MAIN PROGRAM SUPERNATURAL
Henrik Spohler, Hypothesis In the Chilean Atacama desert, astronomers observe the edges of the universe at night. In Copenhagen, climatologists examine the millennium old air which is included in arctic ice, while in the heart of an Italian mountain physicists wait for the light which no human eye can see. Basic scientific research often eludes our imagination.
The 18th edition of the festival encourages you to delve into the supernatural aspects of human existence and reality, as well as into the speculative and hypothetical phenomena that defy explanation based on the purely empirical evidence. What does the supernatural stand for? How can we make sense of our reality without the help of scientifically grounded knowledge and the senses? Curators of the program: Franek Ammer, Krzysztof Candrowicz, Justyna Kociszewska, Marta Szymańska The full curatorial text is available at www.fotofestiwal.com
Guided tour: 15.06 (Sat), 1 PM Art_Inkubator, start: theater room Accompanying events: screening of Photon, dir. Norman Leto, 25.06 (Tue), 7 PM Motyl UŁ, 21 Sienkiewicza St.
Piotr Zbierski, Echoes Shades How does a culture express and communicate their ancestral connections to nature? In Echoes Shades, Piotr Zbierski turns his camera to focus on a number of different communities around the world; paying homage to their unique ceremonies and daily rituals that act as a bridge between their material reality and spiritual beliefs. Curator: Peggy Sue Amison Guided tour: 15.06 (Sat), 3 PM, Art_Inkubator, theater room Accompanying event: audiovisual concert with music by Prześwit, 15.06, 9:30 PM Muzeum Książki Artystycznej
Christoph Draeger and Heidrun Holzfeind, [The Auroville Project] Auroville is an intentional community founded in 1968 in South India by Mira Alfassa. In Auroville, people of all nationalities and creeds would live together in peace, an experiment both in self-knowledge and in collective living. The artists look at how the Utopian ideals of the community – no private property, no money, no rules, no religion – are lived and re-negotiated today. Guided tour: 14.06 (Fri), 4 PM Art_Inkubator, building D
Nicola Lo Calzo, Mythologies of Resistance. A New Geography of Memory in the Caribbean With The Cham Project Nicola Lo Calzo reconstructs a common past, a history of the legacy of colonial slavery in the Atlantic world in the 21st century – collects narratives, observes rites, captures all immaterial traces related to the long period of the African slavery. Curator: Jeanne Mercier Guided tour: 15.06 (Sat), 3 PM Art_Inkubator, start: theater room
David Fathi, The Last Road of the Immortal Woman On October 4th, 1951, Henrietta Lacks passes away from a very aggressive form of cancer. Nobody knew at the time that a new journey started for her, more precisely for her cells. A small sample of her tumor was taken without her knowledge by Dr. George Gey. The cells kept growing and multiplying, again and again, infinitely. Henrietta could not know, but she had become immortal. Guided tour: 15.06 (Sat), 1 PM Art_Inkubator, start: theater room
Klaus Pichler, This Will Change Your Life Forever Over a period of two years, Klaus Pichler immersed himself into the esoteric community. He pretended to be a fanatic, joined online forums, attended fairs and gatherings, familiarized himself with relevant theories, ordered products and made use of the special services... Guided tour: 15.06 (Sat), 1 PM Art_Inkubator, start: theater room
Guided tour: 15.06, 4:30 PM Art_Inkubator, building A, room A22 Accompanying events:
Rubedo: Magnum Opus – a performative lecture by Kuba Woynarowski 30.06, 7:30 PM Art_Inkubator, building C, theater room The Sound of…, Bartek Talaga and Alex Raczyñski, concert in the exhibition space, 30.06, 8 PM Art_Inkubator, building A, room A22 from the exhibition American Revelations from the Brad Feuerhelm’s collection
American Revelations The exhibition comprised of old postcards and archive press materials from the Brada Feuerhelm’s collection. Apocryphal by nature, apocalyptic by desire, this exhibition works associatively on the presupposition that what you are viewing exists in a state of loose beliefs in the photographic image, if not religion itself as it played out in early Twentieth Century American life – the time of crisis and fear, and the new era in which spiritualism, cults, and Catholicism all formed an ungovernable supernatural belief state. Curator: Brad Feuerhelm Guided tour: 15.06 (Sat), 3 PM Art_Inkubator, start: theater room
Klaus Pichler, This Will Change Your Life Forever
Rooms, group show In 2014, a team of physicists from the Austrian Academy of Sciences conducted an experiment in quantum photography. Instead of the light falling directly onto the object, the matrix of a camera registered photons located at a considerable distance from the photographed subject. Taking this particular scientific phenomenon as its point of departure, Rooms strives to emphasize the capacity of art to evoke and register the intangible aspects of reality. The photographs, films, and installations presented at the exhibition talk about the mingling of the sacred and the profane, the hidden power of images, the symbolism of alchemical transform darkroom as a space for the encounter with the supernatural. Artists: Patrycja Orzechowska, Kuba Woynarowski, Alexander Gehring, Milena Soporowska, Carlo Van de Roer Curator: Franek Ammer
David Fathi, The Last Road of the Immortal Woman
Hayley Austin, Backyard Pool
