The talented star not only wrote and stars in the gripping police drama, but exec produced it, too. We caught up to get the lowdown on the series. She also filled us in on her ultimate day in London; if you need ideas for your own, you’ll find inspiration aplenty in this issue. And if an escape from the Big Smoke is on the cards, look no further than our travel pages. This month we review an exciting resort in Cyprus (the perfect spot for some autumn sunshine) and a chic new hotel that’s drawing the crowds to Bournemouth. Equally chic is our interiors section, where we explore the best in high end furnishings and design. And we bring you all the hottest properties and market news, as always. THEATRE The HouseSnail
In a bold celebration of original drama, Hampstead Theatre announces four world premieres for autumn 2022. The first of which is written and directed by Richard Eyre, former artistic director of the National Theatre and a dab hand at adapting other people’s work for the stage. The Snail House is his first completely original play. Sir Neil Marriot, a familiar face on TV as the government’s medical advisor, is hosting his own lavish birthday party. But amidst the grand oak panelling and the flowing Champagne his family are at one another’s throats. There’s also something deeply unsettling about one of the caterers… Intrigued? You will be.

DESIGN FAIR MattersMaterial 22-25 September, Bargehouse
Oxo Tower Wharf, Bargehouse Street, SE1 (materialmatters.design)
A new fixture on the London design calendar, Material Matters will launch during this year’s London Design Festival – just when all eyes are on the Capital’s most exciting movers and shakers and designermakers. The inaugural fair turns the critically acclaimed podcast of the same name into a 3D exhibition, looking at ideas for a better future including circularity in design and materials; how materials can help drive the sustainable agenda; and how they can influence human behaviour. Expect an extensive talks programme curated by Grant Gibson, design, craft and architecture writer, and of course, popular podcaster.

14 September-15 November, Saatchi Yates This US-born mixed media artist grew up living between the United States, India, South Africa, The Netherlands and Belgium. She’s now based in Ghent. Her fascinating work merges the rich variety of her personal story, her mixed cultural heritage, and her lived experiences. In her first UK solo show, Langa dives into the world of modern media and internet culture. Expect an exploration of figuration and abstraction through 20 new paintings. She says: “I see paintings as a laptop that has a lot of tabs open: one painting can be really quiet, or loud, or eccentric, and still all come together in one collection”. 6 Cork Street, W1S (020 8187 9445; saatchiyates.com)
It is a rare thing when the story of the performers themselves is as enthralling as the tale they’re telling. The United Ukrainian Ballet comprises 60 artists in exile, all of whom have fled their homeland as a result of Russia’s invasion and the ongoing conflict. This powerful interpretation of the highly charged 1841 ballet sees world-renowned choreographer Alexei Ratmansky, who grew up in Ukraine, at the helm, while Viktor Oliynyk, conductor of the National Opera of Ukraine, takes the baton. Profits from the September stint at the Coliseum will go to the DEC Ukraine Appeal and The United Ukrainian Ballet Foundation. Expect themes of love, betrayal, life and death… and with this performance, hope. St. Martin’s Lane, WC2N (020 7845 9300; londoncoliseum.org)

It’s hard to believe that veteran Hollywood star Gabriel Byrne is making his West End debut at the age of 72. Proving that it’s better late than never, the Irish actor brings his critically acclaimed one man show to Shaftesbury Avenue following a sold-out stint at Dublin’s Gaiety. Adapted from his best-selling memoir of the same name, Walking with Ghosts promises hilarity, heartbreak, and a lifetime of fascinating anecdotes from a master storyteller. Byrne says: “I’ve chosen to be honest and unflinching in the recounting of a life from working class Dublin to Hollywood. Although rooted in the local, I hope the play has a universal resonance. What I want in the theatre is to be moved to laugh, to be provoked, to be changed.” Not to be missed.

Tiffany Anna: TA X LDN 10-28 September, 340 King’s Road If you’re struggling to get your head around NFTs, this hybrid metaverse/ physical exhibition is a great place to start. In her first London solo show, dynamic young artist Tiffany Anna will present over 125 NFT works (visitors can view – and buy – the artworks with the help of virtual reality goggles), alongside 40 large scale paintings and limited-edition prints. With inspiration found in ballsy wallpaper prints, street art and the cosmos, Tiffany’s work is bold, bright, and bursting with colour. “I absolutely love colour and my dream is to create artwork that makes people smile both inside and out,” she says. 340 King’s Road, SW3 (tiffany.gg)
A festival for literature lovers on our doorstep? Yes please! September sees the return of north west London’s beloved book fair with a line-up to inspire. On the programme are Robert Harris, Colin Thubron, Victoria Hislop, Natasha Brown, plus many more celebrated authors: expect a mix of household names, local talent and the most soughtafter new writers around. Beyond the books, there’ll be food and drink plus Saturday night entertainment with music and a late bar, all in Queen’s Park’s 30 acres of verdant surrounds. Man Booker prize winner Howard Jacobson says: “The festival still retains the blessed atmosphere of a garden fête. We really are in a park. The ground is sun-warmed. Parakeets dash screaming from tree to tree. And writers sign their books in a bandstand… This is an oasis of sanity.” Queen’s Park, (queensparkbookfestival.co.uk)NW6

hen Karen Pirie, ITV’s new police drama, hits our television screens this month, it will be the exciting culmination of years of hard work for north Londoner Emer Kenny, who not only appears in the series, but wrote it and exec produced it, too. And she couldn’t be more excited to see the reception it receives. “I have been working on it for three or four years now, so it feels like it’s been a long time coming. I just really want people to see it. I have watched it so many times. I’d say that I have seen every episode about 40 times,” she laughs. “I was involved in the editing process, as well, so I know the show inside out from every angle now. And I feel so proud of it. So, yeah, I’m very excited. I think maybe the nerves will come in just before it comes out, but at the moment I am just really excited,” she tells me when we sit down to talk. The story is based on Val McDermid’s novel, The Distant Echo, the first in a series of bestselling books about a young female detective set in the beautiful Scottish university town of St. Andrew’s. “It is about a young female detective who is assigned to a cold case because the police department are worried about a true crime podcast that has come out about this unsolved murder from 1996,” Emer tells me. The case is that of Rosie Duff, a 19-year-old barmaid who was killed while walking home one night. Though the university students who found her were suspected, nobody was charged with the crime. “The podcast accuses the police of victim shaming, and malpractice and neglect. Because of this they decide that it would be a good look for them to put a woman on the case, but they also don’t want to use their best personnel, because they think that the case is unsolvable without new evidence,” Emer explains. “So, they put this young, very underestimated detective on the case, Karen Pirie.”

