Yayoi Kusama: Small Pumpkin Paintings

So this intimate exhibition of smallscale paintings is an unexpected delight. Kusama’s family survived primarily off pumpkin dishes when she was a child – as the visual embodiment of her childhood and present psychological state, they are a form of self-portraiture. Viewed up close, you can see that these paintings are an amalgamation of two motifs she has revisited throughout her career: polka dots and infinity nets. Mesmerising.

Finding something fresh to say about Vincent van Gogh would faze most contemporary artists. Not O’Donoghue. O’Donoghue reimagines these paintings in the fields outside his studio, bringing them very much into his own territory. Actor Mark Stanley explains why the perfect career is one where he can play a series of roles where each is so different to the last that he never becomes too famous to pop down to the pub without being recognised

You’re probably trying to place Mark’s face, and, perhaps surprisingly for an actor, he’d be glad of that.

“The people who I admire, the Paddy Considines and the Cillian Murphys of this world, are the people who can maintain a private life,” he explains. In fact, what he wants most from his career, he says, is to “be able to chameleon-ise through parts and to have not done anything so notable that it ruins the idea that you can still put your flat cap on and go to the pub for a pint!”

But that’s not to say that you won’t have seen his work. In recent months alone he has appeared as Professor Bhaer, the German love interest of Jo March in the BBC’s adaptation of Little Women, and as James, the transgender character in Kay

Mellor’s six-part series Love, Lies and Records. But perhaps his most recognisable role is that of Grenn in Game of Thrones.

As first jobs go, that was pretty special. “I will never forget that first morning… Walking on to a set like that you are totally enamoured by how grand it is, and the amount of money that has been spent,” he recalls. “It gives you a great perspective. You suddenly realise that it is not all for you, and that you are there for it. You are just a small part of this huge machine of a show.”

Those years served as so much more than just a lesson in humility, though, Mark explains: “It was a great opportunity for familiarising myself with the industry, getting on the right side of casting directors and being able to go into FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

the audition room and prove myself.” Something he has more than done in the intervening years.

Next up for Mark is Joe, the male lead in Dark River, which is in cinemas now. A tale of sibling resentment set on a Yorkshire farm, it is the third film from gifted British writer-director Clio Barnard. “Joe is a character who has lived in isolation for quite some time. And before that he was living with a dying parent who he had been caring for alone,” Mark tells me. “We meet him at a time when Alice, his sister [played by Ruth Wilson], has just returned to the farm to reclaim the tenancy after 15 years’ absence. She feels it belongs to her, but Joe disagrees with that.

Having that sibling come home reawakens that broken familial relationship and brings to the surface a lot of past darkness and trauma to do with their father. That’s it in a nutshell.”

Mark recalls first reading the script, which was, he says “the best I had ever read,” but realising that the part of the alcoholic farmer in the male lead was supposed to be 50 years old. He was having some drinks with a friend, who persuaded him to send in an audition tape, which they did then and there, “a few ciders in”. The tape was accepted and Mark was invited in to meet Clio and Ruth. “As far as accepting the part, oh my god I jumped at it. It was one of the best phone calls I have ever had,” Mark grins. “I knew that someone like Clio is going to always look for the most real version of a character, but she also has to make sure that she is going to put bums on seats. I was overwhelmed, it really felt like one of those moments when someone champions you.”

Mark describes it as a passion project for all involved. “I see the film as a sort of poem, or a folk tale. At times we would really have to be dredging up emotion, so it was a very intense shoot, but not without its larks.” He is hugely curious to see

how the viewing public receives it. “I am really looking forward to seeing how an audience reacts to how ferocious the piece is,” he nods enthusiastically. “Get along there and see it yourself.

Prove them right in casting me… I hope I’ve done it justice.”

It is roles like this – ones that really get into the psychology of people – that appeal to Mark. “It wasn’t actually acting that turned me on to begin with. At A level I was hell-bent on doing psychology and sociology,” he explains. The joy in acting, he tells me, is getting to the point when you can be a bit more discerning about which jobs you take. “In the early stages you are just grateful whenever anybody tips the hat to you. Recently I have done a couple of jobs that have paid a decent amount of money, and that is like an investment into yourself. You can become a bit more strategic about what speaks to you.”

One role that has spoken to Mark is a project he is about to start working on. It is another British screenplay, this time from Scott Graham, with a working title of Born to Run. “It is a great character piece and I am really looking forward to it,” he says.

Based in the small Scottish town of Fraserburgh, and set over 24 hours, it is billed as a film about growing up in small towns, and a conflict between a father and a son.

