Reconquering the rooftops of Paris M 6 M 2

172 pages book and presentation pannels extended site - Parisian connectivity

The city can be seen as an ecosystem, a place of interactions and interdependencies. Public transportation serves this territory, creating the links needed to stimulate it and make it attractive and dynamic. The aerial metro station Barbes Rochechouart is situated at the junction of The 9th, 10th and 18th districts of Paris, and on the old limits of the city. More than 10 million passengers, commuters, tourists stop or transit at this station every year. Stressing the importance of this metropolitan hub as a structural point of the city articulating transportation, public space and a diversity of services gives it a chance to participate in territorial cohesion.

Along the ramp different spa stations with hot tubs, jacuzzi, saunas.

Sun deck and restaurant the sun deck is the last ‘station’ of the ramp. The restaurant is a dry area accessible front the street or the entrance of the metro.

Rooftop park Accessible from the street and the entrance of the metro, and later on in the process of spread out rooftop development from the public rooftops of the extended rooftop stroll.

Urban Rooftop Parc In the preliminary analysis of Parisian rooftops and their possible utilisation, we have come up with 2 different grids that will be the base for this future development. One is a large grid made up of public buildings and infrastructures. It will be decided on a political level and accessible to the public. The other grid will depend on the set-up of the first one and will allow individual initiatives. Thus creating a rich life above the city. The swimming pool complex above the metro station Barbes-Rochechouart will be the first step that will encourage rooftop appropriation. The Louxor cinema next door could have outdoor screenings on its roof, the nearby student hostel could simply link itself to the park...

As the topography sediments, its rhythm is marked by events: it accelerated at the entrances of the different metros and the entrance of the train station for example. The many elements of the project are organized around this canyon that links the underground transportation to the shopping mall, the train station, the existing park with its new sports facilities, the existing collective housing and allows access to the new horizontal buildings that run along it. These long buildings leave the street free and allow porosity, making the neighbourhood more

inviting and easier to ‘use’.

This large object creates a significant number of new apartments, 3 cultural equipments, and sports facilities. It also reorganises the access to the train station, the layout of the shopping mall and the public space around it by generating its own particular urban park. It is a tool of transformation that is bound to stimulate its surroundings even though it works as an individual organism.

The ‘territory of creation’ is a city more complex and more familiar at the same time. This is the direct result of the Greater Paris competition started by the french government in 2009. The analysis of the metropolitan situation of Paris and its suburbs led to this specific project on the site of Plaine Commune and Saint-Ouen north of Paris. The high concentration of pre-existing headquarters of the creative industry makes this area a good receptacle for the ‘cluster of creation’ . This project will develop over a long time span, it is complex and deals with different scales and components of the urban fabric.

14 different scenarios organised in 5 areas are projected. Together they create a complex territory that offers possibilities of urban continuity. The center of this project is the augmented train station. It is the the combination of a train station with its urban branches that reach into

the city, a numeric park on a large slab used as a bridge and it goes all the way to the old ‘Cathedrals of Saint-Denis and the the future cinema studios by the Seine. The station is a place of urban intensity at the intersection of all the flux and scales. It is the founding act of this new territory.

Exhibition of Finnish design September-October 2011

Finnoir Sattelite event of the World Design Capital Helsinki 2012 technical documents/exhibition

At the very back of the exhibition space, under a naturally lit dome, a certain number of pieces; photos, collages, spacial structures complete the experience.

As the World Capital of Design 2012, Helsinki is seeking to export its ‘savoir faire’. The combination of this design context and the Paris fashion week in October 2011 led to Finnoir, an overall visual experience presenting 17 artists, designers, photographers and illustrators, chosen for their influence on current Finnish Fashion.

Emergency exit

The beautiful space has been organized by Aino Avantera, Finnish space designer living in London and her partner Federica Capitani. Aino an Federica imagined a dark space with scattered platforms past which one strolls, and turns as if in a forest. Different videos and an eerie musical playlist contribute in a Finnish fairytale atmosphere.
