FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Four Arts members and friends, Welcome to the Spring edition of our Folio newsletter. We are pleased to present this publication and hope you will be able to come to The Society of the Four Arts to enjoy our programs or take advantage of our increased online programming options. A year ago, we were moving quickly to shut down the 2019-20 season with COVID on the horizon. While we re-opened prior to the start of the 2020-21 season, we knew this would be a year unlike any previous. Through new policies and procedures, despite program cancellations and adjustments, through innovations like Zoom and virtual program viewings, we have remained open and here for you, serving as a beacon of hope to the greater Palm Beach community. Now we look forward to increased vaccination numbers, decreased virus numbers, and a chance for life to return to its more normal trajectory. As we begin to plan another full season for 2021-22, I hope you will enjoy our spring offerings, detailed in the following pages. The ongoing exhibition Charles and Jackson Pollock is one dear to me, having organized and co-curated the exhibition with Otto Hübner of the American Contemporary Art Gallery in Munich after a previously scheduled exhibition was postponed to the 2023 season. Jackson Pollock is a celebrated name in art history, but this exhibition highlights little known aspects of Jackson’s work and introduces the viewer to the abstract painting of his eldest brother Charles. I also encourage you to visit Dale Chihuly’s Fiori installations and Philip Haas’s The Four Seasons in the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden. Both the sculpture and botanical gardens are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are a source of relaxation and comfort. The gardens will also be hosting the Garden Club of Palm Beach’s “Garden In Bloom” Flower Show April 10-11 and the family-friendly concert screening, “Leave it to Ludwig,” on April 17. Thanks to a grant from an anonymous donor, The Four Arts has been able to improve its streaming and online technology and offer more virtual programming. We intend to increase our programs available to view online this spring and next season, and ask that you check www.fourarts.org regularly for updates. The Four Arts campus will continue this spring with concerts, lectures, book discussions, open libraries, classes, and much more. We hope to see you here at The Four Arts. Sincerely,
Philip Rylands Spring 2021 Folio

Don’t miss Charles and Jackson Pollock Charles and Jackson Pollock brings together, for the first time, art by two brothers: Jackson Pollock (1912-1956), the most famous and arguably most important American painter of the 20th century, and Charles (1902-1988), his eldest brother, whose career and reputation are less well-known. The exhibition is cocurated by Four Arts President & CEO Philip Rylands and Otto Hübner, and underwritten by members of the exhibition’s eponymous Leadership Committee. Jackson Pollock’s gestural drip painting became the prototype of what Harold Rosenberg would call “Action Painting” and the hallmark of Abstract Expressionism, the first American avant-garde of international influence. This exhibition features around 25 works of Jackson Pollock, revealing a side of the artist little known to the general public through paintings, drawings, his sole surviving sculpture, and a wide selection of prints. “The prints, drawings, and pages from a sketch notebook reveal more of his inner workings,” said Rebecca A. Dunham, The Four Arts’ head of fine arts and curator. “You can see him working out ideas before implementing them in a finished artwork. Most people know of Jackson Pollock from his drip paintings, but this exhibition touches upon other aspects of his life and his creative family.” Charles took up painting and drawing at the age of 15, fascinating his four younger

brothers, and encouraged Jackson to pursue art. It was Charles who brought Jackson to New York City to study at the Art Students League under Thomas Hart Benton, and both were indoctrinated with Benton’s Regionalism. While Jackson stayed on in New York City and became a central figure in the nascent avant-garde, Charles worked for the Resettlement Administration in Washington and for the WPA before accepting a professorship at Michigan State University. He too, in the mid-1940s, turned to abstraction. The exhibition displays about 70 of Charles Pollock’s works, including a wide variety of drawings, prints, and paintings organized chronologically into thematic groupings. Visitors can trace Charles’ development from his Chapala series in the 1950s to his “PostRome” works in the 1960s to his Arches series in the 1980s. “Charles’ work is more structured and resembles ‘color field’ painting,” Dunham said. “It’s more contemplated, where Jackson’s work is more about whatever was flowing creatively out of him at that moment. Charles has a different mode of operation, a different way of creating an abstract work.”

Hübner, the director of the American Contemporary Art Gallery in Munich, Germany, which represents Charles Pollock’s estate, helped The Four Arts organize the exhibition. The exhibition also features two four-legged stools used by Jackson Pollock as he produced his works, along with two photos of Jackson at work by famed art photographer Hans Namuth. A self-guided tour is available for smart devices by clicking on fourarts.oncell.com. The Four Arts hopes that visitors to this exhibition gain a deeper understanding of Jackson Pollock and a welcome introduction to Charles Pollock. “While Jackson Pollock was the more important painter during his lifetime,” Dunham said, “this show sheds light on the fact that Jackson had an older brother Charles who was also an extremely gifted and talented painter.”

