With the adoption of the latest lightweight body and chassis technologies, the vehicle’s all-terrain performance has moved on to another level, both in the breadth and accessibility of its off-road capability, and its on-road handling and refinement. True to the Range Rover DNA, the new model features the unique Command Driving Position. Amongst the industry-leading innovations is a ground-breaking nextgeneration version of Land Rover’s Terrain Response® system, which analyses the current driving conditions and automatically selects the most suitable vehicle settings. To ensure exceptional durability and reliability, the new model has been subjected to Land Rover’s punishing on- and off-road test and development regime, with a fleet of vehicles covering countless thousands of miles over 18 months of arduous tests in over 20 countries with extremes of climate and road surfaces. Within the cabin, the Range Rover provides occupants with a sensation of serene isolation, meeting the highest standards for refinement. Measures like the rigorously optimised body structure and acoustic lamination of the windscreen and side door glass have significantly reduced noise levels, while the new chassis architecture with re-engineered four-corner air suspension has enabled engineers to achieve even more luxurious ride comfort and refinement.
The sumptuous interior incorporates distinctive Range Rover design cues, but executed with a very contemporary treatment, and clean, elegant surfaces which are flawlessly presented using the finest leathers and veneers. With 118mm more legroom, the rear compartment offers vastly more space and comfort, with the option of a new two-seat Executive Class seating package for the ultimate in rear-seat luxury. The all-new Range Rover features a revolutionary all-aluminium monocoque body structure which is 39 per cent lighter than the steel body in the outgoing model, enabling total vehicle weight savings of up to 420kg. To deliver the model’s characteristic effortless performance, customers have the choice of three powerful V8 engines (5.0-litre 510PS LR-V8 Supercharged, 375PS LR-V8 petrol and 4.4-litre 339PS SDV8 diesel), and the sophisticated new 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 diesel which combines swift and responsive performance with outstanding CO2 emissions of 196g/km. The all-new Range Rover has been engineered with the latest developments in vehicle technologies, from interior luxury features such as exclusive Meridian surround sound music systems and powered upper and lower tailgates, to advanced chassis and driver assistance technologies including two-channel Dynamic Response active lean control and Intelligent Emergency Braking. Designed and engineered at Land Rover’s development centres in the UK, the new Range Rover will be produced in a new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Solihull, UK – employing the latest low-energy aluminium body construction technologies. he unmistakable design of the Range Rover, from its distinctive silhouette to the strong architecture of its cabin, has been at the core of the model’s enduring appeal. Building on this heritage, the all-new model has a clean and elegant shape which is derived from a fresh new interpretation of Range Rover design cues. While instantly recognisable as a Range Rover, the new vehicle takes a significant step forward with a bold evolution of the model’s iconic design language, explains Design Director and Chief Creative Officer Gerry McGovern: “Designing the next generation Range Rover, following over 40 years of success, came with a huge responsibility to protect the DNA of such an icon. Our design team worked incredibly hard to capture the elegant proportions and pure surfaces which have been a key feature of Range Rover design.” At just under 5m long, the new model has a very similar footprint to the current Range Rover, but with a smoother and more aerodynamic shape, the roofline sits 20mm lower in access mode. Fresh new interpretations of the classic design cues help to capture that essential Range Rover spirit, including the signature clamshell bonnet with its distinctive castellations, the floating roof, and the graphic of the side fender vents, now executed on the surface of the front doors. The vehicle’s fresh and contemporary appearance is enhanced
by carefully crafted design details which help to give the new Range Rover its distinctive character, such as the imposing grille and signature headlamp graphics, and also the striking accent graphics which sweep around the body and flow into the rear of the car. RANGE ROVER INTERIOR – THE BEST PLACE TO BE “A Range Rover interior is something special – simply, it gives our customers the feeling that there is no better place to be. We have made sure that the new model delivers exactly the same sense of well-being, with a highly contemporary design which offers a completely new level of quality and refinement.” Gerry McGovern, Design Director Designers set out to create an interior environment with a modern and pure character, incorporating distinctive Range Rover design cues, but with a fresh and very contemporary treatment. The cabin retains the characteristic strong, architectural forms and these are emphasised by extremely clean and elegant surfaces which are flawlessly executed using the finest leathers and veneers, with immaculate metal finishes giving the finishing touch. Building on the signature Range Rover interior architecture, the centrepiece of the cabin is the bold intersection between the strong horizontal elements of the instrument panel and the vertical lines of the centre stack.

