SOME HISTORY

Sir Stanley Rous

T

he dream of Saudi Arabi’s Makkah Region Governor, His Royal Highness Prince Khaled Al-Faisal, was to hold the first Gulf Cooperation Council Games (GCCG). It did no take long before it came true thanks to the initiatives of the Bahraini delegation who attended the Mexico City Olympics in 1968 and introduced the idea to Sir Stanley Rous, former

Fifa

president of FIFA, who supported the idea. At the time, the reasons behind the notion of a Gulf Cup were as much political as they were sporting. Bahrain was in the middle of a dispute over its borders with Iran who declared the state its 14th province, a unilateral decision rejected by Bahrain and Britain, which still ruled the Trucial States. Bahrain held the first GCCG from March 27 to April

06

3 in 1970 with the participation of four countries: Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and champion of the event Kuwait. Since then the seed was sown for what would grow to become the Gulf Cup of Nations or “Khaleeji” that we see today. Sir Stanley Rous also attended the 3rd GCCG held in Kuwait in March of 1974 which also saw Kuwait come out as champions of the tournament.

RECAP

Gulf Crisis

K

uwait has slammed a Saudi top official’s tilt at the Kuwaiti sports minister over his recent visit to Qatar, a country facing a regional isolation from Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Egypt. Kuwaiti deputy foreign minister Khaled Al-Jarallah at an event at the Indian mission in Kuwait City told reporters that he had conveyed ‘regrets and admonishment’ to the Saudi envoy to Kuwait to protest the comments made by head of Saudi Sports Committee, Turki Al-Sheikh. Turki Al-Sheikh had called the Kuwaiti Sports Minister Khalid Al-Rodhan a “mercenary’ in a tweet over his visit to Qatar last week. “We assert our rejection and astonishment at this

insult because of its impact on the warm and distinguished fraternal relations between the two sisterly countries,” Jarallah was quoted as saying by official news agency KUNA on Wednesday.

Kuwait hosted from December 22 to January 5, the Arabian Gulf Cup after the world football governing body FIFA removed its ban. Qatar accepted to hand over the organization to Kuwait.

Al-Sheikh who is also Saudi royal court adviser slammed Rodhan’s visit to Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani to thank Qatari authorities for helping get FIFA sanctions lifted last month.

Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Bahrain initially refused to attend the tournament should it be taking place in Qatar. The three in addition to Egypt have severed ties with Doha over claims that the tiny Gulf country supports terrorism.

The visit was captured and reported in media of both countries. “ This mercenary (Rodhan) will not harm Saudi Arabia’s historic relations with its sister Kuwait, and he only represents himself in what he said,” the Saudi official wrote on Twitter, describing Rodhan as a mercenary.

07

Kuwait has adopted a neutral stance in the seven-month old crisis and tried to help defuse the diplomatic row. Kuwait has adopted a firm local policy banning and punishing any sentiment that may jeopardize the country’s official position.

A

fe w w e e k s a g o, J e t S k i racing veteran Yousef Al Abdulrazzaq won first place in the Runabout GP1 first round of the UAE Jet Ski Championship. Al Abdulrazzaq has been competing for over 20 years and has won the Union Internationale Mononautique (UIM) World Championship on several occasions and at the moment is ranked first on the UIM Aquabike world ranking.

5 rounds in different cities around the world. Each round has its own championship and each racer must gather as many points from each race that adds to his tally in the overall ranking. Al Abdulrazzaq competed in 4 of the 5 races and still managed to win the title. The champion finished first in three rounds out of five hosted in Dubai, Sharjah, and Porto Cesareo. Yousef describes his last participation as excellent and explains “I only had one mechanical problem, usually my Jet breaks down twice or three times which is normal because any part of the machine can get overworked and can give up anytime. It was smooth sailing the whole time and I was ahead of my competition by a lot.

