Ironical words from Hrithik Roshan, who has not only just rendered 2012’s superhit Agneepath but has also spectacularly redefined a role that is an Amitabh Bachchan classic! And to think he almost said no to it!
“I’m
not a
Good
Actor!”
S
o, does he feel pressurised to send the box office cash registers ringing like Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan? Hrithik says no. He’s only on a journey to discover his extreme potential. He does not want to survive the competition, he only wants to ‘thrive’. And along the way if he makes a few hundred crores, he’s not going to complain!
Wasn’t Agneepath a film to which you almost said, “No”? I was not inclined to do a remake at all, especially not of something that’s regarded as a classic. And to attempt
6
TeleLIFE
to reprise a role that has been done by Mr. Bachchan that has gone down in history as one of his best. Why should I dig my own grave? But when I heard the narration of the film, I was completely blown away and I said, here is a good film and why should I not be in it? Sanjay Dutt said during Mission Kashmir you were nervous but today you’ve grown to be a fine actor... Yeah, I think I was. I still am. Maybe, I’ve just learned to hide it better now. Aren’t you an actor who gets consumed by the character you play? I’m not a good actor. I need to get consumed and be that person. That’s
the only way I can get my dialogues out. Otherwise as Hrithik, I really can’t.
Today, Shah Rukh, Salman and Aamir Khan command massive box office pull. Their films have repeatedly turned out to be Rs 100 crore grossers. Do you as a top, leading actor feel the pressure to measure up? No. The pressure is to always push the bar, regardless of who’s doing what. The pressure is to constantly discover my extreme potential. The only way I can do that is through the challenges I accept in my life. Competition is great, if it’s seen in a healthy manner and it pushes you to excel. It’s a great spirit.
grow, I would never evolve, I would never get to the point where I want to get to. I would never enjoy the present moment. You have to accept the way the universe is meant to be. You cannot resist it. To resist it is the most unintelligent thing. What was your first thought when you spotted that first grey strand of hair? I would enjoy it. I would enjoy it and say, ‘Oh, there.’ I look forward to every chapter of my life. But looks are important in your profession and there is premium attached to youth... No, no. You have to straddle time and ride it like a horse. If you let it get ahead of you, or if you step back and say I don’t want to grow, it’s still going to go that way and you’ll be left behind. Time has to be your slave, you should not be a slave to time. People misinterpret growing. I even look forward to death. It’s not a negative thought. It can empower you if you see it the right way. If you are fearless, and you know that ‘I am here to do my duty, I am here to enjoy this ride that I have chosen to take, my premise is that this is all by choice’. You did a cameo in Don 2 recently. Considering Farhan Akhtar had initially wanted to cast you in Don, life’s come a full circle for you… Yeah, I finally got to play Don.
COMPETITION IS GREAT, IF IT’S SEEN IN A HEALTHY MANNER AND IT PUSHES YOU TO EXCEL. IT’S A GREAT SPIRIT. But it should not be limited. I look at life beyond competition. For instance, if the competition had to fail, if everybody’s film came down to doing 60 crores, I would not then strive for 70 crores. I would still strive for 200 crores, regardless of the competition because I’m on a journey to discover my extreme potential.
You recently celebrated your 38th birthday. When you were inching towards 30, did you say, ‘God, I’m turning 30!? And now, ‘Oh my God, I’m going to be 40!’? No, not really. Superficially, I might react to it, but internally, I’m very comfortable with time and the passing of time. Because if time didn’t pass, I would never
So, Farhan might just cast you in Don 3? No, I don’t think so. There is only one Don and only one Krrish. SRK and Gauri are known as the first couple of Bollywood. They also endorse products together. Do you see yourself and Sussanne endorsing products together? That’s something that will have to be analysed at the time when there is an offer of that kind. I don’t know how I would react. But I won’t say no, I would need to understand it more ’coz there are so many variables attached to it. Are you a bike guy or a car guy? Neither, actually. I’m a foot guy. I love

Mine is usually sci-fi or an action film or a very serious or emotional film. A lot has been said about your faceoff with Salman Khan. But now you are back to being friends with him... Ae yaar, one second. This is something that cropped up in one newspaper and then discussed by another and then gone back to a third newspaper which had its own point of view. Between Salman and myself, there have been no such issues and I don’t feel the need to get into… It’s never been an issue at all. Recently, there was some Bigg Boss issue that was spoken of by the press. It’s never been anything that’s occurred between Salman and me. I never met him at the airport. The last I met him was at his house when he was preparing to go for his surgery. Isn’t that like obvious? That makes things very clear. Salman and Shah Rukh are warring and don’t talk with each other. How difficult is it for you to be friends with two people who are on the opposite sides? I’ve warred also. I have had fights, but all in school. I’m grown up now. I don’t think I’ve had a fight with anybody, alive or dead since I passed out of college. I don’t feel the need to. I don’t understand why that happens.
walking, I love running, I love sprinting. I love being on the move. I love working out on the beach. But walking on the roads would be impossible with your star status... I run every day on the beach or on the roads. I’m running all the time. No bodyguards… It’s just me and my trainer. Doesn’t it get annoying with people hounding you? They just can’t keep up. Any other sports activities you like doing? Zilch. Everything is for my films. Whatever I learn, whatever I do will somewhere indirectly be for my movies.

TeleLIFE
What’s a typical day in the life of Hrithik Roshan like? Early morning gym, 7.30 am, running on the beach. Even on your day off you’d look forward to that? I look forward to my off days because I can do that without any pressure of time. Spending time with my kids at home, just cleaning things. Reorganising my desk, watching a movie with Sussanne and the kids. Spending some fight time with my two boys. Would there be any kind of debate on what kind of films Sussane and you should watch? We take turns. There’s one time when it’s Sussanne and the next time will be my choice. Her’s is usually romantic comedy.
Who are your 4 am friends in the industry? Sussanne comes first. Obviously, I’ll bring her up first. Apart from that, there’s Uday Chopra, there’s Prashant Issar, he’s an ad filmmaker. Yeah, I guess these two. Are you in touch with Barbara Mori? Yeah, of course I am still in touch. Are there plans of doing more films with her? No, sometimes, there’s this faint hope that maybe we’ll get to do another film with each other. She misses the (Indian) food. She was one of the most amazing co-stars that I’ve worked with. Are you motivated by money or accolades? Both to a certain extent and neither in other ways. What truly drives my core is just my desire to stay inspired because
I HAVE JUST ASKED A LOT OF QUESTIONS TO MYSELF AND HAVE HAD LIFE ANSWER THEM FROM TIME TO TIME. I DON’T LIKE TO REPEAT THE SAME MISTAKES. otherwise you don’t have a challenge… I think 35 years is enough to understand what life is about. If post-35 you are not happy, then you are either stupid or just plain unintelligent. After 35, you’ve got to understand what is what. I’m a very aware person. I am very aware of my motives, reasons, cause and effect of human behaviour, which is why I never have any misunderstandings with people because I understand myself. You come across as peaceful, content man, almost like having no mean bone in your body. It seems as if Hrithik Roshan has just come out of an Art of Living course… No, I haven’t done the Art of Living course. I have just asked a lot of questions to myself and have had life answer them from time to time. I don’t like to repeat the same mistakes.
No, I would spoil it. I don’t have the talent to do that. What do you think of actors who are part of such comedies? I have immense respect. To understand your forte and then explore it to the best possible is a great thing. What emotion can you relate to when playing a character on screen? The underdog. Which Bollywood actor can give you stiff competition on the dance floor? Most of them. Ranbir (Kapoor) and Shahid (Kapoor) and Ranveer (Singh). All three of them are fantastic.
After Dhoom 2, you haven’t played a baddie. What is the advantage of playing negative roles? It’s not an advantage. It’s contrast. Keeping things alive by doing different things is exciting. I’m always bouncing off from one extreme towards the other. Your kids are mamma’s boys or daddy’s darlings? Right now, they are mamma’s boys because I don’t have enough play time. When I do take them out, I take over them completely. And then I won’t care. What title would you give your autobiography? You know I took six months to get a fix on a name for my first born. For an autobiography, I would be spending the next 15 years to pen down the title. Basically, I’m constantly a ‘work in progress’ person. I’m undefinable. Maybe something like that it would be. So when will you write your book? I don’t know. Maybe I’ll surprise everyone.
In the future, where do you see yourself – as Sunny Deol, who has not been able to keep up with the times or as Amitabh Bachchan, who has defied time? I always see myself striving for the better. No matter what. Is there a film you’d like to do for your kids? Well, I’m doing Krrish 3. Can’t better that! Kangna Ranaut has said on screen, she would like to be Anarkali and you would make for the perfect Salim… I don’t know if I’d make the perfect anything but Kangna is a lovely girl and a fantastic person. I’ve worked with her as an actor and as an assistant as well on Krrish 3 sets. If offered masala films like Ready, Welcome or Thank You, do you see yourself fitting into the scheme of things?