Mark is the only non-Scotsman in the cast and says of the accent: “It is very much a work in progress, but I am chipping away at it every day.” And he is planning to spend time in Fraserburgh before filming starts. “I want to spend a whole day in a pub from 11 in the morning until 11 at night and just listen to people. See what they are about. What the mentality of the place is,” he tells me.

I wonder, if he had a choice, would he like to work exclusively on the big screen? “For me it doesn’t matter what the medium is as long as the story is good and the characters

are three-dimensional,” Mark says. In fact, right now, he wouldn’t say no to a bit more theatre. “At the moment my missus is working at the Royal Court and I have been bobbing in on a Friday night and having a drink in the bar and getting to know people there – the artistic director and that,” he tells me. “I really do think there is something special about that theatre, about that space and the new writers they are championing. I would absolutely love to work there. If I keep buying them pints maybe they’ll have me!” Mark laughs.

There are, apparently, both pros and cons to being with somebody who works within the same industry, but for Mark, it is largely a good thing. “At least you can talk about the same

things. I’m not sure how happy I’d be if she was talking about consulting or finance and I’d been sitting in all day listening to Radiohead and trying to find somewhere depressive in myself for the next role,” he grins.

And it means that they share similar goals and ambitions.

“We have just sent off for funding for a short film that she has written and I am directing,” Mark reveals, adding: “Sometimes it can feel like you procrastinate your entire life away, so we just want to get on with something, and if we make a pig’s ear of it, fine, at least we were brave enough to try it.” Whether or not this particular project succeeds, it seems inevitable that we will be seeing much more of Mark in the future.

Remy hair extensions at Beauty & Melody If there’s one thing in life we can count on, it’s enjoying that just-stepped-out-of-a-salon moment every six weeks, right?

Well, nope, not if, like me, you were born with thin, lacklustre hair.

Heck, the idea of the hairdresser drives me to drink. The thought of confronting my desperate do illuminated by bright lights and reflected in a huge mirror is torturous. For me, long, glossy, flowing locks – that hairdressing Holy Grail – will only ever be a pipe dream…

MORTIMER HOUSE KITCHEN I already have a soft spot for Mortimer House Kitchen before I’ve even sat down.

Having nipped to the ladies to freshen up, I spot a sign appealing to customers to not flush hopes and dreams down the toilet (along with other undesirable items). It tickles me.

While Mortimer House, with its work and wellbeing spaces, might be strictly members only, the restaurant is open to all. And a more appealing space you’d be hard pressed to find.

Set in a majestic Art Deco building in the heart of Fitzrovia, the restaurant is large and open plan.

The Deco details continue inside with parquet flooring, mirrored wall panels, feature lights, marble surfaces and vintage copper accents, while comfy sofas, Persian rugs and a forest of indoor plants give the space a warm, homely feel.

The all-day menu has been designed by chef Luca Unali (who comes fresh from the kitchens of Cecconi’s) and is largely Mediterranean, with hints of Middle Eastern flavour and a focus on sustainable, organic produce. It is a mix of small, medium and large plates, which all sound delicious, so ever mindful of over ordering, we give our waiter free rein to choose for us.

While we wait for the first dishes to be presented, we tuck into a complimentary basket of warm bread, served with a tahini dip. It is so good that before we know it, we are halfway through a second. Thankfully the first of the small dishes arrive to save us from carb comas.

Soft shell crab is served with a zingy yuzu, coriander and chilli dressing and we fight for the last piece. It seems things cannot get better, but the courgetti – bear with me – served with a pistachio pesto and smoked ricotta is divine, and, coming quickly on its heels, the ravioli with buffalo ricotta and black truffle is possibly the tastiest food I have ever eaten. The sea bass and slow cooked lamb shoulder dishes that round off the savoury element of our meal have to do some serious work to compete, but both are excellent.

This is billed as healthy food, but I’m certain that the quantities we have consumed do not a dieter’s meal make. One thing is for sure, though, every calorie was well and truly worth it, and I urge you to get down there. I’d go for the truffle ravioli every night of the week if I could. A BRYN THING Exciting news for fans of Odette’s, chef Bryn Williams is opening his first central London restaurant this month. Based in the gorgeous surrounds of Somerset House, it will offer a modern British dining format, with a strong focus on sustainability, seasonality and provenance. Fruit and veg will be the stars of the show – while dishes may not necessarily be vegetarian, those components will always take centre stage. Expect the likes of roast young broccoli, olive tapenade and sage beignet with scorched Cornish mackerel, and poached rhubarb and blood orange trifle. Interiors, designed by Rosendale Design, marry herringbone flooring, Welsh-printed upholstery and brown leather banquettes with a colour theme of textured blue, and nautical details (including wall lights made of Fresnel lenses from lighthouses), to reflect both Bryn’s Welsh roots and the building’s naval history.

