Spring is in the air and I make no excuse for being excited. The sun rising over our handsome city in the mornings, the joyful sight of blossom appearing on once bare branches, and the first plucky daffodils flowering in our beautiful parks; there’s so much to be thankful for. If you fancy getting out in the open and embracing the spring, you’ll find information on volunteering for The Royal Parks in our Hot List (plus, of course, listings of all the unmissable things happening in our patch this month). Or perhaps spring has stirred you in different ways? If you’re looking to feather your nest this month, we’ve a host of Mother Nature inspired homes ideas on our Interiors News page, plus a feature that looks at the bold new aesthetic that’s making waves in kitchen design. All that, plus expert – and timely – advice from our agents and so much more. Until next time.

EXHIBITION
Flora Yukhnovich
OPERA
The Merry Widow
Until 13 April | London Coliseum Franz Lehár’s famed operetta has its turn in the glorious surrounds of the Coliseum this month, with a production of ENO firsts for director Max Webster and conductor Kristiina Poska. Sarah Tynan, who plays the vivacious Hanna, frequently treads these illustrious boards and returns for her second major appearance of the season. The soprano is joined by Nathan Gunn as Danilo, while ENO giant Andrew Shore takes on the role of the pompous Zeta. In a new translation sung in English, the action centres around the relationship between Hanna, a dazzling and wealthy young widow, and Danilo, who harbours an insatiable appetite for wine and women. St. Martin’s Lane, WC2N (020 7845 9300; eno.org)
Until 30 March | Parafin This recent City & Guilds grad draws on a history’s worth of art to create her own colourful canvasses. Tracing the connections between a visual language originating in the Rococo with today’s popular culture, she examines how notions of femininity, taste and beauty are encoded and reaffirmed before they’re ingrained into the contemporary aesthetic. In this, her first solo show at Mayfair’s Parafin, the young artist will display a series of new paintings that straddle both the figurative and the abstract: expect a cacophony of sensual colour explosions. Visual treats all round. 18 Woodstock Street, W1C (020 7495 1969; parafin.co.uk) fabricmagazine.co.uk

A drama of high emotional clout, it charts a compelling seven-year affair, thrillingly captured in reverse chronological order, and stars Hollywood stalwart Tom Hiddleston, who returns to the London stage for the first time since his acclaimed Hamlet at the Donmar in 2014. Hiddleston has said of the production: “Betrayal is a masterpiece. Jamie Lloyd’s Pinter at the Pinter season is terrific and I’m so pleased that he’s asked me to be part of it.” Panton Street, SW1Y (0844 871 7622; pinteratthepinter.com)

Equilibrium
Until 5 April | Mazzoleni
Giorgio Verzotti curates this intriguing group show on Italian sculpture, which investigates ideas of tutto tondo or, “in the round”, and examines each sculptor’s unique interpretation of equilibrium: the notion that a state of equilibrium is reached through a delicate balance of physical elements that make up each work. Artists include Vincenzo Agnetti, Elisabetta Di Maggio and Shigeru Saito, whose 2018 Prima del tramonto in brass is as beautifully delicate as it is a bold vision of strength. 27 Albemarle Street, W1S (020 7495 8805; mazzoleniart.com) 38

DANCE
The Thread
15-17 March | Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Russell Maliphant and his company of lithe acrobats, together with “choreographer of light” Michael Hulls, bring a world premiere to Sadler’s Wells this March. The Thread is inspired by Greek mythology and historic Hellenic dances, and explores the changing forms of traditional and contemporary dance, with costumes by the famed London-based Greek fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. But it’s not only a visual feast audiences are in for: the production is soundtracked by Greek composer Vangelis, best-known for his 1982 Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire score. Undoubtedly a production of epic proportions of which Apollo would be proud. Rosebery Avenue, EC1R (020 7863 8000; sadlerswells.com)

INTERVIEW
The sun is bright and the sky is blue. Cara Horgan declined the offer of a car to drop her at our shoot venue, declaring that it was only around the corner. It may look like spring, but it is bitterly cold and snow is on the way. “I’m so glad to be in the warm,” she exclaims, “it is absolutely freezing out there… I’ve had enough of winter now.” She’s not here to talk about the weather, though – I want to hear about Traitors, the television series in which she appears alongside Emma Appleton and Keeley Hawes.
The six-part spy thriller, set in postWorld War II London, is Boardwalk Empire writer and award-winning playwright Bash Doran’s first original commission for British television, and is currently showing on Channel 4, after which it is scheduled to move to Netflix. The story takes viewers behind the scenes in the Home Office during a seismic moment in history, as Clement Attlee’s Labour Party sweep to victory, defeating wartime leader Winston Churchill. A young woman called Feef (played by Appleton) is tasked with uncovering
a Russian agent in the heart of the Home Office: “We look into the lives of various suspects,” Cara explains. “Each episode explores a different personal journey; it is a very character driven piece, very much centred around how people rebuilt their lives, post trauma, in a period of great uncertainty.” Cara plays the part of Rae, a Jewish typist whose son was evacuated during the war and has just returned to London but barely remembers his mother. “It is a really tender story to play. And she is an interesting character because she has got a lot of secrets. She hides her religion from her employers, because – and I didn’t realise this until recently – there was still a lot of anti-Semitism in England at the time,” Cara tells me. “There were so many things that I just didn’t know until I started researching the part,” she adds. “Including that as part of the demobilisation act after the war, women in higher earning positions, but all sorts of professions actually, were just expected to step down

from their job, and to hand them over to the men who were coming back from the front.” Research is one of acting’s main appeals, Cara tells me: “I love that side of it, and then getting into the shoes of that person, and living as them for a while, and then shaking them off and letting them go.” What else appealed about the job? “For me, a large part of it was the team behind it. It was a female showrunner and writer, female exec producer, female producer, female director of the first block – so that was a huge appeal. And it was also really nice to play a character who has their own autonomous narrative and isn’t just an accessory to a man’s story. And we are still very much in a transition period of that being on the rarer side of things,” she explains, seriously. Filming finished last summer, but Cara has only seen parts of the final edit. Does she think it will be well received? “I hope so, you never really know, because you do the work, and then you sort of hand it

