MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
A Letter from Becky Bartoszek As I reflect on the past months, I am in awe of the human spirit and our ability to adapt. The uncertainties of the coronavirus have placed unique demands on our daily lives. None of us could have anticipated all the challenges we now face, including those that accompany working from home amidst a pandemic. With the increase in remote workspaces, our work lives are now unavoidably intertwined with our personal lives, as we spend our days navigating childcare, remote learning, noisy pets, limited workspaces and so much more. While this new environment continues to be a source of uncertainty and confusion, it is good to remember that we are all in this together. During the month of August, your Fox Cities Chamber conducted our annual Fox Cities Employer Benefit Survey. The goal of that survey and this publication is threefold: to gauge the competitiveness of our current benefit landscape in the Fox Cities; to inspire employers to brainstorm ways they can improve the employee experience; and to highlight how Fox Cities employers have effectively adapted throughout this pandemic. Although the coronavirus has been a tremendous challenge, it has also uncovered opportunity. Organizations have adapted and changed their workplace in order to create a safer and healthier environment for their employees. To accommodate the adjusted work environment, many employers have reviewed their benefit offerings. Nearly all the employers responding to the survey reported that they changed workplace benefits and policies. Not surprisingly, employers implemented flexible schedules and remote work options to accommodate safety and health of employees as well as working parents. If you are interested in learning ways to enhance the work/life integration of your employees, I encourage you to reach out to us to learn more about our Fox Cities Employee Friendly Workplace Initiative. This talent retention and attraction program encourages the adoption of more employee friendly workplace practices and policies through a certification tool. We hope the information contained in this publication is enlightening and inspiring. Together, through understanding and compassion, we can make the Fox Cities region a place where employers have loyal, hardworking talent, and employees strive to work each and every day.
Best Regards.
Becky Bartoszek President/CEO Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce and Regional Partnership

SURVEY METHODOLOGY & RESPONDENTS
Methodology In August of 2020, the Fox Cities Chamber and Regional Partnership conducted its annual survey of employers to gather information regarding the type of benefits offered to employees. The survey explores what types of employee benefits organizations are offering, including health, wellness, leave, flexibility, retirement and career and other employee friendly workplace benefits. Although the survey is not statistically significant, it is intended to provide human resource professionals with data and regional insights into the current benefit landscape.
Wisconsin including: New North, Fox Valley SHRM, NEW Manufacturing Alliance, United Way Fox Cities, Child Care Resource & Referral, First Five Fox Valley as well as economic development organizations and chambers throughout Northeast Wisconsin.
The 223-question survey was administered and distributed by the Fox Cities Regional Partnership, the economic development division of the Fox Cities Chamber. The geographic scope of distribution extended beyond the Fox Cities (Calumet, Outagamie and northern Winnebago Counties) to include all Northeast Wisconsin counties.
Coronavirus has significantly impacted the workplace in 2020. At the time of the survey, the future of the workplace remained a prominent question. Many continue to adapt, innovate and respond. For that reason, the survey included three coronavirus-specific questions. The intent was to gain some clarity around employers’ plans for increased, decreased or sustained benefits.
Collectively, the survey received 209 respondents representing a wide variety of industry sectors, company sizes and revenues. Respondents reported having a single operation in one county as well as multiple operations in more than one county across Northeast Wisconsin.
Survey distribution was maximized with the support of numerous partners across Northeast

EMPLOYEE FRIENDLY WORKPLACE INITIATIVE
Enhancing work-life balance integration Launched in 2019, the Fox Cities Employee Friendly Workplace Initiative is focused on enhancing work/ life integration for all employees by encouraging the adoption of more employee friendly workplace practices and policies. It is a collaborative effort between businesses and community organizations, led by the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce, for the primary purpose of creating a supportive work environment in order to attract and retain top talent in the region. When the global pandemic blurred the boundaries between work and life, the struggle to manage it all seemed unattainable. The demands of family life increased substantially while the work world changed into a virtual all-access pass. Now more than ever, a supportive work environment is essential for employee wellbeing. Employers must make accommodations for family responsibilities in order to sustain a thriving, productive work environment that is truly employee friendly. Employers eager to support employees on their journey towards work/life integration can leverage the Fox Cities Employee Friendly Workplace Certification. The certification is used as a tool to create and/or enhance a supportive work environment. Essentially, an employee friendly workplace improves the overall employee wellbeing while retaining top talent and gaining a competitive advantage. Employers who adopt more employee friendly workplace practices and policies could see a reduction in turnover and absenteeism as well as an increase in presenteeism and loyalty. The following information includes definitions and criteria information for Employee Friendly Workplace Certification. CHILD CARE CHALLENGES
Working with Child Care Challenges When the pandemic hit in March, child care facilities and schools closed, transforming how employees worked and lived, and disrupting schedules at home. Most families recognized that juggling remote work and home responsibilities for an extended period of time was not sustainable. Unfortunately, in fall 2020, COVID-19 cases were fluctuating, and schools returned to virtual learning forcing many parents to make difficult child care decisions. The current crisis has prompted employees and employers alike to seek unique solutions for child care including, learning pods, tutors, technology platforms and care groups. Despite potential solutions, women, in particular, are making the difficult choice to leave the workforce. According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, 860,000 women dropped out of the labor force in September. Furthermore, one in four women are considering leaving the workforce or downshifting careers due to the COVID-19 crisis. (Women in the Workplace, 2020) Child care must not be one of the greatest barriers for working parents. An employer can offer creative child care solutions to support employees through the COVID-19 pandemic as well as after the pandemic. However, the key to a supportive workplace is asking what your employees need. Regardless of the COVID-19 pandemic, a flexible work arrangement is essential for any working parent. In September, Ariens Company announced that construction was beginning on the Brillion Early Learning Center, a new child care facility located 11