Emer has been working in the industry for over 15 years – she made her professional acting debut in the BBC drama Coming Down the Mountain aged 17, back in 2007 and began writing for EastEnders in 2010 – but this is the first time she has been involved in a project on quite so many levels. “It felt really natural,” she tells me, “I have been juggling several different hats for a long time and it felt really good to bring all of those things together on one project, to write and act. And then to exec produce as well, I got to see lots of the other creative aspects of the show. So, it was really satisfying for me to do that on one project.”
Revealing how she came to be involved with the project, Emer tells me: “I wrote an episode for a great Sky show called Save Me a couple of years ago. The production company that was making that, World Productions, I had worked with them quite a bit – they make things like Line of Duty and Bodyguard – and they said to me that they had a series of books that they were hoping to adapt, and would I like to take a look. I had never read any of Val’s fiction, but I had read Forensics, which is really good. It’s a non-fiction book that she wrote about the history of forensics, and it is really interesting, and I loved that. And I had seen her on TV and listened to her on the radio, and always thought that she was a really clever, impressive person, so I was really excited to be asked,” she explains. “They sent me the first one and I read it and it had something about it that really spoke to me. I had an instant reaction to Karen’s character. She was really unusual and really relatable. So, I took the project on, and we went to ITV with it and pitched it. And, yeah, they loved it and we got to make it…” HAVE BEEN

INTERVIEW 43 fabricmagazine.co.uk
Though she has the sole writing credit for the series, writing isn’t something that Emer ever thought she would do professionally. “I think that I have always written in some form or other since I was very young. But it was never something that I imagined I would do. I always felt quite in awe of writers – and felt that I could never be that clever,” she explains. “But once I started acting, and reading a lot of scripts, I started having ideas. And the format of scriptwriting just made sense to me, because I watched a lot of TV and films, so it felt like something I already knew. But it is also something that I find really, really hard. And it can be a really lonely process, because you are in a room with just your laptop and your thoughts, for days and days and months on end.”
For the moment, time to enjoy the fruits of her latest work, and to make the most of life in her favourite city. “I really, really love London. I was born here, and I have always lived here,” she explains. “I am from north London, so my ultimate day would begin with a walk on Hampstead Heath, because it is just the best place. And then I would go and get breakfast somewhere like Mario’s, which is in Kentish Town and is an absolute classic. And then I would probably walk into town because I just love walking through this city. So, I would probably walk through Camden and Regent’s Park, and then I would go shopping (this is a long day by the way!). I would go to Liberty, which is probably my favourite place in the world. And then I would eat something in Soho, or maybe China Town, before going to the Soho Theatre, which is another of my favourite places in the world. I’d see some comedy, maybe somebody I know and somebody I didn’t know, because they always have a bunch of acts on. And then I would get a cab home, because I would have walked a lot by this point!” Sounds pretty perfect.
One way Emer does this is through writing; I ask whether she could see herself moving away from the acting altogether to focus entirely on this. “I think I will always write; I can’t imagine not doing it. But, at the same time, my favourite thing in the world is to be on set,” she explains. “And the acting and the exec-ing part of the job definitely fills me with more joy. I love being around people, I love the more collaborative, hands-on elements to creativity, but I think writing will always be there.” It may always be there, but it is not necessarily something that comes naturally to her. “I find it a battle. It is such a battle,” she admits. “I have to force myself into it. I have to say to myself, do five minutes, now 10 minutes… to just make a start. But once you do, you can end up writing for hours. But it is always an uphill struggle. I have got better, because I have been writing for 10, 12 years now and I have got a lot more disciplined.
I saw something today that said writing is one of those things that you always feel more tired at the beginning than you do at the end. And I was like, that’s true! Oh man, that makes so much sense. I feel so much better at the end.” But of course, even at the ‘end’, when the script is written, a scriptwriter’s job is not actually finished. “With a script you will rewrite it 12 or 15 times,” Emer tells me. “I would say scriptwriting is 90 per cent rewriting. Actually, probably more, 99 per cent rewriting, because it is so collaborative compared to other types of writing. And it is repetitive. But then, as an actor, you will do a scene like 20 or 30 times. When my husband [BBC Radio 5 Live’s Rick Edwards] comes on set and watches us – he is a presenter, so he’s not used to doing things over and over again – he’s like, ‘What the hell, how do you do things over and over again without getting bored?’ Maybe I am just really well trained in the art of repeating the same action, I don’t know?” She laughs. And all the rewriting is worth it in the end –there’s no doubt that Emer sees Karen Pirie as a career highlight. “I have never been as proud of any project that I have done,” she tells me. “I had a lot of pinch-me moments on set, where scenes I had written were coming to life and they were better than I had imagined. And I just kept thinking, I can’t believe that I get to do this, I can’t believe that I am here. And that is what it is all about really, those moments where you feel really fulfilled.” A risk worth taking, you could say. “I wish I’d been told early on in my career that taking big risks pays off,” Emer agrees. “Because I think that making great work is all about being vulnerable, trying things out, being fearless… and every time I have done that, it has paid off. Whether that is in an audition, or on set, or writing, or with an idea.
One such aspect was casting, which Emer was thrilled to be involved with. “I got involved with almost everything that I was allowed to, really. And I loved the casting process,” she reveals. “We had a brilliant casting director called Dan Jackson, and the Scottish talent pool is just so impressive. We wanted to cast as many Scottish actors as we could, to make it feel really authentic and rooted in Scotland. So, that was one of my favourite parts of the whole process.”

get. I think when something doesn’t go your way you just have to cry! I think it is about lack of control – that is the scariest thing about the rejection in acting. The frustration of the rejection in acting is that you just really, really want to work, and express yourself, and be creative, so I think that if you have other ways of doing that in your life, it just takes the hurt out of the rejection a little bit.”
The more fearless and vulnerable you can be, the better your work will be.” What risks will she be taking next, I ask. “I’ve got a couple of things in the pipeline,” she says. “I am writing on an original thing of mine at the moment, and I am filming something later in the year, but I don’t think I can tell you anything about them yet, because they haven’t been announced. Hopefully I will be able to talk about them soon…”
It also proved eye-opening. “I thought the most painful rejection was when you don’t get an acting job that you really want, but then, when I was casting, we sent the scripts out to various actors, and some came back and said, ‘I don’t really relate to the material’,” Emer admits. “I think feeling the burn in the opposite direction was actually more painful. I was like, oh wow, I am just finding new ways to get rejected,” she laughs. “When we were going through that, Dan said to me: ‘The right person always ends up doing the job, trust me, I have been doing this for long enough.’ And he’s so right.” Indeed, the cast is excellent, headed up by Outlander star Lauren Lyle, who plays Karen Pirie. Learning to deal with rejection – from both sides – has been one of the hardest things about working in the industry, Emer tells me. “It’s so hard!” She exclaims. “I still can’t watch TV shows that I auditioned for and really wanted but didn’t

Developed in the 1950s by Michel Pistor, a French doctor, mesotherapy was originally used to relieve pain. Now one of the most sought after natural, non-surgical anti-ageing treatments, the procedure enables a bespoke combination of powerful vitamins, minerals, amino acids and hyaluronic acid to be administered to the lower layers of the skin, immediately delivering hydration, while toning and smoothing the surface of skin. I’ve read much about it, but always been put off by the thought of the needles involved. Vaishaly is quick to assure me that though a needle is used, she isn’t injecting in the strictest sense of the word. She uses a process called ‘nappage’, to tap across the surface of the skin with a micro-needle which barely penetrates the surface. Setting my mind at ease, she demonstrates on the back of my hand – it feels like a series of tiny scratches and is totally bearable, though she explains that she will apply numbing cream to delicate areas, just in case. Having already assessed the specific needs of my skin, Vaishaly has mixed up a bespoke cocktail of goodies that will leave me glowing. She starts by cleansing my skin and massaging, ensuring that I am totally relaxed. The mesotherapy is quick and totally painless, and it is followed by the most incredible cranio sacral work. Powerful yet so gentle, Vaishaly uses the technique to balance and harmonise the mind and body, releasing tension and stress from the face, neck, and mind, facilitating the deepest possible healing and relaxation. It is like nothing I have ever experienced and leaves me feeling as though I am floating. Immediately after the treatment I can see an improvement in my complexion – I look like I have slept for hours. My skin appears smooth and glowing. And the effects become more exaggerated over time; I feel as though I could go without moisturiser for days. A week later, dark circles are all but erased and fine lines appear diminished. It is quite simply magical and I know I will be back for more.
When super facialist Vaishaly promises a new treatment guaranteed to make you look younger, you know to expect something extra special Hers is one of the best-known names in skincare, and for good reason – she’s been transforming troubled complexions and wrangling wrinkles from her eponymous Marylebone clinic for 20 years, counting A-listers including Gwyneth Paltrow and Elle Macpherson as clients.