“It felt amazing! It’s a great feeling to see that your country appreciates your talent and your a c h i e v e m e n t s .” “ There was a massive response from the media, sports authority, and political authorities in Kuwait. I was received by HH the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah and HH the Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah.” He added “It is one of my proudest moments and I would not have been able to achieve it without the support of my sponsors Zain telecom, Kuwait Finance House, Kawasaki, and Gulf Cables.” LIONS WALK ALONE

BREAKING THE GUINNESS WORLD RECORD

Al Abdulrazzaq was informed of the opportunity by one of his friends who explained to him the process of being considered for a world record holder by Guinness. He explains “It’s more complicated than one may think. It took months of scrutiny and back and forth making sure that all the information that I submitted was accurate.” At that point, the record belonged to someone else who won the world championship twice and Al Abdulrazzaq had already won it

Jalil Marvin

3 times. By the time his record was approved he won another world championship title and pushed the record to 4 times. The Guinness world record holder described how he felt after his record was authenticated “It felt amazing! It’s a great feeling to see that your country appreciates your talent and your achievements. Kuwait is not good in many team sports, but they have talented athletes in certain individual sports, especially in engine sports.” Al Abdulrazzaq continues

13

The Guinness world record holder disaffiliated himself with Kuwait Sea Club (Kuwait’s official federation and governing body for water sports) around 6 years ago and since then achieved his best results. Al Abdulrazzaq describes the federation as “Outdated, unprofessional, inexperienced, and only holds you back and creates problems for everyone. I don’t need anything from them.” Al Abdulrazzaq explains “I started with Kuwait Sea Club and then I realized that I can do a lot more and they were only holding me back. Their job is to make everything easier for the rider but instead, they do the opposite and they only focus on benefiting themselves.” But it is not all rosy for Al Abdulrazzaq he explains “Once you leave the club the way I did you immediately become their enemy. I

“Outdated, unprofessional, inexperienced, holds you back, and creates problems for everyone. I d o n’ t n e e d a n y t h i n g f r o m t h e m .” once had to compete in a race in the Emirates as an Emirati racer because Kuwait Sea Club asked the competition organizers to not allow racers from Kuwait to compete if they were not racers from their club.” Unfortunately, there are certain benefits that the world champion is no longer privileged to since his disaffiliation with Kuwait Sea Club. He explains “I don’t receive the same benefits and recognition as other

Jalil Marvin

riders that are affiliated with Kuwait Sea Club. I am not allowed to apply for sports leave and must use up my personal leave at work in order to take time off from work and compete in races.” As a result, this has pushed him to quit his job and join the family business in order to create a more flexible work schedule for himself. Al Abdulrazzaq continues “Unlike other riders, I am not invited to the annual awards ceremony hosted by the Crown Prince HH Sheikh Nawaf

14

Al Ahmed Al Jaber Al Sabah and we don’t receive any recognition for our achievements, because I’m not affiliated with the club which is upsetting. I have been giving it everything in my power to represent my country the best way I can and just because I choose not to be part of an amateur and corrupted club, I am not considered an official representation of Kuwait. My achievements are the best, not just in Kuwait but in the world and I will continue to represent

fourteen

races in whichever category just, so they can receive prizes from PAS.” He concludes “I would rather be alone than be a part of the corrupted herd. End of Story”. UAE JET SKI CHAMPIONSHIP

On UAE Championship “ This year is different as all the tours have changed and they’re new to all the racers. Also, some of the Qatari racers that usually participate were banned this year due to political reasons.” Al Abdulrazzaq went on “The rules have also changed this year; the organizers have switched from American rules to European rules. Which is better for me because I am used to competing under the European rules.” A BRIGHTER FUTURE AHEAD

“It will take time, but it’s important to have an alternative t o t h e e x i s t i n g c l u b .” my country no matter how hard the barriers are.” The world champion sums up the difference by explaining “I have been racing as a solo racer for the past 6 years and I compete in the most prestigious races and categories in

