOTOGRAPHY by ALDO FILIBERTO STYLING by KATE SINCLAIR HAIR by PAUL DONOVAN MAKE UP by LIZ PUGH

S

ophie Cookson is feeling philosophical. “If you were going to revisit the earth, would you live in a hedonistic way, or would you actually try and do some good?” She asks me. “If we could live multiple lives, what would we choose to do? What would our impact on the world be? What decisions would we make? These are things that I think we are all thinking about: concerns like climate change make it feel almost like we are at a melting point.” It is certainly not how I expected to begin the interview, but the subject is raised during a conversation about her latest project, an Antoine Fuqua action thriller for Paramount Studios called Infinite (the story has been adapted from Eric Marikranz’s book The Reincarnationist Papers by Ian Shorr). Mark Wahlberg plays the lead, Evan, a man who, struggling with his identity and his demons, becomes embroiled in the world of Cognomina, a secret society of people who possess total recall of their past lives. Sophie plays opposite him as Nora, the group’s leader. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rupert Friend and Dylan O’Brien also star. “I have always loved Fuqua’s films,” she tells me. “And to get to work with Mark… and even though I have no scenes with Chiwetel, that was really exciting, too. There were lots of pinch-me moments.”

Your home, your life

05_FabricSEP21_Interview SC_6p.indd 42

“The thing that really drew me to it, though, is that it has a lot of heart,” she explains. “It deals with grief and loss. My character, Nora, has had to deal with living through multiple lives, realising who she is over and over again. So, she is having to deal with constant loss, and head a tribe, which makes her a very three-dimensional, rounded woman – I don’t think you often get those characters in that kind of genre.” The film may have heart, but it has plenty of action, too, which was a new experience for Sophie. “I trained so hard,” she recalls. “I think that there is an assumption that when you do a film like this, you have four months training. It was very much not like that! I think I had about three weeks before we started shooting, so it was very rigorous. And doing lots of martial arts, weight training and weapon training – so, I was really thrown in at the deep end, but I loved it so much. And I had amazing stunt doubles as well, who were really supportive and taught me lots. And the stunt coordinator was also a woman, which really helped, because I had never been in that kind of environment before. It was so nice to have a really female centric team in what could have been quite a masculine environment.” Has it spawned a new hobby? “Not necessarily the martial arts,” Sophie laughs, “that could definitely do with some improvement! But it has given me a sort of ethic around working out and looking after myself. It has been quite an inspiring fitness journey, which has been really nice, because I think I have a slightly love/hate relationship with it normally.” Work on the film was finished at the end of 2019: “a lifetime ago,” Sophie remarks. Since then, there have been obvious delays getting it into cinemas. “I think we have definitely had Covid issues – as has everyone in the film industry,” she explains. “And I think it is an interesting thing, when you have a deadline, you work towards that, and deadlines keep getting pushed, and I think when that happens, there can potentially be overthinking. And it is hard, everyone really struggled. But I’m just happy that it is out now, and that people are going to get to see it.” Sophie won’t be among the audience, though. Watching her work is “far too anxiety-inducing,” she admits. The one exception to that being The Trial of Christine Keeler. Sophie played the lead role in the BBC’s 2019 Profumo affair dramatisation – the story of 19-year-old Christine Keeler, who found herself at the heart of a political sex scandal that rocked the government in the 1960s. “That, I really enjoyed watching back,” she reveals. “I think because it was a real passion project. I felt very protective of it and what we had created, so that, I really did want to watch back.” Written by BAFTA award-winning novelist and screenwriter Amanda Coe and directed by Andrea Harkin, both the six-part series, and Sophie’s role in it were critically acclaimed, so it is no surprise that she is proud of the project. “That felt like a really important moment,” she says. “Amanda had written the most sublime script, and it was one of those jobs where it just felt really important to tell the story. I think that’s when acting can be really exciting. You know, I was able to vindicate Christine, and I felt like I was really flying the flag for her. So, for me, that was a really important job, and I was involved in the script process, and had a really great relationship with all of the people that I worked with. But it was exhausting as well – I was in all day, every day doing these incredibly heart wrenching scenes, so it was a good exercise in stamina. And, as well, leading a show for the first time.” The series was certainly a high point, though Sophie’s star was already on its ascent. Fresh out of drama school, she beat hundreds of other hopefuls to win the female lead opposite Taron Egerton in Matthew Vaughn’s 2014 film Kingsman: The Secret Service. I ask how the role came about and Sophie recalls putting together a self-tape while working away from home on another project. “I remember filming it in a really dark Dublin hotel room, on a really wonky camera, and I remember thinking that it was one of those tapes you get that you are never going to hear anything about,” she tells me. “And then I got called back in. And I kept getting called back in, and eventually I met Matthew and did a chemistry read with Taron, and the whole thing is absolutely dreamlike when I think about it. I was so, so,

so lucky. It was really, right time, right place. It just felt like this beautiful serendipity. And it was really thrilling, but incredibly daunting. I think it helped that I had never been on a large-scale film set like that before, so I didn’t know what to expect, and I just took it as it came. Looking back on it now, it is definitely slightly blurry,” she laughs. Sophie tells me that she will be forever grateful for that rare opportunity; it saw her named as a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and has undoubtedly opened doors for her in the industry since. “I think working with Matthew off the bat, straight out of drama school was amazing, because he is so good at championing unknown talent. And he is very supportive, he has helped me a few times since, so I feel very lucky to have that backing,” she says. Consequently, with each carefully chosen role, Sophie has continued to establish herself as an international acting talent to watch. But, like many in her industry, she hasn’t worked much recently – though in Sophie’s case, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the pandemic. “I’ve been pregnant, and I have had a baby. Which is work, I have to say. It made actual work seem like a breeze,” she laughs. “I am just about to start work next week, and I am chomping at the bit to do so. Having a baby is the most beautiful, rewarding experience, but I think you just miss that facet of your personality. I think women sometimes feel guilt or shame around wanting to get back to work, and stepping away from being a full-time mum, and I think that is definitely something I will experience. I am sure there will be moments when I think, God, I wish I was with my child. But working is a fundamental part of my personality, and something that I love doing, and I have really, really missed it. I am so nervous, but so excited,” she reveals. Those emotions encompass so much more than simply feeling a little rusty: Covid has changed the world since Sophie has been on maternity leave, and she is prepared for things to be a little different on set. “There are lots of hoops to jump through before you even get to the studio,” she reveals. “Which is good, because I think that we are far from out of the woods where that is concerned. I’m sure that it will be a slightly different experience, but the industry was halted for so long that people will do anything to keep it going.” It is a discussion that leads us to the extended theatre closures; Sophie is, understandably, thrilled that things are now opening up. “I am going for the first time on Friday, and I am so excited; I can’t quite imagine what it is going to be like,” she grins. “It’s called Hymn, and it is at The Almeida, with Adrian

