the four arts Welcomes a
neW President Following an extensive search over the past year, The Society of the Four Arts selected Philip Rylands, Ph.D., as its next president, succeeding Dr. David Breneman. Dr. Rylands began work at The Four Arts on September 16.
“We are fortunate to secure a president with such a track record of success on an international level,” said Dr. Randolph “Bob” Guthrie, chairman of the board of trustees. “Philip not only has a deep knowledge of art and culture, but also is the right person to harness our personnel and technology resources.” Rylands started as the sole administrator for the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice in 1979, building the staff and the Collection into a landmark institution of global cultural significance, recently serving as Director Emeritus. “We started from one employee to many, expanding it,” Rylands said. “We doubled its size, we introduced an exhibition program, sculpture gardens, a café and shops, we multiplied its attendance by seven times, and it became the most visited museum of modern art in Italy.” Rylands went to Venice in the 1970s while working on his Ph.D. in art history, focusing on Italian Renaissance painter Palma il Vecchio, before a welcome friendship with Peggy Guggenheim changed his career path.

“She had a great capacity for friendship,” Rylands said. “She was modestly unaware of how important she had been to the history of art. She was justly proud of her discovery of Jackson Pollack. Peggy was a generous friend and a great figure in the history of collecting.”
Philip Rylands, Ph.D.
Under Rylands’ leadership, the 18th-century palazzo that houses the Peggy Guggenheim Collection was converted and restored, and the organization set and achieved many programming and financial goals, including the implementation of an extensive internship program. CON TINu Ed ON PAgE 2

Philip Rylands, Ph.D.
Rylands also served as project manager for the American Pavilion at Venice art and architecture biennales, and on committees that helped secure donor funding for restoration projects in Venice, including the Basilica of Torcello. He is an author and editor of exhibition reviews and books, has lectured extensively in the U.S. and Europe, and is an Honorary Director of Save Venice.
“Strictly speaking, I was now retired in Italy,” Rylands said, “but I didn’t feel like a retiree, so I was delighted to have this chance to open up my horizons. It’s very refreshing to have a new challenge, it’s going to be an adventure and it’s going to be great fun.” The Four Arts is delighted to have hired an experienced museum director with such an extensive background in the arts, cultural programming, donor relations, and staffing. “I had a wonderful staff in Venice – and I am finding the same great qualities here at The Four Arts,” Rylands said. “If I can continue the same community spirit that already exists among the staff here, that would be a wonderful achievement, along with anything I can do to make this institution and its astonishing programming even better.” Dr. Breneman had been president of The Four Arts since January 1, 2015, guiding the institution through the renovation of the King Library and an increase of 83% in overall attendance. He announced his retirement last fall, agreeing to stay on until September 2019 to allow a search committee time to find a successor. Breneman and his wife, Dr. Donna Plasket, have moved back to Charlottesville, Va., where they spent summers during his presidency. Rylands grew up in northwest England and has B.A., M.A., and Ph.D. degrees in art history from King’s College, Cambridge. At university he met his wife, Jane Turner Rylands, an American and accomplished author. They have a son, Augustus, who lives in Europe and works in the field of alternative energy. The Rylands will live seasonally in Palm Beach and Venice. “Someone wrote me recently and said, ‘Welcome to Paradise,’ and I am ready to believe it,” Rylands said. “I am delighted to be participating in The Four Arts’ programs; they are so varied and interesting. Palm Beach is a charming area and the people have already been very welcoming here.”

Join us for an exploration of some of the world’s best-known holiday repertoire. Music director, Rob Kapilow (NPR’s “What Makes It Great?”), leads Broadway vocalists, Michael Winther & Gabrielle Stravelli, and Palm Beach Atlantic University’s Pop-Rock Vocal Ensemble. Many of your favorite Christmas songs – “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Let it Snow,” “White Christmas,” “Silver Bells,” “Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer,” “Holly Jolly Christmas,” and “Winter Wonderland,” among others – are among the most popular Christmas songs ever written, and they were all written by Jewish composers! Enjoy this remarkable tale of immigrant outsiders who rejected their parents’ European pasts and embraced Tin Pan Alley, Broadway, and Hollywood. “Rob Kapilow is brilliant and delivers a high level of insightful entertainment live on stage,” said Phillip Bergmann, The Four Arts’ Head of Music & Film Programming. “This evening celebrates the fact that the soundtrack of an American holiday was written, in large part, by immigrants!” It’s a rich story involving the powerful creative imaginations of an extraordinary group of songwriters, one that may completely change the way you think about and hear some of the world’s most beloved songs. Kapilow is the author of Listening for America: Inside the Great American Songbook from Gershwin to Sondheim and has been a conductor, composer, and commentator for over 20 years.

