Nabeel Maloul because he gave me my first chance and believed in my talent The most underrated athlete in Kuwait? Al Arabi defender Ahmed Ibrahim, it’s not because he plays for the same club as I do. But I think he deserves a bigger chance because of his work ethic and the extra hours he puts in after or before practice. Who is the best attacker that you have played against? Bader Al Mutawa, because he is very smart and Feras Al Khateeb who I consider one of the best attackers in the region.
A sport you dislike watching or playing? I would never turn on the TV and watch a volleyball match. As for a sport I dislike playing it would be basketball, I would enjoy watching it more than playing it. What scared you most as a child? THE K A R AT E TWINS have won countless medals locally and internationally and are now preparing themselves to qualify to the Tokyo Olympics 2020. This would be the first t i m e Ka rate i s i nt ro d u c e d to the summer Olympic games and Mohammed and Salman refuse to miss this chance. But like most athletes in Kuwait, the Karate twins have to prepare to face their opponents in the sport and also navigate an unsupportive and difficult local sports system that creates never-ending hurdles for its athletes. WKF KARATE 1 SERIES IN SHANGHAI Winning the WKF Karate 1 Series in Shanghai was no easy task. This competition is one of the toughest in their schedule because it’s a part of the world series and carries points for the Tokyo Olympics 2020. Prior to this competition, they participated in the World Karate Championships in Madrid and it was their biggest competition of the year. The Karate twins spent two years preparing for this competition but unfortunately, they were not able to win a medal and crashed out in the second round to the host nation Spain. T h ey we re ve r y d i s a p p o i nte d and surprised by the early exit in Madrid because not only have they beaten the Spanish team before, but they also performed better than them in this competition. As a result, they shifted all their focus and placed all their hopes on winning the WKF Karate 1 Series in Shanghai and ending the year on a good note.

The lack of support from the KKF has forced athletes to play the role of administrators, and coaches, because if they don’t get it done, nobody else will.
The competition in Shanghai had a very competitive list of participants including 4 teams from Japan and the same Spanish team that eliminated them from the competition in Madrid. They beat China in the first round, Japan in the second round, Italy in the semi-final, and another Japanese team in the final round. It wasn’t an easy road to the final and they had to beat some of the best teams in the world to win the gold medal. It was a special moment

for them because it ’s the first competition they participated in since the sports ban was lifted on the Kuwait Olympic Committee and the Karate twins were able to compete under the Kuwaiti flag. NAVIGATING LOCAL CORRUPTION AND POLITICS The Karate twins flew to China with the pressure of making up for their early exit in Spain weighing

down on them and frustrated by the lack of support by the Kuwait Karate Federation (KKF). Although they were participating under the Kuwaiti flag and the KKF is supposed to pay for all their expenses, but Mohammed and Salman funded their entire trip out of their own pockets. The KKF promised that they would pay for their participation in the WKF Karate 1 Series in Shanghai but kept on delaying the process until the last day when the Karate twins

had no choice but to take matters into their own hands. Aside from failing to fund their trip the KKF didn’t apply for the national team’s official sports leave from the Public Authority for Sports (PAS). Mohammed and Salman were again left with no choice but to do it on their own. The lack of support from the KKF has forced athletes to play more than just the role of an athlete, they also have to be administrators and coaches because if they don’t get it done nobody else will. Unlike regular athletes in the world, Mohammed and Salman are left worrying before going to bed about approving their sports leave from PAS, booking their own flights and hotels, their post-game recovery, their education, and of course the actual competition. Moreover, to make things worse the national team has been traini n g fo r m o nt h s w i t h o u t t h e i r co a c h b e ca u s e h e i s st u c k i n Turkey waiting for a work visa to come to Kuwait. The KKF refused to pay for their coach to travel to Shanghai and the national team paid for their coach’s trip. They are simply baffled by the fact that they are able to win gold medals in such a toxic and demotivating environment. While Mohammed and Salman are practicing day and night trying to qualify to the biggest sporting event in the world the KKF are too lazy to move a muscle. The KKF provides no support, no funding, and struggle to provide a coach who lives in the same country. Meanwhile, the Karate twins are facing teams from Japan, Italy, and Spain who are full-time athletes and have multiple coaches, nutritionists, a team masseuse, a sports psychologist, and the whole nine yards.