05_FabricSEP21_Interview SC_6p.indd 46

Lester, and I know nothing about it, which I am really excited about! I love going to see something, not reading anything about it, and just turning up with a totally blank canvas.” While being in the audience will do for now, she is waiting for the right opportunity to get back on stage herself. In 2018 she made her stage debut in Killer Joe, playing opposite Orlando Bloom in the West End revival of the blackly comic thriller, which focuses on a family who hatch a get-richquick scheme to murder their estranged mother for insurance money. “When I was doing it I was just bouncing off the walls the whole time with adrenaline,” she recalls. “It is energy depleting, but also gives you an incredible buzz – that strange magic that happens in the air between the audience and the performer. It is intangible. Yes, magic, and I love it.” Though the skillset is fundamentally the same, the experience of theatre is very different to film, Sophie explains. “I love that solidarity that comes from theatre. For example, on Infinite, I passed Chiwetel in the corridor, whereas if we were doing Infinite the Musical or something,” she laughs, “we would have all had time together, and we would’ve got to share the weight of the story and discuss what we thought it was about. And I think that is a very exciting thing – being in a rehearsal room.” Aside from getting back to work, I wonder what else she is excited for as the world reopens. “Gosh, aren’t we all excited for everything?” She exclaims. “It is the longest time I have ever been in one place; I think. I had a week in Cornwall last week, which was absolute bliss.” Of course, being in one place is tolerable when that place just happens to be on the doorstep of Hampstead Heath. “I love being near the Heath, I find it incredibly freeing,” she tells me. “I am fortunate in that I am not too long a stroll away from it. Going up there first thing in the morning when it is really foggy, and the city is just emerging through the clouds, I love that. And I love that you really feel the weather there – living in a city, you can be quite sheltered and protected from the elements, whereas the Heath feels very raw. I grew up in the countryside, and I think I probably am a country girl at heart, but on the Heath, if you just squint your eyes, you can imagine you are in a nice meadow somewhere. It is gorgeous. I love it on a windy day like today, because it just has such personality. I feel like I know every blade of grass on the Heath after the pandemic, but I still absolutely adore it.” Perhaps the perfect spot to sit and reflect on what it is to be human? Infinite will be released in cinemas this month

FABRIC RECOMMENDS

The Couture Brow by Suzanne Martin I don’t think I have ever been as closely scrutinised as when I first meet Suzanne Martin. As we chat, she studies my face in detail. She is easy company, so it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. As we talk, she takes pictures and makes measurements; hers is an exact art. A former make up artist working with Christian Dior, Suzanne has now trained as an aesthetician, and her brilliant work with semi-permanent make up, specifically brows, has garnered her a following of devoted fans. Among them, A-listers, who travel from far and wide to see her in the discreet surroundings of The Lanesborough’s exclusive spa. Suzanne uses a brow pencil to draw on her desired shape, plucking away stray hairs, before applying local anaesthetic cream and setting to work crafting the ultimate brow to frame my eyes and balance my face. She uses individual strokes, blending bespoke colours from a selection of mineral pigments and using micro needles to achieve varying weights of line. No two faces are the same, and no face is symmetrical, she explains, so it is important that brows shouldn’t look templated. The process is painless, with just a few moments of mild discomfort as Suzanne initially breaks the skin. It takes around an hour.

Your home, your life

06_FabricSEP21_Style&Wellbeing_2p.indd 48

The immediate results are striking – my new brows are darker than they will eventually look, but I am thrilled with them. One of my eyebrows naturally droops, giving me a perma-melancholy expression, but Suzanne has lifted it to meet the arch of the other. Both are longer and a little fuller and darker. It makes my eyes stand out and my expression look immediately brighter. I’m back in the calm luxury of The Lanesborough a month later for phase two. This, Suzanne tells me, is when the real magic happens. It’s an opportunity for her to go over her work, checking that the shape and the shade are perfect. The process is exactly as before, and Suzanne takes pictures and measures as she goes. The results are indeed magical, and will last for a year, when I’ll be back for a top up. I look younger, and the shape of my face appears subtly changed. And I love waking up in the morning, ready to go. People compliment my new look, unable to put their finger on exactly what work I’ve had done. LSJ

Whether because we don’t feel comfortable with it yet, or simply because we’ve come to the realisation we prefer not to sweat it out in front of an audience, lots of us haven’t been back to the gym since the start of the pandemic. If you’re in the same boat, but finding it hard to find motivation at home, you might like this brand new concept, which combines the benefits of a private workout with state-of-the-art facilities and expert guidance. Last month saw the launch of ELYSIUM, a collection of private micro gyms across the Capital. Founded by London-based personal trainer Guido Basola, with one site in Aldgate and two in Seven Dials, ELYSIUM caters to PTs looking for a professional space to train clients, as well as those looking for somewhere to do a solo workout or to train with friends. Coming from a luxury fitness background, Guido has worked closely with gym designers, LIFTD Design to create luxurious yet functional boutique spaces. Each boasts a selection of state-of-the-art equipment, including Concept2 rowers and bikes, BLK BOX dumbells and kettlebells and Primal Strength Commercial Cable Crossovers (for arm, chest and shoulder muscle workouts). With plans to expand across London, this is great news for fitness enthusiasts. Priced at £25 per hour and available for pre-booking via the ELYSIUM app. For details, see elysiumgyms.com

Feast your eyes on this month’s finest SWEET TREATS

Chocolates by post We’ve just discovered Russell & Atwell and it’s love at first bite for their indulgent fresh chocolates. Steve Russell and Giles Atwell questioned why we are still eating long-life chocolate if everything tastes better fresh. Unable to arrive at a satisfactory answer, they set themselves the challenge of creating restaurant quality, fresh chilled chocolates to be enjoyed at home. Hundreds of prototypes later, Russell & Atwell launched last year, made with delicious, high quality and sustainable ingredients that you’d find in your own kitchen – think fresh organic British cream, butter and wildflower honey. The four original flavours (Outrageously Creamy Milk; Scrumptiuous Salted Caramel; Ridiculously Smooth Dark and Remarkably Rich Extra Dark) are this month joined by Cracking Creamy Hazelnut – moreish mouthfuls studded with chunks of hazelnut and filled with a premium Italian Romana hazelnut cream (a new favourite for the ambassador?). And a new gift subscription makes it possible to treat loved ones to (or reward yourself with) tasty treats on repeat. Sweet!

CHARITY

Dinner with a difference This month, modern Indian restaurant Kricket announces the return of their popular Guest Chef Series at the White City restaurant. Every Tuesday in September, head chef Will Bowlby will be joined in the kitchen by a different chef. Guests at each of the special evenings will be welcomed with a cocktail, before tucking into a threecourse, collaboratively-designed sharing menu – each dish showcasing the guest chef’s unique cooking style alongside Will’s approach to Indian food. Priced at £55 per head, all profits are being donated to long-term charity partner Apne Aap Women’s Collective. The anti-trafficking organisation serves the women and children of the red-light district in Mumbai, an area that has been acutely affected by the events of the last year. Kicking off the exciting programme on 7 September is James Cochran of Upper Street’s 12:51, a regular on Great British Menu; next up, the inimitable Michel Roux Jr.; followed by award-winning chef Andrew Clarke, founder of Pilot Light, a foundation focusing on mental health in the hospitality industry; Selin Kiazim, author and chef patron of the wonderful Oklava rounds off the exciting series. Not to be missed. Kricket, 2 Television Centre, 101 Wood Lane, W12 (020 3958 2867) For details and to book, see kricket.co.uk/guest-chef-series-2021

LONDON FOODIE

What’s the last thing you cooked? Spaghetti alle vongole.

Head chef, Evelyn’s Table

What do you cook on days off? I keep things very simple when I’m cooking at home, but love big flavours and hearty dishes. I enjoy making fresh pasta and ramen.

Luke Selby

What’s your signature dish? I don’t feel like I have one just yet – we’ve only just started doing our own thing at Evelyn’s Table, so it’s all still relatively new. The menu is constantly evolving as we’re working so closely with the seasons and always refining everything, so dishes come and go all the time. We recently had a raw beef, wild nettle tempura and English wasabi dish on the menu, which I would

say is quite symbolic of what we do. Best meal you’ve ever eaten? In Tokyo, I had a really memorable meal at a three-star Michelin restaurant called Kanda. It was as much about the food as it was the experience. I was by myself, and it was really hard to find, set in the middle of a housing estate – I couldn’t read Japanese so I had no idea where I was going. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I turned up, but I was completely blown away. If you could cook for anyone, who would it be? My dad. He is the reason I got into being a chef when I was younger. When my brothers

and I cook for him it gives him so much enjoyment. Guilty food pleasure Ketchup! What should no good kitchen be without? A kitchen porter – the unsung hero. They are such a key part of every kitchen team. Evelyn’s is an intimate 10 seater counter dining experience, led by Luke and his two brothers, Nat and Theo Selby, and serves a monthly evolving menu. Hakkasan, Hanway Place

NEW OPENING

Lucky Londoners Great news: opening this month, The Londoner, the world’s first super boutique hotel will offer a range of foodie experiences. Starting at the top, 8 at The Londoner is a sophisticated rooftop izakaya lounge, offering modern Japanese cuisine, innovative mixology, dramatic design and breath-taking views. Whitcomb’s is the hotel’s signature restaurant. Here, a seasonal à la carte menu created by executive head chef Shailesh Deshmukh will evoke the essence of contemporary French cooking. Think classic escargot with white wine, garlic and n’duja lemon butter. Joshua’s Tavern is one for the gin lovers – named after 18th-century portrait artist, Sir Joshua Reynolds, whose favourite tipple it was.

