heroine no. 1
Kareena Kapoor has done it again. Even though the crown of being numero uno in the business has been pretty much on her head for years now, her recent terrific run at the box office with backto-back 100 crore blockbusters have announced loud and clear that she is the Queen of Bollywood.
The DIVA
Unleashed! 6
TeleLIFE
Guess this rocking phase is all set to continue, what with her upcoming films like Dhuaan, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, Agent Vinod and Heroine being entirely different from each other. With a great run behind her and many more up her sleeve, Kareena need not worry about any competition. Meanwhile, even though the No.1 crown sits pretty on her head currently, Kareena has always maintained that the numbers game doesn’t quite matter to her. Yet in an industry where money talks, does she still stick to her stand that being acknowledged as a commercially viable superstar doesn’t matter? “Of course it does matter”, says Kareena calling

etractors may term her manipulative, calculative, scheming and what not, the fact remains that she is the first name that comes to the minds of the biggest of filmmakers when they want to announce their mega budget projects. She may or may not be the central or an integral part of the whole affair but in an industry where a leading lady is known by the strength she lends to a project, Kareena is obviously ruling the roost. Tell her this and she starts walking the diplomatic path (before opening up like never before!). “Honestly, there was no game-plan; everything just happened and things
fell into place”, smiles Kareena, even as it’s quite obvious that the conversation is going to take a non-diplomatic route sooner or later. “I don’t think I’ve ever made a statement that I want to be in this film or that film. But yes, I have selected the best from what has come my way. Now if all the Khans offer me their films at the same time, it just shows that God has been kind to me. I can’t plan that Salman, Shah Rukh, Aamir, Saif and Imran make movies at the same time. If that has indeed happened in a matter of two years, it’s pretty much a coincidence. Having said that, I must add that I am loving every moment that is coming my way,” says Kareena. With 3 Idiots, Golmaal 3 and Bodyguard already raking in over 100 crores at the box office each and Ra.One joining the fray, she is now the only actress whose films have done business of over 100 crores. While for Kareena, it was a blast working on the aforementioned films, one can well guess it was the lure of being part of the ‘biggest film’ and being paired with the ‘biggest hero’ that made her say yes to Ra.One when it came her way.
spade a spade here. “After all, in this industry, you are as good as your last film. Eventually it is all about the commercial viability of the stars. Bollywood is about entertainment; this is what sells here and we can’t change that. In fact, we must not try to change that and balance it all. This is what I have and will always believe in; one needs to play the balancing act. I may try to please everyone but at the end of it, I basically have to entertain my fans. I can and should never forget that basic aspect of my journey as an actress,” she says. This is why Kareena plays the balancing act so well. Otherwise, what else can explain her willingness to work with a young leading man like Imran Khan when all her blockbusters so far have been with men who are aged at least 40 years or above? “Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is the kind of film that I haven’t done for a really long time so yes, I am pretty much doing a balancing act here,” agrees Kareena. “I am enjoying this phase in my career where I am shifting genres with practically every film and now with this film, I am getting into a Hollywood style romcom space. There are hardly any movies belonging

year. “Frankly, Saif’s whole life currently revolves around Agent Vinod. He is super excited about the film and has worked hard on it with the director Sriram, “says Kareena with a genuine sense of fondness in her tone. We wonder if Saif Ali Khan and Kareena’s chemistry on screen is why Agent Vinod is special for her, to which Kareena retorts, “Let’s get it right, as an actor, I don’t go around building chemistry with any actor out there; it’s the script that builds the chemistry,” reasons Kareena, “An actor alone can’t do anything. Things like screenplay, dialogues, editing and so many other factors come into play. There is nothing that can be done if I am in a relationship with my co-star or if he is a lover or a friend. Look at Bodyguard; I wasn’t in a relationship with Salman in real life but there was such fantastic chemistry on screen (in Bodyguard). On the other hand, even though Saif was my real life partner even during the days of to this genre in Bollywood and trust me when I say that this is one film which will also make the critics happy.” Talking about criticism despite four huge films behind her in a matter of few years, there have been detractors who have tried to dilute her success with their own opinions. Although in the business for over a decade without being flustered by loose talk, it may be about time that she stops taking things lying down. “See, what is going to happen is going to happen, I have moved on from that stage where I have to sit and wonder how much business my next film is going to do. Eventually no amount of reviews or any sort of detraction can change the way a film is going to be accepted by the audience,” she says. Talking about films that may indeed require brains to be appreciated, Agent Vinod pretty much tops the list. Announced over a year-and-a-half ago, this Sriram Raghavan film is just not coming anywhere near the finishing line. A spy thriller with Saif Ali Khan in the title role, isn’t the delay getting a little too frustrating for the actor couple? “We are now in the last schedule of the film,” says Bebo with a sense of
8
TeleLIFE
I WILL ALWAYS BE 10 STEPS BEHIND KARISMA AT EVERY STAGE OF MY CAREER. reassurance in her voice. “Honestly speaking, Agent Vinod has taken just the right amount of time that a film of this scale really requires. It is just that because the film has been in the news for such a long time, there is this perception amongst a few out there that it is taking a lot of time to complete. Do you know it has some serious action sequences on the same scale as any other big budgeted James Bond kind of film? Agent Vinod does require some elaborate shooting schedules spread over months. It is a very big film and we are into the last leg now. Saif, Sriram and Dinesh (Vijan) are working out the logistics to see how soon we can release it. Perhaps in the first quarter of next year,” informs Kareena. However, one wonders how Saif Ali Khan is taking the delay of his production since he only had a stray Aarakshan (where he merely enjoyed an extended guest appearance of sorts) to his credit this
Kurbaan, the film didn’t do very well. It is ultimately the vision of the director that drives everything. This is what Sriram has put into place for Agent Vinod. You would see that due to the kind of scenes and dialogues which have been written for Saif and me, our chemistry would indeed be really sizzling!” Before one wonders whether Kareena regrets having a busy schedule instead of basking in the glory of being the busiest superstars, she cheers up, stating, “Looking on the brighter side, this is something I always wanted. I love working, it is my passion. Acting is great and fortunately I have worked in some fun films in the last couple of years. So no regrets here.” Talking about being fortunate, Kareena indeed can be termed ‘super fortunate’ here, what with Madhur Bhandarkar’s
Heroine falling back into her lap with a fatter pay check! Guess, it is destiny playing tricks here? Kareena smiles, “Yeah, everyone is saying that Heroine was destined for me and the way the shift of events has happened, even I am beginning to believe it now! The role I play in Heroine is simply superb and I am pretty much kicked to give it my all. It is already one of the most talked about films of next year and I am sure that if we put in the right kind of energy, Heroine can be something really special.” Did she have a problem, consenting to do the film after Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, had already started work on it? “See, actors do films on the basis of a script that comes their way instead of thinking about whether it had reached another actor or not,” Kareena makes a stern statement here, “Also, let’s not forget that Madhur had offered this film first to me as good as one-and-a-half years ago. When I couldn’t do it, he went ahead with someone else. The fact that Madhur came back to me and I am doing it is because it’s a great film and that is all that matters,” she says. This also means that after two back-toback male oriented films (Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji and Jail), Madhur is returning to his first love – a female oriented film! “And trust me when I say Heroine would be very edgy and sensational with a lot of drama,” says Bebo. “Madhur is a great director and he has the knack of keeping the audience interested in his stories. Heroine promises a lot as there would be songs, drama and a lot of edginess to the narrative. This is exactly what Madhur’s speciality is; he brings in all the required ingredients in a film in his own unique way. Really, I can see Heroine turning out to be something really special,” she asserts. While Salman’s Ek Tha Tiger and Dabangg 2 will further heat up the competition as they are expected to hit a century, Kareena’s Dhuaan (with Aamir Khan) is also a definite 100 crore plus film. This pretty much indicates that in 2012, the competition would mainly be between Salman and Kareena more than anyone else!
While there is no stopping Bebo today, 2012 could bring competition closer home from sister Karisma making a comeback with Vikram Bhatt’s Dangerous Ishq. “Now isn’t she looking like a million bucks today?” gleams Kareena. “In fact, she is looking better than any of us actresses on the scene. She has always been a fabulous actress and now that she is back on the sets, it is indeed the most excited phase of her career. She too believes this is the right film for her at this stage and we all are sure that Vikram will take Dangerous Ishq far ahead of
Haunted that ended up being a winner early this year,” adds Kareena. Here’s a little wishful thinking: Kareena and Karisma fighting it out for the top slot in next couple of years! Now how would that be for the industry and fans? “I don’t think that will ever happen,” says Bebo with a wide grin. “I will always be 10 steps behind Karisma at every stage of my career. I love and respect her beyond films. The day she comes on screen again, she would be the undisputed queen of Hindi cinema,” says a beaming Kareena.