HUTLEY REVIEW HEALTH SPECIAL 49 fabricmagazine.co.uk
How often have you uttered the words “there’s nothing more important than your health”? If you’re anything like me, I’d put the rough estimate at ‘incalculable’. Blessed to have reached my fifth decade with nary a serious health issue to trouble me, I don’t underestimate how lucky I am and, if you can say the same, you are too. But what if someone could offer you a crystal ball – a glimpse into the future to determine whether your luck will stay good, or whether there could be something unfortunate lurking around the corner? Would you take it? Or would you prefer to operate as humans have done for millennia, not knowing what lies in store? A glimpse into the future is exactly what is on offer at Echelon Health, by way of their Platinum Health Assessment. Proactive, predictive and utterly personalised, Echelon Health’s personal health assessments are executed with the most advanced medical imaging equipment available on the market and can detect up to 92 per cent of disease causes in men and up to 95 per cent in women. Once you realise that the metaphorical crystal ball is a genuine option, though, doubt can start to set in: is it better to not know? Would it change the way I live today if I found something out about tomorrow? While the benefits of early detection are obvious even to the most superstitious of souls, I can’t say that it wasn’t with a degree of trepidation that I booked myself in. It soon became apparent, however, that as well as worldbeating medical expertise, Echelon Health are also Olympic class operatives in the calming of nerves. My client liaison contact Hannah was an absolute angel, taking me through what the day would hold, answering all my questions and generally making clear that nothing was too much trouble. The cherry on the cake was their offer of an overnight stay at the Mandarin Oriental the night before my treatment; the downside is that I have to undertake some pretty intensive preparation for the colonoscopy that will be happening on the day, but with a generous £200 of credit thrown in for me to treat myself to some pre-assessment indulgence at the award-winning spa, I definitely wasn’t complaining. So far, so pretty much perfect. At 8am on the morning of my booking, Hannah met me at the hotel and accompanied me to Echelon Health’s premises on Harley Street. As warm and friendly in person as she’d been in the run up, Hannah confirmed the day’s schedule with me – and boy, what a schedule. There’d be no point in me pretending that the day wasn’t a pretty intense experience; not unpleasant, just… a lot. To wit: full body mole screen, digital mammogram, blood tests, ECG, CTs, MRIs and ultrasounds of all colours and creeds. But while that’s an exhaustive/exhausting list of procedures to undergo in one day, not only was everyone I encountered so kind and gentle (not to mention professional), but the whole thing was over by around 2pm. A degree of short-term discomfort for a massive long term gain is a pretty good deal. Two weeks later I had my consultation booked in with Echelon Health Founder and Director, and Cambridge Laureate Endocrinologist, Dr Paul Jenkins. Again, I won’t sugar coat it; in the lead up to my consultation, my nerves were jangling to the extent that I actually went completely teetotal in the interim (can you IMAGINE!), in a spectacular display of ‘locking the stable door after the horse has bolted’ liver repair. My luck, though, was in; I had a hiatus hernia I didn’t know about, some hormone and vitamin levels that needed tweaking and were no surprise to me, and – bizarrely – a couple of surgical staples in my neck for which we could find no reasonable account in terms of the various surgeries I’d had over the years. Curiouser and curiouser. But again, Dr Jenkins couldn’t have been a lovelier or, I imagine, safer pair of hands to be in, had there been any worrying news to report. I felt quite elated afterwards, particularly at the verdict that I had an “impeccable” heart and liver, and “better bone density than a 20 year old” (might put that on my Insta bio). Indeed, the only problem that was left unresolved was how I can stump up the cash for all my loved ones to enjoy the same benefits on a regular basis. Turns out that a glimpse of the future is a wonderful thing, after all. The Echelon Optimum is priced at £24,000 for two people or £14,000 for one. Echelon Optimum clients have a £200 voucher to spend as they wish at the Mandarin Oriental. For further information, see echelon.health

September will see a series of exciting culinary talents taking over the kitchen at Kricket in White City. The popular annual chef series is now in its fourth year and will again help to raise vital funds for long-term charity partner Apne Aap Women’s Collective (AAWC). Founded in 1990, AAWC is an anti-trafficking organisation that serves the women in brothel-based prostitution and their children in Asia’s second largest red-light district of Kamathipura, in Mumbai. Sally Abé (The Pem), Jackson Boxer (Brunswick House and Orasay), Will Murray and Jack Croft (Fallow) and Ben Tish (Cubitt House) will all take part in this year’s series, which will run on Tuesday evenings throughout the month, starting 6 September. Each chef has developed a bespoke menu in collaboration with chef patron Will Bowlby, mixing their own distinctive styles with a taste of India. Priced at £65 per person (with all profits going to AAWC) each menu will include four courses and a welcome drink from the team at SOMA, Will and partner Rik Campbell’s popular Soho cocktail bar.

After a long, hot summer, it feels like there are more reasons than ever to think about our environmental impact. It’s undeniable that minimising our meat consumption is one way we can make a difference, though, for some, that’s easier said than done. Good news: Powerplant, the new plant-based restaurant at Camden ‘poshtel’ Selina has just announced its partnership with Redefine Meat, the global pioneer of New Meat. Achieving what has long been considered impossible, Redefine Meat’s products are 100 per cent plant-based, but perfectly mimic the taste and texture of different high-quality meat cuts. Taking the culinary world by storm – Marco Pierre White described the products as “mind-blowing” – the range includes beef and lamb cuts, as well as premium burgers, sausages, lamb kebabs, and ground beef.
The exciting new menu created by Powerplant Camden’s head chef, Lukasz Dawidowicz, includes burger with smashed avocado, Koreanstyle pulled beef brisket taco and shakshuka with spicy merguez sausage. And there are more exciting dishes planned… Well worth a taste. 89 Chalk Farm Road, NW1 (020 3966 0765; powerplant.global)

What’s the last thing you cooked? Cantonese fried rice. To cook, I preheat a large skillet or wok on medium heat, pour sesame oil in the bottom and then fry chopped onion, peas and carrots, before moving to one side and pouring beaten eggs on the other side of the wok. I then use a spatula to scramble the eggs and add the rice to the mixture, before mixing everything together and pouring soy sauce on top.
Edd says: “Made with melted butter so that the batter comes together in a flash, this is the cake you whip up when guests unexpectedly announce their imminent arrival. The joy in this cake, beyond the ease with which it is made (no bread dough required), is the cinnamon butter that you swirl into the batter, creating little pockets of spiced goodness in every slice.”
What’s your signature dish?
Char siu (Cantonese style barbecued pork) served with Claypot rice. The rice is pre-soaked, or in some cases parcooked, and finished in a clay pot with other ingredients, which then flavour it beautifully. This dish is commonly served with chicken, Chinese sausage, and vegetables. Traditionally, it’s cooked over a charcoal stove, giving it a distinctive flavour. It’s delicious with thick, sweetened soy sauce.

