We are excited to feature two remarkable “Community Stars” this month. We interviewed Timur Ender from Portland, Oregon, who is running for the Portland City Council, and Zeyna Pruzhanovsky from Chandler, Arizona, who is running for the Chandler Unified School District Governing Board. Campaigning for political or civic office requires dedication, planning, and resilience. Although most of us may not be able to vote for them, we can support their campaigns through donations and by spreading the word.

RECORD NUMBER OF TURKS VISIT GREEK ISLANDS DURING EID HOLIDAY

Over 50,000 Turkish citizens visited 10 Greek islands during the Eid-al-Adha holiday, benefiting from the special on-arrival visa, according to Kıvanç Meriç, president of the Izmir BTK branch of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies.

The on-arrival visa, which allows Turks to visit for up to a week without a full Schengen visa, saw quotas filled days in advance. Daily, 1,500-2,500 Turks crossed to the islands, with 13,000 visiting Lesbos, 15,000 Samos, and 11,000 Chios.

The simplified visa process, requiring less paperwork, made travel easier and quicker compared to the Schengen visa. However, Meriç highlighted that the cost of the on-arrival visa (80-100 euros) is close to that of the Schengen visa (100-150 euros), which offers longer-term travel benefits.

Overall, the on-arrival visa significantly boosted tourism to the Greek islands, with many breaking all-time visitor records during the holiday season.

CHOBANI FOUNDER HAMDI ULUKAYA ACQUIRES AMERICA’S OLDEST CRAFT BREWERY

Chobani founder Hamdi Ulukaya is set to revitalize legacy beer brand Anchor Brewing Company.

The billionaire announced his acquisition of the San Francisco-based beer company through his family office, Shepherd Futures. This acquisition is personal and not related to Chobani.

This is Ulukaya’s second major acquisition. His first was in 2015, when he bought a stake in La Colombe for $60 million. In December 2023, Chobani took over La Colombe by buying Ulukaya’s personal stake.

A source from Shepherd Futures mentioned that Ulukaya values local brands with deep community ties, which motivated him to acquire Anchor Brewing Company. Anchor, the oldest craft brewery in the US, closed last June due to the pandemic, inflation, and competition, according to a spokesperson.

Ulukaya is excited to revive the brewery. “San Francisco is at the heart of Anchor Brewing, and Anchor embodies so much of what makes this city great,” he said in a press release. He expressed his enthusiasm for supporting the brewery’s legacy and the San Francisco community.

Anchor Brewing was previously acquired by Japanese company Sapporo Holdings Limited in 2017 but struggled to stay afloat. Sapporo ceased operations last July.

“What an exciting time for San Francisco and Anchor Brewing,” Ulukaya stated, highlighting his admiration for the city’s history and spirit.

TURKISH AIRLINES TO SIGN $20 BILLION DEAL WITH AIRBUS AND ROLLS-ROYCE FOR LOCAL PRODUCTION

Turkish Airlines (THY) is set to finalize a $20 billion agreement with Airbus and Rolls-Royce for the domestic production of aircraft components. This deal, part of THY’s extensive aircraft purchase announced last year, will be announced in Istanbul later this month.

The agreement involves producing parts for 220 aircraft ordered from Airbus, supporting Türkiye’s goal to enhance its aviation indus try. THY plans to nearly double its fleet to over 800 planes by 2033. Rolls-Royce will supply engines for 70 widebody aircraft in the order. Turkish companies, including TUSAŞ Engine Industries Inc. , are expected to participate in the manufacturing program.

This initiative aligns with Türkiye’s strategy to integrate domestic production into foreign purchases and strengthen its aviation capabilities, supported by significant infrastructure investments like the new Istanbul Airport.

Shares of Airbus and Rolls-Royce rose following the news, high lighting the market’s confidence in the deal.

TURKISH EMBASSY HOSTS TURKISH BUSINESS DELEGATES AT SELECTUSA INVESTMENT SUMMIT

The Turkish Embassy in Washington hosted businesspeople from Türkiye who were in the city to attend the SelectUSA Investment Summit, an event organized to promote investment opportunities in the US.

Ambassador Önal: “The SelectUSA Summit provides a valuable platform for Turkish entrepreneurs to network and gain a better understanding of doing business in the USA. We are pleased with the momentum in our bilateral relations. Türkiye’s dynamic private sector, strong manufacturing base, and geostrategic location complement the US economy and its vast consumer market. We encourage entrepreneurs on both sides to increase their interaction, fostering a shared vision for the prosperity of our nations.”

At the reception, speeches were also delivered by Diane Farrell, Deputy Under Secretary for International Trade at the US Department of Commerce; Jennifer Miel, Vice President of the US Chamber of Commerce; and Julie Eadeh, US Consul General in Istanbul.

SIMPLE YET ELEGANT

Sustainable beauty and health trends are gaining momentum, reflecting global shifts toward eco-friendly and wellness-focused lifestyles.

Sustainable beauty and health trends are gaining momentum, reflecting global shifts toward eco-friendly and wellness-focused lifestyles. In the US and Türkiye, consumers are becoming more conscious about their choices and demands.

There is a significant push toward using eco-friendly packaging in beauty products. This includes recyclable, biodegradable, or compostable materials, such as glass, paper, and certain types of plastic. Brands also opt for minimalist designs and refillable or reusable packaging to reduce waste.

One of the most innovative trends in the beauty industry is upcycling, where ingredients that would otherwise be discarded are transformed into new products. This unique approach, particularly strong in perfumes and skin care products, offers environmentally friendly alternatives and is a testament to the industry's creativity and commitment to sustainability.

Concentrated beauty products are on the rise. They require smaller quantities to be used, thus reducing packaging and waste. These products often come in smaller, more sustainable packaging designed to last longer, aligning with minimalist and sustainable consumption practices. Perfect for traveling!

There is a growing emphasis on products that promote overall well-being, including those with stress-relieving ingredients and

aromatherapy benefits. This trend ties into the broader movement toward holistic health and self-care. It is time to appreciate all the fresh herbs, herbal mixtures, and natural food.

With more beauty and health concerns, consumers increasingly demand transparency from beauty brands regarding their sourcing and manufacturing practices. Brands that demonstrate clear and ethical practices, including B Corp certifications, are gaining favor among eco-conscious consumers. This also became a hot topic for supply chain initiatives for the commercial industry, and many initiatives are being formed, such as the G7 Sustainable Supply Chains Initiative, SLoCT, The Sustainable Supply Chain Initiative (SSCI) by Consumer Goods, and so on.

These trends reflect a broader shift toward sustainability and conscious consumption in the beauty industry, driven by consumer demand for environmentally responsible and health-focused products. Working on some of the initiatives directly has been a very rewarding journey for me so far, and I hope to see a continuous and effective change in health and well-being with more sustainable approaches. ■

A TRUE SURVIVOR FROM HATAY: ALIYE'S JOURNEY OF HOPE AT THE CHILDREN'S WELLNESS CENTER

Aliye's journey from the rubble to recovery is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact of compassionate support.

Among the countless lives affected by last year’s twin earthquakes in Türkiye was an 18-year-old girl named Aliye. She became a symbol of hope when she was miraculously pulled from the rubble after two days, offering us a glimmer of light in the darkest moments. Buried under what was once her home, Aliye faced unimaginable fear and pain. Although she was eventually rescued, she tragically lost her leg in the catastrophe. Even more devastating, she lost her mother and brother, leaving her with her father, who is struggling with a heart condition.

Relocating to Adana with her father, they found a new home with her aunt. Despite his health issues, her father provided a pillar of strength and hope for Aliye. It was during this time of immense hardship that the

Children’s Wellness Center, Türkiye's first and only rehabilitation center and established with seed funding from Turkish Philanthropy Funds (TPF), came into their lives as a guiding light.

The Children’s Wellness Center was created to provide comprehensive care and support for children affected by last year’s earthquake. Its team of dedicated professionals and volunteers is ready to address young survivors' physical and emotional needs. Aliye’s story is one of the many that highlight the critical role this center plays in the community.

Aliye's Rehabilitation Journey

Upon arrival at the Children’s Wellness Center, Aliye was met with warmth and compassion. The medical team quickly assessed her condition and devised a rehabilitation plan tailored to her needs. One of the key aspects of her treatment was fitting her with a prosthetic leg. This process restored mobility and helped Aliye regain her sense of independence and confidence.

The prosthetic team worked tirelessly, ensuring Aliye’s new leg was comfortable and functional. They taught her how to walk again, step by step, providing both physical and emotional support. The center also offered psychological counseling to help Aliye and her father cope with the trauma and loss they had experienced.

Through weeks of intensive therapy and support, Aliye began to adjust to her new reality. The Children’s Wellness Center

became more than just a medical facility; it was a place where Aliye found hope and resilience. She made new friends, participated in various activities, and gradually started to smile again.

Her father, too, found solace in the center’s supportive environment. He participated in support groups with other parents who had lost loved ones. The center provided a holistic approach to recovery, addressing the needs of both Aliye and her father.

The Impact of TPF's Support

Establishing the Children’s Wellness Center with TPF's seed funding highlights the crucial role of such initiatives in disasterstricken areas. Now serving nearly 200 children, the center has evolved into a health, healing, and innovation hub. What began as the vision of a few Turkish-American doctors, supported by TPF's initial funding and the contributions of many, has grown into a vital institution. The Children’s Wellness Center at Çukurova University exemplifies the incredible outcomes possible when communities come together. The center provides immediate medical care and ensures long-term support for recovery and rehabilitation.

Aliye's journey from the rubble to recovery is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the profound impact of compassionate support. The Children’s Wellness Center was pivotal in transforming her life, providing the tools needed to overcome losing her leg..

As Aliye continues to grow and rebuild her life, she reminds us of the difference dedicated support and community effort can make in the lives of those affected by tragedy. With its mission to expand nationwide, the Children's Wellness Center aspires to be a sanctuary of healing for all children in need of special care in Türkiye. We take pride in our ongoing support for this transformative haven, aiming to extend its reach and impact.

Ongoing support for the Children’s Wellness Center ensures that many more children like Aliye can recover and lead fulfilling lives. ■

Exclusive Interview with EFE KABABULUT

BLENDING TRADITION AND MODERNITY: LAZZONI’S JOURNEY TO GLOBAL DESIGN EXCELLENCE

LAZZONI brings imagination to life, delivering furniture as unique as the individuals who inspire it.

Efe Kababulut, the Chief Marketing Officer of LAZZONI, shares his journey and insights into the company’s remarkable growth and commitment to design excellence. From its origins in Türkiye to its expansion into the United States, LAZZONI continues to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern aesthetics, creating unique, customizable furniture for a global market.

Can you tell us a little about yourself?

My passion for design started at a young age. I was born and raised in a family that produced furniture. I spent my childhood and part of my youth under the influence of my family’s passion for furniture production and design. Studying design in America changed a lot for me. I saw that the value LAZZONI deserved was to be recognized worldwide. With this vision, we opened our first store abroad in Manhattan, New York. I still believe that Türkiye can be a leading country in the field of design and that LAZZONI will contribute to this.

What is the history of LAZZONI in Türkiye and the US?

The foundations of LAZZONI were laid in the hands of Master Hasan, the serender master. The first generation of the family, who were engaged in woodworking, trained the next generation, Osman Usta, as a woodworker. Osman Usta, the son of Master Hasan, later moved to Ankara and laid the foundations of door and window joinery and furniture making in 1947. Bulut Collective Company was founded, and Türkiye’s first modular kitchen production was started. In fact, Bulut Mutfak succeeded in entering every third house in Ankara.

Inspired by mid-20th century modern Italian design, LAZZONI started a new era with top-quality materials sourced from Italy and Germany. All products are made with the philosophy of caring for the environment, a philosophy inherited from our ancestors. Collections were prepared with designers around the world, defining the lines of the LAZZONI brand. LAZZONI rapidly gained national recognition with the opening of stores across Türkiye from 2001 onward.

In 2002, our partnership with the Giuseppe Nicoletti family, which has a long history like LAZZONI and has been leather craftsmen for generations, encouraged us to take our brand, which was growing nationally, to an international dimension.

In 2006, Yaşar Kababulut, the third generation of the family, opened a 25,000 square meter modern production facility in Akyurt, Ankara. Today, this facility has an area of 55,000 square meters and provides all its electricity needs with solar energy. With the Chelsea store opening in New York in 2009, LAZZONI gained an international identity. Today, LAZZONI continues its operations with 34 stores in 11 countries on 4 continents. In 2014, with the opening of LAZZONI Hotel in Golden Horn, we carried our quality to the tourism sector.