hey say there is no formula to get into this business. People have broken barriers and borders to try their luck in Bollywood. The stepping stone however seems a bit more accessible for the ones with an influential ancestry. That sounds about right? Wrong. Harman Baweja, Juhi Babbar, Tanisha and Uday Chopra have certainly proved that here, the lineage does not maketh a star.
Tanuj, Narmada and Sooraj
For the new kids on the block, while their genes have provided them the looks, their grit is helping them fill up other gaps. Some are taking the long route, learning the nuances of cinema, while the others are confident about their natural talent. Don’t be surprised for they have had enough current examples to learn from. The gen next is getting in with its share of six packs and controversies alike. But at the end of the day, even with the star blood in their veins, hard work is one thing they are not shy about. Take for instance, the once hardly noticeable Mimoh Chakraborty, son of Mithunda. Sporting a bygone hairstyle, a beefed up body and armed with a catchy nickname, he aspired to create a splash

Alia is barely out of school and so she might fit the student part well. Varun meanwhile is not leaving any stones unturned for his debut. A degree holder in finance and accounting from the Nottingham University, Varun Dhawan took a u-turn to come back to acting. Working under Barry John, he studied acting and followed it up with an advance course. He then learnt some moves at the Pineapple Dance Studio under Sanjay Yadav in Mumbai. As a kid, Varun has faced the camera for commercials like Pepsi and Real juice.

Then reality hit and Mimoh decided to tone down his body, chop his tresses, brush up his acting skills and came back as Mahakshay Chakraborty with the blockbuster, Haunted 3D in his pocket. Now, it is for us to see what Mahakshay hits or misses in the future. Before we take names, an interesting facet about the whole deal is the way our producers seem to be cashing in on the trend. Yash Raj, Dharma Productions and even the arty director, Aparna Sen are a part of this festival. Maybe, it is the mixture of a good looking face and the free publicity that attracts them to these hot bloods. Karan Johar’s next directorial venture, Student of the Year, has three newcomers, two out of which are star kids. Mahesh Bhatt and Soni Razdan’s daughter Alia Bhatt is with director David Dhawan’s son, Varun Dhawan in the film. As attractive as the cast looks, Karan Johar has made sure that no news of them is out in the papers. The lead actors in the movie are bound by a contract that forbids them and their immediate relatives to talk about the movie or the

If all this was not enough, his training continues even after he has bagged a film. Varun is currently learning to play the drums and the guitar for Student of the Year. What happens to the movie remains to be seen, but Varun scores a high ten in our books. In other quarters, Yash Raj Films is busy conceiving Virus Diwan which stars Boney Kapoor’s son, Arjun Kapoor. Arjun, who was once 140 kilos, looks sleek and smart after his weight loss for the movie. Having assisted on the sets of Kal Ho Na Ho and Salaam-eIshq, Arjun is starting out with a full-fledged solo movie on his shoulders. Meanwhile, Jackie Shroff ’s six pack endorsing son, Tiger Shroff, is said to be starring in the remake of his daddy’s hit flick, Hero. e does not speak much but denies being shy. He does not smile much but denies being serious. His eyebrows raise when the photographer yells words of encouragement! Meanwhile, the lens captures his coffee eyes, twinkling wildly in perfect contrast with the black jacket he is wearing. His mesmerising pair of eyes seems to be an inherited asset. Aditya Pancholi and Zarina Wahab’s son, Sooraj Pancholi, has decided to put his good looks to good use. A Taekwondo black belt and a gym freak, Sooraj is certainly eyeing the tinsel town, albeit a bit differently than the rest.
It was around five years ago that he decided to be an actor. Realising the fact that academics was not really his gift, Sooraj had to dampen mom Zarina’s dream to see him as a pilot. Eventually, seeing his passion and focus to be in the movies got the parents eager as well. Sooraj started his stint by working under the maverick, Sanjay Leela Bhansali, as an assistant director for Guzaarish. Watching Hrithik and Aishwarya act only thrilled him further. “One thing I realised was that acting was actually very tough. Today, you cannot trick people with just a few action scenes. Acting is equally important.” Sooraj ideally wants an action movie to be his launch pad. A big banner is a must although he does not really eye a dream director to work with. However, what he does dream about, he reveals, is acting alongside Katrina Kaif. Even though he is taking time to choose his first film, Sooraj has started his preparations head on.
Being a gym freak, Sooraj’s bulky frame wasn’t well appreciated by Sanjay. Nevertheless, even after it has toned down, his biceps still bulge through his jacket. He is done with his dance lessons, completed a phase of his acting course at the Stella Adler Acting Studio and has taken up martial arts in full swing. Regardless of all this, the smile on his parents face is what really matters to him. Talking more than just business, he says, “I want to make them feel proud of me. They have been the biggest influence in my life.” He relaxes some more and says, “My mom is always in action. She is either shooting somewhere, cooking or petting our dogs. I think I inherited her nature.” And, what about dad? “Maybe his skin tone,” he says giving a rare smile. Sooraj sure seems to be on the right track. Meanwhile, what he sees himself as at 35 is to be married with two kids and floating around with an enviable movie career. er every move spells confidence. She is yet to debut, but she knows all the ropes of the trade. She has already hired a manager, knows what makeup suits her and is a photographer’s darling. After all, being Govinda’s daughter, flashbulbs are the least you would be familiar with. Her changes have been decided upon as her sprawling Juhu home becomes our photographer’s canvas. “Let me tell you. Being a star kid does not help you get good movies. Most of the offers I received were crap.” This is how Narmmada decides to fire up the conversation. She must be used to such questions for news of her launch has been around for some time. But somehow, nothing materialised and film buffs have been curious. Now, she is determined to let her work create headlines. Even though Narmmada has always wanted to be an actor, she has her life charted more practically

than one would imagine. Having studied fashion and jewellery designing, a back-up is in place. However, right now, its movie time and plan B is not a consideration. Her critics discouraged her even before she stepped into the circus but for her, nobody would decide what’s right or what’s wrong. She says, “I don’t regret my delayed debut neither do I care about the articles that have come up. I knew I needed time to prepare myself and that is what I have done. It’s better to be prepared than be a two film wonder.” Her grit is not new found. Talking about herself as Govinda’s daughter, Narmmada doesn’t seem too disillusioned with the question. “It was very normal growing up as a star kid. As a child, I have been suspended and even failed because I bunked school to go to the sets. I was not treated as special and even if I was, it used to be embarrassing to be in the limelight,” she says. She denies the role of any mentor or any idol or even being nervous for her first film. Maybe, daddy’s advice to her is what did the trick. Not a bad decision for Narmmada has two films in her kitty. With no inhibitions and no intentions to join the Bollywood leagues, she seems to have made an impression for sure. Controversies or not, Narmmada is only waiting for her chance and when she gets it, she is going to make sure that she has a long tenure in Bollywood.

