Welcome to Fall Golf in North Texas. Our summer was another mild

By Mike Kiesling, Director of Golf

experience as compared to other years. As we transition into the more pleasurable temperatures of fall, we have a lot to be excited for. October and November offer some of the best playing conditions, weather, and Member events of the entire year. A big thank you to all of our Members for their support of the golf agronomy team through another Texas Summer. Our membership did a great job showing their appreciation for our agronomy team with ball mark repairs, pairing up in carts together, and sanding of divots during their rounds. Repairing ball marks on the greens is critical to their overall health, especially during times of weather related stress.

Over the Summer months we had two marquee events for our Club. In May, we hosted the Lady Nelson Women’s Member-Guest. This annual competition is a wonderful showcase of our Club, and based on participant feedback this was one of the most enjoyed and well programmed Lady Nelson’s we have ever had. Congratulations to Member Pam Strand and her committee for all of their hard work and planning to create this memorable event. In addition to orchestrating such an incredible golf experience, the Lady Nelson also generated $8,000 for our Rally Fore a Cure Charity, benefitting the Baylor, Scott, & White Irving Hospital. In June, we had our Member-Member Championship. Unfortunately, we missed the 2020 event due to Covid restrictions, but this year’s competition featured a full field of 60 teams. After 2 days of intense competition, the team of Jake Istnik and Jon Bowman captured low gross honors, and the team of Josh Dunlap and Tim Cusick captured low net. Congratulations to our newest Club Champions: Steven Holtgrieve-Men’s Club Champion, Art Sellinger-Men’s Senior Club Champion, Margarita Acosta-Women’s Club Champion, and Diane Butler-Women’s Senior Club Champion. The 2021 Club Championship was conducted September 24th through September 26th on both of our championship courses. The friendly competition was intense for each flight, and memories were created for all. We also held our Junior Club Championship over the summer and congratulations to Billy Gordon-Junior Boys 15 & Up and Rachel Pryor-Junior Girls 15 & Up for winning the titles of Boys Club Champion and Girls Club Champion. Now we look forward to our next Club Championship event of 2021, the Couples Club Championship. Couples, please mark your calendars for November 13th and 14th. The Couples Club Championship will be open to couples that are on the same Membership together. Since 1992, the Resort has given more than $3 million dollars and more than $100,000 more in in-kind support to Irving Healthcare Foundation, and all of it has been used to improve care for cancer patients at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Irving. This year we orchestrated another successful golf event, the “Party on the Patio” which netted an additional $30,000 for the charity. A big thank you to the Greenough family and their very generous sponsorship of this year’s golf event, as well as their contributions to other activities around the Club that support the Irving Foundation. The golf shop holiday sale is scheduled for Friday, December 3rd during the Santa Club Crawl. We are fully stocked for all your golf needs (and wants). Don’t miss out on this great event, especially now that several of you have all the credit book to spend from Association, and Club events this year. All credit book will expire on December 31st, so don’t miss this opportunity for some good saving opportunities. The golf professional staff has been working hard with the golf services committee to plan a great 2022 golf event calendar. We look forward to seeing you at the Club, building new relationships, and enjoying this amazing game.

Are you properly using the BOUNCE on your WEDGE SHOTS?

Golf

When evaluating a student’s short game, one of the first things I look for is “Does the student understand how to use the bounce of the club around the greens?” What is Bounce? By Jack Danshmand, Head Golf Instructor & Junior Golf Coordinator

Bounce is the angle of the club from the leading edge to the sole. Understanding how this part of the club needs to interact with the ground is very important to hitting higher, softer shots around the green. Getting the player to let the club slide through the ground gives them more room for error. Faults - Address 1.

BACK HEALTH in Golf

By Dr. Amanda Kayser

Golfing presents many health and psychosocial benefits due to it’s physical activity and social interaction. And although the benefits are great, one of the most common complaints I hear from clients who golf regularly is that they have reoccurring low back pain. The golf swing is a repetitive, asymmetrical motion that includes high forces that are in nature, compressive and torsional loading on the spine. And if you love the game, you’ll repeat that same motion multiple days a week golfing a few rounds along with a few buckets of golf balls hit on the driving range. Where does our back movement come from? The spine is made up of 3 sections, 33 vertebral bones, 40 muscles and 364 joints, not to mention various ligaments and connective tissue. To have and maintain full range of motion in our back, it is key that all of these components are functioning to their full capacity. Risk Factors to Low Back Pain In Golf The mechanics of the golf swing have gotten a lot of credit for low back pain over the years. Other factors may include: asymmetrical hip range of motion, method used to transport your golf bag, general strength surrounding back and core, strength in hip musculature and limited abnormal ankle mechanics.