over. Seeing it in the tapestry of the final piece does change the way that you looked at it initially. You think that the piece is one thing, then you watch it for the first time and you think, ah, OK… I suppose you are baking your piece of the pie, then handing it over and waiting to see how the finished meal comes out.” The cooking analogy makes a lot of sense when Cara explains that had she not gone into acting she would have liked to work with food. “I find cooking really creative. Quite often, if I am stressed or anxious, I gravitate towards the kitchen. Because it requires a level of focus that takes me out of my own head.”
She also likes the idea of writing. “But I think I would struggle with being in a profession that is entirely solitary,” she muses. “One of the things I love most about being an actor is the collaborative nature.” Solitary time is sometimes good, though, Cara concedes. “I am a voracious reader. I find it incredibly meditative, sitting down with a good book and a cup of tea. And I find that it also massages all the same areas of the brain as acting – you are imagining how that character might talk, and how they move about in their world.” The acting world can be tough; things don’t always go to plan.
“You can do all the prep, and fall in love with the script, and imagine yourself doing the role, and feel like you have done a great audition, but then, for whatever reason, the director, or whoever, they just have a different idea,” Cara admits. She says that reading is one of the ways she has learnt to cope with this. “I think that headspace really helps. And feeding yourself creatively – going to galleries, watching movies… I am trying to learn French – my partner is French – but it is a very long, slow process.” “It is good to be inspired and informed by different creative expressions. I think it goes back into
your own work,” she explains. “I am often at the Tate Modern. I really like the V&A. The Portrait Gallery puts on some really excellent stuff, and the Serpentine. And there are so many smaller galleries that often have really good things on. It is a really lovely thing to go and immerse yourself in another art form. I am going to see Pina Bausch, a dance show at Sadler’s Wells next month.” The list goes on and on; in fact, Cara believes that we are spoilt for choice when it comes to culture in London, it is one of the many things she loves about her city. Traitors is on Channel 4, Sunday evenings at 9pm fabricmagazine.co.uk

It’s only too easy to resort to cliché when discussing skincare; claims by the practitioner can overreach to the point of outlandishness, and the prose describing the process become ever more purple. But in the spirit of Epilium & Skin on George Street, I will try to resist lazy epithets about French skincare as, whilst undoubtedly offering all that les Français are renowned for, there is something about the place that feels entirely fresh and original. As the London outpost of Dr. Bernard Hayot, the philosophy of the practice could have been written for me personally; a lightness of touch, that aims to leave clients looking not necessarily younger, but rather the very best version of themselves, achieved by judiciously employing serious treatments, up to and including plastic surgery. Dr. Bernard himself is the perfect embodiment of these values: his medical seriousness counteracted by his twinkly warmth and charm. I arrived with the vaguest of briefs; years of irresponsible living (sun damage, rather than anything more titillating) have left me with a number of complaints; widespread melanoma,

or dark pigmentation, lines that one could decreasingly describe as ‘fine’, and a gradual lack of elasticity that I am in denial about 90 per cent of the time. “Just make me look better!”, I implored. In the hands of a less diplomatic practitioner, what followed could easily have been anything from brutal appraisal to admonishment for sins past, but instead, we discussed using an intelligent mix of treatments – some botox here, a filler there – to target the worst of the lines, along with skinboosters; a new concept to me, these are microinjections of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance which boosts elasticity, hydration and brightness. The results take around two weeks to appear, and application on all three fronts was painless; after waiting a while for any swelling to go down, I was able to step out onto the Marylebone streets with no one any the wiser – the only giveaway being the spring in my step, happy that a fresher, brighter me was around the corner. Blossom Something beautiful is blossoming at Quaglino’s this spring. The culmination of a passion project for bar manager Marco Sangion, Blossom is possibly the world’s most sustainable cocktail. It has a base of organic vodka infused with the peel of purple carrots (used as a side dish in the restaurant), mixed with homemade jasmine milk (made by overcooking a small handful of jasmine rice, which is then blended to make a creamy solution similar to milk). A fruity twang comes from mandarin cordial (created
from the skins of mandarins that are freshly squeezed for another serve on the menu), while mint stick oil adds freshness and a gorgeous smell to the cocktail (bunches and bunches of mint are used daily in the bar, Marco and his team regularly make mint stick oil by blending the unused stems with organic olive oil). Finally, and most impressively, the vessel for this drink is made from homemade pasta, cooked and shaped onsite. We’ll toast to a guilt-free cocktail. 16 Bury Street, SW1Y (020 7930 6767; quaglinos-restaurant.co.uk)
When I was a child I wanted to be… a grown up. Now that I’m an adult, I envy the freedom and sense of wonder of my children. The first thing I cooked was… unmemorable. Though I vividly remember the first thing I cooked satisfactorily. It was a fried egg, under the tutelage of my friend Ivan, gently poached in and basted with brown butter, when I was about 10. A revelation.

