Kaleidoscope: A Celebration of Colour 9 September-10 October, Drian Gallery

This September sees Westminster City Council install a Green Plaque in honour of British painter Halima Nałęcz, who forged a path through the London art scene in the 1960s and went on to champion new and emerging artists for more than 40 years. The plaque will be unveiled on 7 September at Connaught Village’s 5 Porchester Place – the original site of Nałęcz’s renowned gallery, Drian.

To celebrate, a group exhibition featuring Michael Sandle RA, Andrew FlintShipman, Bokani Tshidzu, Christian Furr, Cindy Lass and David Begbie and more will take place at a modern day recreation of the art space, just down the road at number 14. Curated by art critic Robin Dutt, we’re promised “a unique tribute to a woman of insight and dedication, who nurtured so many artists.”

The Cosmic House From 24 September, Holland Park

House snoopers, look lively! This month, Charles Jencks’ iconic postmodernist home opens as a dedicated museum and archive space, offering an enriching programme of exhibitions, talks and residences. The late architectural historian and cultural theorist designed The Cosmic House with wife Maggie and architect Terry Farrell back in 1978. It remains one of the world’s most important examples of postmodern architecture and is the UK’s only Grade I listed post-war home. Artistic director Eszter Steierhoffer says: “The Jencks Foundation will become a new cultural hub in London. Its public programme will revolve around thematic seasons inspired by the Jencks Archive. It will foreground the hybrid connections between architecture and other disciplines, and invite artists, designers and researchers to experiment with the postmodern.”

Drawing on Style

15-26 September, Gray M.C.A London As the Capital welcomes Fashion Week, this is a suitably co-ordinating group show for the sartorial set.

Celebrating rare and unseen fashion illustrations from post-war 1940s to the present day, Drawing on Style promises a showcase of exquisite drawings by a host of contemporary illustrators.

Expect works from David Downton, whose original sketches from Drawing Carmen will be on display. The book was recently published to coincide with the 90th birthday of fashion icon Carmen Dell’Orefice. Alongside Downton will be Iranian artist Ali Mahdavi, who presents drawings for Jean Paul Gaultier; hugely influential fashion illustrator/journalist Gladys Perint Palmer; esteemed New Yorker Steven Stipelman, whose work will be available to buy for the first time; and modern-day Italian master Andrea Ferolla, who’s known for capturing the elegance and beauty in Italian society.

What it is to be human

ophie Cookson is feeling philosophical. “If you were going to revisit the earth, would you live in a hedonistic way, or would you actually try and do some good?” She asks me. “If we could live multiple lives, what would we choose to do? What would our impact on the world be? What decisions would we make? These are things that I think we are all thinking about: concerns like climate change make it feel almost like we are at a melting point.”

It is certainly not how I expected to begin the interview, but the subject is raised during a conversation about her latest project, an Antoine Fuqua action thriller for Paramount Studios called Infinite (the story has been adapted from Eric Marikranz’s book The Reincarnationist Papers by Ian Shorr). Mark Wahlberg plays the lead, Evan, a man who, struggling with his identity and his demons, becomes embroiled in the world of Cognomina, a secret society of people who possess total recall of their past lives.

Sophie plays opposite him as Nora, the group’s leader. Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rupert Friend and Dylan O’Brien also star. “I have always loved Fuqua’s films,” she tells me. “And to get to work with Mark… and even though I have no scenes with Chiwetel, that was really exciting, too. There were lots of pinch-me moments.”

“The thing that really drew me to it, though, is that it has a lot of heart,” she explains. “It deals with grief and loss. My character, Nora, has had to deal with living through multiple lives, realising who she is over and over again. So, she is having to deal with constant loss, and head a tribe, which makes her a very three-dimensional, rounded woman – I don’t think you often get those characters in that kind of genre.”

The film may have heart, but it has plenty of action, too, which was a new experience for Sophie. “I trained so hard,” she recalls. “I think that there is an assumption that when you do a film like this, you have four months training. It was very much not like that! I think I had about three weeks before we started shooting, so it was very rigorous. And doing lots of martial arts, weight training and weapon training – so, I was really thrown in at the deep end, but I loved it so much. And I had amazing stunt doubles as well, who were really supportive and taught me lots. And the stunt coordinator was also a woman, which really helped, because I had never been in that kind of environment before. It was so nice to have a really female centric team in what could have been quite a masculine environment.”