Another child treading on his father’s career lines is Siddhant Kapoor. Shakti Kapoor’s son and Shraddha Kapoor’s little brother, Siddhant, is currently a DJ by profession but has been reported to be signed in the remake of Satte Pe Satta to play the role his dad played in the original. Then in the list we have the popular yet media shy Ahana Deol, who, if rumours are to be believed, is finally gathering her guts to come in front of the camera soon. Aparna Sen has planned to cast her in a project with a story on the lines of Romeo and Juliet. The earlier news about Ahana being more interested in direction has since died out. However, with Hema Malini and Dharmendra now concentrating to revive sis, Esha’s career, Ahana’s entry into Bollywood might take some time. Meanwhile, it’s clear that we have bid goodbye to the days when producers took the burden of grooming their leading casts to look the part. Today, much before they even sign their first movie, the star kids are already adept, having completed their homework diligently. Hrithik Roshan, Shahid Kapoor, Salman Khan, Amir Khan, Kareena Kapoor and their likes have proved the fact that the star kids phenomenon isn’t just hype. The next generation has arrived and is expertly strutting its stuff. Now, it’s for Bollywood to gear up for a starstudded renaissance.

TANUJ VIRWANI, WANTS TO BE A GOOD ACTOR THAN BECOME A STAR… His other interviews have inadvertently tagged him as effortlessly handsome. Yet, it’s something more than just good looks that catch your eyes when you look at Tanuj Virwani. He talks nineteen to the dozen and his excitement fits perfectly with the stance of a new comer. Son of yesteryear actress Rati Agnihotri and real estate tycoon Anil Virwani, Tanuj is a clear reflection of her talent and his father’s creativity. He has already written, acted and directed three short films before his friend dragged him to a random audition. Getting his makeup done for the photo session did not really stop him from sharing his experience with us. He narrates, “One of my friends was working with BR Films and he saw my picture on Facebook. He called me to a dingy room in the suburbs one day and asked me to audition. Before I could make sense of what was happening, I was hooked to a sound mike and dabbed on with makeup. I felt almost claustrophobic. When the camera was turned on, I looked at them blankly and in a few seconds, was out of the room while the director yelled angrily in the background.” But even after this fiasco, his real life drama during the audition struck a chord with the team. The director called him back and after a screen test, signed him for his upcoming movie. Even though the film was shelved later on, Tanuj today has a completed movie to look forward to. Before he talks about Luv U Soniyo, Tanuj wants to change for the photo shoot and from the other room, continues to chatter about his journey till here. As Rati entered once more into films with Kuch Khatti Kuch Meethi, Tanuj slowly realised his true calling would be the same. For starters, diction courses took care of his craggy Hindi and the occasional stammer while classes with Kishore Namit Kapoor taught him the basics of acting.
Tanuj was an assistant director for Chance Pe Dance and Aao Wish Karien. Being on the sets gave him a practical feel of what it really takes to be an actor and watching Shahid Kapoor act has convinced him that hard work is the right way to go. While Tanuj is on the threshold of stardom, Rati has given him her word of advice and the sonny boy promises to adhere by it. He says, “She told me never to let success go to my head and failure go to my heart. Being grounded is what works. I am sure there will be controversies, but being a star kid means dealing with a double edged sword.” Even a film background did not prevent him from having the jitters on the sets. But, the mantra is to be positive and concentrate on the matter at hand. This year would determine whether Tanuj is really a chip off the old block or not. His approach certainly gives a promising scenario. With Aamir Khan as his inspiration, the newcomer is convinced that he’d rather be a good actor than run the race towards stardom. Striving for quality, he sounds both realistic and passionate as he says, “If my character and this movie make a person think about their first love, then for me, my job as an actor has worked

It was shocking news and the reports of Omar’s plans to marry a Delhi-based popular television news anchor hailing from his state, created a huge stir. Concerned about these reports, Omar called the reports ‘completely false

A British citizen, Fauja Singh took eight hours, 11 minutes and 5.9 seconds where the winner took two hours, nine minutes and 51 seconds and came in 3,850th place. Astonishingly, the organisers could not wait for him and they dismantled the banners and barricades while he was still running. Though he didn’t win the race, he won many hearts. Having run a distance of 26.2 million, he is not just the oldest man ever to complete a marathon, but also the one to break eight world records. A website, fashionscandal, reported the latest addition to this juicy tale—the ridiculous amount that was paid as settlement. According to the website, the settlement between them came at a ridiculously high amount of ` 100 crores! Well, certainly, Omar is the real loser here—with the wife gone, he’s also out of pocket by a lot of money. Maybe, his rumoured girlfriend can bring some solace to the otherwise devastated CM.

e realise that it’s a tough world and every field needs its share of attention seekers. But, the matter is stretched a bit far when a personality in the field of science admits to faking his research studies—dozens of them. Diederik Stapel, an eminent social psychologist, has admitted to bluffing his research in his career spanning decades. Even though he considers his field, social psychology, as ‘big, interesting, beautiful and strong,’ the dozens of research papers that he has authored and co-authored are being questioned today. His studies include insightful topics such as the effects of beauty product advertisements on consumer self-esteem and how urban decay (like littered streets) promotes stereotyping and discrimi-nation. These topics have since been the basis for other studies. As sick as the whole thing is, it’s unfortunate that the matter will have farfetched effects simply because of Dr Stapel’s greed for a few headlines.

ow, there are many types of fish in our Bolly pond as you all know. The first are the people who would fake, not only their physical features, but also have no qualms over claiming that they have multiple talents divinely thrust into them. Be it Mallika Sherawat and her jalebi making skills or Deepika Padukone bending her back enough to believe that viewers are convinced with her figure skating act. The recent being our very charming Kapoor kid carrying around his bad-ass guitar and a heartbroken face to each of his movie promotions. However, a change from these youngsters is Bollywood’s ever-so-angry-man, Nana Patekar, who was anything but boasting about his talents. During a press conference at Achyut Palav’s calligraphy artwork exhibition in Mumbai recently, Nana seemed to be in a light hearted mood, joking about his days at the art college. Not many know that Nana himself has studied calligraphy once. But, what moved us was Nana openly suggesting Achyut to hang one of Nana’s creations in Achyut’s next show for a not-so-profitable cause. “My calligraphy is good enough for one reason. Achyut’s designs are so amazing that I suggest he hang one of my paintings in one corner to ward off the evil eye.” Now, none of us have seen how Nana paints, but for his rather unexpected modesty, we give him full marks.

irstly, it was extremely refreshing to see a few socialites taking time off their work to organise a seminar to discuss a peace proposal to be sent to the United Nations by Dr Daisaku Ikeda than attend glamourous soirees and ‘charity evenings’. Page 3 regulars like Tisca Chopra, Ishita Arun and Anuj Saxena were spotted in the seminar which had speakers like Gerson Da Cunha, Rajni Bakshi and Abha Singh on the dais. The seminar mostly spoke about Dr Ikeda’s suggestion on needing a paradigm shift and recognising that the leadership is found in the creative capacities of ordinary people. Abha Singh however took the idea forward and easily won applause when she said, “Wars are started by old people. It may be the President of a country, it may be a dictator, who takes a decision, but it is the young soldier who goes and dies. The decision making has to come to the youth.” We think so too. Youth is the new mantra and nobody could have said it better.