It’s said the sequel is never as good as the original. Why risk ruining your reputation when the first is a cult classic? I’ve never visited Yeni Lokanta, acclaimed chef Civan Er’s original masterpiece in Istanbul, but Yeni, his second venture, in Soho, is a sequel worth sampling. We are greeted like old friends, warmly welcomed into the family and seated near the modest open kitchen. Here Civan keeps an eye on the evening. Why set up in London? He loves Istanbul for its blend of Greek, Italian and Asian influences. London, he says, is that same melting pot. A home from home. Spider-like chandeliers dangle from the ceiling, suspended over a simple layout. Made by Turkish artisans and flown into the Beak Street restaurant, each piece of furniture fits the lowkey, traditional look. The restaurant’s subtle aubergine motif is splashed across custom-made mosaic tiles, adding a drop of Mediterranean turquoise to the well-worn, white brick walls. Paired with a traditional orange wine – yes, orange – we choose three starters and a main to share, adopting the customary mezestyle dining. Each dish is beautifully executed, dainty in size, but beyond bold in flavour. From the classic çig kofte tartare with a contemporary aromatic heat, to the pan fried 12-month feta complete with spiced honey and salty samphire, these starters pack a real punch, each mouthful rich with a concoction of flavours I would never even attempt to put together. Our main, the signature roasted beef ribs with isot pepper and cumin on sourdough, is such a crowd pleaser, I’m assured this one will stay on the menu season after season. The rest of the ingredients are a combination of locally-sourced meats and fish, and Turkish and Greek delicacies like the soft Xigalo cheese. Eyeing up everyone else’s desserts, we order both options – the last thing we want to feel is the wretched diner’s remorse. Salted caramel panna cotta and a delicate cream-filled filo pastry are devoured quickly. And that’s my only regret: it all ends too soon. Can I get you anything else, our waiter asks? If Er’s original restaurant can better this, I’ll take two tickets to Istanbul please. EA 55 Beak Street, W1F (020 3475 1903; yeni.london)
bitter leaves and mustard. Happy, simmery, sociable food, scaled up ad infinitum. My last meal on earth would be… spent in the company of my wife and children, watching the sunset, huddled around a fire. I don’t care what food it is. When I feel down… I can’t even feed myself, let alone cook. But I do find washing up very therapeutic, so I’d start there. My favourite London restaurant is… Lyle’s for a lunch date; Orient London for family dumplings; Quo Vadis for naughty friends;
St. John for birthdays; Jen Cafe for a bowl of noodles and preserved greens... I could go on – I have one for every mood. My ultimate London day consists of… getting up early with my children, going to the park with a football, then heading to the West End for a quick blast of the medieval wing of The National Gallery, followed by dumplings, cinema, home and bed. COOK THIS
Rainbow Crepes It’s pancake day in March, which – in our opinion – gives carte blanche to eat them every day of the month. And you can do so almost guilt-free using this wholegrain, refined sugarfree recipe from our favourite north London healthy eating guru Emily Wright of The Wright Foodie. She says: “I love crepes so much. Each year when I tuck into the culinary delight that is a loaded crepe, I promise myself I will make them weekly, and yet never do. I am a firm believer that just one topping is never enough. I need options, but I always finish the experience with a lemon and sugar one and view it as some sort of sophisticated palate cleanser – like they serve in fancy restaurants! A sort of dessert after dessert if you will. This year, I wanted to make a wholegrain and refined sugar-free version of all of the classics, but without compromising on taste of course. Enjoy!”
INGREDIENTS
1 egg
METHOD For the crepes
Sift flour into a large bowl and make a well for the egg. Starting in the middle, combine the egg and flour. Slowly add the milk, a little at a time, and whisk together until all the lumps have gone. Stir through a pinch of salt. If you are making different colours, simply separate the pancake mixture into different bowls and add the natural coloured powders. Once you are ready to start cooking, heat a tsp of coconut oil or butter in a large, non-stick frying pan over a medium heat. Ladle in the crepe mixture and spread into a large circle. Cook until starting to go golden on once side. Flip over and cook the other side until golden too. Put aside until fillings are ready. For the fillings Yellow
Griddle thin slices of 1 lemon until they start to brown on both sides. Set aside. In a saucepan, mix maple

syrup, oat cream (I used Oatly) and tahini together. Heat on a low heat for 5 mins and whisk together. Squeeze juice from half a lemon onto one crepe, smother with maple cream and top with the griddled lemon slices. Pink
Melt dark chocolate on a low setting in the microwave, checking every 30 seconds. Once melted, add the hazelnut butter and heat on low for another minute, checking halfway through. Combine well. Dry fry the flaked almonds in a clean frying pan (no oil) over a medium heat for a few minutes, constantly shaking the pan to make sure they don’t burn. Carefully slice the banana in half lengthways and caramelise on a griddle pan over a medium heat until browning on one side. When the crepe is ready, slice the banana, smother with the chocolate sauce and sprinkle with the almonds.
Green
Pierce the marshmallows with a metal skewer and toast on an open flame until golden (I used the flame from my gas hob). Place several toasted marshmallows on the crepe, add the sliced strawberries and drizzle a little bit of the chocolate sauce used for your pink crepes. Blue
Put the juice and zest from the blood oranges in a small, non-stick saucepan, along with chia seeds and coconut sugar. Mix well. Heat slowly on a low heat for 10 minutes until a jam-like consistency has formed. Add a couple of tbsps to the crepe and sprinkle with shaved dark chocolate. To find out more about Emily’s services, and discover more delicious recipes, see thewrightfoodie.com
For the crepes 115g wholegrain flour (I used spelt) 1 egg 285ml milk (I used unsweetened oat milk) A pinch of salt coconut oil or butter for frying optional natural colourings 1/2 -1 tsp turmeric; 1/2 -1 tsp pitaya powder; 1/2 -1 tsp matcha powder; 1/2 -1 tsp butterfly pea flower powder For the fillings Note – the recipe makes 2 crepes per colour, so if you want more of one particular filling, just double or triple those ingredients. Yellow 3 lemons 3 tbsp maple syrup 3 tbsp oat cream (or normal cream if preferred) 1 tbsp tahini Pink 50g good quality dark chocolate 50g hazelnut butter handful of flaked almonds 1 banana Green handful of marshmallows handful of strawberries, sliced Blue juice and zest of 5 blood oranges 4 tbsp chia seeds 1 tbsp coconut sugar dark chocolate shavings