How does your product line differ from your competitors?

Every product is produced by carefully selecting the highest quality materials, and we offer high quality to our customers. Additionally, what makes us stand out the most is that

we make completely customizable products. Our customers can visit our stores and work on the designs they have in mind with our interior designers. This collaborative process ensures every detail aligns with the individual’s vision, resulting in furniture that transcends the ordinary to become a true reflection of personal taste and lifestyle. LAZZONI brings imagination to life, delivering furniture as unique as the individuals who inspire it.

Are you offering franchise opportunities, or how can someone open a store with you?

We offer franchise opportunities. In the process, we first introduce our brand so that our franchise stores are in integrity with the brand. We give importance to our own values. We enable people who have the LAZZONI culture to open stores with their investments. We are currently receiving franchise applications both in the US and Europe.”

We know you are hiring. What qualities are you looking for in potential employees, and where should they apply?

We have a very young population and we trust young people and our universities that educate these young people. Our universities provide very high-quality education in the field of interior architecture, decoration, and design, and we develop collaborations with these distinguished universities. We meet with young people in their 3rd and 4th grades before they complete their education and offer them opportunities to work parttime, on weekends in our stores. This makes a great contribution to both them and us, so they have the chance to decide how they will shape their careers with the education they receive in our stores, and of course, we have the opportunity to get to know them closely while they are still students.

Our definition of talent is clear and unambiguous: in our business, the hand must be able to hold the pen strongly. We look at the techniques of using a pen; we use special pens in our stores. Although technology sometimes gets in the way of holding a pen, we are determined to carry this culture from generation to generation. Because the stronger our pen

is, the better we understand the expectation, focus, and connection, and then we take the most critical step to produce the best project.

As I said, the key to this business is to be able to produce strong projects, that is, to learn the product and all its features to the finest detail. Their curiosity to learn and their openness to self-development is of golden value for us. We have brought our four-generation business to these days with the culture of “ahilik.” The master-apprentice relationship is our culture, and we pair beginners with those who do this job the best and ensure that they learn the job from the master.

In our model, the characteristics of the potential candidate are being a good listener, knowing the right questioning techniques and understanding skills. We want to welcome with great excitement our guests who visit us every day in our 34 stores because they respect our brand, believe in us, and

trust us. We want to welcome every guest who enters our doors in a similar way, never discriminating. We continue our way with those who will understand and assimilate this culture very well, who will represent us in with this way, who have high social consciousness and who can adapt to corporate values, who will put human value before everything else and protect the dignity of our brand!

There is also the knowledge of foreign languages, of course. In our multi-location structure, it is the knowledge of English that puts candidates ahead. These skills are the key to open the doors of America and Europe. In our stores in America, 80% of our young friends are transferred from our own country. In the last two years, we have managed to send 30 people to our stores in America, the most competent talents who know our processes and products the best. We will continue these transfers, and this is how we will grow.

It is very easy to reach us. We carefully evaluate the CVs coming from our website, and our advertisement is always open on the career site.

Could you describe your typical customer in the US? What is their profile?

Of course, we appeal to a wide range of people, but if I need to give demographic information, because we are a luxury brand, people who love modern furniture between the ages of 25-55, who are generally white-collar workers, prefer LAZZONI primarily.

How do your prices compare to other furniture stores?

We position ourselves as affordable luxury in the furniture market. While our products embody luxury in terms of design, quality, and craftsmanship, we strive to maintain competitive pricing that makes luxury accessible.

We know your furniture comes from Türkiye. Do you think this is an advantage? Where is your factory located?

As I mentioned while explaining our history, our factory is located in Akyurt, Ankara. This 55,000 square meter facility provides its electricity with completely sustainable energy sources. All our products are produced in this factory. The LAZZONI facility operates upholstery, metalwork, wood panel manufacturing, artisanal carpentry, and UV lacquering all under one roof. All our top-quality fabrics are sourced locally. All our durable frames are manufactured in-house, with a lifetime warranty. We can even manufacture for the largest hotels in our facility. Our team of master craftsmen has dedicated years of work to carpentry. Our facility is home to the largest UV lacquering line in Eastern Europe.

Is online shopping available for customers?

We are a very strong company in digital, but we are a company that transfers our digital strength to physical, that is, to stores with omni-channel marketing. Because we are a service brand, we prefer to provide interior design services rather than selling uniform products over the internet.

125 Year Long Journey of LAZZONI

Are there any upcoming product launches or collaborations that customers should look forward to?

Our designers are constantly working on new designs and collections. We meticulously examine each material and product, putting them through rigorous tests. Quality is not a matter of luck; our research and development team works tirelessly to ensure the highest standards. Thanks to their efforts, we are excited to bring new products and collections to our customers as soon as possible.

How does LAZZONI handle customer service and after-sales support in the US?

We provide white-glove service with dedicated teams in the US for after-sales support. Our teams in the US and Türkiye are always

in contact, ensuring a seamless experience. Customer satisfaction is very high in both Türkiye and the US.

What would you like potential customers to know about LAZZONI and its offerings?

First and foremost, we want our customers to know that their experience with us will be highly personalized. We offer more than just a shopping experience; we provide a complete interior design service. When you visit our stores, you will be assisted by an interior designer who will help make your spaces unique, modern, and luxurious. We are committed to providing seamless end-toend service and stand behind every product we offer. We ensure that our customers feel the difference when they choose LAZZONI. ■

COMMUNITY STAR: TIMUR ENDER

For each edition, our award committee honors a “Community Star,” highlighting an individual dedicated to helping others, passionately advocating for Turkish culture, and achieving professional success. This month, we have chosen Timur Ender, from Portland, Oregon, who is running for the Portland City Council. Although many of us cannot vote due to geographic restrictions, we can still support his campaigns, which involve extensive media promotions and campaign events.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Timur Ender, a dynamic individual with a rich cultural background. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Timur’s early life was a blend of American and Turkish influences. His parents, both from Türkiye, instilled in him a deep appreciation for his heritage. Raised in Raleigh, North Carolina, Timur’s journey has been shaped by his family’s medical background and his own passion for public health and urban planning. Join us as we explore his inspiring story and career.

To begin with, could you tell us about your early beginnings, childhood, original birthplace, and parents and siblings?

I was born in Baltimore, Maryland. My dad arrived in the US at the age of 9, and my mom arrived in the US after undergrad; both grew up in Türkiye.

We lived briefly in Maryland and Texas, where my dad finished medical school and residency, before ultimately moving to Raleigh, North Carolina, where I spent most of my childhood. I have two younger brothers. We grew up speaking Turkish at home. During my childhood, we traveled to Türkiye quite a bit, so I have early memories of spending summers with friends and family in Izmir. It was always interesting balancing my life in the US with summers in Türkiye; I felt at home in both.

What factors influenced you most in your formative years? Early education?

One significant influence was watching my dad treat his patients at his medical clinic. He treated people for heart disease and other medical conditions. For me, this connected back to the city and the built environment—things like park access, public transit, and healthy food access. While I had no interest in my dad’s profession, seeing him treat his patients sparked my interest in public health policy.

As a family, we traveled quite a bit when I was young. Seeing other cities’ bus rapid transit, public parks, city planning, and bicycle infrastructure was fascinating to me, even as early as the age of 8. I would see these amazing urban innovations and wonder why we were not implementing them in the US. My passion for observing public spaces, traffic, and how people interact in cities grew from there.

Higher education? Where and what did you study?

I began college at 17, so I was not quite ready to go far from home but was excited to study abroad. I went to North Carolina State University in Raleigh, majoring in criminology. During college, I studied abroad at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and Bogazici University in Istanbul. Studying in Istanbul for six months in 2010 was the first time I had lived in Türkiye. It was magical. I loved the big city, the views, food, culture, chaos, and the opportunity to travel around Türkiye with friends and family.

In 2012, I started law school in San Diego. In 2013, I transferred to Lewis & Clark Law School in Portland, Oregon. A few short years later, I graduated and passed the Oregon state bar.

How did you choose your career path?

When I was an undergrad, I would ride my bike around Raleigh, North Carolina. I saw parts of the city that were underinvested, lacking sidewalks, tree canopy, and adequate street lighting. These were also areas where life expectancy was lower due to poor air quality, more traffic crashes, and exposure to gun violence. This felt unfair since these residents lived in the same city and paid taxes. These outcomes seemed like a failure of city policy, which led to my interest in local government, public administration, and urban planning.

Please tell us about your current family. My wife and I met in law school in Portland and got married soon after graduating. We have two kids aged 4 and 6. A few months ago, we welcomed a new child into our family. We are fostering him until the State of Oregon finds a permanent home with adoptive parents. He is 2.5 years old. It is our first time fostering, and it has generally been a fun experience for all involved. Our kids have welcomed this new child with open arms and love having an additional playmate. Managing childcare, summer camps, and groceries for three kids is a lot of work, but we are lucky to have additional support from grandparents. When it was just two kids, I would make dinner for the family. Now, it feels like running a commercial kitchen!

Please tell us about your present campaign, its activities, and what it takes to compete in politics.

Running for public office involves four main things: fundraising, endorsements, communications, and fieldwork. Fundraising involves leaning on friends and family to solicit donations for your campaign to pay for communications. Communications can involve hiring a consultant to develop a messaging framework, talking points, and taglines. It can also include billboards, mailers, and digital advertising. Experts say the average voter needs to see your name seven times over the course of the election (name recognition) and know your values and what you stand for. The money you spend on communication helps get your name out. Fieldwork involves door-to-door canvassing

so you and your volunteers can directly contact voters. Endorsements involve filling out questionnaires and interviews with the hope of securing endorsements from organizations. If they endorse you, it may come with financial resources, field support, and digital advertising on your behalf. An endorsement signifies that the organization feels their values align with yours and believes your actions in office will reflect their goals.

What are the functions and the structure of the Portland City Council? What areas does it cover?

The City of Portland has a brand new form of government starting in January 2025. This change, approved by voters in 2022, involves four main changes:

● Instead of electing five people citywide, residents will now elect representatives for their specific geographic area. There are four geographic areas.

● Each geographic area will have three representatives, better reflecting the diversity of viewpoints in a district. All three council seats for East Portland are open, meaning there are no incumbents.

● Ranked choice voting: residents can rank their top six candidates. The top three vote-getters in each district will be elected.

● Professional city manager: Portland will have a professional city manager overseeing dayto-day administration. Previously, elected officials oversaw city bureaus, leading to a siloed approach.

I am running for one of three open seats to represent the East Portland district, the most diverse council district in Portland with over 100 languages represented. I am excited to build an inclusive city government where residents have access to the resources they need to thrive. I am the first Turkish-American candidate for any political office in Oregon.

The Portland City Council makes decisions about zoning, police, fire, urban planning, transportation, water, sewer, and parks. Specific issues may be elevated to the city council, such as whether repaving an arterial should include a new bike lane or which policy approach to use for addressing homelessness. The council also allocates the budget for city bureaus, addresses housing affordability through zoning and land use tools, and decides on employee benefits and state law changes.

Could you tell us about your experiences during this campaign, the challenges, and the memorable moments?

One way we have built momentum in our campaign is through house parties. Friends invite their networks, allowing me to hear from people about issues important to them, share my values and priorities, and raise money for the campaign. These house parties are memorable because they often involve food, friends, and new locations, which become imprinted in my mental map of the city.

The most challenging aspect has been missing time with my kids and family. Running for office means attending events, which takes time

away from family. I mitigate this by sometimes bringing my oldest child to events or planning intentional family vacations. My mother-in-law has been extremely helpful with childcare and picking up kids from school, allowing me to focus on the campaign. My mom also plans to visit Portland for the last two months of the campaign, providing additional support.

What hobbies and activities do you enjoy in your free time?

I love playing and coaching soccer. This year, I had the privilege of coaching my oldest daughter’s soccer team, and it was an incredibly rewarding experience. The Pacific Northwest is filled with amazing hiking trails and parks, both in urban areas and beyond. Exploring these natural treasures is always exciting, and I have found that even a lifetime would not be enough to discover them all because there are just so many.

How can we support you as a TurkishAmerican community?

The most effective way to support our campaign is by donating at Ender4EastPortland.com. This helps us reach more voters, maintain billboards, send campaign mail, buy digital ads, and ensure our canvassing volunteers have hats when knocking on doors.

What issues have you been working on in the city?