Through the centre of the cabin, a powerful new graphic is created by the broad centre console which runs between the driver and front passenger. The console has a beautifully sculptured veneer surface which appears to float above the supporting trim. The clean, contemporary lines of the instrument panel and console reflect the effort to refine and simplify the interior. For example, the control layout features 50 per cent fewer switches, to deliver a more elegant and relaxing driving environment. Material quality has been raised to a new level on the new Range Rover, with the flawless execution and attention to detail typified by the beautifully tailored twin-needle stitching which finishes the sumptuous leather seats and interior surfaces. CREATING THE ULTIMATE BESPOKE VEHICLE To enable Range Rover customers to create the ultimate bespoke vehicle, the new model offers an outstanding selection of colours, finishes, seating options and special details, including the spectacular choice of finishes provided by the exclusive Autobiography series. MAJOR WEIGHT SAVING COMPONENTS

nce the most precious metal in the world due to the challenges of extracting it from its ore, aluminium is equally valuable today in terms of the dynamic and safety benefits it conveys to the new Range Rover. The new Range Rover sees the first application of Land Rover’s lightweight aluminium D7u platform. The world’s first SUV with an all-aluminium monocoque body structure, the new Range Rover saves 180kg in the bodyshell alone compared to the previous model. Key to this was the development of two new alloys to deliver the increased structural integrity and design language while reducing weight. AC300, a crash-crush 6000-series alloy was developed to provide increased levels of strength and survive the same punishing off-road impacts as any Range Rover while offering considerable weight savings. The Range Rover’s one-piece side panel is the world’s largest single pressing in any vehicle and yet weighs just 7kg. The second alloy, AC600, was developed for the exterior body panels to offer the robustness and quality of finish expected of a Range Rover but with much greater formability. This allows greater clarity and tightness of feature lines and curve radiuses, which have been reduced by more than 50 per cent. Aluminium is only part of Land Rover’s commitment to the use of lightweight materials. The new Range Rover also features a magnesium front panel and cross member, composite upper tailgate and new, highstrength steel for the seat frames. The result is a 39 per cent weight saving over the previous generation body with the commensurate gains in economy, emissions, performance and agility.

CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES Fittingly, given the cutting-edge nature of the materials used, the new Range Rover adopts construction techniques originally developed in the aeronautical industry. In conjunction with Computer Aided Engineering and high pressure die-castings to optimise key load-bearing areas, this has resulted in an increase in structural stiffness of more than a third. No welds are used in the manufacturing process, instead the panels are joined using aircraft grade adhesive and more than 3400 self-piercing rivets. Because both techniques are always used together when joining panels, the result offers greater strength than a traditional spot weld. In order to ensure that no galvanic corrosion can occur between the boron steel rivets and the aluminium panels, a special coating was developed to isolate each material. The all-new aluminium body manufacturing facility in Solihull is the largest of its kind in the world and operates a closed-loop recycling system, which Jaguar Land Rover is rolling out to its suppliers.

rom the very first model introduced over 40 years ago, unmatched all-terrain capability and performance have been fundamental elements of the Range Rover DNA. Now, with the launch of the fourth-generation vehicle in 2012, those Land Rover genes are just as strong. Indeed, with the adoption of the latest body and chassis technologies, the performance of the Range Rover has moved on to another level, both in its on-road handling and refinement, and the breadth and accessibility of its offroad capability. Our customers take for granted that this vehicle will cope with anything it’s asked to do, and we have used all of our experience and technology to exceed their expectations once again.” INNOVATIVE TERRAIN RESPONSE® SYSTEM With its advanced lightweight body structure, state-of-theart new suspension design and unique Terrain Response® technologies, the all-new Range Rover has raised its standards once again, both in terms of its on-road capability, and its unmatched off-road performance. Amongst the industry-leading innovations is a ground-breaking next-generation version of Land Rover’s award-winning Terrain Response® system. Terrain Response® 2 Auto features an automatic setting which uses sophisticated ‘intelligent’ systems to analyse the current driving conditions and automatically select the most suitable terrain program. Like all Terrain Response® systems, each setting optimises driveability and traction by adapting the responses of the car’s engine, gearbox, centre differential and chassis systems to match the demands of the terrain.