Spring is the perfect season to visit The Four Arts gardens The Society of the Four Arts has an ideal option for anyone looking to get fresh air and exercise while staying socially distanced this spring: The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden and Four Arts Botanical Gardens. An oasis in the middle of the Four Arts campus, the gardens have provided an arcadian experience to visitors of the Palm Beaches since 1938. Explore the floral paths, ponds, and fountains in a flowing green space of two distinct and unique gardens. The Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden has evolved over time to become an urban oasis with numerous park-like elements, including areas of seating, an elegant plaza, a classical garden pavilion, water fountains, and a grand lawn. Other features include a palm grove and four pergolas, all of which enhance the presentation of the garden’s modern and contemporary sculptures. The Four Arts Botanical Gardens, managed and maintained by The Garden Club of Palm Beach, offer a respite of quiet repose from the busy activities of daily life. Originally designed in 1938, the Botanical Gardens are demonstration gardens that educate residents and visitors about the diversity of plants that thrive in South Florida’s climate.

In addition to the general splendor of the gardens, they also are the host for three exhibitions this spring. Dale Chihuly’s Fiori features two installations on display through Sunday, May 2. Chihuly, an American artist noted for revolutionizing the studio glass movement and elevating perceptions of the glass medium, has placed Black and Yellow Herons and Red Bulbous Reeds in the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden, each demonstrating the artist’s penchant for organic, free flowing forms that evoke the natural world. Also on display in the Pannill Pavilion is contemporary American artist Philip Haas’ The Four Seasons. These four painted fiberglass sculptures depicting Spring, Summer, Autumn, and Winter complete their run at The Four Arts on Wednesday, March 31. The sculptures are inspired by the paintings of Italian Mannerist Giuseppe Arcimboldo (1526/1527–1593), in which the physical features of the four figures are rendered in floral, fruit and vegetables appropriate to each season. Bill Murray chooses The Four Arts for world premiere of new concert program Catch “Americas, with Bill Murray” at The Society of the Four Arts! Iconic actor Bill Murray (Ghostbusters, Groundhog Day, Lost in Translation) provides the narration and vocals for this unique live performance, which breaks down barriers between classical and popular music, between continents and cultures, and between music and the spoken word. Latin America meets North America in an entirely different kind of program: Beethoven collides with Bolivar, “Guantanamera” meets Charlie Chaplin, Aztec poetry encounters Don Quixote, and Borges leads to Brahms. Traveling through the history and cultures of the Americas, we encounter a tremendous range of vibrant artistic styles: music that pulsates with rhythm; literature that embraces the poetic and the magical; and poetry that sings of beauty, comedy, tragedy, farce, and drama. Bill Murray, with his incomparable ability to break our hearts while doubling us over with laughter, drives home these universal messages as no one else could. - story continues on Page 10

Venezuelan pianist Vanessa Perez, who performed in “New Worlds,” and American arranger Stephen Buck found inspiration to create this program in their own lives, and in the universal human themes in the parallels between North and South American history. Perez helped connect The Four Arts with Murray and set up the performance here. The Four Arts is grateful to Bill Murray for agreeing to perform in Palm Beach. Per his request, The Four Arts also is hosting an invitation-only performance for teachers and first responders in the Palm Beach area. Joining Murray and Perez are violinist Philippe Quint, who performed “Charlie Chaplin’s Smile” with Perez at The Four Arts in January, and Suzanne Farrin on the ondes Martenot. This eclectic quartet, inspired by the abundant diversity of the American continents and driven by the economic and political events of the present, joins forces for a performance that will be impossible to forget.

WITH GRATITUDE The Four Arts Receives Generous Gift in Support of Virtual Programming Thanks to the generous support of an anonymous donor, The Society of the Four Arts is converting parts of its 2020-21 programming content for virtual viewing. The $300,000 gift has allowed The Four Arts to move forward in presenting a robust season of arts and culture education experiences despite circumstances related to the current public health crisis. The challenges presented by COVID-19 include speakers and performers who are reluctant or unable to travel as well as a steep and expensive learning curve for staff who have been asked to film, edit, and present online content. “In the past few months our
Programming and Technical staff have had to acquaint themselves with an entirely different operating model. This gift has allowed us to supplement our efforts with high quality equipment and training,” said Four Arts President & CEO Philip Rylands. Over 100 programs from book discussions to art exhibitions and the Esther B. O’Keeffe Speakers Series will include a high-quality virtual option. Members have been receiving weekly emails announcing virtual content available through the Member Portal, and more online programs will be made available to the general public beginning this spring.
More Generous Gifts We are pleased to share highlights of recent generous gifts made to The Society of the Four Arts:
