President’s Message Carol Walker, FDPE, FSA, FED
So here we are. Who’d have thought the “party girl” would end up climbing the ranks and making her way to the top of the FPP ladder? Blinkies for everyone! But first… I’d like to thank Past President and current Vice President, Cindy Strickland, for her calm and collected leadership this past year. Cindy never hesitates to step up and help out where needed and her agreeing to stay on the Executive Board as Vice President this year is a huge asset for us all! Thank you Cindy for your wisdom and guidance and to the rest of the Board for your levels of commitment and ‘forward thinking’ for the FPP. I am truly surrounded by a phenomenal group of people! I deeply appreciate the vote of confidence from not only my Board, but from you, the members. I was overwhelmed by the outpour of support as people congratulated me after the awards ceremony at FOCUS. But I was especially taken aback by the comments and common expectations that I am going to build the FPP back up and increase the membership this year. ME. Ladies and gentlemen…I don’t have a magic wand. But what I do seem to have is your attention. And your support. And from this revelation, my Presidential “theme” for this year was born: ONE. You say you want big name speakers; photo safaris; a kick-a** wrap party; a hospitality suite; a membership of 600+ like it ‘used to be’. Well...you can have it. All of that and more. Like Jerry Maguire said “help me help you”. Just bring me “ONE”. One new member. That’s all I’m asking. It’s pretty simple, really. A grassroots campaign. If each one of you can bring one new member, imagine the possibilities! This isn’t about what I can do, or what the Board can do-- own it! This is your FPP. I am not a numbers person, but it makes sense to me that we could DOUBLE our membership in no time and you’d have everything you’ve asked for. Each and every one of you knows someone who’s not an FPP member. There are more photographers out there now than ever before. Talk to them. Anyone who’s attended FOCUS, taken a class at the Florida Photography Workshops or been to the Spring or Fall Seminars knows that education is only a small part of what we have to offer. The real value is in the relationships; the networking; the support; the community. We learn the most from each other. So let’s add ONE more. We recently had David Trust, CEO of the Professional Photographers of America (yes, the “mother ship”) down for an all-day seminar on Leadership Training. David saw first-hand how we roll. During dinner one evening we got the call that our school director, Marybeth Jackson had a family emergency that turned her inside out. It was three weeks until the Florida Photography Workshops. David watched in awe as we sprang into action, making calls, clearing schedules and taking everything we possibly could off her shoulders.
The next day at the seminar, he asked us “what is the greatest benefit that the FPP has to offer its members?” When we all chimed in “education” he said “No. You’re WRONG. What you have here is something PPA will never be able to offer their members”. (He said that, I swear!) “People can get photography education anywhere these days. What you have is relationships. You have an incredibly powerful support network for each other and PPA can’t offer that. That is your greatest asset-- you’re a family.” Wow. Your Board is working hard to build the relationships between the affiliates and the FPP, to increase membership on BOTH sides with the new “Discover the FPP” program. We’ve created group discounts for seminars, for both affiliates AND meet-up groups. So here’s what you can do: bring a friend. ONE friend. ONE event. Between us, we can show them the value and benefits of becoming ONE of us. And you can have everything you’ve asked for. When I was President of TAPPA several years ago, I said “every President needs a theme song”. How apropos that my favorite band, U2, would have the perfect song for this year: “We’re one, but we’re not the same. We get to carry each other, carry each other. One....” Let’s do this. One. By. ONE.

FPP Member Spotlight:
Meggan Harper, FED
Vasi Siedman has been an FPP member for a little over four years, during which she has been an active volunteer. At FOCUS 2016 she received the Theresa Saylor Award for her continued service to the organization. Originally from Bulgaria, Vasi was inspired to pursue a photography career by her grandfather who was a photographer during World War She started her career being mentored by and working with fellow FPP member, Bill Barbosa.
II.
About a year ago, Vasi opened her own business, VIS Studio, in Palm Beach Gardens with a specialty in pet portraits. She has a home studio but often works on location and in client’s homes. While Vasi admits there were challenges in the beginning, she is quick to state that she leaned on fellow photographers for their support, knowledge and guidance. Find her online at visstudiofl.com or by phone at 561.307.9875. She is a delegate to the Professional Photography Guild of the Palm Beaches and a member of the Florida Professional Photographers.
“Photographing animals is so much different than photographing people. One of my biggest challenges is trying to educate my clients about what is involved in a pet photo session. Pets can get nervous just like people, so it’s important to have some of their favorite treats or toys on hand to make them feel more comofortable, especially if the session takes place in unfamiliar surroundings.”
When asked what she felt were the biggest benefits of being a member of FPP her response was “being a member of FPP has helped me meet many leaders in our industry. Also, joining PPA and my local photography guild has helped me keep up with new products and technology coming out in the market. This helps me to educate my clients about the value of what a professional photographer provides and the beautiful products we offer. For the new photographers entering the market...I highly recommend investing in your photographic education and joining FPP should be at the top of your list! I am so proud to be part of the FPP family. Education and passion are keys to success. Let’s accomplish it together.”