Has it spawned a new hobby? “Not necessarily the martial arts,” Sophie laughs, “that could definitely do with some improvement! But it has given me a sort of ethic around working out and looking after myself. It has been quite an inspiring fitness journey, which has been really nice, because I think I have a slightly love/hate relationship with it normally.”

Work on the film was finished at the end of 2019: “a lifetime ago,” Sophie remarks. Since then, there have been obvious delays getting it into cinemas.

“I think we have definitely had Covid issues – as has everyone in the film industry,” she explains. “And I think it is an interesting thing, when you have a deadline, you work towards that, and deadlines keep getting pushed, and I think when that happens, there can potentially be overthinking. And it is hard, everyone really struggled. But I’m just happy that it is out now, and that people are going to get to see it.”

Sophie won’t be among the audience, though. Watching her work is “far too anxiety-inducing,” she admits. The one exception to that being The Trial of Christine Keeler. Sophie played the lead role in the BBC’s 2019 Profumo affair dramatisation – the story of 19-year-old Christine Keeler, who found herself at the heart of a political sex scandal that rocked the government in the 1960s. “That, I really enjoyed watching back,” she reveals.

“I think because it was a real passion project. I felt very protective of it and what we had created, so that, I really did want to watch back.”

Written by BAFTA award-winning novelist and screenwriter Amanda Coe and directed by Andrea Harkin, both the six-part series, and Sophie’s role in it were critically acclaimed, so it is no surprise that she is proud of the project. “That felt like a really important moment,” she says. “Amanda had written the most sublime script, and it was one of those jobs where it just felt really important to tell the story. I think that’s when acting can be really exciting. You know, I was able to vindicate Christine, and I felt like I was really flying the flag for her. So, for me, that was a really important job, and I was involved in the script process, and had a really great relationship with all of the people that I worked with. But it was exhausting as well – I was in all day, every day doing these incredibly heart wrenching scenes, so it was a good exercise in stamina. And, as well, leading a show for the first time.”

The series was certainly a high point, though Sophie’s star was already on its ascent. Fresh out of drama school, she beat hundreds of other hopefuls to win the female lead opposite Taron Egerton in Matthew Vaughn’s 2014 film Kingsman: The Secret Service. I ask how the role came about and Sophie recalls putting together a self-tape while working away from home on another project. “I remember filming it in a really dark Dublin hotel room, on a really wonky camera, and I remember thinking that it was one of those tapes you get that you are never going to hear anything about,” she tells me. “And then I got called back in. And I kept getting called back in, and eventually I met Matthew and did a chemistry read with Taron, and the whole thing is absolutely dreamlike when I think about it. I was so, so,

so lucky. It was really, right time, right place. It just felt like this beautiful serendipity. And it was really thrilling, but incredibly daunting. I think it helped that I had never been on a large-scale film set like that before, so I didn’t know what to expect, and I just took it as it came. Looking back on it now, it is definitely slightly blurry,” she laughs.

Sophie tells me that she will be forever grateful for that rare opportunity; it saw her named as a Screen International Star of Tomorrow and has undoubtedly opened doors for her in the industry since. “I think working with Matthew off the bat, straight out of drama school was amazing, because he is so good at championing unknown talent. And he is very supportive, he has helped me a few times since, so I feel very lucky to have that backing,” she says.

Consequently, with each carefully chosen role, Sophie has continued to establish herself as an international acting talent to watch. But, like many in her industry, she hasn’t worked much recently – though in Sophie’s case, this has nothing whatsoever to do with the pandemic. “I’ve been pregnant, and I have had a baby. Which is work, I have to say. It made actual work seem like a breeze,” she laughs. “I am just about to start work next week, and I am chomping at the bit to do so. Having a baby is the most beautiful, rewarding experience, but I think you just miss that facet of your personality. I think women sometimes feel guilt or shame around wanting to get back to work, and stepping away from being a full-time mum, and I think that is definitely something I will experience. I am sure there will be moments when I think, God, I wish I was with my child. But working is a fundamental part of my personality, and something that I love doing, and I have really, really missed it. I am so nervous, but so excited,” she reveals.

Those emotions encompass so much more than simply feeling a little rusty: Covid has changed the world since Sophie has been on maternity leave, and she is prepared for things to be a little different on set. “There are lots of hoops to jump through before you even get to the studio,” she reveals. “Which is good, because I think that we are far from out of the woods where that is concerned. I’m sure that it will be a slightly different experience, but the industry was halted for so long that people will do anything to keep it going.”

