Fox Cities Chamber Announces Inception of
LEADERSHIP FOX CITIES ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce has announced the inception of an official Alumni Association for its long-standing program, Leadership Fox Cities (LFC). Newly formed Leadership Fox Cities Alumni Association’s first social event in December at D2 Sports Pub in Appleton.
Since 1991, Leadership Fox Cities has been driven by the mission of teaching participants to be imaginative and informed leaders in the community while preparing them for leadership roles in their place of business as well as the Fox Cities community. The newly established LFC Alumni Association (LFCAA) will actively support positive change through leadership development by providing resources to individuals and organizations in the Fox Cities. Membership in the LFCAA is open to all alumni of LFC.

The LFCAA is coordinated by a Board of Directors and committees. Networking opportunities, service events, social events and advanced leadership education will be provided for LFCAA members throughout the year. Past LFC participants can apply to join the official LFCAA by submitting an online application found at foxcitieschamber. com. LFCAA participants are requested to provide an annual donation of $50 per year or a lifetime contribution of $500. (A percentage of this contribution is tax deductible.) As a member of the LFCAA participants will have the opportunity to: • Network with LFC Alumni • Serve in leadership roles on the LFCAA board and committees • Volunteer with LFC alumni projects in the community • Participate in professional leadership education, service projects and social networking events • Connect with current and future LFC projects • Financially support LFC projects and scholarships

The Pinnacle Awards program recognizes individuals who embrace principled leadership, strategic thinking, balanced workplace values and an unrelenting pursuit of excellence. The selected award recipients have a unique blend of vision, energy, perseverance and skill and have demonstrated outstanding achievements in operating businesses as well as leadership in the community. BUSINESS LEADER HALL OF FAME INDUCTEE The Business Leader Hall of Fame is awarded to individuals who have demonstrated personal and business success, business leaders who have gained recognition and honor for outstanding achievement in their industry, who have been dedicated to the economic vitality in our community, and are role models for future generations.
Walter Keller - Founder (retired), Keller, Inc. Walter Keller is a current board member of Keller, Inc., and one of the original founders of Keller Structures, Inc., located in Kaukauna, WI. Keller, Inc. was created in 1960 and, under Walter’s presidential leadership, grew from a single agricultural buildingerection crew, into a full-service construction company with concrete, truss, and farmstead divisions. In 1986, Walter sold Keller to his employees, eventually retiring in 1989. Throughout the years after Walter retired, Keller has continued to thrive in the commercial and agricultural building markets, grown to more than 260 employeeowners and added offices in Milwaukee, Wausau, and Madison. Walter continues to monitor the company’s growth as an active member of their board of directors. Walter is extremely blessed to have a loving wife, son, daughter-in-law, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. While Walter has changed the lives of many people in the Fox Valley, he has always extended his heart of gold to his family, friends and to the community. He started Outer Limits Youth Center in Forest Junction, is a member of the Endowment Trust board at the New Hope Center in Chilton, and is the current owner of Camp Forest in Forest Junction. Walter also enjoys hosting guests to view one of the largest John Deere tractor collections in the world, with 620 tractors on his property in Forest Junction. His collection includes many first-generation tractors, models that only had a single model ever made, and one-of-a-kind treasures that people travel from around the world to see.