LIGHTWEIGHT SUSPENSION ARCHITECTURE Another key factor in the enhanced driving capability of the new Range Rover is a state-of-the-art new lightweight suspension. Primarily constructed from lightweight aluminium components, the suspension architecture is fully-independent, with a widespaced double-wishbone design at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the rear. The new suspension system delivers class-leading wheel travel – with 260mm of movement at the front and 310mm at the rear, compared to less than 200mm for most competitor vehicles – providing exceptional wheel articulation and composure to deal with the toughest conditions. As on previous Range Rovers, the lightweight chassis architecture is combined with four-corner air suspension to optimise the vehicle’s versatility both on- and off-road. The air springs offer variable ride height and are cross-linked for maximum axle articulation. The performance of the suspension systems on the new Range Rover is further enhanced by the use of advanced chassis technologies to optimise vehicle dynamics, including the latest two-channel Dynamic Response active lean control system (standard on SDV8 and LR-V8 S/C models), and Adaptive Dynamics, featuring continuously variable dampers. Outstanding traction is delivered by the Range Rover’s proven full-time intelligent 4WD system, with a 50/50 torque split and a two-speed transfer box providing a low-range option for difficult off-road conditions or towing. To further optimise traction and stability in extreme conditions, customers can also specify an Active Rear Locking Differential on SDV8 and LR-V8 S/C models.

he new Range Rover introduces the next generation of Land Rover’s multi-award winning Terrain Response® system. In a world first, the system is now able to automatically detect the type of terrain the vehicle is traversing and seamlessly optimise traction and performance abilities for the prevailing conditions. The system is governed by an Integrated Suspension Control Module (ISCM) and controlled via the rotary Terrain Response® switch in the centre console. The driver is still able to choose from a set of discrete operating modes including General Driving, Grass/ Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, Sand and Rock Crawl by rotating the switch. However, pushing the top of the rotary control selects Auto mode. The system then uses a number of inputs, including ambient temperature, engine torque, transmission gear, suspension travel and even altitude to determine over what type of surface it is travelling. Terrain Response® 2 then calculates the optimum settings necessary for uninterrupted operation and instructs the various systems of the car – including the transfer case, transmission, torque delivery, ABS and traction control settings – to alter their parameters accordingly. Even when operating in one of the other programmes, the system can suggest to the driver when a different mode would be more appropriate. Design and engineering solutions have also contributed to the Range Rover’s unrivalled off-road abilities with both departure and approach angles having been increased over the outgoing models. Rethinking the air intake system and repositioning it to the top of the front wings has increased the wading depth by 200mm to an unmatched 900mm.

DYNAMIC RESPONSE Optimising the new Range Rover’s on-road handling is a new two-channel Dynamic Response system which actively reduces body roll during cornering through the action of electro-hydraulic stabiliser bars. By acting independently on the front and rear axles, the system is also able to increase both comfort and agility by altering the vehicle’s behaviour. The system’s control module constantly monitors inputs from a pair of accelerometers – mounted at roof and chassis level respectively – plus steering angle and vehicle speed. When cornering forces are detected, electronically actuated pressure control valves apply a hydraulically generated rotational torque to the stabiliser bars to oppose the lateral cornering force. With cornering forces of up to 0.4g, Dynamic Response will almost entirely neutralise body roll. As this threshold is breached, the system allows controlled, progressive lean to occur but to a much lesser degree than a passive system. Because the system is able to act independently on the front and rear axles, it is also able to alter the handling balance of the vehicle, giving it both greater agility during low-speed manoeuvring and high-speed stability. By altering the stiffness front to rear, Dynamic Response also improves comfort on uneven road surfaces by reducing ‘head toss’ induced by pitch movements. The Dynamic Response system automatically detects off-road conditions and at speeds below 25mph (40km/h) reduces the level of roll compensation in order to provide greater axle articulation and tyre contact with the terrain. When traversing a side slope of greater than 11 degrees, the system automatically locks the stabiliser bars for increased stability.

Blind spot monitoring offers a significant benefit in terms of safety and driver awareness by detecting when a vehicle is within a defined five-metre zone to the side and rear of the new Range Rover and highlighting this fact through the use of a solid amber warning light in the relevant external side mirror. The functionality of this radar-based programme has been significantly improved in the new Range Rover by extending the system’s field of view as far back as 73 metres away (see illustration). This allows it to monitor for the approach of fast-moving vehicles and if the possibility of a collision threat is detected within five seconds, a flashing amber alert will appear in the appropriate side mirror. ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL WITH QUEUE ASSIST The radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control has been given greater functionality with the introduction of a Queue Assist function which will bring the car to a complete, controlled halt from motorway speeds. When traffic in front clears, the driver merely has to depress the throttle for more than 0.5 seconds to resume the Adaptive Cruise Control function which automatically maintains a safe gap to the vehicle in front.