VIJU’S VIDEO
B
oxing champ, Vijender Singh, has landed himself into trouble by starring in a music video along with model and reality show contestant, Susheel Jangira. He asserts in varied interviews that it was aired without his permission. As per reports, Vijender had threatened legal action against Susheel for ‘breaking his trust’ as the video was released two years after he had shot for it. Meanwhile, Susheel has an opposing argument stressing on the fact that she had not only starred, but also produced the video and now wanted her money back. In the video, a shirtless Viju is seen shaking a leg with the skimpilyclad model on a beach. Although his agents have forcefully pulled the video off air, Susheel has served a whopping ` 50 lakh notice asking for compensation as her life’s savings have been invested in this video, according to newspaper reports. Viju’s explanation about getting married in the meantime and therefore being uncomfortable with the video is something unacceptable to Jangira. Surely, the knock-out punch in this case is yet to be dealt with and the match is still on.

he exquisite enamel art of Jammu and Kashmir has got a fresh lease of life, thanks to the Jammu and Kashmir princess, Jyotsna Singh, daughter of Dr Karan Singh, who is a descendant of Maharaja Hari Singh of J&K. Dr Karan Singh has been India’s cultural ambassador for years and is presently the president of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations (ICCR). The daughter seems to be following her father’s footsteps religiously. The princess-turned-enamel sculptor is reviving Jammu’s traditional art of enamel, terracotta and miniature paintings that have been ignored for many years. She is keen on reviving the historic museum and library of 1890, the Amar Mahal, in Jammu, which would sell rare photographs of prominent personalities from the state. “J&K has not been an active cultural place. As we don’t have a centre for promoting Jammu art, the Amar Mahal museum would be a place for training people about miniature paintings, enamel art, terracotta, papier mache and Islamic calligraphy,” says Jyotsna, who has also procured an old photograph of her father while he was a 17-year-old. We hope, like her father, Jyotsna also becomes an agent of change for J&K.

he pillars of the fashion fraternity, Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, recently celebrated 25 years of glamour and fashion in association with Maison Moët & Chandon. With champagne flowing like water, the party, held at one of Mumbai’s best five star clubs, was grand, to say the least. While the who’s who of the glamour and entertainment industry showed up to congratulate and celebrate the talented duo’s success, the turn out at the party only spoke volumes of what happens when stalwarts like Abu and Sandeep beckon their patrons. They turn up in full volume to express their love and support. So much so that even the then mum-to-be Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, who had been keeping a very low profile, turned up for the celebration with hubby Abhishek Bachchan and mom-in-law, Jaya Bachchan. Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla ruled the roost when there weren’t many big names in the Indian fashion industry. Apart from the music and A-list attendees, there was a lifesize screen that was playing old fashion shows of the duo, backwards! It was nostalgic to see the famed models of those times walking the ramp for Abu-Sandeep. We wish this celebrated duo many such successful years ahead!

he fifth season of the notorious show Bigg Boss is nothing short of a circus. While initially, speculations were rife about the boring lot of contestants on the show, the makers have been playing their trump cards well by introducing fiery contestants one after the other. Starting with TV soap’s old flame, Amar Upadhyay, followed by reality show Splitsvilla’s winner Siddharth Bhardwaj and later Akashdeep Saigal, popularly referred to as Sky, the one inclusion that defied all sense and logic was the once-an-Anna-supporter and activist, Swami Agnivesh in his saffron attire. Although his entry was seen as bringing in some calming effect that the housemates needed from all the fights and the bickering, on his first day itself, Amar and Akash had subtly indicated their insecurities. While no one

complained about Agnivesh’s entry into the house, people at the Arya Samaj were pretty miffed at his entry in the show in saffron clothes. With all eyes on Swami Agnivesh, the Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, even tweeted, ‘How long before Swami Agnivesh gets into a scrap with Pooja Misrra?’ While the swami exited from the house within three days, it remains to be seen whether it is the contestants who were influenced by the semblance of sense that the swami brought in or if it was the other way around.
nyone who has been to a high profile do would know that trickling in late to any event is considered iconic in Mumbai’s party circuit. But, what many celebs and social butterflies don’t know is that walking in while the journalists are walking out calls for loud beeps on the radar. Recently, Gayatri Ruia of Mumbai’s luxury mall Palladium, with Ramona Narang Rodella, held a block printing workshop over brunch for Ahilya, an NGO that supports women weavers, at an upscale restaurant in the same mall. While the media folks started trickling in at the allotted time, the mall’s corporate communication team took great care of the guests by taking them around. Gayatri Ruia saved the day by walking in just in time when the place was full of pretty invitees whereas Ramona Narang Rodella was nowhere to be seen. Even as journalists and guests started to make an exit, Ramona had not arrived. She was however seen in the post event pictures sent to the media. Just one word of advice Ramona—when you invite guests to a do, the least you must do as a host is to arrive on time.

here was a time when women shed their inhibitions and followed their male counterparts and broke all limits. Today, it’s time for men to take revenge. We first saw the trend on Beckham, who not only sports his wife’s underwear, but her nail paints as well. Following his footsteps is his prodigy, Cristiano Ronaldo, who was spotted with black polish on his toenails sometime ago. Then recently, macho man Johnny Depp wore blue nail-polish to a television show, formally letting forth the trend into the circles. When we have such icons being open and rather colourful about it, it’s only natural for someone to make money out of it. So, Evolution Man has come out with three shades so far for men to ‘show that they are not confined to society’s rules.’ First, fairness creams, dark circle removers and anti-perspirants and now, male nail colours. Metrosexuality is definitely on a whole new level these days.

here are two kinds of people who rule the industry – those who are publicity hungry and those who choose to be known for their work. And Mohnish Behl is certainly an actor who belongs to the latter category. When the makers of Kuch Toh Log Kahenge were looking out for an actor who could do justice to the character of Dr. Ashutosh, Mohnish was the best and only option they saw. Considering this show also required him to play a doctor, something that he’s portrayed earlier on TV, what made him do it? “I just thought that it would be interesting to explore the emotional angle that is a part of this show. It’s about a person in his mid 40s, who falls in love with a girl half his age. I love how the unlayering of his personality takes place on the show. My character is quite complex and caged about his emotions because of what has happened in his life. So I thought it was an interesting subject to work on,” he informs. One of the reasons Mohnish also took up the show was because of its producer, Rajan Shahi. “I have always wanted to work with Rajanji. The deciding factor was also the channel (Sony) it was going to be aired on. At the end of the day, everybody wants a larger footprint. You

thank God for Bade Achche... We come just after that so people who watch that stay on to watch Kuch Toh... too. We do get tremendous viewing because of that show. Besides, I think Ram (Kapoor) is doing a fabulous job in it.”
The show got a lot of critical acclaim, but the TRPs haven’t been pleasing enough. Since Mohnish is the face of the show, does that upset him? “I am not so hooked onto the TRP game. I was looking at something like a 1.5 rating but that didn’t happen,” he pauses. “I also didn’t agree with the time slot that was chosen. I thought that the 8 o’ clock time slot wasn’t right, because it’s not a children’s show. So that was a setback. Having said that, what Sony did in the second or third week is that they started a rerun at 11 o’clock. With that we got an average TRP of 1.39, which is better.”
Moving on, Mohnish’s TV career only boasts of roles that have seen him in a serious and stern avatar. Yes, he has received unprecedented amount of praise for them, but does that mean the audience will never see him in lighthearted roles? He disagrees, “I would love to comedy someday. As an actor, I feel a little tied down. How many different ways can you do the same stuff? That was one of my concerns when I took on another role as a doctor. So I had to make a conscious effort to characterize Dr. Ashutosh in a different way.”
Bade Achche Lagte Hain, which is easily a hot favourite amongst the audience at present, also airs on the same channel, that too just before Kuch Toh... So does he see it as competition? “Not at all!” he says surprised. “At this point in time,
TV might be taking up most of his time currently, but the talented actor has had his fair share of memorable roles in films too. Over 20 years of experiencing both the worlds – TV and films, which of the two mediums have been more gratifying

But I don’t know how the actress Nutan would’ve judged me.” While many TV stars are open to doing reality shows today, he insists that he will never enter that zone. “There are three kinds of reality shows. One is the musicbased reality show and I’m not a singer. I’m not a dancer either. I escaped that all these years. So thank God for that! The other is the Bigg Boss type and I’m

I don’t know how many actors would say that they’re satisfied with the kind of work they’ve done because dil always maange more. You always want more fame and appreciation. But I don’t want to compare the two mediums. I think I’ve got a lot of satisfaction from cinema as well,” he smiles. Professionally, Mohnish may always portray grim characters, but personally, the actor is the exact opposite of his on-screen persona. A father to two lovely daughters and the perfect husband to his wife Ekta, Mohnish is a lucky man. Ask him why very little is known of his personal life and he laughs, “You don’t hear about me because you don’t ask.
certainly not up for that. I love going back home to my family at the end of a tiring day. Primarily, I’m an actor by profession and I like to have a script in hand and interpret a character. So why would I do a reality show?”
I have one wife and two daughters. My elder one is 18-and-half years old. She is studying law, while my younger one is two-and-half years old. We might have a third baby too! I got married to a young lady, ran away with her when she was 21 years old. My life is about going to work and coming home. I don’t party. I don’t promote my career by being seen in parties. I don’t attend award functions. I will only attend those functions that have a personal meaning to me.”
When asked what’s in store for him in the future and he smiles, “I hope I work next year like I am working this year. I’m a very insecure person as far as my career is concerned. It’s here today, gone tomorrow,” he continues, “On a personal level, I hope my elder daughter does well in her studies. I hope my wife loves me more and more. My little one should get off her bottle and start drinking milk from a glass! It’s lovely to have her around. I have three women in my life, so it’s pretty much a king’s life though I am so busy.”
Any interview with the actor is incomplete without the mention of his late mother Nutan, who was undoubtedly one of the best actresses of her time. “She is the motivating factor in my life even today. She was very forgiving
Well, with a show that’s slowly but surely catching up and a loving family to go back to, Mohnish is not only a content actor but also a happy man. Not many actors can boast of this, but he sure is amongst the lucky few.

‘Fan’tastic Experience!
It was expected that at the Ra.One music launch held at Film City, the media would turn up by the droves. After all, it was Shah Rukh Khan’s magnum opus event for his magnum opus film and even though he might not be the No. 1 Khan this season, the media still loves him! Another person who loves him is Kareena Kapoor, as was evident by the way she stuck by his side throughout the evening. Now, she’s not ditching boyfriend Saif Ali Khan for SRK and nor is SRK ditching wife Gauri for KK. It’s just that the two were having so much fun together promoting their film’s music, they were inseparable. Someone asked SRK why he wasn’t doing more films with Kareena, given they have such great energy together, and Shah Rukh blamed the other Khans – Saif and Aamir! “She’s too busy working with the other Khans,” quipped SRK. It seems King Khan had to beg her to do a film with him (as if we believe that!). Then, he went a step further and said that if Kareena doled out dates to him easily he would do every film with her! It’s a good thing his current ‘best buddy’ Priyanka Chopra was not around to hear that comment. But you can read it here, PC!
Doosri Mannat
Talking about budgets, Shah Rukh Khan seems to be purchasing nothing less than entire buildings these days. The badshah has acquired a new, huge and lavish office for his production banner Red Chillies Entertainment. That’s quite a superhero act since his crazily expensive Ra.One did not exactly pack the punch it was expected to at the box office. The new office, which is actually an entire 10-storey building, is not only spread across 40,000 square feet but is even located in one of Mumbai’s plushest suburbs. Looking at Ra.One’s performance at the ticket counters, it won’t be surprising if he puts a ‘For sale’ board on the building soon!
It’s Criminal!
This reminds us, do you know that the media might have actually missed covering the roadside cake cutting photo-op SRK held especially for them on his birthday on November 2, outside the gate of his seaside mansion Mannat? As it happened, they were seriously delayed at the unveiling of a popular skin care brand’s new range of products. The event started late by a couple of hours and to make matters worse, the organisers persistently played a number of video commercials of their product! Finally, the media went berserk and despite brand ambassador Madhuri Dixit’s presence on stage, they demanded that the organisers stop playing the videos and end the event immediately. Poor Madhuri didn’t know where to look! If only she knew her former (super) hero SRK was waiting at his gate with cake in hand to cut for the ever-hungry media, she would have let them go sooner! If only the media knew what a super ring master SRK is! It’s criminal!