ENTREPRENEUR OF THE YEAR AWARD Awarded to an individual who, through his/her own risk and initiative, has established a thriving and successful business.
Kimberly Stoeger - Owner/Clinical Nutritionist, Nutritional Healing, LLC Kimberly Stoeger is the owner of Nutritional Healing, which she started in 2010. She is a Clinical Nutritionist with her undergraduate degree in Business Management, Professional of Human Resource certification and background, and Master of Science in Human Nutrition and Disease Management. Kim developed her company for the betterment of health care. She knew that fad diet companies were draining people’s wallets and making them more ill, and the hospital care model was not equipped time-wise for the personalized health programs we need for chronic conditions. Kimberly has experience working with clients having weight issues, food sensitivities, sports nutrition, and general health concerns such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, digestive distress and autoimmune disorders. Kim has since grown her company to 10 employees and two locations: Appleton and Green Bay. Nutritional Healing compliments our health care system through science-based nutrition, bloodwork, and personalized nutrition/menu direction unique to each client. The dream behind her passion has always been to change people’s lives from the inside out and get to the root cause of disease. JOYCE BYTOF EXCEPTIONAL MENTOR AWARD Awarded to an individual who is proactive in the advancement of others by sharing time, talent and business experience for the purposes of promoting growth and opportunity in the Fox Cities community.
Joanne Fischer - President, Telecom Insites, LLC Joanne came to the Fox Valley in the 1960s raising four children over the years. She worked as the first marketing director for the Nicolet Clinic Healthcare (HMO), now known as Network Health. She began her career in the telecommunications industry in 1984 with Schneider Communications, moving on to successful years at AT&T before founding Telecom Insites in 1999. She was a founding member of the Appleton chapter of Women in Management, past President of Appleton’s Breakfast Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow recipient, and President of Sales and Marketing Execs. Joanne taught Sunday School for 16 years, was Team Leader for three years with Lutheran Girl Pioneers, served as a board member of the Junior Women’s Club and chaired the first city-wide paper recycling program. Joanne organized community volunteers to acquire and develop Summit Park on Appleton’s north side. The list of her community involvement is extensive, and includes past President of the Children’s Hospital Regional Board. She served seven years on the Goodwill Industries Board and co-chaired their capital campaign “I had no idea”, among others. Joanne also served three years on the UW Fox Valley Foundation Board. Her involvement with the chamber includes being an Ambassador since 1984; chairing the Ambassador Club, Small Business Committee, Golf Committees and was a Fox Cities Chamber Board member. She received the ATHENA® Leadership Award, as an outstanding business woman, in 1992 and was Ambassador of the Year in 2012. Joanne has always loved being part of the Fox Cities business, social and cultural communities; you can see she has found ample opportunities to support the chamber and our community.

ATHENA® LEADERSHIP AWARD Awarded to a woman who has achieved the highest level of professional excellence. This individual contributes time and energy to improve the quality of life for others in the Fox Cities community, and actively assists others, particularly women, in realizing their full leadership potential.
Patti Habeck - President, Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin “If it isn’t illegal, immoral, unethical, expensive--doesn’t hurt the children and doesn’t use the good kitchen towels, then try it.” This was the guidance offered as Patti began her very first job in the nonprofit sector. With permission to be creative and take risks (yet frugal), she began her nonprofit career as the Director of Education at the Fox Cities Children’s Museum (now known as the Building for Kids). In this role, she assisted in leading the Museum through financial and program renovation, a capital campaign and a massive rebranding—and in doing so, fell in love with the nonprofit sector. Patti particularly enjoys tackling the challenging issues facing nonprofit organizations. She left the Children’s Museum to accept a role at the Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region. At the Foundation, Patti found her niche in identifying and funding the exact intersection of philanthropy and community need—a unique spot that leaves funders inspired by their giving, and nonprofits stronger from the connection. Several years later, she was presented with a new nonprofit challenge—fundraising and overseeing the building of the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin Food Bank in Little Chute. Eventually, Patti accepted the role of President, and now leads the largest hunger relief organization in the state. Patti has a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology and Chemistry and a Master of Science in Education degree in counseling with an emphasis in higher education and community development. She has formerly worked as a college residence director and an Anatomy and Physiology instructor. Patti resides in Appleton with her husband of 25 years, Kevin. They have three children—Abby, a marketing professional now living in Pewaukee; Emily, a senior at UW Madison majoring in Operations Management/Supply Chain; and Jack, a senior at Appleton East High School. Patti enjoys traveling, sports, and relaxing with a great glass of wine.
CHAMPION OF THE CHAMBER AWARD Awarded to an individual who, through his/her on-going volunteer efforts within the Fox Cities Chamber, helps strengthen the local economy through innovative leadership, workforce development, and community and business development. This individual influences both members and non-members to become more involved in the Chamber.
Scott Jensen - Director of Marketing & Digital, Wisconsin Herd Since moving to Oshkosh in 2011, Scott has found himself most comfortable in the Chamber of Commerce setting. He started attending chamber events at the Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce while working for UW-Oshkosh athletics before his employment began with the Boys & Girls Club in Berlin, WI. There he continued building relationships and creating greater visibility for the Club through chamber volunteerism. He arrived in Appleton in the summer of 2015 and immediately reached out to the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce to find out about his company’s membership status. As a member, he quickly signed up to become an Ambassador and began meeting with businesses to walk them through their chamber benefits. He leveraged resources through the chamber to increase the visibility of Appleton Ice, Inc. by hosting social events and utilizing its marketing benefits. He currently serves on the membership council. He became a board member of the Fox West Chamber of Commerce in 2016 and served as its secretary for two years. He’s received the Exemplary Marketing Award for small business from the Fox Cities Chamber in 2017 and the Community Service Award from the Fox West Chamber of Commerce in 2017 on behalf of Appleton Ice, Inc. In the spring of 2018 he graduated from Leadership Fox Cities, a program of the Fox Cities Chamber, and his small group led a capital campaign for the Ascend Initiative in Neenah by raising $100,000 to build a kitchen. Most recently he joined the Leadership Fox Cities steering committee and is a board member on the Leadership Fox Cities Alumni Association.

