FROM THE

BOG Chairman

F OU R SE A S ON S G OL F & SP ORT S C LU B C OM M U N I T Y,

s we welcome in the new year, we have much to be grateful for as we look back on 2021 and look forward to 2022. The Cure for All Seasons was incredibly successful raising over $177,000 for the Baylor, Scott, and White Medical Center in Irving. It was truly a team effort with the Members who have given so generously, the committees that worked so diligently to support all the efforts and the management and staff that created and ran the venues that were so successful! We thank all of you! Our committees and their leadership are set to continue the strides in 2022 that saw an enhanced experience across all functions, increased participation across all activities and the creation and implementation of many new events. We continue to welcome New Members and their families and New Member Orientation to help their integration into our Club! Your Board of Governors welcomes David Evans as our newest member. David has been very involved in many prior club activities and chaired the Nelson Cup in 2021. We look forward to his contributions. The Board will continue to work to enhance the experience for all the Members, to be your advocate and sounding board to ensure the best possible communications to the Members and Management. In particular, the Board and Management will continue to share the many changes to our facilities and the timing of their implementation. We also wish to thank Judy Mason for her four years of service on the Board and for all her contributions! We are truly excited about the possibilities for 2022 for our club. We have come through a very challenging year with COVID and the guidelines we had to work with during this crisis! Our Management Team did an excellent job of balancing the guidelines with the best options to keep our club open and safe for all the members. We cannot thank David Bernand and Jim Kern and his team enough for the effort and results for our members and our facilities during this pandemic! On a final note, your Board of Governors are committed to continuing to make the Club the best choice and decision for all our Members! We know we still have many challenges ahead of us this coming year and we commit to do our best to represent all the members in our quest for excellence in all areas of our Club and overall experience! Thanks to all our Members for your continued support and your candid input on how we can achieve the best Club experience for all of us! Here’s to a terrific 2022!

FROM THE

General Manager

De a r Fou r Se a sons G olf

and

Sports Club Members,

APPY NEW YEAR! I’m confident our future at the Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club has never been brighter and I hope you are excited about 2022 as your Club management team has many new initiatives for the Club with new programming and facility improvements. For almost four decades our Club has enjoyed a storied, multi-generational history, and this living legacy will continue to grow. In that spirit, we are working hard to continually adapt Club programs and products to the evolving and diverse interest and trends of our fast growing membership. We have implemented many updates to programs, services, and amenities that fit members interest and feedback. The overall member experience has become the most multi-dimensional offering of any Club in the DFW metroplex. Our goal has always been to become “The Most Admired Club in Dallas” and based on the fact that we have already achieved “Full With a Wait List” status in the Golf category, and soon will achieve that status in the Tennis and Fitness categories of membership, we can all take great pride in our Club. The overall growth in membership has been remarkable and the feedback we are getting from our members and community assures us we are on the right track for success. We are working hard with our owners to overcome the challenges in scheduling the planned renovations for the Club. Supply chain issues and labor has proven to be a very big hurdle, but we are addressing those projects we can get done as soon as possible. The order that these renovations happen are not based on priority, but availability of materials and contractors to do the work. The new Pickle Ball courts have started and a contractor has been hired. We anticipate this new amenity will be operational early Spring. We have final design work completed for Locker Rooms, Members Lounge, Driving Range as well as improvements to our indoor and outdoor Tennis Courts and several other updates to common areas of the Club. We anticipate the timeline and renderings will be available to share early in the year. I would like to welcome long time member David Evans for his election to serve on your Board of Governors starting in 2022. I would also like to thank Judy Mason for her service on the Board the past four years and the many contributions she has made to improve your Club. Our 2022 focus and beyond is to be ready for the COVID mandates and restrictions to be fully lifted and remain working in close collaboration with your Board of Governors and committees to increase the value of your membership with every decision that is made throughout the organization. I would especially like to thank our dedicated staff, many of them impacted by the challenges of this difficult time, for sustaining an excellent level of service day-in and day-out during this crisis. Looking forward to a great 2022 at the Four Seasons Golf and Sports Club,

See you at the Club,

Jim Kern, PGA General Manager

Golf

We hope everyone enjoyed the Holiday season and were able to spend some quality time with loved ones that you may not have been able to do so with last year. Maybe some of

you got some new golf goodies that you cannot wait to try out on the course. One day it could be gorgeous and we are putting on shorts, and the next day (or even later on the same day), we are dressing up with multiple layers to enjoy this game of golf despite the weather. It is nice to live in a climate that allows us the ability to play golf year round. By Mike Kiesling, Director of Golf