in profile Much has been written about Priyanka Gandhi’s husband and Sonia Gandhi’s son-in-law, Robert Vadra, but no one can claim to know the real man. Despite facing the danger of getting overshadowed by such strong political figures, Robert has always stood his own ground and has emerged as a complete man.
Marrying
into Politics
W
ith the dust settling around his so-called controversial motorbike rally, where he allegedly made his intention of joining politics known, Robert Vadra is busy planning his next business meeting. His calm demeanour shows that it is an accepted way of living. Over the years, Robert Vadra has evolved from being a mere spectator to a participant in the process of politics. There is no denying that it has happened because of the family he is married into and he has come to accept that fact.
10 TeleLIFE
SELFBELIEF IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT. AND, I AM LUCKY TO HAVE BEEN INSTILLED WITH THE RIGHT VALUES. It has, therefore, become part of his daily life when he gets to hear something or the other (not always flattering) about himself. He doesn’t get perturbed by the negative comments that keep coming his way. Not anymore. Says his friend Sanjeev Laroia, “I’ve seen success and fame taking its toll on people; they usually give in to the good life, become complacent and the slide begins; But not Robert. Anyone who knows him well would concur that fame, if at all, was just an event. Rather than basking in its glory, he turned it into a catalyst towards an amazing journey of transformation and self improvement. On the personal front, he worked very hard on his fitness, appearance and conduct. At the same time, on the work front, he continued to explore new avenues and invested time, effort and energy in learning new skills...before he pursued them.” Not that it was easy for a regular businessman to adapt to living under scrutiny 24/7. “My 15 years of marriage began with no understanding of the life that was to follow. Slowly and gradually, I have learnt how to deal with the
constant pressure. But I believe that one needs to be happy in one’s own skin. You can’t please everyone. Exposure is very important. When sometimes my children, Raihan and Miraya, have had a rough day with their peers at school, I point out to them that it was just one kid or two that were against you. There are always positive and negative sides in life and you must focus on the positives as we cannot have everybody’s acceptance. Self-belief is extremely important. And, I am lucky to have been instilled with the right values,” says Vadra. Maybe, that explains how Robert Vadra has managed to retain his identity in spite of being married to the daughter of a family that is larger than life for all Indians. Says Suhel Seth, “I believe Robert Vadra has shown great dignity in not responding to wild allegations and to be fair, has been more understated than most other sons-in-law. Ranjan Bhattacharya, Vajpayee’s son-in-law, was and did influence policy and postings. No one can accuse Vadra of that. There is no doubt that he will remain a soft target, but the reality is, he is also confident in his own skin so that helps as well.”
His friends believe that it is not easy to have a very grounded outlook in such circumstances, but Vadra somehow manages to do that. “My family is in politics and I am a businessman. We deal with our issues in our own way. I like to lead a simple life.” His friend Rajeev Khanna has observed that Robert never throws his weight around (despite being married into the Gandhi family). “He has deep respect for his wife and brother-in-law’s efforts in the complicated political climate. I wish Rob all the very best as a person,” he says and adds, “He will always risk pushing the limits to find out how far he can actually go in life.” Born in Moradabad UP, Vadra joined his father’s business at an early age, travelling neighbouring towns for sourcing raw material and grew up seeing the family business evolve, understanding the needs of the business. From engaging with the workers to interacting with the biggest buyers in the industry, he has done it all the hard way. He started his own business when he was just 24 years of age. People in the same trade as Vadra say that Robert Vadra would take samples to people’s shops and trade fairs. As Vadra says, “It was tough to do something on your own. But, I don’t believe in giving up, so I persevered. Also, the experience helped me a lot to learn about my own strengths.” Suhel Seth has the last word when it comes to defining Robert’s passion for
11 TeleLIFE
his work. “To my mind, he has created a niche legitimate space for himself in the world of business which too is a far cry from other political family members,” he opines. Style and Robert have always been synonymous. Vadra was recently awarded as the Most Stylish Man (people’s choice) by HT City, the coloured supplement of the Hindustan Times. Says Vadra’s friend of 25 years, fashion designer, Ashish Soni, “Right from school days, Robert has always had a fearless sense of style, which was quirky in his teens. He’s come into his own now and manages to mix the young and trendy with the sharp and sophisticated to create his unique style. He’s one of the most stylish men I know. With his fantastic diet and fitness regime, he still fits into the clothes I made for his wedding,” says Ashish. “Fitness is a passion. My Facebook page has a fitness tip for everyone, but in a fun way. Exercising for me is relaxing. I like to push myself. If a friend says that’s it and that he can’t do more, I always tell him that the mantra is, ‘Don’t give up,’” smiles Robert proudly. Rajeev Khanna, known as a bike enthusiast, was also drawn into friendship with Vadra because of his passion for the outdoors. “I first met Rob (as I call him) around 10 years ago at a golf course in Delhi. He came across to me as a simple and humble human being with great positive energy. He is extremely fond of the outdoors with wide ranging interests which include bikes, cars, scuba diving, cycling, golf, a drive towards physical fitness, and most importantly, a passion for life.” His passion for life has been appreciated, but what about his ambition in life? Vadra says that his ambition is to do better than last year. “I strive to get better and better in every aspect of my life. One day, I would like to write a book on fitness and the experiences of my life.” Huh? But, what about statements like, ‘I could win from anywhere’ that he recently made while campaigning in UP? He is ready with an answer. “That sounded so arrogant. That’s definitely not what I am. After so many years in my
12 TeleLIFE
“FITNESS IS A PASSION. MY FACEBOOK PAGE HAS A FITNESS TIP FOR EVERYONE, BUT IN A FUN WAY. EXERCISING FOR ME IS RELAXING. I LIKE TO PUSH MYSELF.” family business, I was asked if I were to take over, how and what I would do. And, I replied I will surely take it ahead to new levels and make it a success. This was also said with the same thought. After many years of visiting the constituencies and campaigning with my wife’s family, when I was asked if I would win an election if I decided to contest, my answer was surely, a yes. Why would you think I would undermine myself and say, ‘ No, I will lose?’ If you understand the needs of the people and feel you can make a difference then I think anyone would answer the way I did. My point was that, yes, I can bring a change with or without contesting.” There is no clear answer as yet on whether or not he will join politics. Says Robert Vadra, “I am open to it as any other person in our country is.
But, no matter how I put it, it is always misconstrued. If I categorically say, ‘no’, it won’t be right because it would seem that I am averse to something that my family is involved in and if I say, ‘yes’, then it is seen as misplaced aspiration. As far as I am concerned, I haven’t made any decision as yet. When I feel I can make a difference, when there is a calling then I will probably lean towards politics.” Robert Vadra is known among his friends as one who likes to stay focused and keep things simple. “I like to do one thing at a time.” Agrees Manoj Arora who has been working with Vadra for many years, “Mr Vadra has an amazing capability of switching from one aspect to another. He always bounces back to where he belongs.” Concludes Robert Vadra, “All I would like to say is that the future is bright.”

Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor talks about her life with husband Shashi Tharoor, the IPL controversy and her past...
LOVIN’
Shashi
Tharoor! T
he gorgeous Sunanda Pushkar Tharoor has always been in the news for the wrong reasons. If you recall, she is the first-time MP from Thiruvananthapuram, Shashi Tharoor, renounced his ministerial berth for, after a row over Sunanda holding a sweat-equity in the Kochi IPL franchise. But that’s all water under the bridge… After her marriage to the debonair Shashi Tharoor, Sunanda has slowly hit the Delhi social circles in a big way. Today, the celebrated couple resides at Delhi’s elite 97 Lodhi Estate right opposite the Indian Habitat Centre – the perfect address to be a part of the Capital’s crème de la crème. LIVIN’WITH & LOVIN’ SHASHI THAROOR Dressed in natty jeans, shirt and high leather boots, with a poncho thrown over her shirt, Sunanda comes across as an amiable person. Just the mention of
14 TeleLIFE
her husband’s name brings a twinkle to her eyes. Blushing charmingly, Sunanda admits that their love is still palpable and the fair Kashmiri beauty insists, “Each day with Shashi seems like a new day for me, and I’m lovin’ it. This one year has restored my faith in the institution of marriage.” When Sunanda married Shashi in August 2010, it raised a lot of eyebrows, but it looks like the third marriage for both of them has resulted in a successful bond. We ask her whether too much travelling stresses her out. Pat comes the reply, “I enjoy being with Shashi. I love seeing him speak at lectures, launches, seminars et al. Yes, life is hectic with Shashi. But otherwise, I am a complete home bird.” She adds, “I have not been focusing on the professional front for a year because I’ve been concentrating more on being a wife and juggling being a long distance mother.”
And how does she cope with the attention her handsome husband gets? “Women do gush over him, but not in an obscene way. Often women ask me if I feel insecure having a good-looking husband. I always reply that I feel secure in my skin and both of us are very secure about each other, so there’s no question of being insecure,” says Sunanda. Marriage with Shashi has brought about a lot of changes in Sunanda’s lifestyle. “I haven’t changed as a person but the biggest change in my life is wearing traditional attire - saris and salwar kameezes. I have always loved my western wear - jeans, trousers and
skirts. But today, I wear traditional clothes because Shashi likes it. He hates me in jeans.” smiles Sunanda. Nostalgically, she reminisces, “I never behaved like a girl when I was young. I was a tomboy as I grew up with boys. People used to mistake me for a boy.” Incidentally, Sunanda was recently voted by a magazine as being one of the most stylish women in the country. Says she, “I don’t think I am stylish. I just go with the flow of the moment. I don’t follow trends blindly. At a recent event, I wore boots, a sari and an Armani jacket; I got so many compliments! I am not diet conscious. I hog like a pig, I eat 40 times in a day. I believe my beauty secrets come from my mother. I can say I have good DNA.” IPL & MORE… What about the IPL controversy? Sunanda insists it doesn’t agonize her at all. She sets the record straight with, “I believe Lalit Modi was jealous of Shashi. He just wanted to get the whole issue out of context, wherever Shashi was concerned. All Shashi was trying to do was get his own IPL team from Kerala and I was getting Dubai entrepreneurs to invest money in it. It was a misconception that was purposely placed. There was never any sweat-equity or 70 crores as stated. You can easily see it now that the Kochi team is there.” She adds, “In view of my extensive international experience as a business executive, marketing manager and entrepreneur, I was invited to assist Rendezvous Sports World particularly in the areas of fund-raising, networking, event management and brand building. Because this was a start-up, I was told that in lieu of a salary, they would grant me minor equity in Rendezvous in return for my efforts, which is a common practice across the world for start-ups and projects of this nature. “But those were very tough days indeed. Just when everything around us was going wrong, I also lost my mother who passed away just after the IPL issue. She was really upset with my name being ridiculed endlessly. But what made us sail through was Shashi’s and my love for each other. Being a spiritual person also helped me a lot. Even today, when I think

about it, I feel sad. But speaking to my husband, who’s so wonderfully romantic, perks me up immediately!” BEING MALIGNED “Many people confessed later that they misunderstood me during the IPL controversy. But the way the media projected my image was disheartening. Earlier, I believed a lot in the media. But when I started seeing false news about me, I lost faith in newspapers and TV channels. Media today is all about TRPs, they don’t cross-examine facts about the person. This is the reason Shashi gets upset easily with journalists,” says Sunanda, who is often considered a rebel. But she disagrees, stating, “I am not a rebel. I have always done things in my life that I wanted to do. I am outspoken, which people call big-mouthed. I am what I say I am. I take people at face value. If somebody says anything behind my back, it doesn’t matter to me. But I will not say anything behind anybody’s back.”
Clearing the air about the reports in the media about her professional background, Sunanda says, “It’s very sad; if you are young and slightly goodlooking, people consider you dumb. In India, people easily typecast you. I was always into the real estate business. I never had a spa center nor was I a beautician. I have done a lot of different things professionally. I organised charity events, I was a facilitator with the Indian Emotional Intelligence in the US. I also had a HR firm, where we used to hire engineers from India for the US. When 9/11 happened, I entered the real estate business and worked with the Dubai government. Property is one business where you can continue from where you
left off. I still love making deals. There is absolutely nothing wrong in making money, provided you do it with hard work and intelligence.” POLITICAL LEARNING? We ask her whether she’ll ever join politics… Sunanda avers, “I am not interested in learning this kind of politics from Shashi. Maybe later, if I do enter politics, I would do something for Kashmir. I am Kashmiri; for me Kashmir is of paramount importance. I want Indians and the rest of the world to handle Kashmir in a better way.” ALL FOR A CAUSE What keeps her happy is her inclination
“I AM NOT A REBEL. I HAVE ALWAYS DONE THINGS IN MY LIFE THAT I WANTED TO DO. I AM OUTSPOKEN, WHICH PEOPLE CALL BIGMOUTHED. I AM WHAT I SAY I AM. I TAKE PEOPLE AT FACE VALUE. towards spirituality and her philanthropic initiatives. “I am a spiritually inclined person. I feel that God has put me in a position where I can influence people. From next year, I will dedicate my time to the cause of women amenities. It’s very sad that I don’t have a daughter and not even a sister. But I care a lot about the girl child.” Talking about her recent venture of e-toilets, she says, “We are bringing in a European concept where not only the toilets, but the floors also get cleaned automatically. We are planning to put up 100 toilets each in Kerala, Kolkata and Kashmir through the Chandran Tharoor Foundation. I want to deal with the issue of sanitation with seriousness.” She adds, “I believe Shashi when he says that when you educate a girl, you educate a family. But when you educate a boy, you just educate a boy.” Here’s a couple whose hearts not only beat for each other, but also for similar passions in life… And that’s what makes this beautiful power couple tick!