The Backup Plan
Charlotte Fristoe
Wedding photographers have a lot of risk to manage: the loss of wedding images, photography gear malfunction, variable income, bad weather, illness or accident…the list just goes on and on! For the past five years, I’ve continued to add contingencies to my master back up plan to manage risk and have a plan for if something goes wrong. I never imagined I’d have to actually use it. That was until the day my brain exploded. Okay, so my brain didn’t really explode, but that is what it felt like when I suffered from a ruptured brain aneurysm while photographing a wedding. Somehow, I managed to photograph the rest of the wedding without many people realizing something was wrong with me. Once my husband forced me to go to the ER, they took me into surgery so quickly that I didn’t even have a chance to hug my three boys; much less worry about my wedding photography business. Luckily for me, I had a back-up plan for an event like this and it wouldn’t have been possible without the Tallahassee Professional Photographer’s Guild (TPPG). The day after my surgery, my mom made a few short phone calls to several TPPG members to secure replacement photographers for my upcoming weddings. Within 10 minutes my mom was able to make two phone calls to secure Kylene & Ryan Gay, Linda Long, and Steve Saccio as my replacements. Finally, I could rest knowing my weddings were covered. Little did I know that help from TPPG wouldn’t stop there. Word quickly spread about what happened to me and that was when TPPG stepped up to help me in ways I never expected them to. It all started when Kira Derryberry, the president of TPPG, came to visit me in ICU. During her visit, she overheard how much I would pay out of pocket for medication when I left the hospital and that I would be unable to return to work for 4-8 weeks, at the earliest. Unbeknownst to me, Kira left the hospital that day and went to a TPPG board meeting. They discussed my situation and started a fundraiser that night to cover the out of pocket expense for my medication. They almost tripled the goal within two days! The help didn’t stop there. Once the word spread about what happened so many people stepped in to help my business continue as normal. Kate Bellflower
photographed two newborn sessions for clients who went into labor while I was ICU. Nina Atkinson and Lauren Womble surprised me by paying my photography studio rent. When I insisted on paying anyone back for the work they did the response was the same: they would not benefit from my misfortune. What a powerful statement. When I originally joined the Tallahassee Professional Photographers Guild, my expectations were simply to learn and become a better photographer. My guild has always been much more than that to me though. This is my family, my community, where support and love is unconditional and we value relationships over competition. I can only hope that every photographer has a back-up plan that includes the support from their local photography guild because without my local guild, I don’t know what would have happened to the photography business I worked so hard to build.
DISCOVER FPP Bill Barbosa, CPP, FSA, FED Director of Membership, FPP
Our Board of Directors have been working very hard to provide our members benefits that will help you and our Affiliates. We have come up with the Discover FPP program and during the next several months we will sending out new benefits for our members and Affiliates alike. I am very proud to showcase our 2nd program: DISCOVER FPP - Affiliate Referral Program The FPP and Affiliates should have a supportive, symbiotic relationship. In order for both affiliates and FPP to help each other, the FPP has created the Affiliate Referral Program. The details are as follows. DISCOVER the FPP with Affiliates! Members of affiliates qualify for special 20% off first time member pricing with the FPP! To qualify the applicant must be a current member in good standing with their local FPP affiliate. They must also have never been a member of the FPP. After their first year, regular annual rates apply. To thank affiliates for the referral, the FPP will return a $15 referral fee per referred member back to the affiliate. Affiliate payouts will be rewarded as credits at the end of the year to go towards the annual affiliate fee. For example, if Guild A refers 3 new members to the FPP, the FPP will credit $45 towards the annual affiliate fee at the end of the year. Guild A would now only pay the difference to renew their FPP Affiliate status. The cap for referral credits is 9 referrals per calendar year and a maximum pay out of a $120 credit. This credit would reset at the close of each calendar year. The deadline for affiliate referrals for a calendar year is November 30th. Any referrals during the month of December will be credited to the following calendar year affiliate renewal. Any members who sign up for a new membership through the affiliate will count as a referral. Current FPP members renewing their memberships must do so through the FPP website and do not count as a referral. Sending Referrals Each affiliate will be provided an initial set of physical forms for a guild member to fill out for new FPP
membership. The form will have a place for credit card number or checks can be made out to the Florida Professional Photographers. These forms must be sent to the Executive Director’s office. The FPP will process all payments and contact the new member with new FPP member information. Additional forms will be available to download as a PDF on the FPP website.
The FPP can also refer new members to local affiliates! Any new member who signs up through the FPP office will receive a 20% off discount IF they also join their local affiliate guild. It is up to the new member to let the FPP office know when they have signed up for the local affiliate and will be pending verification prior to the 20% refund.
The FPP Board of Directors is excited to introduce this new affiliate offer as one of the many ways new folks can DISCOVER the FPP.