The rear-mounted radar system is also used in slow manoeuvring situations, for instance when reversing out of a parking space or driveway. The twin radars, mounted in each corner of the rear bumper, scan for approaching vehicles and are able to detect them before they are within the driver’s sightline. The system then plays an audible warning on the side of the vehicle from which the approaching object has been detected and displays an alert within the rear view camera display on the centre touchscreen.
VEHICLE A – has entered the five-metre Blind Spot zone causing a solidly lit Blind Spot Alert in the relevant mirror irrespective of speed. VEHICLE B – is being tracked and monitored by both radar sensors and data is used for an alignment check. VEHICLE C – is fast moving, with a relevant velocity of less than five seconds to collision. This would cause a flashing alert as it enters the close vehicle warning zone of up to 73 metres away, followed by a solid blind spot alert when the five-metre zone, is entered.

COMMAND DRIVING POSITION The Command Driving Position, which provides drivers with a supreme sense of confidence and control whatever the road conditions, is an essential part of the Range Rover DNA. Like its predecessors, the new Range Rover places the driver in an elevated, upright seating position which offers class-leading all-round visibility. The sense of control offered by the elevated driving position is enhanced by the vehicle’s outboard seating location with clear visibility to the side, and outstanding forward visibility over the characteristic sunken profile of the bonnet. ENGINEERED FOR TOTAL CAPABILITY From the very start of the development process, the new Range Rover has been designed and engineered to deliver the incredible breadth of capability which the marque is famous for, from the ability to tackle the toughest terrains to its class-leading towing capacity. The new Range Rover features enhanced body geometry for all-terrain conditions, and provides 17mm more ground clearance at 303mm (measured at the off-road ride height), and improved approach and departure angles. Wading depth has also improved significantly to 900mm, an increase of 200mm. The new Range Rover further improves the model’s position as the best towing vehicle in its class with a 3500kg trailer capability, and the availability of a new electrically deployable towbar. With an unprecedented engineering development process using state-of-the-art virtual simulation tools, followed by the Land Rover’s punishing on- and off-road test and development regime, the new Range Rover has been engineered to achieve exceptional durability and reliability. Well over 20,000 physical tests have been completed across all components and systems, with a fleet of development vehicles covering countless thousands of miles over 18 months of arduous tests in over 20 countries with extremes of climate and road surfaces.
EFFORTLESS PERFORMANCE AND IMPERIOUS REFINEMENT The new Range Rover delivers effortless performance and imperious refinement with its highly acclaimed line-up of torque-rich petrol and diesel engines. The vehicle’s lightweight aluminium platform has helped to deliver significant enhancements in performance, fuel economy and CO2 emissions. Customers have the choice of three powerful V8 petrol and diesel engines, and the sophisticated new 3.0-litre 258PS TDV6 diesel with outstanding CO2 emissions of 196g/km. The incomparable 510PS 5.0-litre LR-V8 supercharged engine retains its place at the pinnacle of the Range Rover line-up. With huge reserves of power and torque, this engine delivers a 0-60mph time of 5.1 seconds (0.8 seconds faster than the outgoing model). The sophisticated 375PS 5.0-litre LR-V8 petrol engine provides a compelling combination of smooth, responsive performance and immaculate refinement, with a 0-60mph time of just 6.5 seconds, 0.7 seconds faster than the outgoing model. The magnificent 339PS 4.4-litre SDV8 ‘super-diesel’, designed exclusively for the Range Rover, benefits from a 9 per cent power boost, and now accelerates from 0-60 in 6.5 seconds, a full second faster than the outgoing model. The engine’s outstanding fuel efficiency is reflected in CO2 emissions of 229g/km, a reduction of 10 per cent. Available in the Range Rover for the first time, the refined and ultra-efficient 258PS 3.0-litre TDV6 diesel delivers effortless performance – matching the outgoing TDV8 model with 0-60mph in just 7.4 seconds – while cutting fuel consumption and CO2 emissions by an amazing 22 per cent when equipped with stop/start, achieving 196g/km. All engines in the new Range Rover are paired with the advanced electronically controlled ZF 8HP70 8-speed automatic gearbox, which has been tuned by Range Rover engineers to combine silky-smooth shifting with exceptionally rapid response and outstanding fuel economy. Later in 2013, the engine line-up will be further boosted with the introduction of a state-of-the-art diesel hybrid powertrain designed to combine exceptional fuel efficiency (target CO2 169g/km), with outstanding refinement and effortless performance.

