THE SOCIETY OF

Development Director joins Four Arts’ team years ago, a mentor S everal asked Bridget Baratta to picture
“To this day I can still remember a poster of Andrew Wyeth’s Christina’s World hanging above my kindergarten desk,” Baratta said. “It was the beginning of a lifelong appreciation for artists and art itself.
her dream job in Development.
“I explained that if I could work anywhere, I would love to be at The Society of the Four Arts,” Baratta said.
“I am excited to work with so many talented and committed colleagues and board members and to bring my passion for the Four Arts, my knowledge of our community and experience in facilitating philanthropy to this unique community treasure.”
The Four Arts is pleased to make that dream become reality, recently adding Baratta as its Director of Development, overseeing a talented department that also includes Special Events and Communications. She began at the Four Arts on September 1, following three years as Chief Development Officer for the Palm Beach Zoo & Conservation Society, almost two years as the Director of Philanthropy & Strategic Partnerships at Oxbridge Academy, and a decade as Executive Director of the Martin County Community Foundation. “When I am asked what type of work I do,” Baratta said, “I explain that I help people make the world a better place. I have had the tremendous privilege of working with numerous local individuals and families, helping them share some of their wealth with the causes and institutions they care about, as well as helping non-profit organizations to facilitate impactful relationships with philanthropists.” Baratta is a voracious reader, a member of three different book

clubs and a lifetime member of the Athenaeum in Philadelphia. Her appreciation of both the performing and fine arts began during her early years in South Dartmouth, Massachusetts, where she grew up playing the violin, attending ballet classes and a primary school where art was everywhere.
Baratta holds a Bachelor of Business Administration from George Washington University and a Master of Education Policy and Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. This season, she is especially looking forward to meeting Walter Isaacson on January 8, hearing Curtis on Tour on February 27 (as a graduate student at Penn, she often did her homework on the steps of the Curtis Institute, listening to rehearsals through open windows), and viewing the art exhibitions. “My biggest challenge will be figuring out where to set up my air mattress at the Four Arts,” Baratta said, laughing, “This will be a very busy season for my development team, and there are so many programs that I want to attend, that I think it’s going to be hard to leave and drive home!”

Dear members, This spring and summer have been a busy time at The Society of the Four Arts, with several important personnel changes. First, and most important, Molly Charland, who has been a stalwart at the Four Arts for 22 years, announced that she planned to retire at the end of September. We were saddened to learn of her decision, as she oversaw the Library for many years and led Campus on the Lake with enthusiasm and grace. She will be sorely missed. Read more about her departure on Page 9 of this Folio. Many of you may know Sofia Vollmer Maduro, who has been teaching courses at Campus on the Lake in recent years on Photography as Art. We are fortunate that Sofia has agreed to be Molly’s successor as Director of Education. Sofia has an impressive record of international work in arts administration, teaching and service on numerous boards of artistic organizations in the U.S. and abroad. She has Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees in Economics from Cambridge University, England. We also have been fortunate to attract Bridget Baratta as the new Director of Development, overseeing a department that includes Communications and Special Events. Bridget is well-known in our area, having served for a decade as head of the Martin County Community Foundation, followed by leadership positions at Oxbridge Academy and most recently as Chief Development Officer at the Palm Beach Zoo. Read more about Bridget on the front of this Folio. Amanda Jorgensen, who has been with the Four Arts for five years, has been promoted to Head of Communications. Lauren Fifarek, a graduate of Michigan State University with several years of corporate event planning, joined us this summer as the Head of Special Events. Rebecca Dunham, our new Head of Fine Arts and Curator, has been with the Four Arts since early July, doing a splendid job in taking over that role from Nancy Mato. Rebecca was featured on the front page of our summer Folio. It has been a few months of remarkable change and new faces at Four Arts, and we are thrilled with the new appointments who we anticipate will serve us well for many years to come.