Open throughout the day, Bryn Williams at Somerset House will also be home to a draught beer bar.

EXTENDING YOUR LEASE: THE UNHAPPY MUNDY’S A much-awaited Court of Appeal decision did not deliver the lower landlord premiums that leaseholders had hoped for.

Now, more than ever, tenants with leases set to fall below 80 years should act promptly, says Guy Osborn The chances are that if you live in flat then you own a leasehold property. Your lease is a depreciating asset, the shorter it gets the less it is worth; if it expires completely you may have to hand your property back to the landlord.

Fortunately all is not lost. The aptly titled Leasehold Reform, Housing and Urban Development Act 1993 gives you a right to extend your lease by 90 years at a peppercorn ground rent in return for paying your landlord a premium. If only it were as simple as that…

Since 1993 landlords and tenants have been arguing about many things, but mainly about what is the correct premium to pay. Somewhat unsurprisingly, tenants are keen to pay as low a premium as possible and landlords to achieve as high a one as possible.

The premium is calculated in accordance with a somewhat complicated statutory formula,

which has kept both lawyers and surveyors busy since the legislation was passed. The formula is based on the length of the lease and the value of the property; indeed, one of the only times you will hear a London homeowner declaring at a dinner party how little their property is worth will be while a lease extension is ongoing.

Tenants waited with bated breath for the decision in the case of Mundy v Trustees of Sloane Stanley Estate, which was delivered in January 2018. If successful, it promised to slash the cost of the premium that a tenant would pay for their lease extension. But in a David and Goliath-like contest, Goliath came out on top – the landlord was successful and premiums remain calculated by the method that they were previously.

The long and short of it is that nothing has changed. Tenants seeking to extend their leases

are almost always better off doing it sooner rather than later, and in particular before their leases fall below 80 years, after which it becomes much more expensive.

It wouldn’t be Easter without GAIL’s. We begged them to share their recipe for the best hot cross buns in the world™ but apparently it’s a closely guarded secret! They have, though, told us how to make these show-stopping cookies, which are almost as good.

Hop to it… (gailsbread.co.uk) INGREDIENTS For the biscuits 150g cold, unsalted butter, diced 240g plain flour 30g light brown sugar 30g caster sugar 1 tsp fine sea salt For the icing 110g, sifted icing sugar 1-2 tbsp lemon juice

METHOD 1 In a large bowl, using a pastry knife (or your fingertips), break the butter into the flour. Keep rubbing with your fingers until the mixture is crumbly and resembles coarse breadcrumbs.

Add the sugars and salt and bring the mixture to a dough.

2 Transfer the dough onto a sheet of baking paper and knead it for a minute or so. Cover the dough with another piece of baking paper and press the dough evenly between the two sheets. Using a rolling pin, roll out the dough (still encased between the two sheets) until 5mm thick.

3 Transfer onto a baking tray and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours.

4 When you’re ready to bake, pre-heat the oven to 160°C. 5 Remove the shortbread from the fridge and peel off the top baking

paper. The dough will be hard, so leave it for 5-10 minutes to relax.

Dip your favourite cookie cutter in flour and cut out your shapes.

6 Transfer the ready-to-bake biscuits onto a baking tray lined with a sheet of baking paper.

7 Bake the biscuits for 20-25 minutes. They should stay pale golden brown.

8 Remove from the oven, leave to cool down for 5 minutes and gently transfer onto a cooling rack to cool down completely.

9 To make the icing, sift the icing sugar into a bowl. Add the lemon juice and, using a wooden spoon, gradually stir until the mixture is the consistency of thick cream – you may need to add a little more lemon juice if too stiff.

10 When the biscuits are completely cool, ice them with the lemon icing.

The first thing I cooked was… breakfast. Probably an omelette.

My kitchen heroes are… Anthony Bourdain, David Chang, Yotam Ottolenghi, Tim Hayward and – of course – the whole team of chefs at The Good Egg. My fail safe dinner party menu is… pizzas and flatbreads cooked in my bread oven. I built it myself in the days before we set up the restaurant.

Back then I’d spend all of my free time cooking or reading about food.

