My Night With Reg

DONMAR WAREHOUSE, WC2 This ground-breaking comedy (would we expect anything less from the Donmar?) originally came out of the Royal Court in 1994 before transferring to the West End. Set amongst the Capital’s gay community in the mid 1980s, the play follows the lives of a circle of friends whose world is about to change forever. With the creeping menace of the mounting AIDS crisis very much in the foreground, Kevin Elyot’s award-winning work was heralded an instant classic then and was said to define the lives of many of London’s gay men. 20 years on, and in the hands of rising star director Robert Hastie, the play is about to see its first major revival. MALL GALLERIES, SW1 Could still life in fact be as old as art itself? It certainly has a history. The ancient Egyptians understood the importance of it, painting vast feasts of foodstuffs – an offering to the gods – inside sacred temples and tombs. And as a discipline, it has definitely endured: we all remember those year nine art lessons spent studying a cheese plant or an ageing bowl of fruit in meticulous detail, recreating shape and form as true to life as our artistic abilities allowed (not very, if we’re being perfectly honest). But what of the art form today? Marking the quiet influence of the inanimate, this group exhibition is an eye-catching survey of contemporary still life painting by members, old and new, of the Federation of British Artists. In over 50 works of art, you’ll see the traditional flowers and fruit alongside uncommon studies of crumpled curtains, say, pub food or party shoes; conventional techniques hang next to mixed media pieces; watercolours beside Technicolor. National Youth String Orchestra

KINGS PLACE, N1 A chance to see the very best of the country’s string-bowing wunderkinds in action, the National Youth String Orchestra is coming to Kings Place for a very special one-off concert this August. The NYSO is the UK’s most prestigious training ground for young performers aged nine to 21, and it’s not difficult to see (or indeed hear) why. In the capable hands of musical director and conductor David Iorio, this promises to be an enthralling evening of youthful exuberance as the school’s seniors take on Holst’s St. Paul’s Suite, Walton’s Sonata for String Orchestra and Dvorák’s Serenade for Strings. THE SOHO THEATRE, W1 Adding a fair whack of prohibition-era glitz to Verdi’s best-loved opera, this English version promises parties, cocktails, heartache, and despair, making it as accessible as it is visually – and aurally – alluring. Having previously wowed us with Don Giovanni and La bohème, the Olivier Award-winning OperaUpClose, together with director and translator Robin Norton-Hale, is making a very welcome return to the Soho Theatre this month. The tale of Violetta, the ‘fallen woman’ who sacrifices her own happiness for the sake of her lover’s family and future, takes place in a ’20s underworld of speakeasies and bootlegging, revealing the hypocrisy behind the glittering façade. “A dog may be man’s best friend, but the horse wrote history.” So penned an anonymous wise one about the significance of our other loyal companion. Honouring 2014’s beast of the Chinese zodiac, this charming exhibition looks at our obsession with the equestrian, from the working horse – see Roy Wright’s Shire Horse Grazing – to the otherworldly and mythological – Katherine Virgils’ Bronze Flying Filly and Rebecca Jewell’s Pegasus. The works capture the majesty of the horse in very different ways, proving there’s something ultimately inherent about our love of the faithful steed. You don’t have to be a highly horsey person to appreciate that, but if you are, this exhibition is a must-see. Teenage Kicks

BFI SOUTHBANK, SE1 “Dear Diary… This isn’t just a spoke in my menstrual cycle!” Amongst an irresistible line up of movies celebrating the teen on screen, the eminently quotable Heathers will be on at the BFI this month. School is categorically not out for summer with the likes of Carrie, If… and Fast Times at Ridgemont High hitting the big screen again for a seriously nostalgic high school angstfest. The month-long bill also features the London premiere of Charlie Lyne’s Beyond Clueless, with a live score by indie duo Summer Camp. The documentary explores the US teen in all their awkward brilliance, taking in cheerleaders, jocks, freaks and geeks. Rextail giveaway After deciding to expand his empire outside of his home country back in 2008, Russian restaurant mogul Arkady Novikov has been making his glamorous mark in the moneyed enclaves of London. His eponymous Mayfair restaurant has been serving fine Asian and Italian fare to hungry high-rollers since 2011, while Brompton Asian Brasserie – opened in 2013 – is awash with Knightsbridge scenesters after a more accessible affair. Speedflex “Am I,” I think, sweating my way through another excruciating 45 minutes of swearing, squatting, and struggling to swear and squat simultaneously, “the only person who can still see the Emperor’s bare bum?” Except, of course, I don’t think that; I mostly think “oww, bloody oww”. But there clearly is something about Speedflex that others see that I do not. Since starting classes two weeks before, I’d heard it called addictive more times than I’d ‘Military Pressed’ (far, far too many), compared to crack, even, and had countless fit ’flex fans eagerly ask me whether I was hooked yet. “No,” I’d spit, furiously applying another