We’re lucky to be based in a vibrant city bursting with energy. March sees the annual Art Basel event, showcasing work from hundreds of galleries, half of them in Asia. A great opportunity for supporting the local creative community here, it provides an overview of the region’s diversity through exhibiting cuttingedge works by established and emerging artists. The Murray is proud to act as an official sponsor for the event. The cooler season is ideal for exploring. Start your hike from The Murray and head through the Hong Kong Botanical Gardens then along Old Peak Road. You will reach the Victoria Peak within an hour, where you will be treated to panoramic vistas of the city and Victoria Harbour. Reward your efforts with a visit to a secret tea house set in the lush surroundings of Hong Kong Park. LockCha Tea House offers traditional Chinese tea pairings with vegetarian dim sum dishes and musical performances. The hotel’s own Guo Fu Lou will be your choice for authentic Cantonese cuisine: I recommend the jasmine tea-smoked chicken; roasted crispy goose or the baked stuffed crab shell. 22 Cotton Tree Drive, Central, Hong Kong (+852 3141 8888; niccolohotels.com)

hite breakers buffet the turquoise sea at Crane Beach and wild waves lash the pink tinged sands. A few hardy swimmers brave the water, but we are content to wander along the shoreline and paddle in the shallows. Picture a Caribbean beach and you probably imagine something a little more serene, but there is nothing disappointing about this breathtakingly beautiful vista. After a week spent exploring the island’s offerings, I’d wager it is probably the most photogenic of all of Barbados’ beaches. We’ve chosen The Crane, a 5* hotel in the parish of St. Philip on the east coast of the island, for our first ever visit to Barbados. Established in 1887, it claims to be the Caribbean’s oldest continuously running hotel – with history like that, they must be doing something right, we reason. And first impressions are good; colonial-style, low-rise buildings, set on winding pathways lush with tropical vegetation, are arranged around a pretty ‘village’ centre featuring shops, bars and restaurants. Our suite is huge with a separate sitting area, fully-equipped kitchen and a bathroom with Jacuzzi bath. There’s also a private
plunge pool on the terrace, overlooking the resort’s pools and that stunning ocean view. After a glorious breakfast, eaten gazing out to sea, we spend our first day lazily adjusting to the time difference, happily beachcombing, relaxing by the pool and sampling the various bars on site. By sundowner time I am sunflushed, but it is nothing that a calming facial in the Serenity Spa cannot rectify. We choose to dine at Zen, The Crane’s Asian restaurant, and enjoy a very special evening. The sushi is delicious, but the highlights of our meal are the boneless duckling and the teriyaki chicken and beef: both are an absolute triumph. By day two we are ready to explore, and the hotel’s concierge team are only too happy to find us a taxi driver. Think chauffeur crossed with tour guide: Big D not only knows everything that’s worth knowing about Barbados, he also seemingly knows all of its inhabitants personally. Better yet, he’s happy to take us anywhere we want to go, and wait indefinitely to bring us back to the hotel afterwards. We are firm friends by the end of the week. And what a lot we pack in – with its British history very much evident, Barbados is an intriguing mix of

the familiar and the exotic. The Anglican churches and cricket greens contrast starkly with the plantation houses and the sugar cane fields. It is the beaches that really take our breath away though – from the surf of the south and the wave battered Atlantic coasts of the east to the calm, turquoise seas of the west, there is one for every mood. We are also enamoured with Harrison’s Cave, named after Thomas Harrison who owned much of the surrounding land in the early 1700s. Tours allow you to don a hard-hat and jump on a tram to explore the startling crystallized limestone cavern, complete with flowing streams, deep pools of clear water and towering columns of the living cave. It is truly spectacular, though perhaps not one for the claustrophobic. But the real highlight of Big D’s island tour has to be the fantastic Oistins Fish Fry on the Friday evening. It is a fish market with a clever sideline in delicious dinners, which are as popular with locals as they are with tourists. As the sun sets, we wander up the pier to spot turtles swimming in the crystal clear waters, and to feed them with fish guts that D buys for us from a local fisherman. We then tuck into a delicious supper of red snapper, marlin and flying fish. It’s the freshest fish we have ever eaten and the atmosphere is electric, with bars, dancing and copious quantities of rum punch. Our lunch the next day at The Tides in Holetown is a very different affair, but equally memorable. Entering through a charming courtyard we are led to a table right by the ocean, which is dotted with pretty sailboats and buzzing jet-skis: it is a pretty spectacular view. And the food – exquisite in both presentation and taste – easily lives up to the location. The highlight is gorgeously crispy pork belly served atop a smoked sweet corn risotto. Service is faultless, too – oh-so British, we get a little overheated as the sun moves around, but the attentive waiter shifts our table into the shade, and then eventually moves us into the blissfully air-conditioned section of the restaurant. Lunch finished, we head up the road to Nikki Beach Barbados. Upscale glamour in an amazing location, the club is just a short drive from Holetown. Part of the evergrowing Nikki Beach portfolio, this glamorous hot-spot is

set on 1.4 acres of pristine beachfront, and boasts a pool with luxury loungers and cabanas, a swim up bar with DJ, in-house saxophonist, percussionist and violinist, and an extensive menu of delicious cocktails and food. Watching the sunset here, we really are in Instagram heaven. On our final day we get up early in anticipation of an excursion that promises the perfect mix of sightseeing and fun. Cool Runnings offer glamorous catamaran cruises with opportunities to stop and swim in some of the island’s best snorkelling spots. The water is so clear and inviting, and the team on board so encouraging and supportive, that I overcome my usual nerves and manage to swim in the sea. I am rewarded by coming up close and personal with turtles, all manner of exotic fish and a sting ray, and find a whole new confidence in the water. With a free bar serving the ubiquitous rum cocktails, the Captain spinning some excellent tunes, and a feast served up at lunchtime, spirits are high, and we spend a very happy day dancing on the decks. If you’re lucky enough to visit Barbados this is definitely one for the to-do list. We’ve never felt as sad about heading home from a holiday as we do when the time comes to leave The Crane. The hotel has been the perfect home from home – with a large dose of luxury pampering thrown in – and Barbados has taken hold of our hearts in a way we never imagined possible.