I entered Portland’s city government in 2015, working on transportation-related issues. I helped

launch our bike share system, fix speed safety cameras, and pass a 10-cent local gas tax funding street maintenance and safety. In 2017, I took on a project management role, delivering projects funded by the gas tax, including millions of dollars in safe routes to school projects, curb ramps, street paving, traffic signals, and street trees. I managed over $30 million of voter-approved infrastructure funding, primarily in the district I now seek to represent. These projects have helped kids and seniors more easily access schools, community centers, libraries, and public transit facilities in East Portland.

Is there something that the readers of TurkNetwork magazine might be surprised to learn about you?

In 2014, I had the opportunity to do a bike ride across Türkiye along the Black Sea. The ride was called “Hopa to Hope,” and we raised money for underprivileged youth. It started in Hopa near the Georgia border and ended in Istanbul. There were about ten riders, with guest riders joining us for portions of the ride. We had a police escort across the entire country, which was wild. Because I had spent most of my childhood summers in Izmir, it was fascinating to see the Black Sea region for the first time. We stayed in teacher houses (öğretmenevi) and hotels run by students studying tourism.

What are your recommendations to the Turkish-American? Would you like to share any message with our readers?

Get involved in local government! Sometimes, culturally, it can feel as if these spaces are not inviting or meant for us, but these are where decisions about our community are made. Local government decisions often impact people the most: parks, shade, trails, housing, streets, sidewalks, street lighting, trash, police, and fire services. Getting involved might start with advocacy, as it did for me, but it can also mean supporting local candidates, applying for a city job, or volunteering for local events . ■

COMMUNITY STAR: ZEYNA PRUZHANOVSKY

For each edition, our award committee honors a “Community Star,” highlighting an individual dedicated to helping others, passionately advocating for Turkish culture, and achieving professional success. This month, we have chosen Zeyna Pruzhanovsky from Chandler, Arizona, who is running for the Chandler Unified School District Governing Board. Campaigning for a political or civic office is a demanding job. Dealing with rivals requires time and resources, a cool head for good planning, and a calm attitude. In short, it is a difficult job. Since most of us are not from their regions, we cannot vote but can help fund their campaigns, which involve many media promotions and campaign events.

Zenya Pruzhanovsky is a candidate for Chandler, Arizona, Unified School District Governing Board, and campaigning for the election on November 5. We admire your initiative and courage. Campaigning for any position in an important body requires a lot of stamina, resources, time, and strong nerves.

To begin with, could you tell us about your early beginnings, childhood, original birthplace, and parents and siblings?

I am very grateful that TurkNetwork reached out to me for an interview. I was happy to hear from Oya. We both shared stories in our conversation. I was born Zeynep Kudret Ozkan in Alexandria, Virginia, to Suzanne Francis (Figgins) Ozkan and Lutfi Ozkan. My mother was born in Alexandria, and her

family is from Front Royal, Virginia, with deep roots in America. My father was born in Tarsus, Türkiye, and my grandparents moved to Adana. They were cotton farmers many generations before. My sister and I are the only two children from our parents’ marriage.

What factors influenced you most in your formative years? Early education?

I entered school when I was seven years old. I grew up in the heart of Chicago in the Pilsen neighborhood with my mother and stepfather, Constantino Novales. I also lived with my father in Fountain Valley, California.

Higher education? Where and what did you study?

I earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a minor in political science in 2002. Wanting to pursue higher education further, I earned my master’s in education from Arizona State University in 2014. Now, I am seeking elected office on the governing board of the #1 school district in the state of Arizona.

How did you choose your career path?

My career path is centered around education. I grew up in my father’s retail business with the example of a strong work ethic, just as my father

■ Her grandfather, Suleiman Ozkan, with her sister, Rabia.

had learned from his father. After completing my business degree, I managed research grants at the University of Kansas Medical Center. I have been an educator for over ten years, teaching kindergarten and first grade in the Gila River Indian Community. Being a candidate for the secondlargest school district in Arizona requires leadership, commitment, and perseverance.

Please tell us about your current family. My husband, Val, and I have been married for 25 years. We have four wonderful children: his daughter Masha, 36; my daughter Elif, 33; and our children, Alev Sofia, 19, and Adam, 17. We are very fortunate to have four grandchildren. I am thankful that my husband has always supported my educational goals and career, and now, as I seek elected office.

Please tell us about your present campaign, its activities, and what it takes to compete in politics.

I am campaigning as a candidate for the Chandler Unified School District (CUSD) Governing Board in Arizona. This non-partisan race is usually not contested. It is a volunteer and unpaid position held by dedicated community members. This is my first time running a campaign for elected office, which requires much commitment. My task is to educate the voters that I want to preserve and enhance the educational vision of our schools. Our board needs strong leadership to guide the district through changes in enrollment and continue to

enhance the vision for the workforce and higher education. As a current classroom teacher with a strong business background, I have a diversified skill set, including banking and real estate. The school budget is nearly $500M. I attend many events. Having my family’s support has been crucial for my busy schedule; otherwise, campaigning would be unsustainable.

What are the functions of the Unified School District Governing Board? What areas does it cover?

School boards oversee the administrative functions of the district, including teacher retention, budgets, and curriculum, ensuring that resources are responsibly allocated for high standards in academic performance to be met. If elected, I would be the only current teacher on the board.

Could you tell us about your experiences during this campaign and the challenges and memorable ones?

The most memorable experience so far has been attending the ATAA 2024 Conference in Michigan. Meeting many people has been very memorable. The challenge in this campaign is making it across the finish line on November 5, 2024.

How can we support you as a TurkishAmerican community?

The Turkish-American community can support me by following me on Facebook and Instagram. I would greatly appreciate your contributions. As a teacher, I need to reach out more to raise funds. There is a restriction on school board candidates from discussing the campaign on

school property. Please consider helping by contributing at zeynaforchandler.com.

What issues have you been working on in the area of education?

I want to expand the legacy of CUSD by building relationships with city council members, board members, the chamber of commerce, and administration to share my vision for the district. We need a competitive and educated workforce ready to meet future challenges. We need to retain dedicated teachers.

What hobbies and activities do you enjoy in your free time?

I love to cook and often combine this with my campaign by preparing baklava for my events, sharing my culture through this delicious treat. I also enjoy photography and taking photos of candidates as they speak. These hobbies allow me to blend my interests in education, cooking, and photography into my campaign.

Could you describe your daily routine for us?

I am a full-time educator. When the day is over, I drive back to my community to canvass and introduce myself as a candidate for the school board. I also attend community events.

What is your favorite quote?

“Optimism is the faith that leads to achievement; nothing can be done without hope,” - Helen Keller.

What is your proudest moment in your life?

The proudest moment of my life was watching our son, Adam, graduate from high school in May. At that moment, we held so many memories of raising our children.

Who has been the most influential person in your life and why?

My mother has been the most influential person in my life. I learned compassion, empathy, and patience from her. My mother was cared for by our family for over 15 years until her passing in July 2013.

Is there something that the readers of TurkNetwork magazine might be surprised to learn about you?

My dear Hala, Neriman Ince, who is the wife of a Turkish diplomat gave me my middle name, Kudret, which was her first name.

What are your recommendations to the Turkish-American Community?

They should work to build a community

atmosphere where they live. Volunteer in civic groups, education, and community organizations. Our community member, Ajlan Kurdoglu, is running for council member of the City of Chandler and represents a good example.

Would you like to share any message with our readers?

Our community needs Turkish American representation in business, culture, education, and government. I hope my candidacy for elected office inspires Turkish-Americans to achieve similar representation in such organizations. ■

AN EXTRAORDINARY DEVELOPMENT STORY: SINGAPORE MADE IT HAPPEN IN 50 YEARS

During my visit to Singapore, I was amazed by its transformation from a low-income economy to an economic hub with a gross national income of $80,000 per capita. In 2024, Singapore ranked fourth globally by gross domestic product per capita.

During my recent visit to Singapore, I was astonished to witness how the city-state transformed itself from a low-income economy into an economic hub with a gross national income of around $80,000 per capita (Chart-1). In 2024, Singapore was ranked fourth among the wealthiest countries in the world by GDP per capita, following Luxembourg, Ireland, and Norway. Singapore has come a long way since its independence on 9 August 1965. In the decades after independence, it rapidly developed from a low-income country to an open and pro-business economy globally. The 2023 Expat Insider Survey ranks Singapore at 6th place in quality of life. Singapore ranks one of the highest on the World Bank Human Capital Index and is among the world's most competitive economies.

This extraordinary economic development story happened in 50 years and could be a role model for other low- and middle-income countries. After gaining independence, Singapore’s future was uncertain. It struggled with unemployment, housing, education, and the lack of natural resources and land. In the 1960s, these problems led to social tensions. The government then made two critical decisions to address these issues. The first policy reform was phasing in export-led industrialization and phasing out import-substitution. The second policy reform prioritized foreign direct investment

inflows—to make this happen, regulations were put in place to attract global corporations to speed up industrial growth. The government developed industrial land and infrastructure facilities. The education system and labor laws were also improved to develop technical skills relevant to industrialization, which addressed the labor supply side of issues.

To stimulate economic growth, the manufacturing sector became the economy's engine, which contributed to rapid industrialization in the 1960s. The Economic Development Board

was set up in 1961 to formulate and implement national economic strategies. The focus was on attracting foreign direct investment through tax incentives. Industrialization led to the production of higher value-added products, which accelerated economic growth. The service industry grew fast, and unemployment declined thanks to increased trade volume at the port. Singapore's strategic location as a natural hub for international trade was instrumental in its economic development success.

It was quite impressive that the government’s

ECONOMY

economic policies worked, and the manufacturing sector’s contribution to GDP increased from 14 percent in 1965 to 22 percent in 1975. Singapore had established an industrial base in only a decade. During the same period, Shell and Esso established oil refineries in the country. These developments marked Singapore’s fast transformation toward capital-intensive value chains. By the early 1980s, Singapore became the leading producer of petrochemicals and electronics. Furthermore, the tourism sector’s contribution to GDP was strengthened with the opening of Universal Studios and Marina Bay in 2010.

Today, Singapore is seen as a free-market success story. Low taxes and a lack of non-tariff barriers make it attractive to private capital. Foreign direct investments were the main factors that helped Singapore transform into a high-income economy. Chart 2 presents the past five decades' net foreign direct investment inflows. The financial sector also grew fast. Singapore is hosting more than 130 banks as a regional hub for wealth management. Home to the world's busiest cargo seaport, the country's main export products include electronics, manufacturing, machinery, and chemicals. The services sector is also strong, contributing to 70 percent of GDP. In 2021, the “Singapore Green Plan” was launched to strengthen green growth. To make this development success sustainable,

the government invests in human capital and skills development with a budget allocation of almost one billion dollars annually. According to Transparency International, Singapore is one of the least corrupt countries in the world, although it has a pro-business economy.

One issue to watch in the years ahead would be inequality. In 2023, Singapore's Gini coefficient was calculated as 0.433. After adjusting for government transfers and taxes, the index was 0.371. This shows that government transfers have a positive impact on household income, but this is an area that requires constant monitoring. There is a risk that the income gap widens between low-skilled and high-skilled workers. Nonetheless, I was happy to hear that the government made income inequality one of the national priority areas ■

With stringent safety standards and a patient-centered approach, Türkiye continues to attract millions of health tourists seeking exceptional medical treatment and a holistic healthcare experience.

Exclusive Interview with DR GIATH ALSHKAKI OSMAN

A JOURNEY OF DEDICATION AND EXCELLENCE

“Inspired by my surgeon uncle, I decided early on to pursue a career in surgery, driven by a passion to understand and manipulate the complexities of the human body.”

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the remarkable journey of Dr Giyas Alshkaki Osman, a distinguished surgeon whose career spans multiple continents and cultures. From his early years in Iraq to his pioneering work in the United States and Türkiye, Dr Osman’s story is about dedication, perseverance, and a profound commitment to medicine.

We would love to learn about your early years. Could you tell us about where you were born and raised? Do you have any siblings?

I was born on July 7, 1960, in Baghdad, Iraq, and spent my formative years in the vibrant city of Kirkuk. My Turkmen name, Giyas, was translated to Giath in English, reflecting my cultural heritage. My father, Abdul Jabbar, practiced law. At the same time, my mother, Ayhan, dedicated herself to education as the local elementary school principal, where many of my friends and I completed our early education. I progressed through elementary, middle, and high school in Kirkuk, shaped by its diverse community and rich history. I have

one brother named Shaker, who resides in Kirkuk and works as an electrical engineer. I am married to Dr. Sena Osman, and together we are proud parents of three children, Murat, Omer, and Manolya, who have followed in our footsteps to become doctors, continuing our family’s commitment to medicine and education.