A word about the King Library renovation: I had a chance to walk through the Library recently and can report that the work is being done splendidly. The old-growth Cypress that was removed from the interior walls has been reworked by local lumber mills for use in the ceilings and stairwells of the building. The new roof of red tiles is now complete, and artist Zenon Toczek has done a spectacular job of recreating the murals. The opened ceiling on the second floor exposed original trusses and returns that space to its original look and grandeur. For more about the King Library renovation and grand opening event, see Pages 6-7 of this Folio.

he Society of the Four Arts has two exciting holidaythemed concerts for audiences to enjoy in December.
First up is a Wynton Marsalis protégé, Jazz pianist and composer Aaron Diehl, who performs with his trio on December 5. Diehl is a leading force among today’s jazz contemporaries, spearheading a distinct union of traditional and fresh artistry. Diehl recently served as Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center New Orleans Songbook concert series. “Diehl is a curator, especially in the jazz world,” said Phillip Bergmann, the Four Arts’ Head of Music & Film Programming. “He explains, engages and really curates from the stage.” New York Polyphony, one of the foremost early music vocal chamber ensembles active today, takes the Gubelmann stage on December 9. The multiple Grammy nominees have been praised for a rich sound and feature

a program that spans nine centuries of music. “It’s early vocal music, acapella, but with a modern twist,” Bergmann said. “The way New York Polyphony delivers early music, it’s a lot of fun to be at one of their performances.” These two concerts, combined with the annual showing of The Nutcracker and several high-definition screenings and films (see Page 10 of this Folio), make the Four Arts the perfect place to celebrate the holiday season. “These artists like to engage with the audience – they don’t park and bark,” Bergmann said. “There are a lot of selections here at the Four Arts, all good ways to enjoy the holiday time. These are great things to bring families to, for people to bring others to.” For the complete list of live performances this season, please click on www.fourarts.org

The Society of the Four Arts is proud to present
The Art of Seating: 200 Years of American Design as its first art exhibition of the 2018-19 season, on display from December 8, 2018 through January 20, 2019. Most chairs encountered through the day define themselves simply – a place at the family table, a comfortable spot with a great view of the river, a seat of corporate power. When looking at the 43 chairs selected for The Art of Seating however, there is more to take in than simple pieces of furniture. “It’s a show that is going to be visually pleasing to the eye,” said Rebecca Dunham, the Four Arts’ Head of Fine Arts and Curator. “There are all different types of shapes and colors and fabrics. They are all made of materials that we are familiar with touching. You want to reach out and touch and sit in them – but you can’t, because they are artwork preserved to learn about the history of the design of chairs.” Developed by the Museum of Contemporary Art Jacksonville and organized for tour by International Arts & Artists, Washington D.C., these works of art have compelling stories to tell about American history and the evolution of American design, as well as display incredible artistry and craftsmanship. “There is a lot of rich content with every piece of art in the show,” Dunham said. “There’s information about the designer, the company that manufactured the chair, the style of the chair and what was trendy in design at the time that might have influenced its form.” The exhibition, comprised of selections from the private collection of the Thomas H. and Diane DeMell Jacobsen Ph.D. Foundation, is a survey of iconic and historic chairs reaching from the mid-1800s to today’s studio movement. highlights include “Rocking Stool” by Isamu Noguchi (1904-88) – his “Intetra” sculpture sits next to the Intracoastal Waterway on the Four Arts campus – and the “Lady’s Reception Chair,” which the Wakefield Rattan company designed and manufactured in the late 1800s in imitation of peacock feathers. The Art of Seating also explores the principle of “form follows function” – that an object’s form should be based on its intended function or purpose. “You see this progression over time, that the designers start to treat the chairs more as pieces of sculpture rather than functional everyday objects,” Dunham said. At 11 a.m. on opening day, December 8, Diane DeMell Jacobsen is scheduled to give an illustrated lecture in the Walter S. Gubelmann Auditorium. There is no charge to attend. “She will talk about these objects and her collecting practices,” Dunham said of Jacobsen, “and how they fit into her and her late husband’s overall plan. The Jacobsens focused on collecting American art, and their collection is well-known throughout the United States.”

The exhibition includes wall murals comprised of black and white photo reproductions, a video presentation about the development of Frank Gehry’s “Superlight” chair, and a self-guided audio tour that will be available at www.fourarts. oncell.com. with an eye to preservation,” Schipper said. “That includes much of the original Cyprus wood re-honed and replaced back into the building. Some of the original furnishings are still there, and the chandeliers in the Leonard and Judy Lauder Reading Room remain the same. “The modernization is in the technology and accessibility that is available. It will be a lot easier for people to get to the second floor and there will be efficient navigation throughout the building and from the building to the garden.”
Please join us for the King Library Grand Opening celebration on Thursday, December 13, 2018. The festivities start at 11 a.m.
Additional highlights include a coloring station featuring drawings of the King Library by Connie Geisler; a display hosted by book discussion facilitators Richard Bock, Richard D’Elia and Bill David; food catered by Cristafaro’s; special King Librarythemed giveaways; and book signings from authors Rick Rose, Olympia Devine, Janet DeVries and Graham Brunk that will take place in the Mary Hulitar Programming Center on the second floor, adjacent to the Arts Collection.