WINTER SUN A dreamCaribbean
We’re just coming into one of the best seasons to visit Marrakech. Autumn here is wonderful, as is spring, though the whole of winter is enjoyable as the weather is so much warmer than it is in Europe. From shopping in the souks and experiencing a Hammam spa ritual, to taking part in a fun cooking class, there’s so much to do here. And, of course, so many historical sites. Our concierge team keeps an updated guide with tips to make the most of your time, combining discovery, shopping and suggestions for the best places to eat. We also offer some wonderful experiences. The Saffron Tour takes guests to the Atlas Mountains to witness the fields of purple crocuses in the picturesque Ourika Valley, revealing the labour-intensive process of the saffron harvest. We can also offer a private visit to Villa Oasis, the home of legendary designer, Yves Saint Laurent, as well as a visit to a Berber community in the Atlas Mountains. Shorter, hour-long experiences include an Architectural Living Heritage Tour, and, for foodies, Moroccan sweet making, and bread baking classes. If you prefer independent exploration, the cobblestoned lanes of the Médina should be your first stop, to experience the bustling souks. Don’t miss the extravagant Bahia Palace, with its intricate marquetry, plasterwork and painted wood. If you’re after a spot of refreshment, Bacha Coffee is a real hidden gem. In the new city, don’t miss the Majorelle Garden and the Yves Saint Laurent Museum. La Sultana Marrakech has the largest roof terrace within the Médina, offering views to the snow-capped Atlas Mountains. This is home to Le Odette Rooftop Bar & Mezze, a great place for dinner. If staying a little longer, we also recommend visiting Comptoir Darna. Perfect for first timers to Marrakech, it offers a totally unique experience – expect authentic Moroccan cuisine and belly dancers!

WORDS by ALI HOWARD
The glistening turquoise waters of Cyprus had been calling us since March 2020, but with postponed trip after postponed trip, our long-awaited escape was made even more magical. It’s easy to forget quite how far away this Greek/Turkish island is. A hop over the water and you’re in Lebanon, or Syria, depending on which direction you hop. After our not quite long-haul flight, we catch a late-night transfer and immediately feel that exotic, Middle Eastern sizzle: this is Europe, but not as we know it. Parklane is situated almost equidistant between Paphos and Larnaca airports, making it remote enough to be off the tourist trail yet easily accessible. We’ve had long delays but soon realise that to enter the hotel’s art gallery-like lobby at midnight is to see it at its best: lit up and with nobody else around. In the cavernous white hall, we’re welcomed by enormous floral displays, complete with spiky orange Bird of Paradise flowers, and we’re in no doubt that we’ve found our Eden. Here, it’s difficult to concentrate on the formalities of checking in when there’s the distraction of large-scale sculptural artworks, designed to dazzle. Cleverly, they’re designed to be appreciated at every height and angle, too. A spectacular coloured glass installation hangs from the ceiling with each floor of the hotel acting as a unique viewing platform.

With its rich heritage and cosmopolitan flair, old and new worlds collide at Parklane, a Luxury Collection resort
review
Whether the glass represents abstract birds or falling leaves, we’re reminded that, despite Parklane’s sleek contemporary interiors, we’re also inextricably connected to nature.
LAID BACK IN LIMASSOL
Having taken in the hotel’s illuminated vista from our balcony –with sparkling wine and nibbles and our first taste of rich Cypriot halloumi – we’re greeted in the morning by glorious sunshine and a beautiful view of the marina. Lofty palm trees lead the eye out to sea via a volcanic sandy Blue Flag beach, while the pools below look so inviting we’re tempted to skip breakfast altogether and dive straight in. But that would be a mistake here: the buffet offering at Lanes restaurant is vast. Like wide-eyed children in a sweet shop, we fill up on eggs and salmon and locally made pastries and chocolate-covered waffles… and we eat until we simply cannot, which will become a theme of this trip. Proudly hospitable, this is an island of feeders. There’s food to fuel our adventures, but then there’s coffee. Before we head off to explore the island we meet for an epicurean moment in the art-filled lobby and get a fascinating history lesson on the tradition of Cypriot coffee making as we sip. Bellies full and with caffeine in our veins, our first port of call is the site of the ancient city-kingdom of Kourion, famed for its intricate mosaics, which decorated the floors of once magnificent mansions and courtyards. Astonishingly, the house of Achilles dates back to the 4th century AD, and as we’re guided through the ruins, we’re invited to imagine ourselves living as these well-todo ancient islanders did, with preserved structures – not unlike modern property foundations – allowing us to picture living rooms, bedrooms and kitchens in their earliest incarnations. The
Our stay at Parklane coincides with the hotly anticipated opening of NAMMOS Limassol, the latest in a small but global chain of exclusive dining destinations. Situated within the hotel’s elegant grounds, the restaurant and event space is suitably chic and minimal with its long white canteen-style tables making way for an all-important dancing space. To our delight, amongst a line-up of top Cypriot acts, we’re entertained by The Gipsy Kings as we quaff endless glasses of Champagne and dine on the delectable set menu. Everyone here is dressed to impress and we spot some familiar faces, from the perfectly preened influencers who’ve flown in from Dubai to the giant NBA stars who amusingly block our view just as the opening rhythmic strums of Bamboléo ring out. Complete with a jaw-dropping fireworks display behind the stage, the night is impossibly glamorous.

archaeological site includes the Kourion theatre, a Greco-Roman stone amphitheatre built into the rugged landscape, complete with majestic Mediterranean views. As we sit, just as audiences of old did, we take in the sheer enormity of it all, feeling both overwhelmed and wonderfully connected to past civilizations. From mosaics to mythology, we stop off at the birthplace of the goddess of love and dip our toes into the waters surrounding Petra tou Romiou, otherwise known as Aphrodite’s Rock. According to legend, those who swim around the rock three times are granted eternal youth, beauty, good luck, fertility and true love. It is tempting, but a traditional mezze lunch in the quaint village of Pissouri awaits, along with a gang of hungry but healthy street cats, waiting patiently for scraps. Back at the hotel, there’s time to fully relax and unwind in the serene Kalloni Spa, where we are spoilt with a blissful massage. As our tired bones are gently pummelled we drift in and out of half-sleep before cosying up in fluffy robes and the biggest reclining armchairs imaginable, herbal tea in hand.
We spend our last day in Cyprus dipping in and out of boutiques in picturesque Lefkara, which is famed for its embroidery and lacemaking. It’s said that when Leonardo Da Vinci visited the Queen of Cyprus, he brought back a Lefkaritiko lace tablecloth, which to this day adorns the Duomo chapel in Milan. Of course, we cannot resist a little retail opportunity. If it’s good enough for Da Vinci… We’re keen to spend our last few hours basking in the sunshine, and there’s nowhere better to do that than at Parklane’s choice of luxurious pools. Feeling fully relaxed and positively spiritual, we say our mental goodbyes to the island as a gentle breeze rocks us in our half-in/half-out poolside sun lounger. It is nothing short of heavenly.

Parklane’s logo is that of a traditional amphora, used in ancient times to store precious fragrances, and so it’s apt that we head to the nearby historical perfume factory (or theme park as it’s hilariously translated) to get the lowdown on the area’s sweet-smelling heritage. But this is where local – truly local –knowledge is a must: the outdoor Pyrgos perfumery is home to such precious artefacts that its exact location is a closely guarded secret, flummoxing many a head-scratching cabbie and even Google Maps with its mysterious coordinates. We’re given a tour of the exhibition with fascinating insights and anecdotes about how the pots and distillery apparatus would have been used, how they were miraculously preserved, and how they were procured. But this is no hands-off British Museum: before we know it we’re lighting fires and stuffing ancient pots with fir branches; trying our hand at the pottery wheel (so much harder than it looks); and finding our inner archaeologists with an exciting excavation dig that’s admittedly aimed for visiting school kids but we scrape and shovel, nonetheless, with spirit and gusto. Of course, no trip to a perfume factory would be complete without having a go at perfume making, and we end our visit passing pipettes around a trestle table until we’ve created our very own fragrance, the results
A gear change (think detox to retox) sees us meeting for cocktails at chic indoor/outdoor space The Gallery, which, if timed right, is the perfect spot for watching a glorious sunset. The evening light really is special here and we cannot resist the photo opp. We head to the poolside Il Teatro for an Italian tasting menu dinner complete with wood fired pizza, handmade pasta, and ingenious wine pairings. Never have we had such fancy pizza but it proves an idyllic end to a day filled with adventure and relaxation.