This past year we saw in increase in participation for virtually all Club golf events. Golf instruction also saw a large uptick over previous years as well. We are excited for the upcoming season and all of the new events that help create new relationships and connections. Here is a simple one-page calendar of things to look forward to in 2022. With the start of the New Year, we should remind everyone about simple things most golfers take for granted. What is our responsibility while on the golf course? It is quite simple, we should try to leave it in the exact same condition we found it so that others can enjoy the same level experience that we did. Do you actively look for your ball marks and repair them? Even if you ball did not stay on the green? Maybe instead of pointing out all of the unrepaired ball marks we try to fix every single one we see. Do we rake after ourselves when we play from a bunker? Did I use all of the sand in my cart to fill divots? Make it your mission this year to own a certain hole on each of our golf courses. Pay extra attention to ball marks, or unfilled divots on those holes when you are playing. Let’s also instill these same etiquette values into our juniors when we have them accompany us for a round of golf.

A Lot to Look Forward to in 2022 8

Keys to getting a FEW MORE YARDS off the TEE BOX

By Jack Danshmand, Head Golf Instructor & Junior Golf Coordinator

Tee Height

Stance

Before you even think about your swing, you need to tee the ball up. You typically want about half the ball to sit above the face of the driver when you tee it up. This makes it easier for you to hit up on the ball and elevate the ball of the tee.

Ball position will be forward portion of your stance, just inside your lead heel. This will allow you to catch the ball at the end of your swing arc when you are hitting up on the ball. To get this position, set up with your feet together even with the ball and then take a wide set up with your trail foot. This will put you in a nice, wide base to make an athletic and powerful swing.

TEE HEIGHT

STANCE Spine Tilt

Backswing

Once you get in this position, grip the club with your lead hand. Your shoulders should be level and square at this point. Next, put your trail hand on the club. When you do this, your spine will naturally tilt away from the target.

Shift your body slightly into your trail side while rotating your hips and chest away from the target.

SPINE TILT

BACKSWING Downswing Shift and press into your lead foot followed by rotating with the lower body. When pressing into your lead foot you will be applying force to creating faster club head speed. Finish Remember to swinging to a balance finish will help the overall sequence of the swing.

We believe many of you know that John Brechin has been Chair of the Handicap Committee for nine years and has done an incredible job of leading our Club in this important role. He has both an amazing grasp of the rules and regulations, as well as deep data and analytical skills. We have been lucky to have John in this role for so long. Please thank him next time you see him. David Evans will chair the committee for 2022 along with help and support from John and the rest of the committee members. • • • • •

David Evans – Chair Bob Armstrong Mike Bannon John Brechin Diane Butler

Four Seasons Resort and Club Handicap Data Based on all the handicap statistical data for tournament play and individual member play, our Club has no systemic indications of handicap manipulation. However, there are education opportunities for us to help the membership with handicap rules and obligations. We are planning a series of communications to the membership through Mike Kiesling’s weekly update and the Club’s quarterly newsletter. Our goal is to provide confidence to the membership that all competitive golf events are conducted fairly, and all Members possess a current and accurate handicap. Our Club does not have an issue with handicap manipulation today and we want it to continue. This communication will focus on score posting obligations and posting accurate scores.

• • • • •

Larry LeVan David Pfaff Pam Strand John Ulrey Mike Kiesling

If you play a minimum of 7 holes, then you should post a 9 hole score, and if you play 14 or more holes, then you should post an 18 hole score. Rounds where you play 10-13 holes, merely post the 9 hole score and discard scores for holes 10 through 13. When scoring holes not played, you should estimate the score you most likely would receive on those holes. This is accomplished with a simple calculation of using your course handicap and the handicap of the holes not played. For each hole simply compare your course handicap to the hole handicap. If the hole handicap is higher than your course handicap, record a par. If your course handicap is higher than the hole handicap by 18 or less, then record a bogey. This applies to all unplayed holes meeting the criteria above. Total Score Posting or Hole by Hole

Posting Scores All golfers are required to post a score after play of 7 holes or more, no matter the format or circumstances of the round. The only exception is if play is in a format where you do not play your own ball, like Scrambles or Alternate Shot. It is our obligation to post our own score and with the GHIN app it is super easy. So please make sure you post scores the day of, for all rounds you play. Rounds of 7 holes to 13 holes require the posting of a 9 hole score and rounds of 14 holes or more require the posting of an 18 hole score. This is part of your obligation in maintaining and accurate handicap.

