LEADERSHIP Fox Cities A program of the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Inc.
21st Anniversary
It has been our honor as a steering committee, to try our very best to create meaningful experiences for you throughout the year. As class speaker for the 2009 class, I spoke about how the Leadership Fox Cities experience is analogous to an ice cream shop. Within that shop, the steering committee works together to create the best possible flavors and ambience for your satisfaction. Our ultimate hope is that we created flavors and an environment that motivates you to want to revisit and assist the Fox Cities in the future. Take what you have learned, dive in and pay it forward. Best wishes and continued success to all your endeavors

Class Quote: "I am personally convinced that one person can be a change catalyst, a "transformer" in any situation, any organization. Such an individual is yeast that can leaven an entire loaf. It requires vision, initiative, patience, respect, persistence, courage, and faith to be a transforming leader." Stephen R. Covey

Go Green with the Boys & Girls Club Team Members: Barb Bassing, Melody Buller, Sandy Fontecchio, Roxanne Helmich, Theresa Lehman, Brian Olesen, Chris Weber Objective: Collaborate with Boys & Girls Club of the Fox Cities to provide positive, environmentally-focused education and experiences. We are providing a six-week sustainable education program that will educate, engage, and inspire the children to make a positive difference in their personal lives and in the community.
Outcome/Impact: Our project is aimed at making a difference in the lives of children as it relates to the “Learning” and “Natural Environment” factors of the newly released Fox Cities Life Study. As a project team, we are presenting the six-week session to 12 students at BGC. Once completed, the students will graduate and then help BGC staff present the program to future classes of students.

The Building for Kids Main Office Renovation Plan Team Members: Jamie Brown, Kristina Flores, Jerimiah Janssen, Tammy Ladwig, Sue Pawlowski and Jen Wagner Mauk Objective: To educate children on the importance of charitable giving, learn about specific non-profit organizations in downtown Appleton, and to create/foster life-long enthusiasm about giving back to their community. Outcome/Impact: The final product will be a self-guided tour, “The Giving ME Adventure”, highlighting nine non-profit organizations in downtown Appleton. The children will pick up a map and passport at the Building for Kids Children’s Museum (BFK) and receive a sticker for their passport at each non-profit they visit. Upon completion of the tour, the child will return to the BFK to collect their prize- a piggy bank to encourage them to save to help others. This tour will also be offered as an activity in conjunction with an educational class on philanthropy offered by the BFK in their programming for next fall and winter and be posted on the BFK website for anyone to download and use. Objective: To create a renovation master plan for The Building for Kids main office that is creative, innovative and welcoming to reflect the energy and design of the Museum’s front-of-house public spaces. The new space will be functional, whimsical and engaging through the utilization of bright colors as well as flexible and creative work spaces to stimulate minds and inspire innovation. We selected this project because it was creative and community-focused but still had concrete start-to-finish expectations within our timeline and with a tangible outcome.
Outcome/Impact: Our final renovation master plan, created in collaboration with Nordon Business Environments, will include a needs assessment, gap analysis (current vs. future state), proposed design with functionality overview and anticipated budget for the new office space. This plan will serve as the blueprint for the renovation after an appropriate timeline is set by The Building for Kids team.