CIRCUIT BLESSINGS FROM THE ENEMY CAMP

fter Rahul baba’s aggressive campaigns in Uttar Pradesh went completely kaput, what with Samajwadi Party’s (SP) stupendous victory, instantly all the attention has shifted to the latest yuva neta, Akhilesh Yadav, who successfully scripted this win. Reportedly, during the election campaigns in UP, all wasn’t well between the Congress and the SP as Akhilesh aggressively took on

Rahul’s highly dramatic act of tearing up a paper which had a list of election promises of his political opponents. Apparently, Akhilesh caustically commented that Rahul may as well jump from the stage now to vent his anger. But now, as the dust has settled in UP, even the party dynamics have drastically changed. This was evident in Delhi recently when the Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi unexpectedly walked across the Parliament’s Central Hall in order to greet SP’s honcho, Mulayam Singh Yadav. To top it all, the young gun, Akhilesh, who had taken the Congress head on, was surprisingly seen reciprocating Sonia’s gesture by touching her feet to take her blessings. We guess, now ‘all is well’ between the SP and the Congress, thanks to the numbers game. Politicians sure make for strange bedfellows.

We agree that it is not rare for a starlet to be seen at such places, but can someone please tell us what Jiah Khan’s agenda is? No endorsements, no movies but just photo-ops seem to be her flavour lately. Well, all that is okay to keep the audience remember her for a while but our word of wisdom would be to bag a good project to back up these appearances. The same smile in every picture can get pretty boring after a while.

elhi had drama queen Rakhi Sawant prancing in the Parliament recently. The ministers expected a feast for their eyes, but unfortunately, she was fully clad in parliamentary uniform—a white salwar-kameez. Famously infamous for her desperate publicity generating antics, controversy czarina, Rakhi Sawant, left no stone unturned in promoting herself. Reportedly, Rakhi’s intention for the visit was simply to meet the Congress President Sonia Gandhi and convey her message to come out with a fair budget. That’s surprisingly a wannabe-intellectual attempt coming from her. She warmly greeted SP’s Mulayam Singh Yadav, RJD’s Lalu Yadav and other leaders. Having earlier expressed her fondness for Rahul Gandhi, during this visit, she is said to have praised the Finance Minister, Pranab Mukerjee, saying he would make a good budget. The highly dramatic item girl reportedly stressed that even though she had come uninvited, she wasn’t there for any film promotion, but was in fact interested in seeing the Parliament and how it functions. We shudder to think if politics is next on Rakhi’s agenda.

HEROGIRI FOR SONAM AND RHEA KAPOOR
WAY TO GO RAHUL DRAVID!

T
he fashionforward Kapoor sisters of Bollywood, Sonam and Rhea, have sniffed a movie opportunity in Mainak Dhar’s book Herogiri. The book is about a working class hero with superpowers. The author is a Bangkok-based IIM grad and Head of Marketing, Procter and Gamble, ASEAN. Dhar says the Anil Kapoor Film Company evinced interest in his book a few months after it was published in 2010. Funnily enough, in the novel, Dhar describes a Bollywood film being made on the life of the superhero, Arnab Bannerjee. The IIM grad says he’s personally not a fan of the IIT/IIM author tag simply because it’s usually used as a convenient
publicity gimmick. “I am 38 years old, and what I am as a person and author has been shaped by many experiences and influences, several more important than going to a particular educational institution for a couple of years. I think you have so many writers from such colleges for a simple reason. Being a writer requires a person to be three things—articulate, imaginative, and disciplined. Not surprisingly, such people do pretty well academically, and in the way we have traditionally bought up our kids, the ‘natural’ path for them has been to do engineering or management.” So, is there a formula that the IIMs/IITs teach you, we asked. “I wish there was such a thing, and if there was one, it must have been taught in one of the classes I bunked,” says Dhar.
here may be 1,756,437 reasons why Rahul Dravid is called The Wall and also loved. Here’s one more. At the launch of Abhinav Bindra’s book, A Shot at History, Dravid released the book and was in conversation with Rohit Brijnath, who had also authored the book along with Abhinav Bindra. During the discussion, Brijnath told the audience that Rahul’s pursuit of excellence was a continuous process and recounted a visit to Dravids’ home. His wife, Vijetha Dravid, being a great cook that she is, had cooked up a spread but Rahul only picked at his food. When asked why, he replied that he was in training despite the next match being a few months away. Dravid later added that for him, getting into the zone, a concept that most sports people talk about, meant having a strong work ethic, without the stress of competition. But, lest you took him to be an all-work-andno-play kind of guy, Dravid revealed a humorous side when he said, “Although my wife thinks it’s an escape from reality. I don’t have to worry about the electricity at home.”

While the couple looked ravishing in their splendour, the guest list too had an interesting turn out. From the famous director duo Abbas-Mustan, Sohail Khan to even the usually reclusive Nagesh Kukunoor, were present at the party. What surprised us a tad bit was the fact that although Urvashi couldn’t really make it big in Bollywood, her marriage party was quite a crowd puller as far as the Bollywood crowd was concerned. Now we are left wondering if it was her charm that roped in the guests or her husband’s and his family’s clout.

fter his autobiography, Made in India, Biddu, the ageless composerproducer is back with his first book of fiction, Curse of the Godman. Set in the tea plantations of Darjeeling, Biddu says the idea for the book came to him when he was sitting on a beach in Spain and doing what he does best: nothing. “That’s right, I can just sit for hours and do nothing, but think,’’ says the charming music legend whose songs for Carl Douglas and Tina Charles made him an international sensation in the ’70s. He then went on to introduce disco ditties to India with Nazia Hassan’s Disco Deewane. In his second turn as a writer, Biddu is refreshingly honest when he tells you that he’s not much of a reader. The two books that he has enjoyed reading are Shantaram and The Reluctant Fundamentalist. “I can’t even tell you that my book is like an Agatha Christie novel since I haven’t read any of her books.” He
may not read too many books but one of the first things he does read is the papers in the morning. “I read one Indian news website and one Pakistani website to know what the other side is saying,” he laughs. In the pipeline are two more novels. “Novel No 4 has a very edgy style. It’s about a private eye and is made for an international audience,” says Biddu. With the plot for Curse of the Godman including romance, deceit, mysticism, bigotry and adventure, we ask Biddu if he’s had any offers to convert the book into a film. “I used to write my songs with a video in mind. I’ve written this book like a film script,” he says. And, if the book is made into a movie, we can see him appearing in it, like he did in his music videos.

Can one expect anything less from Ravi and Mina Chawla, owners of Ravissant, one of India’s wealthiest, who have built an empire they should be proud of? However, what is sad to see is that, inspite
the enviable wealth and properties all over the metros, they are in a legal battle with their ex daughter-in-law, Kalyani Chawla, who is apparently fighting for her daughter’s education and some security for her future, which the Chawlas seem to claim they cannot afford. Unfortunately, there has been a contempt of court with the child maintenance settlement, which after Vishal and Kalyani’s divorce in 2006, is reportedly, yet to be settled. According to close sources, Kalyani
claimed zero alimony and asked only for her child’s future to be secure. According to the grapevine, the Chawlas have disinherited their only son Vishal, who was said to have been fighting for his daughter’s rights. There are also some uncomplimentary talks of Vishal’s sisters, who, it is believed, would do everything to keep the wealth amongst themselves and make sure Vishal stays out of the family. We just hope the Chawlas admit to their real status and agree to the child maintenance for the sake of the child, at least.

Tantrum Queen?
By the way, Shahid’s old friend Amrita Rao too seems to be taking a cue from him. Recently, the actress created quite a ruckus at the Lakme Fashion Week, where she was supposed to be the showstopper for designer Rajat Tangri. Turns out, Amrita asked for some changes in the costumes, as she wasn’t happy with Rajat’s designs. Though the designer happily gave in to her demand, there came a point when Amrita’s tantrums became too difficult for him to handle. After a heated argument between the two, Ms. Rao walked out of his show last minute. What’s more, Amrita was overheard telling him, “I can’t be your showstopper, but I can surely sit in the crowd and clap for you.” Hail Bollywood’s new tantrum queen, but Amu dear, shouldn’t your flagging career be your top priority? Think about it.
Saif than sorry Actors generally do anything for publicity – plant stories, manipulate the
media, etc. But Saif Ali Khan prefers to be different. Reason being, he feels that people who talk less are heard more. We agree, Saifoo!
Mr. Popular
Unlike RGV, Rohit Shetty is one B-town director, who’s an absolute delight to work with. Many Bollywood biggies vouch for that. Rohit, who has made out-and-out comedies like the Golmaal series and All The Best and also dished out a successful power-packed action film like Singham, has decided to stick to these two genres only. The director believes that only hardcore masala flicks connect with the masses and he doesn’t want anything more than the audience’s love. Badhiya hai!
Sweet revenge
Imtiaz Ali is still receiving a lot of flak for launching the not-sotalented Nargis Fakhri in Rockstar. And a li’l birdie tells us that the half-British-half-Indian model Masha Pour, who he’d rejected just so that he could cast Nargis, seems to have found the perfect launch for herself. Sajid Nadiadwala has signed on Masha for a film titled Bhouri. To be directed by debutant Jasbir Bhatia, the flick will be based in the rural parts of North India and she’d be playing a village girl. Sources close to Masha tell us that Imtiaz had rejected her for Rockstar because she couldn’t speak Hindi (as if Nargis could!) and so, the model has been taking classes and has now become fluent in the language. There’s no revenge like success, Masha, remember that.

Hollywood Hottie in the make?
Shahid’s rumoured ex-girlfriend Priyanka Chopra continues to have quite an effect on Hollywood hottie Gerard Butler. We hear that the sexy actor has a big crush on her even now and is often heard raving about her smokin’ hot looks at social events. Pssst… He was heard talking about her at the Oscars this year. PC may be out of luck in her professional life but her personal life is certainly rockin’!
Going crazy
At one point in time, Shazahn was also linked to Prateik. But Prateik is now said to be dating British model Amy Jackson. However, the actor doesn’t seem to have given up on his wild ways. Recently, the actor was seen at a party with a bunch of girls. In fact, he was also seen dancing and smoking up with them. Looks like all play and no work makes Prateik a crazy boy!
Hot vibes
The summer is back with a vengeance and it seems to have brought with it quite a few surprises. A certain Mr. Kapoor has become too big for his boots. Apparently, no new brand is ready to sign Shahid Kapoor as their brand ambassador, all thanks to his pricey behaviour. The actor, whose last film, Mausam, was a dud at the boxoffice, is losing out on a lot of endorsements because of his unreasonable demands. But the bigger joke here is that even his managers, who used to step in to negotiate earlier, have stopped bargaining with Sasha because they don’t see a point. Hee haw!
Work overload
Rohit maybe churning out one film after the other and loving it, but Karan Johar definitely doesn’t. The producer-director, who has Student Of The Year, his first directorial venture without Shah Rukh Khan, an untitled project with Ekta Kapoor, Dostana 2 and a few other films in the pipeline, is so busy that it’s taking a toll on his health. But the director is so kicked about his work that he doesn’t want to slow down. Dedication much, KJo?

Love rekindled?
There was a time when there were rumours of a romance brewing between Anushka and Ranbir Kapoor. But that’s a thing of the past and everyone is now hoping that RK Jr. finds love again in his ex-girlfriend, Deepika Padukone, who will be seen opposite him in Ayan Mukerji’s next, Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani. In fact, we hear Ranbir himself thinks that this film with Dippy will be the love story of the generation. We’re not sure if Katrina Kaif, who he has supposedly rekindled his romance with, will be happy hearing this….
Swollen head
By the way, lately Deepika Padukone has also been heard talking at length to people about her fashion mantras. Apparently, the actress thinks she’s one of the most fashionable girls in B-town. Ms. Padukone thinks that she is up to date with the latest trends and that her sense of style is absolutely outstanding. Too bad that you can’t say the same about your acting skills, Dippy!
Delusionary thinking
Now we all know that Shazahn Padamsee is dating Vinod Khanna’s nephew, Akhil Kapoor. Akhil will soon be debuting opposite Govinda’s daughter, Narmmadaa, in the film Tutak Tootak Tutiya. But what you don’t know is that the petite actress is very upset with the media for bringing their affair out in public. The actress, who is barely two films old, doesn’t want to be linked to anybody, at least not to an actor who has not even hit the silver screen, as it may tarnish her image and ruin her glorious career. People and their delusions, we tell you!
Dutt’s the way!
While we’re talking about action, we can’t forget our very own Sanjay Dutt. But Sanju baba has left all the action and the gore strictly for the silver screen. Off-screen, he’s a sweetheart. The large-hearted actor has reportedly gifted a huge flat in the suburbs of Mumbai to one of his spot boys. That’s not all. ‘pungi’ Humming the song ‘Pyar ki Pungi’ on your way to work? You are not the only one! He has hit the jackpot with this song from Agent Vinod that has been topping the music charts of late. Meet NAKASH AZIZ, the boy who sang pungi with Mika Singh in Agent Vinod. How it all began… My career in music started at the age of three with the song, “Papa kehte hain bada naam karega” which I sang in school. I knew who I wanted to become at the age of six, when I heard AR Rahman’s first song CHOTI SI AASHA. My stint with Reality shows… Like all new talent today, I too wanted to get into the film industry and chose to do so through the popular reality television. I tried my luck in both SaReGaMa and Indian Idol. In Indian Idol, although I reached the top 28, I was unfortunately not included in the Top 10. I joined hands with another fellow contestant Sargam and we became the composer duo – NakashSargam. Together we composed a lot of music for private albums and set up our own little studio in Malad, Mumbai for recording, mixing and programming.
Milestones… We got our lucky break when we were discovered by Smita Thackeray, who offered us her home production, Raada Rocks, which was also a launch pad for her son Rahul. During the course of our work as music directors in the film, Smita Thackeray and everybody else in the family encouraged me to do playback singing as well, and that is what led me to get my first break as a playback singer. I went on to sing for composers like Amit Trivedi in the movie ‘Aisha’ and in Rana Dugabatti’s debut Telugu film ‘Leader’ and for many composers like Sandeep Chowta and Karthik Raja in the South. We bagged a plum assignment in the serial Chandragupta Maurya and our work got a lot of good reviews. Meeting the Maestro… The happiest moment for me was when I came face to face with my idol – AR Rahman. He saw a spark in me, and gave me an opportunity to sing in his Commonwealth Games song ‘Jiyo Utho Badho’, and also work for him in Delhi 6 and Rockstar as a Music Programmer. For me it is a dream come true. The fact that Rehmansaab has acknowledged my talent is good enough for me and has given wings to my dream. What’s next? As music composers, we have currently teamed up with the director of Bhootnath, Vivek Sharma for his next
Hindi feature film and we are also composing for a movie made by Sandeep Patil’s sons Chirag and Prateek Patil . We have even got this great opportunity to compose music for Boney Kapoor’s Marathi remake of No Entry and Anu Malik has sung one of our songs in this film and this is the first time that he is singing a Marathi song. The pungi that defied all logic… The Big break that I was looking for came in the form of the famous ‘Pungi’ number in Saif Ali Khan’s ‘Agent Vinod’, with music director Pritam. We were assisting Pritam with his musical scores. Pritam wanted the ‘Pungi’ number to be a big hit and he was looking for a unique voice to sing along with Mika Singh. He tried many singers, me being one of them, and at the end of it all, when Pritam had to choose one voice, he chose mine! Today ‘Pungi’ is a hot number and it feels good to say it is sung by none other than Mika and me!