It is a discussion that leads us to the extended theatre closures; Sophie is, understandably, thrilled that things are now opening up. “I am going for the first time on Friday, and I am so excited; I can’t quite imagine what it is going to be like,” she grins. “It’s called Hymn, and it is at The Almeida, with Adrian

Lester, and I know nothing about it, which I am really excited about! I love going to see something, not reading anything about it, and just turning up with a totally blank canvas.”

While being in the audience will do for now, she is waiting for the right opportunity to get back on stage herself. In 2018 she made her stage debut in Killer Joe, playing opposite Orlando Bloom in the West End revival of the blackly comic thriller, which focuses on a family who hatch a get-richquick scheme to murder their estranged mother for insurance money.

“When I was doing it I was just bouncing off the walls the whole time with adrenaline,” she recalls. “It is energy depleting, but also gives you an incredible buzz – that strange magic that happens in the air between the audience and the performer. It is intangible. Yes, magic, and I love it.”

Though the skillset is fundamentally the same, the experience of theatre is very different to film, Sophie explains. “I love that solidarity that comes from theatre. For example, on Infinite, I passed Chiwetel in the corridor, whereas if we were doing Infinite the Musical or something,” she laughs, “we would have all had time together, and we would’ve got to share the weight of the story and discuss what we thought it was about. And I think that is a very exciting thing – being in a rehearsal room.”

Aside from getting back to work, I wonder what else she is excited for as the world reopens. “Gosh, aren’t we all excited for everything?” She exclaims. “It is the longest time I have ever been in one place; I think. I had a week in Cornwall last week, which was absolute bliss.” Of course, being in one place is tolerable when that place just happens to be on the doorstep of Hampstead Heath. “I love being near the Heath, I find it incredibly freeing,” she tells me. “I am fortunate in that I am not too long a stroll away from it. Going up there first thing in the morning when it is really foggy, and the city is just emerging through the clouds, I love that. And I love that you really feel the weather there – living in a city, you can be quite sheltered and protected from the elements, whereas the Heath feels very raw. I grew up in the countryside, and I think I probably am a country girl at heart, but on the Heath, if you just squint your eyes, you can imagine you are in a nice meadow somewhere. It is gorgeous. I love it on a windy day like today, because it just has such personality. I feel like I know every blade of grass on the Heath after the pandemic, but I still absolutely adore it.” Perhaps the perfect spot to sit and reflect on what it is to be human?

by Suzanne Martin I don’t think I have ever been as closely scrutinised as when I first meet Suzanne Martin. As we chat, she studies my face in detail. She is easy company, so it doesn’t feel uncomfortable. As we talk, she takes pictures and makes measurements; hers is an exact art.

A former make up artist working with Christian Dior, Suzanne has now trained as an aesthetician, and her brilliant work with semi-permanent make up, specifically brows, has garnered her a following of devoted fans. Among them, A-listers, who travel from far and wide to see her in the discreet surroundings of The Lanesborough’s exclusive spa.

Suzanne uses a brow pencil to draw on her desired shape, plucking away stray hairs, before applying local anaesthetic cream and setting to work crafting the ultimate brow to frame my eyes and balance my face. She uses individual strokes, blending bespoke colours from a selection of mineral pigments and using micro needles to achieve varying weights of line. No two faces are the same, and no face is symmetrical, she explains, so it is important that brows shouldn’t look templated. The process is painless, with just a few moments of mild discomfort as Suzanne initially breaks the skin. It takes around an hour.

The immediate results are striking – my new brows are darker than they will eventually look, but I am thrilled with them. One of my eyebrows naturally droops, giving me a perma-melancholy expression, but Suzanne has lifted it to meet the arch of the other. Both are longer and a little fuller and darker. It makes my eyes stand out and my expression look immediately brighter.

I’m back in the calm luxury of The Lanesborough a month later for phase two.

This, Suzanne tells me, is when the real magic happens. It’s an opportunity for her to go over her work, checking that the shape and the shade are perfect. The process is exactly as before, and Suzanne takes pictures and measures as she goes.

The results are indeed magical, and will last for a year, when I’ll be back for a top up. I look younger, and the shape of my face appears subtly changed.

And I love waking up in the morning, ready to go.

