The Sign and The Light Saturday, December 7, 2019 through Sunday, February 2, 2020 Rembrandt: The Sign and the Light commemorates the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669), the most prominent artist of the Dutch Golden Age. The exhibition presents a comprehensive overview of Rembrandt’s print oeuvre and shows how his innovations in printmaking — specifically, etching — helped immortalize him as one of the most accomplished printmakers of all time.
Wednesday Society Salons: Gallery admission is included as part of a dazzling evening of entertainment on January 8, 22, and 29, 2020. See the exhibition, hear a live performance, and enjoy a Prosecco reception before the concert and during intermission. Tickets are $40; no charge for Four Arts members. WEDNESDAY SOCIET Y SALONS ARE GENEROUSLY SUPPORTED BY LINDA R. OLSSON, INC., REALTOR.
Rembrandt created over 300 etchings, engravings, and drypoints throughout his career. His prints combine his exceptional skills as a draftsman with his mastery of intaglio printmaking to create crisp lines and luminous, theatrical scenes. He frequently spent years working on a single image, making changes (referred to as “states”) and impressions between the various changes. Rembrandt also experimented with inks and papers, all of which increased the popularity and collectability of his prints.
Free Days: Gallery admission is no charge to the public on the last Sunday of each month: December 29, 2019 and January 26, 2020.
The Sign and the Light features 68 prints from selfportraits and portraits of family and friends to Old and New Testament stories, landscapes, and genre scenes. The exhibition also offers visitors the opportunity to view these prints with magnifying glasses and learn about Rembrandt’s printmaking process through display cases and interactive stations created by IS Projects, a public-access printmaking and book arts studio in Ft. Lauderdale, FL.

For America:
Paintings from the National Academy of Design
Saturday, February 15 through Saturday, April 11, 2020
For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design is the first exhibition to highlight a pivotal aspect of the collection of the National Academy of Design (NAD) — the joint presentation of an artist’s portrait with his or her diploma work. From its founding in 1825 to the present, the NAD has required all Academicians to donate a representative work to the Academy’s collection, and, from 1839 to 1994, the Academy also required Associates to present a portrait of themselves, whether painted by their own hand or that of a fellow artist.

For America is the largest travelling exhibition of the Academy’s painting collection ever undertaken, and it includes beloved icons along with lesser-known gems. The exhibition’s 100 paintings present not only a visual document of the Academy’s membership but also a unique history of American painting from 1809 to the present. For America will enrich the dialogue of scholars, students, and artists of all ages with the firsthand experience of American masterpieces. The exhibition is accompanied by a richly-illustrated scholarly catalogue with essays by a roster of distinguished historians, art historians, curators, artists, and architects. For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design is organized by the American Federation of Arts and the National Academy of Design. Support for the national tour is provided by the JFM Foundation, Monique Schoen Warshaw, and Steph and Jody La Nasa.

Pianist Wu Han, a 2019 Beyer Artistin-Residence, returns to The Four Arts leading a program featuring the grace, wit, and charm of French music. Early works by Saint-Saëns (Piano Trio No. 1 in F Major, Op. 18) and Fauré (Piano Quartet No. 1 in C Minor, Op. 15) recreate the elegant atmosphere of 19th-century Parisian salons. Ravel’s Sonata for Violin and Cello uses just two string instruments to produce a composition of unique, austere beauty. These three inimitable works capture the essence of pure melody in its most delightfully fundamental form.

The Parkers, Blodgett Artists-in-Residence at Harvard, are known for their luminous sound and exceptional musicianship. Sunday, March 15, 2020 at 3 p.m. Tickets $30 • No charge for Four Arts members This dynamic ensemble makes its Four Arts debut with a program that honors Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year and contrasts his early development with that of another titan — Béla Bartók. In the youthful Clarinet Trio in B-flat Major, Op. 11 and String Quintet Op. 4, Beethoven is revealed as fully confident and in command of his muscular style, while Bartók’s early Piano Quintet in C Major, Op. 4 looks back to a more opulent, romantic language that only hints at the modernist he would become.
Spanish pianist Javier Perianes, who performed here last season with Orpheus Chamber Orchestra, returns for an intriguing program with acclaimed German violist Tabea Zimmermann. These captivating players will open with Schubert’s Sonata in A Minor, D. 821 and Brahms’ Sonata No. 2 in E-flat Major, Op. 120, then dive through a selection of pieces by De Falla, Albeniz, Villalobos, and Piazzolla. Perianes’ flourishing international career spans five continents and Zimmermann has regularly appeared as a soloist with distinguished orchestras worldwide.

YEONMI PARK
CHRIS WALLACE
MARLENE STRAUSS
Born in North Korea, Yeonmi Park grew up in a punishing society where the concept of freedom did not exist. At age 13, she and her family made a daring escape, crossing a frozen river and three mountains to get to the Chinese border. This articulate and candid speaker — whose talks have been seen around the world — tells her electrifying story of escape and urges us to recognize — and resist — the oppression that exists in North Korea and around the world. She advocates for speaking up for those who cannot speak themselves.
Chris Wallace has won every major broadcast news award, including three Emmys and a Peabody Award. The host of Fox News Sunday and moderator of the final 2016 presidential debate, Wallace is a battled-tested media presence and an incisive, thoughtful interviewer. He is the author of the best-seller, Character: Profiles in Presidential Courage. Wallace breaks down top news issues with seasoned insights on current events and political affairs, including the evolving role of the media.
Just when it appeared that interest in Andy Warhol had begun to diminish, a huge new show of his work opened at the Whitney in November 2018. Marlene Strauss, who lectures annually at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and other organizations throughout the US, will discuss how Warhol made Pop Art respectable in the second half of the 20th century, as well as delve into his darker side. His images of car crashes, electric chairs, and Jackie Kennedy at JFK’s funeral attest to his observation that we live in a violent world.

RICHARD SAJA
Though he occasionally feels the need to explore avenues of expression beyond that of the needle, the majority of Richard Saja’s work focuses on creating “interferences” of the formal patterns of French toile through embroidery. “My enduring love and fascination for textiles derives from the absolutely unlimited interplay of pattern, color, and texture — there is no other medium where this trinity is so fully realized,” Saja said. “Historically, toile de Jouy is a print that through its dense repetition becomes anonymous. It’s a tabula rasa begging for context, not unlike a child’s coloring book. The act of selectively embellishing small areas of it automatically inverts its historical usage: suddenly the anonymity of the print is broken, and it evolves through its subversion, which appeals greatly to me. With an economy of means, a whole new context is created. There is another story there, it just needs to be drawn out.” Saja works in Catskill, New York. After a brief stint working as an art director on Madison Ave., his small design firm, Historically Inaccurate Decorative Arts, was born in the early 2000s. Saja has exhibited internationally with shows in New York, Paris, London, Berlin, and the National Museum of Embroidery in South Korea. His work has recently been exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts Boston and the Toile de Jouy Museum in Josas, France.