Project Title:
The Gardens of the Fox Cities – “Garden to Gourmet : A Sustainable Dinner for a Sustainable Future” Team Members: Matthew Baumler, Karri Bedor, Jennifer Haas, Todd Klitzke, Linda Mirkes, Jeff Thebo, Heidi Zich
Objective: Plan a late summer fundraising dinner in the Gardens of the Fox Cities where guests would sit next to the prairie and experience fresh food in a natural setting prepared and presented by local chefs. The use of locally sourced food reinforces sustainability concepts of growing fresh produce and preparing meals using fresh food.
Objective: We set out to improve the health and well-being of at-risk youth in our community by enhancing a healthy meals initiative at Youth Go, a nonprofit after-school program in Neenah. We agreed that obesity in youth is a severe problem and immediately our team we all embraced this initiative. We strived to educate the children and their families about nutrition, to provide them with practical tools for eating healthy and to raise money to sustain the effort, which provides meals two nights a week for young people who belong to Youth Go’s center.
Outcome/Impact: On paper, we developed a cookbook of healthy, practical recipes with a hand from Youth Go participants and a nutritionist. Also, we raised $6,250 in sponsorships to cover the cost of the group’s Healthy Meals Program for another year. Beyond the tangibles, however, we are confident that our efforts will bolster the sense of belonging and self-worth that Youth Go Outcome/Impact: The outcome of the nurtures in the young people it serves. event is anticipated to: Acceptance, discipline, respect and em- Raise awareness of sustainability issues powerment all run deep in the program. related to gardening The gratitude that flowed to our team from families at the group’s annual ban- Raise awareness of the Gardens of the quet, where we presented the cookbooks Fox Cities and funds, was humbling. Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Golf Outing Fundraiser
Team Members: Larry Baier, Peter Chen, Mike Frisch, Heather Harrington, Michele Leiden, Jane Semrow, Abe Weber Objective: The primary objective of our project was to partner with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) in planning and hosting their first golf outing fundraiser. Our team focused on securing event sponsors, golfers and silent auction items.
Outcome/Impact: In addition to meeting our primary objectives, we hade an opportunity to interact with the JDRF staff, board members and families which helped us gain a better understanding of the organization’s mission and goals. Our work continues in preparing for the golf outing in June. We hope our efforts help JDRF raise awareness with the community and additional funding through this event.
To assist local non-profits and other community-serving organizations, the new class of leaders identify the topics or issues in which they are experienced or interested. This supports the belief that individuals with passion and commitment to a cause or need will provide dedicated service. This listing is a community resource.

During the summer of 2000, I was thrilled to be offered the position of coordinator of Leadership Fox Cities. I would never have dreamed what creative circumstances, diverse people, remarkable places and thought provoking issues would have come before me in the last 12 years. Since that time, more than 500 class members have graduated have Leadership Fox Cities. Congratulations to all!! LFC continues to be sold and resold by its graduates. The very best and sharpest tool in our recruiting box is the extraordinary stories shared by our grads. While I have always been happy and excited to share the goals of this program, the biggest reason people choose to participate remains with the LFC alumni. Many serve on LFC steering and planning committees, as they interpret, develop and design programming for future LFC sessions. New programs are being added this year include the Executive/CEO program and the Youth Program starting in the fall. I am pleased and grateful to all LFC committee members for your continuous commitment, support and dedication. I want to also thank Bill Welch and Jane Garton for their support especially in my early years with the Chamber. I celebrate my experiences with this “moving classroom” of leadership development. It has brought me many challenges that were highly satisfying to both my personal and professional development.
“Leaders” I salute all of you!
Gayle
Introducing: Leadership Fox Cities Youth
Executive Leadership
The Chamber of Commerce is proud to announce Leadership Fox Cities Youth a collaborative effort developed by Leadership Fox Cities graduates, and engaging community leaders, government officials, corporate partners and non-profits throughout the Fox Cities. September 2012 begins the pilot year of Leadership Fox Cities Youth.
The Fox Cities Chamber’s new Leadership Fox Cities Executive program is dedicated to the development of C-level and VP-level senior management that have been newly recruited to the area and their spouse/guest. One of the greatest challenges as a region is our ability to attract and retain top talent from around the globe and the Chamber has stepped up to answer that need. This program is a condensed version of the very popular, traditional Leadership program and will assist the new recruits and their families with making immediate and lasting connections within the community.
The LFC Youth program is an investment in the future of the Fox Cities - developing young individuals to be the next generation of community leaders through a hands-on, experiential forum. The program will provide opportunities for youth to network with peers outside their current sphere of influence, and enable them to develop contacts with professionals through and beyond the formal LFC Youth program.