Nowadays, with two restaurants, free time is a luxury!

My last meal on earth… could, I fear, actually be breakfast this Sunday because Alex (fellow co-founder and head chef of The Good Egg) and I are running a half marathon that day.

Hopefully we make it home afterwards for some gala pie and a Guinness.

When I feel down I make… sandwiches, with half sour pickles, mustard and salt beef on homemade rye sourdough.

My favourite London restaurant… changes constantly, but I go back again and again to the original Morito in Exmouth Market, and a tiny Lebanese restaurant called Meza in Tooting that my cousin introduced me to.

My ultimate London day… would be very low key. I’ve lived in Stoke Newington all my life and love being here, so I’d make the most of the neighbourhood. I’d be up bright and early for a morning run with Alex, before heading home for a big breakfast. Then I’d probably steal our head chef Duncan Jooles’ dog and hang out in the park. The evening would be spent eating and drinking with friends.

A Portuguese paradise

Striking the right balance between indulgence and family fun can be tricky, but a glorious week spent at the Pine Cliffs Resort in the Algarve proves that perfection is possible WOR DS L I Z SKO N E JAM E S

long boardwalk stretches through the pristine sandy dunes, and beyond it, the ocean sparkles in the fiery light of the setting sun. I sit in the clifftop bar soaking up the view, glass of chilled Champagne in my hand and my family around me. Things are good.

‘Catastrophic’ might seem like an extravagant word to describe British Airways’ IT failure of last May, but until you have had to tell a three-yearold that, having arrived, suitcases in hand at the airport, they will no longer be going on holiday, you have no idea how apt a description it actually was.

Falling as it did on the first Saturday of half term, it proved impossible to find alternative flights, and so we spent a squabble-filled week at home, putting on smiley faces for family outings to the farm and the soft play, while grieving for the villa in the South of France that was not meant to be ours. We were – eventually – handsomely compensated for our ‘inconvenience’ and began making plans for a bigger and better holiday.

Provence was out, Portugal in, and woe betide anybody who dared to suggest self-catering, or BA, come to that.

Wanting a real break from everything, I selected Pine Cliffs, a Luxury Collection Resort. Friends who had visited in the past promised uncrowded beaches, a dizzying array of restaurants, an all singing, all dancing kids’ club that the youngsters wouldn’t want to leave and a wonderful, award-winning spa (the biggest in the Algarve, no less). We’ve only been here for a few hours, but so far, so good.

Home for the week is a glorious twobed Ocean Suite. It is so luxuriously appointed that you could move right 56 |

in and want for nothing. The huge master bedroom boasts an exquisite open plan bathroom with his and hers vanity unit and a vast freestanding tub complete with ocean views. The fully equipped kitchen is togged out with a dishwasher, washer-dryer, microwave, stove and cabinets filled with a fine array of dinnerware and glasses. It is a shame I will not be cooking.

We have enjoyed a relaxed early dinner in the Corda Café (pizzas for the youngsters, local seafood for us), and now we are toasting the start of our holiday in the majestic surrounds of Mirador Champagne Bar. And, amazingly, nobody minds the kids being here – their welcome is every bit as warm as ours.

We find the same is true at breakfast the next day. The buffet, laid out in Jardim Colonial, is like nothing our eldest has seen before and he sets out to consume as much as humanly possible, taking in everything from porridge to pancakes via boiled eggs and biscuits. And he is delighted to discover more chocolate-themed breakfast options along the way than he ever dreamed possible.

Fuelled for fun, we drop the boys at Porto Pirata, where we have booked them in for a morning session – leaving us to enjoy some grown up time. Staffed by a friendly, and more importantly, qualified, team, the club is based around two wooden pirate ships, and covers almost two acres.

There is a bouncy castle, mini golf, swings, scooters and bikes (along with a track to race them around).

It is the stuff of kiddie dreams and we are dismissed with barely a backward glance.

We promptly hotfoot it to the spa, where we have treated ourselves and booked in for a couple’s massage.

It seems inconceivable that better is yet to come, but it is. We discover true peace in the Aurum Suite afterwards.

Lavishly decorated in gold, with its own steam room, sauna, jacuzzi, experience shower and lounge area, it is the ultimate pampering experience.

Not least because we have been left a chilled bottle of bubbles and a divine platter of chocolate-dipped fruit to enjoy along with the facilities. Oh to stay here all day…

Admittedly, things could be a whole lot worse than the poolside loungers, which are our post-spa lot. We spend a peaceful hour reading beside one of the resort’s many pools, enjoying a deliciously cool dip when the heat gets too much, before heading back to pick up the kids.