What inspired your move to the US?

Could you describe how your American journey unfolded?

Growing up in Kirkuk, Iraq, I was influenced by my family’s medical background, particularly my uncle, a renowned surgeon. Inspired by him, I decided early on to pursue a career in surgery. After excelling in high school, I enrolled at Mosul Medical School, graduating with honors in 1984. Due to the war in Iraq, I could not pursue surgical training abroad immediately, so I specialized in general surgery and traumatology at the Medical City Center in Baghdad.

In 1994, seeking broader opportunities, I moved to Qatar, where I continued my surgical education and passed exams to become a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in 1998. While in Qatar, I aimed to

relocate to England, but fate intervened when I met Dr Richard Crass, a prominent pancreatic surgeon. His influence led me to visit the United States in 1999, where I observed at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland.

Impressed by the American medical system, I resolved to establish myself there. However, achieving that goal required retaking medical exams and completing a full surgical residency and fellowship at OHSU Portland. Through this journey spanning Middle Eastern, British, Irish, and American medical systems, I have come to appreciate the sophistication and effectiveness of the American approach, despite its challenges and costs.

Could you share your path to becoming a doctor and what inspired you to become a surgeon?

From a young age, I was deeply influenced by the presence of doctors in my family, particularly my surgeon uncle, whose work captivated me. The intricate workings of the human body fascinated me, and the ability to perform surgery to heal and cure seemed almost magical. This fascination led me to pursue a career in medicine, driven by a

passion to understand and manipulate the human body's complexities. As I advanced in my medical education, I was particularly drawn to the advancements in minimally invasive surgery in the United States. These innovations inspired me to specialize further in minimally invasive general surgery, gastroenterology, and weight reduction surgery, seeing them as pivotal in enhancing patient outcomes and recovery times.

What has been the most challenging aspect of working in medicine, and how have you overcome it?

Apart from the immense responsibility inherent in the medical profession, the path to becoming a doctor is marked by rigorous dedication and a lengthy career trajectory. American medicine stands apart due to its dynamic nature and the constant need for doctors to stay abreast of advancements. Keeping up with evolving technologies and medical breakthroughs is crucial to delivering optimal patient care in the United States. However, alongside clinical demands, managing administrative complexities within healthcare has become increasingly intricate over time. This dual challenge underscores the demanding yet rewarding nature

of practicing medicine in the contemporary healthcare landscape.

Can you recount a particularly memorable experience in your career and explain what made it significant?

Every day in a surgeon’s life is filled with memorable experiences. One of the most striking moments for me was when I began practicing and learning about minimally invasive surgery. The integration of technology allowed surgeons to perform procedures with remarkable precision, often enabling patients to return home and recover within just one or two days—a stark contrast to the week-long hospital stays required in traditional open surgeries. This shift in approach accelerated recovery times and significantly enhanced patient outcomes, highlighting the transformative impact of technological advancements in modern surgical practice.

You have an office in Alexandria and perform surgeries in Türkiye. Could you talk about this?

I previously maintained multiple offices in Virginia, with my primary practice in Alexandria. Additional offices were situated in

Woodbridge, Loudoun, and Fairfax. However, due to severe traffic congestion issues in Virginia, I decided to consolidate my practice and retain only the main office in Alexandria. Internationally, I am fully licensed and certified to practice surgery in Türkiye. I hold privileges at Acibadem International Hospital in Istanbul, where I continue to serve patients and contribute to the medical community. This dual practice setup allows me to leverage my expertise both locally in the United States and abroad in Türkiye, ensuring comprehensive care for patients across different regions.

What do you think about medical tourism in Türkiye?

Türkiye has made significant strides in its medical system over the past 7-10 years, establishing itself as a hub for excellent healthcare services. The country’s strategic location and advancements in medical technology have contributed to its growing popularity among patients seeking medical consultations and treatments. Many individuals from neighboring regions and beyond choose Türkiye for its high-quality surgical and medical care facilitated by skilled surgeons and healthcare professionals. This trend underscores Türkiye’s evolving role in the global healthcare landscape, attracting patients who value quality treatment and strategic accessibility.

You have achieved great success. What qualities do you believe are essential for success in the medical field?

The key to the success of any medical practice lies in staying at the forefront of advancements in my field, accumulating extensive experience, and maintaining honesty with patients. By continuously integrating new technologies and staying informed about the latest medical developments, I strive to deliver the highest quality of care to my patients. This commitment to excellence and transparency is foundational to the trust and recognition my practice has garnered within the community.

What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a doctor? Your sons and daughter are physicians, so you and your wife have certainly been role models.

My wife, Dr Sena, has achieved far more than I have in our careers. She has been the secret to our family’s success, providing unwavering support to me and our children. Originally an obstetrician and gynecologist in Istanbul, Türkiye, she made the courageous decision to pause her career and join me in the United States. During those early years, while I was immersed in a demanding residency program with 140-hour workweeks, she selflessly took on the responsibility of caring for our children and managing our home.

Despite the challenges, she embarked on an extraordinary journey of her own. Driven by her passion for medicine, she redirected her career path to nuclear medicine upon arriving in the United States. She pursued advanced education at Johns Hopkins University, graduating with distinction. Additionally, she earned a fellowship in PET scan and theragnostic technology from the Cleveland Clinic, further enhancing her expertise and professional credentials.

I attribute much of my success to her steadfast support and her determination to excel in her career. Her resilience and commitment inspire me and our entire family, underscoring her profound impact on our lives and careers. Medicine is an arduous path, demanding

dedication and perseverance. It is essential to approach it not merely as a profession but as a heartfelt calling. Those aspiring to become surgeons require keen observation, courage, endurance, and abundant patience. These qualities are indispensable in navigating the challenges and responsibilities of the medical profession.

What kind of patients do you typically see?

In my practice, I cover a broad spectrum of medical specialties. First, I specialize in general surgery, which encompasses essential procedures such as hernia repairs, gall bladder surgeries, and treatments for colon diseases. Due to their frequency and critical nature in surgical practice, these cases are commonly referred to as "bread and butter" cases.

In addition to general surgery, I have subspecialized in gastroenterology and endoscopy. This area of my practice involves diagnosing and treating conditions affecting the digestive system. I perform advanced endoscopic procedures to investigate and manage gastrointestinal tract disorders.

One of the focal points of my practice is weight management. I offer comprehensive solutions that include medical interventions, surgical procedures, and endoscopic techniques (such as gastroscopy) for weight reduction. This holistic approach allows me to tailor treatment plans to meet the unique

needs and goals of each patient, ensuring comprehensive care across the spectrum of surgical and gastroenterological services.

Looking back at your career, what are you most proud of?

My wife and I are incredibly grateful and proud of our family. Together, we have raised three children who are dedicated to serving our country and community here in the United States. Their commitment reflects not only our values but also their own dedication to making a positive impact through their chosen paths. We are thankful for their achievements and look forward to seeing them contribute further to society, embodying the principles of service and excellence that are core to our family.

Would you like to share anything else with our readers?

I want to leave them with a quote: “Success is not final; failure is not fatal: It is the courage to continue that counts.”

-Winston Churchill (1874-1965), former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Türkiye has become a global hotspot for medical tourism, particularly for hair transplantation. Thousands of individuals worldwide flock to Türkiye annually to restore their hair and confidence. Here are the key reasons why Türkiye should be your top choice for a hair transplant.

Affordable Excellence

One of the most compelling reasons to choose Türkiye for a hair transplant is the combination

of affordability and high-quality service. The cost of hair transplant procedures in Türkiye can be up to 70% lower than in the United States or Western Europe. Despite the lower costs, the quality of care and success rates are comparable, if not superior, to those found in other countries.

Turkish clinics offer state-of-the-art facilities, highly trained surgeons, and advanced technologies that ensure optimal results. Many clinics also provide comprehensive packages that include accommodation, transportation, and aftercare services, making the entire experience seamless and stress-free.

Expertise and Experience

Türkiye is home to some of the most experienced hair transplant surgeons in the world. These professionals have performed thousands of procedures, refining their skills to deliver outstanding results. The most popular method used in Turkish clinics is the follicular unit Extraction (FUE) technique, known for its natural-looking results and minimal scarring.

The high volume of patients and the extensive experience of Turkish surgeons mean they are adept at handling various hair types and conditions. This expertise ensures personalized treatment plans tailored to specific needs, maximizing the transplant’s success.

Cultural and Tourism Appeal

Beyond the medical benefits, Türkiye offers a rich cultural experience that can enhance your medical tourism journey. From the historic sites of Istanbul to the stunning beaches of Antalya, Türkiye is a country filled with history, beauty, and hospitality. Patients often combine their medical treatments with a vacation, taking advantage of the opportunity to explore and relax.

In conclusion, Türkiye stands out as a top destination for hair transplant procedures due to its affordable yet high-quality care, experienced surgeons, and cultural appeal. Choosing Türkiye for your hair transplant ensures excellent medical results and the chance to experience a rich and diverse country. ■

EAT LIKE A TURK

RED PEPPER, THE LATE COMER

In Turkish cuisine, red pepper quickly became a staple after salt and black pepper. It is essential in Eastern and Southeastern Turkish dishes like kebabs and lahmacun, adding a complex taste in flake or ground form.

Chili pepper was first mentioned in its homeland in South America. In an inscription, it was called "beiberaxql".

Due to the mistake of reading Aztec hieroglyphs, it was known as "pepper" all over the world and as biber in Türkiye.

THE LONG VOYAGE

Possibly introduced to Spain after Columbus's voyages, the many varieties of pepper reached Southern Italy, France, and Calabria, making their way to Hungary, the Balkans, and Ottoman lands by the 18th century. While tomatoes were accepted slowly and with suspicion, peppers went ahead in popularity with other American-sourced products like beans and corn.

No matter how and when they were introduced to the Ottoman lands, this plant found its way into the cooking of the masses who could not afford the expensive Asian black pepper, especially after Napoleon’s Continental Blockade curtailed British trade from 1806 to 1813.

PEPPER BECOMES BIBER

In traditional Turkish cooking, red biber was introduced late, yet it quickly captured the third spot after salt and black pepper. Today, one can hardly think of Eastern and Southeastern Turkish cooking with their kebabs, lahmacun, meat, and bean dishes without the complex taste of hot and sweet peppers in flake or ground form.

How hot are the Turkish bibers? To answer this, we can use the Scoville Heat Unit (SHU), the method used by and named after Wilbur Scoville, the 20th-century pharmacologist. This means when the hotness of a pepper loses its spiciness after 2500 dilutions, it is given a rating of 2500 SHU on this scale.

Named after the major growing regions of Urfa, Antep, or Marash, the hotness of Turkish red bibers generally ranges from 2500-8000 SHU. The sweet summer biber is only 250 SHU while reaching a rich and powerful hotness for a variety preferred by connoisseurs that is grown in Samandağ. Antakya, at 40,000 SHU, is like Cayenne. In its finely ground dryness, it is called Ipek "silk" and feels just like that to the touch.

There is also a method of drying bibers only at night and keeping them under covers during the day. This is called isot biber, a dark product that is considered the pepper to be used for Çiğ köfte, the regional specialty of Urfa with or without meat.

It is also possible to find regional boutique varieties such as Çermik of Diyarbakır, stone milled Çukurören of Bilecik, freshly used and as stuffing for dolmas, the Cemele of Kırşehir and Cırgalan of Kayseri with its unique aroma in dried meat specialties of pastırma and sucuks.

THE BIBER PASTE

Red pepper paste is sometimes consumed in preparations with roasted sesame or walnuts, and it is a widely used ingredient in many

casserole-type dishes. Almost every house in southern Türkiye makes its paste in the summertime. Traditionally, women dry juicy, pointy red peppers called sivri biber and chilis under the hot summer sun. Once the peppers dehydrate, they become a flavor-packed condiment similar to Moroccan harissa, Korean gochujang sauce, and Middle Eastern zhoug sauce. While it is commercially available, it can easily be made if one is inclined to do it at home.

HOME-MADE TURKISH RED PEPPER PASTE (SALCA)

You can find Turkish red peppers and fresh long red chiles in most Middle Eastern or Latin markets, or store-bought red chiles in jars can be substituted.

◗ 4 red bell peppers

◗ 4 long red chiles

◗ 2 teaspoons lemon juice

◗ 2 cloves garlic

◗ 1 teaspoon kosher salt

◗ 1 teaspoon olive oil

Remove seeds from fresh chiles and whole bell peppers. Preheat the oven or grill to 450°F. Roast for 20 minutes on a baking sheet, turning over occasionally to char all sides. When the skin blisters and is charred black, transfer to a paper bag to sweat and cool down to remove the skin from the peppers.