Dinner with a difference This month, modern Indian restaurant Kricket announces the return of their popular Guest Chef Series at the White City restaurant. Every Tuesday in September, head chef Will Bowlby will be joined in the kitchen by a different chef. Guests at each of the special evenings will be welcomed with a cocktail, before tucking into a threecourse, collaboratively-designed sharing menu – each dish showcasing the guest chef’s unique cooking style alongside Will’s approach to Indian food. Priced at £55 per head, all profits are being donated to long-term charity partner Apne Aap Women’s Collective. The anti-trafficking organisation serves the women and children of the red-light district in Mumbai, an area that has been acutely affected by the events of the last year. In Tokyo, I had a really memorable meal at a three-star Michelin restaurant called Kanda. It was as much about the food as it was the experience. I was by myself, and it was really hard to find, set in the middle of a housing estate – I couldn’t read Japanese so I had no idea where I was going. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I turned up, but I was completely blown away.

If you could cook for anyone, who would it be?

My dad. He is the reason I got into being a chef when I was younger. When my brothers

and I cook for him it gives him so much enjoyment.

That Hakkasan is 20 years old seems inconceivable and makes me feel uncomfortably old. I remember as though it were yesterday being taken to the restaurant on Hanway Place by my then editor, shortly after it opened. She wanted to distract me from the fact that she could offer me neither a pay rise nor a permanent contract, and it worked. I thought the buzzy underground space was achingly cool and I was blown away by the exquisite Cantonese food, vowing to go back as soon as my salary allowed – an ambition I had to put on ice for several years. When the day finally came, it was exactly as I remembered. Since then, the Michelin-starred restaurant has remained a favoured spot for celebrations and special meals, even serving us with a very welcome anniversary takeaway during the lockdown. So, of course, I’m keen to honour its own special birthday, too; the team have designed a limited edition set menu that does just that. Featuring dishes first introduced on Hanway Place’s menu in 2001 as well as newer favourites, the tasting menu showcases Hakkasan’s impressive journey.

As we descend the staircase into the buzzy restaurant everything feels gloriously, glamorously normal, and wonderfully removed from the worries of the last year. We are greeted with a celebratory cocktail, the Hakkatini. It is a mix of orange infused Belvedere vodka, apple, Campari, Grand Marnier and orange cream bitters, and goes straight to my head in the very best way. As we sip, we sample the trio of dim sum (scallop, langoustine and chicken with abalone). Tiny, exquisite mouthfuls, they are almost too beautiful to eat. There is also a steamed scallop, served in its shell with brown-butter black bean sauce, on a bed of rice vermicelli noodles, topped with a delicate shallot and shrimp tuille.

Appetites truly whet, we move on to the mains. The oatmeal Dover sole – served with osmanthus jelly and garlic herb puree – is a sight to behold, garnished with the skeleton deep fried as a crunchy edible accompaniment. Indeed, the seafood is the star: meaty braised lobster comes atop egg noodles and is served with delicious lobster wontons. Which isn’t to say that we don’t lick the plate clean when the stir-fry black pepper rib eye beef with Merlot arrives – playfully presented, it sits on a nest of crispy noodles.

Dessert is caramelised chocolate cream with plum and raspberry jelly and sake vanilla foam and is well worth saving space for. Delicately flavoured, it rounds off the meal perfectly.

INGREDIENTS For the rough-puff pastry 250g plain flour | 250g unsalted butter, firm but not chilled (remove from the fridge 2 hours before use) | 1 tsp salt | 125ml iced water

a large bowl and make a well in the middle.

Dice the butter and add to the centre of the well with the salt.

G radually mix the ingredients together with your fingertips. When the cubes of butter have become very small and the mixture resembles rubble (you should still be able to see some small chunks of butter), add a little of the iced water and mix together. Continue adding the water slowly until you have a firm dough (you may not need all the water). Mix until combined, but do not be tempted to knead.

P lace the dough onto a lightly floured surface and roll into a 30 x 30cm square. Fold into thirds, as if folding a letter, to make three layers. Turn vertically through 180 degrees, roll to flatten and then fold again. Turn again through 180 degrees and repeat. Chill the pastry for 20 minutes, then roll and fold the pastry twice more as above. Keep in the fridge until needed.

P reheat the oven to 180°C. T o make the caramel, place the sugar in a heavy-bottomed oven-safe 28cm frying pan and cook over a medium–low heat, not stirring, for around 10 minutes, or until it has melted and starts to bubble (you may find it helpful to gently swirl the pan once or twice towards the end). Remove from the heat and carefully add the butter, whisking constantly until combined. If it splits, put it back over a low heat and whisk continuously until it comes together. Arrange the pears, core side up, in a circle around the pan.

