LEADERSHIP
FOX CITIES 2013-2014
Your journey starts here
“The LFC Steering Committee takes great pride in developing a diverse set of experiences that the average citizen living in the Fox Cities will never know. One of the biggest things a leader does is to push their people to places they have never been. That means getting out of your comfort zones at times. We sincerely hope that the set of experiences you encountered over the past nine months triggered a few ideas and inspired you to get involved in this great community we all call home. Find something you’re passionate about and take it to new heights. It has been a pleasure serving your group and I wish each of you all the best in the future.” Tim Riedl, Jewelers Mutual Insurance Steering Chair for Leadership Fox Cities

Projects Loaves and Fishes & Maggie Gras Team Members: Tonya K. Dittman, Philip Lont, Devin Meyer, Emily Mueller, Megan Mudge and Rosie Sprangers Objective: To assist Loaves and Fishes, a local meal program housed at Trinity Lutheran Church, with adding a Friday dinner meal, our team offered to help find additional volunteers. Realizing the abundance of great work being done by nonprofits in our community, our team also felt inspired to help another organization. One organization that touched us all was Community Benefit Tree and the work they do with individuals and families going through medical crises. We set out to help with the decorating for a benefit, Maggie Gras, which will help the family of a young girl who is battling cancer. Outcome/Impact: Every member of our team has been added to the Loaves and Fishes active volunteer list. We’ve reached out to other groups, family, friends and co-workers to help Loaves and Fishes build their volunteer base for the Friday meal, the first of which will take place May 9, 2014. For Maggie Gras, our group has worked with Maggie’s aunt to understand vision for the day, plan and secure decorations and to help decorate the day of the benefit. The benefit was held on March 22, 2014.
Haven of Hope Playground Team Members: Steven R. Barry, Cindy Flauger, Chrissy O’Connell, Thomas James Simon and Keeley A. Winkel Objective: After meeting with the Executive Director of Haven of Hope, we evaluated the needs of this Center that cares for adults and children with special needs. Their main need is a better surface on their playground. Our group will work to design, fund and install a new surface for this playground.
Sustainable Gardening Team Members: Kathryn Blom, John Egan, Jaime Kriewaldt Dawn L. Nowakowski, and Steve Voskuil Objective: To create awareness in the community about the Mooring Programs. Mooring Program is a residential facility providing treatment for alcohol, substance abuse, or other chemical dependency. We also created a sustainable garden through the construction of a Hoop House (greenhouse) at the Casa Clare site of the Mooring Programs, and will provide an on-time gardening lesson that includes, but not limited to, garden handbook, healthy cooking lessons, canning and sustainable practices. Outcome/Impact: The Hoop House will provide the women of Casa Clare the opportunity to grow healthy food, but also to learn lifelong skills to cook healthier. The goal is that the hoop house will help the women with their recovery by allowing the women to gain a sense of ownership and accomplishment by deciding on what is grown in the hoop house, how to maintain it, and what to do with the final product (cooking, canning, etc.). In addition, awareness of eating a variety of nutritious foods and increased belief in the importance of maintaining health and wellness will contribute to a healthy recovery and future.
Outcome/Impact: We are working to hit our financial goal of $32,000. After which we will work with our contractor and a group of volunteers to install the playground surface. This will make the playground safer for the Haven of Hope clients and easier for staff members to push clients around the playground.
Center for Grieving Children Community Awareness Campaign Team Members: Sara J. Bell Tiffany Behnke, Gregg C. Syring, Steven J. Teofilo, Carol Wedig and Tara Wickersheim Objective: A team comprised of Leadership Fox Cities and Center for Grieving Children members will enhance the visibility and community awareness of the Center for Grieving Children by refreshing the center logo, website, brochure and supporting the launch of a new photo therapy program at the Center. Finally, the team will increase visibility of the services the Center provides through the distribution of information to local organizations and raise community awareness by placing a mobile kiosk containing center information in a pubic location within our community. Outcome/Impact: Our team successfully raised all necessary funds required for project success. We updated the Center’s logo, website, brochure and successfully launched the Center’s “What Grief Looks Like to Me” children’s photo therapy program. We increased visibility of the Center through promotion of center services at a Fox Valley Chapter of the Society for Human Resource Management conference. Finally, the team distributed Center brochures directly to local community businesses, institutions and school districts and placed a mobile kiosk displaying children’s “What Grief Looks Like to Me” images, Center brochures and contact information in a public location within our community.
