Frances Knight Open Studio Exhibition 17th to 26th August 2019 at Venue 1, Top Floor Studio, The Victoria Institute, 10 Tarrant Street, Arundel BN18 9DG Open 12-5.30pm on weekends and Bank Holiday Monday and 2-5.30pm on weekdays
Into the Light Contemporary landscape artist Frances Knight will open her studio for a summer exhibition of landscapes and seascapes as part of the Arundel Gallery Trail from 17th to 26th August. 'Into the Light' Exhibition explores the effects of light, colour and structure in the landscape, and visitors will be able to view her latest paintings and chat to Frances about her work and process. Inspired by light, Frances paints mainly on location directly from nature; working on larger more abstract paintings from these studies once back in the studio. Often going out to paint very early in the morning, her work explores the effects of light, colour and structure on the landscape. The immediacy of plein air painting allows her to capture the changing light more authentically and so convey a true experience through her art. "I am less concerned in rendering surface details of the landscape but more in exploring effects of colour, light and structure; the dynamic of the junction point between the physical tactile quality of the abstract painted surface, and an impression of space and atmosphere."

"Painting for me is as necessary as eating and breathing. When I do not paint I feel out of balance. I deeply need to paint and to express the beauty that I experience around me in nature, both on the surface and at depth. I think art and beauty can contribute to the quality of life, and help people identify with deeper levels of meaning in their lives." Frances Knight

Frances Knight Frances Knight is a contemporary landscape artist. She likes to paint outside directly from nature exploring the effects of light, colour and structure on the landscape and then works on larger paintings from these studies once back in the studio. Interested in the interplay between abstraction and representation, she seeks to express an inner dialogue between subjective experience and objective reality. Frances enjoys painting the local Sussex and Hampshire landscapes, but also travels widely and paints in many different countries. She visits Provence and the Netherlands often, and has also painted in Alsace, Mallorca, Tuscany, India and the USA. After graduating from Camberwell School of Art, Frances won a Commonwealth and British Council Scholarship to complete her Master of Fine Arts in India. Frances worked as a professional painter for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles' guru, and the Transcendental Meditation organisation, a non-profit charity dedicated to creating world peace, for more than 30 years. Frances has exhibited her work internationally as well as widely across the UK, and her paintings are in private collections in the UK, Europe, the USA, Canada and India.
"I work mainly outside on location, and I find I love the light early in the morning or early in the evening. It is particularly peaceful, particularly beautiful. I set up my easel somewhere and just paint. It is about capturing that feeling and then trying to convey it to somebody else. It’s having them see the painting and hoping that it will resonate with them. It is wonderful to see someone enjoy your work." Frances Knight