Sporting pirate facepaint and full of tales of treasure hunts and other

adventures, they are keen to go back for the afternoon session but we decide instead on lunch at the Beach Club, followed by family time at the beach.

Accessed via a glass elevator with some of the best views from the resort, Praia da Falesia’s golden sands stretch for almost 7km, and, set against the striking red cliffs and clear, blue seas, are a sight for sore city-dwelling eyes.

We could spend all week flitting between pool and praia, with a few sets of tennis on the resort’s courts and a round of golf here and there, but we fall into a pattern of relaxing in the morning, and heading out post lunch to explore. Positioned just outside Albufeira, the best of the Algarve is but a short hop from our base at Pine Cliffs: from the buzzing marina at Vilamoura we take a boat trip to the spectacular Ria Formosa Natural Park; we while away a few hours in

Loulé, a city of artisans filled with wicker and pottery craft workshops; at Alte we wander through the picturesque narrow streets, snapping pics of the gorgeous Algarvian white houses; while in Tavira we delight in the appealing mix of traditional Portuguese architecture with deeprooted Moorish influences. But always we are glad to get back to Pine Cliffs, which has quickly begun to feel like home and where we are always welcomed with big smiles and the friendliest of greetings.

Saying goodbye at the end of the week is difficult, and there are tears (not just, I am ashamed to say, from the three-year-old). We are barely back home, yet already pining for our Portuguese paradise. It goes without saying that we will be back – for luxury, family fun it would be hard to find better.

Incredible India

An explosion of colour, a cacophony of blaring horns, an assault of smells and the most extraordinary food on earth – a trip to India proves a delight for all of the senses WOR DS L I Z SKO N E JAM E S

t the time when my contemporaries were bumming around the world on gap years, I was pursuing other dreams in my quest for magazine editing fame (ahem), and whilst I may have swapped Delhi belly and dubious travelling companions for a regular salary and a place to call my own in London town, I always felt a little like I had missed out…

So I come to my Indian adventuring a little later in life, which is no bad thing when it means I can swap dirty hostels for five star accommodation. Give me 200-thread count bed linen over bed bugs any day. Not to mention a glass of bubbles in the Plaza Premium Lounge at Heathrow to settle pre-flight jitters.

First port of call is Kolkata, India’s second biggest city. The former capital of British India, it is almost impossible to think of the city without picturing its poverty-striken masses, but locally it is regarded as India’s cultural capital – home to intellectuals and creatives. I am tired and jet-lagged, and my transfer from the airport leaves me reeling. The city is a mindboggling contrast of colonial architecture set against slum towns and sleek modern shopping 58 |

malls, there are people everywhere and the early evening air is punctuated by the sound of car horns blaring.

My base here is THE Park Kolkata, which just happens to be celebrating its half-century while I am in town. But while such a long history might suggest colonial old world charm, like all of their properties, THE Park group’s flagship hotel is strikingly modern and anything but ordinary – as the glittering disco balls in the lobby and iridescent tiled reception desk attest. It is no surprise to learn that over its 50 years, the hotel has always been at the epicentre of Kolkata’s nightlife (surprisingly sprawling for a boutique hotel, it boasts a cocktail bar, nightclub, pub and licensed late night café, plus three restaurants serving contemporary Indian, oriental and world cuisine, a poolside juice bar and a whole host of lavish function rooms).

The half centenary celebrations are in full swing on my first night, and everyone is invited. The music plays, the drinks are flowing and delicious food keeps coming. The hospitality is staggeringly generous, but as the clock approaches midnight the revellers show no signs of winding up. Exhausted from my earlier flight, I slip away, relieved to discover that my bed is blissfully comfortable and my beautiful room gloriously soundproofed.

The next morning, on the recommendation of a local partygoer from the night before, I pay a fascinating early visit to the colourful Kalighat Hindu temple, where the crowds are already gathering to pay their respects to the goddess Kali. This is followed by a leisurely breakfast at Flurys tearoom. Like the hotel, it is situated on buzzing Park Street, the city’s main thoroughfare and shopping street. Inside it is wonderfully kitsch, decked out with original Deco detailing, and it serves a delectable menu of contemporary confectionery in the style of a grand European café. It is easy to see why it has become a Kolkata institution.