Roughly chop the peppers and chiles, processing them quickly in a blender. Add the lemon juice, garlic, and salt. Purée until a smooth paste forms.

Place the mixture in a baking dish and "dehydrate" in the oven until it thickens to a rich paste consistency, baking for a minimum of 12 hours at the lowest setting, stirring often.

Transfer to a clean jar or container topped with a tablespoon of olive oil to preserve freshness. In the refrigerator it will be good for up to 7 days.

You are now ready to take it to another level called Muhammara, a spicy dip recently gaining popularity as a cold meze, the tapas-like dishes favored in bars, meyhanes and restaurants.

MUHAMMARA

◗ ½ cup chopped scallions (3 to 4 scallions)

◗ 1 teaspoon freshly squeezed lemon juice

◗ 1 teaspoon ground cumin

◗ 1 teaspoon kosher salt, more to taste

◗ 2 teaspoons pomegranate molasses

◗ ½ teaspoon red pepper flakes (preferably Marash or Aleppo), more to taste

◗ 4 tablespoons olive oil

◗ ¾ cup walnuts, lightly toasted (save 2 to decorate the top)

◗ Add to a food processor and purée until mostly smooth.

◗ 4 to 6 tablespoons fresh breadcrumbs and pulse to combine.

◗ Season to taste with salt and red pepper flakes.

Fill a bowl and make a well in the center.

Drizzle one tablespoon of olive oil, one teaspoon of pomegranate molasses, and ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes in the well. Crush and crumble the two reserved whole walnuts and sprinkle over the top.

No matter how you consume Turkish biber, with a unique metabolic quality, the capsaicin in it raises pain tolerance, and as an antioxidant, eating peppers is recommended to all. ■

TURKISH STUDENTS IN THE UNITED STATES

Student mobility has surged globally. While the US and Europe were once dominant destinations, students from Türkiye and elsewhere are increasingly choosing Australia, Asia, and the Far East. Despite these trends, US universities remain highly attractive.

Student mobility has increased worldwide. Until recently, the United States and Europe were almost the absolute destinations for students wishing to study abroad. However, there are some new "trends": the number of students going to Australia, Asia, and the Far East from all over the world is increasing. Although these new destinations are promising, US universities are still attractive to many.

Recently, I authored an article in Turkish for TEKA Journal concerning Turkish and other international students in the US. The article attracted a significant interest. To raise awareness about the statistics and trends of Turkish students in the US, we have prepared an English summary of that article for this issue of the TurkNetwork magazine.

American Dream, Really Ready?

Known as the "New World," the US is far from the "Old World." The distance between countries is not merely geographic but also manifests in differences in mindset, social and

cultural ecosystems, and daily life routines. Some of these codes differ significantly from those in Europe and Asia.

Students deciding to pursue education in the US face hurdles from the outset, such as detailed information and documentation requirements and some visa restrictions not commonly found in other countries. Students must focus and adapt not only on their future universities, academic programs, and advisors but also on different aspects of daily life.

Our article will not delve into the sociological aspects of this educational mobility. Still, it will briefly cover Turkish students' preferences, fields of study, universities with the highest enrollment, changes in trends over the years, and the economic contributions of Turkish students based on international student reports.

First Turkish Students in the US

International student reports prepared by the IIE and ECA are announced each year at a high-level event attended by the US Secretary of State (Open Doors Reports). These reports serve as a significant data source for those interested in researching the history of

students coming to America from different countries, including Türkiye, and the policies implemented in international education in the past.

Since the beginning of the last century, scholarship students from Türkiye have been coming to the US, such as 26 Turkish students recorded in 1921. These reports provided the names of the students and their high schools. Institutions like Turkish Sugar Refinery were sending their professionals for advancement studies, which is also stated in the 1945 reports (Duggan, 1929, 1945).

Turkish Students by the Numbers

According to the 2023 reports, Türkiye ranks 19th among the countries sending students to the US, with 8,657 students. Turkish students constitute 0.9% of the international student population in the US.

The highest number of Turkish students in the past twenty years was 12,397 in the 2009-2010 period. Generally, the number of Turkish students has remained in the tens of thousands. The total number before the COVID-19 pandemic in 2018-2019 was 10,159.

Most Turkish students in the US are currently in graduate programs (4,006; 46%), followed by those in associate and undergraduate programs (2,780; 32%), those in nondegree programs (242; 2.8%), and those in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) period (1,629; 15%).

Top Fields: Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Sciences

Regarding fields of study, 26% of Turkish students in the US are in engineering, 14% in mathematics and computer sciences, 14% in social sciences, 11% in business and management, 9% in life sciences, 6% in fine arts, 3% in education, and 1.3% in health sciences.

Compared to ten years ago (2011-2012), engineering was also the most common field of study for Turkish students coming to the US for education (25%).

Top States: New York, California, Massachusetts

According to Open Doors and NAFSA Reports, the highest number of international students

in the US is at New York University (24,496), followed by Northeastern University (20,637) and Columbia University (19,001), respectively. Among the top states, California ranks first (138,393), followed by New York (126,782) and Texas (80,757).

Like other students, Turkish students most frequently study in New York, followed by California, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Texas.

Economic Impact: $331 million/year!

The NAFSA reports reveal that international students contributed approximately $40.1 billion to the US economy and supported

368,333 jobs during the 2022-2023 period. International students enrolled in English language programs alone contributed $242 million to the US economy in the 2021-2022 academic year.

Those students contribute to the US economy not only by paying tuition fees but also through expenditures on groceries, housing, insurance, and transportation, etc. Considering all these factors, the reports state that "every three international students create one job in the US."

Another striking example from the same report indicates that in the 2022-2023 period,

8,657 Null

2021/22 8,467 169

2020/21 8,109 12 2019/20 9,481 160 2018/19 10,159 143 2017/18 10,520 78 2016/17 10,586 46 2015/16 10,691 705

there were 126,782 international students in New York, supporting 50,430 jobs and contributing $5.8 billion to the economy.

Guess what? Turkish students' contribution to the US economy is estimated to be $331 million only in the 2022-2023 term!

Bilateral Collaborations

Records of Turkish students sent to the US date back to the 1920s, as mentioned above. In addition to students who did not return to Türkiye, many others did. Among the notable figures in recent history are Adnan Kahveci, academician and politican; Prof Dr Tarık Galip Somer, former rector of Middle East Technical University and Ankara University; Prof Dr Mehmet Sağlam, former president of the Higher Education Council and former Minister of National Education—all of whom were among the students who studied in the US on government scholarships.

The Turkish diaspora remaining in the US and the students returning to Türkiye are highly valuable for bilateral cooperation and diplomatic studies between the two countries. There is significant potential for bilateral collaborations between US and Turkish higher education institutions. In our next article, we will discuss potential areas of collaboration in dual degree programs for both undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as in certified training programs for sharing professional experiences. For those who want to read more on Turkish Students in the US can refer to https://tekadergisi.com/index.php/pub/article/view/38/26 ■

THE ART OF LETTING GO

The "art of letting go" is the ability to relinquish control when control is no longer possible or meaningful. It is not about resilience; it is about being present in the moment and managing emotions effectively.

Imagine you need to talk with a loved one or a supervisor at work about a sensitive topic, which may or may not result in conflict. You think about all the possible ways this conversation can go wrong, what you could say, and how the other party might respond. You ruminate about past experiences relevant to this potential conversation. Worrying that the conversation will not end well, you keep delaying it. Meanwhile, important work gets postponed, and you build tension towards your loved ones by repressing your thoughts and feelings instead of expressing them.

This is one scenario where one gets “stuck” and cannot “let go” of past experiences or future worries, leading to a cycle of fear and inaction.

There is a very basic rule in human psychology regarding this tendency: a certain amount of stress may keep one alert about the dangers in a situation or increase focus and productivity. However, when this stress level surpasses a certain threshold, it can hinder productivity and effectiveness. Depending on the circumstances, it can turn one into a dysfunctional being in multiple areas of life.

In my work as a life coach and my social life, I have not encountered a single person who

has not, sooner or later, come close to that self-destructive point in their life. Everyone has different triggers, which can be relatively major or minor: heartbreaks, divorce, demanding children, internal conflicts, financial struggles, or the loss of a loved one.

In these instances, if we start resenting our past, it can lead us into depression. If we worry too much about our future, it becomes an invitation for anxiety, panic attacks, or even worse health conditions.

That is where the ability to control our emotions and thoughts becomes an essential part of our well-being. In other words, the art of letting go is truly a gift.

It is a gift that is not necessarily given at birth; it can be acquired over time, unlike many innate skills or talents we may have. This skill makes life much more livable and us much more functional. The value of this art increases with every passing year, like an endangered species.

According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, anxiety disorders affect up to 18.1% of the population, making them the most common mental illness in the US. Depression has a prevalence of 6.7%, making it the leading cause of disability for ages 15 to 44.3. While obsessive thoughts or past traumas are not the only factors for anxiety and depression, they are certainly among the strongest contributors to these statistics.

If this is such a basic skill for human beings, why is it an art and not an innate survival ability? Is it not the same as resilience, a recently popular concept? Not necessarily. The “art of letting go” is the ability to relinquish control when control is no longer possible or meaningful: not getting stuck in the past or obsessed about the future, allowing one to simply be “present” in the moment.

It is an art because there is an increasing variety of ways for people to understand, manage, and let go of their harmful emotions and thoughts. Everyone chooses their own path and tools that best fit their lifestyle, personality, issues, and circumstances.

Up until recently, this skill was commonly presented in therapy sessions with psychotherapy-based techniques such as cognitive behavior therapy for negative, self-defeating thoughts and psychoanalysis, which focuses on past traumas. Nowadays, more and more people resort to spirituality, meditation, mindbody approaches, or simply the “art of letting go” of their past traumas and future worries, gaining an understanding of limited control over events and better control of their emotions and their impact on them.

All these approaches have a similar purpose: to let go of our worries so we can enjoy life and act effectively. None of this is a quick fix because letting go is a process we improve with every experience we have over the years.

Here are six common pieces of advice to become better at the "art of letting go”:

01

Time to Heal: If you have a recent or past trauma, do not ignore the heavy emotions connected to this experience. If you got out of a bad breakup or divorce, allow yourself time to rest, cry, and pause your daily life, even if it means piling up weeks of laundry. Trying to act happy will put more pressure on your actions, only to release your grief or anger in an unhealthy way later on. It would be best if you channeled your initial emotions. If it is a far past trauma and still affecting you today, make sure you receive professional help. Give yourself the chance to feel the emotions and confront reality so you can get ready to let go.

02

Period of No Judgment, No Complaints: Practice the habit of nonjudgmental observation of your surroundings and the people around you. For example, spend a day on Instagram without comparing yourself to others or gossiping about people. Push the mute button on complaining about your life and judging others and yourself for a period of time. Feel the ease that comes with it.

03

You Are Not the Victim: Check with yourself: do you find yourself blaming your parents, spouse, or circumstances for the things that go wrong while you barely make any effort to improve things? Believing you are a victim is easier than working against your traumas or limitations. Many people blame their spouse for their failures in job, education, or other goals, only to end up repeating the same pattern of lack of effort after divorce. You are an adult with the power and capacity to improve your circumstances. Embrace your potential and let go of the past.

04

Be Conscious of Your Automatic Negative Thoughts: Many of us define our self-worth through achievements in one or two areas of life, which can be self-limiting. Automatic negative thoughts, such as "I am only worthy if I am a good mother/wife/husband or if I am thin/wealthy/liked by everyone,"

block us from moving forward and reduce our motivation. Another example is thinking about the worst outcome when challenged, like "I will fail that exam" or "I will not get that job." Letting go of these worries allows us to present our better selves.

05

Set Healthy Boundaries: If someone around you is interfering in your life with negative comments or actions, stop trying to change or control their behavior. This is a battle that will likely never end. I observe this in people getting divorced from narcissistic spouses: years of giving in, tolerating manipulation, and losing self-confidence. There is a fine line between investing in relationships and overinvesting yourself. This line is defined by the boundaries you set early on. You have the right to personal space, your own secrets, and control over who can access you. Healthy boundaries make relationships stronger.