layer of foundation to my so-red-it’s-actuallypurple face, “I am definitely not hooked.” A desk-bound, over-indulger whose exercise regime is ideally restricted to the five minutes at the end of yoga where you get to lie down, a super-high-intensity interval training session was always going to be unpleasant. And yet I kept coming back. Why? Maybe it’s because after a sit down and a cold shower, I recover enough to get that smug, endorphiny thing you read about. Maybe it’s because the low impact, what-you-push-up, youmust-pull-down method means you experience none of the day after muscle cripple. Or maybe it’s because I’m burning 750 calories per class.

Yes, 750 calories in a 45-minute session. Apparently, this wizardry is, in fact, a canny bit of science. Circuit classes combine cardio and resistance training, centred on seven weight-free, hydrolic machines which move only when pushed or pulled, and resist with only as much force as you put in. This prevents muscle tearing, strengthens instead of bulking and means anyone, from pensioners to pro footballers, can do it. And when they do, they can expect to “lose body fat, lower blood pressure, increase strength, power, speed, flexibility and endurance, and improve circulation, lung capacity and bone density.” Strapped up to a heart monitor, following an extensive medical exam, a studio screen displays your heart rate and progress in an oddly non-embarrassing way. Actually, the whole thing’s surprisingly not embarrassing, slotted as you are between athletes and OAPs, all working at their own pace. Of course, the trainers help – being exceptionally motivating in a refreshingly non-terrifying, non-army kind of way. The music is far better than most classes of its ilk, too, and small sizes mean coordinationallychallenged people like me are easily attended to. And with breakfast, lunch and evening sessions, you can do it three times a day if you really want. Six, even. (I very much do not.) Six weeks later, I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I’ve signed up for more. I’m sweating as much, but certainly swearing less – I miss a class, I’m annoyed. My fitness is up; my waistline is on the wane. It’s not just the Emperor who’s looking good in his new threads; it might be me, too. Pavilion There are very few places better placed than High Street Ken to suggest that people just don’t go to work anymore. Less touristy than Knightsbridge, the leisurely shoppers and ladies-who-lunch in this blissful alternate universe aren’t holidayers, but thorough-London-breds. So I guess the office is simply out? Perhaps it’s because Kensington is pioneering a new kind of working life. Pavilion is a members’ club offering swish office space on top of its all-hours terrace and lounges. What’s more, workers can now order ‘room service’ to their desks from the new, public Pavilion restaurant. Which, incidentally, is why I’m here, on a Thursday afternoon: to be a lady who lunches. It’s all a bit blimmin’ decadent, frankly. And the decadence doesn’t end with bunking off. Firstly, it looks great. Through the entrance-cum-florist, past a deli counter (head chef Adam Simmonds is all about 52 | WWW.FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

fresher-than-fresh, made-in-house produce, though the florist is beyond me) and you reach a big, beautiful, shiny Champagne bar flanked by sanguine mustard stools and an air of Art Deco loveliness. It’s all very smart. So, too, is the food. Michelin-starred Simmonds serves up a stylish seasonal menu of modern Brit/French fare with an emphasis on intense flavours. I start with scallop ceviche with vanilla and chamomile. It has got intense flavours which are, on balance, a bit on the vanilla-y side for me. My demon orderer of a lunch date has, on the other hand, cracked it. I’m half tempted to fake a celebrity sighting or alien landing and snaffle the rest of her pork belly with langoustine, black pudding and crispy little bits of lardo. Luckily, I am really rather keen on my large glass of Gavi di Gavi, so I hold fire. Luckier still, my main course is a winner. Roast lamb with aubergine