HOW DO WE PREVENT LOW BACK PAIN IN GOLFERS? Range of Motion It is key to have full range of motion in your spine from your head to your low back. Going through full ranges pre and post golfing is a great start to allowing your back to prepare for the higher loads during impact. I recommend going through all ranges of motion: flexion, extension, rotation and side bending. Stretching If you are lacking range of motion and tend to feel pain and tightness in your lower back, stretching the muscles surrounding the spine is important. Stretches should last a minimum duration of 45 seconds, should be completed twice, and on both sides. Do not forget to include muscles above and below the area of intent. For example, hips and legs should not be neglected as they attach directly into our pelvis and plays a role into our spinal mechanics.

SALUTE TO SERVICE

Asymmetrical Training Don’t neglect your non dominant side! The high repetitive use of our spine in one direction causes a significant imbalance in our body. It is important to train the opposite direction to maintain equilibrium. In the gym or at home, add in rotational movements that incorporate going to the opposite side of your golf swing. This can include medicine ball throws, cable rotations or even swing the golf club on the opposite side for range of motion. Although many factors come into play, small changes can help you maintain a healthy back to keep you out on the golf course!

On June 3rd, over 30 Members participated in packing 100 care packages that were sent overseas to approximately 1,000 servicemen and servicewomen. Here are a few of the comments & letters we received.

My company received your care packages. I wanted to reach out and say thank you. The support and care your packages represent cannot be understated, especially given everything that has gone on this past year. The company I command consists mostly of first term soldiers, straight out of their initial entry training. For most of these soldiers it is their first time being this far away from their homes and families This distance from home can be particularly hard on them in light of the ongoing pandemic and unrest back in the States. The packages you sent represent a small piece of home for them during these challenging times. Again, I cannot thank you enough for this gesture of kindness and support. In the modern world we live in, it is an honor to serve knowing there are people like you back home.

— M Gallup - Captain, Aviation Commanding

I, Chad Reister, wanted to inform you that we have received your care packages. As a Chaplain I bag those items up and take them to their battle positions. The Service Members are very appreciative for your donations. For God and Country CH Reister No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in the concerns of civilian life; he seeks to please the recruiter. 2 Timothy 2:4

Tennis

TENNIS –

a game of MENTAL WARFARE! We all know that tennis can be a game of physical strength. Whoever is the

strongest and can hit the hardest serve or forehand, or is the fastest and can cover the entirety of the court the best, or has the most endurance to survive not only a 2-hour match but also the elements of a 95-degree day, will presumably win the tennis match… most of the time. But there is a very important aspect of tennis that people tend to forget about, and that is the mental aspect. It’s been said that sports are 20 percent physical and 80 percent mental. I say in tennis, it’s more 10 percent physical and 90 percent mental. Tennis is such a unique game because problem solving is solely up to the player and only the player. And in a sense that can be isolating and can really mess with the mind. Besides a doubles partner in some cases, players really have no teammates on court to bear the load with or substitute in. There is technically no coaching allowed during a match. And we are expected to figure out by ourselves how to get out of certain situations and into a winning momentum, all without any real support or coaching. Trying to figure all that out, while simultaneously battling the physical obstacles, can be psychologically taxing. It is very important to be mentally tough, especially when the physical strength inevitably goes away deep into the 3rd set and fatigue starts to kick in. Learn court awareness and how to play the proper shots, and more importantly, at the proper times. The fastest ball hit may not be the smartest ball played. You’ll need to learn how to manage your shot selection. There is beauty in learning how to play a tennis match as a chess match and not so much as who can hit the ball the hardest. Angles, off-speed shots, and spins really come a long way especially at the right times. Aside from that and even more importantly, learn how to manage your emotions. The player who is more level-headed has a higher likelihood of walking away with the win. In tennis, you need to have short term memory. If you lose the previous point, you may constructively reflect on what happened, but don’t negatively dwell in it. Focus on the next point and how you can win that one.