INTERIORS Rotpunkt’s Zerox kitchen brings functionality and form together beautifully
Kitchen transcendental These are exciting times for high-end kitchen design: open-plan spaces allow for zoned, sculptural arrangements no longer confined by four walls, while creative ways with colour and texture bring an artistic edge to functional surfaces by Ali Howard

SCULPTURAL ASYMMETRY Broken-plan is the kitchen trend for free thinkers: with modular arrangements that rebel against conventional layouts, it opens up the market to new and exciting designs with a greater emphasis on furniture pieces that might once have been consigned to the peripheries: think room dividers, display cabinetry and multipurpose workstations. German brand Rotpunkt’s Zerox kitchen (on opening page), with its clean lines, wood worktops and patinated umbra marble finish, cleverly groups these elements to create a sculptural centrepiece that brings functionality and form together beautifully. From £20,000 + VAT (rotpunktuk.com) UTILITARIAN FOCUS Today’s kitchens have to work harder than ever, and that’s no more apparent than in an open-plan arrangement. Royale, designed by Marco Fabrizio Corti for Italian brand Rastelli (below), allows for a completely custom format, and in doing so, rebelliously breaks all the rules, not only blurring the lines between kitchen and living spaces, but between kitchen and living furniture, too. Functionality takes top priority in this no-frills yet super sleek kitchen with its open storage units facing outwards into the living space, designed to display eye-catching accessories, just as you would a living room cabinet. DARK MATERIALS Kitchen colour trends move over to the dark side; black surfaces are offset with rich coffee browns and softer shades of charcoal grey and muted taupe. It’s a daring progression for an area of the home so often associated with the most clinical of bright whites. Accessories and appliances follow suit (think powder-coated matte black taps and sleek and shiny black fridge-freezers). Kitchen Noire is the handiwork of DesignSpace London’s Gary Moor, who was tasked with creating a bold architectural statement of a kitchen in this west London warehouse (far right). Featuring handle-less cabinetry and hidden-away appliances for a super-sleek aesthetic. From £25,000 (designspacelondon.com)

THE RAW EDGE ‘High texture’ is one buzz phrase for kitchen design in 2019. Unconventional glass, metal and marble finishes, as well as masonry-style effects, all bring an inviting tactility to the otherwise sharp lines of the contemporary kitchen. Inspired by the lean towards raw materials in interior design, CRL Stone has added six new colour stories to its Ceralsio ceramic surface collection, including the luxurious Cervino Satin (top left) with its soft to the touch marble patina. As a porcelain surface Ceralsio is utterly impermeable, as well as being stain and scratch resistant, thermally stable and shock resistant, too. Worktops from £350 per sq m (crlstone.co.uk)

TWO TONE Gone are the days of strict uniformity in the kitchen, with less emphasis on matching units and more on bespoke cabinetry with character. Striking colour contrasts allow for a contemporary, design-led aesthetic – and a cheeky twist to the traditional. Two tone kitchens are big news this year. In this super sleek design from Hub Kitchens (left), an accent shade in the upper cabinets draws the eye upward and highlights its clean, modern lines with a bold stripe of colour. With its convenient push-to-open fittings and high gloss finish, those lines are pleasingly uninterrupted. Bespoke kitchens from £40,000 (hubkitchens.com)

ENTREPRENEUR Above: the aesthetic mixes mid-century with contemporary luxe Below: a sociable, ultra-modern marble island lies at the heart of the kitchen
Emilie Schou Raaberg Set atop a Victorian terrace in Primrose Hill, this two-bed duplex boasts an aesthetic of “deconstructed luxury”, thanks to Cat Dal Interiors by Ali Howard
Emilie moved into the two-bed apartment with husband Mads and their cockapoo, Jensen, two years ago. Transforming its former loft space into a bedroom while creating an entire new staircase was a project of significant heft for the Danish couple. “It required a new roof as well,” says Emilie, “as we added three dormers to give us as much height as possible in the bedroom. We also removed five dividing walls to fully open up the space.” Only if you’re planning to put down roots do you undertake such fundamental structural work, but when it comes to settling down you’d be very wise to do so here. Primrose Hill is one of the Capital’s most sought-after spots, after all. “It is amazing,” agrees Emilie. “Mads has lived in the area on and off for nearly ten years so he knows every nook and 62

cranny. The parks are beautiful and it’s got a unique little village feel. A dogfriendly pub nearby is a huge bonus, too!” But despite popular opinion, location isn’t everything. For Emilie and Mads, it was important to find a home that came with a strong sense of character, and so the choice between a period property and a new-build was a no-brainer. “I look for old buildings with charm and history,” says Emilie. “Even when the building ages, it does so with charm. A new-build can sometimes look outdated very quickly. We love historical architectural details, and try to keep these little touches where we can.” The apartment successfully mixes mid-century classics with accents of contemporary luxe: an iconic Eames leather lounge chair sits across from a sleek and chic Bert Frank Revolve lamp;

a vintage G-Plan sideboard runs parallel to the uber-modern marble kitchen island with its sharp angles and clean lines. It is the handiwork of Belgravia-based interior designer Cat Dal, whose brief was to create a home for the couple that was all about comfort and functionality, with great materials and craftsmanship. “Cat really just ‘got’ what we wanted,” says Emilie. “We loved being challenged with colours and materials that we wouldn’t have considered on our own. There are loads of lovely touches, such as the sunken bar within the media unit, and the gorgeous, uplifting cement tiles on the balcony.” From the drama of a plush velvet corner sofa juxtaposed with a whitewashed exposed brick wall, to the use of moody blues and dark marble in the bathroom, the apartment is a delicious visual feast. But the design is more than skin deep and involves some seriously smart tech, too: “Cat talked us into using an intelligent lighting system and we’re thrilled with it,” Emilie enthuses. “It’s great to have several moods programmed, so when we want to watch a movie and get cosy, we just flick one of the buttons and then the spotlights, wall lights and table lamps dim to the perfect level. It’s a luxury we really do enjoy daily.” Any interior designer worth their salt places a client’s lifestyle top of the list when

