PASTOR’S THOUGHTS SENIOR PASTOR SAM VALVERDE

THE BLESSINGS AND CHALLENGES OF FAMILIES

d “At the same time, saith the LORD, will I be the God of all the families of Israel, and they shall be my people.” Jeremiah 31:1 I love the fall season. Cooler weather, changing colors and longer evenings are welcomed after a relentlessly hot summer. It’s a good season to which to look forward. The preparations for Thanksgiving dinner followed by a few weeks of Christmas anticipation topped off by a New Year celebration is, to most, an exciting time. Many times these celebrations involve getting together with family. This can be a blessing but can also be a challenge due to family dynamics, damaged relationships, offenses, negligence and even abuse. Even if there are disagreements, temporary break-ups and even permanent cutoffs, the circuits are always in place for reconciliation, forgiveness and moving on, again. Someone just needs to lift the panel cover and pull the lever. Family dinners and get-togethers can be stressful when those around the table have not fixed their misunderstandings or asked forgiveness for their less than brotherly (fatherly, motherly, sisterly) conduct. In Jeremiah 30 God and Israel were experiencing a broken relationship. God had used Israel’s enemies as a whip to correct Israel, who was doubling over in pain like a woman in travail (30:6) with incurable bruises and grievous wounds. (30:12). The Lord promised restoration of health (30:17) and a healed relationship: “And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.” (30:22) Isn’t restoration and healing what we want in our family? Jeremiah 31 begins with a statement of inclusion, protection, togetherness and peace. If you believe God can restore your family’s broken relationships, consider the following:

• SOMEONE MUST TAKE THE FIRST STEP. GOD DID. “Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the Lord; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar…” (30:10) Make the call, write the letter, text (not best but can be a start), stop by the house and initiate the reconciliation. • B REAK THE CHAINS OF BITTERNESS, HURTS AND PAIN. GOD DID.

“and thy seed from the land of their captivity…” (30:10) Are any of your family members captive to an incident, offense, misunderstanding or memory? Make all efforts to free your loved ones from that bondage.

• USE EXPRESSIONS OF HOPE. GOD DID. “…And Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet…” (30:10) God can prompt and guide for your family to return to that place of rest and quiet. How wonderful it is to gather to a place of laughter, playfulness, prayer and peace. The hours go by without notice, people linger, talk and wish the evening would not end. • ELIMINATE FEAR. GOD DID. “…And none shall make him afraid.” (30:10) God did. At times hurt people (genuine, real hurt, not childlike disagreements) fear opening up, forgiving and being vulnerable because they fear being hurt again. The reconciliation must include an assurance that “none shall make him afraid.”

FROM OUR 1S T LADY

God is so good and I am so grateful for the wonderful people I get to interact with in so many capacities. We held a woman’s service in Septemeber and the committee was great! Special thanks to: Judy Cisneros, Rachel Leon, Celeste Valverde, Veronica Portillo and her worship team, Reniah Gutierrez, Colette Arteaga and ushers, Bereniece Dominguez, Arturo Ballesteros and the young men who helped us. Many of you expressed how awesome it was to fellowship with one another so next year we will be doing more women activities! I want to give a special ‘thank you’ to Pastor Miguel Flores. I asked him to close up the building because all of our english men were at camp ... well he came and cleaned up, put away all the tables and chairs and waited for us with a smile! God Bless you Pastor Miguel Flores! ***********************************

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED IN NOVEMBER I was thinking the other day of the scripture “when you give to the least of them...” (Matthew 25:40) which is why Fountain of Truth is once again partnering with Outreach Nation. We will be feeding families on Saturday, November 22, 2014 at their Rancho Cucamonga office. We need 100 volunteers to sign up in the lobby after services. Bring your children, (7 years and up) it will be a memorable experience for them as they give to the less fortunate. For volunteering information contact Lydia Hernandez (lydia2803@aol.com)

NOW ACCEPTING DONATIONS OF CLOTHES, SHOES, AND TOYS Fountain of Truth has a sister “church” in Tijuana, Mexico who we would like to bless in December. Please donate clean gently used clothes, shoes, toys for our brothers and sisters in Mexico! A donation box will be available every Sunday in the lobby. (Also in December will also be shipping donated goods to Guatemala. Don’t miss out.)

PASTOR’S THOUGHTS

• P ROMISE TO BE THERE. GOD DID.

“For I am with thee, saith the Lord…” (30:11) Although sometimes it is not possible due to the degree of the offense (child, sexual abuse, lack of safety, etc.), it is almost always better to “be there” during good times and bad. Crisis should bring the family together, even if not immediately. There is great security in knowing that one’s family is with one, at all times. This does not condoning sin or ignoring reality – but it does mean one can pray for the person and accompany them in their journey, even from afar. PREACHING SERIES On the first two Sundays we will address issues of moral purity, the fight against the flesh and encourage the church to perfect holiness in the fear of the Lord. (II Corinthians 7:1) Sunday, November 2, 2014 “Accessible Sin, Available Grace” (PASTOR PHIL RAYA) Sin abounds. Immorality is trendy. Political correctness is the rule. The church sometimes seems judgmental in an era of moral relativism. Is this simply the current culture or is it something more? We will discover how today is an “easy” time to sin, yet it’s also an easy time to experience Christian growth. Christians are truly engaged in the War of the Worlds. Sunday, November 9, 2014 – The Darker Side of Humanity Sometimes we may think we are the only ones facing temptations or struggling with the flesh. The Bible does not hide the battles (won or lost) by some of the most well-known bible characters. Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Ruben, Moses, David, Solomon, Samson…the list goes on, yet they show up on the faith-champion list of Hebrews 11. If they can make it, so can we – be encouraged! Sunday, November 16, 2014 – Help, my Family is Falling Apart! What does a parent do when their children just do no listen? How does one deal with an alcoholic son, a promiscuous daughter or a slothful son? How do siblings deal with parents who behave like children? Can are family be blessed too? We will look at the dysfunctions in David’s family to learn some do’s and don’ts for family health. Sunday, November 23, 2014 – Hi, Come in! Welcome to Thanksgiving! – Not! Hurry, they’re almost here! How do I look? Is the turkey ready? You didn’t clean the garage! These and other “important” matters will be put aside as we discuss what is really important during Thanksgiving, other holiday and everyday within the life of a family. We will study the steps Jacob and Esau took to reconcile. Sunday, November 30, 2014 – Ministering as Family! Have you ever considered ministering as a family? This does not necessarily mean selling the house and going to Africa. There are at least 4 ministries that a family can do together to bless and be blessed. Don’t miss this important message! God bless!
