Our auto-buying expert: Cheaper doesn’t mean a better deal What exactly does a good deal look like when shopping for a vehicle these days? Everyone’s looking for the best deal, but what does that mean? It means something different to everyone, but I’ll tell you what it shouldn’t mean to anyone buying – finding the cheapest price tag around without considering anything else. That’s because it all comes down to what the dealer did to prepare the car for sale. Sometimes there’s a good reason a vehicle at another dealer is $1,000 more for what’s basically the same make/model/year, and around the same miles. If the price is that different, then they’re far from the same. The vehicles may have different histories, they may have been set up differently by their respective dealers, etc. For example, I recently had a scenario where a member initially “saved” money on an auto purchase, but now, a mere four months later, is spending another $1,900 on repairs. So, what’s the best way to avoid this? Ask questions. Push for information on everything that has been done to the vehicle before they put it on the lot. Furthermore, check the tires to make sure they’re still good, and if you have a mechanic you trust, bring them along to help. Fox fraud department: Avoid charity scams with these tips There’s a lot of strife in our world, which means there are many who need the help of those who are more fortunate. But with so many charity and non-profit organizations asking for donations, how can you tell if it’s a legitimate organization? Before you open your heart and wallet to help the people and the causes you believe in, take these steps to ensure they are legitimate: • Research the name of the organization/cause by searching the name online combined with terms like review, scam, or complaint. • Find out if the charity/fundraiser is registered in the state, as this can be a good indicator that it’s a legitimate charity. • Before giving, ask for more information about the organization/charity, including contact information you can try before donating. • If you wish to make a donation, either contact the organization directly or go through a local charitable organization in your community. If you’d like an example of a local charity, check out the Fox Cares Foundation*at foxcares.org. *Fox Cares Foundation, Inc. is a WI nonprofit corporation with a 501(c)(3) status effective June 21, 2016. Sixth Cooperative Principle: Cooperation Among Cooperatives When we work together to benefit our members and the communities we are part of, we all come out ahead. In the case of credit unions, we’re all part of the Credit Union League, and share ideas with each other and help each other continue to grow and improve. You’ll never see a buyout, only partnerships. This cooperation is why you’ll see credit unions co-sponsoring events, or volunteering at the same non-profits. We’re not afraid to share the spotlight with another credit union if it means furthering the credit union cause and making a difference for our members. Federally Insured by NCUA.