V
isitors to The Society of the Four Arts this fall will be pleased to see its library building open to the public once again. The completed 18-month restoration and building project for the Gioconda and Joseph King Library will provide an improved and expanded space for the Mauricio Fatio-designed building that originally opened on Jan. 8, 1938 in Palm Beach. “She’s 80 years young,” said Dr. Rachel Schipper, the Four Arts’ Director of Libraries. “We very much appreciate the generosity of our donors who are directly responsible for the opportunity to rehabilitate this beautiful structure.”
6
One notable renewal is the front entrance, which has returned to the middle of the building and features an ADA-accessible ramp. “In Maurice Fatio’s Mediterranean revival style, he enjoyed symmetry,” Schipper said, “and so that front door placement centrally with
King Library Programs windows on both sides is part of the original design.” The Mary Hulitar Programming Center can seat up to 80 for book discussions and events, and features exposed beams along the ceiling, which had been covered by tile and ductwork for decades. “The exposed beams are rather beautiful and afford the Programming Center the ability for enhanced acoustics,” Schipper said. Adding them to the modular furniture and compact shelving on the second floor “has opened up the room so that it allows for a more organized, open space, but also a space that we can re-configure in many ways.” The King Library will re-open for daily visitors in November, so Four Arts members can get a pre-Grand Opening look at the restored space, including its new stairwells, elevator and restrooms. For many returning patrons, the King should feel familiar and inviting. “The reading room areas will be as comfortable and accessible as they were in Maurice Fatio’s time,” Schipper said. “There are two nooks on the second floor for quiet reflection and reading. The front desk is in the same location. The garden is really a part of the lovely setting. The places where people sit and socialize, read and enjoy newspapers, will all have the same atmosphere and comfortable environment.”

Campus director Molly Charland retires Society of the Four Arts Themembers and guests have been
graced by Molly Charland’s presence for the past 22 years, warmly welcoming visitors, introducing a lecturer at Campus on the Lake, checking on a classroom in the Fitz Eugene Dixon Education Building, moderating a Q&A, suggesting a book to a library patron, or simply stopping to chat in a hallway. “The Four Arts has been the perfect place for me!” Charland said. “I love chatting with our patrons. They are articulate, clever, welltravelled, well-read, have had unique experiences. This is catnip to an information junkie like me!” Now, for the first time since April 1996, the Four Arts’ staff list no longer includes Charland. The Director of Education announced her retirement over the summer and completed her last day of work on September 28. “It was time for a new hand at the helm,” Charland said. “The timing was perfect. My retirement is my husband’s 80th birthday present.” Charland, 71, started working in the Gioconda and Joseph King Library in 1996. She was promoted to director of the library in 2003 and took over the expanding Campus on the Lake department before the 2006-07 season. “I love how the Four Arts has evolved,” Charland said. “It reflects graciousness and learning
and serves as the standard-bearer for a civilized community.” The Campus on the Lake department now features more than 250 cultural offerings that draw 10,000 attendees per year. “Everybody loves the Four Arts and they love what has happened here,” Charland said. “People from Stuart down to Boca Raton come to our programs, and that is what Fitz Dixon wanted. What an honor to have been a part of that.” Charland’s successor at Campus on the Lake is Sofia Vollmer Maduro, who started at the Four Arts on September 24.
“I am delighted that Sofia will take over,” Charland said. “She is the right person at the right time. As I am gifting her my remarkable colleagues Donamarie Vallee and Stephanie Grant, she will be in great hands.” Now that she’s retired, Charland expects to spend more time with her husband, Bob. They have been married for 40 years, and plan to stay in the Palm Beach area. “I intend to enjoy the Four Arts and Campus on the Lake in retirement,” Charland said. “I have had such a brilliant time here. It’s been so much fun. Time to go!” 9