Each of the 50+ regionally sourced gins comes paired with a unique combination of garnish, houseinfused bitters and tonic. The fizzy stuff is honoured at The Stage – from a bubbly breakfast, to a nightcap of seasonal rock oysters, Oscietra and Beluga caviar, charcuterie and artisan cheeses, paired with the finest cuveés. Complementing The Retreat, The Londoner’s 24-hour gym and wellbeing area, is Refuel. Here, guests can enjoy detoxifying smoothies and Ayurvedic morning ritual bowls. Last but by no means least, The Residence offers intimate dining, a bar, drawing room and whisky room – open to residents only. A good excuse to book in and sample the delights. For details, see thelondoner.com

That Hakkasan is 20 years old seems inconceivable and makes me feel uncomfortably old. I remember as though it were yesterday being taken to the restaurant on Hanway Place by my then editor, shortly after it opened. She wanted to distract me from the fact that she could offer me neither a pay rise nor a permanent contract, and it worked. I thought the buzzy underground space was achingly cool and I was blown away by the exquisite Cantonese food, vowing to go back as soon as my salary allowed – an ambition I had to put on ice for several years. When the day finally came, it was exactly as I remembered. Since then, the Michelin-starred restaurant has remained a favoured spot for celebrations and special meals, even serving us with a very welcome anniversary takeaway during the lockdown. So, of course, I’m keen to honour its own special birthday, too; the team have designed a limited edition set menu that does just that. Featuring dishes first introduced on Hanway Place’s menu in 2001 as well as newer favourites, the tasting menu showcases Hakkasan’s impressive journey. As we descend the staircase into the buzzy restaurant everything feels gloriously, glamorously normal, and wonderfully removed from the worries of the last year. We are greeted with a celebratory cocktail, the Hakkatini. It is a mix of orange infused Belvedere vodka, apple, Campari, Grand Marnier and orange cream bitters, and goes straight to my head in the very best way. As we sip, we sample the trio of dim sum (scallop, langoustine and chicken with abalone). Tiny, exquisite mouthfuls, they are almost too beautiful to eat. There is also a steamed scallop, served in its shell with brown-butter black bean sauce, on a bed of rice vermicelli noodles, topped with a delicate shallot and shrimp tuille. Appetites truly whet, we move on to the mains. The oatmeal Dover sole – served with osmanthus jelly and garlic herb puree – is a sight to behold, garnished with the skeleton deep fried as a crunchy edible accompaniment. Indeed, the seafood is the star: meaty braised lobster comes atop egg noodles and is served with delicious lobster wontons. Which isn’t to say that we don’t lick the plate clean when the stir-fry black pepper rib eye beef with Merlot arrives – playfully presented, it sits on a nest of crispy noodles. Dessert is caramelised chocolate cream with plum and raspberry jelly and sake vanilla foam and is well worth saving space for. Delicately flavoured, it rounds off the meal perfectly. Here’s to many happy returns. LSJ The 20 Years of Hakkasan menu is priced at £110 per person; available for parties of two or more. 8 Hanway Place, W1T (020 7927 7000; hakkasan.com)

Petersham Nurseries’ Pear and walnut upsidedown tart with crème fraîche Fans of Petersham Nurseries will love their gorgeous book, which charts the Boglione family’s journey from the very early days as a tiny plant nursery behind their home. Incorporating stories of Francesco and Gael’s past, the book illustrates how the business developed in line with their personal commitment to nature, integrity and family. Intertwined with beautiful recipes for every season, and illustrated with gorgeous photography by Andrew Montgomery, it is as beautiful as you’d expect it to be. A special edition is released this month, which comes in a linen box cover with a limited run of 1,000 copies (Petersham Nurseries, £150, petershamnurseries.com). Offering us a taste of what to expect, the family shared this delicious autumnal recipe. Tuck in.

INGREDIENTS For the rough-puff pastry 250g plain flour | 250g unsalted butter, firm but not chilled (remove from the fridge 2 hours before use) | 1 tsp salt | 125ml iced water

a large bowl and make a well in the middle. Dice the butter and add to the centre of the well with the salt. G radually mix the ingredients together with your fingertips. When the cubes of butter have become very small and the mixture resembles rubble (you should still be able to see some small chunks of butter), add a little of the iced water and mix together. Continue adding the water slowly until you have a firm dough (you may not need all the water). Mix until combined, but do not be tempted to knead. P lace the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a 30 x 30cm square. Fold into thirds, as if folding a letter, to make three layers. Turn vertically through 180 degrees, roll to flatten and then fold again. Turn again through 180 degrees and repeat. Chill the pastry for 20 minutes, then roll and fold the pastry twice more as above. Keep in the fridge until needed. P reheat the oven to 180°C. T o make the caramel, place the sugar in a heavy-bottomed oven-safe 28cm frying pan and cook over a medium–low heat, not stirring, for around 10 minutes, or until it has melted and starts to bubble (you may find it helpful to gently swirl the pan once or twice towards the end). Remove from the heat and carefully add the butter, whisking constantly until combined. If it splits, put it back over a low heat and whisk continuously until it comes together. Arrange the pears, core side up, in a circle around the pan. R oll out the pastry into a circle large enough to cover the pears and place gently over the top, pushing down the pastry around the sides. Make a hole in the middle and brush with the egg white. B ake for 30–40 minutes until golden brown, then remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 10 minutes, as the caramel will be piping hot and can easily burn. T o remove the tart from the pan, place a large plate on top of the pan, then, with both hands, squeeze the plate and pan together and flip over in one quick movement. T his moves the pastry to the bottom and reveals the pears, now beautifully caramelised. Sprinkle with the walnuts and serve with the crème fraîche.

For the tart 150g caster sugar | 100g unsalted butter, cubed | 3 ripe pears, peeled and cored and cut in half vertically | 1 large egg white | A handful of walnuts, toasted | 200ml crème fraîche, to serve

Having launched in Crouch End this summer, a new Ready Burger site will open on Finchley Road this month, and delivery is now available through Just Eat, Deliveroo and Uber Eats. Everything on the 100 per cent

plant-based menu is made to the highest standards, with a focus on sustainability. Producing a single plant burger emits 92 per cent less greenhouse gas emissions than a beef burger, uses 70 per cent less water and requires less than 10 per cent of the land – so it’s not just kind to your wallet. Ready Burger CEO and co-founder Max Miller explains: “Plantbased food served hot,

The best of Bristol HOLIDAY HOMES

Marta Padron, Deputy General Manager at The Bristol hotel “Bristol is a city that is bursting at the seams with creativity, and The Bristol, located on the iconic Harbourside is the perfect base from which to explore this exciting and evocative town. We pride ourselves on delivering exceptional service for our guests, with the best of local produce and friendly, passionate staff. Bristol is probably most famous for being the home of the elusive and enigmatic street artist Banksy. While you can go on many walking tours to view his works, M Shed is hosting an incredible exhibition named Bristol Street Art: The Evolution of a Global Movement until 31 October. This unique exhibition showcases work by Banksy, Robert Del Naja and other local British and Irish artists, but most importantly, ends with a spotlight on how global artists are now using the medium of street art to affect meaningful change around the world. Bristol has been a trailblazer for vegan cuisine in the UK for many years, while also being a well-established foodie’s paradise. From Michelin-awarded restaurants like BOX-E and Wilks, to ‘Eat A Pitta’ at St Nicolas Market’s glass arcade (which has acquired cult-like status for its falafel), there is something for everyone. Finally, finish off a day of culture, food and exploration with a nightcap of the finest local pours in the stylish River Lounge at The Bristol – the perfect end to close out a busy day of discovery!”