06 Physically Let Go of Your Belongings: When struggling with ongoing negative feelings or thoughts, chances are there are physical items associated with these memories. Sometimes, it is a huge pile of clutter; other times, it is a dead flower. Renew your surroundings. This does not have to be expensive; it can be as simple as rearranging furniture or deep cleaning. Feel the relief with every item you get rid of that no longer serves a purpose.

By practicing these steps, you can improve your ability to let go of harmful emotions and thoughts, making your life more enjoyable and productive. ■

TURKISH PARTICIPATION AT THE CHICAGO EXPOSITION OF 1893

The Ottoman Empire aimed to improve its reputation at the Exposition with a vibrant Turkish village and various exhibits.

AAfter winning the bid to host the Chicago Exposition of 1893, months of searching to select the site, the death of the lead architect, and two years of constructing a White City, Chicago was ready to welcome the world. It was planned for the 400th anniversary of Columbus' discovery of America to display the strong emergence of the US economy and culture.

The site was a strip of land connecting Jackson Park to Washington Park near Lake Michigan, known as Midway Plaisance. This self-contained entertainment district helped offset the expenses of the Exposition by attracting more than twenty-seven million visitors in its five-month run.1

The President of the United States, Grover Cleveland, opened the exposition on May 1, 1893. Citizens of the various international villages came to greet the president. A Turkish band played an air of welcome. “The red fezzes of the Turks blossomed like poppies.”2

The official guests—limited to seventy— attended a state banquet, including Mavroyeni Bey, a diplomat representing the Ottoman Empire. After the “Banquet of Nations,” the president’s entourage started a whirlwind tour of the grounds and buildings, including Ibrahim Hakki Bey, Imperial Commissioner of the Sultan.

Turkish or Ottoman Presence

A special invitation of a visiting delegation of the United States gained the participation of the Ottoman Empire. Seeing an opportunity, the Ottoman Empire established a commission for the exposition to clear their "sick man"reputation in Europe.

■ R. J. Levi / This is an original 1894 halftone print portrait of R. J. Levi, a Jewish man from Constantinople.

In a section of the Committee on Awards report, the Ottoman Empire is referred to as "Türkiye" and "Ottoman" in the same sentence since American officials preferred to use the word "Türkiye" when referring to the Ottoman Empire as a government or nation state.

“The three ideologies that found a representation at the World’s Fair were Ottomanism, Islamism, and Turkism. First-hand accounts of the Ottoman Empire through these three ideologies reveal American and Western nations’ political and cultural power and influence over the Ottoman Empire, which was made possible through the external labeling of the Ottoman Empire as "Türkiye" and its

people as "Turkish," as well as through the representation of the Ottoman Empire as a "Muslim state." 3

The commissioner of the Ottoman Exposition was the Grand Vizier Hakkı Pasha, and his assistant Fahri Bey. Another Ottoman subject, Süleyman Bustani Efendi4 published a monthly newspaper in Turkish during the Exposition.

The Turkish Village

Opened by the Ottoman Consul in Chicago, Charles Henrotin4 the Turkish village, a typical exhibit of the Ottoman empire, spread over a spacious area and arranged in attractive

style by Robery J. Levy, its concessionaire, by profession a chef and caterer, who was the manager and chief proprietor of the Turkish Village and Theatre on the Midway Plaisance representing the firm of Saadullah, Suhami and company of Constantinople (now Istanbul).

"At one corner of the village stands the mosque, with its gilded dome 60 feet high and its slender minaret rising to an equal height. It was erected by special permission of the Ottoman government and dedicated with much pomp and ceremony, as well it might be for this was the first time that a Mohammedan temple had been consecrated outside

the limits of the Mohammedan world.” 5

The Ottoman Exposition Building was a copy of the Ahmet III Fountain, originally built by Sultan Ahmet III between 1728 and 1729 in front of the Topkapi Palace. The Philadelphia Municipality bought one of Osman Hamdi Bey's works for the Exposition to be exhibited in the Philadelphia Museum.

A 26-mph speed torpedo boat manufactured in the Golden Horn Dockyards was on display. The World Columbian Commission awarded the Naval Ministry prizes for scientific publications about sea and mathematics. The Feshane, one of the earliest industrial

organizations of İstanbul, had two rewards for its wool textiles and fezzes.

“Dark red fezzes: A very ornate and good workmanship collection. The award is because of the light red handwoven fezzes, which are water-dependable, firm-colored, soft, elastic, and made of good quality embroidery.”

Success was elusive for other undertakings. The Ottoman Hippodrome, organized by The Hamidiye Company for Syrian Maronite entrepreneurs, was officially supported by Abdulhamid II and the Sublime Porte. Although the Horse Show performed with

Arabian horses attracted significant attention, the company went bankrupt due to organizational errors and financial problems.

After five months, Americans did not get the commercial access they hoped to the Empire, and in return, the Ottomans' export hopes were minimal. Many Syrians who participated or visited ended up staying behind.

This was the era following the Egyptian Revolt of 1831-33. The industrial brilliance portrayed in the exhibits will slowly and suddenly collapse following the lifting of monopoly trade protections after treaties signed with Britain under military emergencies. France gained similar concessions by default. Ottomans should have pursued reciprocity.

The end was beginning. Turkish participation at the Chicago Exposition of 1893 was the last hurrah. ■

THE POWER OF COMMUNITY: HOW CONNECTING WITH LIKE-MINDED PEOPLE CAN ELEVATE YOUR BUSINESS SUCCESS

EXPERT ADVICE

Running your own business often feels lonely, but being part of a community of like-minded people provides the support and understanding needed to keep pushing forward.

Hey everyone, Oz Konar here from Business Lending Blueprint. Today, let us talk about something that is close to my heart why being part of a community of like-minded people is crucial for your business success. Starting and running a business can feel like a lonely journey, and the truth is, many people struggle to make it on their own. That is where the magic of community comes in. Let us dive into why finding your tribe can be a game-changer.

It Is a Lonely Road, But It Does not Have to Be Running your own business is no small feat. It often involves long hours and facing challenges that only other entrepreneurs can truly understand. That feeling of isolation can be tough, but you do not have to go it alone. Being part of a community of like-minded people can give you the support and understanding you need to keep pushing forward.

The Strength of Community Communities, especially those built around specific business interests or industries, provide more than just emotional support. They are a treasure trove of shared knowledge,

experiences, and networking opportunities. Here is why you should get involved:

1. Shared Wisdom: One of the biggest benefits of joining a community is the access to collective wisdom. You can learn from the successes and failures of others without having to make all the mistakes yourself. This can significantly accelerate your learning curve and help you make smarter decisions.

2. Networking Opportunities: Communities often host events, workshops, and meetups that can be crucial for networking. These connections can lead to partnerships, client leads, and opportunities that you might not have found on your own.

3. Motivation and Inspiration: Seeing what others in your community are achieving can be a great motivational boost. It pushes you to aim higher and gives you fresh ideas that you can adapt for your own business.

The Rise of Online Communities and Masterminds

Thanks to technology, finding and joining online communities and masterminds has never been easier. Whether it is through social media platforms, dedicated forums, or business networking sites, you can connect with peers from around the world. These platforms offer

the flexibility to engage on your own time and can be incredibly cost-effective.

Why I Invested Over $300K in My Education

I personally have invested more than $300,000 in my own education through courses, mentors, and live events. Why? Because learning from others who have been where you want to go is invaluable. It is far easier and less costly in the long run to learn from other people’s mistakes than to stumble through them yourself. This investment has paid off exponentially in avoiding pitfalls and leveraging opportunities that I might have missed.

How to Find and Join These Communities

Start by identifying the type of community that aligns with your business goals. Look for online forums, local meetups, or national business networks. Do not be afraid to invest in membership fees if the group offers substantial value. Consider masterminds or mentorship programs where you can get more personalized guidance and support.

Conclusion

In business, the journey can be just as important as the destination. By joining a community of like-minded individuals, you not only enhance your own chances of success but also contribute to the success of others. If you are ready to take your business to the next level, finding your community is a great place to start. Let us grow together and make the entrepreneurial journey a shared success. ■

KORKMAZ CAN SAĞLAM A RISING STAR

Korkmaz Can Sağlam, the Grand Prize winner of the 2022 Alexis Gregory Vendome Prize, believes in the healing power of music, seeing it as a universal language that brings us together.

Turkish pianist Korkmaz Can Sağlam is the Grand Prize winner of the 2022 Alexis Gregory Vendome Prize. The Vendome Prize is a piano competition described by Le Figaro as “the most prestigious in the world.” The purpose of the Vendome Prize is to seek out, reward, support, and guide future professional artists who are technically perfect, magnetic, original, ambitious, in possession of a large repertoire, and ready to undertake the challenges of a performing career. Throughout the years, the organizers have built an enviable reputation for discovering extraordinary talent and bringing it to the music world's attention. Many of the pianists who first triumphed at the Vendome have gone on to win major awards and now have resonant international careers.

Can Korkmaz was born in 1999 in Ankara and began his musical education with Gamze Kırtıl at the Bilkent University’s Music and Ballet Primary School at the age of seven. After studying with Antonio Pompa-Baldi and Sergei Babayan at the Cleveland Institute of Music, he received his bachelor’s degree from The

Juilliard School, where he was a recipient of the Ahmet Ertegün Memorial Scholarship and the Susan W. Rose Piano Fellowship twice.

In 2018, he was accepted as a scholar of “Young Musicians on World Stages” (YMWS), led by Güher-Süher Pekinel. During his studies, he has had the chance to work with musicians such as Jacques Rouvier, Pavel Gililov, Boris Berman, Ilya Itin, Michel Beroff, Jean-Francois Heisser, Gabriela Montero and Emanuel Ax.

Can Sağlam is currently pursuing graduate studies at the Cleveland Institute of Music under the direction of Maestro Babayan.

Can Sağlam comes from a family where music is a way of life. His mother and father are musicians; his father has been performing in Ankara with his band for many years. His mother also started with classical piano and later performed with keyboard. When Can Sağlam was 6 years old, they took him and his sister to a music course, and the teacher there discovered his talent. So the piano teacher suggested that little Can should take the conservatory entrance exam. His acceptance to the Bilkent University Music Preparatory Primary School was the beginning of a long journey.

Although he is still very young, he has performed in concert halls such as the Gilder Lehrman Hall in New York, Wiener Saal in Salzburg, Verbrugghen Hall in Sydney and in other venues in cities such as Paris, Nice, Brussels, Cleveland, Verona, and Istanbul. He has appeared in festivals such as the Gümüşlük Classical Music Festival, Antalya Piano festival and Bellapais Music Festival.

Korkmaz Can Sağlam, received great applause from the audience and very positive criticism from critics at the Sydney International Piano Competition in 2023 and won the Rex Hobcroft People's Choice Award. After wowing audiences in the 2023 competition, piano brought Korkmaz Can Sağlam back to Sydney where he made his Sydney solo debut in The Neilson—an ideal space to experience this 24-year-old’s utterly graceful, seemingly effortless command of the keyboard. In this recital, Bach was both an inspiration and a bridge into works by Chopin and Shostakovich.

Can Sağlam also gave concerts with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by James Judd and New Manhattan Sinfonietta conducted by Gürer Aykal. Some of his most recent concerts include a recital

at Ankara Erimtan Museum on June 1st, and a recital at the International Bellapais Music Festival on June 4th. Can Sağlam says that there are many things he wants to do in both the US and Türkiye. He wishes to start his own chamber music festival in Türkiye, and to bring his valuable musician friends and teachers whom he met in the US to Türkiye and organize workshops. He furthermore wishes to contribute to the music activities and education system in Türkiye. In the US he is starting the two-year Artist Diploma program in Dallas next year, and he aims to increase his competition and concert activities during this time.

Can Sağlam states that he sees music as a refuge. He strongly believes that music has the power to beautify our days and purify our thoughts during difficult moments in our lives. According to him, this power is the reason why music is a universal language and brings us together.

Can Sağlam published his first CD album “Solace” (https://www.sonoluminus.com/store/ solace) in 2024. In this album he plays pieces from George Friedrich Handel, Sergei Rachmaninoff, and İlayda Deniz Oğuz. As you can see, with this album Can Korkmaz not only

brings classical composers music to life but carries his young colleagues of him to the international arena. Namely, İlayda Deniz Oğuz is a pianist and composer, born in 2000 in Ankara who established her composition abilities at a relatively young age. She has been the youngest finalist ever in the history of F. Nejat Eczacıbaşı Composition Competition, held biennially in İzmir, in 2014. Solace is not a word used in everyday language. Its meaning is given in the dictionary as: “to give comfort to in grief or misfortune” or “to make cheerful." In the booklet of the album, Korkmaz Can Sağlam explains the title of his album as follows: “Solace is a representation of my search in finding comfort in music. I believe in the healing quality of music, how it can provide relief and take us to a better place during difficult times in our lives. This album is not a collection of soothing pieces, but rather works which made me confront my thoughts and feelings, and eventually helped me to make peace with them. I hope to inspire, evoke thoughts and feelings through this powerful music which had an enormous impact on my musical and personal journey.”