R oll out the pastry into a circle large enough to cover the pears and place gently over the top, pushing down the pastry around the sides.

Make a hole in the middle and brush with the egg white.

B ake for 30–40 minutes until golden brown, then remove from the oven and allow to cool for at least 10 minutes, as the caramel will be piping hot and can easily burn.

T o remove the tart from the pan, place a large plate on top of the pan, then, with both hands, squeeze the plate and pan together and flip over in one quick movement.

T his moves the pastry to the bottom and reveals the pears, now beautifully caramelised.

Sprinkle with the walnuts and serve with the crème fraîche.

For the tart 150g caster sugar | 100g unsalted butter, cubed | 3 ripe pears, peeled and cored and cut in half vertically | 1 large egg white | A handful of walnuts, toasted | 200ml crème fraîche, to serve

Ahead of its time when it was built in 1779, Bodmin Jail boasted individual cells, hot water and light and airy areas for prisoners to live and work. Lose yourself in boutique luxury at the Kings Arms Hotel in London’s Hampton Court WORDS by PENNY CLEMENTS

Just a short hop upstream from central London, Hampton boasts charm and historic appeal.

Not to mention being home to Hampton Court Palace – once home to Henry VIII and his many wives.

Hankering after a change of scenery, it seems the perfect spot for a last minute holiday.

Our base for exploring is The Kings Arms Hotel – a Grade II listed 18th century former inn, now contemporary-chic hotel and restaurant. It occupies a dream spot, right beside the Palace’s Lion Gate, backing onto the famous maze (the UK’s oldest surviving hedge maze, no less) and opposite the entrance to Bushy Park.

Inside is welcoming and cosy.

Old-world charm and contemporary décor merge seamlessly at this boutique hotel. The lobby is bright and airy, with a mosaic tiled floor, bespoke artwork and large light emitting windows. Equally impressive is the restaurant and bar, The SIX, which is named after the aforementioned royal wives. It is tastefully decorated with royal blue

banquette seating, gold light fixtures and ample green foliage.

Varying in size and shape, each of the 14 rooms has been individually decorated in a luxuriously muted colour palette. Expect large sleepinducing beds, original artworks and plenty of home comforts with all the mod cons: TV, coffee machine, locally-sourced toiletries, soft fluffy towels and robes, a well-stocked minibar and complimentary wine and biscuits. We are staying on the first floor, in a room that boasts views over the beautiful park. Smokey greys and warming dusky pinks are carried from the plush fabrics right through to the handmade tiles used in the rain shower. Large, draped, botanicalprinted curtains frame the view, and the secondary glazing in our front-facing room ensures we are completely cut off from comings and goings outside.

Keen to work up an appetite for our Sunday roast, after making ourselves comfortable, we head out for a stroll around Bushy Park. At over 1,000 acres, it is the second-largest of London’s eight Royal Parks; we wander through the peaceful Woodland Gardens and admire the freely roaming deer.

Back at the hotel, it is time to eat. The SIX serves an eclectic, seasonal British menu that uses the highest-quality local produce (with vegetables picked straight from the

Palace’s kitchen garden). Food has been curated by Michelin-starred chef Mark Kempson and the kitchen is run by head chef Jack Scoines and his talented team. I tuck into a delicious plate of roasted pork belly and roasties cooked in dripping, which come accompanied by a scrumpy chutney, glazed vegetables and a healthy serving of orchard pig cider gravy. My partner, meanwhile, chooses 31-day aged roast sirloin of Angus beef with all the trimmings.

Both are delicious, and feel very much like the sort of thing the staff in the Palace kitchens might have produced for a royal feast. Full to almost bursting, we opt to share the bee pollen and vanilla pannacotta with Champagne strawberries and raspberry sorbet. We’re glad we did, as it is utterly divine. We wash our meal down with Hampton Court’s award-winning small batch handcrafted botanical gin, The Six Wives, and a few pints of locally-brewed Wimbledon Ale.

That evening, feeling incredibly satisfied, we retreat upstairs to our room. Snuggled into the comfiest of queen-sized beds, with the thick curtains drawn, we are set up for the deepest sleep we’ve enjoyed in months.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, we’re still quite full when we arrive for breakfast the next morning, but the offer of the rare treat of cooked breakfast proves too hard to turn down. A jaunt around Hampton Court Palace is on the itinerary, and we enjoy a wonderful sunny day, full of adventure and fun.