If you like your travel experiences to tell a tale, you’ll love this new hotel nestled on the edge of Bodmin Moor. Ahead of its time when it was built in 1779, Bodmin Jail boasted individual cells, hot water and light and airy areas for prisoners to live and work. Almost 100 years ago it closed its doors to prisoners and

was sold to a firm who planned to demolish it and build houses on the land. Laced with dynamite and detonated, the walls failed to collapse, with the vibrations only succeeding in demolishing the roof. After this, the building was left to rot, exposed to the elements. But now, a landmark £50 million redevelopment

has seen new life breathed into this historic monument. The jail now features a state-of-the-art visitor centre and a brand-new hotel. Each of the 70 luxury rooms has been created by incorporating three cells, the original stone walls and ceilings provide a striking contrast to the sumptuous decor.

Guests can feast on Cornish cuisine in the restaurant, set within the old chapel, or relax with drinks in the cosy bar, once the governor’s office. Whilst past residents longed to leave, we’ll wager you’ll be wanting to linger a little longer… For details and to book, see bodminjailhotel.com

FIT FOR A KING

Lose yourself in boutique luxury at the Kings Arms Hotel in London’s Hampton Court WORDS by PENNY CLEMENTS

Just a short hop upstream from central London, Hampton boasts charm and historic appeal. Not to mention being home to Hampton Court Palace – once home to Henry VIII and his many wives. Hankering after a change of scenery, it seems the perfect spot for a last minute holiday. Our base for exploring is The Kings Arms Hotel – a Grade II listed 18th century former inn, now contemporary-chic hotel and restaurant. It occupies a dream spot, right beside the Palace’s Lion Gate, backing onto the famous maze (the UK’s oldest surviving hedge maze, no less) and opposite the entrance to Bushy Park. Inside is welcoming and cosy. Old-world charm and contemporary décor merge seamlessly at this boutique hotel. The lobby is bright and airy, with a mosaic tiled floor, bespoke artwork and large light emitting windows. Equally impressive is the restaurant and bar, The SIX, which is named after the aforementioned royal wives. It is tastefully decorated with royal blue

banquette seating, gold light fixtures and ample green foliage. Varying in size and shape, each of the 14 rooms has been individually decorated in a luxuriously muted colour palette. Expect large sleepinducing beds, original artworks and plenty of home comforts with all the mod cons: TV, coffee machine, locally-sourced toiletries, soft fluffy towels and robes, a well-stocked minibar and complimentary wine and biscuits. We are staying on the first floor, in a room that boasts views over the beautiful park. Smokey greys and warming dusky pinks are carried from the plush fabrics right through to the handmade tiles used in the rain shower. Large, draped, botanicalprinted curtains frame the view, and the secondary glazing in our front-facing room ensures we are completely cut off from comings and goings outside. Keen to work up an appetite for our Sunday roast, after making ourselves comfortable, we head out for a stroll around Bushy Park. At over 1,000 acres, it is the second-largest of London’s eight Royal Parks; we wander through the peaceful Woodland Gardens and admire the freely roaming deer. Back at the hotel, it is time to eat. The SIX serves an eclectic, seasonal British menu that uses the highest-quality local produce (with vegetables picked straight from the

Palace’s kitchen garden). Food has been curated by Michelin-starred chef Mark Kempson and the kitchen is run by head chef Jack Scoines and his talented team. I tuck into a delicious plate of roasted pork belly and roasties cooked in dripping, which come accompanied by a scrumpy chutney, glazed vegetables and a healthy serving of orchard pig cider gravy. My partner, meanwhile, chooses 31-day aged roast sirloin of Angus beef with all the trimmings. Both are delicious, and feel very much like the sort of thing the staff in the Palace kitchens might have produced for a royal feast. Full to almost bursting, we opt to share the bee pollen and vanilla pannacotta with Champagne strawberries and raspberry sorbet. We’re glad we did, as it is utterly divine. We wash our meal down with Hampton Court’s award-winning small batch handcrafted botanical gin, The Six Wives, and a few pints of locally-brewed Wimbledon Ale.

09_FabricSEP21_Travel Review - Kings Arms_1p.indd 55

That evening, feeling incredibly satisfied, we retreat upstairs to our room. Snuggled into the comfiest of queen-sized beds, with the thick curtains drawn, we are set up for the deepest sleep we’ve enjoyed in months. Perhaps unsurprisingly, we’re still quite full when we arrive for breakfast the next morning, but the offer of the rare treat of cooked breakfast proves too hard to turn down. A jaunt around Hampton Court Palace is on the itinerary, and we enjoy a wonderful sunny day, full of adventure and fun. The Kings Arms Hotel has proven to be a real jewel in the Capital’s crown and we very much hope to be back again soon. Rate for a standard room for 2 people from £120 per night (including breakfast). DESIGN FOR LIFE WITH THE LONDON DESIGN FESTIVAL ON OUR MINDS THIS MONTH, WE SHINE A SPOTLIGHT ON A FEW OF OUR HAND-PICKED HIGHLIGHTS WORDS by ALI HOWARD

T

his September sees LDF return triumphantly for its 19th edition. The focus? Creative and cultural activity to re-ignite the Capital and kick-start London’s economy. These may sound like ambitious aims, but given the festival’s history, we’re in no doubt they’re doable. Since its relatively humble beginnings in 2003, the London Design Festival has played host to leading global practitioners, thinkers, and educators. It has showcased the city’s creative brilliance, and ultimately, anchored London as the design capital of the world. For LDF chairman Sir John Sorrell CBE, this year’s event holds more significance than ever. “London has some of the world’s greatest designers living and working here, who come from all over and make this city their home,” he says. “Over the years, this has enabled us to develop exciting programmes which showcase both design’s joyous side, but also the ideas and innovations with the capacity to shape our societies. We hope that this year’s festival will not only be seen by those in London, but audiences all around the world, and that we’re able to demonstrate that design will be at the heart of the future.”

Planted King’s Cross is one of the UK’s most sustainable urban regeneration sites, so it’s only right that this biophilic design show, which aims to reconnect people and spaces with nature, should find its natural home here. The first of its kind, Planted will showcase an impressive line-up of sustainable brands alongside thought-leading talks. Design names to look out for include Benchmark, Another Country and Naturalmat, while a six-part talks programme will explore greening cities in a post-pandemic world. Scheduled across two days, speakers will discuss the ways in which we can rewild our cities in order to halt the catastrophic loss of biodiversity.