With this or other Discover FPP programs come out and you our members have questions please do not hesitate to contact me directly at info@billbarbosaphotography.com or 561-704-4200.
FOCUS 2016 Debbie Alcorn, FSA, FED, PP, CM Convention Manager, FOCUS
I don’t know about y’all but I find it so hard to believe FOCUS 2016 is over! It’s kind of like Thanksgiving dinner; it takes all day to cook and ten minutes to eat. All year to plan and the fun is over in just three short days! Speaking of fun, I really had a blast and from what I could see so did everyone else. We could not have FOCUS of any kind without mass amounts of help. The FPP Board and Executive Director worked so hard at making everything run like a well-oiled machine and it certainly did. Our two Assistant Managers, Darla Sharp and Bruce Wilson, pulled together great Committee Chairs to get all the “behind the scenes” work done. For future reference these are the people that get it done: Door Prize- Charlotte Fristoe Flea Market-Ken Moran FPP School Booth-Marybeth Jackson New Members-Tammy Czigan Photography-Marti Newkirk Sergeant at Arms-Bill Cadzow Scholarship & Mentor-Marybeth Jackson Coffee House Devotions-Rob Moorman Welcome-Glenn Nielson Audio Visual-Jackson Koontz III Host-Susan Torregrosa Equipment-Ed Robinson Signs-Karen Barnett Social Media-Kira Derryberry These Chair People each had a team of volunteers getting things done for us. A GIANT thank you goes out to each and every one. We couldn’t do it without you
How about those Speakers? Our line-up kept us informed and entertained, each one brought something special to the table. I hope everyone enjoyed them as much as I did. If for some crazy reason you were unable to attend FOCUS, here’s who you missed:

Print Competition 2016 Al Audleman, M. Photog.Cr., CPP, API FDPE, FDAE, FSA, FED,GFD, GSD
Salon 2016 set some new records as we successfully completed judging in one day! Members benefited with a 44% merit ratio, with 175 out of 399 entries meriting.
Gregory Daniel earned the top award for Photographer of the Year and Randy Van Duinen was the Artist of the Year. Linda Long won the prestigious Becker Award for the image “Death Becomes Her” for the most creative image in the competition while Pete Wright took home the Susan & Stewart Powers Award for his album “Darwin’s Travels.” Print entries were at a premium this year as there were only 18 physical prints entered by a total of only three makers with Pete Wright dominating the category. There is currently discussion with FPP’s favorite labs to possibly provide display prints for each digital entry for 2017. These display prints will not be allowed in the print judging endnote eligible for any print awards but it will be a much better educational experience for those attending the convention and it will also make People’s Choice an easier choice. In the Photographic Open Category, 55 makers entered and average (4.27 entries per case). In the Electronic Imaging Category,12 Makers entered 65 images (5.4 images per case). Here’s a breakdown of the entries in each major category:
EI Entries - 65 - 33 merits (65%) Commercial Entries - 29 - 18 merits (62%) Illustrative Entries - 230 - 61 merits (26%) Portrait Entries - 151 - 69 merits (46%) Social Event Entries - 19 - 4 merits (21%) Albums - 1 - 1 merit (100%)
Congratulations to Linda Long for accepting the position of Competition Manager for 2017.

“After the Camera - Before the Print - Fine art techniques in Photoshop” Thom Rouse, M.Photog, Cr. DeKalb, IL
Use your passion for fine art as leverage for your business, marketing and bottom line. You’ll be working with your own images and applying a range of post-production techniques - step by step and layer by layer. You’ll leave with a full set of your own layered images as a reference for applying the techniques to other images. The techniques you learn will not only fuel your personal fine art images but provide opportunities for creating unique client images.
We’ll also explore our personal creative processes to find inspiration, push our creativity, and overcome creative blocks. We’ll discuss how pre-visualization and discovery are two sides of the same creative coin and how we can use both in image creation. And we’ll talk about enhancing our visual knowledge; we have to know what a good image looks like to make one. Everyone is creative!
Outcomes: • Photoshop techniques for fine art image creation • How creating art for art sake will benefit your business, enhance your marketing and increase your bottom line. • Using rules and making your own rules to leverage your creativity. (Creativity is a learned skill available to all of us (not just a few lucky souls).

Eric is a PPA Approved Instructor for Certification. He teaches several times during the year at PPA headquarters and also at schools and conventions teaching Certification preparatory classes. He also mentors those photographers who are preparing their images to submit for Certification after they have passed their written test. He will share his own testimony about the benefits and advantages of being a Certified Professional Photographer. (Eric served on the Certification Committee for many years and helped to write the judging criteria and develop the on-line judging for Certification.) The class for preparing to take the written exam for Certification is not difficult, but it is comprehensive.
It is recommended that students get the workbook that Al Audleman has authored, “The Road to Certification”. You may get the workbook by contacting Al at: al@asaphoto.com. (Mention that you are taking the class with Eric Richards to get a great discount on the workbook.)