Lastly, while it is perfectly okay to post 18 hole total scores, it is preferred for us to post hole by hole scores. This helps the handicap committee and the Club in multiple ways. Again, this is easy with the GHIN app, and you can just open the app while you play and post your score as you go along. It is also important to know the maximum score you can record for your handicap on each hole. If you post hole by hole with the GHIN app, this is automatically calculated for you. Maximum score on any hole is NET double bogey. When posting GROSS scores hole by hole in the app, this will be done automatically for you

Scoring Accuracy It is also important we post accurate scores. First, make sure you choose the correct tee box you played. Do not play from the Blue Tees, then post the score from the White Tees! If the format of your round causes you to not finish a hole, you are still obligated to post a score that is the most likely score you would have made on the hole. Simply estimate the number of strokes you think it would take to hole out. If you are on the green 20 feet away, then it is reasonable to assume you would take two more strokes. If you are off the green by 100 yards, then you might estimate three additional strokes. Not overly complicated, just use reasonable effort in estimating the score for the hole(s) you did not finish. 12

SHOULDER MOBILITY for Golf

When it comes to your golf swing, adequate rotation at the shoulder is very important, particularly in the trail arm as this allows you to set the angle of the club at the top of your backswing. A mobile By Josh Biard, shoulder and strong stabilizing back muscles not only give you additional swing power, but also Athletic Manager enables a smooth and controlled swing, decreasing your likelihood of injury. The best way to improve your shoulder mobility is to not only stretch, but to also strength the muscles of your shoulders. Here are my 6 favorite strength and flexibility exercises, designed to improve your shoulder mobility. Band Face Pull

Two Handed Front Press

Attach a resistance band at eye level. Grasp the free end with both hands, palms facing down, and step back to put tension on the band with your arms extended. Pull the band toward your head, spreading it apart as far as possible while pulling.

Grip a single dumbbell with right hand tucked under left. While bracing your core and pulling your shoulder blades together and down, push the dumbbell in front of you, keeping your arms parallel to the floor. Pull the dumbbell back toward chest to complete the first rep. Complete 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions

Band Face Pull

Complete 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions Shoulder Pendulum Swing Support your right arm on a table, chair or bench. Grasp a dumbbell with your left arm and allow it to relax and hang freely. With control, begin making small circles, gradually getting bigger with each swing. After 30 seconds, reverse direction. Repeat for a total of 2 minutes on each arm Reverse fly

Doorway Stretch Stand in a doorway in a split stance with elbows and arms forming a 90-degree angle. With forearms on the door frame, gently lean into the stretch and hold for up to 60 seconds. This stretch can be completed using both arms at the same time or alternating arms. Try each to determine which variation gives you the better stretch. Perform 2–3 times on each side A-frame Rotations

With a dumbbell in each hand, stand with your feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent. Engage your core and bend forward at the waist, keeping your back straight and arms extended, raise your arms away from your body. While maintaining a controlled motion, squeeze your shoulder blades together and raise the dumbbells to shoulder height before returning to the starting position. Complete 3 sets of 10-12 repetitions 14

Shoulder Pendulum Swing WINTER 2022

Standing with feet shoulder width apart and knees slightly bent, kneel forward and place your right elbow on the inside of your right knee, while bracing your fist against your left knee. While keeping your left arm straight with fingers pointed toward the ground, twist at your waist and reach your left side towards the sky. Hold this position for several breaths before returning to the starting position. Complete 8-10 repetitions on each side

Tennis

A New Year means a New Player...YOU! Since Spring 2020, we’ve seen a MASSIVE surge in the sport of tennis, as many more people across the nation and here in Dallas have caught the bug. Courts have been filling up, more groups have formed, and new players are emerging. This is all so exciting for tennis! And the fun continues this year as well. Now it By Jason Abante, 2022, more of this remains the same as activity continues to skyrocket. Not only in tennis, but other Tennis Coordinator variations of racquet sports as well. Pickleball, Padel, Touch Tennis, and even Beach Tennis! And we encourage you to try these new different tennis games, as it’ll help your “true” tennis immensely. We’ve got a consistent Pickleball group thanks to our membership and Tennis Staff/Pickleball Instructor, Wesley Edwards. And we even have some permanent pickleball courts soon!