King Kaun?
At yet another filmi event in Mumbai (yes, the city does seem to be under siege by these events!), filmmaker Farhan Akthar and producer Ritesh Sidhwani too had their awkward moment with the brutal media (note the halo above our heads). This was the unveiling of the first look of Don 2 at PVR Cinemas. The poster of the film, which has the slogan ‘The King Is Back’ caught the eye of a naughty scribe present who asked Farhan whether Shah Rukh is really the ‘Bollywood King’. Without batting an eyelid, Farhan said SRK is the king in the movie. Smart boy, Farhan! No wonder Ritesh sits quietly when you’re around. He knows you’re the best at handling the media. We’re coming to you for diplomacy lessons (God knows we need it!).
Costly Costumes
Ram Gopal Varma attracts negativity into his life. Like now we hear, the maverick filmmaker is battling rising expenses of Department, which is sending the film’s budget out of control. According to reports, his female lead Laxmi Manchu’s sari cost his producers approximately a whopping rupees two lakh! That’s not all. The blouse cost approximately another rupees one lakh! We wonder if spending so much ‘laxmi’ on one outfit for this new actress was worth it. Wonder what the costumes of lead stars Sanjay Dutt, Rana Daggubati and Amitabh Bachchan have cost the makers — something in which a small budget film could be made, for sure!
Mujhse fraandship karoge?
Now, this is surely not a hoax. For all you Govinda fans, here’s a reason to rejoice. Apna Chi Chi has finally joined Facebook! While his friends and fans had been persuading him to join Facebook and Twitter for a long time, we wonder what stopped him from getting ‘social’ even as all his contemporaries have been way ahead of him and very much active on the networking sites. Guess, once a late comer, always a late comer.
Sequel Ka Clash
Now, now, it’s not what you think! It’s just that Salman and good pal Sanjay Dutt’s films seem to be clashing with each other. We’ve been told that according to a survey, Baba’s Munna Bhai Chale America is the most awaited sequel while Bhai’s Dabangg 2 comes in a close second. Now, does this mean there is going to be competition brewing between the two good buddies, known for their jigri dosti? We think not, after all, they did patch up almost instantly after their alleged quarrel at Manyata’s birthday celebration few months ago. And by the number of jaadu ki jhappis they’ve been sharing on the sets of Bigg Boss Season 5, it’s clear that they love each other. Just this month, Sallu flew to Karjat from saat samandar paar to shoot with Dutt for another episode of the show too. Baba, bhai ho toh aisa!
Diction ke liye kuch bhi karegi!
Even as other actresses claw each other to snag plum roles and item numbers, here’s a story of one who thinks of others. Not many know that Jacqueline Fernandez did most of her dubbing in Murder 2. This was possible because she took diction classes from Vinod Tharan, the same diction coach Farah Khan had hired to tutor Deepika Padukone during Om Shanti Om. Jackie was so happy with his work, she decided it was time to pay back, and inaugurated his acting school in Malad in Mumbai recently. Now, here’s a beauty with a beautiful heart.
Out, in and forgotten!
It was recently reported that Chitrangda Singh has replaced Sonakshi Sinha to perform the item number Kaafirana in Shirish Kunder’s Joker. Naturally, we have the real inside information. According to our sources, Shirish had initially planned that Sonakshi and Minissha Lamba would do the item number together, which Sonakshi flatly refused to do. If the source present on the film sets is to be believed, Sona wanted to do it solo and didnotconsider Minissha to be in her league. Shirish would have none of her starrytantrums and eventually, she lost the number to Chitrangda. Bechari Minissha, na lena na dena…

Now, we hear there is a glitch in the design of the dream pad – it has to be hundred per cent vatavaran anukool, right? So, it will be another one year or so until Abhay steps in there to reside with girlfriend Preeti Desai. Until then, he can dream on!
Ramu’s claim to fame There seems to be no stopping Amitabh Bachchan and his passion for cinema even as he nears 70! We have been informed that those who have seen him dancing on the sets of Ram Gopal Varma’s Department to one of the songs swear that the veteran actor will give many youngsters in tinsel town a run for their money. While shooting for a wedding song for Department, Big B was at his energetic and stylish best and came up with unique steps of his own, that everybody copied. His passion to give a perfect shot each time he faced the camera left the entire cast and crew spellbound. Of course, we won’t be surprised to see some nasty ‘compliments’ coming from Ramu for the Big B on a social networking site again — even if this is his own film! We understand his desperation to piggy back on Mr. Bachchan’s fame since the media only writes negative things about Ramu these days.

Soothing Scrub Ingredients: ½ cup oatmeal, ½ cup gulbandi powder (almonds), 2 tsp almond oil, 4 tbsp China clay, 2 tsp apricot kernel powder, 2 tbsp honey and 5 tbsp rose petals. y In a large steel or wooden mixing bowl, mix all the ingredients like you would a pastry dough, with your fingertips, so that it mixes well. Store in a large, moisture-proof container. y Take 2-3 tbsp of it at a time and mix with milk. Apply onto clean skin and scrub in a rotating manner.
Hair Flair Winter hair care is just as important as the skin. Your hair can become damaged due to exposure to the sun or harsh chemicals. I very often use this wonderful, pre-wash treatment to keep my hair smiling: y Ingredients: 2 tbsp olive oil, 2 tbsp almond oil, 2 tbsp jojoba oil, 2 tbsp honey and 5 drops rosemary essential oil. Heat all the oils (except rosemary) and honey in a microwave and when cool, add essential rosemary oil. Massage this warm mixture into your hair and leave on for 30 mins. Cover with a shower cap, and then wash with a mild shampoo. Hair Fall Remedy Along with dry hair comes weaker roots and hair fall nightmares… Here’s a traditional mask to reduce hair fall and
castor, mahabhringraj, brahmi, mustard and coconut; and make combinations that work for you! y Also remember, hair steaming is equally important and can be done easily these days, thanks to the microwave… Just wring out a towel with cold water and put it into the microwave for a minute. Voilà! Turban therapy in a jiffy! Chamomile & Basil Shampoo This is a mild shampoo which is great to make at home. Pick up any good herbal shampoo and get the following... y Ingredients: 1handful of chamomile flowers, 2 tbsp glycerin, 1 tbsp honey, 1 tbsp basil leaves, boiling water. y Take a steel bowl and add the flowers and leaves. Add boiling water. Let it stand for 15 mins and strain into another bowl. Add honey, glycerin and shampoo and beat well. Pour the mixture in a bottle and store in a cool, dark place. Now that you’re equipped to face winter’s woes, go ahead and wow the world!

Losing weight must be a part of almost everyone’s New Year resolution. TeleLIFE helps you lose the right way and be…
A Perfect W
eight loss is a tricky topic. But weight management is all about long-term success. People who lose weight quickly by crash dieting or other extreme measures usually gain back all (and often more) of the kilos they lost, because they haven’t permanently changed their habits. Therefore, the best weight-management strategies are those that you can maintain for a lifetime.
Top 16 Diet Rules Listed below are 16 healthy diet tips which are helpful in healthy weight reduction: 1. Start your day with a healthy and heavy breakfast. Breakfast is essential to keep your metabolism rate high and it also stabilizes your energy levels. 2. It is advisable to divide your meal into four portions. Half portion of your meal should consist of vegetables, ¼th portion of starchy products and the remaining ¼th portion of meat. Make sure that you eat the vegetable portion first. 3. Generally, it is observed that people ‘think’ they are hungry when they are actually thirsty. Hence, whenever you feel hungry, it is better to drink a glass of water first. Water will make you feel full, thereby reducing the chances of overeating. 4. In a day, drink at least two-three litres of water. 5. For effective and healthy weight loss, it is better to switch from whole milk to skim milk.