Plain sarees with beautiful borders and retro design blouses are being seen big time on the Bollywood red carpet – a mix of old world glamour and contemporary styling. The colour palette is evolving too. It’s time to go bolder with colour choices! Another new trend is bright pops of colour; while an all-over bright saree can be an eyesore, touches of brightness in colors like lime green, hot pink or a contrast shade, look fresh.

Indulgence Namita Ramani, Founder and Managing Director of SpaGenie visits the Ahasees Spa at the Grand Hyatt.
Ahasees offers its guests a wide range of teas and one can choose based on the ritual or one’s personal choice. I opted for the intensive Black Tea with blended spices like cardamom pods, star anise and cinnamon.
T
I was directed to the changing room where my relaxing fluffy robe looked like the promise of a heavenly experience. Hannu, the therapist was eagerly waiting to start my journey at Ahasees. The newly furbished room was looking warm and cozy! Each room was “equipped” with an ensuite bath for the guests and the beds were extremely comfortable and relaxing.
A few steps away, the outdoor swimming area was inviting the guests to take a refreshing bath, and next to it, the recreation space with fitness facilities and Technogym Equipments was waiting for the “action” to begin.
We began with a foot ritual. My feet were gently caressed with a combination of tea, sea salt and oils, that prepared them for the one-minute foot massage that works its wonders! It relaxes your muscles, dropping stress by 50%, so that you can be more open to the healing effect of massage.
he Grand Spa has come up with a new Spa concept and is now the Ahasees Spa- a retreat for ultimate indulgence. So here I was at the luxurious entrance of this spa, looking forward to a session of pampering and indulgence.
The first step – a consultation; every guest has to fill a consultation form, for the procedure to take place. I was introduced to the first key to this door to bliss – the music. The right sounds can turn a massage into a nirvana experience. It calms down your spirit, relaxes your mind and prepares the body to receive the rewarding energy of the hands. I made my choice of the soothing sounds of water lapping at a beach. The second selection that I made was far more interesting. According to the Spa rituals,
The crushed pearl blended into a salt cream base, provides a scrub that gently exfoliates and detoxifies the skin and the seaweed and geranium bring the renewal you were looking for. But, unlike Hammam, this scrub is applied while still lying on the bed, using the same massage movements. After an almost 45 minute massage with the scrub and a warm shower, the pearl cream polish was ready to take charge of my skin. Now, that my skin was smooth and soft, the Pearl
Balm body massage was about to bring it to the next level. This was a combination of long therapeutic strokes and Swedish message movements, designed to invigorate circulation and sooth the tiring muscles. I could literally feel all my exhaustion melting away, being replaced by a tranquil state of bliss and peace. But wait! There was more! The floatation bed was the final reward. All muscles were completely relaxed and even the word “tension” was forgotten. There were 120 minutes of pure bliss! I noticed the pearly shimmer of my skin. It was looking fresh and glittering in the light. As I was escorted to the relaxation lounge, my previously chosen spicy black tea was waiting for me. Its flavor woke up my sleepy, totally relaxed senses. I couldn’t have imagined a better beginning for the evening!

f you have an active and steady yoga practice, you are not constrained by age. You can be as fit at 50 as you were at 15, and as flexible and strong. You may, interestingly, discover that a regular yoga practice makes you more fit in your 50s than in your teens!
However, if you have not done yoga before and are starting anew, at whatever age, remember that there are some poses that are more suited for a particular age. This consideration
SUPER TONE FOR THE 20s In the 20s, the main problem area is skin eruptions and removing the baby fat that has accumulated in your teen years. The following pose should sort these multiple issues. PRASARITA PADOTTANASANA (Wide-legged forward bend): Stand with feet a metre apart. Point toes ahead. Place hands behind the hips, interlocking fingers. Inhale. Exhaling, lower head and torso as low as you can, to the ground. (This may take a few weeks of practice to achieve. Also, all intense stretches need some warm-up before practice session). It also involves balance, so power up from the feet, and move the focus to your inner thighs and hips, which give the support to hold the pose. If your balance is intact and you have practiced this regularly, you

may lift the hands up, still interlocked, up and away from the hips, into the air. Hold for as long as is possible. Breathe normally throughout. Inhale, and lift head back to starting position. Relax. Initially, do thrice. Increase duration in the final position to halfa-minute or so after regular practice over a few weeks. Benefits: It tones the entire body, shaping the arms, legs and thighs, especially the difficult inner thigh region, removing cellulite. The arm position tones the inner arms, and the workout at the hips shapes the waist. The forward bend sends a gush of blood to the face, keeping it glowing. The gush to the brain also sorts out the master gland that’s involved with various hormonal issues; which, if in trouble, leads to skin problems. Foods that tone:
Asparagus and celery are great skin toners. Have soups made from these, or use in your salads. Snack on peanuts and Brazil nuts. Papaya is a wonder food in this regard.
FIGHT THE SAG 30s In the 30s, sagging skin becomes noticeable. At the chin, as well as at the waist as awkward love handles, at the breasts, arms and thighs. Here is a simple pose to tone these stubborn soft spots all over. SARPASANA (Serpent pose): Lie on your stomach, with feet together as much as is possible. Interlock hands behind, placing them lightly at the hips. Inhaling, lift the chin and chest off the ground. Hold this pose for a while, breathing normally. After you get used to the pose, you may lift the hands off the hips, keeping the arms taut. Continue with the chin and chest up, looking ahead. Hold for 10 seconds initially. Do this thrice. After regular practice, you may increase duration to half-aminute or so.
Benefits: The upward lift tones the chest, removes the stubborn fat deposits at the chin and tightens the pectorals which support the breasts. The legs are toned when the feet remain together, especially the difficult to tone back of the thighs area. The arm position tones the waist and hips. Other benefits include hiked metabolism due to its effect on the thyroid, thus helping with weight loss. The parathyroid at the throat, involved with tissue health,
is also massaged; helping your skin regenerate. Sag fighting foods Chickpeas are great sag fighters. Hummus with nacho chips are great fun! Mangoes, when in season, help tighten the skin and also add a deep glow to the face. They moisturise you from the inside. Other anti-sag foods are raisins and dates.