purée, goat’s curd and anchovy salsa verde, it’s all the things I like having a little party on my plate. She has an excellent steak with excellent-er chips, and we have another glass of wine to reward ourselves. Everyone approves. It’s fun this, isn’t it? Loath to leave, we order prettyas-a-posy buttermilk mousse, orange blossom pain perdu and granité, and gooseberry fool, and work on halfbaked excuses about Tube delays and more alien landings. ET a no-show, we make a reluctant exit. So what have we learned about Pavilion? The food is intricate and interesting, the atmosphere excellent, and an afternoon spent here is far better invested than one spent in most places – let alone the office. We once thought, Henry James-style, that little could better the ceremony of afternoon tea. And then we took it at Sketch, and we thought we’d reached the zenith of pleasure. And then Sketch brought David Shrigley to tea, and our tiny little cream tea-filled heads nearly exploded over their brand new, bubblegum pinks walls. Dark comedic visual artist and long-standing Fabric hero Shrigley has transformed Sketch’s Gallery Restaurant, hanging up 239 original works of art, and turning his attention to the tableware too, as Sketch also bring their renowned afternoon tea offering into this space for the first time. We enjoyed Michelin-starred head chef Pierre Gagnaire’s unrivalled menu of fancy finger food and the sweetest sweet treats on Shrigley-designed chinaware, draining our rose tea to find “IT’S OK” (although beware – the sugar pot will tell you otherwise, and the salt cellar is, apparently, full of dust, the teapot of ghosts), and drank enough pink Champagne to go quite giddy over the art. And was Mr Shrigley as pleased as we were? Take a seat on the wild side We’re already massive fangirls of YOO, the interior design brand founded by property entrepreneur John Hitchcox and superchair designer Philippe Starck. owever I’d envisaged my grand entrance to Monte-Carlo, it certainly didn’t look like the picture I presented when I eventually arrived in Grace Kelly land. A scenic one-hour train journey from Cannes was disrupted by the longest rail strike in French history, and took five hot hours instead. When we finally staggered into the Hôtel Métropole, my travelling companion wasn’t talking to me, and neither of us looked so much Princess of Monaco as Perturbed of Morden. Thankfully, this five-star, Belle Époque beauty was well qualified to turn our frowns upside down. Calmed by classical design and air con, we headed straight to the lobby restaurant for a restorative glass of Sancerre and a not-so-light lunch of salmon salad, veal escalope and our first euphoriant entrée into the dessert trolley. Spirits and friendship restored, we were shown to our suite – a palatial pad with city views and an Hermès-stocked bathroom the size of your average London flat – before donning robes for a Heat Experience at the ESPA spa. This proved quite the experience: a blissful hour spent lying supine in the heavenly mosaiced space’s hammam, sauna and caldarium. Sufficiently soothed and set for the evening ahead, we were ready to take on MC à la Princess Grace. First stop Odyssey, the hotel’s new Karl Lagerfeld-designed terrace. A predictably chic monochrome affair with 60m Ulysses-inspired mural and twinkling pool, the tranquil terrace is home to one of the hotel’s three restaurants led by 28-Michelin-starred chef Joël Robuchon. The Odyssey restaurant – open to non-guests during summer months – runs with Lagerfeld’s Greek theme, adding influences from around the Med. Cue a fabulous feast of brochettes, fresh fish, and round two with the pudding tray. But we couldn’t spend our entire trip in the hotel, however lovely, and as it sits shoulder-toshoulder with world-famous Place du Casino, it seemed high time we put on our poker faces and flashed some cash. Apparently, this hot spot has made Monte a “byword for the reckless dispersal of wealth”. I’m not sure 20 Euros counts, but it’s quite wild enough in my eyes…