The new year also calls for new resolutions. And what better way to practice self-improvement than through tennis. If you’re one of those players who caught the bug Spring 2020 during quarantine, now is a good time to really push yourself and give yourself some goals. Maybe now instead of practicing strictly on a ball machine, try practicing with another hitting partner. If you’re already there and hitting with folks, think about making it a goal to participate in some competition such as League, Match Play, or Team Season! Your goals can be as big as winning the upcoming Spring Season, or even as simple as perfecting that one-handed backhand slice. And you don’t have to be a brand new player to have goals. You can be a player with years of experience under your belt and still fix some aspects of your game and learn something new. I, myself, have had a racquet in my hand for 20+ years, and my most recent goal is to fix my serve. I’ve never had the strongest serve (it’s tough when you stand at 5’3”!), but I’ve gotten great tips and advice from our Director of Tennis, Jerome Millet! I also made it a goal in 2021 to play in a tournament, my first one in 8 years. My goal this year is to play in another tournament and actually win a match this time! Whatever your goals are, now is a great time to shoot for them. No matter how big or small your tennis resolutions are, as long as they keep you on the court, it’ll surley make for another great year of tennis!

TIPS FROM THE PROS

Use The Offseason to Gain Confidence on Your Weaker Shots By Jerome Millet, Head Tennis Professional

Struggling with that backhand? Uncomfortable at net with that low volley? A great time to multiply repetitions and gain confidence on those shots is in between seasons. Force yourself to get out of your comfort zone and practice those weaker shots. During practice matches, using the ball machine, with a sparring partner or a tennis professional.

BRINGING BALANCE to Your By Wesley Edwards, Tennis Staff/Pickleball Pro Pickleball Doubles Team Communication and balance are elements that are vital in any partnership, but especially a pickleball doubles partnership! Teams who are able to communicate and maintain synchronicity often find the most success in this sport. When there’s a lack of communication or a disruption in a team’s strategic flow, opponents have better chances to take advantage time and time again. Here are tips to keep in mind that will help maintain a balanced and effective doubles partnership. 1. Consider how your shot may affect your partner. On a pickleball court things happen quickly. Although the court is relatively small, it’s easy for players to get their teammates in tough positions by not understanding what shot to hit and when. The best players know how to think one step ahead in order to protect and propel their teammates into successful outcomes. When you begin to think about your partner and aligning your gameplan to best suit both your style of play and theirs, sometimes you might have to play outside of your comfort zone. For example, under pressure your go to shot may be the lob, but it might not be the best idea to go for a lob from the back of the court while your partner and opponents have all transitioned to the kitchen line. In a scenario like this, a less than perfect execution will leave your partner helpless and vulnerable to an overhead smash. On another note, in a scenario where your partner has been pulled off the court and is in need of time to get back into position, although you may be a power player, a finesse shot, such as a soft off-paced dink into the middle portion of the kitchen might give your partner the chance to recover, while also taking the angles away from your opponents. These examples highlight the type of mindset that a player should develop to maintain balance on court. 2. Transition Together Aside from knowing how your shot selection may affect your partner, it is equally vital for pickleball doubles partners to transition in unity. Once a po int has begun, whether a team chooses to stay at the baseline, or move to the kitchen line, it is important that they do so together. Unlike tennis, strategically, remaining in a staggered formation (one up, one back) throughout an entire point is oftentimes ineffective. It is easier for opponents to spread the court and find openings when a team is staggered. Moving in unison helps to avoid creating any gaps that an opponent might try to use to their advantage! 3. TALK It’s hard to imagine effective communication taking place when there’s no speaking or signaling happening. As a team, whether you’re winning or losing, it is important to consistently regroup, reset, and reconvene after each point. In a match setting, as each player will typically observe and learn more about the opposition the longer the match goes on, it is important to notify and update your partner on the things that you’re observing that they may not be. It is equally imperative to ask your partner about any strategies that they have in mind as well. This will ensure that you and your partner remain aware and well prepared as a match progress. Maintaining ongoing communication and balance is a sure way to increase your winning percentage and get the most out of your pickleball game. Remember more than anything, always stays positive and encouraging no matter what! Having fun is what it’s all about! 18