GUS A. ZUEHLKE DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD This award is named in honor of Gus A. Zuehlke, a past Chairman of the Board of the Fox Cities Chamber. In the spirit of Gus’ passion for serving his community, this award honors an individual who has made outstanding contributions through leadership in business and service during his/her years as a Chamber member. This business leader has been a job creator through business endeavors, and has made significant contributions as a driver of economic growth in the Fox Cities. The recipient of this award has a $5,000 grant donated in his/her name to the charitable organization of their choice.
Catherine Tierney President/Chief Executive Officer, Community First Credit Union Cathie joined Community First Credit Union in 1976 as a teller/receptionist. Over the years, Cathie learned the business and worked in many areas, spending the majority of her career as Vice-President of Marketing and branch operations. In 1991, she received the Certified Credit Union Executive Designation and in 1993 graduated from the first CU Executive Leadership Program at the Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Cathie was promoted to executive vice president in 1993 and in January of ‘94, was named President/ CEO of Community First. During her 24 years at the helm, the credit union has grown exponentially in team members, member-owners, assets and branch locations. For the past ten consecutive years, Community First has been named one of the top 10 credit unions in the U.S. for financial performance. Cathie holds several significant state and national service roles and is also very active locally. She serves on the boards of: SECURA Insurance, Habitat for Humanity Fox Cities, Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region, Fox Cities Building for the Arts, Riverview Gardens, The Fox Cities Environmental Learning Campus at the Bubolz Nature Preserve and New North. She also serves on the United Way Community Leadership Committee. Cathie served on the Governor’s Council for Financial Literacy under WI Governor Jim Doyle, and is a passionate supporter of life-long learning and an advocate for making financial education available to everyone. She received the Governor’s Financial Literacy Award from Gov. Scott Walker in 2016 in the category of Legacy. Cathie has been honored with several other awards including the CU Hero of the Year (CUNA), ATHENA® Leadership Award, Credit Union Professional of the Year (WCUL), Woman Manager of the Year, Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow Award, Walter Rugland Community Service Award and the 2016 Post Crescent Media CEO of the Year. Brad Cebulski - President, BConnected, LLC Brad graduated from the University of Wisconsin - Eau Claire in 2011 with a degree in Entrepreneurial Management. Since graduating, Brad has channeled his passion for small businesses by founding BConnected, LLC, to help small businesses navigate the complex social media landscape. In the last seven and a half years, BConnected has grown to 19 employees and expanded into the Milwaukee market. Brad sits on the Board of Directors for the History Museum at the Castle, and has been a long-time member of the Pulse Young Professionals Leadership Board. Beyond his work with BConnected, he has been a co-founder of Fox Cities Restaurant Week, a co-founder of Blank Slate Collective a creative studio in Downtown Appleton, and a co-founder of The Alley Project, a fundraiser for The History Museum. When not working, he enjoys time with his dog, exploring his passion for music, cooking, and spending time with his family.

Celebrating 37 Years Of Giving In 2018
A MILE OF FUN SINCE 1981
Octoberfest was the result of a 1981 brainstorming session of the Appleton Downtown Retail Association, (the predecessor of Appleton Downtown Inc.) and the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce. They were searching for a way to promote their businesses, to improve their community image and to showcase Downtown Appleton and the businesses located there. Octoberfest is volunteer driven. About fifteen people serve on the executive committee, to almost 800 volunteers who tend bar, work in headquarters, sell beer tickets and work as block captains, to the 2,000 plus people who work in the food booths, each person feels a personal ownership of Octoberfest. Octoberfest is “community driven”. Each nonprofit booth that sells food at Octoberfest uses their profits to support their community project. Some of them view Octoberfest as their major fundraiser for the year. We estimate that more than 2.5 million dollars have been reinvested in the community as a result of Octoberfest over the years. Octoberfest is truly a “Fox Cities Institution” and serves as a role model for other regional festivals.
2018 Results Nearly 66% of the nonprofit food vendors made $1,000 or more this year, and Octoberfest has become a steady source of revenue for them as 80% have been vendors in the past. In addition, proceeds from Octoberfest are used for the competitive grant program that provides funding to nonprofits year round. Grants are awarded via an application process in three cycles: December 15, March 15 and June 15. The application and instructions are available at octoberfestonline.org.