A meandering tram ride serves as the perfect way to take in the city’s attractions. Kolkata’s network (and the trams serving it) appear not to have changed since colonial days, and there is

possibly no better way to become immersed in the local sights and smells: the colourful city buses and yellow taxis snarling up the roads; locals herding goats across busy carriageways; immaculately dressed school children heading to school, tiffin tins in hand; weaving bicycles laden down with improbable loads varying from hundreds of coconuts to enough bricks to build a small wall; delicious smelling, brightly coloured street food stalls; friendly football matches on the green open spaces of the Maidan and courting couples outside the Taj Mahal-esque white marble Victoria Memorial. And everything accompanied by a soundtrack of everhonking horns. It is bonkers but strangely beautiful.

In contrast to colonial Kolkata, Hyderabad’s old town is home to some of India’s most impressive Islamic architecture (in varying states of disrepair). It is still very much up and coming as a tourist destination, but with the Qutb Shahi Monuments and the Golconda Fort tipped for inclusion in the list of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, that is set to change. I’m keen to get in before the crowds.

Fewer tourists do not mean quieter roads, though, and after a nailbiting ride from the airport I am relieved to check into the calm of

THE Park Hyderabad, which sits in a coveted spot on the shores of the Hussain Sagar lake. I enjoy a sundowner on the glorious terrace – taking in the view of the lake, and the colossal stone Buddha statue at its centre – before heading for dinner, which comes in the form of a delicious, authentic Hyderabadi feast at Aish, THE Park’s fine dining Indian restaurant.

Early next morning I am back on the terrace for a group yoga session as the sun rises over the lake, followed by a leisurely dip in the infinity pool and a healthy breakfast. It is a serene start to what promises to be a packed day of sightseeing in the Old City, starting with a tour of the magnificent, sprawling Golconda Fort.

This fortified hilltop citadel was built by the Qutb Shahs in the 16th century. The climb to the summit is hard work in the heat of the day, but worth it for the views over the crumbling outer ramparts, to the domed tombs of the Qutb Shahi, and beyond that the distant shanty towns and the smoggy haze of the city centre. And close up the 21 granite tombs are even more impressive, sitting serenely in their landscaped gardens.

Sustenance is called for, and the award-winning Simply South proves a good choice for lunch. It is packed with locals – always a good sign – and the southern Indian food more than lives up to its promise. Set up for more sights, I make my way to Chowmahalla Palace, the opulent home of the 18th and 19th century Nizams.

The garden courtyards are gloriously peaceful after the manic buzz of Hyderabad’s streets, and the 19 enormous Belgian crystal chandeliers in the magnificent hall are a (perhaps somewhat unexpected) sight to behold.

There’s just time for a spot of shopping in the Laad Bazaar.

Famous for bangles (in their thousands) it is also a brilliant spot for people watching, though with the ever present crowds it is far from relaxing, so I am only too happy to head back to the hotel, where I have a wonderfully restorative massage booked at the peaceful spa.

Can you tell us a bit about the company itself, how and when it started? Excellare was started in 2012 with the vision to build contemporary new homes in the best locations in the UK. And how did you personally get into property? What was the appeal? My father was a partner in a large estate agency firm, which I joined after I left university. Prior to Excellare I was regional MD at Berkeley Homes before starting my own development company in 1998.

What can buyers expect from an Excellare home? Stunning design, attention to detail, and the best locations. Homes where every detail has been carefully considered, where high tech specifications make life easier, and where our green credentials help reduce running costs.

Tell us a little about your most exciting/inspiring projects.

We have constructed a number of fantastic top end houses under different banners including several ‘New England’ style houses in

Buckinghamshire; these are my personal favourites to date. We also built a beautiful house at North Park, Gerrards Cross. We are proud of all our houses and have many happy purchasers including prominent business leaders, TV personalities, Premier League footballers and international sporting celebrities. Our three current developments at Luscombe are clearly projects we are very excited about.

How have buyers’ expectations evolved in terms of luxury homes? What are the demands these days? Buyers’ expectations have increased beyond all recognition in the last 20 years. There is so much more information available now and a great deal of interest is generated through television programmes such as Grand Designs and lifestyle magazines etc.

How does the wider team of designers, architects and landscapers work together to create an Excellare home?

We try to ensure a coordinated

approach to all of these items through design team meetings etc. In the case of Luscombe, we commissioned David James to design all of the interiors, meaning that the design concepts flow through everything.

How do you ensure properties are sympathetically integrated into their surroundings, especially next to a protected landscape, without compromising the views?