We’d enjoyed our poolside action so much that we were straight back there for freshly-baked croissants in the morning, then out to catch some rays. We were in the company of a mixed crowd: honeymooning couples, pensioners, families, and the odd A-lister all lounged side-by-side. In fact, this sunny scene paints the perfect picture of life at the Métropole: stylish enough for Hollywoodites, friendly enough to make for happy families, its welcoming vibe can be hard to find in a hotel of this calibre. Tucked away on a peaceful side street, it feels very much the secret hideaway – until, that is, the eye-watering parade of sports cars out front reminds you this is one of the best hotels in one of the world’s most exclusive destinations. Which, of course, made it all the harder to leave. But leave we must. This time, at least, we were armed. Gifted with gallons of water by the charming concierge, we took one last, longing look at the beautiful building, put on our very best Grace faces and steeled ourselves for battle with the French railways. How long have you been based in Mayfair? Almost two years now. Why did you decide to set up here? Originally I was based in the Chelsea Harbour Design Centre and it was a great start, but I wanted to be in a more exclusive and high-end location. I wanted my showroom to be somewhere that people could come and visit and understand what Anna Casa is all about. The fact that it is more central was a big bonus! I truly feel that my products reflect the exclusivity of Mayfair perfectly, so there was really no other place for me. What do you like most about the area? I love the fact that Mayfair is like a little heart of London. You have art, food, design, fashion, and jewellery – the best of the best in every category. Although it is a residential area, people from all around London work in this little hub, which makes it super diverse and so inspiring. You can feel the heart beat! Describe the area in five words? High-end, cultural, traditional, exclusive, and inviting. What are your favourite local cafés and restaurants? I love The Arts Club and Nobu! Dover Street Market also has a really lovely area for a delicious healthy lunch, which is brilliant. Where do you go for an afterwork drink? Rififi on Hay Hill – perfectly placed across the road from the showroom! Where do you shop locally? I love Dover Street Market – it has

such a fantastic buyer and the selection is always unique and unusual. They always find fresh new designers there, which I haven’t heard of before and always have something new for me to discover. Describe your perfect day here It would start with breakfast at Cecconi’s followed by a few creative meetings. Then a little peep into Dover Street Market or in a few shops on Bond Street – say hello to my friends in the neighbourhood. Then usually a light lunch at The Arts Club – for a lunch meeting, say. Finally I’d head to the showroom – it is my favourite part of the day! I shuffle things around, style new accessories and the furniture

in the showroom. I also meet clients on the showroom floor and get my creative juices flowing. To finish the day, a cup of green tea at Nobu is always a great way to relax. What did you look for in a property? I like a big space with lots of natural light and high ceilings. It needs to have great architecture itself, not just in terms of the property but also in the surrounding area. It is important to be in a space with character. Have you done much work on the space? Yes, lots! We change the showroom’s interior design every six to eight months for fresh energy. It helps to keep the space looking new and inviting as well as reflecting trends. If you hadn’t chosen here, where else might you have looked? Maybe Old Brompton Road. It is very similar to Mayfair. London is so big but has so many great little places that I could happily open a business in, so I am spoilt for choice really! Describe your interiors style My style and design aesthetic is all about drama with a touch of glamour, a mix of modern elegance and timeless classics... Finally, what’s new for you? We’re currently working on an Anna Casa lifestyle shop, which will be arriving very soon – so be sure to keep your eyes peeled!