WORLD’S FIRST SUV WITH ALUMINIUM CONSTRUCTION The new Range Rover is the world’s first SUV to feature an advanced all-aluminium body structure, delivering significantly reduced weight, improved performance and enhanced sustainability credentials. The all-aluminium monocoque body structure in the new Range Rover is 39 per cent lighter than the steel body in the current, representing a weight saving of over 180kg for the bodyshell alone. Not only the lightest in its class by a significant margin, the aluminium structure is also incredibly strong too. The body has been engineered to withstand the same punishing off-road impacts as all Land Rovers. The lightweight aluminium body structure has been subjected to the most extensive development and optimisation process ever undertaken by Land Rover. Unprecedented use of state-ofthe-art computer simulation tools – demanding well over 1000 years of processor time – has resulted in an incredibly efficient structure. The structure employs a combination of pressed panels, plus cast, extruded and rolled aluminium alloy parts, so the strength is concentrated precisely where the loads are greatest. LIGHTWEIGHT TECHNOLOGIES CUT WEIGHT BY 420KG Land Rover engineers have combined the state-of-the-art lightweight structure with substantial weight reductions throughout the vehicle, to deliver total weight savings up to an incredible 420kg. The reduced vehicle weight has enabled the lighter TDV6 engine to be introduced, while delivering the same effortless performance as the outgoing TDV8 model. A total of 420kg lighter, the new TDV6 Range Rover achieves an overall reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of up to 22 per cent. Range Rover engineers achieved the dramatic weight reduction through an incredibly rigorous development and optimisation process in which every possible weight saving opportunity was aggressively pursued. In addition to the lightweight aluminium body construction, the key weight-saving technologies in the vehicle include an
all-new front and rear suspension design with all-aluminium front and rear subframes, all-new aluminium final drive units and optimised driveline components, and high precision lightweight magnesium castings used for the cross car beam and front end carrier. MOST AERODYNAMIC RANGE ROVER EVER With its more streamlined and rounded profile, the new model is the most aerodynamic Range Rover ever, achieving a drag coefficient (Cd) of 0.34, a 10 per cent improvement compared to the outgoing vehicle. The aerodynamic performance was optimised during an intensive development effort using state-of-the-art computational fluid dynamics simulation tools, involving the equivalent of 1.5 million hours (or over 170 years) of processor time. Among the special aerodynamic innovations which were optimised during the development process are active vanes in the main grille aperture (on TDV6 models in Europe), aerodynamic underfloor panelling and detailed optimisation of the bodyshell, glazing and mirrors. In order to minimise the car’s overall ecological impact, the new Range Rover has been designed with a lifecycle approach, aiming to minimise the environmental impact by considering the entire lifecycle of the vehicle: from development and manufacturing, through customer use, to end-of-life recycling and re-use. The development process has included a full lifecycle assessment in line with ISO 14040/14044. SMART DRIVER ASSISTANCE TECHNOLOGIES The new Range Rover is packed with smart, relevant technologies to ensure that drivers enjoy a relaxed and stress-free experience behind the wheel. The latest driver assistance features include an enhanced Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) which operates even when the vehicle is travelling slowly or is stationary. The new Queue Assist feature extends the ACC function to allow the vehicle to come to a stop when it reaches a traffic queue, and then resume operation when the car in front moves off and the driver briefly touches the accelerator.