Jalil Marvin

the world, and I have achieved better results than the entire Kuwait Sea Club. Whereas Kuwait Sea Club’s current policy is to participate in competitions that are not very competitive and send racers to compete in categories that are lower than their ability. Their main goal is to win as many

15

At the moment Al Abdulrazzaq is working on establishing a new club dedicated to sea sports and he’s in the process of meeting with the Minister of Youth and Sports Mr Khaled Al Roudhan. He talks about the addition that he hopes his club brings “It will take time, and it will not happen quickly. But it’s important to have an alternative to the existing club.” Al Abdulrazzaq continues “A lot of young riders join Kuwait Sea Club and leave after a short period of time because of a bad experience with the club’s administration. As a result, these riders are left to fend on their own and look for sponsors to support them. Not everyone can do that, I want to be able to offer riders another option that can do good by them.” The Jet Ski World champion also hopes to be able to host one of the world championship races in Kuwait through his new club. The Guinness world record holder is also starting his academy for the youth with his sponsor Kawasaki in order to give back to the future generations and the future of the sport in Kuwait. He will be teaching young racers the A to Z of Jet Ski racing and will help them receive a holistic education that will groom them to become future champions.

n e o f Ku wai t ’s best table tennis players winning countless medals in local and regional competitions. Mariam Baroun has recently won 2 silver medals and one bronze medal in the Arab Women Sports Tournament 2 0 1 8 ( AW S T ) h e l d i n S h a r j a h . Baroun talks to Fourteen exclusively about her latest participation and the current situation of the sport in Kuwait.

l e a d i n g u p to t h e aw s t 2018 This was the first time Mariam Baroun competes in a legitimate competition in four years. Kuwait’s table tennis players haven’t participated in any serious competition since 2012 due to the sports ban on all Kuwait sports. Baroun explains “It ’s been a long time since we participated in a real competition, we weren’t allowed to participate in the previous AWST tournament in 2016. We took part in the one before last which was 4 years ago.” She continues “4 years ago we won first place in the teams’ category and I won second place in the individuals’ category.” It wasn’t certain that Kuwait was going to be able to participate in the tournament this year either. They only heard rumours that they might be going two weeks before the competition. Baroun describes “We weren’t sure it was going to happen because of our situation with the sports ban. Suddenly we heard back the week of the competition that we are allowed to participate.” The organizing committee came to a resolution that no country would raise their flag or have their national anthem played to accommodate Kuwait ’s unique situation. “As a result, you can only imagine how unprepared we were for the competition in comparison

Jalil Marvin

to the other teams. For an example, Bahrain held training camps in Serbia to prepare them specifically for this tournament. Meanwhile, we haven’t been training for a long time” complained Baroun. She further explained “We haven’t been practising for a long time because there was simply nothing to practice for. We are banned from

21

competitions and we didn’t know we could participate in this tournament. So, the situation in our team was depressing.”

In their first match, the organizers changed the schedule moments before their match starts and the found themselves suddenly playing against Bahrain. Baroun describes “Bahrain and Kuwait have always had very close games and we usually struggle in this match. However, we beat them 3-0 and that was the first time we ever did that.” Kuwait lost their next match to Jordan but won their next two matches versus the Emirates and Saudi Arabi “In the end, we gave it

In the doubles category, Baroun played alongside Menwah Al Shammari and they won their first match against Bahrain and then lost to Jordan. Baroun and Al Shammari were left to play their last match against their fellow teammates Fatema Abdulhussain and Kefayah Al Owairdhi Kuwait’s second doubles team. Both doubles teams won third place, and everyone walked away with a bronze medal.