Can Korkmaz encourages the readers to attend classical music concerts. He says that

he hears concerns especially from his age group that they are afraid to go to concerts because they do not know enough about classical music. He believes that as musicians, they need to eliminate such prejudices. He invites everyone to attend classical music concerts and be open to their emotional reactions to the music they hear. He further states that especially the new generation is making great efforts to show people the different aspects of classical music through different platforms and he believes that these efforts will be rewarded and prejudices will be destroyed. ■

GLOBAL MINDSET

A global mindset is crucial for startups aiming for sustained growth and competitiveness, enabling access to a wider customer base, diverse talent pool, and global resources.

We will explore how startup tech companies can create and embrace a global mindset and why it is essential for their growth and survival. This was the topic of our panel and networking event on May 30th in Washington, DC.

In previous issues, we discussed productmarket fit and how to build a sustainable, scalable venture. These interconnected topics serve as the foundation for this month’s focus. The primary reason startups need a global mindset is simple: competition is inevitable. In a connected world where information and resources are accessible from anywhere, startups must proactively expand their reach. If they do not, others will seize the opportunity, backed by venture capitalists eager to support scalable innovations.

One common pitfall for entrepreneurs is the "middle-size market syndrome," where they focus solely on their local market, believing it is large enough to sustain their growth. This often leads to mediocrity in the long run and can be a significant barrier to global expansion. For example, Türkiye, with its 80 million people, might seem like a substantial market, but limiting a startup's ambitions to this alone can be short-sighted and hinder their potential for global success.

Startup tech companies succeed when they offer innovative, unique solutions to contemporary problems. This often involves raising awareness, educating the market, conquering it, and then moving on to new markets. In our interconnected world, ideas and opportunities flow seamlessly from one market to another. For instance, a startup in the US could develop a product for the local market, then adapt it for the European market, and later expand to the Asian market. Entrepreneurs with a global mindset are poised to capitalize on these

opportunities, benefiting from economies of scale, technological advancements, resources, and access to capital.

Achieving product-market fit involves localizing solutions, considering regulations, cultural differences, and trends. Accessing and retaining the brightest global talent is also feasible for high-growth organizations with a global perspective.

Starting in a large market like the US offers significant advantages. Success and high growth in the US provide access to capital, talent, and resources, including government support, to penetrate other markets. Utilizing grants and higher education resources and attracting the best talent worldwide make the US a strategic launching pad for global expansion. However, an international mindset, along with the right organizational structure and strategies, remains essential for success.

A global mindset is not just an option but a necessity for startup tech companies aiming for sustained growth and competitiveness. By embracing this approach, startups cannot only survive but thrive in the dynamic global marketplace, gaining access to a wider customer base, diverse talent pool, and global resources.

THE WORST OF DEMENTIA DISEASES: ALZHEIMER’S

Have you ever wondered how much would your body parts cost if there were an open transplant organ market? Wired magazine writer Patrick Di Justo researched this question by calculating the market value of the various individual organs, tissues, and substances of the human body and arrived at a total of around $46 million. He did not assign the highest value to brain, but if I had done this research, I would certainly have given the brain the highest value because of the devastating experience with my mother’s Alzheimer’s disease. My unavoidable interest in Alzheimer’s and the functioning of the brain began in 2011 when my mom was first diagnosed with the disease. I witnessed my mom’s suffering from all three stages of Alzheimer’s up to the moment she died in 2020. Four years after her death, what inspired me to write an article about

Alzheimer’s is a documentary I watched recently, “Little Empty Boxes”, about a Los Angeles film director Max Lugavere’s true story with his mother who was suffering with dementia. His experience was in some respects so aligned with my experience that I could not help but shine a light on Alzheimer’s.

In simplest terms, Alzheimer’s disease is a neurological disorder caused by damage

Alzheimer’s is a slowly progressing disease with three stages: mild, moderate, and severe. Early awareness of symptoms and lifestyle changes can help mitigate its impact.

to the neurons and the part of the brain responsible for learning, language, memory, and thinking. It is crucial to note that, while Alzheimer’s is a form of dementia, a general term which refers to memory, language, problem-solving and over thinking problems that affect a person’s daily activities, this does not mean that every person showing these symptoms necessarily has Alzheimer’s. Alzheimer’s is one particularly destructive form of dementia that profoundly affects the patient’s daily life in every way. Deterioration in the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh), which produces neurons responsible for learning and memory, and deterioration of the hippocampus in the forebrain, which is responsible for creating and storing new memories, are the two known direct causes of Alzheimer’s. However, the underlying factor causing the brain changes associated with Alzheimer’s is the accumulation of betaamyloid protein outside neurons and the

accumulation of an abnormal form of the protein tau (tau tangles) inside the neurons. Alzheimer’s is such a sneaky disease that it may begin many years before the first noticeable symptoms are diagnosed. According to the Alzheimer’s Association’s 2024 report, researchers have found that levels of beta-amyloid significantly increased 22 years before the first symptoms developed. It is a slowly progressing disease with three stages: mild, moderate, and severe. Mild Alzheimer's shows itself first with symptoms like repeating questions and forgetting recent conversations, names, and events. Other early symptoms are trouble in handling money, apathy, depression, poor judgment and poor decision-making. The daily lives of people living with Alzheimer’s and their loved ones are increasingly disrupted by symptoms like wandering off and getting lost, losing things, putting things in inappropriate places, increased anxiety, and aggression.

In the moderate stage, Alzheimer’s patients show symptoms such as difficulty with reading, writing, cognition, learning new things, getting dressed, and recognizing family members and friends. Even worse, patients in the moderate stage will experience hallucinations, delusions, paranoia, and impulsive behavior such as undressing in inappropriate places. Increased wandering off, explosions of anger, and repetitive muscle movements and utterances are also symptoms of the moderate stage. In the severe stage of Alzheimer’s, patients become totally dependent on others for their care and are confined to bed most or all of the time. Symptoms of the severe stage are a total loss of communication skills including speech, reading, and writing, as well as increased sleep and difficulty in swallowing that leads to weight loss. Other symptoms which make the lives of the patient and the people around them incredibly difficult are groaning and moaning, losing bowel and bladder control, seizures, and skin infections.

The Alzheimer’s Association’s report reveals that 6.9 million Americans 65 age and over live with Alzheimer’s. Of this population, 73% are aged 75 and older. This comes to about 1 in 9 people (10.9%) in the US aged 65 and older having Alzheimer’s. Age is the highest risk factor for Alzheimer’s, but it does not have a decisive effect on the development of the disease itself. Genetics and family history also have significant effects, but none of these three factors are necessarily decisive in the development of the disease. There are a large number of elderly Alzheimer’s patients who do not have any genetic or family history risk factors. In "Little Empty Boxes," Max Lugavere points out the importance of gut health and highlights unhealthy nutritional trends over more than half a century in the US as a risk factor in addition to genetic and age factors. Even though genetics, age, and family history are uncontrollable risk factors for developing the disease, there are modifiable risk factors that can either cause or prevent the disease. These depend on the individual’s lifestyle and include physical activity, smoking, staying socially and mentally active, blood pressure, diet, and staying away from chronic depression and stress.

LIFE COACHING

German medical doctor and Alzheimer’s author Michael Nehls notes that there were no diseases like Alzheimer’s 100 years ago. He bluntly calls it a disease of modern lifestyle. He even suggests that the COVID-19 virus SARS-Cov-2 and the spike proteins in COVID vaccines may be one of the causes of Alzheimer’s. Being mentally and physically active, learning new skills, eating a healthy diet, reducing stress and depression, developing self-love and compassion, and having a meaningful life purpose are strategies that might prevent the development of the disease. Since there are so many risk factors affecting the development of Alzheimer’s, it is crucial to be aware of the causes and the early symptoms to prevent or at least to mitigate the symptoms of the disease.

In the case of my mother’s Alzheimer’s, I realized after doing research on the disease that she had begun to show some of the mild symptoms almost 20 years before she was diagnosed at the second stage in 2011. Because we were not aware of the symptoms and the seriousness of the disease, we did not notice the early symptoms she showed from the very beginning of the disease. After her diagnosis, she passed through the second and the third stages of the disease, showing all of the aforementioned symptoms. If we had been more aware of the disease 20 years beforehand, I believe she might have had a chance to mitigate the symptoms by getting early treatment and choosing a healthy lifestyle in the initial stages of the disease. The first step in preventing the development of Alzheimer’s is to be aware of the causes and the early symptoms.

The closest family members and the caregivers of Alzheimer’s patients have huge responsibilities, challenges, and sacrifices to make, especially in the second and the third stages of the disease. Caregivers have to change their lifestyles and radically adjust their life conditions in accordance with the patients’ daily lives. The total dependency of patients on their

caregivers is just like childhood in reverse, with Alzheimer’s patients behaving more and more like infants as the disease progresses in its severe stage. Because it is not a curable or even reversible disease in its latter stages and because these stages may last for years, feelings of helplessness and hopelessness may naturally lead to depression for primary caretakers. The closest caregivers should not neglect their own psychological well-being and consider getting professional support to manage this difficult period. Having knowledge of the disease, being aware of and accepting the unavoidable symptoms of each stage and doing what needs to be done for the best of the patient, all help the caregivers and loved ones maintain their psychological well-being and deal with their situation.

The brain is the control center of the body, so if I had to choose, Alzheimer's would be the last disease I would pick for a loved one who is at the end of his or her life. My mom’s Alzheimer’s was the worst experience of my life, but also the most enlightening. It taught me the precious life lesson that there is no control over life without a healthy brain. If you take care of your brain first and foremost, it will be easier to take care of the rest of the body as you age. ■

My article explores just a handful of lucrative careers available in the US healthcare industry. These careers require at least a decade of higher education plus active collaboration with other health professionals on a day-to-day basis. While I also tried to highlight the financial rewards of each career, the true value lies in the positive impact these professionals have on patients’ lives.

In that case, you should also remember that the more quality you help add to your patients’ lives, the more rewarding your career will be, both personally and professionally.

PUBLIC RELATIONS

LEVERAGING “NEW MEDIA” EFFECTIVELY FOR DIASPORA PUBLIC RELATIONS

For diaspora communities, "new media" serves as a vital bridge, connecting them to their homeland and each other, preserving cultural roots, and facilitating political, social, and economic engagement.

In an increasingly interconnected world, the role of “new media” and information technologies has fundamentally transformed the public relations landscape. “New media” encompasses a variety of digital platforms, including social media, blogs, podcasts, and other online formats that facilitate interactive communication. It is possible to say that this shift from traditional media to more dynamic, two-way “new media” communication platforms has democratized information dissemination, enabling organizations to engage directly with their audiences. Unlike traditional media, which is a one-way communication, “new media” encourages dialogue, fostering a more personal connection.

In the age of globalization, diaspora communities play a pivotal role in their home countries' cultural, economic, and political landscapes. Public relations (PR) strategies must engage effectively with these widespread communities, utilizing “new media” as a primary tool. For diaspora communities, “new media” is a vital connection point that diminishes the physical distance separating them from their country of origin. “New media,” encompassing social media platforms, blogs, video-sharing sites, and more, acts as a bridge that connects the diaspora to their homeland and each other. These digital platforms help individuals stay connected to their cultural roots, which is crucial for maintaining identity and heritage, and serve as channels for political, social, and economic engagement.

One of the most effective uses of “new media” in diaspora PR is to promote cultural events and national holidays that resonate with diaspora communities. Platforms like X, Instagram, and YouTube can broadcast live events, share traditional music, and showcase cultural festivals, thus keeping the diaspora connected to their cultural roots.

“New media” is vital for educating and informing the diaspora about developments in their home countries. This can include economic opportunities, law changes, or important political events. By providing reliable and timely information, Public relations campaigns can empower the diaspora to participate more fully in their homeland's democratic processes and development initiatives.

Engaging the diaspora is n ot just about sending information; it i s also about building a conversation. Interactive campaigns, such as Q&A sessions with homeland leaders or digital forums for diaspora members, can foster a greater sense of community and belonging. These interactions are instrumental in understanding the diaspora's needs and shaping communications accordingly.