Tactile Baltics With our wanderlust on overdrive, this is an exhibition to excite travel-hungry design lovers. Offering an insight into the design scenes of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania, Tactile Baltics explores the region’s deep-rooted connection to nature – with the concept of tactility at its heart. The Shoreditch-based group show will spotlight the work of established and emerging designers alike through 18 contemporary projects – six from each country – working across the fields of furniture, tableware, lighting, textiles and jewellery. The installations offer visitors an understanding of the key themes related to Baltic design, from sustainability, tradition and craftsmanship, to innovation and materials. tactilebaltics.com

Unscripted/Storylines In textiles, Kvadrat’s latest collections can be seen at the brand’s Chelsea Harbour showroom. Unscripted, by Berlin-based Sarah Illenberger is inspired by the free spirit of scribbles. For her, the medium of colour and individual expression in a non-purposeful way offers “a comforting proof of natural, intuitive behaviour in digital times.” Storylines by Kvadrat explores the line as the essence of creativity. Ethereal and painterly, the collection imagines thread as the line, yarn as the syntax, and textile as the story. Inspiring stuff. kvadrat.dk/en

Designing Futures Spanning collectible design and functional art, Adorno’s LDF offering is a comprehensive one. The digital gallery will showcase new work from some of the world’s most experimental creators. With the best in tech at their fingertips, Adorno’s exhibitions will take place both physically, at several locations around the Capital, and online, through immersive virtual 3D experiences. ENIS KARAVIL

This interior architect’s raison d’être is curated interiors that tell a story. His own west London apartment is a chic illustration WORDS by ALI HOWARD PHOTOGRAPHY by MEL YATES

“I call it ‘maximalist expressions in minimalist details’,” says Enis assuredly, when asked to describe his interiors style. For him, a clear creative vision is what’s needed to pull off a property like this one, with its chic monochrome décor and dark drama. “It’s a narrative based on experiments with contrasts,” he explains, “creating a harmonious balance between fantasy and reality, reconnecting the past and present, using Eastern and Western elements to design spaces with a heritage feel... I think I am a curator as well as an architect, and my strength is to bring things together.” Having studied and worked in London, Enis returned to his home town of Istanbul in 2015. Here, he co-founded Sanayi313, a concept store, kitchen, and architecture studio with his brother Amir. But London will always be Enis’ adopted

home, such is his affection for the city, and he’s glad to have set down roots here, too. “London is one of the most inspiring cities in the world,” he says. “A multicultural city that has everything – restaurants and shops from all around the world, galleries, workshops, museums and theatres... In London, you always find something to do. Istanbul is inspiring in its own special way. It’s a city where you feel the East-meetsWest sentiment at its most intense. It used to be a much more vibrant city, booming with creativity, but let’s say that’s been put on hold for a while. Both cities have pros and cons, and I love them both. Istanbul has a better climate, that’s for sure!” The Notting Hill apartment is a spacious two-bed, two-storey affair that sits on a narrow footprint but benefits from oodles of natural

light, thanks to its grand floor-to-ceiling arched windows both front and back. Built in the early 1900s, the flat boasts double height ceilings, a beautiful terrace, and plenty of original Victorian features, which Enis loves. “Buildings tell stories,” he says. “Character is all that matters. When I bought this property, I tried to understand the culture of the house first and built everything around it, making sure that with everything I added, the house remained true to its character.” While the bones of the property remained largely untouched, Enis opened up the kitchen space into the living room, installed an all stainless-steel custom-built kitchen and, ingeniously, designed a mobile ladder to provide access to the extra storage space above the ceiling. He also replaced the staircase connecting the two floors with a cast iron spiral staircase, bought from an antiques dealer. Along with a taxidermy crow perched mid-squawk on a black top hat, and a statement umbrella stand fashioned from antlers, the lacy black staircase is entirely in fitting with the apartment’s theatrical noir aesthetic. “The black and white scheme is kind of a signature for me,” he explains, “and I wanted it to come to life by mixing in natural materials with character so that they contrast with each other. It was a deliberate choice to use materials with strong textures but not-so-dominant colours.” Flitting between the two cities, Enis imagined his London pad to be a home from home, and he wanted the end result to have a lived-in feel. While much of the designer’s interiors choices are starkly elegant – gothic even – the apartment is never not homely. A huge and inviting Arflex leather couch by Umberto Asnago and an antique pony skin club chair from Nicole Farhi Home await him on his returns from Istanbul, as does his favourite painting above the fireplace. “It’s the most treasured item in this house,” he says. “It’s a portrait of my aunt, showing her at a ball in Brazil.” He’s also named some of his favourite pieces in the flat, like pets. The taxidermy crow goes under the moniker of Hitchcock, naturally, and the statue in the living room, which Enis tops with an original, signed Ottoman fez, is called Esteban. The scarlet hat is a rare colour pop. You don’t have to be a sharp-eyed magpie to spot the architect’s collection of shiny coffee pots. In fact, it’s given pride of place in the living room

Clockwise from left: an ingenious ladder provides access to storage above the kitchen ceiling; grand arched windows flood the open plan living space with light; a floor-toceiling bookcase is dedicated to Enis’ collection of coffee pots; the original staircase was replaced with a cast iron spiral staircase, bought from an antiques dealer

and takes up an entire built-in bookcase that reaches all the way up to the ornate cornicing. “I’ve collected them from antique shops around the world,” he says. “It started with one and turned into quite an impressive collection over the years. I love collecting things with a history, or story, and enjoy seeing extravagant collections in minimal settings.” True to Enis’ design philosophy, the pots are displayed in a creative fashion, meticulously lined up, handles pointed outwards. The collection becomes a sculptural artwork in its own right. “In terms of interiors, repetition sometimes generates very good results,” he offers. “When the repetition comes from such a collection, which is a personal thing, it adds so much character to the interior as a reflection of its owner. Then you know that it’s not solely about the décor, but the lifestyle.”

Enis deftly mixes chic contemporary pieces, such as his collection of Fornasetti wall plates in the kitchen (again displayed in a creative and considered fashion), with wonderfully raw and rustic finds – perhaps the most impressive being the apartment’s reclaimed wood flooring, which he obtained from an old tobacco factory. “But the overall result is not rustic,” he is keen to point out. “It’s a balance of old and new, rustic and modern – timeless really, just like the house’s own features.” In keeping much of the furniture simple and casual, and instead toying with the details, Enis is able to easily update the property whenever he chooses. While he has his favourite go-to brands, some of the furnishings, such as the dining table with the glass top, and the box stools around it, are his own designs. So what’s next on the cards for this interior architect with an international outlook? “There’s this sculpture park which is being built on Turkey’s Black Sea border,” says Enis. “The project consists of a glass building, an old stone building, and a completely preserved old stable… We are also working on a vineyard house project in Bozcaada, which consists of stone structures that are totally in tune with nature. And then there’s this beach house project in Miami, which is a work in progress. So we are quite busy!” It’s little wonder Enis will be putting his feet up in his beloved “weekend home” in Notting Hill whenever he gets the chance.

Clockwise from top: with its black and white striped wall, the bedroom is in keeping with Enis’ signature style; the reclaimed wooden flooring running through the apartment was from an old tobacco factory; the prized taxidermy crow goes by the name of Hitchcock

Introducing Simply Sold

St. John’s Wood-based Perry Field is a broker and antiques expert – he tells us what that involves and explains how he works on behalf of his clients

Can you tell us a bit about what you do? People come to me at Simply Sold for a variety of reasons, including when they are clearing a home as part of the probate process, decluttering ahead of downsizing or remodelling, or simply looking to find a serious buyer for a particular heirloom. I can not only sell your valuables, but I can also arrange to have the property cleared completely, ready for completion of a sale or ready for refurbishment. Having been in the business for many years, my contacts range from auction houses and high-end dealers to collectors and private clients, enabling me to get the very best prices in any situation.