To offer enhanced awareness in today’s congested traffic conditions, Range Rover drivers can also specify advanced new technologies to alert them to nearby vehicles which could create a hazard, including Blind Spot Monitoring, Closing Vehicle Sensing and Reverse Traffic Detection. Other driver assistance technologies which help to reduce stress behind the wheel include the Adjustable Speed Limiter Device, the latest Surround Camera System incorporating T-junction view, trailer reverse park guidance and trailer hitch guidance, and headlamps with Automatic High Beam Assist and Adaptive Xenon lighting. The new Range Rover adopts the latest electric powerassisted steering (EPAS) technology, which helps to reduce overall vehicle CO2 emissions. The new technology also enables customers to benefit from the Park Assist feature, which helps to identify a suitable parallel parking space, and then automatically steers the vehicle into place. ENHANCED ACTIVE AND PASSIVE SAFETY The new Range Rover has been engineered with a powerful all-disc braking system for confident stopping in all conditions, featuring six-piston lightweight Brembo calipers on the front brakes for enhanced performance and reduced weight. The impressive stopping power of the new Range Rover is complemented by a comprehensive suite of active safety technologies, designed to enhance braking, stability and traction. For the first time, the Range Rover is available with Intelligent Emergency Braking. Included on vehicles fitted with Adaptive Cruise Control, this new feature can help drivers avoid a collision if the traffic ahead slows quickly or another vehicle suddenly moves into their lane. The new Range Rover has been engineered to meet and exceed the most stringent global safety standards. Its optimised aluminium body structure protects occupants using an incredibly strong and stable safety cell, which includes features such as the use of high strength AC300 aluminium within the crash structure and a composite reinforced B-post area to minimise intrusion in side impacts. Vehicle crash performance has been verified via a rigorous programme of 70 full vehicle crash tests and over 20 sled tests.

85% CARBON-CONSCIOUS CONSTRUCTION In order to create a sustainable, responsible product for an increasingly carbon-conscious world, a holistic approach was taken in designing and engineering the new Range Rover. RECYCLED MATERIAL USE The decision to construct the car in aluminium was based on more than a decade’s worth of expertise within Jaguar Land Rover and the huge sustainability benefits that the lightweight material brings, long before the car even drives off the production line. Land Rover has implemented a closed-loop recycling policy, and is extending it to suppliers, ensuring all surplus metal is returned to the system, greatly reducing the amount of new material needed. Recycling aluminium requires just five per cent of the energy needed to smelt it. Currently the new Range Rover contains 50 per cent recycled metal, with a future target of 75 per cent. Aeronautical-inspired construction also means the metal can be bonded and riveted rather than welded, so substantial energy savings are made during manufacture. RESPONSIBLE PERFORMANCE Weight reduction is itself a virtuous circle. Lighter by up to 420kg, the new Range Rover is available with smaller, more efficient engines that offer both increased economy and superior performance. This is demonstrated by Land Rover’s Life Cycle Analysis work which demonstrates a 25% reduction in the new TDV6 model’s carbon footprint over the vehicle’s lifetime in comparison with the previous generation TDV8.

RECYCLING AT SOURCE BRIDGE OF WEIR LEATHER Having constructed such a cutting-edge car, the interior materials choice was crucial in order to increase its sustainability without compromising luxury. Leather is one of the original recycled materials – for millennia it has been a by-product of farming but its manufacture has been highly resource intensive. However, supplier Bridge of Weir has created one of the most sustainable manufacturing processes in the world. Located in Scotland, the factory has its own thermal energy plant providing 70 per cent of its needs, with a target of 100 per cent by 2015. In addition, all waste products of the tanning process are recycled, with oils being converted into biodiesel and ash used to make house bricks. Even the offcuts are recycled into clothing accessories such as belts. RENEWABLES AND RECYCLABILITY Land Rover’s Life Cycle Analysis programme was also used to identify other areas where gains could be made. So, as well as featuring more than 40kg of renewable materials, each vehicle also contains 33.9kg of recycled plastics. Over the lifetime of the product, this will divert nearly 9500 tonnes of waste from land fill, equivalent to 3795 Range Rover’s worth of material. In addition, 85 per cent of the Range Rover can be recycled at the end of its life, while a full 95 per cent of the car is recoverable.

