journals and makes a measurable difference to professionals, practitioners, policy-makers and governments. Students at Cass, from undergraduates to executives, are immersed in a dynamic learning environment that challenges them, demands that they dissect their own practice and prepares them for leadership. Our courses reflect the changing needs of business: we are swift to spot changes and reflect them in new courses and electives.

There is so much going on at Cass: be a part of it.

We draw people from all over the world and our global connections ensure that our students are immersed in a truly international environment. Our enviable location means we are perfectly positioned to support the diverse interests of one of the world’s most powerful business and finance capitals. Naturally, living next door to London’s rich mix of the world’s leading businesses, professional services and financial institutions informs our education and research strengths. And we have strong connections to our neighbours in Tech City, London’s innovative technology hub. Our goal is to provide support to world class businesses with world-leading thinking. Our research is ground-breaking and, through our partnerships with leading organisations, has a demonstrable impact on business and society. Our academics have a breadth of skills and interests that mean that – unlike some business schools – our research is both academic and applied. Our work appears in the best academic

The Professional Placement Programme Connecting you with young business talent

The one year Professional Placement Programme provides a vital part of our ‘practice and theory ethos’. We think of it as a ‘win win’ for us, for you, and for our students. Our students are selected from some of the best in the world, our entry requirements are AAA at A level (with Actuarial Science asking for A*AA). By the time they undertake placements, they will have benefited from two years of high quality business education. This is often in specialised and current issues such as risk and ethics. In an increasingly competitive jobs market, our students know they need to stand out from the crowd and gain valuable work experience. A Professional Placement allows them to apply the theory they have learned to a real-life business situation, in addition to developing the softer skills that are so valued by employers.

Key facts about the Professional Placement Programme: Duration: Your student must be employed for a minimum of nine months. Timescales: Your student will be ready to undertake a placement from mid June. Pay: You are expected to pay your placement student a salary. Salaries in 2012 ranged from £15,000 to £34,000 per annum depending on the industry, with the average in 2012 being £23,000. Employing an international student: Our international students on a tier 4 visa do not require a work permit to undertake a placement. This is due to the placement year being an approved part of their degree programme.

Areas of work: Our students are all bright individuals. Specific areas in which they are able to contribute are: > Accounting > Actuarial > Analysis and statistical modelling > Banking > Derivatives, trading and hedging > Financial reporting > Human Resource Management > Insurance > Investment Management > Marketing > Operations Management > Risk Analysis and Modelling > Security Analysis > Taxation *This is not an exhaustive list. Within these areas, students have undertaken roles such as: Accounts Executive, Actuarial Trainee, Analytics and Reporting Intern, Assurance Trainee, Audit Assistant, Business Development Intern, Finance Analyst, HR Administrator, Investment intern, Private Equity Intern, Marketing Communications Intern, Portfolio Management Intern , Prime Brokerage Analyst, Project Assistant, Risk Control Intern, Sales & Customer Service Executive, Statistical Assistant, Trainee Equity Trader, Trainee Relationship Manager. Internships: Should you have shorter term projects many of Cass Business School’s undergraduate students are very interested in internships. These are usually shorter work placements of between one and three months’ duration, during the summer break. Our Professional Placements Fair: In October each year, we organise a ‘Professional Placement and Summer Internship Fair’ which is an opportunity for employers and students to meet and discuss potential opportunities. We would be extremely grateful if our students undertaking

placements with you are allowed to attend this day.

“In recent years, our Operations and Finance Divisions have worked with a number of Cass Business School students from a variety of courses and the feedback from managers and teams has been extremely positive. Professional Placement students add a large amount of value to our organisation – taking on challenging responsibilities and real projects which directly impact the success of the business.” Sarah Barker, Infrastructure Campus Recruitment Manager. Morgan Stanley

How Does it Work?

Step 1 - Send us your vacancy details

Step 4 - Provide a contract

You can do this at any point in the year between October and August, however, the core period for advertising is between October and February. Our students are ready to commence employment from mid-June. All you need to do is provide a job description, any specific selection criteria, an application deadline and salary details.

Once you have selected a Cass student, we ask that you provide them with a contract stating the terms and conditions of their employment and salary details.

Step 2 - We’ll promote it

We request that the placement student has a line manager who will monitor performance and give guidance, support and feedback as necessary. This person is also expected to be the point of contact for the students’ Personal Tutor visit, which takes place at your organisation, ideally between January and March. Cass students are expected to complete a Personal Development Plan throughout their placement, which will be reviewed and submitted to the Professional Placements Team.

We will promote your job opportunity to our students via our online portal, email, and our official facebook page. Should you wish to promote opportunities by delivering a presentation at Cass, we would be delighted to organise this for you.

Step 3 - Shortlist and interview the best After your application deadline, we can collate the applications and forward them to you for shortlisting and selection. We are happy to liaise between yourselves and our students on the outcome of their application - as well as arranging interviews at Cass, should you prefer.

Step 5 - Allocate a Manager

Step 6 - Feedback Towards the end of the placement, we will ask the Manager to complete and return an appraisal form. Upon successful completion of the placement and following graduation, the student’s degree certificate will be endorsed to confirm they have completed a professional placement year.

What our students think

“Upon my graduation I have been offered a job with a boutique M&A/Consulting advisory firm in London. One of the reasons why Cass was so appealing to me was the opportunity to undertake a placement year. I felt it was a great channel to get real world experience and that it would be a stellar opportunity to enhance my CV and experiences, all while broadening my network and earning a decent salary. The support in place at Cass was truly helpful and in fact proved integral in assisting me to find my placement spot. The team at Cass aid students on everything from CV editing, interview help and visa issues. They also are extremely helpful in keeping students fully up to date on job opportunities and various seminars that are being hosted by the banks/corporations. ”

“Being given the responsibility of overlooking a fixed income derivatives market gave me a lot of confidence in my ability to work within a top investment bank such as Morgan Stanley.”

Usman Khan BSc Management Graduate

“Being encouraged to take out a placement year has been the best decision I have made to support the success of my future career. I took on a high responsibility, dynamic role in marketing. The lean structure of L’Oreal meant that my role included much more than just marketing, and included logistics, supply chain, finance, events, design and insalon education. Some of the highlights of my year have been presenting new product launches to the UK and Ireland sales team every 6 weeks, designing and printing the first brand book and launching 5 new product ranges. After an incredibly fast paced year I have been offered to stay on with L’Oreal as a freelance educator whilst I complete my final year at Cass and will also look forward to joining them back full time on the management trainee scheme once graduating. Taking a placement year is no doubt a fantastic way to prepare you for your final year and to give you a headstart in your career.” Jade Sarkhel BSc (Hons) Business Studies