The Kings Arms Hotel has proven to be a real jewel in the Capital’s crown and we very much hope to be back again soon.

his September sees LDF return triumphantly for its 19th edition.

The focus? Creative and cultural activity to re-ignite the Capital and kick-start London’s economy.

These may sound like ambitious aims, but given the festival’s history, we’re in no doubt they’re doable. Since its relatively humble beginnings in 2003, the London Design Festival has played host to leading global practitioners, thinkers, and educators. It has showcased the city’s creative brilliance, and ultimately, anchored London as the design capital of the world. For LDF chairman Sir John Sorrell CBE, this year’s event holds more significance than ever. “London has some of the world’s greatest designers living and working here, who come from all over and make this city their home,” he says. “Over the years, this has enabled us to develop exciting programmes which showcase both design’s joyous side, but also the ideas and innovations with the capacity to shape our societies. We hope that this year’s festival will not only be seen by those in London, but audiences all around the world, and that we’re able to demonstrate that design will be at the heart of the future.”

This interior architect’s raison d’être is curated interiors that tell a story.

“I call it ‘maximalist expressions in minimalist details’,” says Enis assuredly, when asked to describe his interiors style. For him, a clear creative vision is what’s needed to pull off a property like this one, with its chic monochrome décor and dark drama. “It’s a narrative based on experiments with contrasts,” he explains, “creating a harmonious balance between fantasy and reality, reconnecting the past and present, using Eastern and Western elements to design spaces with a heritage feel... I think I am a curator as well as an architect, and my strength is to bring things together.”

Having studied and worked in London, Enis returned to his home town of Istanbul in 2015.

Here, he co-founded Sanayi313, a concept store, kitchen, and architecture studio with his brother Amir. But London will always be Enis’ adopted

home, such is his affection for the city, and he’s glad to have set down roots here, too. “London is one of the most inspiring cities in the world,” he says. “A multicultural city that has everything – restaurants and shops from all around the world, galleries, workshops, museums and theatres... In London, you always find something to do. Istanbul is inspiring in its own special way. It’s a city where you feel the East-meetsWest sentiment at its most intense. It used to be a much more vibrant city, booming with creativity, but let’s say that’s been put on hold for a while. Both cities have pros and cons, and I love them both. Istanbul has a better climate, that’s for sure!”

The Notting Hill apartment is a spacious two-bed, two-storey affair that sits on a narrow footprint but benefits from oodles of natural

light, thanks to its grand floor-to-ceiling arched windows both front and back. Built in the early 1900s, the flat boasts double height ceilings, a beautiful terrace, and plenty of original Victorian features, which Enis loves. “Buildings tell stories,” he says. “Character is all that matters. When I bought this property, I tried to understand the culture of the house first and built everything around it, making sure that with everything I added, the house remained true to its character.”

While the bones of the property remained largely untouched, Enis opened up the kitchen space into the living room, installed an all stainless-steel custom-built kitchen and, ingeniously, designed a mobile ladder to provide access to the extra storage space above the ceiling. He also replaced the staircase connecting the two floors with a cast iron spiral staircase, bought from an antiques dealer. Along with a taxidermy crow perched mid-squawk on a black top hat, and a statement umbrella stand fashioned from antlers, the lacy black staircase is entirely in fitting with the apartment’s theatrical noir aesthetic.

“The black and white scheme is kind of a signature for me,” he explains, “and I wanted it to come to life by mixing in natural materials with character so that they contrast with each other.

It was a deliberate choice to use materials with strong textures but not-so-dominant colours.”

Flitting between the two cities, Enis imagined his London pad to be a home from home, and he wanted the end result to have a lived-in feel.

While much of the designer’s interiors choices are starkly elegant – gothic even – the apartment is never not homely. A huge and inviting Arflex leather couch by Umberto Asnago and an antique pony skin club chair from Nicole Farhi Home await him on his returns from Istanbul, as does his favourite painting above the fireplace. “It’s the most treasured item in this house,” he says.

“It’s a portrait of my aunt, showing her at a ball in Brazil.” He’s also named some of his favourite pieces in the flat, like pets. The taxidermy crow goes under the moniker of Hitchcock, naturally, and the statue in the living room, which Enis tops with an original, signed Ottoman fez, is called Esteban. The scarlet hat is a rare colour pop.