pressure at the stomach tones the digestive system, keeps the pancreas healthy (holding diabetes at bay), and tones the liver. Helps reduce fat and trims the entire body superbly. Complete food for your 40s: Ensure your food gives you a complete nutrient uplift. Take fortified muesli. You can make it interesting by adding toppings that also tone your insides: raisins, apricots and slivered almonds. Add a dash of cinnamon to detox and keep blood sugar under control. Add olives to your diet: they contain iron, vitamin E, copper and great fats that help trim the bad type of fat.
FIT 40s Apart from dry skin and reduced elasticity, the 40s also invite hormonal fluxes, as if preparing the body for menopause. The hormonal problems create beauty problems too: dark circles around the eyes, large pores in the skin as collagen deposits shrink, age spots (as the skin finally succumbs to pressure from the sun and other environmental onslaught), reduced energy and that inevitable tired, fatigued, did-notsleep look. UTTANASANA (Standing forward bend/ full stretch): Stand straight, with feet together. Inhale; raise your hands as high as possible. Exhale; lower them to the ground. If possible, touch the ground; otherwise, just reach the legs where you can to hold them with your hands. Watch your balance because this pose can challenge that. Hold for a few seconds, breathing normally. Do thrice. After a few weeks of practice, increase its duration to a minute or so. Benefits: Replicates the effects of a headstand, without the effort involved. It gives a fantastic gush of blood to the head and face, keeping it glowing; Works on the master glands in the head such as pituitary, pineal and hypothalamus; to help keep your other hormones in check. The pressure at the throat works on the thyroid, hiking metabolism. The

FABULOUS 50s Some women panic or become depressed when they reach this benchmark, because their children are finally away and they are nearing the end of their professional careers. Added to the other problems afflicting the other groups, the main one may be depression and that leads to many ailments psychosomatically, such as a depressed immune system, flare-ups of chronic ailments like high blood pressure, diabetes, migraine etc. Here is a pose not to just add zest to your life, but also tone those parts of the body which fall prey to these chronic diseases.
Repeat for other side. After weeks of practice, increase time in final pose to half-a-minute. Benefits: Like all side-stretches, this is a mood elevator. It relieves tension from the body. Tones the whole body - arms, legs and waist. Controls diabetes.
Fit food: Avoid sugar. It causes skin wrinkling and affects collagen formation. Collagen is needed to keep skin smooth and youthful. Blue and purple fruits are richest in anti-oxidants, which help fight the ravages of free radicals which make us look old. Some great fruits are blueberries and pomegranates.
PARIVRTTA JANU SIRSASANA (Side stretch, head to knee pose): Sit with legs spread out. Bend right leg at the knee. Reach your left hand to hold the left leg at the foot (or where you can reach). Raise the right hand up, passing it over the right ear, and bending torso sideways, to touch the left hand. Ensure the bent knee is not lifting up. Hold for a few seconds, looking ahead. Do thrice for each side.

Home Perfect
Celebrity interior designer Sussanne Roshan of The Charcoal Project shares pointers to make a living room stand out with statement pieces.
Best Impressions T
rends in home décor suggest statement pieces are making a grand entry. Celebrity interior designer Sussanne Roshan avers, “My vision of design and imagination reaches a different dimension, especially in a spectacular setting.” According to her, ten ways to make your living room look fabulous are:
Choose a look. And then build a story around it. For example, if you decide on a Mediterranean style, then let the tone be set based on that theme. Thus, your furniture and furnishings should reflect the theme and appear to flow seamlessly. Pay attention to lighting. Careful emphasis on how you light your room can create many moods in a single space. Statement pieces get emphasis according to how you light them up.
44 TeleLIFE
PAY ATTENTION TO LIGHTING. CAREFUL EMPHASIS ON HOW YOU LIGHT YOUR ROOM CAN CREATE MANY MOODS IN A SINGLE SPACE. Think of the colours that you wish to deploy in your room. Mix and match, or use neutral tones. Your entire room can come alive if you get the colours right. Think about your seating plan. Try and create intimate corners where multiple groups and dialogues can happen, as opposed to one large seating area. Add elements through furnishings and throws to make the seating special and interesting. Use accent pieces that draw the eye and add a touch of elegance to the room. This could be in the form of a special piece of furniture, a sculpture or something unique.
Art can play a very special role in embellishing your room. If you are interested in classic, contemporary, modern or abstract art, pick pieces with care. The art that works the best is the art that you will love forever. The hue of your floors have to be in harmony with the rest of the mood. Windows and doors can also be the key to create a look. For instance, French windows bring in natural light, while heavy wood creates a masculine look. The Japanese are especially adept at creating a Zen look with the use of light wood windows and doors.
Good quality floor furnishings like carpets and kilms can make a room look rich and elegant. The luxury of fresh blooms brings natural colour and life in a space. It gives an elegant touch to a beautiful room. Use accent pieces that draw the eye and add a touch of flair to the room. This could be in the form of a special piece of furniture, a sculpture or something unique. Add elements through furnishings and throws to make the seating special and interesting. Choose a look. And then build a story around it. For example, if you decide on a Mediterranean style, then let the tone be set based on that theme. Photographs: The Charcoal Project