putting a scheme together, and here Cat has achieved, with the use of an open-plan space connecting living, dining and kitchen rooms, a series of zoned areas perfect for entertaining. “We both love having family and friends over for informal dinners,” explains Emilie, “so it’s great to start with drinks and snacks around the island while one of us is cooking, and then move to the banquette to eat.” Imposing industrial glass doors separate the main living area from the hallway, giving the entrance its own space, while a guest room is open to the rest of the flat, offering dual aspect natural lighting; Mads and Emilie simply have to pull a curtain across to give guests their own snug private area when needed. “As a Dane, I love considered, thoughtful design,” says Emilie. “Everything must have its place.” It is a design of utmost thoughtfulness and versatility. THE SECRETS OF A TIDY LIFE Designed and crafted in London, Neatsmith’s bespoke wardrobes and built-in furniture minimise clutter and maximise style, and, excitingly, they’ve just launched a new home office and study collection
With decluttering guru Marie Kondo’s Netflix show becoming a global phenomenon, there’s no denying that 2019 has got off to a tidy start. If your mess is causing you stress, now’s the time to get things in order. While it’s all very well knowing how to go about streamlining and learning how to fold your clothes, it is equally important having proper storage solutions in place: bespoke spaces that organise your possessions in a way that works for you and your lifestyle. When it comes to clothing, a fitted or a walk-in wardrobe can make day-to-day living much easier – being able to find what you want to wear, when you want to wear it takes the stress out of getting ready in the
morning. Not only that, but well organised storage removes clutter from the bedroom to create a more serene space for sleeping in. And the same goes for the study – if you’re a home worker, a calm, intelligent office space can make a big difference to your productivity. Neatsmith are experts in organised living. Established over 14 years ago, the family-run business is known for innovative design, specialising in bedroom units, with an emphasis on hinged, sliding and walk-in wardrobes. And, as of this year, they can also design and install bespoke home offices and studies – desks can be made in any depth, width or shape required, while file storage is designed to fit your own specific needs. Add to that
clever cable management, and even wireless charging points, and you’ll be wanting for nothing. The company employs a team of dedicated designers, cabinetmakers and fitters – it prides itself on quality. Throughout the installation process the highly skilled fitters will assure minimal disruption and superior service. Everything
is completely bespoke, and made entirely in the company’s north London factory. The attention to detail is extraordinary – drawers are fitted with full extension, soft-close Blumotion runners, that are guaranteed for life, and every sliding door has 10 wheels to ensure effortless closing. Units come in a wide choice of exterior and interior colourways and woodgrains to complement any design scheme, and bespoke colour matching is available. Designs can be further customised through lighting and handle choices, together with a range of useful accessories, from pull-out tie racks and shoe shelves to builtin laundry baskets and safes. As you might expect, the commitment to quality is matched by its dedication to customer service, which has won Best Customer Service in the Best of Houzz Awards three years running. To see the craftsmanship for yourself, visit one of their showrooms on the Finchley Road and in Teddington, Brentwood and Hatch End, or at the new flagship store on the King’s Road in Chelsea. THE KEY TO LESS STRESS School testing is tainting the golden years of childhood; exam stress is more prevalent than ever and is contributing to the mental health epidemic that threatens children from an increasingly young age. One north London school is addressing parents’ biggest worry for 2019* the subject to the curriculum, NBH Pre-Prep gained a Bronze Award for its outstanding commitment to P4C. As well as facilitating pupils’ ability to recognise and talk about big ideas, philosophy enables them to better articulate themselves; The Education Endowment Foundation stated that a year of philosophy results in two-month’s additional progress in Reading and Maths. “School pets also add enormous value to our community,” says Christine. “At NBH Pre-Prep
F
rom as young as four, children are sitting rigorous entry exams for private schools, while SATs testing looms at the end of Key Stage 1 in the state sector. Eager to support their children through the challenge, more and more parents are hiring tutors for their sons and daughters, spending thousands a year in a bid for low stress success. However, north London headteacher Christine McLelland is committed to providing pupils with a safe haven from the stress, avoiding external examinations at her Nursery and Pre-Prep Schools altogether.
Somewhat uniquely for independent schools within the competitive Hampstead marketplace, North Bridge House Nursery and Pre-Prep focus on providing a breadth of study not limited by exam preparation and testing. “We do not prepare children for the 7+ as the process can be very bruising for a child. We have seen confident and competent children crumble under the pressure, which has diminished their interest in learning and knocked their self-esteem. Instead we prepare children very well for the next stage in their learning through a broad and creative curriculum, promoting a deep understanding of the content taught,” explains Christine. The high-achieving schools saw nearly half of Reception children perform in the top four per cent of the country for English and almost half of the Year 2 cohort achieve in the top five per cent for English and Maths in their summer progress tests. To track pupil progress in a stress-free environment, Christine uses a progress test series which determines an age-standardised score for pupils, while they are prepared for natural progression to the Outstanding NBH Prep School without a formal assessment. Academic progress is enhanced at NBH by Philosophy for Children (P4C), a powerful approach to teaching and learning that boosts children’s reasoning, social skills, and overall attainment. Just one year after adding
we have three bantam hens, each named and very much loved by the children. They have been fantastic for the social and emotional development of the children… and perfect for a cuddle too!” The headteacher also transforms the school playground into a petting zoo for her pupils once a year, welcoming a family run farm from Cambridgeshire and an impressive menagerie of educational helpers. From alpacas and ponies to bearded dragons and hedgehogs, the Key Stage 1 children get to touch and hold the animals whilst learning all about the science behind their growth and development. “Happiness is the key to successful learning – particularly in the formative years of education – and we are committed to providing children with an enjoyable learning experience, which both reduces the stress they face and teaches them how to deal with it,” concludes Christine. Did you know?
Eight hundred acres of Heath, three bathing ponds and a Lido – if you like fresh air and open skies, you’re onto a winner with Hampstead. But if the great outdoors isn’t your bag, NW3 has enough independent shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs to keep even the most dedicated urbanite happy. Not to mention a buzzy cultural scene (hardly surprising given that for centuries the village has been a magnet for artistic and bohemian types). If you’re looking to settle in this delightful corner of the Capital, there are properties to suit every taste. Grand Georgian townhouses, cute period cottages, Victorian terraces, Edwardian mansion blocks and a smattering of contemporary developments – Hampstead’s housing stock is nothing if not eclectic. Once settled, you’re likely to stay – NW3-dwellers are a loyal bunch. And should you ever feel that you’re falling out of love with London, the heart-stopping views from Parliament Hill will rekindle your passion. Guaranteed
Hampstead is blessed with the sort of green space that makes other neighbourhoods green with envy – while you’re probably familiar with the Heath, you may not have discovered the almost otherworldly beauty of The Hill Garden and its Pergola. Dating from the early 1900s, they were the vision of Lord Leverhulme, who owned the attached house and wanted to create an extravagant pleasure garden for parties and promenades. He employed Thomas Mawson, celebrated town planner and landscape architect, to design a raised garden and walkways which made the most of the beautiful views. The ground was raised using soil dug up for the tube tunnels of the Hampstead Northern line extension, which was being constructed at the same time. The contractors were so keen to dump the tunnelled spoil, they actually paid Leverhulme a small fee to get rid of it for them!

