SENIOR PASTOR SAM VALVERDE

NEED TO TALK ABOUT

“YUCKY” STUFF?

“Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.” II Corinthians 7:1 KJV he other day one of our very well known and capable speakers mentioned T that he had detected something in one of his children. There was something suspiciously odd/wrong. He mentioned that when they have to talk about having done something wrong, or confessing some childhood sin, their code is: “do you need to talk about “yucky” stuff. I think that’s a pretty practical and effective way of parenting.

Is there any “yucky” stuff that you need to talk to your Father about? As we continue to make our way Back to Holiness, it is a good time to take an honest inventory about what things we need to “lay aside” (Hebrews 12:1,2). Paul challenges us to “cleanse ourselves of all filthiness of flesh and spirit...” The word filthiness is defilement. Something defiled is something that is not clean; it has become corrupt, ruined. The sins that so easily beset us creep in without us even noticing. It is easy for our flesh to pick up bad habits. It does not take much prompting for it to direct us towards slothfulness, sensuality, immorality and improper conduct. It has no problem slipping, rationalizing, excusing - wrong music, wrong movies, wrong magazines, wrong websites, wrong clothing and wrong relationships. Godly courtships that began with the intent to honor God, the family and the church many times become defiled with premature expressions of affection that lead to fornication at worst and guilt and despoilment at best. Our spirit can also turn “yucky”. A wrong word we begin to use, a negative attitude that clouds our countenance; an arrogant outlook or cynical manner that we assume can change our spiritual demeanor. We begin to hang with the wrong “friend”, become influenced by carnal people and before we know it we have lost the luster of his glory and the joy of the Lord. Over the years I’ve seen people who were sold out for God, lovers of the brotherhood, praying and worshipping saints change into spiritual zombies. They attend services, but they’re dead inside. They go through the motions, say the right words and greet the right people, but they never took care of the “yucky” stuff. Let us follow Paul’s advice and perfect holiness in the fear of the Lord. Let us separate from anything - flesh or spirit - that will rob us of godliness and closeness to our Lord. Fighting the battle with you,

Pastor Sam Valverde