Born Learning Trail at Plamann Park Team Members: Suzanne Brault Pagel, Matt Busch, Bridget M. Erwin, Adam Landsverk, Dave PaulySusan A. Stellmacher Objective: Our project involves the development of a Born Learning Trails a value add-on to the Children’s Farm/nature path area at Outagamie County Plamann Park. The Born Learning Trail is a United Way Fox Cities supported public engagement campaign designed to help parents, caregivers and communities support early learning, to boost children’s language and literacy skills, and to encourage families to get active.
Outcome/Impact: The interactive Born Learning Trail contains shapes, letters, and hopscotch squares, along with signs containing instructions for simple games that any adult can interact with young children to turn an excursion at the park into physical and cognitive fun learning moments. The 2011 LIFE Study indicates the Fox Valley is seeing a growing number of economically disadvantaged students and third grade reading proficiency is trending down. In addition, the Fox Cities has a growing epidemic of obesity impacting children’s health and future success. The Born Learning Trail provides an opportunity to improve early literacy and to allow kids to get active in a fun, educational way.
Bike Safety Rodeo for the Boys & Girls Club Emergency Shelter of the Fox Valley Playroom Facelift Team Members: Jana Baehman, Karlyn Barthel, Kurt H. Biese, Adam Lange, Matt Longmier and Amy Van Straten Objective: The objective of this project was to update the Emergency Shelter’s playroom with new shelving, toys and paint. Outcome/Impact: The outcome of this project is a more welcoming environment and positive experience for Shelter staff, families and children.
Team Members: Cheryl Brooks, Rose Fochs, Rachel Gonzalez, Trevor Rabbach, Cindy Schlichting and Landon R. Wiese Objective: Bring bicycle safety awareness to children at the Boys & Girls Club by providing helmets, rider identification kits, bicycle safety training and equipment safety checks. We hope to create excitement for learning bike and helmet safety!
Outcome/Impact: Assist the Boys & Girls Club in a successful Bike Rodeo that will help keep the children safe as many of them bike to and from the club, etc. In an effort to reach as many children as possible, the event will be held at the Boys & Girls Club. It is our hope that the Boys & Girls Club can use the groundwork and sponsor contacts from this rodeo to help them hold a successful event annually.
The new class of leaders identifies the topics or issues in which they are experienced or interested in. This supports the belief that individuals with passion and commitment to a cause or need will provide dedicated service, in order to assist local non-profits and other community-serving organizations. Congratulations class of 2014! You’ve made it through this unique community driven leadership program. My hope for all of you is that you’ve become more aware of our great community and some of its accolades, as well as some of its challenges. As a result, may you find things that move you to get more involved and start leading in the community and your places of business. As an alumni, I know first hand how important the alumni are to the future success of this program. My interest in the program came from conversations I had with community members who were past graduates. As the director, I’m always happy to share information about the program, but my passion for the program comes from being a past participant. This program is sold and resold by you, its graduates. The stories and experiences that you share prove to be the best and most effective tool we have when it comes to recruiting. Many graduates serve on our LFC planning committees. They are the people who interpret, develop and design programming for future LFC sessions. I am sincerely grateful to all of the LFC committee members for their continued dedication, commitment and support. I am so blessed and happy to be able to consider these people my friends. Leadership Executive Program
Congratulations Leadership Fox Cities Youth!
The Fox Cities Chamber’s Leadership Fox Cities Executive program is dedicated to the development of newly recruited C-level and VP-level management and their spouse or guest. One of the greatest challenges as a region is our ability to attract and retain top talent from around the globe, and the Chamber has stepped up to answer that need. This program is a condensed version of the very popular traditional Leadership program and will assists new recruits and their families with making immediate and lasting connections within the community.
Leadership Fox Cities Youth is a community driven leadership program educating students through experience; thereby giving our young leaders the confidence and understanding they need to take an active role in their community. The 23 students from Appleton, Menasha, Kimberly and Little Chute Area School Districts planned and executed four community service projects benefiting local non-profits.