near their headquarters. Leadership at the Ariens Company recognized that investment in child care is crucial to retention and attraction of employees and families. Access to an on-site child care facility offers working parents a vital solution to securing convenient, affordable and reliable child care. This is just one example of how employers are actively engaging in supporting their employees by offering new child care benefit options. Now more than ever, employers have experienced child care issues which have only been magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT - WERNER ELECTRIC SUPPLY
Remaining True to the “Werner Way Werner Electric Supply is a people-first company. Employees are always first, which has become evident now more than ever. One of the inaugural certified companies in the Fox Cities Employee Friendly Workplace Initiative, Werner has gained a new perspective on how to identify opportunities that better support employees and their families.
for a majority of employees was offered and pursued, and new technology was implemented to accommodate the needs of these employees. There was still a small handful of roles that required onsite work in which we provided extra compensation through an Attendance Appreciation Program.
With focus on this new perspective, we have been able to lay a foundation to build upon when combating countless struggles resulting from the unexpected COVID-19 crisis. This unprecedented time has put the team to the ultimate test of living up to being an employee friendly workplace.
A crucial priority to Werner has been, and continues to be, the health and safety of our employees and their families. As a result, we rolled out a COVID-19 Plan and Guidelines policy which included detailed steps to follow if employees experience symptoms or have been exposed; what steps to take if employees are unable to work due to childcare needs; travel reporting and quarantine requirements and visitor expectations.
We assembled a COVID-19 Task Force in which a detailed response plan was created in order to become well-versed in the ever-changing CDC guidelines. We immediately offered two additional weeks of paid benefit time to provide some peace of mind to employees in the event they were unable to work due to circumstances as a result of COVID-19. distancing; and with the help of our counter teams, we were able to quickly move to curbside pickup to continue to support our customers’ needs, as well as provide safety to our employees and customers. have 24/7 access to this free and confidential service. We’ve offered virtual lunch-and-learn opportunities on topics such as mental health and ergonomics in the home office environment. Employees also have the option to participate in virtual wellness challenges by linking their fitness tracking devices to our online wellness platform.
Another commitment was accommodating employees’ schedules as the routines of our employees and their families were quickly broken due to schools and childcare providers shutting down. For many, this difficult time brought feelings of anxiousness and being overwhelmed. We implemented a Flex-Time Guidelines policy to allow additional flexibility for our employees as well as guidance for our leaders. And through this, the Werner community became more united than ever. We were forced to be vulnerable and rely on one another in a way we never have before. The leadership and human resources teams worked closely with employees on their specific situations with empathy, flexibility and creativity to find collaborative solutions for each employee. Approximately 75% of our employees abruptly transitioned to work remotely and continue to have the option to work remotely.
Werner has been supportive to employees adapting to this “new norm” in a healthy way. It is important to Werner that employees feel empowered to manage their time and avoid unnecessary stress when it comes to expectations around responsiveness. If employees are tied up with another task or a different call, it is okay to answer the message when employees have the time. Furthermore, we do not want employees to constantly feel that they have to be tied to their chair. Employees are encouraged to take occasional breaks and to not feel guilty about it.
Through this, the Werner community became more united than ever.
In addition to safety and flexible work schedules, we have maintained many of the perks of being a Werner employee but in a virtual capacity. We continue to keep our Recognition Program alive by using our online recognition platform, Kudos. The Werner Executive Team recently mailed out vouchers to the Werner apparel store along with a handwritten thank you card expressing their appreciation to each employee in their functional area. Even though our team is not physically together, it’s important for employees to still feel that sense of belonging and know they are valued. Through all the chaos, we also aim to keep our Wellness Program strong. Werner continues to offer education and tools to support the health and wellness of our employees. We regularly promote our EAP benefit and continue to ensure employees 15

Werner has not missed a beat in offering growth and development opportunities virtually. Werner’s mentorship program, leadership training programs, and Diversity and Inclusion Initiative have gone uninterrupted. Virtual meetings and trainings have actually proven to be quite efficient and productive. The Werner team has and continues to proudly live up to being a certified Fox Cities Employee Friendly Workplace throughout the COVID-19 crisis. An ongoing focus as we get to a new normal will be culture preservation and remaining true to our unique “Werner Way” culture.