WORDS by BECKY POMFRET
Previously The Savoy, the hotel’s glamorous £27 million transformation is nothing short of spectacular. There’s a feeling of the French Riviera to the setting, while a kidney shaped pool, cabanas and fantastic sea views give off serious Miami Beach vibes – it’s far from traditional British seaside. We’re not the only ones to be impressed by what we see: locals are visiting in droves to partake of top-notch cocktails and delicious food, while the first hotel residents have been giving rave reviews to the sumptuous suites and uber cool interiors. It is evident that this is so much more than simply a place to lay your head. A central location means that the amenities of the town centre are easily accessible, meanwhile, at the hotel, there are yoga classes on the lawn, paddle boards and kayaks available to take out on the sea, and bicycles to borrow for a spin. The ethos is wellness combined with fun, and when the new spa opens next year – complete with treatment rooms, an indoor pool and even a salt grotto – this will be even more in evidence. A stunning infinity pool that will stretch out from the terrace is also planned, and a roof-top bar will open next year. Admittedly, we’ve been lucky with the sunshine, but it seems there would be something to do here whatever the weather –like the hotel’s cinema room, which offers three different age-appropriate screenings every day. The décor throughout is a vibrant mix of tropical greens with gold accents. The airy reception, which leads into the bar and restaurant, is decorated with gold palm trees and bright modern art pieces; there’s a grand piano and even a retro Playboy Bunny pinball machine. Accommodation is offered in over 70 rooms, some boasting private hot tubs, while others are dog friendly. We are booked into a stunning sea view room with a huge terrace, complete with sun loungers that look out onto the pool and the sea beyond. As we crack open a chilled bottle of wine, we remark that we really wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. Small but oh-so-important touches like a Nespresso machine, fresh milk in the fridge and complimentary rum in a decanter on the cocktail trolley make our stay very comfortable indeed. A huge bath, fluffy robes and full size (much kinder to the environment than minis) MALIN+GOETZ products add to the luxe feeling. We spend an inordinate amount of time in the bar and restaurant area (perhaps not a surprise to those who know me). Breakfast is a joyous affair with an array of delicious pastries and fresh bread, as well as all the usual continental and cooked options, and then some. Dinner, too, is a treat, served by knowledgeable and friendly staff; we tuck into fresh oysters, squid ink tagliatelle, tender fillet steaks and retro desserts including a banana split. Don’t leave without trying a South Beach punch served in individual gold pineapples. Or ask the team to spark up a fire pit and sit outside with a Don Johnson cocktail (the Miami influence is strong here!). In the absence of the hotel spa, on our last day we head to the Saltwater Sauna just up the coast in beautiful Sandbanks (thesaltwatersauna.com).

Every so often, on a hot day in the UK, it’s hard to imagine why anybody would ever want to travel abroad (especially given this year’s airport issues). This is very much on our minds as we arrive at Bournemouth’s most recent 5* hotel opening, The Nici, which is perched on the town’s West Cliff. Views aside, the location is enviable – it’s an easy cab ride from the station, or a short walk, depending on your luggage/energy levels. With its stylish décor and vibrant bar and restaurant, The Nici has seriously upped Bournemouth’s hotel game
The authentic Finnish wood-fired sauna has a large window looking out onto the beach and we bask in the glorious heat, soaking up the views for ten minutes at a time, before running, shrieking, into the sea to cool down. BOCONCEPT “When you combine pleasing proportions with beautiful colours, materials and craftsmanship, you create a design that evokes a good feeling,” says eminent furniture designer Morten Georgsen. The designer has been working with iconic Danish brand BoConcept for over 25 years and his latest piece, the Lund glass cabinet, is part of the brand’s New Kollektion, which launches this September. Crafted in black metal with clear glass at the front and sides, it is a timeless piece that reflects BoConcept’s ethos: expert craftsmanship, quality without compromise, and unique Danish design. Understated luxury at its best.
SWOON Swoon is a brand known for its use of luxe materials: think plush velvet upholstery on settees and chaises, acacia cabinets with rich brass frontages, and art deco-inspired lights clad in gleaming golds. But beyond the glitz, these thoughtfully designed products offer shrewd functionality and crucially, longevity. “We seem to be taking extra time to search for better quality, better value products,” says Sam Baldry, the brand’s Head of Design. “We’ve seen a rise in popularity in more luxurious, premium furniture pieces, which feature superior build quality and textiles made to last… This trend of investing in premium pieces rather than impulse buying is set to stay.”

Camilla Clarke, Creative Director at Fitzrovia-based interior design studio Albion Nord believes that we should “consider texture to be as important as colour and pattern” when designing a luxury living space. “There is nothing worse than a flat design,” she says. “Interiors are all about evoking the senses and therefore texture is a vital ingredient to every design to get our sight and touch senses going. St John’s Wood based antiques expert and broker Perry Field of Simply Sold explains the different ways he works on behalf of his clients report, as well as tax planning. This means that many clients are making the decision to dispose of their valuables whilst they can deal with it themselves, releasing much-needed capital to their family and friends during their lifetime. Some clients have even appointed us as executors in their wills to ensure the fair disposal of the chattels and goods in the event of their passing, so that their loved ones are not left with the heavy burden of sorting out this part of the estate. I believe there are many potential tax benefits in doing this, and with the cost of living increasing dramatically, it has been essential in some cases to turn assets into cash sooner rather than later. Many people assume that we deal only in antiques, but this is very much not the case. We also deal in modern pieces from the likes of Lladró , Halcyon Days, Lalique and Tiffany & Co., and, of course, we sell lots of silver, gold, watches, and costume jewellery. I also have buyers who will pay good money for designer clothing and accessories – Asprey, Gucci, Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton are highly sought after, as are good quality furs. We have even sold cars for clients on occasion and managed the sale of property for overseas clients. Specialist knowledge can make all the difference when it comes to achieving the best price – with our help, selling items of value has never been easier.

Anyone familiar with Bell’s work will know that the natural world is central to all she does. And just as her illustrations depict bold botanicals and fantastical outdoor scenes, so her apartment reflects her love of nature. “I’m a country girl born and bred,” she says. “I’d trade a large kitchen for a large garden any day. The bigger the garden for me, the better. I love working out there, chilling out there, pottering about and planting flowers, and I love nothing more than hosting dinner parties in the garden on a warm evening.” Describing the décor as “a complete evolution”, Bell explains how the look has come together organically over time, and jokes that she’s essentially made it up as she’s gone along. “Learning on the job, as with most things in my life!” She explains that the way she decorates mirrors her process of making art. “I have a strong knowledge of what I love and what inspires me, but I never know what the result will be. There is always an element of surprise in my style.” And the flat is full of surprising elements, from the intricately hand-painted wall friezes to the detailed woodland dioramas that sit on top of side tables and chests of drawers, not to mention pieces from her own shoppable collection, including a beautifully hand-painted floral jug that sits between trailing spider plants and a bunch of dried hydrangeas. “From painting willow trees and mushroom forest floor scenes on the walls, to pressing flowers and framing them, to drying out bouquets of hydrangeas and keeping them as decoration, nature is everywhere you turn. Maybe it’s the inner country girl within me needing and craving that medicinal dose of nature,” she smiles.
Living in a basement flat has its pros and cons,” says Bell. “A pro is that the two bedrooms have double doors that open into the garden, so on the weekends I open my curtains and doors, sit in bed with my coffee, and look out into the garden. A con is that we have a lower ceiling, which means I need to create as much space and light as possible from the inside.” The illustrator and designer co-owns her Ladbroke Grove flat with her sister but now shares the property with her best friend Ellie, who she’s known since school. “She’s a natural nester and homemaker,” reveals Bell. “She has wonderful taste and is a fantastic cook. My favourite thing to do after work is to come home, light the candles, make dinner with her, and catch up over a glass of wine.” Bell moved into the flat following the first lockdown of 2020 and soon got to work on making it her own, removing much of her sister’s furnishings including carpets and cupboards. “We have pretty different tastes!” she says. “I wanted the place to breathe. By moving out these ornaments, I was able to create space. They absorbed a lot of light, and I wanted to brighten things up. I painted the bedrooms in tender green and light sage greens to give the feel of clean, fresh air in the flat.”
“Golborne Road is my favourite street in London”, she says. “I love its hustle and bustle, and its strong sense of community. It has a lot of creative dwellers and great places to eat, drink, shop vintage and shop antiques. I live less than two minutes away, and it still feels just as exciting and stimulating as it did when I first moved here.” Naturally, visual art plays a huge part in Bell’s life and that’s also reflected in the flat, in which no wall is left bare. The cosy living room acts as a gallery space with its vibrant mix of contemporary artwork, photography and graphic illustrations. “My art pieces are pretty special to me, and I have a real addiction to buying art from artists I love,” she admits. “It’s an expensive habit but so timeless and worth it. I love creating a mini gallery and to be surrounded