CHAMPIONS FROM 2021!

2021 SINGLES CLUB CHAMPIONS

By Jason Abante, Tennis Coordinator Utilize every second in between each point to breathe, relax, and get your mind right. You’ve got to think and stay positive. It’s very easy to dwell on the negative. But don’t let the negative moments skew your view of the whole match. A player will remember the double fault they just had the previous point, but can easily forget the passing winner they hit after a 20 ball rally just 3 points ago. Going back to percentages, just as how tennis is 10 percent physical and 90 percent mental, you may have a day of tennis where you find 10 percent of your play positive and 90 percent completely negative. Find that sliver of positivity, even if it’s only 10 percent, and utilize it to help your game. Enjoy every moment in the heat of battle and have fun with this game. We tell kids all the time before a big game to most importantly “have fun”, and that is still applicable to adult tennis as well. So, stay positive and have fun!

Just about anyone can play – all ages and all skill levels from different athletic backgrounds, from experienced tennis players to folks who have never even held any type of racquet.

The RECIPE to a

WINNING PICKLEBALL STRATEGY

With Pickleball being one of the fastest growing sports in America we are seeing a surge in country clubs and sports clubs everywhere! There are so many reasons why Pickleball has been able to captivate so many! Whether you have an athletic background or you’ve never done anything athletic in your life, anyone who can swing a paddle will most certainly enjoy this fresh and unique sport!

5

Here are a few of my secret tips and strategies that will help you create a solid foundation for your Pickleball game and allow you to find immediate success.

1

Utilize the “DINK”

Since Pickleball is a finesse sport, even more so than tennis, incorporating dinks (which are crafty touch shots that land just inside the kitchen) will keep opponents on their toes and unable to take/maintain the offense.

2

Get to the Net!

In Pickleball, 9 times out of 10 the player who takes the net first will control the rhythm of the point. The options of play open up vastly when you can beat your opponents to the net. You can pull them forward or drive them back when an aggressive position is established at net.

Reset with the Lob!

3

When on defense, continuing to attempt passing shots could spell trouble if your opponent has better court positioning or simply has superior reflexes. A deep lob is a shot that can reset an entire point, and keep your opponent from pushing you around.

Punish Floaters

Once you’ve established an offensive position at the net, be ready to pounce on any floaters that your opponent might cough up! A floater is what I consider to be any ball that comes above your belly. Once you recognize a floater, the best place to aim is right at the toes of an opposing player. A shot to the shoelaces is extremely tough to rebound from, you’ll find your opponents getting tangled up time and time again.

6

Have Fun!

Pickleball is proving to be one of the most entertaining and social sports around. Taking the court with a group of friends or family members is a sure way to fall in love with this amazing sport. So get out there and give it a go! The Pickleball Bug is BITING EVERYONE!

4

Serve Smart

When serving, it is important to make your opponent uncomfortable right from the first ball. This is crucial because you can only accumulate points on serve. Utilizing good speed, spin, and placement will stop a returner from putting you on defense. Since the wiffleball is much lighter than a tennis ball you can take huge cuts while still keeping the ball in play. So be brave and start your point with an aggressive mind set.

Recipe by

CHEF OZZIE JORDAN Club Chef de Cuisine

Savory Bread Pudding This savory bread pudding is perfect for Fall and winter, honestly any type of firm bread works. Personally, I like to bake it individual portions and use it in my main courses. You can even enjoy it with some gravy.

Yields 6 servings • 1 lb. Focaccia Bread (1 inch Diced)

8 each whole egg

10 oz. heavy whipping cream

1 tbsp Fresh Rose Mary (fine Chopped)

1 tbsp Fresh Thyme (fine Chopped)

2.5 oz. Shredded Asiago Cheese

2 pinches of Salt

1 pinch of black Pepper

Whisk heavy cream, eggs, rosemary, asiago, thyme, salt, and ground pepper in large bowl to create the custard mix. Add diced bread into the custard and let it soaked for 5 minutes. Transfer the mixture to buttered baking molds. “I use coffee cups.” Preheat oven to 375°F and bake the pudding uncovered for about 18 minutes. Note: If you desire to use one single mold, it will take longer to bake.