As museums across the globe celebrate the 350th anniversary of the death of Rembrandt van Rijn (16061669) this fall, visitors and members of The Society of the Four Arts are in for a special treat – the American debut of an exhibition about the most prominent artist of the Dutch Golden Age. Rembrandt: The Sign and The Light presents a comprehensive overview of Rembrandt’s print oeuvre and shows how his innovations in printmaking – specifically, etching – helped immortalize him as one of the most accomplished printmakers of all time. The exhibition features 69 prints from self-portraits and portraits of family and friends to Old and New Testament stories, landscapes, and genre scenes.

“Rembrandt is primarily known for his paintings and drawings, but it is his etchings that most profoundly influenced the course of art history,” said Rebecca A. Dunham, The Four Arts’ head of fine arts and curator.

“His prints reveal his unique pictorial style and rebellious approach to artmaking,” Dunham said. “He refused to idealize his surroundings, instead relying upon his gaze to psychologically penetrate his subjects and capture the world around him as it was and in a theatrical manner.”
“Stealing rembrandt” with Anthony Amore
In addition to being provocative, Rembrandt was a consummate innovator, especially in printmaking. “He frequently reworked a single image, making several changes and versions called ‘states,’ sometimes over ten times. He also experimented with mark-making, the types of inks he used and how he inked his prints, and printed on an array of paper types, all of which increased the popularity and collectability of his prints.” Dunham said. “Rembrandt’s prints were in circulation not only in the Netherlands but across Europe during his lifetime and his unmistakable etching style was widely imitated by artists.” Because printmaking is a technical art-making process, Dunham has partnered with IS Projects, a public-access printmaking and book arts studio in Fort Lauderdale, to create displays in the exhibition with the tools and materials artists use to make fine art prints. Our celebration begins on December 8 with the screening of the documentary In Search of Beethoven, produced by Phil Grabsky and Seventh Art Productions, the group behind our popular Exhibition on Screen series. In Search of Beethoven brings together the world’s leading performers and experts on the composer to reveal new insights, looking past the romantic myth of Beethoven as a tormented figure battling to overcome his tragic fate and revealing someone quite different and far more interesting. A Q+A follows the screening with our Head of Music & Film Programming, Phillip Bergmann, and classical music expert Juliette de Marcellus. On December 13, enjoy the 1994 film Immortal Beloved, featuring Gary Oldman as Beethoven, with screenings at 2 and 5:30 p.m. Upon Beethoven’s death, a friend executing his will tries to discover the identity of his “immortal beloved” famously referred to in a love letter. A return visit by Curtis on Tour, the global touring initiative of the Curtis Institute of Music, on January 5 is the first of 10 live performances to feature Beethoven’s works. The Vera Quartet, in-residence at the Curtis Institute, will perform his early String Quartet No. 4 in C Minor, Op. 18, and pianist Meng-Chieh Liu will join the group for Franck’s Piano Quintet in F Minor. “Curtis on Tour is performing an early work by

The King and architectural firm Kirchhoff and Associates won the 2019 American Institute of Architects Florida/ Caribbean Merit Award of Excellence for Historic Preservation & Restoration and were honored at a reception July 27 at the Ritz-Carlton Orlando. Thanks to an application by Dr. Rachel Schipper, The Four Arts’ director of libraries, the King Library was featured in the September-October issue of American Libraries magazine as one of 13 projects in its 31st annual Library Design Showcase. Under the title, “Mediterranean Flavor,” American Libraries noted that Kirchhoff had used old photos to ensure an accurate restoration of the building, originally designed by Maurice Fatio in the 1930s, and that the renovation included re-creating the exterior murals as well as preserving and replaning cypress walls, beams, and shelving.
“I think it’s the feeling and the uniqueness of this project that gained success for this application,” said Schipper. “We were thrilled and honored that the American Library Association recognized the historic preservation of this landmarked library, in partnership with The Society of the Four Arts and the Town of Palm Beach.” The King also appeared in the summer issue of Preservation magazine on the opening page of its “Transitions: Places Restored” section. Preservation noted that the restoration work included adding wheelchair access, updating restrooms, returning windows and doors to their original locations, and redoing the first level’s poured concrete floor. Palm Beach Illustrated feted the King in its September issue, under the headline “Restored to Glory.” The two-page spread featured several photos and noted: “Glowing with restored luster, the King Library’s successful revitalization will remain a source of pride for Palm Beach.”

foR ameRica: paintinGs fRom the national academy of desiGn
Saturday, February 15 through Saturday, April 11 For America: Paintings from the National Academy of Design is the largest travelling exhibition of the Academy’s painting collection ever undertaken, and it includes beloved icons along with lesser-known gems. The exhibition’s 100 paintings present a visual document of the Academy’s membership and a unique history of American painting from 1809 to the present, due to the long-standing requirement for Academicians to donate a representative work along with a portrait or self-portrait. The exhibition will provide visitors with firsthand experience of American masterpieces and is accompanied by a richly-illustrated scholarly catalogue featuring essays by a roster of distinguished historians, art historians, curators, artists, and architects.