Bell’s furniture choices too are far from ordinary, with a carefully curated selection of vintage finds and pre-loved antique pieces in the apartment. “I rarely buy something brand new,” she says. “I never really go out looking for things, but if I happen to pass something that I love and can picture in the flat, I’ll bring it home.” And the magpie-like artist is perfectly positioned to stumble across unique pieces, with Portobello Road Market on the doorstep, not to mention wider Notting Hill’s wealth of antique treasure troves. In fact, for Bell, it’s an inspiring area all-round.

Bell’s favourite spot in the flat is her bedroom, which she describes as a sanctuary-like space in which she can read, relax, switch off completely and simply be herself. “It’s like my little bubble, which I can escape to, be still and have some peace. I have many moments of overwhelming gratitude that I have that room to myself, and it has the best city in the world on its doorstep. I love my bed and its baby pink scalloped headboard, and it’s covered in my cashmere cushions and throws from a collection I did with Madeleine Thompson. Russell comments: “I had previously worked with Octagon very successfully on a house located only a few hundred metres down the road, which I sold in 2014. With such a complicated and sensitive build on the horizon, it was imperative we had the best team working on the project, and the quality of build synonymous with the Octagon name is second to none.”
With planning submitted and approved, building work began in early 2019, carried out by a dream team of architects, interior designers, landscape architects and a developer, who all truly understood the brief. The result is a light-filled five-bedroom home, all with en suites, with a large living/kitchen space and expansive 12m wide floor to ceiling sliding doors that allow for a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors, showcasing the beautifully landscaped garden. If you’re worrying about whether your child should start senior school at 11 or 13, then open day season (and the dinner-party debate it brings) may add to your stress. But according to Catherine Stoker, founder of The Independent Education Consultants, visiting potential schools could actually help you decide. “An open day is your first chance to talk to senior schools about the right time for your child to move,” she says. “They’re very aware of parents’ concerns and happy to talk you through the system. And you get to compare the support structures How would you sum up the school in a sentence? A truly holistic and child-centred SEND provision with high expectations and aspirations for all students, supported by highly skilled, passionate professionals. What makes it different? For many of our students, their schooling experience to date has been extremely challenging and for some, very negative. At AHSC, each student receives an individualised education in a mainstream-style, inclusive environment. We measure progress, achievement and success from each student’s personal starting point. Students develop skills and knowledge that allows them to become independent learners and achieve independence and success beyond our doors. How would you describe the atmosphere? Positive, diverse and inclusive, with a real sense of belonging. Students feel safe and supported, and – critically – happy. And as our recent inspection report observed, there’s a clear generosity of spirit in the school, which I’m extremely proud of. What about your personal educational ethos? If you teach students how to learn, and empower them with selfconfidence, self-awareness and resilience in a trusting and safe environment, they can and will realise their full potential. How do you look after pupils’ wellbeing? Anxiety and mental health issues can be huge barriers to learning. We’re working with Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools and have achieved the School Mental Health Award – Silver Status. Through this ongoing collaboration, we’ll continue to review, evaluate and innovate our mental health and wellbeing support. This ranges from daily informal check-ins and small-group support to weekly lessons in social and life skills and termly school wellbeing days. Nonetheless, in most cases, she advises keeping your child at prep school until 13. “Education is about the development of skills and the individual, not just test results,” she explains. “At the top, you get positions of leadership like prefect, head girl or captain of the rugby team, and a bit more freedom. Leave at 11 to join a senior school and you’re the baby.” The exceptions are if you’re moving from the independent sector to a state grammar, where waiting until 13 will undoubtedly make things more difficult. Or if you think your child has outgrown their prep school. Ultimately, though, it’s about sticking to what your gut tells you will make your child happy, and not being swayed by the opinion of others. “A happy child will achieve their potential,” says Catherine. “So if being stretched makes them happy, or they have a talent like swimming that the prep can’t fully support, then it’s fine to start at 11. The important thing is to think about where your child will become the best version of themselves.” independenteducationconsultants.co.uk

Preparing for the future Preparing for exams without putting undue pressure on children is a challenging goal and takes skilful teaching. Parents are increasingly tuned in to the importance of children’s mental health and expect schools to develop their resilience to cope with the competitive nature of secondary school exams. For children at Heathside, the focus is on enjoying learning – a happy child learns well and by nurturing an individual’s progress, children thrive and want to do their best.

ith so many different factors to consider, finding the right Prep school can feel like a daunting prospect. Co-ed or single sex, traditional or progressive, local or a commute away? What about class size, exam results and destination senior schools? With careful research, these defined factors and measurable results are usually relatively easy to understand and enable parents to make a short list of preferred schools. However, it doesn’t end there. Head or heart? Choosing a school takes more than just using your head, and my advice to parents is to use your heart, too. Think about how a school feels, it’s a deeply personal choice, with no correct answer. Call it a feeling, culture or ethos, it’s this element that really defines whether a school provides the right fit for your child, and it can only be discovered by visiting the school in person. With restrictions lifted, good schools will welcome visitors and be glad to show parents around, so they gain a genuine sense of how the children are looked after and the atmosphere of every class. By meeting senior leaders, preferably the headteacher, and spending time talking to staff, whatever their role, you’ll get a real feel for how a school is run. Ask yourself whether your child would feel comfortable here, whether your family would fit in, and whether you can see yourself becoming part of the fabric of the school. The final questions to ask are: do you have confidence that the school will bring out the very best in your child? Will it understand their individuality, their learning style and, in the true definition of education, bring forth what is within? Keeping childhood special A broad curriculum, a stimulating range of clubs and excellent pastoral care are all expected at a good Prep school. So, what else can a school provide that makes it stand out? At Heathside, spending time on Hampstead Heath is a central part of our school. We use the natural environment to stimulate children’s imaginations and allow them to enjoy free play, climbing trees and building dens. At Heathside, we believe this provides essential balance to a rich and varied curriculum and the pressures of modern city life.