A Flemish 16th century hand-painted frame had been otherwise overlooked by another auction house, who thought its value might be around £1,500, but it went on to make over £6,000 A beautiful 19th century lacquered Chinese screen sold at auction for £6,000

What makes Simply Sold different? Because of the nature of my work, when people employ my services, it is often at difficult times – having to clear the home of a loved one or move from a house that you’ve lived in for many years is always emotional. Dealing with the practicalities can be challenging, which is where expert guidance can be invaluable – I can provide this on a discreet one-to-one basis. With probate, I understand the processes required – I can compile the initial reports for the Inland Revenue, then sort out those items that have value and can be sold, and dispose of the remaining contents, leaving the house vacant and ready to be sold. When it comes to selling on behalf of clients, my contacts enable me to sell directly, bypassing auction rooms if it will help to achieve higher prices. This avoids buyers having to pay auction costs, and sellers having to pay their buyer’s premium – so everybody is better off. How is the market for buying and selling? Uncertain times in a troubling world will always push up the value of tangible commodities and assets. And, having spent so much time within their own four walls over the past eighteen

21_FabricSEP21_Advertorial - Simply Sold_1p.indd 65

months, many people are looking to either clear out, or invest in items to improve their home. In the auction world we have been achieving prices far beyond our wildest expectations: there’s a strong market for mid-century items, and silver and gold jewellery has been selling for more than we have seen in quite some time. Equally, artwork is in high demand, and we’ve even started to see an improvement in the prices of Victorian oil paintings, which have been a very depressed market for quite some time. Unfortunately, there has been no such revival for brown furniture just yet! Can you tell us about some of your most unexpected sales? Well, this year has definitely shown some extraordinary results. Of note, an extensive Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica dinner service estimated at £20,000-£30,000 sold under the hammer for a record-breaking £55,000. On another occasion, we had a wonderful French cabinet signed by Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener for Jansen of Paris, which was offered for sale through Sworders with an original estimate of £8,000-£12,000, but went on to sell for a hammer price of £24,000. Of course, it’s all about finding and identifying the real hidden treasures and knowing the best way to sell them – specialist knowledge can make all the difference when it comes to achieving the best price. Selecting senior schools

Planning the next stage in your child’s education needn’t be stressful, says Richard Berlie, Headmaster at St. Anthony’s School for Boys

S

t. Anthony’s School for Boys is an ISI Excellent school in Hampstead, where academic endeavour is nurtured in a safe, familiar community. Thanks to the school’s unique ethos, from the time when they start at the school in Reception, all the way through to when they leave at the end of Year 6 or Year 8, every boy is recognised as an individual, with their own personal talents and interests. A rigorous academic curriculum, overseen by the Heads of Faculty, has been put in place to foster inquiry and build knowledge and understanding. Furthermore, a huge array of co-curricular activities – including drama, music-making, singing, art, debating, coding

20_FabricSEP21_Advertorial - St Anthony's Boys School_DPS2.indd 70

and many more – capture the interest and enthusiasm of young minds. Pastoral care is of utmost importance throughout the boys’ time at the school, but perhaps never more so than as they come to the end of their time there, when the role played by the form tutor enables helpful conversations between home and school regarding selecting secondary schools. The approach is to put the child’s needs first, identifying suitable schools where they will be happy and will continue to fulfil their potential. “My constant refrain to parents is to ‘cast the net wide’ when it comes to senior school applications,” Richard Berlie, Headmaster, explains. “A number of senior staff at St. Anthony’s have experience working at ISI Excellent – the highest category – independent boarding and day schools (in my case at Ampleforth, Emanuel and Dulwich), and we have great success in sending boys to the ‘big and famous’ schools. For some boys a highly competitive and academic environment is just the ticket; for others, who are no less bright academically, a more nurturing, less-imposing institution will be more appropriate.” Richard advises that now boys can, they should visit schools on open days. “It is always a good sign when a child waxes lyrical about sporting provision, an experiment seen in

the laboratory, or, perhaps most important of all, having felt welcomed and looked after by their hosts,” he says. “There is no exact science behind a decision to apply to a particular school and it can be counter-productive to over think the process. Trusting one’s instincts, and those of the child himself does require a leap of faith, but at St. Anthony’s we can help parents to reach informed decisions.” St. Anthony’s advise their families to apply for around six schools, including some

20_FabricSEP21_Advertorial - St Anthony's Boys School_DPS2.indd 71

competitive options alongside ‘safer’ choices. Boys going through the 11+ process will be judged on their performance on the day they sit their entrance exams. This is very much a data driven process, with perhaps only the top third of candidates making it through to interview. The 13+ process is more nuanced, with schools paying a little more attention to factors such as co-curricular involvement. Not surprisingly, many parents hedge their bets and apply for a mix of 11+ and 13+ schools. The school offers comprehensive support to boys preparing for senior school entrance tests. This coming academic year, all Year 6 boys will be allocated an individual laptop that will assist in their preparation for reasoning tests, as well as helping with digital learning in general. A detailed ‘Guide to Senior Schools’ is updated each year and shared with Year 5 families, and meetings are scheduled to explain the process, dispel myths and steady nerves. Individual interview practice is also arranged for boys. “At St. Anthony’s, the individual child is at the centre of our mission, and this informs the bespoke approach we take to senior school applications, and our wider philosophy of education,” Richard says.

No two boys are the same, so what is right for one may not suit another, but the staff at St. Anthony’s can help when it comes to these difficult decisions

Space to succeed

Choosing a Sixth Form is about more than just exams. Here’s how one north London school is setting itself apart The last couple of years have been particularly hard for those students in exam years, with disruption and uncertainty punctuating their learning experience. As we move back towards normality, it is a chance for students to reassess what they want from their school experience and The King Alfred School in north London believe they offer something unique. Director of Sixth Form Takako Yeung sums it up: “We provide a nurturing community where students can truly be themselves and achieve the grades they deserve. We empower our young people with the skills they need to live happy and fulfilled lives full of purpose.” With a choice of 27 A level subjects on offer, alongside a UAL accredited Extended Diploma in Performance and Production Arts, all interests are catered for. Students benefit from small class sizes and passionate teachers who take the time to get to know individuals and give them the support they need. All skills, talents and interests, whether academic, creative or sporting, are nurtured and celebrated because Sixth Form is about preparing for the next step in life, whatever that might be. Sixth Formers at King Alfred are fortunate to benefit from a brand new centre, with dedicated space to study and socialise. They will help to manage the new building, which boasts a common room with kitchen facilities and secure laptop charging lockers, quiet study space and computer suite, a seminar room as well as a landscaped garden area.

“The school accepts you for who you are and helps you become the best you can be. They have helped me find what I like and what interests me” Felix, Year 13.

The centre will provide a home for all the enrichment activities which are offered to students to prepare them for life after King Alfred, from visiting speakers, volunteering opportunities and workshops on student living, to the on-site UCAS advisor, the focus is not just on results day, but on creating well rounded individuals who will be a positive force in the world. The King Alfred School experience is best summed up by the students themselves. As Sam in Year 12 says: “This school has given me the confidence and the self-assurance to figure out what I want to do with my life and has guided and supported me to get to a place where I am able to fulfil those dreams.” To read about the Sixth Form experience at The King Alfred School search ‘Sixth Form Stories’ at kingalfred.org.uk. “I want students to be proud of their own success and the successes of their peers, whatever form that might take.” Takako Yeung

In search of the right school Katherine Vintiner, headteacher at Heathside School Hampstead highlights what to look for when choosing a Prep school

With so many different factors to consider, finding the right Prep school can feel like a daunting prospect. Co-ed or single sex, traditional or progressive, local or a commute away? What about class size, exam results and destination senior schools? With careful research, these defined factors and measurable results are usually relatively easy to understand and enable parents to make a shortlist of preferred schools. However, it doesn’t end there.

Head or heart? Choosing a school takes more than just using your head, and my advice to parents is to use your heart, too. Think about how a school feels, it’s a deeply personal choice, with no correct answer. Call it a feeling, culture or ethos, it’s this element that really defines whether a school provides the right fit for your child, and it can only be discovered by visiting in person. With restrictions lifted, good schools will welcome visitors and be glad to show parents

around, so they gain a genuine sense of how the children are looked after and the atmosphere of every class. By meeting senior leaders, preferably the headteacher, and spending time talking to staff, whatever their role, you’ll get a real feel for how a school is run. Ask yourself whether your child would feel comfortable here, whether your family would fit in, and whether you can see yourself becoming part of the fabric of the school.

