n a celebration of self love, expression and Mary Jane, the ladies and gentlemen of the Bat City Bombshells present Austin, Texas with the gift of freedom despite laws of prohibition. In the bustling heart of Texas, my feet met a trail of glitter that led me into the home of Sherry Bomb – Award-Winning burlesque performer, costumer and the incomparable leader of the Bat City Bombshells. When I walked in the door I was greeted by dogs, smiles, the scent of dank bud and home cooked fajitas. These were my kind of people! 420 was around the corner, and I got the chance to sit down with one of Austin’s premiere burlesque troupes, The Bat City Bombshells, to talk about their upcoming show entitled “Dancing with Mary Jane.” This show was to be an ode to Austin, Texas’ ever-present weed culture – a way to “break the stigma” says Sherry. The troupe is comprised of men and women of all different shapes, sizes, styles and voices. It made for a palpable creative energy that fueled dress rehearsal. I watched the performers express themselves through dance and strip tease with a beautiful venerability you can always expect from burlesque. No matter if they used comedy, choreographed dance, sex, or silliness to tell their story, each performer expressed a unique take on 420 culture. I couldn’t wait to find out more about this cheeky, Texas born, cannabis loving troupe!

F&N For those who aren’t familiar, what is burlesque? And more importantly, what does it mean to you? Calizoria By definition burlesque is the art of strip tease, but for me, it is the art of showing people what the body can do without limits. Men and women from 18-80 can do burlesque and it is always something new! Nina Josephine The beauty of burlesque is that there are no rules. People can be whoever they dreamed of being, and own who they are. Burlesque empowers you to be the most kick-ass version of yourself. Rosy Ravish For me, burlesque is about body acceptance and celebration. After a lifetime of hating my body, burlesque is my way of practicing self love. On that stage you can be sexy and desirable no matter what size, shape, or gender you are. F&N Describe your creative process. Is Cannabis involved? Holli Lolli Yes! Cannabis allows me to open up my mind to the music. It allows me to be free and search for the story I want to tell. If I’m not at work, I am smoking and dancing! Sherry Bomb I always like to create an outline of the routine sober, then use cannabis to play freely and without abandon. And we have a rule in this troupe - You must perform how you rehearse. Gem De La Creme Cannabis helps me push myself to take my ideas to the next level. When my self doubt is erased I am allowed to be much more creative.

F&N Why a 420 Show? Sherry Bomb Why not?! Austin loves weed, and to ignore that would be to ignore a large portion of the community. Also, with this show we are trying to normalize something that shouldn’t be seen as scary or evil. Calizoria My questions is - Why are we the only ones doing this? This show allows us to reach out to a broader audience of people who might not know what burlesque is, but have used cannabis.

“ lso, with this show we are trying to normalize something that shouldn’t be seen as scary or evil.” Rosy Ravish Weed makes me feel sexy! It also brought me to this wonderful group of people and into the world of burlesque. I met Sherry at a weed happy hour downtown and the rest is history. I want to celebrate that!

All of the hard work and joint rolling paid off on April 15 at the North Door - a familiar venue to the Austin burlesque community. I watched from the back of a packed house while MC Aura Vega introduced each high energy act to a rowdy and joyus audience. Using comedy, sex appeal, glitter and a life-sized blunt doll, the Bat City Bombshells brought down the house and left me with a contact high I felt for the rest of the night.

JETT CANNABIS Jett has taken a craft, small batch approach to cannabis extraction and, in turn, developed a truly remarkable end product. Jett’s pure, uncut CO2 oil has zero additives and is made up of cannabis only components including cannabinoids, terpenes, esters and all natural plant compounds. When you purchase Jett Cannabis products you can be sure that there is no PG, PeG, MCT, outside terpenes or other proprietary blends. The Ceramic-Coil™ atomizer’s wickless technology allows for this pure, viscous oil to be perfectly vaporized each and every time. Jett’s CO2 oil is tested every batch for a full spectrum of cannabinoids and terpenes, and sees fantastic results and effects that vary from strain to strain. Summer Fox, Lexi Edmonds reports that the pen is as convenient as it is satisfying. Heavy users, like Lexi, say that the pen lasted a full week - even with sharing! Jett’s effects are delightful and subtle, which makes this pen perfect for the recreational user. jettcannabis.com