THE LITTLE BLACK BOOK Annette Rose Bespoke jewellery designer
“I have lived in Hampstead for 35 years and I love the village feel and sense of community. Although Hampstead has changed quite substantially in
those years there are still some old gems around, like the Villa Bianca for a lovely dinner with friends or Judy Green’s Garden Store for beautifully potted plants, which make the perfect gift. I love that I can get all of my fresh food from Jenkins and Son green grocers at the Hampstead Community Market; fresh meat from Meat Naturally and fish from Hampstead Seafoods, right behind the Post Office. I design most of my jewellery in my boutique on Perrins Court, choosing materials from my bead collection that I have built up over the past 50 years. I never run out of ideas, but
when I need a break I just wander across to Ginger & White for the best coffee and a freshly made frittata. One of my favourite things in Hampstead is the Heath, where I enjoy taking my two dogs for a morning walk up to Kenwood House. There are some magnificent ancient trees and stunning views over ponds and meadows, which inspire me greatly. On my way home I sometimes bump into my grandchildren, who all go to school locally, which is a real bonus.” (annetterosejewellery.co.uk)

Christine McLelland Headteacher at North Bridge House Nursery and Pre-Prep Schools What attracted you to the school? The warm and friendly atmosphere – from the longstanding and very capable team of staff to the Friends of North Bridge House parent group. But above all, the children – they’re so confident, talkative and engaging.

The internet has made the world very small. So small, in fact, that children can travel anywhere, and talk to anyone, from their phone or tablet. (Subject to parental controls, of course.) And employees can collaborate with far-flung colleagues as if they’re next door. No wonder schools and employers are talking about children needing to become “global citizens”. But what exactly does that mean? “There are two sides to global citizenship,” says Adela Kay, director of outreach at Forest School in north east London. “One is being part of a worldwide community and the other is taking responsibility for it – for example, by changing the way we treat the planet.” To build this attitude in its pupils, Forest leads by example: one staff member taught refugees in Lesbos last summer and has since set up a postcard exchange. It promotes volunteering (which is mandatory for sixth-formers) and supports a student-led Amnesty International group. And it’s set up an exciting exchange programme with the Aurora Shanghai Modern Foreign Languages Middle School in China. The idea is for Forest’s pupils to practise their Mandarin while meeting people from a very different culture. Its teachers can also learn new educational approaches. So far, Aurora staff have visited Forest School and vice versa. The visits revealed that while the schools use different discipline and delivery methods, their aims are the same: building citizenship along with inquisitiveness. Pupils from Shanghai will visit London this June and students of Mandarin from Forest will head to China in April 2020. Until then, there are plans to set up a pen pal scheme and use video conferencing to run joint lessons. But what if a school isn’t quite so progressive? “You can encourage your child to read newspapers, like The Week Junior or First News,” says Adela. “Trying cuisines from around the world, and travelling as much as possible will teach them to expect and welcome difference. Take a look at online resources, too, like gogivers.org and oxfam.org. If you can help your child to engage with people from very different cultures, you’ll broaden their mind and set them up for the future.” (forest.org.uk)
What makes it different? Many things, from the calibre of staff to the enthusiasm of the children who initiate conversation so readily and achieve excellent academic outcomes. Our on-site chickens are also quite a novelty and our charity work has even been recognised by Meghan Markle. How would you describe your personal educational ethos? Mistakes are marvellous; learning ‘sticks’ when mistakes are made. If a child can spot their own mistakes and try again, we’ve taught them successfully. How do you balance extracurricular activities with the academic side? From LEGO® coding to yoga, we offer a huge variety of after-school clubs to enable children to develop talents and interests beyond the curriculum. We also have outstanding art and music provision, plus a very popular LAMDA offering. How do you look after your pupils’ wellbeing? The excellent relationships between staff and children ensure that pupils feel safe and able to talk to anyone at any time. We make full use of our large outdoor spaces and provide dance, gym, games and swimming lessons along with nutritious meals. PSHE and Philosophy for Children also enable children to explore issues important to them. Fitzjohn’s Avenue/Netherhall Gardens, NW3 (020 7267 6266; northbridgehouse.com)

It’s this open, energising atmosphere, believes Cave, which inspires a love of learning that extends well beyond formal exams and into adult life. Tucked away behind wrought iron gates in a quiet corner of Belsize Park, Fine Arts College has an enviable reputation as a school that draws out students’ individual talents in an atmosphere that one parent has described as “industrious informality”. Alongside a full academic curriculum, it offers an exceptional range of art-based subjects – including fine art, textiles, film, photography and graphic design – with students’ work in these disciplines being recognised by institutions such as the Royal Academy of Arts. Unusually, there is no restriction on subject combinations, so students are free to create a study programme that is tailored to their strengths. An original vision Principal Candida Cave, a graduate of the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford, founded the Fine Arts College in 1978 with fellow artist Nicholas Cochrane. It started life as a specialist sixth form college for art and art history with just 20 pupils; numbers grew and in 1982 a
full arts and humanities A Level curriculum was added. By the early 1990s, a GCSE programme was in place, and the college was thrilled to welcome its first Year 9 pupils last September – a natural entry point to prepare for GCSEs. Fine Arts College also offers a Portfolio course, aimed at preparing students for Art Foundation. Its founders always saw the college as a bridge between school and university, a place that encouraged self-discipline and self-motivation, and this distinctive philosophy is still very much in evidence today. As Cave points out: “The informal nature of relationships between staff and students strengthens high expectations and encourages a rigorous approach to work.” Outstanding teaching and facilities The students at Fine Arts College are fortunate to be taught by staff who, as well as being highly experienced educators, are often distinguished musicians, artists, filmmakers,
A unique ethos Entry to the College is based on academic and creative potential, rather than prior academic performance. The process varies slightly at GCSE, A Level and Portfolio stage, but references from previous schools and an informal interview play an important part. The College’s ethos is rooted in the belief that, with the right encouragement, students can flourish academically and creatively. The school prides itself on being able to identify and nurture talent that may have been overlooked in other school environments. Small class sizes, outstanding teaching and excellent pastoral care make this possible. And it is reflected in the impressive results achieved: last summer, students celebrated a nine per cent year-on-year improvement on A level results. Leavers have gone on to a wide range of prestigious destinations, including Russell Group and US universities and elite art colleges such as Central Saint Martins and Parsons School of Design in New York.

