T E R R E N E H OT E L The Terrene hotel was originally a six stor y warehouse built in 1905 to accommodate residential condominiums. The current Terrene Hotel is a renovation and conversion of its former self, adding four stories to the existing building with an 8 feet cantilever along the building’s southern exposure. The building houses numerous hotel rooms , restaurants , and a basement bar . The Terrene hotel’s vision is to allow many customers to experience the drive and pressure seen in its theme, cracks in the earth’s surface . 1

Terrene Hotel entails:

The Terrene hotel, explains itself entirely and honestly through its name terrene originating from the word terra in Old Latin to the current expression terrene , meaning earth . Terrene desires to embody and create an experience not commonly seen in modern day life.

As a dyad, we researched and explored various elements of the ear th that would be used for the Terrene design. We settle on using variations of fissures seen on the ear th in var ying climates as our inspiration . We decided to use tessellations as a base from analyzing the fissures and used it as a foundation for our overall terrene design concept.

[PAPER] After establishing the basis of using tessellations, we wanted to create a contrast and sought two distinct fissures seen on the earth . We wanted to create two wallpaper designs that matches the vision of terrene and compliments it through the juxtaposition of the two extremes . 7

CR E VA S S E The most commonly seen and known f issure formation associated and created within extremely cold climates are crevasses. In both mountains and glaciers, crevasses are known to be the entrance to a deep dark abyss .

9

S T R AT U M

Extreme heat climates cause desiccation (commonly referred to as mud cracks) on the ear th’s surface. The intense temperature and lack of moisture in the air causes even the soil to evaporate moisture. This causes thin deep fissures that tessellates the ear th’s surface making the surface look brittle and appear as if it is peeling .

[PRINTER] When choosing a light fixture we wanted to design a custom table lamp that would interface with the customer and be aesthetically pleasing. We accomplished this with the Crackles table lamp by creating the fixture to have a myriad of opening sizes and proportions allowing light to emit through the openings to project “ cracks throughout the space. 11

A modern and elegant tessellated wall made through tiles were created with 3D printed resin , coated with white spray paint and finished with an LED backlight to illuminate the triangulated surfaces of each tile. The illumination showcases the cracks as they are revealed by the light and give the abstract illustration of a cracked surface on a wall. 17

Elements of the floor plans are separated by their relation to temperatures . Elements that relate to water like the bars, bathrooms, and water installations are drawn to the center of the building to express and reflect their attachment to being cool. In juxtaposition, the warm, dry elements like lounge seating and resting areas are located in the exterior of the internal floor plan.

two physical 3D models for prototype purposes. The smaller scale model is created using gray pearl resin , while the larger scale model was assembled by creating four smaller parts out of translucent resin to be joined together with the use of an adhesive. The large scale model was then finished with a gray spray paint. TERRENE • 36
