I saw the revival of Into the Woods on Broadway in the fall of 2003. I was 22 years old and had moved to New York that summer. I was working two survival jobs and had a total of $18 in my checking account. A friend offered me a free ticket. Into the Woods was the first show I saw on Broadway. I had moved to New York to become a Broadway actor but had never actually seen a show on Broadway. Some may find this romantic; most may find it ridiculous. In hindsight, I fall squarely into the latter category. Regardless, there I sat in the last row of the balcony, rolling my program into a tube and naively imagining myself backstage, preparing for the curtain to open.
There are many exaggerated or overly romanticized ideas of what working on Broadway is like. For this, I largely blame NBC’s SMASH. That show was more M*A*S*H than Broadway. But there is one ludicrously romantic idea of what “Broadway” is—and all the world that noun encompasses—that is most definitely true: Broadway is a dream.
Before your throat spasms and your stomach churns from histrionic poisoning, I don’t mean that working on Broadway is a dream. The day-to-day life of an actor or stagehand working on Broadway is actually more akin to the characters on HBO’s Severance. The next time you’re in Times Square, keep an eye out for the bedraggled-looking power walker whose downturned gaze scans for open sidewalk and perilous street goo. She’ll be walking in the bike lane at a steady 11 mph pace, Juice Generation in hand, with a look of exhaustion and quiet dignity. At the theater, she’ll fling open the stage door, say a quiet hello to the doorman, then suddenly, her eyes will roll back in her head, and she’ll become someone else entirely.
I guess what I’m trying to say is that living and working as an artist requires a state of irrationality. In order to create, we must close our eyes to the rejections, the failures, and the personal costs and accept the reality of the dream.
With my free ticket in the back row of the theater, Stephen Sondheim taught me to dream—not to wish, or hope, or fantasize, but to live beautifully and find meaning despite the chaos of life. Act I of Into the Woods was everything I had lived up until that moment: a wish. Act II was what I was living in that moment: reality. I had lost my mother to cancer that summer. I had moved away from my family and friends. I was broke. Auditions felt like casting a bobber into the Atlantic Ocean.
Life was unfair. I felt so naive.
Cinderella sings to Little Red in Act II:
“Mother isn’t here now Wrong things, right things Who knows what she’d say? Who can say what’s true? Nothings quite so clear now. Do things, fight things, Feel you’ve lost your way?”
This is why we tell stories—because sometimes wishes come true. And their truth can be more than we can bear. But Sondheim, Cinderella, and these young artists are here to remind you that when it’s:
“Hard to see the light now. Just don’t let it go. Things will come out right now. We can make it so. Someone is on your side. No one is alone.”