Our strategy is to employ the best local architects who have an understanding of and sympathy with the setting – in the case of Luscombe this was David James Architects. The challenges are many, ranging from the aesthetic to protecting any wildlife that may be present; this project, for example, encompassed five badger setts.

What does the next year hold for new homes and Excellare?

Are things looking positive?

We sense an improvement in sentiment this year, which we are confident will lead to a positive sales environment.

When Yoko and her husband bought the house it had been overgrown with ivy for 30 years. Previous owners had added a ground floor extension and divided the space into three separate rooms. It was dark and claustrophobic.

Working with Ampersand Architecture, the couple demolished and rebuilt the extension, gutted the entire house and added two rooms in the loft extension to create a gloriously light-filled, fourbedroom home.

With its cool colour palette and liberal use of tactile natural materials, the aesthetic here is serene yet robust. It reflects the Japanese concept of ‘wabi-sabi’ – an acceptance of transience and imperfection. It’s an approach that chimes perfectly with the practicalities of living with three young children. Blue ceramic collection provides the cue for the living room palette, and vintage rugs provide pops of colour throughout the house.

We asked Yoko to tell Fabric readers a little more about this major refurbishment project and her career shift from corporate investing to architectural interior design.

What was it that made you decide to change careers?

We moved to London from Singapore when I was seven months pregnant with our first child. I left my job behind as we moved with my husband’s firm. A year later, I was looking for work in the City in the same field when the Great East Japan Earthquake hit the coast of Tohoku and all the TV channels were repeatedly showing footage of the tsunami. The weeks that followed were packed with job interviews but I couldn’t keep focused. I couldn’t read the

TechCrunch articles that kept coming into my inbox to keep up with the industry. All I could do was flip through interior magazines and feel hopeless while following the news. I realised I didn’t want to go back and that I needed to do something I would be happy doing even when I am 80. I stopped going to interviews and signed up to an interior design course instead.

How long have you lived here and what drew you to the property?

We’ve lived in the area for five years now, but we bought this house in 2015. A month after we started doing the works to our previous house, we discovered that I was pregnant with our third child and we needed more space than we were building. We really love the neighbourhood and we waited for an opportunity to come up. When this house came onto the market, we grabbed it.

What were the main challenges during the renovation? What did you wish you’d known before embarking on the project?

The main challenge was financial. The house needed a lot of work and the building work alone was taking up our entire budget. I had to put a lot of thought into what would make us happy on a daily basis and could not be compromised, despite the budget constraint.

What was the inspiration behind this design scheme?

When we first bought it, the house was in poor condition, but we loved the walled garden made of London bricks covered with ivy. So the back of the house is about connecting with the garden.

I chose Crittall-style doors to frame the view from inside. The steel and bricks are a winning combination. The rest of the house also follows the theme of reconnecting with the family and FABRICMAGAZINE.CO.UK

restoring our energy for our busy life. We have no TV or video games here at home (and the kids hate us for it).

Which is your favourite room, and why?

I love sitting at the dining table and gazing into the garden. Our apple tree bears loads of fruit in summer and attracts birds. Last spring, a robin nested under our ivy wall and three baby robins were born.

We could hear them from inside and watched them grow and fly away.

What qualities did you look for when you were choosing fabrics, furniture and accessories? Tell us a little about the vintage rugs in your home?

I am drawn to natural materials with a tactile texture. They age well and ‘grow’ with the family. I have a soft spot for vintage kilims. The colours from natural dyes are hard to replicate and soft shades of originally vibrant hues brighten up any space. Most of the rugs were picked up from my trips to Turkey – some from a shop inside Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar and others from a small village near Bodrum.

What’s your most treasured item in your home and why?

Plants. We started buying plants only after we finished renovating the current house as we were always moving before. We are learning to look after them. We killed a few of the succulents (they are really hard to grow!) but many others are thriving!

Any tips you’d like to share about renovating a family home?

If you have young children, I wouldn’t bother with a playroom. Instead, if you can, incorporate a floor space with lots of toy storage and small desk(s) near the kitchen (where you spend a lot of time). Inevitably you will step on LEGO bricks millions of times but it’s better than constantly shuffling their toys back to the playroom and being stressed about it. REGENT’S PARK Lying partly in the City of Westminster, and partly in the London Borough of Camden, Regent’s Park marks the northern-most point of central London, but that’s by no means the extent of its appeal. Almost 200 hectares of parkland make up Regent’s Park: the land was appropriated by Henry VIII as hunting ground and has remained Crown property pretty much ever since. In the early 1800s – at the request of the Prince Regent – architect John Nash designed a vast rounded park with an ornamental lake, surrounded by palatial terraces.