6. Effective weight loss can be attained by eliminating drinks with calories from your weight loss program. This includes carbonated drinks and juices. 7. It is advisable to have soup. It is healthy and also gives you a feeling of fullness. It is better to opt for non-cream, low calorie and high fibre soups. 8. Usually, at 3 pm, the energy levels go down, making it the perfect time for snacking. But make sure that you opt for healthy snacks like low fat yogurt, vegetables with a low calorie dip, or a small amount of nuts like almonds, walnuts etc. 9. Check your portion size. Avoid eating super-size portions. Make sure your portion size is your fist size. 10. Don’t rush while eating. Eat slowly and chew your food properly. It is observed that the brain requires 15 mins to register that the stomach is full. So if you are in a hurry while eating, there are chances of overeating. 11. Opt for low calorie condiments such as mustard in place of fatty condiments like mayonnaise. 12. It is advisable to maintain a food journal, especially when you are following
muscular strength together. 7. Don’t neglect rest as most of the repair and hypertrophy (increase in the volume of an organ or tissue due to the enlargement of its component cells) happen during the eight hours of a good night’s sleep. In fact, lower rest periods or physical or mental over exertion may release corticosteroids - fat retaining hormones - which may interfere with your weight loss program.
WORKOUTS SHOULD BE OF LONGER DURATION RATHER THAN HIGH INTENSITY. a weight loss program or diet plan. This helps you track your eating habits which may go unnoticed. 13. In case you are eating out, opt for a salad and a soup as the first and second course of the meal. This helps in reducing the consumption of high calorie food. 14. When eating out, make sure you skip the dessert. In case you are unable to resist the temptation, share it with your partner. 15. Once in a week, you can take the liberty to treat yourself. Taking a break from your diet plan helps you follow it properly afterwards. 16. Lastly, moderate your alcohol consumption. It is advisable to drink alcohol during weekends and that too within a specific range. Weight Wise Besides following a regular diet schedule, you need to follow a regular exercise routine. l Even 20-25 minutes of simple exercise a day can do wonders. l On an average, you can walk, jog, ride a bike, or swim at a moderate pace for 20-40 minutes.
l Exercise at least four-five times a week. Do it regularly, week after week. Exercise Smart Your exercise regime should also include a combination of weight training and cardiovascular workouts. It helps lose fat and firm up. Also, it is advisable to follow your regime with a partner. It makes your exercising schedule more enjoyable and you are able to follow it without fail. 1. Exercises selected in cardio should be purely focused on burning a huge amount of calories. 2. Calories burnt should be from fat oxidation, hence workouts should be of longer duration rather than high intensity. 3. Cycling, spinning, treadmill, rowing or step board exercises are calorie expending exercises for obese people. 4. Do exercises which challenge the stability component as well. Such exercises will burn more calories instantly i.e. include power movements or functional training in your workouts. 5. Start with high volume exercise so that your hormonal systems are ready to peak at the right time to give you better results. 6. Adding circuit training once a week is good enough to gain faster results and to challenge the cardiovascular and
Few Must-do Exercises for Weight Loss The following exercises target the large muscle groups. When exercised at higher intensities, the muscle size progressively increases. The processes required for increasing the muscle size consume a lot of energy. This hypertrophied muscle will further require more energy to sustain. All this energy is taken from the stored body fat and thus fat loss takes place. 1. Squats - Stand with a stance slightly wider than the shoulders, with your hands pointing forward. Fill your chest with fresh air and with a proper lower back arch, sit back as if sitting on an imaginary chair. Go down till your thighs are parallel to the floor. From this point, push yourself up by using your thigh and hip muscles. See to it that your knees don’t travel ahead of your toes at any point and the back arch does not round at any point of the exercise. Use a barbell, held over your contracted collar muscle, if you require extra weights. 2. Lunges - Stand with a stance slightly wider than the shoulders. Take one foot a step ahead and stand in this position. Take a deep breath and fill your chest. Maintaining a proper back arch, descend down, shifting your body weight on the front leg. Go down till the front thigh is parallel to the floor. From this position, come up straightening your front leg and simultaneously breathing out. Use a barbell, held over your contracted collar muscle, if you require extra weights. 3. Overhead shoulder press – Stand holding a pair of dumbbells overhead and take a deep breath keeping your chest out and lower back arched. Slowly bring the dumbbells down to the side of your ears by bending at your elbows. As soon as your elbows are in line with the shoulders, push the dumbbells up with full effort and breathe out to reach the . start position

Signature Kundalini
Back Massage
T
he moment you step into the Natural Elements Spa at The LeMeridien Hotel you are overwhelmed by the hospitality and the warmth of the ambiance. I was greeted by Voleth, the therapist, with a warm smile before she escorted me to the relaxing lounge. Voleth specializes in the Kundalini back massage by ILA. The calmness and the serene sound of water in the background took away the stresses of the week as I sunk further into the comfort of the recliner and lost myself in the thought of indulging in the renowned Kundalini massage that I was about to experience. Voleth offered me a refreshing ginger, lime and honey tea, before she began the Foot ritual. She placed a huge brass bowl full of water and rose petals and scrubbed my feet with a special Himalayan Salt Scrub by ILA. A sense of tranquility overcame me as my fatigue slipped away. After filling in a form about my general health, Voleth lead me to the therapy
room while explaining to me a bit about the Kundalini Back Massage. Kundalini is a name of the energy that travels up the spine..It is the awakening and the rising of energy from the spine through energy centers with the alteration and the expansion of consciousness. This is an incredibly powerful heat storehouse of psychic energy, sometimes called Shakti, symbolized as a coiled, sleeping serpent at the base of the spine (“Kundal” means ‘curl’). Once awakened it uncoils and ascends through the spinal column to the top of the head, and triggers a transcendent spiritual state. A repeated experience generates enlightenment. This treatment helps to balance the whole nervous system and chakras due to the synergistic use of essential oils, and ancient massage techniques
and empirically developed massage techniques and uses the Kundalini Energy to heal deep parts of energy blocks caused by stress and past traumas that are stored in the deeper tissue of the body. To best facilitate healing, the practitioner works with the intention of positively affecting health and well being. The 60 minutes of this exotic massage flew by as I indulged in ultimate bliss. I was then gently awakened by Voleth who informed me that my treatment was over.
The room was bathed in a golden hue and the perfect resonance of the Gayatri Mantra added to my sense of tranquility. After asking me to rest on the soft massage bed, Voleth started the Kundalini Massage treatment with Ila oil
Time of Treatment: 60 Minutes