1. Our Business Breakfast Bytes monthly educational session focused on available funding opportunities and how to access them in November. The session’s panel of experts, representing Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Fox Valley Region, J.J. Keller Foundation, Lawrence University, Community Foundation for the Fox Valley Region and Greater Fox Cities Habitat for Humanity, provided education to attendees on grants and other funding options such as fundraising, donors, planned giving and annual funds.

2. Once again, Thrivent Financial generously hosted our September Business Connection with quite the event. After a brief welcome from Chief Administration Officer, Terry Timm, guests were able to enjoy international cuisine by sampling foods from around the world. 3. Luv2Play, a family entertainment center featuring an indoor play structure and arcade games, recently welcomed the Fox Cities Chamber for its grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony. Their facility offers party rooms, a cafĂŠ and plenty of indoor play space for the family. 4. Apotheke Wellness celebrated their new location with a ribbon cutting and open house in November. They are a health and wellness boutique offering patients supplements, natural skin care, CBD oil products, essential oils and more. Visit their location in East Appleton. 5. The Fox Cities Chamber and Fox Cities Regional Partnership hosted a breakfast event with key partners to highlight the recent results from the Fox Cities Benefit Survey. Attendees heard from a keynote speaker about the benefits of and ways to improve family-friendly policies in the workplace.

6. We recently hosted our December Business Connection and holiday party at Gibson Music Hall where members could network with one another and enjoy time together during the holiday season. 7. Mathnasium of North Appleton invited the Chamber to join them for a ribbon cutting event of their new location this fall. Mathnasium is a math-only learning center that teaches students in a way that makes sense to them, helping kids understand and appreciate math. 8. Little Critter Pediatric Dentistry hosted a ribbon cutting event and open house and the Chamber was honored to attend. They are a pediatric dental practice focusing on patient care. 9. A ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony were held recently at Primrose Retirement Communities in Appleton in conjunction with the Heart of the Valley Chamber. Primrose is a place to retire to, not retire from. They serve ages 55 and older with independent and assisted living as well as memory care. 10. Our Leadership Fox Cities class was immersed in all things health and wellness during their program in November. Participants gained a deeper understanding of trends in healthcare along with local resources available to address a variety of healthcare needs.

“Our mission at the Hope Clinic is to demonstrate the love of Jesus Christ to medically uninsured and underinsured people of the Fox Valley by providing access to quality medical care for the healing of the body, mind and spirit.

Hope Clinic has provided more than 4,500 patient visits to help those in need. Services that they provide range from primary care visits with labs to specialist visits. For example, a 19-year-old came to the clinic because he was trying to get a job and needed a work physical for clearance to get started. The employer told him they thought he might have a thyroid issue. Hope Clinic doctors ran the blood work and did a full exam. He had a rapid heart rate. The provider then asked him when he felt his heart racing like this, he said that it always felt that way. After the blood work came back showing hyperthyroid, the clinic called him and got him on the appropriate medication. Two weeks later he came back in looking like a young kid, refreshed.

A month later, he came back again with pink cheeks and a healthy weight gain. He was all excited about starting his new job. Feeling healthy can make the world of a difference to one’s outlook and productivity. The Hope Clinic started from a vision by the Senior Pastor of Appleton Alliance Church to help those who could not afford their healthcare and or medications. As they continue to grow and serve the community in 2019 and 2020, they are looking to expand to new services and add additional hours. PULSE hosted its 8th Annual Fox Cities Future 15 Young Professionals Awards with a sold-out event held at Outer Edge Stage in Appleton in early March. The event highlighted the 15 selected young professionals who excel not only within their respective places of employment but also give back to our community in innumerable ways. The 2018 Young Professional of the Year, Brad Cebulski, was also recognized.
2018 brought three Bazaar After Dark Night Markets to various communities across the Fox Cities. The first being in downtown Little Chute as the culmination of YPWeek 2018 in April. The second was held on Commercial Street in Neenah in July and the final night market event ended the lineup in September in downtown Menasha.
Each year we are proud to celebrate these professionals who positively influence our quality of life in the Fox Cities, playing an integral role in attracting and retaining talent in the area.
SPRING For the fourth consecutive year, PULSE participated in YPWeek, a statewide collaboration through NEWaukee and WEDC, to bring several engaging and creative events to immerse young professionals (and those young at heart) in the Fox Cities community. YPWeek is a weeklong platform for discovery, adventure and meaningful conversations about the issues that matter among young professionals in Wisconsin. It brings together key leaders in the community, at purposefully chosen locations that integrate the unique cultural assets with meaningful learning or social interaction. The activities engage the millennial workforce in experiences that are important to young professionals while educating employers on the important role these functions play in retaining this workforce.
In partnership with Habitat for Humanity’s Rock the Block Neighborhood Builds, Bazaar After Dark is dedicated to revitalizing and drawing positive attention to underappreciated business districts in the Fox Cities. More than a unique street event featuring fire breathers, aerial dancers and food trucks, Bazaar After Dark works to foster community collaborations through art, music and cultural experiences under the warm glow of Edison light bulbs.
FALL Recently, PULSE hosted its annual traveling urban art market, The Artery. This event pops up in unexpected vacant spaces throughout the Fox Cities, providing local artists with a platform to sell their work, meet fellow makers and drive the creative economy forward in Northeast Wisconsin.

