Frances Knight 15th to 30th June 2019 at The Little Art Gallery, Rookwood Road, West Wittering PO20 8LT Meet the Artist on Sunday 16th June Opening hours Thursday to Sunday, 10am-5pm
Between Shore and Sky Contemporary artist Frances Knight will present a solo exhibition of local seascapes at the Little Art Gallery in June as part of the Festival of Chichester. Painting throughout the seasons and in all weather at different locations along the Sussex coast including Chichester Harbour, Frances' latest work captures the effects of light at different times of the day on the various states of the tide. 'Between Shore and Sky' opens on Saturday 15th June at the Little Art Gallery in West Wittering, and is available to see until Sunday 30th June. There will be a special 'Meet the Artist' session during the day on Sunday 16th June, where visitors will get the opportunity to chat with Frances about her paintings and get an insight into her art practice. Inspired by light, Frances paints mainly on location directly from nature; working on larger more abstract paintings from these studies once back in the studio. Often going out to paint very early in the morning, her work explores the effects of light, colour and structure on the landscape. The immediacy of plein air painting allows her to capture the changing light more authentically and so convey a true experience through her art.

Frances Knight Frances Knight is a contemporary landscape artist. She likes to paint outside directly from nature exploring the effects of light, colour and structure on the landscape and then works on larger paintings from these studies once back in the studio. Interested in the interplay between abstraction and representation, she seeks to express an inner dialogue between subjective experience and objective reality. Frances enjoys painting the local Sussex and Hampshire landscapes, but also travels widely and paints in many different countries. She visits Provence and the Netherlands often, and has also painted in Alsace, Mallorca, Tuscany, India and the USA. After graduating from Camberwell School of Art, Frances won a Commonwealth and British Council Scholarship to complete her Master of Fine Arts in India. Frances worked as a professional painter for Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the Beatles' guru, and the Transcendental Meditation organisation, a non-profit charity dedicated to creating world peace, for more than 30 years. Frances has exhibited her work internationally as well as widely across the UK, and her paintings are in private collections in the UK, Europe, the USA, Canada and India.
"Painting for me is as necessary as eating and breathing. When I do not paint I feel out of balance. I deeply need to paint and to express the beauty that I experience around me in nature, both on the surface and at depth. I think art and beauty can contribute to the quality of life, and help people identify with deeper levels of meaning in their lives." Frances Knight
