PASTOR’S THOUGHTS ASSISTANT PASTOR ALEX SANTOS
Greeting Saints, welcome to the start of summer! In the gospel writings according to Saint Mark, we read the following account: “The apostles gathered around Jesus and reported to him all they had done and taught. Then, because so many people were coming and going that they did not even have a chance to eat, he said to them, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” Mark 10:38 As we enter the start of summer, we encourage you to consider the following on the subject of rest; The Hebrew word for rest is “Shabbat - ( תבשsha-bat) literally meaning a ‘ceasing’ or ‘stopping.’ When we take the time to rest, we are communicating the value of our present conditions in which God is our provider, that we belong to Him, and that He is our Great Shepherd, and that we have no need of anything. When we cease from activity, we yield to the Lordship of Christ-that He be God! There is a great temptation in our society today to secure our future: good health, money, power and possessions. All these things have their place, however, if we are in the will of God (we fulfill His will), then there is no need for that to become the central focus of our drive. There is another meaning for rest: to cease from productivity (to slow down). In our society, productivity is what gives value to an individual. What do you do for a living? The question is often asked; “What do you do for a living?” God did not choose Israel, His people, because they were productive and efficient in their work. Jesus did not choose His disciples because of their academic title or because of their productive labor. God chooses what the world considers ordinary and garbage in order to sanctify it. God sees the potential in every person, who yields to the Holy Spirit, and trains their hearing to hear the voice of God speaking into their lives. This is how the day of rest will transform our values and become a healthy practice among us. The following is an acronym for the word S.L.O.W.: S – Savor the God moments and take time to relish with God. L – Listen to God’s voice (as He whispers). O - Open your heart to God with broken and unscripted prayers (in transparency). W – Worship, as it transforms your corporate and personal devotion. This summer I encourage you to hear the voice of the Holy Spirit calling you to slow down to evaluate your heart’s condition and your values. We pray that the Holy Spirit empower you and that together we value the most important things of our lives and gifting. Let’s together commit to S.L.O.W. down and enjoy the journey with Christ to a new level of faith. Learning to Rest!
Alex V. Santos