The final questions to ask are: do you have confidence that the school will bring out the very best in your child? Will it understand their individuality, their learning style and, in the true definition of education, bring forth what is within? Keeping childhood special A broad curriculum, a stimulating range of clubs and excellent pastoral care are all expected at a good Prep school. So, what else can a school provide that makes it stand out? At Heathside, spending time on Hampstead Heath is a central part of our school. We use the natural environment to stimulate children’s imaginations and allow them to enjoy free play, climbing trees and building dens. At Heathside, we believe this provides essential balance to a rich and varied curriculum and the pressures of modern city life. Preparing for the future Preparing for exams without putting undue pressure on children is a challenging goal and takes skilful teaching. Parents are increasingly tuned in to the importance of children’s mental health and expect schools to develop their resilience to cope with the competitive nature of secondary school exams. For children at Heathside, the focus is on enjoying learning – a happy child learns well and by nurturing an individual’s progress, children thrive and want to do their best. Finding balance

At Hawkesdown House, academic endeavour is as important as encouraging kindness, initiative, courtesy and persistence

H

awkesdown House School is an independent preparatory school and nursery in leafy Kensington that offers an outstanding educational environment for girls and boys aged 2 – 11. Children are prepared for 7+, 8+ and 11+ examinations. The ethos and aims of the school embrace high academic standards, creative endeavour and individual attention. The motto ‘Endeavour, Courage, Truth’, reflects the aspirations for the children; that they grow into kind, capable and considerate adults. Hawkesdown House School is a safe place where people are kind, considerate and capable, where a child can start their school life happily and make early friends with confidence. It is a place of fun, purpose and success, providing an excellent education, inspiring and challenging the mind and the imagination. In a world that is changing at an accelerated rate, the school concentrates on knowing each child and understanding what is important to every family. Parents are fiercely loyal to this philosophy; it is borne out in the excellent results and immediately apparent in the open, thoughtful and happy children. Hawkesdown offers a broad, balanced curriculum, with excellent teaching, to encourage a love of knowledge and independent thinking. Sport, music and drama are all carefully integrated into the school week, to develop a wide mix of talents and interests, and for a happy and varied day. Pastoral care at the school is outstanding. The whole ethos of the school is for kindness, individual attention and very close links with parents. Pupils go on to King’s College Junior School, St. Paul’s Juniors, Sussex House, Summer Fields, Westminster Under School, Westminster Cathedral Choir School, and a range of other schools amongst the independent day schools in London and elsewhere.

Say what?

Though ZSL London Zoo has been in Regent’s Park since 1828, it was originally intended for scientific study, and only opened to the public in 1847. It was forced to close several times over the course of World War II, but the recent lockdowns marked its longest period of closure. During this time, the Pygmy goats missed their human visitors so much that zookeepers would take it in turns to walk them around the site, giving them an opportunity to interact with other animals

AREA FOCUS MEET THE LOCALS

Dr Kiki Morriss Owner, Primrose Hill Yoga

Primrose Hill is a unique neighbourhood that is easy to fall in love with. It has a relaxed village feel and a friendly community, yet it’s only minutes away from the heart of central London. My husband was born here, and we live in his family house with our three children. I start the day practising yoga – usually the Yoga in Bed or Sun Salutation sequences from my book, Nurturing Your Family With Yoga. Then I get a coffee from local grocers Melrose & Morgan and head out to walk our puppy. We’re lucky to be surrounded by green spaces, including Primrose Hill, with its unforgettable view of London’s skyline, and Regent’s Park, which houses the famous London Zoo, the magical Open Air Theatre, a tennis club and Queen Mary’s Rose Garden. Back home, it’s time to wake up my children and get them off to their school, which borders the woodlands and meadows of Hampstead Heath. This is another dog walking heaven, where you feel you’re in the middle of the countryside despite the proximity of the city. Locally, we have a huge choice of schools, both state and private, and a vast range of activities for children, including crafts at Sew Much Fun and dance at Primrose Hill Ballet School. I spend the day teaching yoga in the peaceful, light-filled studio my architect husband designed on the top floor of our house. As a trained doctor, I use this ancient discipline to improve the lives of people with medical conditions and stress-related issues. After 18 months of teaching online, I’m looking forward to welcoming my clients back to the studio. I also teach in local schools and am passionate about empowering children and improving their mental and physical health with the gift of yoga. In between teaching yoga classes, I pop out to the thriving independent shops right on my doorstep. Some of my favourites are Yeomans for fresh fruit and flowers, 50s-style Reenie’s for homemade ice cream, Primrose Bakery for cupcakes, OKA for sushi and Primrose Hill Books for truly inspiring reading matter. Primrose Hill is also home to creative, independent brands, such as Boujo Hake, who make beautiful underwear and luxury basics. After school we often meet friends for a picnic in Chalcot Square. This was the location for the Paddington movies, and, with its pastel-coloured townhouses, it is one of the prettiest parts of London. I know I’ll sleep well in quiet and safe Primrose Hill. I’m grateful to live and work in this very special place and to bring my children up here.

From top: Kiki in her light-filled yoga studio; gloriously green, Primrose Hill is a beloved spot for dog walkers; for fresh fruit and flowers, Yeomans can’t be beaten; along with their own delicious food, gourmet grocer and deli Melrose & Morgan champions artisan producers

From our agents...

2. Hassan Jumah Dexters

“The area is incredibly popular with families because of the green open spaces of Primrose Hill and Regent’s Park. Currently, the most soughtafter properties are three-bed garden flats and larger family houses. Oneand two-bed apartments start from £500,000, while freehold properties start in the region of £2 million.”

RECOMMENDED

Local heroes 1 Lemonia, NW1

There’s nothing like an authentic Greek taverna for a feel-good feast. The beloved Lemonia on Regent’s Park Road certainly hits the spot. According to Winkworth’s Chloe Martin, Lemonia is “a proper, real Greek restaurant. It’s been family-run for the past 42 years. We especially love the kleftiko. The best in town.” We couldn’t agree more – but if meat’s off the menu for you, we’d recommend the equally hearty vegetarian moussaka. Lemonia’s private room is available from this September for parties up to 40.

1. Paul Bennett Behr & Butchoff

“Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill are two of the most desirable places to live in London and they attract two distinctive types of buyers. Regent’s Park could be summed up as grand, ambassadorial and formal, whereas Primrose Hill is best described as artistic, bohemian and chic. Straddling the two is London Zoo, one of the most wonderful attractions in the Capital.”

89 Regent’s Park Road, NW1 (020 7586 7454; lemonia.co.uk)

2 Reenie’s, NW3

Ilana Ormonde from Knight Frank nominates this American style ice cream bar as her local hero – but it’s not just for the sweet treats on offer. “It was created by freelance theatre professionals when our beloved theatres closed during the pandemic,” she tells us. The familyowned business is in the heart of Primrose Hill and, according to Ilana, “features a local ice cream churner extraordinaire!” She adds: “Reenie’s was conceived and born out of a desire to connect with, uplift and delight our community at a time when we needed it most.” 3 Erskine Road, NW3 (020 3876 7676)

3 OKA, NW1

This pan-Asian and sushi eatery might be part of a small chain, but you wouldn’t know it, given its neighbourly vibe. The Primrose Hill site is loved by locals, such as Tamara Hall, who tells us: “the food is always fresh and delicious, and the staff friendly. There’s a huge menu choice but I’d recommend the sushi rolls in particular – they’re to die for.” We’d only add that OKA’s drinks offering is impressive, too. And the Primrose 71 cocktail (prosecco mixed with strawberry, cranberry and passion fruit) is an absolute must for local residents.

3. Dean Whitley Chancellors

“Primrose Hill is a delightful area. From the top of the hill you can enjoy the best view of the London skyline. Regent’s Park offers beautiful open spaces with a boating lake, ornamental gardens and an open air theatre, while breathtakingly beautiful Nash terraces line the outer circle, offering some of the most valuable and sought-after real estate in the world.”

FABRIC PROMOTION

Meet the

AGENT

Greenstone opened its doors in St. John’s Wood in 1995, Lewis Green, founder and director explains what makes the business special What makes Greenstone different? An exceptional work ethic and true dedication. I am proud to have successfully built up a well-regarded and prominent agency with a strong following of loyal, local clients. And I am still involved in the day-to-day running of the business 26 years later: I personally manage the office and oversee the team, ensuring that the high standards that Greenstone has become known for are upheld.