One look at the luscious chess board and you will hardly be able to wait to pull it out and capture a tasty pawn – biting off its top as your victory prize. This is the latest offering of edible and playable chocolate art from none other than the first lady of chocolate in India, Zeba Mitha Kohli. and whatnot - Zeba has never failed to mesmerize choco lovers! For she’s a chocolatier who’s obsessed with the art of combining exciting flavours that satiate your taste buds and ignite your mind. CHARTING THE CHOCOLATE COURSE ‘If honey can sing, chocolate can talk.’ A white board with this wonderful saying greets in Zeba’s spacious office in South Mumbai. Her cabin is filled with books, big and small, on all things, you guessed right, chocolate! “Chocolate making is not frivolous; it is hardest to create a new flavour,” Zeba points out, and goes down memory lane to tell us about her early days. ‘Fantasie Fine Chocolates’ was a brand that was started by her grandfather, and she became the director at the young age of 18. “I was all of eight when I’d come to our store with my mum. I’d eat chocolate and play with it. As I grew, I started helping around. I then started contributing intellectually to what I thought was delicious, and started playing around with flavours.” FUN IN THE SUN But Zeba learnt everything on the job. She went abroad, worked at cafés and apprenticed at chocolateries to hone her skills. She made constant reinventing and evolving the name of her game. “When it comes to chocolate, I am a little mad I’ve done some real bizarre stuff! I’ve done polka dotted chocolates, chocolate stoles, chocolate glasses and bottles... I’ve even made a chocolate movie on Gandhi.” The underlying formula in all her creations being: innovation
ZEBA’S SEVEN MANTRAS FOR DELICIOUS LIVING: 1. Don’t read between the lines because if you need to know something, it will be there for you to see. 2. Keep smiling. After a while it becomes a habit and say ‘sorry’ and ‘thank you’ as much as you need to. 3. Don’t worry about perfection. It is a relative word. Perfection is about getting a timely job done to the best of your capacity and knowledge.
“WHEN IT COMES TO CHOCOLATE, I AM A LITTLE MAD I’VE DONE SOME REAL BIZARRE STUFF! I’VE DONE POLKA DOTTED CHOCOLATES, CHOCOLATE STOLES, CHOCOLATE GLASSES AND BOTTLES... I’VE EVEN MADE A CHOCOLATE MOVIE ON GANDHI.” and fun. “I want people to enjoy chocolates unconditionally.” SHINING ON! Over the years, Zeba’s trademark chocolates became hugely popular and her company gained the reputation of being one of the most innovative brands in the luxury chocolate market. On the personal front too, she found happiness in her marriage to businessman Rajesh Kohli who became the wind beneath her wings, allowing her to follow her dream relentlessly. And today, from one store, Zeba has expanded to six and is still raring to go; her recent feat being the launch of her signature line. “My new

gourmet premium line is a refreshing and subtle range of flavours which melt in the mouth like little pieces of heaven. They will come in a riot of stunningly coloured packaging,” she delightfully informs. Incidentally, she has also redesigned her stores to make them look trendy and contemporary. CHOCOLICIOUS! Does Zeba love eating chocolates as much as she enjoys creating them? “I am a foodie. I love my chocolate as much as my biryani,” she smiles. And do chocolates form a part of the dinner table conversation at home? “Well, my teen daughters are very interested in what I do; they constantly question me. They think out-of-the-box and give me their inputs too,” she adds happily. So how does she strike the work-life balance? Considering that she also runs Sunville Banquets (the family business), gives lectures in colleges and runs the family charitable trust that educates orphan kids... “I prioritize and delegate. Everything is important in my life. My husband, my children, my chocolates, my Sunville; but I have to decide what comes first, now in this one hour what is important. And you have to keep your health ‘n’ heart strong. Then everything becomes easy.”

Planning your annual holiday? TeleLIFE introduces you to three lesser-known islands in the coastal region of South India — covering the states of Andhra Pradesh, Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Southern I
Delights
f you ever plan a trip to South India, then explore places which might not have made it to travel websites, magazines or even guides - places that have been tagged as hot spots after tourists made adventurous trips that kept bringing them back for more. Land of the Sun God Let us start with Suryalanka, a beach situated nine kilometers from Bapatla town in Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh. The name itself suggests that it is the ‘land of the Sun God’. Travel to Suryalanka is most convenient by road. Take a flight to Hyderabad, capital city of the state of Andhra Pradesh. Guntur is 350 kilometers from
52 TeleLIFE
Hyderabad by road. You could hire a cab or even take the State Transport bus services or even trains, which is a journey of ten hours. The drive to Bapatla from Guntur town is at least 25 kilometers. You could book a cottage at the Suryalanka Resorts (AP Tourism) or even chose to stay in the tiny shacks. The main attraction of this pristine beach is the blue calm waters of the Bay of Bengal. Considering its name, several people believe it to be auspicious. There are several temples of Indian deities, especially Lord Rama, Lord Shiva and also a Hanuman temple. The specialties of these temples are the idols of the deities which are huge in size like sky scrapers.
The beach has a flat terrain and slopes into the sea with the wide and clear shore and the crystal clear waters of the Bay of Bengal, a treat for sore eyes. You can drive down to Suryalanka for a quiet evening combined with a swim, scuba diving and snorkeling. A Paradise of Eight Islands Kerala is known as Gods own country for a reason. The heart of this state, which is formed by eight islands, Munroe Island, is the combination of eight tiny islands in Kollam district. This palm fringed island is formed by the confluence of the backwaters of Ashtamudi Lake and Kallada River. To get to Munroe, you can take a flight to Tiruvanathapuram International Airport
The Last Destination—Literally And finally, the Land’s End; the tip separating India from Srilanka; the heavenly island of Dhanushkodi, situated on the eastern coast of Tamil Nadu. When you arrive there, you will be awestruck as you stand on a narrow piece of land, with Indian Ocean on one side and Bay of Bengal on the other, forming a confluence. It is easy to get to Dhanushkodi, which is 25 kilometers from Rameshwaram, the holy pilgrimage town in South India. Once you get to Rameshwaram, which is a four hour drive from Madurai in Tamil Nadu, you can easily enquire from the locals about transport to Dhanushkodi. This island is named after a British, Colonel John Munroe as he was instrumental in setting a seminary to train priests. The famous Kallada Boat Race is also a hallmark of Munroe. You have the option of renting a boat house and traverse on the serene back waters with lush greenery surrounding you. Village artisans specialize in coir retting and coir weaving and the main activities include fishing, prawn feeding and bird watching. The island is dotted with several Ayurvedic therapeutic centres that Kerala is known for, and they offer a wide range of holistic treatments, massages, yoga
KERALA IS KNOWN AS GODS OWN COUNTRY FOR A REASON. THE HEART OF THIS STATEW IS THE COMBINATION OF EIGHT TINY ISLANDS IN KOLLAM DISTRICT. and then travel by road for 71 kilometers to reach Kollam Railway Station. From there you have to traverse another 25 kilometers to reach paradise. You could hire a cab or even take the local state transport. If you are ready for some adventure, then you could even take the inland water transport system. A drive to this place will give you a glimpse of the wildlife.
and meditation to rejuvenate your mind and body. Munroe being a tourist attraction for decades has several reputed resorts and hotels and is famed for its mouth watering and sumptuous sea food. Another attractive option is to stay in local houses rented out to visiting tourists and enjoy homemade delicious traditional Kerala cuisine and hospitality.
Travelling in your own transport could be easier if you have a local from Rameshwaram accompanying you. The alternative is to hire jeeps which are available at a minimal rate of Rs 100-200. The drive to Dhanushkodi is beautiful, as you start seeing the end of the road. As you get closer, you will have to abandon the vehicle and walk for about five kilometers as you will find that the end of land is just white sand for miles. The history to this place is intriguing. The Sethu, in Indian mythology is known to be a bridge separating Srilanka and India, built by the Vanarsena (clan of monkeys) under the direction of Lord Rama. The Lord built the bridge to rescue his wife Sita who was kidnapped and held by Ravana, the king of Lanka. Dhanushkodi is the place where Lord Rama is known to have cut the bridge with one end of his bow, thus the name—Dhanush meaning bow and Kodi meaning end. As you reach closer to the tip of the white sand, you can see the remnants of the Sethu, also known as Rama’s Bridge or Adam’s Bridge. You will see chain of rocks and islets which will lead 19 miles across the Paik Strait to Mannar Island on the North Western tip of Srilanka. You could go boating, fishing, even enjoy scuba diving and snorkeling. Bathed in the glorious rays of the setting sun, you can enjoy freshly prepared seafood that will leave you asking for more!
