24 I LEXIFOTO

. I 25

During your visit, you will encounter some of the words presented in this section on the panels next to the photographs exhibited. This list is not extensive but should explain most of the terms used among fotofever’s participants.

VINTAGE

A print is considered to be “ vintage ” if it has been printed around the same time than the shooting took place (a span of a couple of years afterward is satisfactory). Those prints are made by the photographer himself or under his supervision, and are therefore signed or numerated by his hand. That being said, in the 1950s-1960s, some photographers didn’t really pay attention to their works being numbered, but the experts and gallery owners, who can give you the best advice, know those habits.

SILVER PRINT

The silver print allows the creation of a photograph using a photochemical process including the exposition of a photosensitive film and its development and, most of the time, its printing on paper.

INKJET PRINT

In this process, the inkjet printer uses liquid ink and is essential in the creation of a high quality color rendition.

C-PRINT

Chromogenic color prints – or C-prints – are full-color photographic on glossy paper, produced from an original which is a color negative.

LAMBDA PRINT / LIGHTJET PRINT

A Lambda print is a photograph printed on traditional silver sensitive paper using a digital file.

FINE ART PRINT

Fine Art prints are printed using artistic paper –matt or glossy – and pigmentary inks, produced from a digital file.

DIGIGRAPHIE ®

Created by Epson, Digigraphie ® is a quality reference for reproducing works of art created with computers on big scale, high quality printers.

FRESSON PRINT

This word is used to describe the colored version of the coal printing technique created by Poitevin in 1855. Pierre Fresson has created this printing method in 1952, used on demand only in the Fresson workshop in the Parisian suburb. It consists of the decomposition of the image’s colors in order to create a photograph of very high quality, both technically and esthetically

PLATINUM PALLADIUM PRINT / PLATINOTYPE

Created in 1830, this technique, using Platinum and / or Palladium instead of Silver, helps in creating matt prints, with particularly intense contrasts, the chromatic scale going from deep blacks to brownish red.

DIASEC

Mounting of a colored print under Plexiglas.

DIBOND ®

A brand of a “ sandwich ” structure, using two aluminum panels with a polyethylene center. Its composite built gives it particular aesthetics and physical qualities.

BARITE PAPER

It’s a thick material that presents a very smooth surface and a particular white coloring, obtained with the use of Barium sulfate (or Barite, hence the name).

RC PAPER

Combination of a sheet of paper and different chemicals and gelatin that, together, make a photograph. The RC paper in uses a resin coating on the final product that optimizes the ink resistance to surrounding gazes.

MOUNTING / MOUNTED PAPER

Action of sticking the main work of art (in our case, the photograph) to another material, supposedly sturdier – a thicker paper, a canvas, a board …