The four-wheel drive in chief Jeep is the granddaddy of all 4x4s and the brand new Cherokee looks butch and high-riding enough to reflect that, with its chunky contours and chiselled visage. Condensation culture How do you get the world’s first production line fuel cell car noticed? As it’s a version of the relatively humble Hyundai i35, that could be tricky, but not after a striking visual makeover by students from the London College of Fashion. The two collaborated on a competition called Fashioned Fuel Cell, and this is the winner, the work of first year student Ilona Spruge, who said: “My inspiration for the campaign came from the simple truth ‘the car with a green agenda close to its heart’, and I felt empowered by Hyundai to create a design synonymous with a sustainable future.” We’re no experts when it comes to art, but we think she means the car emits only water vapour, and that’s what she tries to convey on its bodywork. If the Mini had one problem for the young couple about town, it was its lack of rear seat space. If the driver found her- or himself in the family way, it would have to be time for a new, different, basically bigger car. Now, finally, Mini has remedied this impasse with the launch of its first standard-model five-door Hatch, now rolling off the production line in Oxford. The car is 16cm longer to accommodate the two extra doors, with 7.2cm more room for legs, 1.2cm more for heads and 6.1cm more for elbows. Wrist action We’ve coped for years with a separate watch and phone without feeling the need to replicate the latter’s features on the former. But there is something rather fun about being able to see messages at a glance or info such as stock market updates, weather forecasts or football scores. Ahead of the curve Just three months after shaking up the TV market with its first curved OLED TV screen, LG has gone and exceeded itself with the world’s first curved OLED TV with 4K resolution. Impressed or confused? Ok, time to explain some of those acronyms. Anyone watching the World Cup last month may have been curious about those Sony 4K hoarding ads, touting the new ultra-high resolution format that’s about to revolutionise TV broadcasting. Take your current HDTV and imagine a picture four times as detailed, with over eight million pixels. You can already see some 4K shows on Netflix, but the BBC and Sky are gearing up to start 4K broadcasts (hopefully next year). There are other 4K screens, even other curved ones, but only the 77-inch 77EC980V and 65-inch 65EC970V are OLED, which means their LEDs are organic. “If I’m perfectly honest, it’s a little disconcerting,” he says, pointedly clearing his throat. After seven seasons spent portraying the archetype of urbane, effortless swagger, life out of Don Draper’s perfectly-tailored shadow is currently in question. “Right now, after Mad Men, I don’t necessarily have anything lined up,” the actor admits. “And I’m acutely aware I’ll be gainfully unemployed very soon. Quite honestly, I don’t know what the future holds for me.” With only seven episodes left in the smoky, seductive Mad Men cosmos, Jon is strangely bereft of that signature WWW.FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

time to stop, I’m going to be like, ‘I don’t want to get off man!’” After delivering dependable supporting fare in movies Sucker Punch, Bridesmaids, and The Town – and, surprisngly, portraying an older Daniel Radcliffe in Sky’s A Young Doctor’s Notebook – he’ll take his first lead in Disney biopic Million Dollar Arm, playing sports agent J.B. Bernstein who introduced India’s first players to Major League Baseball.“I’m a massive baseball fan, and it’s an inspiring, true story that went below my radar. It shows how sport gave these characters a way to find a new path.” “Also, there’s this fantastic fish out of water element, where J.B. finds himself trying to negotiate this culture on the other side of the planet, then brings back these players to the States and wrenches them out of their comfort zone. It’s enthralling from so many angles.” The film also looks at baseball as a progenitive of cricket. Did Hamm make a point of taking in a few wickets at Lords while shooting another season of A Young Doctor’s Notebook in London last year? “I didn’t actually. Our schedule was too tight for much beyond the odd stroll around the city. It’s a shame – it would have been wonderful research, and fascinating for me too.” All the more reason to secure an upcoming role that will bring him back to the Capital. “If only to explore the different areas. Last time I stayed near London Bridge, so I took in life by the river, explored the markets and little side streets. London, for me, is very freeing. It’s so cavernous and labyrinthine, with secret escapes and abodes that no one knows about unless they want to.” Which must prove useful for an international sex symbol (sorry!) looking to stay under the radar. “London’s the kind of place that if you want to disappear, you can. And if you want to appear in full view, no one really bats an eyelid. But I don’t get that much anyway. Herein lies the big, gaping difference between me and Don Draper – he’s the sharp-suited, hard-drinking playboy, and I’m all scruffy hair and prickly stubble with big dark circles under my eyes.” Maybe. But while you can take the man out of the suit, it’s quite clear you can’t take the signature Draper charm out of Jon Hamm. There’s this month’s Disney release, Million Dollar Arm, shot last year between Atlanta and Mumbai, a few days in the sound booth for Universal’s animated latest, The Minions, and that’s pretty much it for the 43 year old from St. Louis. “People may not accept me in other roles. They might only want to see me as Don – brooding and drinking and whoring around. Obviously I’m hoping they’ll like other versions of me, too…” As the debonair advertising exec, all Brylcreemed locks with a Grace Kelly wife, a punch card of mistresses and a mysterious past, he’s whipped an army of fans into a lust-fuelled frenzy with his suave Old Hollywood charm and brooding good looks. And while millions despondently anticipate the bitter end of the iconic series, Hamm has found one silver lining – a welcome farewell to his reprehensible status as a symbol of sex. At least, that’s what he thinks. “It seems so silly to me,” he says of ‘the Draper effect’, chuckling from the Manhattan townhouse he shares with partner of 17 years, actress Jennifer Westfeldt. “Because if you could see me right now, in my sweat pants with my dog staring at me… so silly.” “I don’t know anyone who approaches that status with anything but a bemused kind of curiosity. It’s something that only other people can bestow on you, and something that I don’t relate to really at all. I just find it confusing.” ‘Maddists’ – devotees of the series – have another year to anticipate the loss of Sterling Cooper’s finest, as network AMC split the last run, screening the second half next spring. The end, however, comes considerably sooner for Hamm, who is in the midst of shooting the final scenes when we speak. He expects some emotional outbursts. “I think I’ll be a mess, honestly. There will be tears, probably fist fights and hair-pulling and every emotional expression imaginable. It will be biblical in its emotion.” “This show has essentially taken up a decade for me, and it’s been a great decade. I’ve met people who I think will be friends for the rest of my life. I’ve had a lot of amazing experiences – gotten to go to award shows, and just experience things that, when you first start going down the acting path, you think will never happen. And yet they did. So it’s been an emotional rollercoaster ride. I think when it’s