You don’t have to be a sharp-eyed magpie to spot the architect’s collection of shiny coffee pots.

and takes up an entire built-in bookcase that reaches all the way up to the ornate cornicing.

“I’ve collected them from antique shops around the world,” he says. “It started with one and turned into quite an impressive collection over the years. I love collecting things with a history, or story, and enjoy seeing extravagant collections in minimal settings.” True to Enis’ design philosophy, the pots are displayed in a creative fashion, meticulously lined up, handles pointed outwards. The collection becomes a sculptural artwork in its own right. “In terms of interiors, repetition sometimes generates very good results,” he offers. “When the repetition comes from such a collection, which is a personal thing, it adds so much character to the interior as a reflection of its owner. Then you know that it’s not solely about the décor, but the lifestyle.”

Enis deftly mixes chic contemporary pieces, such as his collection of Fornasetti wall plates in the kitchen (again displayed in a creative and considered fashion), with wonderfully raw and rustic finds – perhaps the most impressive being the apartment’s reclaimed wood flooring, which he obtained from an old tobacco factory. “But the overall result is not rustic,” he is keen to point out.

“It’s a balance of old and new, rustic and modern – timeless really, just like the house’s own features.”

In keeping much of the furniture simple and casual, and instead toying with the details, Enis is able to easily update the property whenever he chooses. While he has his favourite go-to brands, some of the furnishings, such as the dining table with the glass top, and the box stools around it, are his own designs.

So what’s next on the cards for this interior architect with an international outlook?

“There’s this sculpture park which is being built on Turkey’s Black Sea border,” says Enis.

“The project consists of a glass building, an old stone building, and a completely preserved old stable… We are also working on a vineyard house project in Bozcaada, which consists of stone structures that are totally in tune with nature.

And then there’s this beach house project in Miami, which is a work in progress. So we are quite busy!” It’s little wonder Enis will be putting his feet up in his beloved “weekend home” in Notting Hill whenever he gets the chance.

Can you tell us about some of your most unexpected sales?

Well, this year has definitely shown some extraordinary results. Of note, an extensive Royal Copenhagen Flora Danica dinner service estimated at £20,000-£30,000 sold under the hammer for a record-breaking £55,000.

On another occasion, we had a wonderful French cabinet signed by Joseph-Emmanuel Zwiener for Jansen of Paris, which was offered for sale through Sworders with an original estimate of £8,000-£12,000, but went on to sell for a hammer price of £24,000. Of course, it’s all about finding and identifying the real hidden treasures and knowing the best way to sell them – specialist knowledge can make all the difference when it comes to achieving the best price.

Selecting senior schools

Planning the next stage in your child’s education needn’t be stressful, says Richard Berlie, Headmaster at St. Anthony’s School for Boys

S

t. Anthony’s School for Boys is an ISI Excellent school in Hampstead, where academic endeavour is nurtured in a safe, familiar community. Thanks to the school’s unique ethos, from the time when they start at the school in Reception, all the way through to when they leave at the end of Year 6 or Year 8, every boy is recognised as an individual, with their own personal talents and interests.

A rigorous academic curriculum, overseen by the Heads of Faculty, has been put in place to foster inquiry and build knowledge and understanding. Furthermore, a huge array of co-curricular activities – including drama, music-making, singing, art, debating, coding

For some boys a highly competitive and academic environment is just the ticket; for others, who are no less bright academically, a more nurturing, less-imposing institution will be more appropriate.”

the laboratory, or, perhaps most important of all, having felt welcomed and looked after by their hosts,” he says. “There is no exact science behind a decision to apply to a particular school and it can be counter-productive to over think the process. Trusting one’s instincts, and those of the child himself does require a leap of faith, but at St. Anthony’s we can help parents to reach informed decisions.”

St. Anthony’s advise their families to apply for around six schools, including some

competitive options alongside ‘safer’ choices.

Boys going through the 11+ process will be judged on their performance on the day they sit their entrance exams. This is very much a data driven process, with perhaps only the top third of candidates making it through to interview.

The 13+ process is more nuanced, with schools paying a little more attention to factors such as co-curricular involvement. Not surprisingly, many parents hedge their bets and apply for a mix of 11+ and 13+ schools.

The school offers comprehensive support to boys preparing for senior school entrance tests.

This coming academic year, all Year 6 boys will be allocated an individual laptop that will assist in their preparation for reasoning tests, as well as helping with digital learning in general.