ange Rovers are renowned for providing a level of refinement and luxury which gives the occupants the sensation of serene isolation from the hectic world outside. In developing the new model, Land Rover engineers set out to capture that same feeling, but also to enhance the experience for both passengers and driver. Nick Rogers, Range Rover Vehicle Line Director, explains the process: “The state-of-art new platform and suspension architecture has enabled our engineers to take the Range Rover to a new level of refinement and driving dynamics. Customers will immediately notice the lower noise levels and more supple ride, while the extra room to stretch in the rear will come as a revelation.� REDUCED NOISE LEVELS FOR A SERENE CABIN At every stage of the development process, Land Rover engineers have applied meticulous attention to detail to ensure that the new model meets the highest luxury car standards for refinement, providing occupants with an imperious isolation from the external environment. All unwanted sounds and traces of harshness have been eliminated through the use of advanced computer simulations early in the engineering phase, followed by painstaking optimisation with test cells using sophisticated analysis tools like specialised acoustic cameras. Features contributing to the reduced noise levels include the use of new dual-isolated engine mounts on the diesel models; a special acoustic lamination applied to the windscreen and front/rear side door glass helps to further reduce combustion noise as well as wind noise and extensive optimisation of the Range Rover’s all-new aluminium body structure to achieve outstanding stiffness and refinement. Other innovative solutions to enhance refinement include the use of sound-absorbing foam ducts for the HVAC system, in place of hard plastic, and the mounting of the air suspension compressor on the main vehicle battery to damp unwanted vibrations.

SUPERIOR RIDE AND HANDLING From the driver’s seat, a Range Rover is supremely composed, delivering effortless performance with a sense of power in reserve. The new Range Rover’s state-of-the-art chassis, with its all-new lightweight suspension architecture and advanced chassis technologies, has been meticulously tuned to offer serene, confident progress in all conditions. With its classleading suspension travel and four-corner air springs, the suspension system combines supreme poise and stability with exceptional ride isolation on all surfaces. To further enhance the characteristic Range Rover imperious ride quality, new front air springs have been introduced which use a thinner, suppler material, and are able to absorb small road irregularities much more effectively. A key benefit of the advanced new suspension concept, however, with its wide-spaced double-wishbone design at the front and an advanced multi-link layout at the rear, is the ability to combine traditional Range Rover ride quality and refinement with more composed and balanced handling. Thus, while the luxurious ride has been retained, the vehicle’s handling and agility have been transformed. The new suspension architecture delivers flatter, more confident cornering, with natural and intuitive steering feel. MORE SPACIOUS REAR FOR EXECUTIVE CLASS LUXURY Providing enhanced rear seat luxury was a major priority for the new Range Rover, and the new model raises the experience for rear seat passengers to a new level, with more space, more comfort, and the exclusive Executive Class seating option. Optimising the vehicle package around a 42mm longer wheelbase has enabled rear seat accommodation to be vastly improved, without compromise for front row occupants. Legroom has been increased by 118mm, giving well over a metre of stretching room, while knee room now matches best in class. A slightly lower rear seating position, along with a larger door aperture, has also significantly improved the ease of ingress and egress. Rear seat comfort has also been enhanced by the availability of rear seats with either manual or power recline, together with a vastly improved second row climate control system with up to eight vents providing air flow to occupants. For the ultimate in rear seat luxury, the new Executive Class seating option provides supreme comfort and convenience, with two individual rear seats which offer memory functionality, massage, an enhanced range of movement including a full nine degrees of recline (two more than the standard seats), and an extended centre console finished in the finest veneer. The lavish ambience is also enhanced by the luxurious central armrest with coolbox option, four-zone climate control with individual temperature controls, and the sophisticated mood lighting along the console.
PREMIUM FEATURES AND EXCLUSIVE MERIDIAN AUDIO Building on the tradition of its predecessors, the new Range Rover has been developed to offer the ultimate in luxury for its occupants, combining the latest premium features and technologies with immaculate craftsmanship and materials, all delivered with the unique Range Rover ambience. Promising total listening pleasure in all seating positions, the new Range Rover features exclusive new state-of-the-art audio systems developed with Meridian, a world leader in audio technologies and digital sound processing. Three levels of branded Meridian system are available, up to the stunning 1700W Signature Reference system which has 29 speakers including a subwoofer, and has been specially developed to offer the ultimate 3D surround sound experience. To ensure that the interior is maintained at the perfect temperature, the new Range Rover features a completely new climate control system which is based on class-leading technology, with the choice of a three-zone system or a premium four-zone system with an additional climate control unit in the rear compartment. The result of an incredibly rigorous development programme using Computational Fluid Dynamics simulation tools, the new system has been tested in punishing real-world conditions in temperatures ranging from +50 to -30 deg C. For an even more luxurious travelling experience, the new Range Rover offers a full-size sliding panoramic glass roof – the largest ever fitted to a Range Rover – to create a truly special sensation of space and light for all occupants.