What’s next for Greenstone? Due to client demand, we’ve evolved… I’ve just launched Greenstone Prime, a division that has been set up purely to service the prime house market in the roads immediately adjacent to our office on Boundary Road – mainly Abbey Road, Carlton Hill, Clifton Hill, Springfield Road, Blenheim Road, Marlborough Place, and any other prime road on the west side of St. John’s Wood.

What sort of properties do you market? Greenstone has always been a traditional estate agency dealing with the sales, lettings and management of properties in the local area – everything from studio flats to detached houses. I believe that by not restricting the type of properties we deal with, we have been able to focus on really serving the local community, with equal motivation to deliver results whatever the size of property.

Greenstone Prime is run personally by Lewis, offering a service that can only come from his 30 years’ experience. This is combined with exciting and modern marketing campaigns, and up to the minute social media campaigns that offer an exceptionally far reach. To find out more, contact Lewis directly on his private line, 020 3780 0199, or email lewis@greenstone.com

What can clients expect when dealing with Greenstone? Attention to detail has always been key for me. Thanks to this, business is conducted smoothly and the systems we have in place have been perfected to ensure that anybody dealing with the office enjoys a great experience every time. I’m proud of my team, the company and the service I provide, and I’m continuing to build and grow the company with as much enthusiasm as when I first launched.

Schools WORDS by ALI HOWARD

MEET THE HEAD

James Stenning

THOUGHT

Urban living, countryside learning

North Bridge House Prep How would you sum up the school in a sentence? A school with kindness at its core, where children excel academically and engage in a wide range of extracurricular activities.

The developed world is increasingly urban, and it is undoubtedly the environment within which the vast majority of our young people will live and work at some point during their lives. This does not mean, however, that the city is necessarily the best context for their school days. Clean air and wide horizons all inform the young mind, while sports pitches within a stone’s throw of classrooms, and expansive countryside, provide endless opportunities for enrichment and physical, as well as mental wellbeing. James Wilton, Deputy Head at Repton School, believes that establishing a balance in all things enables young people to develop the self-confidence and skills to equip them for life beyond school. “We function at our best when everything interweaves – our excellence in sports helps build academic achievement, our sectorleading pastoral care underpins performance in every single arena of school life, our arts, drama and music forms rounded, culturally aware young adults ready to become global citizens. Repton’s rural setting enables us to provide a sense of balance in all things, not least because every teacher lives in the village, so pupils are not constrained by timetables – creativity, academia and sport all can and do happen

at any time.” Repton’s expansive campus is home to the school’s original 16th century buildings as well as a state-of-the-art Science Priory, art galleries, 320-seat theatre and sports centre, but Mr Wilton is in no doubt that outstanding teachers and coaches beat world-class facilities every time. He explains: “Our rural setting in the very heart of England enables us to deliver an unbounded education in a healthy environment; this is played out in the lived experiences as well as the achievements of our pupils.” Scout Butler boarded at Repton for five years and is preparing to go to Stanford University in California. She reveals why she chose Repton: “There was a more relaxed and welcoming atmosphere here than I experienced elsewhere, and geography never posed a problem. I regularly used the train to travel home to London and my parents visited to watch matches and to take me out at weekends. I was able to pursue hockey to the highest level, but I never had to compromise on my academic studies, which enabled me to set ambitious goals for my future.” repton.org.uk

What makes it stand out? From Year 5, pupils are taught entirely by subject specialists and individually prepared for their senior school entrance examinations. We work closely with families to choose the right school for each child, and are very proud to see so many of our pupils gain highly competitive scholarship places. All the teaching staff here are committed to developing the children’s individual talents wherever they may lie – in the orchestra, on the sports field, editing our school podcast, The North Point, or working as part of our community outreach group. Our children enjoy school and grow in character and confidence – succeeding not only academically, but developing a wide range of interests beyond the classroom. Can you tell us about the facilities? The building is a former convent and the Chapel sits centrally within the school – here, we gather for assemblies, eat lunch, perform, and even enjoy school discos! We have a suite of dedicated Science labs and have recently built an innovation suite, a purpose built drama studio and re-developed our two Art rooms. What are the advantages of a central London education? Many... Regent’s Park is our playground and home of sport, and we have developed a fantastic partnership with London Zoo. We also have a whole host of West End theatres and renowned museums on our doorstep. What are you looking forward to this new school year? The easing of Covid restrictions, which will allow us to resume a full programme of sporting fixtures, concerts and school trips. It will also mean that children from different bubbles will be able to play together again. 1 Gloucester Avenue, NW1 (020 7267 6266; northbridgehouse.com)

Market insight from our agents HOT PROPERTY

Holy in spirit In any period property purchase, original features are everything. But if you’re really devout about those characterful fixtures, how about a church conversion? On the market with Dexters is this glorious four-bed apartment – set within the former St. Peter’s Church, which was built in 1874, and still sits stately in north London’s trendy Dartmouth Park. If it’s high ceilings you’re after, forget that Edwardian terrace – the double heights here come complete with towering neo-Gothic stone columns and striking stained glass windows. And if you’re keen on curb-appeal, you’d beat the neighbours hands down with this beautifully maintained exterior. With all mod cons taken care of, too, and a considered floorplan for modern family living, the apartment is as practical as it is pretty. £1.3 million, Dexters (020 7284 0101; dexters.co.uk)

Where do you go for head space in the city? Hampstead Heath. There are still hidden corners. Best place to grab a coffee? The local deli at the end of my road, L’Angolo in Kensal Rise. The best coffee and Italian delicacies for miles, and a community hub for over 30 years. for little (and large) luxuries. Period property or new-build? Period with modern electrics, plumbing and bathrooms. (Although I wouldn’t say no to a Grand Design perched on a Cornish cliff).

A. “After working in and around Hampstead and Highgate for the last 20 years, I’ve seen a big connection between proximity to good schools and increased asking prices. We’re lucky as we have an abundance of great schools here, both private and state. Many of our clients have busy schedules and work long hours, which means they have more time with their families if they don’t have to commit to a long school run – and the quality of the school is incredibly important to them. We’ve seen that within a one-mile radius of the best schools in our area there’s a huge demand for family houses and flats, with prices approximately 10 per cent higher.”

Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? The South Bank Centre. As the largest cultural arts centre in Europe, I would be very sad to lose it. Also, I kind of like its hulking concreteness, giving a rebellious twos up to the more refined North Bank.

Area In Focus

Brook Green Taking its name from the recreational park that runs from Shepherds Bush to Hammersmith Road, Brook Green is an affluent neighbourhood within the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham bordered by Kensington and Holland Park. The area is known for its tree lined streets, Victorian town houses, mansion flats and some of the capital’s best schools including the dramatically famous St Paul’s Girls’; Bute House; and the Ecole Francais Jacques Prevert. Brook Green is easily commutable to the City yet has a village ambience with its acres of green space, Thames Path walks and Blyth Road coffee shops, cafes and elegant boutiques. This is a very upstanding and attractive place to call home.

Christoper Lilly

Our Brook Green Lettings Expert “I’ve been an estate and letting agent locally for 7 years’ says Christopher. I’d humbly call myself an expert on the local area, it’s unique selling points and on the latest market data – especially the current rental market which we’re finding extremely buoyant in Brook Green. Apart from facts and numbers however, the responsibility that I take most seriously is that of my client relationships. The property business to some is transactional, but to me it is all about building long lasting relationships with landlords, tenants, sellers and purchasers, one built on trust and genuinely great service. I am as likely to spend time with you debating price per square foot of a suitable home as I am which café to take your morning coffee in, or the best school to talk to about your child’s education. Much of the business I do is via recurring clients and from recommendation”. To contact Christopher, please visit our Brook Green branch or contact us via the below details.