Through the Talent Collaborative The Talent Collaborative of the Fox Cities Chamber is comprised of business, education and community partners throughout the Fox Cities. Building a thriving, sustainable talent ecosystem can only be achieved through partnership and collaboration. The Talent Collaborative pursues new ways to align resources and efforts to develop partnerships with: employers, economic development groups, K-12 school districts, post-secondary institutions, government and community organizations to increase its ability to anticipate, adapt and respond to workforce needs, current and future, in the Fox Cities. Our mission is to identify and support innovative and sustainable strategies that will lead to developing, attracting and retaining a skilled, motivated and responsive workforce.

Your Future LIVE! Career Expo Your Future LIVE! offers an all-access pass to career exploration for local students in the Fox Cities Region. Expanded to two days in 2018, the first day of the event encourages 8th grade students to map their career pathways and navigate 16 career clusters all in one location. Connecting students to a variety of careers and local employers helps provide insight for our young talent as they prepare for their future. Introduced in 2018, day two of the event linked area high school students with a variety of opportunities including: career exploration, apprenticeships, summer jobs and postsecondary paths. Students planned the day according to their interests, seeking out purposeful conversations and opportunities. This addition to the annual event offered another tool towards formalizing academic and career planning goals.
Smart Girls Rock! As the demand for STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers grows, the opportunities to connect students grows. Smart Girls Rock focused on the opportunity to connect young women to careers in STEM-related fields with professional technical women in our local community. Celebrating its 4th year at Menasha Corporation, the Fox Cities Chamber of Commerce helped organize the event
which welcomed approximately 100 young women exploring an interest in STEM. The successful event helps foster a connection between mentors, STEM careers and students.
Your Future Fox Cities Your Future Fox Cities is the web-based platform and tool used to connect employers, educators, community partners and students. The Talent Collaborative is actively engaged in using this tool to link students to career-based learning opportunities.
Since its inception, Your Future Fox Cities helped facilitate approximately 6,000 student connections from 22 schools. Job shadows continue to be the number one career-based learning connection. Top student interests include veterinarian, engineer, teacher and firefighter. The average number of hours an employer actively spends on hiring a single qualified employee.
Earlier this fall, the Fox Cities Chamber and the Fox Cities Regional Partnership conducted an employer survey regarding the benefits they currently offer to their employees. The Fox Cities Benefit Survey, consisting of 238 questions, was conducted from August 1st through September 30th, 2018. Several other organizations with aligning missions helped distribute the survey including: Fox Valley SHRM, Heart of the Valley Chamber, Fox West Chamber, the NEW Manufacturing Alliance, United Way Fox Cities, the Community Early Learning Center, and the Childcare Resource and Referral Center. Soon after, several other Chambers and Economic Development organizations throughout Northeastern Wisconsin also distributed the survey. The survey results were offered for free to participants to encourage participation to respond to this survey. One of the last questions was, “What creative benefits do you offer?”. We explained that these “creative benefits” might be something that their company in particular was able to offer because of their industry/type of business.

“What was the most important thing you learned this year that will help your business succeed in 2019?”
As I reflect on 2018 and what I learned that will make me more successful in 2019, there is one event that stands out. In February, Community First Credit Union brought nationally renowned author Jon Gordon in to speak to our employees. One exercise we all had to do was based on his book “One Word That Will Change Your Life”. We each chose a word that would guide us through the year. I chose the word “Positivity”. This was a stretch for me as I have not always been the most positive person in my life. But I found myself living that word. My outlook changed and even more importantly, I saw myself as someone that could spread that feeling of positivity to others. Every interaction I have, I do my best to have a positive experience and encourage others to pass that on. I truly feel that this is something that will stay with me in 2019 and well beyond.