n the wake of tragedy, members of the LGBTQ+ community reflect on the history and future of Pride Celebration. The LGBTQ+ community has made remarkable strides towards equality over the past 50 years and counting.
For the LGBTQ+ community, pride in this sense, is rightfully deserved. For many, Pride is a public display of the love that this community radiates for one another. It is standing in the face of adversity unafraid and holding your head high, something that this community has done with poise and dignity. The nation’s first parade, held in June of 1970, commemorated the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall riots. During this weeklong uprising between the NYC police and the city’s youth, the LGBTQ+ brought their civil rights movement into the national spotlight.
The fight for the most basic human rights reaches back to the iconic Stonewall movements of 1964 - a tipping point for LGBTQ+ liberation in the United States. In that pivoting moment, the LGBTQ+ community was brought together by those legendary Riots in a way they had never experienced before.
Pride has since turned into a month long celebration across the country in the month of June - each Pride celebration bringing its unique feel to the community. That being said, there is no “correct” way to celebrate pride and one should not look down upon another for expressing themselves differently, even within the LGBTQ+ community.
Marches, riots, and the fight for freedom were led by sex workers and LGBTQ+ members of all shapes, sizes, and color- many of them still fighting for those same rights today.
“If people are able to love themselves unconditionally, they are able to go out into the world and love others with the same perspective…” explains Joe Wenninger (Milwaukee, Wisconsin).
Though the road has been a tough one, this remarkable community has changed hearts, opened eyes, and rallied together to over come obstacles that their brothers and sisters before them only dream t of demolishing.
From San Francisco to New York, LGBTQ+ members and allies ban together to show the world that it pride is something that should be instilled in every human being. They demonstrate that they are proud of who they are, that they are still making strides towards equality, and most importantly, they are still queer.
Members of this community have life experiences those on the outside cannot begin to comprehend. They have been tormented, bullied, and degraded… yet, somehow have managed to utilize these rough patches in life to make something great emerge from their struggles. The LGBTQ+ community has used their experiences to mold themselves into human beings that not only have pride in themselves, but also for their community and what they stand for.
“It is the most liberating feeling in the world and I implore all to take pride of who and what they are,” says Jacob Riojas (Memphis, Tennessee), “But to also respect the prid of others and see their pride as admirable even if it is not what you pride yourself in”. Pride is easily one of the most loving and carefree environments you could ever find yourself in. As
SUMMER 2016 • FOX & NUG 36
members of the LGBTQ+ community, we know the sting of adversity and in turn, welcome all to this glorious celebration of love. Though you may not be an LGBTQ+ member you can be an ally to those around you. Fight for your brothers and sisters and show the world that love over comes adversity, but respect their struggle and recognize it as something other than your own. “The fact we live in a time where we can have this parade freely and without (generally) fear being hurt speaks volumes to the progress that America, and the world, has made” says Amy Payne (Atlanta, Georgia). “Pride shows the LGBTQ+ community and other communities that you can and should be who you are, and that you are never alone.” One of the largest triumphs for the LGBTQ+ community came in the summer of 2015. Under the leadership of President Barack Obama, same sex marriage was finally legalized in the United States, bringing a sense of hope and accomplishment to the LGBTQ+ community across the nation. Though many individuals still scoff at the decision and claim that the community has finally “gotten what they’ve asked for”. Yet, Wenninger makes a valid point in his interview stating “Something that cannot be denied is that the largest group benefiting from this progression has been white, cisgendered gay or lesbian people.” “The progression we saw from legalized gay marriage was from the grassroots efforts in each state,” says Nage Gibson-Thompson (Atlanta, Georgia). “The LGBTQ+ community can only keep moving forward.” Moving forward from this point is not as easy as one would expect it to be in such an “accepting” time in today’s society. On June 12, 2016, a lone gunman attacked a gay nightclub in Orlando, injuring 53 and claiming 49 lives. This
37 FOX & NUG • SUMMER 2016
gut-wrenching tragedy has become one of the largest mass killings in Unites States history and demonstrates the blatant hatred that still exists in the hearts of many across the nation. As soon as word of the attack reached national news outlets early the next morning, individuals were quick to jump to conclusions about the shooters motivations. Islamic extremist and gun control were key words that could be seen thrown across social media platforms but none of that mattered. What mattered were the lives lost, the LGBTQ+ community, and the respect and solidarity they needed from the rest of the nation at the time.
T
“ his act of terror has only brought the community together more. ” “This act of terror has only brought the community together more.” Said Riojas when asked his opinion on the matter, “We all heavily mourn the meaningless loss of our brothers and sisters in the Orlando shooting, but we will not allow their deaths to be in vain”. The Orlando Pulse shooting may have taken away precious and irreplaceable beings, but it has given the LGBTQ+ community a new found sense of togetherness. The situation has awakened a fire in its members and allies that has been subsided by some due to recent victories and it has shown us that the fight for equality is NOT over. “LGBTQ+ people in more oppressive countries, LGBTQ+ people of color, people who are trans, and many others in this community are still enduring inequality, micro- aggressions, and death for simply
living and loving true to themselves” said Wenninger. Transgender women are being murdered faster than any other group in the nation, safe sex prevention tactics are slacking in today’s queer youth populations, and half of the United States does not have the common decency to let someone urinate in a bathroom they feel comfortable in. So the question remains, where does the LGBTQ+ community go from here? I believe the answer is staring us in the face. We must continue to do what members of the community and its allies have done for years. Look to your predecessors for an example- they conjured up enough strength to chain themselves to the White House fence and say that they have had enough. We must raise hell through activism and the sharing of knowledge. These powerful events happened in the past with great success and with effort and determination they can succeed once more. I encourage you to write to your government both on a local and national level to make changes, believe it or not there is strength in solidarity. People must realize that the LGBTQ+ community are their mothers, fathers, brothers, sisters, neighbors, and above all human beings. Get involved and be the generation of people that sees one another as human beings. LBGTQ+ community lives hold so much value, and the fight for them will go on until every last voice is heard.