t doesn’t feel like your typical city find… Agreed. a wide selection of people. Stucco-fronted mansions boasting rare canal-side views are complemented by hidden communal gardens and lovely cobbled crescents. And to top it off, you can also find the BBC recording studios here. Quite the hub of celebrity activity. Any chance it also happens to be a hub of educational activity? It sure does. It boasts a wide array of excellent state and private schools, like the Essedine Primary School and St. George’s Catholic School. You really are spoilt for choice. The perfect recipe for a fresh start… Which is exactly what the Victorian poet Robert Browning thought. He also appreciated

But we don’t think you’ll want your money back; this covetable postcode is charming, charismatic, and beautifully unique. And if you want more evidence of its bizarrely brilliant appeal, you can catch a Waterbus to London Zoo or Regent’s Park – if, of course, that floats your boat. (Pun fully intended.)

EATING THE TRUSCOTT ARMS With food this good, you’d be forgiven for thinking (were you to do a blindfolded taste test, of course), that you were eating in one of the Capital’s finest fine dining establishments. This has everything to do with the recent appointment of talented young head chef Barry Snook to The Truscott Arms, whose culinary

mastery has been attracting the attention of Maida Vale locals and beyond. But this is, in fact, a gastropub – albeit a rather smart one – and so we were intrigued to taste their new take on good old British pub grub. We lucked out with the perfect weather for a spot of al fresco lunching in the pub’s pretty, enclosed garden – devouring between us battered Cornish cod and chips with pea purée, and the roasted gnocchi with wild mushrooms and parmesan (a little fancier than your average, yes). “What advice would you give when considering a self-build project?” A self-build project can be particularly exciting and rewarding when you’re presented with the finished product, but there are a few fundamentals you must be aware of before you embark. Firstly, you need to think about where you’re going to live while the work’s going on. It may seem romantic to stay in a caravan on site and watch your dream home being built, but the reality is that the project is likely to overrun, and you may be camping out during the winter months. Finally, consider whether it is ultimately a good investment. Your dream home is not necessarily going to be in line with everyone’s taste, so plan ahead and protect your cash by keeping a close eye on what the property might be worth once built. It would be advisable to consult a solicitor who specialises in such matters before carrying out any development. This is especially important in a case where a party wall is involved; a party wall agreement may be required. Further experts to think about consulting, depending of course on the nature and scale of the project, should include an architect, a surveyor and a structural engineer. A self-build can be a nerve-wracking prospect, but it doesn’t have to be a stressful experience if armed with the right knowledge – it’s imperative that you’re comprehensive and that you fully understand all the legalities involved in carrying out a project of this scale. This is mainly for safety reasons, of course, but also for the purpose of re-sale, to avoid encountering any issues during the conveyancing. It’s wise to think ahead!
