STEM

A 21st CENTURY GIRLS' CURRICULUM

Our Program Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) have become increasingly important to living, learning, and working in the 21st century. All students learn to: • Develop hands-on problem-solving abilities • Expand their knowledge and comfort with various technology tools • Strengthen their critical and analytical thinking skills • Increase their confidence and willingness to take academic risks

STEM IN THE CLASSROOM EXCITING CAREERS FOR THE FUTURE Foxcroft faculty designed an innovative and fun curriculum with Physics before other core science subjects, providing a foundation for Chemistry and Biology. Math begins at Algebra I with courses through to Multivariable Calculus. There are also many exciting electives in both science and math to explore.

I learned to speak my mind and value my own voice, giving me the strength to pursue an interest in a primarily male-dominated field. —Gabi P. '15

30%+

25%+

or more of lessons consist of inquiry-based laboratory work.

100%

of Explorations in Engineering and STEM Application & Technology courses are project based.

STEM OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM ON AND OFF CAMPUS, CO-CURRICULAR ACTIVITIES PROJECT GREEN BUILD AND PROJECT REBUILD Engineering, mathematical, and design skills come alive as girls learn from engineers and architects, while exploring various aspects of building construction on the Foxcroft campus. • Fundamentals of foundation systems • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification • Hands-on activities and hard-hat site tours

EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOPS

STEM TRIPS AND INTERNSHIPS

Stimulating and fun activities and projects with women who work in STEM fields provide our students with important role models.

Field trips to STEM workplaces and laboratories introduce a variety of career paths to girls. For some students, internships with STEM professionals offer an even higher level of learning.

STRATEGIC PARTNERSHIPS IN STEM EPICS HIGH: A UNIQUE ENGINEERING PARTNERSHIP Foxcroft was the first girls’ school in Virginia to forge a partnership with Purdue University’s EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) program to work alongside community organizations to: • Use practical application of design thinking to design, build, and deliver solutions for nonprofit organizations • Address human, community, and environmental needs • Hone professional, presentation and communication skills

EXPEDITION K2M: THE STEM SUMMIT

VIRGINIA TECH MARE CENTER: EQUINE RESEARCH & OUTREACH Foxcroft students work with staff and graduate students on important equine research projects and assist in outreach and education efforts at the nearby Middleburg Agricultural Research and Extension (MARE) Center.

Along with K2M’s team of female engineers, Foxcroft hosts a fun competition where teams of high school and middle school girls from more than a dozen area schools spend the day solving real-world problems with their science, math, and analytical skills..