A detailed ‘Guide to Senior Schools’ is updated each year and shared with Year 5 families, and meetings are scheduled to explain the process, dispel myths and steady nerves. Individual interview practice is also arranged for boys.

“At St. Anthony’s, the individual child is at the centre of our mission, and this informs the bespoke approach we take to senior school applications, and our wider philosophy of education,” Richard says.

In search of the right school Katherine Vintiner, headteacher at Heathside School Hampstead highlights what to look for when choosing a Prep school

With so many different factors to consider, finding the right Prep school can feel like a daunting prospect. Co-ed or single sex, traditional or progressive, local or a commute away? What about class size, exam results and destination senior schools?

With careful research, these defined factors and measurable results are usually relatively easy to understand and enable parents to make a shortlist of preferred schools.

However, it doesn’t end there.

Head or heart?

Choosing a school takes more than just using your head, and my advice to parents is to use your heart, too. Think about how a school feels, it’s a deeply personal choice, with no correct answer. Call it a feeling, culture or ethos, it’s this element that really defines whether a school provides the right fit for your child, and it can only be discovered by visiting in person. With restrictions lifted, good schools will welcome visitors and be glad to show parents

around, so they gain a genuine sense of how the children are looked after and the atmosphere of every class.

By meeting senior leaders, preferably the headteacher, and spending time talking to staff, whatever their role, you’ll get a real feel for how a school is run.

Ask yourself whether your child would feel comfortable here, whether your family would fit in, and whether you can see yourself becoming part of the fabric of the school.

The final questions to ask are: do you have confidence that the school will bring out the very best in your child? Will it understand their individuality, their learning style and, in the true definition of education, bring forth what is within?

Keeping childhood special A broad curriculum, a stimulating range of clubs and excellent pastoral care are all expected at a good Prep school. So, what else can a school provide that makes it stand out? At Heathside, spending time on Hampstead Heath is a central part of our school.

Primrose Hill is a unique neighbourhood that is easy to fall in love with. It has a relaxed village feel and a friendly community, yet it’s only minutes away from the heart of central London. My husband was born here, and we live in his family house with our three children.

I start the day practising yoga – usually the Yoga in Bed or Sun Salutation sequences from my book, Nurturing Your Family With Yoga. Then I get a coffee from local grocers Melrose & Morgan and head out to walk our puppy. We’re lucky to be surrounded by green spaces, including Primrose Hill, with its unforgettable view of London’s skyline, and Regent’s Park, which houses the famous London Zoo, the magical Open Air Theatre, a tennis club and Queen Mary’s Rose Garden.

Back home, it’s time to wake up my children and get them off to their school, which borders the woodlands and meadows of Hampstead Heath. This is another dog walking heaven, where you feel you’re in the middle of the countryside despite the proximity of the city. Locally, we have a huge choice of schools, both state and private, and a vast range of activities for children, including crafts at Sew Much Fun and dance at Primrose Hill Ballet School.

I spend the day teaching yoga in the peaceful, light-filled studio my architect husband designed on the top floor of our house. As a trained doctor, I use this ancient discipline to improve the lives of people with medical conditions and stress-related issues. After 18 months of teaching online, I’m looking forward to welcoming my clients back to the studio. I also teach in local schools and am passionate about empowering children and improving their mental and physical health with the gift of yoga.

In between teaching yoga classes, I pop out to the thriving independent shops right on my doorstep. Some of my favourites are Yeomans for fresh fruit and flowers, 50s-style Reenie’s for homemade ice cream, Primrose Bakery for cupcakes, OKA for sushi and Primrose Hill Books for truly inspiring reading matter. Primrose Hill is also home to creative, independent brands, such as Boujo Hake, who make beautiful underwear and luxury basics.

After school we often meet friends for a picnic in Chalcot Square. This was the location for the Paddington movies, and, with its pastel-coloured townhouses, it is one of the prettiest parts of London.

I know I’ll sleep well in quiet and safe Primrose Hill.

I’m grateful to live and work in this very special place and to bring my children up here.

This pan-Asian and sushi eatery might be part of a small chain, but you wouldn’t know it, given its neighbourly vibe. There’s a huge menu choice but I’d recommend the sushi rolls in particular – they’re to die for.” We’d only add that OKA’s drinks offering is impressive, too. And the Primrose 71 cocktail (prosecco mixed with strawberry, cranberry and passion fruit) is an absolute must for local residents.
