You can take your motorhome or caravan to Great Barrier on the SeaLink ferry. It leaves from downtown Auckland and arrives at Tryphena approximately four and a half hours later. Costs vary according to vehicle length, so you need to call 09 300 5900 to determine the cost of your vehicle. The timetable is seasonal. During the winter months, there are generally three trips a week. This increases significantly in summer. You need to buy a ticket for both passengers and your vehicle, but sometimes there may be seasonal deals. Aotea is a paradise for trampers, with many tracks and trails to explore.
Protecting our kauri
The kauri forests of Aotea were logged with increasing intensity between the 1880s and early 1930s. Today many walking tracks within the Aotea Conservation Park follow old kauri logging and milling tramway routes. One of the island’s bestknown historic landmarks was the Lower Kauri Dam on the Kaiaraara Track (near the Kaiaraara hut). Unfortunately, in June 2014, a huge storm carried away the historic lower dam, leaving only the base. A few areas of original kauri forest survived, and much of the forest is now regenerating. However, kauri are under threat from kauri dieback disease. The disease is caused by a microscopic fungus-like organism, called Phytophthora agathidicida (PA). It lives in the soil and infects kauri roots, damaging the tissues that carry nutrients and water within the tree, effectively starving it to death. Kauri dieback can be spread by just a pinhead of soil. But you can help save kauri by: • Cleaning soil off your footwear and other gear every time you enter or leave an area with native trees, and at every cleaning station. • Using disinfectant only after you’ve removed all soil. • Staying on the track and off kauri roots. A kauri’s roots can grow outwards three times as far as its branches. • Spreading the word within your networks on how to stop kauri dieback
