Fraud Alert: Skimmer Incidents

Uncovered in the Milwaukee Area

Stay vigilant in your local area as skimming devices have been found in Milwaukee. The likelihood of these fraudsters expanding their operations to other regions is significant.

But what is skimming? Skimming involves installing unauthorized devices on ATMs, payment terminals, or fuel pumps to capture card data and PINs for fraudulent activities. Here’s how you can protect your financial information:

• Inspect ATMs, payment terminals, and other card readers before using. Look for anything loose, crooked, damaged, or scratched.

• Pull at the edges of the keypad before entering your PIN. Then, cover the keypad when you enter your PIN to prevent cameras from recording your entry.

• Use ATMs in well-lit, indoor locations, which are less vulnerable to skimming.

• Be alert for skimming devices in tourist areas, which are popular targets.

• Use debit and credit cards with chip technology. In the U.S., there are fewer devices that steal chip data versus cards that only have magnetic strip data.

• Avoid using your debit card when you have linked accounts. Use a credit card instead.

• Contact Fox if the ATM doesn’t return your card after you end or cancel a transaction.

• Activate Card Controls within our mobile app to turn your card off and on, get notifications when your card is used, and so much more. Learn more at foxcu.org/fox-card-controls

And as always, if you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

When it Comes to a New Vehicle, Should You Opt for an Extended Warranty?

It depends. If you can handle paying for repairs as they arise, the choice is about cost management. But if unexpected expenses could strain your finances, an extended warranty* might be wise.

Repair costs are soaring, and we o en hear about high repair bills. The situation gets tricky if repairs exceed the car's value.

Stressed over the warranty cost? Consider this: A 5-year 120,000-mile warranty costs $2,000. If you break that down into a yearly cost, it’s only $400 per year. Many pay more for car insurance. If you’re willing to pay for accident protection, why wouldn’t it also be worth while to protect mechanical/electrical parts of a vehicle with a warranty? There are usually more cars in the service department getting repaired than in the body shop getting repaired. Just some food for thought.

A Rise in Student Loan Scams

Due to the payment pause being lifted on federal student loans, scammers are now working hard to step in and deceive borrowers. According to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, approximately 65% of student loans have had changes in who services their loans in the last three years. This makes it easy for scammers to step in and fool you. If you’re unsure who your current servicer is, we encourage you to visit studentaid.gov to ensure you’re sending your payments to the correct servicer.

This website* is also where you can consolidate your student loans for no cost. Be aware of anyone who calls you about consolidating your federal student loan for a fee. If you’re interested in refinancing with a private student loan**, Fox is here to help!