To Mohammed and Salman they practice and work hard like professional athletes and win gold medals in world championships but no amount of medals or hard work will ever change the way the KKF views them. To the KKF they are considered amateurs having fun and they will never treat them as the serious athletes and champions that they are. They are left to fend for their own alongside individuals who support them such as Saqer Al Mulla (deputy director of PAS), their professors at the American University of Kuwait, and last but definitely not least their parents. “
After studying the Asian situation well, and how many votes we can get in the voting process to expel the Zionist entity, we set two timelines for the expulsion,” Ahmad al-Sadoun, former president of the Kuwaiti parliament and former head of the Kuwaiti Football Association. “The first opportunity will be in the meeting scheduled in Tehran in 1974, in the event that all the Arab associations joined the AFC, the second opportunity will be in the Congress of Kuala Lumpur scheduled in 1976.” Mr. Ahmed Al Sadoun and the late Barak Al Marzouq toured 14 Asian countries within 12 days shortly before the Asian Congress in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, scheduled for August 22, 1976. Al-Sadoun deprived them from attending the Asian Congress. He contacted the Malaysian Ambassador to Kuwait when he was the vice president of the Kuwaiti Parliament, “I invited the Malaysian Ambassador to parliament, and at the beginning of my conversation I thanked him and his country for all their noble stance in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I told him that we would like him to prevent their country from allowing the Zionists from entering Malaysia to attend the Congress. The Malaysian government complied with our wishes and refused to grant him a visa.”
their representative was prevented from attending. They knew that Ahmad Al-Sadoun was the one who was behind it and expressed in their telegram that “Israel played football before him, and will play after him.” Al-Sadoun said that after the vote to expel Israel from Asia was passed in the congress, FIFA’s president was angered by their decision and threatened to boycott the AFC and suspend its activity. Ultimately, the situation calmed and the FIFA president, João Havelange, eventually came to the realization that he was voted in as president of FIFA with the help of the Asian and African federations. “Havelange paid us back the debt of supporting him during the FIFA elections.”

WEIGHT LOSS TIPS AND TRICKS Written by Faisal Al Shawa | Founder of @BelieveNutrition
N
utrition discussions appear to be at the crossroads for both fat and weight loss. There’s nothing in more demand than finding ways to lose weight. While my goal is to help you reach your desired goals, including weight, my philosophy revolves around allowing you to understand your body in order for you to lose weight the right way. With that being said, here are a few things to consider when going on your weight loss journey: FOCUS ON WHAT IS BEING LOST When it comes to weight loss, people tend to focus more on how much weight is being lost rather than what is being lost. Weight loss may result from fat and/or muscle loss. For me, losing weight the proper way means losing weight from fat, rather than muscle. Indeed, the last thing you want is to lose muscle!
1
INCREASE YOUR PROTEIN INTAKE So, if you want to lose weight more from fat rather muscle, how can you do so? The answer is to increase your protein intake. To lose weight, you need to be put your body in a calorie

deficit, meaning burning more calories than you’re actually taking in. Of course, when your body is in a calorie deficit, surely you may lose fat, but a loss of muscle is also contributing to that weight lost. To preserve your muscles, increase your daily protein intake. After all, that is one of the many purposes that protein serves to do. Include high-quality protein sources within your diet, including chicken, beef, fish, eggs and dairy products (i.e. milk and yogurt). YOU CAN’T OUTRUN A BAD DIET Don’t solely rely on either nutrition or exercise to do the job for you – you need a good balance between proper nutrition and frequent exercise. Research has shown that effective weight loss occurs as a result of the combination of a good diet and regular exercise. Don’t think you can eat what you want because you’re exercising daily. And don’t assume you don’t need to exercise because you are eating well. It’s a combination of both that achieves weight loss.
3
EAT NUTRIENT DENSE FOOD While on a calorie deficit, it may be easy for you to lose out on essen-

tial nutrients needed to keep your body running efficiently since you’re not consuming as much food. Given this, it is really important to think of the food content you are eating, more specifically consuming nutrient-dense food, or foods which are high in essential nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber etc…This will help keep your immune system boosted during a period of time which may otherwise put your body in stress. There you have it, weight loss tips and tricks that will allow you to reach your desired weight goal in the most efficient manner possible. It’s so important to understand the mechanisms of how your body works. Doing so will give you the ability to properly manipulate your nutrition and other aspects of your lifestyle for the better. I know weight loss may be a frustrating journey, especially if you want to lose a lot of weight in a short period of time. Believe me, though, all it takes is patience and understanding of what you need to do and you will most certainly get there.