2. Would your child suit a hands-off school where they are independent and required to show plenty of self-motivation? Or perhaps they need somewhere they will feel encouraged and supported – enjoying success without undue pressure.
Choosing an independent senior school for your child is one of the biggest investments most parents will make, and as such is often fraught with anxiety, writes Lindsey Hughes, Head at Channing School the schools you like, and whether they see your choices as a good fit for your child.
1. Are they academically able and motivated by challenge? Would they be happy at an overtly academic school and enjoy competition? This sort of environment might demotivate some, who compare themselves unfavourably to others – they may be better off somewhere they can feel that they’re near the top of the class.
A final plea from a Head who spends much time dealing with pupils’ fear of tests: the next five years of education will bring their fair share of tests, so please don’t put your child through lots of 11+ exams! While you may feel the need to hedge your bets, please consider your child’s wellbeing in the process. It’s important that both you and they are calm and confident that there will be a positive outcome, whatever that might be. Iam going to take it as a given that your child being happy is your first priority, although sadly there are parents who choose schools based on name, rather than what will fit their child. Begin by thinking about your child’s attributes and characteristics.
And then, fundamentally, what are the ethos and values of the school, and do they match yours? It’s important that your child is at a school where you support the aims and attitude of the Head and the staff so that you can work in partnership with them for the good of your child. You may already know a lot of schools by reputation, but ideally you need to narrow your selection down to two or three main contenders. You should visit the schools in person if you can. Talk to your primary school Head about your choices: ask what more they can tell you about
3. Does your child have particular interests or talents e.g. in music, sport, art or drama? If not, they would probably suit a school where they can dip in and out of everything.
2. Will your child make local friends (sparing you from ferrying them long distances)? 3. Do the finances work? Schools offer bursaries that are worth investigating.
Consider the following:
You will also want to think about the practicalities of wherever you choose:
1. Do the location and transport options work?
NEXT STEPS
4. Would they suit a single-sex environment? The benefits include a lack of gender stereotyping and the freedom for children to be themselves. But it’s your child’s character and personality which should help guide your decision here.

This approach has been in place since the school’s foundation and the 11+ academic outcomes bear witness to its success. The girls do not live on a diet of 11+ examination practice in isolation; the curriculum in Year 5 and 6 is created with equal focus and importance being placed on drama, music, sport and clubs. Alongside exam preparation, they are engaged in enriching drama opportunities such as participating in the Young Voices concert at the O2, taking part in the Shakespeare in Schools programme, enjoying performances at artsdepot and producing their own yearly upper school summer production at the Phoenix Theatre. Sport also provides a wonderful antidote to the intensity of academic endeavours, with the girls engaged in cross country running, netball and football, with weekly fixtures arranged throughout Year 5 and Year 6. The girls are also encouraged to take on leadership roles, including those of Head Girl, Chair of School Council, Wellbeing Prefects, House Captains, Arts Ambassador and House Captains. In these positions of responsibility they are seen as exemplary role models by the younger girls, further enhancing their self-esteem, confidence and sense of Theself-worth.11+timetable at St. Anthony’s is a dynamic and stimulating programme, allowing the girls to embrace new challenges and begin to recognise their skills, talents and potential, while enjoying a broad, inspiring and academic programme, free from unnecessary and any counter-productive constraints. It is a winning formula: happy, successful girls enjoy the best of childhood while paddling their canoes towards 11+ success. “I would do it all again!” commented one very happy Year 6 girl.
St. Anthony’s School for Girls is renowned for achieving outstanding results in the 11+, with this year being no exception. In Spring 2022, the then Year 6 girls secured places and scholarships at a range of highly competitive schools, including South Hampstead High School, Francis Holland School, Channing School, Queen’s College, St Margaret’s School, North Bridge House, Belmont School, Queenswood School, Northwood School, Dwight School and boarding schools such as Wycombe Abbey School. Like those before them, the success of the class of 2022 is proof of their ambitious, hardworking attitudes, and the support they receive from highly dedicated teachers and committed parents. The ethos at St. Anthony’s is to ensure that the girls are not only taught to pass examinations in isolation, but also that they acquire the skills, knowledge, and confidence to embrace secondary school with confidence. This is achieved through the school’s 18 Month Curriculum, which begins in Year 5, when English, mathematics and science are taught by specialists in classes no greater than 12-14. Furthermore, individualised, bespoke learning pathways are in place, ensuring that all girls make consistent, concrete progress. Focus groups, helping hand tutorials and extension workshops are scheduled for everybody. Thanks to this, the girls grow in confidence, secure in their knowledge and confident to speak up and say: ‘I need help here’, ‘I don’t understand’, or ‘I would like to try a more challenging question’. In this way, the girls become independent and self-assured. The care and attention they receive from truly committed teachers inspires them to try new things, to be unafraid to make mistakes and to remain steadfast and focused on finishing a task.

St. Anthony’s girls are independent and preparedself-assured,forlife, not just exam success
At St. Anthony’s, pupils and teachers strive for mastery in all academic areas. In the Languages Faculty this translates into gaining appropriate fluency combined with grammatical certainty. The 10-year-old’s sporting joust was a delight to his teacher, Matt Evered, the head of the Languages Faculty, as the student had demonstrated the skills that had been carefully cultivated in a recent series of lessons about organising future activities, alongside an ability to communicate that comes from a meticulously planned structure to achieve appropriate fluency. To the untrained ear, the boy may have seemed to be fluent in his jibe, however, his teacher could see the fruits of building structure upon structure, alongside a deep learning of key vocabulary, aside from the names of the respective football clubs.
At St. Anthony’s School for Boys in Hampstead, learning languages gives the boys confidence, provides them with an opportunity to express themselves, and helps them to find joie de vivre
F
THE LANGUAGE OF LEARNING
un is at the heart of language lessons at St. Anthony’s. In response to the class warm-up song of Aujourd’hui,ça va, ça va? Mon ami, ça va, ça va? (to the tune of That’s the Way by KC and the Sunshine Band), one Year 6 student managed to simultaneously impress and taunt his teacher by answering: “Ça va bien, parce que Arsenal va gagner le match de foot contre Manchester United le samedi prochain”. In doing so, he demonstrated both his confidence with the near future tense and in his football team’s dominance over his teacher’s team.
The staff of the Languages Faculty at St. Anthony’s have a strong belief in the concept of appropriate fluency, which allows the boys to communicate clearly in a manner which overrides the challenge of the breadth of an entire language. This encourages the boys to be creative in their writing and speaking, as well as developing a strong understanding of texts and the spoken language that they encounter. To achieve this, a ‘Languages Pathway’ has been introduced at St. Anthony’s, which provides a bespoke, step-by-step approach to help achieve key levels of language proficiency at each level, most St. Anthony’s boys are encouraged to be creative in their use of languages

Between Reception and Year 2, the boys learn French using a communicative approach. From songs to story-telling the students become familiar with the key sounds of the French language, as well as learning to respond to simple questions. A particular highlight is the fantastic teaching of French colours, using the adaptation of a class favourite The Day the Crayons Quit, or Rébellion Chez les Crayons, if you will. The boys are very fortunate to benefit from expert language teaching from such a young age, which allows them to be prepared for the next steps in their journey.
From Year 3, still in the Junior House, through to Year 5, the boys are introduced gradually to the concepts that allow them to feel confident and secure in their learning: the grammar.
While once this was seen as an onerous task for pupils and teachers alike, the staff at St. Anthony’s are passionate about making the explicit learning of grammar both accessible and fun. The repetitive use of new grammatical structures and a scrupulously chosen range of vocabulary allows for the boys to gain a foothold with the nuts and bolts of the language.
The well-thought-out pathway introduces and builds upon the understanding that the boys have of grammatical concepts, both in English and French. A range of techniques, from the ever-catchy verb conjugation songs to the modelling and repetition of the extensive processing approach, allows the boys to master the necessities that will help them to get to grips with the Key Stage 3 curriculum at an early age. This approach of ‘teaching up’ is an expectation at St. Anthony’s, where all boys are supported, at the same time as being stretched to meet their potential. The staff in the Language Faculty support this by always remembering to make the learning relevant. Relevance is treated as a central tenet to language education: before every lesson, teachers ask themselves whether the learning is relevant to what the boys want to achieve, to their interests, to their world, and to how they learn. From Year 6 to Year 8 the boys are taught Latin, with lessons structured in a very similar way to French lessons – but with not as much speaking and more gladiators! The addition of Latin to the boys’ curriculum allows them to feel the ‘relevance’ in how they learn languages, as the shared terminology and approaches to learning make them feel empowered. For example, the boys can ‘tap-out’ a verb conjugation in both subjects, which gives them a great sense of understanding, even if it looks like a slightly passive version of the Haka! With the addition of Spanish and Mandarin enrichment classes, the boys’ horizons are expanding and the Languages offering at St. Anthony’s is becoming broader and more engaging. The enthusiasm of the boys in the Senior House to use the Mot de la Semaine (Word of the Week) to try to outdo their classmates is testament to the confidence and enjoyment they gain from their language experience. A residential trip to Normandy for the senior boys is also hugely popular, providing another opportunity for the boys to practise spoken French in context. Language learning at St. Anthony’s is an exciting journey. Bon voyage to all students starting out on the path this new school year…
importantly to allow all of the boys to achieve their potential.