For an evening out, The Prince Regent on Marylebone High Street keeps four excellent cask ales, but my preference is The Bree Louise at Euston – 18 cask ales and 11 cask ciders (last time I looked), all kept in perfect condition. The hosts Craig and Karen are wonderfully friendly, they’re also very welcoming towards dogs and produce a bowl of water whenever I arrive with Dobby.

I live in the park, in a house built for the role in 1879 after the original park superintendent’s house was destroyed in an explosion in 1874 (it took down Macclesfield Bridge at the park’s North Gate – linking the Outer Circle to Prince Albert and Avenue Roads). It is a wonderful place to live and I spend a lot of my free time at home with my family. I also love to grow vegetables and bake all of the bread we eat at home, my favourite is a sourdough recipe of my own creation. And I have recently polished up my pizza skills!”

Why it’s right to be wrong One of the hardest things you can do as a parent is to watch your child fail. But according to a 2016 study by Stanford University, the children of parents who see failure as negative grow up to believe they can’t improve. Which actually makes them less likely to succeed.

It’s a phenomenon that Harriet Connor-Earl, headmistress of St. Mary’s School, Hampstead, knows well. “From a young age, we teach children to please us – by smiling or saying ‘well done’ when they get something right,” she says. “So when they enter the classroom, they choose the easier piece of work, to avoid making mistakes.”

Parents’ own aversion to risk can play a role, too.

“It can be scary to let your children take risks, because you understand the possible consequences,” explains Harriet. “But if they don’t build resilience, university may be the first time they experience failure – and some may even give up.”

St. Mary’s has tackled this issue by embedding “the 4Rs” – risk-taking and resilience, along with reflection

and respect – into everything it does. Girls can sign up to play their instrument at Cake Concerts, in front of pupils and parents. ‘Different’ sports and after-school clubs take them out of their comfort zones and teach new skills. And while the school makes it clear that no one can be 100 per cent brilliant at everything, it also teaches the girls to fix their mistakes. “We give them the tools to work on the things they’re less good at, and we reward them for trying,” says Harriet. “It’s the effort that counts, not the result.”

So what should you do if you struggle to let your child fail? “First, let them take risks,” advises Harriet.

“If they fail, say: ‘You can do it – you just can’t do it now.’ Then give them clear steps for how to get there.

Next, be a good role model: acknowledge and fix your own mistakes, and celebrate them as opportunities to improve. And finally, keep remembering why you’re doing this: to instil healthy learning habits that will make your child a better and more resilient adult.” (stmh.co.uk)

HOW TO REAP WHAT YOU SOW With the frosts gone, and plants back on the shelves, March is a great time to flex your green fingers again. Toby Davies, deputy manager of Camden Garden Centre, recommends adding some organic matter to your flowerbeds before you plant. “Soil improver adds nutrients and body,” he explains. “A layer of mulch, such as bark or slate, will also help to retain moisture.”

Mulch has the added bonus of suppressing weeds; should any still sneak through, drawing a hoe over the surface of the soil may bring them up.

Otherwise it’s on to your knees to pull them out.

“If you’ve got really stubborn perennial weeds, like brambles, bindweed or nettles, you might want to consider applying a weed-killer around now,” suggests Toby.

As for planting, geraniums and other summerflowering plants start to become available this month. You’ll also see a broad range of perennials, such as delphiniums and hardy geraniums, which will give you lovely colours come the summer. I’ve been fascinated by making things since I found my dad’s toolbox at the age of five.

KEEPING OUT THE COLD For the fourth year running, Chestertons turned its network of 22 London offices into donation points for the Calling London ‘Winter Coat Drive’. It was a record year for the campaign, with Londoners ransacking their wardrobes to donate 4,500 coats to help those in need keep warm, with 2,000 coming from Chestertons’ collection points.

The coats were distributed to more than 40 charities and shelters, including homeless charity St. Mungo’s, Crisis at Christmas and Dress for Success.

The Calling London Winter Coat Drive was established in 2010 to help Londoners in need keep warm during the cold winter months. Since launching, the campaign has continued to reach more people of all ages, who are sleeping rough or unable to afford a winter coat. Chestertons began its partnership with Calling London in 2014 and since then has collected over 5,500 coats.

Giles Milner, Chairman of Chestertons Charity Champions, said: “Our aim was to collect a record number of coats. Freezing temperatures and strong winds left some Londoners in a really vulnerable situation this winter.”
