PASTOR’S THOUGHTS SENIOR PASTOR SAM VALVERDE

MY HOUSE! The use of the exclamation mark above is, I believe, appropriate. Jesus was angry. To physically drive our merchants, overturn tables and block the entrances he must have been terribly upset. Mark describes it best: “On reaching Jerusalem, Jesus entered the temple courts and began driving out those who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves, 16 and would not allow anyone to carry merchandise through the temple courts. 17 And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.” Mark 11:15-17 (Isaiah 56:7, Jeremiah 7:11) Mark’s account reflects great force and aggression, but in verse 17 (probably still huffing and puffing) Jesus continues to teach his disciples. His lesson? Isaiah 56:7 which states that God’s house would be called a house of prayer and Jeremiah 7:11 which reflects God’s sadness that his house of prayer had been degraded to a den of robbers. This month we will continue to clean many aspects of God’s house through old-fashioned prayer. In May we Pray has been a favorite FTC tagline for many years, but sadly (and if my memory serves me well) only in 1998 and 2005 did we, as a church, embrace prayer. (Stay tuned for stories and examples during the sermon series). SERMON SERIES: MY HOUSE (MARK 11:15-17) Sunday, May 4, 2014 - MY HOUSE! On this day we will take a detailed look at why Jesus cleansed the temple in Jerusalem in such a violent way. We will discover how such a holy place became common - a place of religious business - while using all of the religious customs, vocabulary and ceremonies. We should take heed. Sunday, May 11, 2014 - A MOTHER’S PRAYER - Amidst testimonies and Bible stories, this message will encourage all Mothers to continue praying for their families. At the end of the message the Pastor will lead all Mom’s in a prayer for their children, near or far. Sunday, May 18, 2014 - THE LASTING EFFECTS OF A PRAYING FATHER - I will begin with Job’s example (Job 1:5) of a father who prays for his children and examples of other praying Fathers and Pastor Tim will finish the message with his own experiences and bible stories. At the end of the message all fathers will be invited to commit to a life of prayer. This should be a very moving service. Sunday, May 25, 2014 - THE LORDS PRAYER - Jesus’ disciples never asked him to teach them how to pray, they asked him “teach us to pray.” We will enjoy the rich meanings found in the short but powerful prayer known as the Lord’s prayer.

REFILL @ THE FOUNTAIN May 16 @ 7pm (sanctuary) A special evening for ministers, life group leaders, teachers, volunteers, celebration and everyone else in any type of ministry.