“New media” allows diaspora members to act as ambassadors or advocates for their homeland. Through strategic storytelling and content creation, diaspora members can be encouraged to share their success stories or experiences that highlight their connection to their homeland, effectively shaping public perception and fostering goodwill.

However, the challenge of the spread of misinformation as well as privacy concerns are significant issues that need careful handling. PR strategies must prioritize transparency and authenticity to maintain trust. Furthermore, respecting the privacy and data of users by complying with international data protection regulations is crucial. There is also the matter of ensuring that the messages spread through “new media” do not exploit the diaspora’s connection to their homeland but enhance it in meaningful ways. This includes sensitivity to the political and social nuances affecting diaspora communities.

In conclusion, integrating “new media” and information technologies into public relations strategies has provided powerful tools for engaging with the diaspora. “ New media” is a powerful tool to bridge the physical distances that separate individuals from their homelands, fostering a sense of belonging and active participation in cultural and political processes in homeland affairs. However, success in this arena requires a balanced approach that combines innovative engagement strategies with a strong ethical foundation. ■

ANKARA: THE CAPITAL OF TÜRKİYE

Ankara, Ankara; güzel Ankara! Seni görmek ister her bahtı kara.

What is Ankara to me and to all Turkish citizens? First of all, it is the capital. It is where the parliament and all ministries are. It is where our republic was founded. I used to wonder a lot why the words “Bahtı Kara” are in the Ankara anthem. Especially in the first years of the republic, you could have solved many bureaucratic problems in Ankara.

But for me, it is very special beyond that. It is where I studied at university (Middle East Technical University)—that beautiful, innovative, and very special university.

Besides that, Ankara has many specialties. One of them is the Ankara State Opera and Ballet. We used to go there, and it was free for University Students.

Of course, I will start with Anıtkabir. Anıtkabir: It is the Mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. Anyone, regardless of their age, gender, or belief, should visit this incredible monument. Designed by Emin Onat and Orhan Arda, the construction of Anıtkabir began in 1944 and was completed in 1953. Beholding an entire history, Anıtkabir reveals the stories and glorious victories of the Turkish Republic. the Road of Lions, the Ceremonial Plaza, the Hall of Honor (location of Atatürk's tomb), and the Peace Park surrounding the monument. One of the mustsee things in Anıtkabir is the moment of the soldier’s switching guards. Every hour, the soldiers change shifts, which is incredible to watch. So, if you visit Anıtkabir, do not skip this detail and try to plan your visit to experience this moment.

Museum of Anatolian Civilizations:

Ankara has many museums. One of the most predominant of them is The Museum of Anatolian Civilizations, which was started by the orders of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk in 1921. Since then, there have been numerous exhibits of Anatolian archeology. Anatolia is an ancient geography that has hosted civilizations throughout the ages. They start with the Paleolithic era and continue chronologically through the Neolithic, Early Bronze, Assyrian trading colonies, Hittite, Phrygian, Urartian, Greek, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuq, and Ottoman periods. There is also an extensive collection of artifacts from the excavations at Karain, Çatalhöyük, Hacılar, Canhasan, Beyce Sultan, Alacahöyük, Kültepe, Acemhöyük, Boğazköy (Gordion), Pazarlı, Altıntepe, Adilcevaz, and Patnos, as well as examples of several periods.

Middle East Technical University (METU)

Designed by famous architects Behruz Çinici and Altug Çinici, METU occupies an area of 11,100 acres (4,500 ha), of which 7,500 acres (3,000 ha) constitute the METU Forest. As a distinguished research university, METU has been committed to excellence in science and top-quality higher education since its foundation. METU is a public technical university with an English curriculum. The university emphasizes research and education in engineering, natural sciences, and social sciences. It is one of the symbols of Ankara, and it has approximately 27,000 students.

The Faculty of Political Science of the University of Ankara (Siyasal Bilgiler) The school has been a symbol of freedom of expression and organization (Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia). Many diplomats, ambassadors, and statesmen have been educated there.

Of course, Ankara has many good universities and schools. The city is known as the city of students.

Ankara Castle: It is a historic fortification in Ankara, constructed in or after the 7th century. The castle was rebuilt or renovated under the Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk, and Ottoman empires. The castle contains outer walls and inner walls. Both sets of walls were constructed using large quantities of reused masonry. The exact dates of their construction are uncertain. The castle overlooks the city and has a 360-degree view of Ankara. There is an old town within the castle with lovely coffee shops and old historic houses.

Eymir Lake: Located approximately 20 kilometers from the city centre of Ankara, Eymir Lake is a paradise for nature lovers. Offering a quiet and calm natural environment, this beautiful place attracts people who want to escape the traffic, noise, tension, and chaos of everyday city life. Eymir Lake is sheltered inside a park, which people visit for several outdoor activities.

Genclik Parkı: In the city's heart, Gençlik Parkı has a lake and fountains (lit up after dark), colorful flower beds, and plenty of space for kids to run about. It is a trendy spot on the weekend for strolling or simply hanging out.

Kızılay: The Turkish name of Kizilay Meydani translates literally as Red Crescent Square, which relates to the humanitarian organization known as the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. This spacious square in the center of Ankara is a lively cultural hub surrounded by malls, restaurants, and hotels. Kizilay is a popular area because it is close to many attractions and has excellent transportation links to the center of Ankara. Plenty of hotels and restaurants in the vicinity satisfy travelers’ accommodation needs. Kizilay Square is the political plaza of the city where you might see many events, rallies, and protests.

Ankara State Opera and Ballet: State Opera and Ballet is the cultural reflection of a new modern Turkish nation coming into life in 1923 as a new idea. In the period before the proclamation of the Republic in Türkiye, opera, ballet, and theatre were mostly centered

around Istanbul and Izmir. The first showing of opera at the Ottoman court was by artists trained by Guiseppe Donizetti (1788-1856) from the Italian opera. During the Republic, Ahmet Adnan Saygun, Necil Kazim Akses, and Cemal Resit Rey were the first composers of opera, operettas, and musicals. ■

US WELCOMES TOP STEM TALENTS, USHERING IN A NEW ERA OF BRAIN DRAIN

STEM fields—Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics—are the pillars of progress, drawing the brightest minds

to the US through state-of-the-art research centers and a dynamic start-up ecosystem.

In global innovation, STEM fields—science, technology, engineering, and mathematics—are pillars of progress. The United States, pursuing dominance in these sectors, has become the immigration target for the brightest minds worldwide. State-of-the-art research centers, a dynamic start-up ecosystem, and significant technological investments attract thousands of top-notch talents to the US annually. This phenomenon, often referred to as "brain drain," is not accidental but the result of strategic positioning by the US to maintain its leadership in innovation and technology. The relationship between the US and foreign STEM professionals is a testament to the country's longstanding aspiration to be at the forefront of technological breakthroughs, shaping a new era where knowledge is universal.

STEM Fields, Brain Drain, and the US

The US proves the power of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. These STEM fields are not just academic endeavors but the backbones of American innovation, driving economic growth and securing its status as a global leader. Moreover, the US's continuous pursuit of scientific advancement has positioned the nation as the center of technological innovation. Silicon Valley is a focal point for groundbreaking ideas within this more significant trend.

Historically, the United States has thrived financially thanks to the intellect and creativity of its diverse population, including immigrants who have left permanent marks on the nation's scientific heritage. The US’s industrial and technological revolutions were fueled, in part, by the contributions of foreign-born innovators, and the trend continues today.

The American ideals of discovery and entrepreneurship resonate with STEM professionals worldwide, attracting them to participate in the US's pursuit of revolutionary progress. This is due to the mutual recognition of value between the US and these talented individuals. The United States offers a variety of world-class opportunities for research, innovation, and professional development, while immigrants provide fresh perspectives and specialized skills. This exchange has brought the US to the frontlines of scientific inquiry and technological innovation, effectively making it the go-to destination for the world's brightest STEM professionals. Henceforth, the ongoing collaboration between American institutions and international talent is essential for sustaining the nation's economic leadership and scientific influence.

“Biden-Harris Administration’s Actions on STEM Fields”

Recognizing the vital role STEM fields play in national wealth, the Biden-Harris administration has taken decisive steps to further strengthen the US's position in the global STEM industry. The White House has outlined a comprehensive strategy to empower the nation's economy and retain its universal competitiveness. Key initiatives include the Global Talent Attraction program, which stresses the significance of inviting international STEM experts to enrich the US workforce. The Early Career STEM Research Initiative and the expansion of the STEM OPT program reflect a bold effort to provide international scholars and students with opportunities to engage in groundbreaking research on US soil. Updates to the O-1A classification and National Interest Waivers show a commitment to simplifying the immigration process for individuals with extraordinary abilities in STEM fields. These proactive measures are designed to attract and keep the best and brightest, ensuring that the US remains at the forefront of scientific and technological advancement.

Critical & Emerging Technologies and the Advent of Artificial Intelligence in STEM Fields

Within the critical and emerging technologies industry, artificial intelligence (AI), quantum computing, and cybersecurity stand out as pivotal areas shaping the future. These technologies are the superstars of innovation, driving revolutionary changes across industries and redefining the boundaries of what is possible.

Artificial Intelligence, in particular, represents a giant leap in technological progress and reshapes our personal and professional lives every day. As AI systems become more sophisticated, they influence sectors from healthcare to finance, making it a driving force behind modern innovations and a critical component of the US strategic advantage. Moreover, AI’s rapid rise necessitates a skilled but also innovative and diverse workforce capable of pushing the limits of what it can achieve.

In this context, immigrants' contributions are invaluable. The National Foundation for American Policy's (NFAP) study in June 2023 proves the immense impact that immigrants

have had on the AI sector. With 65% of the top AI companies in the US having immigrant founders or co-founders and 70% of full-time graduate students in AI-related fields coming from abroad, it is evident that immigrants' intellectual capital and entrepreneurial spirit are key to the AI industry's success.

Fortunately, these STEM professionals often benefit from specialized visas and Green Cards that recognize their exceptional talents and significant roles in advancing US interests. For example, the O-1 visa category, for those demonstrating extraordinary abilities, and the H-1B visa, a common choice for specialty occupation professionals, are popular options in bringing these individuals to the US. The EB-1A self-petition Green Card is reserved for those who can prove they are at the top of their field, offering them a pathway to permanent residency. Similarly, the EB-2 NIW (National Interest Waiver) Green Card, also a self-petition, is designed for professionals whose work is considered national importance.

This strategic immigration framework is essential for filling immediate workforce gaps and supporting long-term innovation. By

providing a clear path for talented AI professionals to contribute to the US economy, the nation sustains its status as a global authority in AI research and development.

I can almost certainly say that the interplay between AI's rise and the US's immigration policies will create a consistent flow of brain drain. As the United States continues to prioritize the development of AI and other critical technologies, it will likely benefit from the increased issuance of visas and Green Cards to international STEM talents. This approach ensures that the US remains at the forefront of the global innovation landscape, continually attracting the brightest minds to contribute to a future where AI thrives and serves the greater good. ■

Born and raised in Kayseri, Türkiye, Turan's journey to the United States began after his early education in hotel management, leading him to roles in prestigious Turkish resorts. His transition to America was marked by a fateful meeting with a US Congressman, inspiring him to pursue further education at the University of DC where he earned degrees in political science and economics.

Licensed since 2002, Turan's approach to real estate is deeply personalized. He excels in market analysis, always aligning his strategies with his clients’ needs and budgets to identify the perfect property. Turan’s philosophy centers on the belief that purchasing a home is not just a financial transaction, but a pivotal life decision. He ensures every property is scrutinized as if he were the buyer, maintaining an honest dialogue about each home's potential.

During the tumultuous times of the 2008 real estate bubble, Turan’s expertise became especially valuable. He adeptly navigated the challenging market conditions, advising clients when to buy and helping them capitalize on opportunities, turning a crisis into a chance for advantageous investment.

Turan’s commitment extends beyond property transactions. He is available around the clock, proving his dedication through continuous support in finding tenants, managing properties, and even solving maintenance issues long after the ink has dried on the sale documents. His deep-rooted understanding of the importance of community and home ownership, particularly within the Turkish

culture, drives his success and fosters lasting relationships with his clients.

Additionally, Turan's passion for US politics and community service, inherited from his grandfather, a revered community leader in Türkiye, enriches his understanding of community dynamics and governance, further enhancing his service to his clients.

For those looking to navigate the real estate market, be it buying a dream home or selling one, Turan Tombul offers not just real estate expertise, but a partnership built on trust, respect, and a mutual understanding of the value of home.
