Exhibition Development
Exhibition I have decided to name my exhibition ‘ Mythology Reimagined’ taking inspiration from the Victoria And Albert museum’s Botticelli reimagined which looks at famous renaissance artwork. I am focussing the exhibition on mythological narrative and the representation of figures and gestures of mythological characters. As well as this I will focus on important and symbolic imagery within the paintings to use in my exhibition advertising.
Venus "Venus pudica" is a term used to describe a classic figural pose in Western art. It us shown in the birth of Venus by the goddess covering her nude body which shows class and elegance as well as elevating her beauty in the painting.
The Three Graces Grace is one of three or more minor goddesses of charm, beauty, nature, human creativity, and fertility, together known as the Charites or Graces. The Charites were usually considered the daughters of Zeus and Eurydome , although there are other thoughts of who may be their ‘parents’. In art, the three graces are depicted in many ways but they always show a bond or some sort of unity which makes them one .This is depicted by there gestures and positioning.
Significance of gesture/anatomy in artwork Within artwork, gestures are used to portray movement and emotion of characters, they can also portray relationships between characters , for example the unity of the three graces. These studies by Leonardo da Vinci show his intense attention to, even fascination with, anatomical correctness and the effects of light and shadow on the hands. To research gestures further I took some photos of my friends hands in different gestures to look at how they can show emotion. For example the tense, closed fists are more harsh and angry whereas the open hand is calm and relaxed
To develop ideas for exhibition advertising I have looked at posters both from the internet/ gallery websites and from primary resources, for example advertising design books. I would like the style of my advertising to use imagery from real paintings I have looked at along with a modern graphics and imagery.
V&A Exhibition Example
This exhibition dedicated to the works of Sandro Botticelli is held at the Victoria and Albert museum. The exhibition focusses on Botticelli's life and artwork through the years.” Telling a story 500 years in the making, Botticelli Reimagined will be the largest Botticelli exhibition in Britain since 1930.” the exhibition looks at painting, fashion, film, drawing, photography, tapestry, sculpture and print and explores the ways that artists and designers have reinterpreted Botticelli's work. It includes over 50 original works by Botticelli, as well as works by artists such as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, Edward Burne-Jones, William Morris, René Magritte, Elsa Schiaparelli, Andy Warhol and Cindy Sherman. 5 March 2016 - 3 July 2016: “This innovative exhibition will explore the enduring impact of the Florentine painter Sandro Botticelli (1445-1510) from the PreRaphaelites to today”.
Collage like , overlapping of imagery makes the poster interesting and is relevant to the theme of modern design
Bold, bright background made up of lots of relevant imagery, eye-catching and attracts viewer
Exhibition logo is large and bold which stands out from the busy background
White information box to contrast with bright colours , includes info on the exhibition e.g. title, date , location, contact details
Primary Research I have looked at the International poster design book , ‘Up Against The Wall’ written by Russell Bestley and Ian Noble to research poster designs. The first set of advertising posters I have looked at were produced in the UK to promote events for the design and education research project called ‘ We interrupt the Programme’ 1999-2000. The posters use photo shopped, manipulated imagery with bold text in a carefully chosen font which contrasts well with the imagery used. The posters are simple yet effective for their purpose of showing a modern approach to art, design and media.
I like these poster designs because they include both imagery and bold text which work well together. I also think the use of digital manipulation could be part of my poster designs; I will look at manipulating parts of mythological paintings and incorporating them into my posters along with a modern twist for example the font and graphics used .
To begin designing a poster for my exhibition I have looked at different fonts I could use. I have decided to use the image of the three graces (below) as my main image for the poster because in my opinion they show the most expression though gesture. I will also incorporate roses which are important symbolism in The birth of Venus. I Think the fonts would work well with the image because they are bold and give a modern ,edgy feel to the poster.

FONT 1 ; some words in bold
Poster Design One Initial Photoshop ideas of using the three graces from the Primavera with an overlay of Da Vinci’s hand sketch.
The initial font I was going to use looked to heavy so I took inspiration from the info panels on the ‘ We interrupt the Programme’ posters and combined two fonts to use for my fist poster idea . I think this looks more effective and by adding more falling roses and brightening them the whole composition works better.
POSTER DESIGN 1 For my first poster design I used the imagery of the three graces and played around with filters and the overlay of Da Vinci's hand drawings. I have used the improved font idea and I think it works well with the monochrome colour scheme. I like how this has turned out with my own idea of the falling roses as it works well against the font of the colour of the three graces Bold ‘eroded’ font covering the figures faces- gives a modern look to classical imagery
Overlay of falling flowers taken from Botticelli’s ‘Birth Of Venus’ using Photoshop
Similar eroded block text , important words/info and date in bold
Overlay of Da Vinci’s hand sketches , this didn’t work well as it was too faint and couldn’t be seen behind the text
For my second poster design I have simplified the font of the title and information and used simple imagery from the birth of Venus. On top of this I have used an overlay of my own photography of gestures. I think colour wise the overlay and background worked well but I didn’t like the simple font
POSTER DESIGN 2 I like how this works but I still prefer the font design of the 1st poster and the use of the three graces. I have decided to use with the first poster design but use the overlay elements I used here to create my final poster design
Botticelli’s Birth Of Venus
Simple font idea for title and information, didn’t work well with the background and didn’t compliment the overall look of the poster
Social media
POSTER DESIGN 3 (Final design)
For my final poster design which I will use for my exhibition , I have used the same formal elements of my first poster as it was successful but lightened the background and replaced the Da Vinci hands with my own photography . I think this works well with the bold font and incorporates my own ideas.
Exhibition guide booklet
For my ticket design I have used the same imagery and font from my poster design as I think all of my advertising should have the same scheme. Along with these I have created an exhibition guide booklet which accompanies the exhibition . From looking at ways exhibitions are advertised I have looked at posters that have QR codes which take you to information websites. The example below was created by The Natural History Museum in Vienna advertising a special exhibition, The Venus of Willendorf with a poster emblazoned with a QR Code. I have decided to produce an additional poster with a QR code to take the viewer to my exhibition guide.