It isn’t a party without a little bud. Not sure which presidential candidate has your green interests at heart? We’ve got you covered.
Hillary Clinton
of New Mexico, Gary was the highest-ranking public official to advocate for marijuana legalization.
Hillary is kind of here, kind of there, and if you live in Colorado or Washington, kind of just wants to watch you smoke for a while to see how weird you get. But don’t get too paranoid. She appears to have decent intentions.
Himself a fan of taffy-esque edibles called “Cheeba Chews,” Gary supports federal legalization of cannabis and taking it off the schedule entirely—the drug schedule, duh. Gary argues that weed is safer than alcohol (you know, because it is), and notes that marijuana users are the people we interact with every day. Thankfully, he’s not making us look stupid either. Gary believes that, like alcohol, weed should be regulated, taxed and lawfully enforced.
Democrat
For now, Hillary seems all about—though we aren’t really sure what that looks like—researching the awesomeness (our words, not hers) of marijuana for medical use. She’ll only go so far as to call it anecdotal evidence, but recognizes that cannabis has been shown to have benefits for cancer treatment, chronic diseases, and pain. To actually get that research done, Hillary wants to reclassify marijuana from a Schedule I to a Schedule II drug. Ultimately, she wants empower states to make their own weed policies and, in the meantime, doesn’t want anyone to go to prison for using it. When asked if she developed a stronger position on legalization for recreational (a.k.a. “adult”) use after observing Colorado and Washington after a year, Hillary unfortunately said, “No.” Okay, Hillary. Just keep watching us. And let us know if you need any help with that research.
Before running for president, Gary left an enviable job as CEO of Cannabis Sativa Inc., a Nevada-based medical marijuana company. So maybe they have an open position now?
Bernie Sanders Democrat
Bernie is pretty damn reasonable. Not shy about his criticism of the war on drugs and particularly how it’s enforced, Bernie is in favor of allowing states to legalize marijuana for medical and recreational use. But, with other drugs on his mind, he’s still just a little wary about recreational marijuana.
Libertarian
Not too wary, though. In 2016’s first Democratic presidential debate, Bernie said he would vote “yes” if he were a Nevada voter weighing in legalization of marijuana for recreational use.
Gary wanted to make it legal long before making it legal was cool. In 1999, as Republican governor
Bernie also wants to remove weed from the drug schedule, both allowing states to regulate it like alcohol

and giving cannabusinesses what they currently don’t have: access to banking services and the ability to apply for standard tax deductions. Most importantly, perhaps, Bernie recognizes that the criminalization of weed is, yep, destroying lives. It’s that fact, he says, that would likely make him vote to legalize marijuana statewide. So Bernie himself is feeling the proverbial...nevermind.
Jill Stein
Green Party Jill Stein is a member of the Green party. The green party. To Jill, marijuana legalization would be, in her words, “a huge win for freedom and social justice.” In our words, “Fuck. Yes.” A medical doctor and a public health advocate, Jill is emphatic that weed is dangerous—insofar as where it’s illegal and reserved for the underground drug economy. It’s Jill’s belief that marijuana legalization would reduce crime and prison populations, increase tax revenue, allow farmers to farm, and enable sick people to access their medicine.
Department to stop harassing and prosecuting marijuana-related medical clinics that are operating under their own state laws. She also wants to move weed from a Schedule I drug to a “more appropriate category.” Lylas, Jill.
Donald Trump Republican
Donald Trump. Because we can’t just...not. In 1990, Donald was in favor of legalizing all drugs. More recently, he’s not in favor of marijuana for recreational use, but also not not in favor of it, either. Calling marijuana a “big thing,” Donald believes that it should be a “state issue, state-by-state.” He seems to strongly support (for now) legal access to medical marijuana, but given the big-thingness of it, wants to leave recreational use up to individual states. And us? We just want to American Grape Ape again. Or, you know, for the first time.
If elected President, Jill says she’d make one of her first actions to order the DEA and Justice