Foods That
Fight Fat!
If you’re on a weight loss diet program, don’t shun food. Instead, switch over to these fat busting foods that actually assist your slimming down program. Mumbai-based nutritionist Naini
Nutritionist Naini Setalvad picks magical foods that will help you shed the bulk in this New Year.
Leafy greens
Lemons Packed with vitamin C - which helps fat metabolism - lemons also help prevent constipation and regulate digestion. Vitamin C also helps in the absorption of iron. People suffering from iron deficiency tend to feel tired and sluggish and reach for sugary, high calorie snacks. Instead, squeeze some lemon juice onto your salads to help squeeze the fat out of your cells!
Spinach, methi, mustard leaves, rocket lettuce and other dark green lettuces are extremely low calorie and high in fiber, folic acid and iron. All these help keep your energy levels high and sugars stable, so that you don’t binge or get unnecessary cravings. One cup of leafy greens has only 20 calories, so when you fill up on them, you end up eating less of the higher calorie foods and still get a large volume of food.
Tomatoes, cucumber, white and yellow pumpkin These veggies are low in calories (one cup of chopped veggies is barely 20 calories, whereas one cup of rice is 200!) and high in fiber, so they keep you full for long. Fiber takes longer to digest, so the body has to work hard (think burning calories!) to break down the food. They also provide a healthy dose of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants to help regulate metabolism and energy levels.
42 TeleLIFE
Chillies, cinnamon and cloves Spices like chillies, cinnamon and cloves increase the body temperature; and this heat results in a small increase in the body’s metabolism or calorie expenditure (hey, every calorie counts!). Chillies also banish sweet cravings while cinnamon, being naturally sweet, prevents those chocolate raids!
Olive oil Full of heart healthy monounsaturated fats, olive oil curbs the appetite and provides a feeling of satiety. Studies show that people who smear their bread with butter eat more during the meal, compared with people who eat bread the Italian way - with olive oil. But remember, a little goes a long way. So two tsp a day would suffice as it still contains the same number of calories as other oils!
Low fat yoghurt
Kiwis
Almonds
Low fat dairy is packed with calcium, protein, zinc, potassium and other minerals essential for a healthy, balanced body. Low fat yoghurt seems to speed up fat burning better than other high calcium, non dairy foods. But make sure you eat the low fat or fat free kind since whole milk dairy products are not only high in fat and calories, but have bad cholesterol too.
Kiwis are packed with natural sugar and fiber that help you feel more energetic while maintaining your sugar levels, so you won’t feel like binging. Kiwis in particular seem to aid fat loss probably due to their high vitamin C content which aids in fat metabolism. They also have a low glycemic index, which is ideal for diabetics.
Though almonds are high in fat, it’s the good monounsaturated variety which is essential for a healthy heart; coupled with protein and fiber. This keeps you full and satiated for longer than other snacky items like chips and biscuits. Studies have even found that almonds help suppress the appetite and prevent binging. Limit yourself to about 16-20 a day as a healthy substitute to your post lunch snack.
Coconut oil
Eggs
Whole grains
Good fat is absolutely necessary for good weight loss as the brain is made of fat, and it’s your brain that signals you to stop eating. Have about four tsp a day of monounsaturated fat, one of saturated fat and one of polyunsaturated fat from mixed seeds like pumpkin, sesame and sunflower. Coconut oil restores thyroid functioning, relieving hypothyroidism, and actually increases the metabolic rate leading to weight loss. An easy way to consume it – simply sprinkle raw coconut on your food.
A great source of quality protein, zinc and other essential minerals, studies have found that people who eat an egg for breakfast (yolk included), land up eating less at lunch compared to those who eat the same number of calories for breakfast but no egg. The egg white is low in calories and high in protein, so if you don’t want the fatty yolk, make an omelet of the whites instead. The quality protein in eggs also helps muscle repair and recovery, essential for speedy metabolism.
Jowar, nachni, bajra, barley, whole wheat, oats and brown rice are all packed with vitamin B, fiber and complex carbohydrates which help keep your sugars stable and prevent uncontrollable hunger pangs. Swapping whole grains for refined ones will result in increasing your body’s metabolism - since the body has to work harder to digest these grains compared to refined ones. Plus you will feel full for longer and end up eating fewer calories overall.
Pulses and legumes These are great sources of essential B vitamins, a lack of which tends to lead to binging and cravings. They are also lower in calories per serving compared to red meat which is also packed with unhealthy saturated fat. They also come with a healthy dose of fiber to keep you full and are loaded with easy to digest proteins, essential for regulating metabolism. Low in glycemic index, they keep you full for a longer time.

fit perfect
Well-heeled women of the Mumbai social circuit, who are admired for their beautiful bodies, tell TeleLIFE how they remain…
Fabulously
Fit!
Fit bit: For me, every day is a different day as I often catch up with a friend for lunch or go out for dinner. Since I travel a lot, there’s no point following any particular diet or plan. But I believe the keyword is ‘balance’. So if I’ve eaten a heavy lunch or binged in the morning, I try to eat a light dinner. And if I’ve been binging for a couple of days, I try to eat right the next few days. Starting off the day: I make it a point to begin my day with a thick fruit pulp and a boiled egg. It gives me my dose of vitamins and minerals. The meal deal: I really love salad and pack in salad with every meal. And if I’m ever eating alone, I order just a salad for myself. What I try to avoid is eating carbs in the evening… but with chicken, dal, vegetables, sprouts and salad in my plate, there’s really plenty to eat.
Queenie Singh, Jewellery Designer
Sinful indulgences: I never resist temptation - in fact, I’m a dangerous devil when it comes to temptation… I enjoy my steak and my cup of ice cream. And I never feel bad about having binged as I believe that one must never complain about what one has enjoyed. Treadmill talk: I’m very disciplined about my work out and do a 40-minute routine of either yoga or Pilates at least four days a week. My routine of Pilates involves exercises and breathing techniques. One must have a strong back and toned abs. Even if you have broad hips, you can still look good if your abs are flat. On the other hand, even if you’re skinny with a little paunch, you’ll look bad. Fitness mantra: I’m really driven towards achieving fitness as I respect my body. I don’t spend too much time delving on exercise and diets, but when I’m exercising, I do it with dedication and focus. ___________________________________________________

Fit bit: Fitness to me is a holistic experience which includes diet, exercise and lifestyle. Realization dawned on me when I was 15 years old and weighed 80 kgs! Since then I’m very happy to say that I’ve had the same weight for the past 22 years. Treadmill talk: I run for one hour at Priyadarshini Park (I’m very lucky to be living opposite such a lovely park!) from 7.30 to 8.30 every morning five times a week. After that, it’s power yoga with my personal trainer Samantha (she’s excellent!!), or weight training twice a week. Saturdays and Sundays are my days off! Starting off the day: I’m up at 6.30 a.m. and start off with some warm water and lime juice. After my run, I have nariyal pani and then a banana. I also have vegetable juice in the morning with wheat grass in it – food for the skin. I drink four litres of water daily. The meal deal: By lunch, I’m really hungry as I don’t eat much in the morning.
Nisha Jhaveri, Wellness Specialist So lunch is the heaviest meal of my day – packed with vegetables, chapati, yoghurt, dal and rice. In the afternoon, I snack on a fruit or a sandwich or some yoghurt. Dinner is early, which winds up by 7 p.m., as I’m in bed by 10.30 p.m. Sinful indulgences: I like to shock my body sometimes, so when I’m travelling, I don’t follow any routine and indulge a little more. Being a big chocoholic, I give in to chocolate cravings occasionally. My fitness mantra: I believe that more than the body, workouts keep the mind strong, disciplined and focused. When I lost both my parents a few years ago, it was a very stressful phase for me. Even managing a business and child has its share of stress, but it’s my workouts that keep the stress at bay! _________________________________
Nawaz Modi Singhania, Fitness expert Fit bit: I got involved in fitness 20 years ago when I started my fitness centre ‘Body Art’. It’s something I started because I wanted to keep myself fit, and there were hardly any fitness centres around besides Talwalkars. The space to open a centre was available to me, and I was also creatively inclined. Moreover, I didn’t want to get into law, despite being a qualified lawyer. Treadmill talk: I only work out when I am taking classes at my fitness centres. I’ve been teaching for over 20 years now. I usually teach five times a week, though our centre is open all seven days a week. What works best is a cross training programme - a rotation between different exercise routines ranging from box-aerobics, hi-low fusions, step, Pilates (mat and equipment-based) and gyrotonics to name a few. The reason is that if you follow just one routine, your body gets used to it and your muscles
don’t respond to the routine anymore. Through the classes, I get my share of both cardio and resistance training. The meal deal: I basically follow the same rules that I advocate at my fitness centre. I eat a lot of fruits in the morning. I restrict carbs to healthy carbs such as fruits and vegetables and if it’s rice, then it will be brown rice. Lunch, these days, is at 2 p.m., as that’s when my daughter returns from school. Also, I eat to the extent that I’m satisfied, but not stuffed! Sinful indulgences: My only real weakness is chocolates and I have a HUGE problem trying to control it. But where an overdose of chocolates may not be good for the body, it’s good for the soul, so that’s fine on the odd occasion! I make up for it subsequently, to balance things out. My Fitness Secret: I’m not a fitness fanatic; in fact that word itself scares me. I’m very balanced in my approach to whatever I do. Fitness to me is not an end in itself. It’s a means to an end - that is a vehicle to enjoy one’s life and live it to . the fullest.