Property news Favourite place? Kenwood; I love the unspoilt beauty and total absence of vehicles. Favourite place to grab a coffee? I’m a coffee enthusiast, but my current preference is for juices and in particular Joe’s Green Mile from Joe & The Juice. Where do you go for headspace in the city? I am privileged to work literally across the road from Regent’s Park, which is where I head when I need to draw breath. Period property or newbuild? Period carcass with contemporary interior.
60 seconds with... Mark Pollack Aston Chase Years in the business? Scarily, 41. I started straight from school at the age of 16. If not London, where? I am a Londoner born and bred, so wouldn’t contemplate working anywhere else. It is a great city on multiple levels, but I particularly love the amount of trees and green open space notwithstanding the dense population. First London home? An apartment featuring a large rose window in the UK’s first residential church conversion on Cromwell Avenue, adjacent to Highgate Hill.
If I wasn’t an estate agent I’d be… a criminal barrister. Favourite London Street? Mount Street in Mayfair. Most memorable sale? An amazing, understated house located right on the edge of Hampstead Heath, at the highest point in London and thus featuring uninterrupted views of the Heath and the city beyond. Any hidden talents? Good question. I think I’m fairly creative and am something of a frustrated landscape gardener on the quiet!
Take one person, dead, alive or fictional, out in London – who and where? I would like to take Mauricio Pochettino to the soon to be opened ‘new’ Tottenham stadium before he loses faith in ‘the project’! Aliens attack – which London landmark would you save? The Natural History Museum, which is an architectural marvel, in addition to effectively being a treasure trove of our past. Creature comfort? Our super king bed and Savoir bespoke mattress would be sorely missed, closely followed by my 60" flatscreen television, as I love watching sport and nature documentaries when I need to switch-off.
Psst... Congratulations to the nine Fabric agents who won themselves a coveted place in trade journal PrimeResi’s Prime Movers Index of the Capital’s top 50 boutique agencies. Topping the list was Beauchamp Estates… well done to everyone, we couldn’t be prouder! 76

Q&A
Nouri Momtazi Vita Properties Q. What do buyers want in a property with outside space? A. “We’ve certainly seen a rise in recent years of the number of applicants prioritising outside space in their property searches. This is particularly evident in the areas we cover (Hampstead, Swiss Cottage, Belsize Park, etc) which have a much higher rate of families with children or pets, who can make practical use of a garden. However, in today’s modern world, a garden is not just there for practicality; people want their garden to feel like an extension of their home rather than separate from it. So putting a bit of time and money into landscaping your garden to balance with the décor of your home is worthwhile. The number of buyers looking for outside space is only going to rise, especially as the rate of pet ownership continues to soar. Having a garden is a fantastic selling point, and particularly in London where properties with outside space are more rare, you should be maximising on this area of your home in order to set your property aside from the rest. A handy tip is to decorate your garden with some outdoor furniture, in order to help buyers visualise the garden and see its functionality.” vitaproperties.uk

PROPERTY
Time to invest: expert view With confusion surrounding how – and when – Brexit will be implemented, the property market has seen an unmistakable slowdown in recent months. But, says TK International’s Jeremy Karpel, right now could be a most opportune time to invest in a London home
“If you’re a potential residential property buyer based in the UK, living in the London area but paid in dollars or euros, then it’s never been a better time to invest. With residential prices down as much as 20 to 30 per cent throughout some of the prime areas of north and north west London, such as Hampstead, Belsize Park and St. John’s Wood, and with the sterling exchange rate almost at parity against the euro, and sub $1.25 against the dollar, there’s a potential 25 to 35 per cent saving to be made on buying a London home. Even if the market were to fall a further five per cent in the next quarter, this still represents incredible value for money while the tide remains out. “Assuming Brexit is implemented on 29 March, the very fact that a decision has been made means the UK can start making its way back to normality, with
78
fabricmagazine.co.uk
the first indicator of this coming late spring or early summer. There is, of course, a possibility our EU exit will be postponed, but we can expect an uplift whenever Brexit has been implemented – in whatever form. There will be a strengthening of the pound versus these two major currencies and at that point the tide will start to turn. And when it turns, it turns incredibly quickly: prices will begin to firm up as buyers start to realise that the market had reached rock bottom and will only be heading in one direction and one direction only – up! I believe that people will kick themselves that they did not buy earlier. There are some incredible homes out there. So my advice is to buy now and take advantage of historically low property prices and exchange rates. The alternative will be that you start to pay more in the summer.”

Aston Chase ranked No. 2 out of London’s top 50 boutique estate agencies
RATIONALE: PrimeResi’s Prime Movers indices are based on independent research and a range of sources – including a survey of PrimeResi Professional Members, which resulted in over 1,000 nominations for individual firms. PrimeResi. com tracks notable prime residential deals, instructions and business moves throughout the year, closely monitoring which agencies are involved on both the buying and selling sides. Short-listed firms are given the opportunity to submit a company profile and business highlights from the last 12 months. The rankings are qualitative judgements that attempt to measure recent success and business developments, quality of service, influence, innovation, and reputation within the industry; they are not based on company size or quantity of deals done.