FARMERS’ MARKET, NW6 Local foodies in the know flock to this Saturday market, which is held in the forecourt of West Hampstead Thameslink Station. Goldschmidt & Howland’s Mark Watkinson tells us it opens come rain or shine. “Produce includes free range, organic meat and poultry, fresh countryside organic fruit and veg, dairy products and even seasonal herbs and flowers,” he says. “One of my favourite stalls is ‘Pasta e Basta’ where you can pick up some freshly made pasta with a choice of sauce, accompanied with a slice of mature cheese from Brinkworth Dairy’s stall – delicious!”
The former Decca Studios in West Hampstead might not be as well-known as the Abbey Road Studios, though it was here that David Bowie recorded his first album and it is also where The Rolling Stones were first signed. But when The Beatles came to audition in early 1962, they were shown the door, with Decca’s head of marketing reportedly telling them that guitars were on the way out!

With its glitzy art deco inspired interior, West Hampstead dwellers don’t need to travel far for a dose of Gatsby glamour: think plush velvet seating and an architecturally styled bar, dripping in gold and glass. The venue is open late, too, boasting a fittingly hedonistic 1am closing from Thursday through to Saturday. Jade Andrews from Aston Chase describes Heads + Tails as “a quirky little cocktail bar. It boasts an intimate vibe, with tasty, seasonal cocktails curated by the staff themselves.”

HULLABALOO, NW6 Soft play can be a godsend for energetic kids and worn-out parents alike. Thankfully, there’s a multicoloured play space right here in NW6. Justin Shulman from Chancellors says, “As a father with an active 5-year-old daughter growing up in West Hampstead, this is one of the most enjoyable of distractions for both of us. I feel safe with my daughter playing there and the refreshments and staff are always fantastic.” Indeed, while your kid’s going wild in the ball pit, you can grab a well-deserved coffee and cake and support Hullabaloo’s charity in the process. MEET THE LOCALS
The spacious 1930s houses on this tree-lined street have been built in an attractive arts and crafts style and boast off street parking and large gardens, perfect for families
A favourite of mine is the Curled Leaf, a tea house with the most delicious tea selection and vegan food options. It’s run by Alketa, a distinctive local artist, and everything on the menu is freshly made and well-priced. They make the most refreshing lemonade, which has been much needed during the recent heatwave!
If I am not working from my Studio, I would head to new Greek bakery Opa! for some traditional spanakopita (and a bit of Greek chitchat) and then make my way to Mill Lane to work from a café there.

“No longer Hampstead’s poor relation, West Hampstead has amenities to match any affluent residential area in London. Sale and rental values have increased recently, especially in roads within walking distance of the station. Current sale prices for a garden flat are £800,000 to £1.5m depending on size and location. Houses are generally £1.5m to £3m, although there are others above and below those figures, depending on size and condition.”

COMMENTFrom agentsour
Fay MeyerMarkopoulou-
When I think of West Hampstead, what comes in mind is a vibrant place of creatives and families. There is a real sense of community here, which is very rare to find in London these days, and also a plethora of great school options. As a mum, my day typically starts with getting the girls ready for school. We have been very fortunate to get them into North Bridge House West Hampstead, where I recently completed a magical library space for the kids to play and relax in. Most of my interior design projects are residential, so this felt like a refreshing break, and it was a lovely experience to work on something so different.
Interior Architect, Studio Fay Ltd Sam Gould, Chestertons “West Hampstead continues to be one of London’s most desirable locations. West End Lane, West Hampstead’s main high street has an array of restaurants, shops and transport links including Marks & Spencer, Waitrose, and the Jubilee Line. Prices primarily range from £800 per sq ft to £1,100 per sq ft.”
For a spot of shopping, I take a stroll down West End Lane where I can find everything I need. The Source Bulk Foods for unpackaged food staples, Roni’s bakery for bagels and a farmers’ market on Saturday mornings takes care of most of my food shopping. And there is a wonderful clothing boutique, Gomaa Design Studio, where I buy all of my hats. West End Lane is also home to a number of great restaurants. I would highly recommend The Wet Fish Café for a special pescatarian meal. You can really get a feel of the West Hampstead vibes here, and occasionally enjoy live music. And there is always Heads + Tails around the corner for the after cocktail. When I am with the kids I like to be out and about, weather permitting. Fortune Green Park and Sumatra Road Playground are only a short walk from our home and they are both such joyful places. People in this area are very friendly and open-minded and so a visit to the park usually results in meeting a friendly new local face! For longer walks we head to Golders Hill Park, an extension of Hampstead Heath, where you can find a small zoo and the best gelato! If it’s raining, we might head to the Sherriff Centre for some soft play fun, or if we feel artistic, plan a visit to Art4Fun for some pottery decoration. Pottery is a new passion of mine and it’s wonderful to be able to share that passion with the girls. Raising kids in a big city comes with many challenges, so being part of such a wonderful local community gives me great comfort. faymarkopoulou.com

Positioned on the second floor of a smart period mansion block is this impressive five-bed family apartment. There’s a whopping 2,375 sq ft of accommodation on offer, and it’s all unmodernised and waiting for a buyer with vision to snap it up and put their own stylish stamp on it. There’s certainly work to do, but, importantly, this is a property with good bones: think light-loving high ceilings and beautifully preserved period features. The rest is up to you…

On the second floor is the principal and second bedroom, both of which are en suite and benefit from an expansive terrace, while the ground floor comprises two further bedrooms (or versatile office space for those working from home), a large family bathroom and even an internal garage.

CHARITY high Kudos to Ben Curtis from Winkworth’s St. John’s Wood office, who recently took on a dare-devil sky dive to raise vital funds for St John’s Hospice, an independent charity located within NW8’s St John & St Elizabeth Hospital. Favourite architectural style? Gothic. Penthouse or garden flat? With my growing family I would probably say a garden flat, but I do love penthouses!
“Unmodernised properties are around five per cent cheaper on average than modernised homes in the same area, so it can be tempting to think that they represent a better prospect financially, but our research shows that it can cost up to 15 per cent of the original value to bring such a property up to a suitable standard. And in London the spend is likely to be even greater. While an unmodernised home in the Capital will cost almost £32,000 less on average, the average homebuyer will spend almost £115,000 on renovating it, an overall overspend of £82,600 versus buying a modernised home to begin with! If the appeal of the doer-upper comes from being able to start with a blank canvas and really put your own stamp on a property, go for it, but think carefully about the finances before committing.”