As for the singles category, Baroun played her first match against a young player from Bahrain and Baroun describes “I was scared from some reason, I had no idea why! I remember telling my teammate Menwah that I was scared, and she would laugh at me” Baroun continues “I lost the first set and then I would equalize. She won the second set and took the lead again! Nobody could believe it! I don’t know what was happening to me, but I got myself together and beat her in the end 4-2.” Next, Baroun played against a player from the Emirates and finished her off quickly 4-0 and qualified to the semi-final. In the final four Baroun played against her rival from Bahrain and this match is known among the players as a derby not to be missed. The match lived up to its hype and Baroun gave everyone a good show, she recalls “I was losing three sets to one and I managed to make a dramatic comeback and win 4-3! I remember as soon as the match was done the coach for the Jordanian team demanded that I get checked for steroids because my comeback was unbelievable in that game.” In the final match Baroun faced off against a player from Jordan and it was an intense final match and went down to the wire. Baroun proudly describes her performance “I was honestly surprised by my own performance. It was an amazing match and both of us played exceptionally well.” She continues “ This was the first time my mum calls me after a game and congratulates me on my performance despite losing in the final. She was very proud of my performance and the level I showed in the final match.” Although she lost the match, it wasn’t a walk in the park for the Jordanian champion “in the final set her dad took a timeout and she would hysterically complain that she couldn’t continue, and she’s done.” Baroun continues “I don’t blame her because it was

a very tense game and props to her for being able to contain her nerves and win the match. I think if it was anybody else they would have lost control of the game.” The silver medalist sums up their performance at AWST by saying “In the end, we gave it our all and I’m proud of our team and myself. I was a little upset because I have won second place in this competition twice before and this is my third time. I was so close to winning gold this time and I wasted some easy points. I hope that one day I can win the gold medal in this competition.”

Our coach is our hero, he goes above and beyond for us and has never let us down. If it wasn’t for him we wouldn’t have rackets, uniforms, and we wouldn’t even know about other competitions.” As for the club, they haven’t done anything for us but embarrass us in the competition. For an example, the club’s table tennis head of delegation didn’t attend most of our games and in the final day of the competition she arrived halfway through the final and would yell while we were playing which is inappropriate and embarrassing because you can’t cheer while the point is still not finished. DON’T BE GUTTED! Written by Faisal Al Shawa | Founder of Believe Nutrition

It’s not what you eat. It’s about what’s eating you.”

Gut health is so important. It’s the core to a healthy body and mind, ironically speaking. It’s true though. Keeping your gut strong and healthy will play a major part to your health. Why, you may ask? Well for starters, the gut is host to trillions of bacteria in our body, meaning, most of the bacteria in our body is found in the gut. From an immune point of view, 70% of our immune system is found in the digestive system. So, a healthy gut will lead to a healthy body, leaving you fit, strong and at low risk of get sick. Mentally, science now shows a clear link between the gut and the mind – otherwise known as the Enteric Nervous system. Think about this for a second, have you ever felt butterflies in your stomach because you

were nervous? Perhaps had no appetite while stressed? That’s right, it’s because of the gut-brain link! With this is mind, 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. Serotonin is the happy chemical, so the healthier your gut is, the more of a positive impact it will have on your mind, helping reduce stress and anxiety while also improving the clarity of your mind and your mood and emotions. What’s more? Well we know our gut digests the food we eat. Of course, the better we can digest food, the more nutrients we can actually absorb from the food itself, helping us get the daily vitamins and minerals and essential nutrients we need to stay healthy. So, again, taking care of your gut will improve your digestive system, helping your gut absorb and distribute nutrients throughout your body.

30

Having said all this, there are certainly some foods you can eat to improve your gut health. Kefir, yogurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, miso, banana, oatmeal, garlic, asparagus, berries, onion, flax and chia seeds and apples are all good sources of ‘good bacteria’ (pre and pro-biotics) which will help strengthen and improving your gut function and health. I’m sure you must have gone through some sort of abdominal pain, bloating or discomfort at some point in your life. And I’m sure it wasn’t pleasant. On the other hand, you’ve must have also experienced days where you have a flat stomach and just feel light. When you compare the two feelings, it’s a no brainer to want to consistency feel light and comfortable all the time. And that’s enough of a motivation to keep your gut strong and healthy. Good health starts with gut health, believe me.
