ISTANBUL REVAMPS TAXIS WITH NEW APP-BASED SYSTEM

Istanbul authorities are set to redesign taxis as part of a new app-based system aimed at tackling route manipulation, short-distance refusals, and tourist overcharging. The initiative includes the rollout of 2,500 app-hail taxis and a public vote on new designs via the “Istanbul Senin” app, offering five options in yellow, white, and red.

The revamped taxis will eliminate rooftop lights, accepting passengers exclusively through licensed apps or designated stands. New features include checkered patterns and security partitions for enhanced safety.

Digital payments, with no passenger commission fees, will ensure transparency and allow authorities to monitor transactions.

The system aims to boost service quality, improve the public image of taxi drivers, and transition Istanbul’s taxi network to a more organized, corporate structure.

THE AMERICAN HOLIDAY TRADITIONS IN DECEMBER: A CELEBRATION OF UNITY AND JOY

The beauty of December’s holiday traditions lies in their diversity, uniting us through shared themes of love, generosity, and hope.

December is one of the most festive months in the United States, marked by a rich tapestry of traditions, celebrations, and cultural practices. While the month is most associated with Christmas, it also encompasses other significant holidays like Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and even New Year’s Eve preparations. Each celebration reflects a unique cultural heritage, yet all share common themes of togetherness, gratitude, and the spirit of giving. Let us explore the diverse and vibrant holiday traditions that make December so special in America.

CHRISTMAS: THE HEART OF DECEMBER CELEBRATIONS

Christmas is undoubtedly the most prominent December holiday in the United States. Rooted in Christian traditions, it commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ on December 25. Over the years, however, Christmas has transcended its religious origins to become a broadly celebrated cultural event.

The Christmas season officially kicks off after Thanksgiving, with Black Friday marking the start of the holiday shopping spree. Streets, homes, and public spaces come alive with dazzling lights, festive decorations, and elaborate Christmas trees. Families often gather to trim their trees

with ornaments, garlands, and star or angel toppers, a ritual that brings people closer.

Gift-giving is a central part of Christmas, inspired by the story of the Three Wise Men bringing gifts to the baby Jesus. Americans spend weeks carefully selecting presents for loved ones, wrapping them in colorful paper and ribbons, and placing them under the Christmas tree. Santa Claus, the jolly figure who delivers gifts on Christmas Eve, is a cherished symbol for children, who eagerly await his visit.

Food also plays a pivotal role in Christmas traditions. Families prepare feasts featuring roast turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and an array of desserts like pumpkin

pie, gingerbread cookies, and fruitcake. Caroling, where groups sing traditional holiday songs door-to-door, adds a joyful musical note to the season.

HANUKKAH: THE FESTIVAL OF LIGHTS

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday celebrated in December (though its dates vary each year). It commemorates the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and the miracle of the oil that burned for eight days.

A central symbol of Hanukkah is the menorah, a candelabrum with nine branches. Each night, one additional candle is lit, accompanied by blessings and songs. Families often gather to enjoy traditional foods fried in oil, such as latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts), symbolizing the miracle of the oil.

Children play games with dreidels, four-sided spinning tops inscribed with Hebrew letters, and receive Hanukkah gelt, which can be chocolate coins or real money. Hanukkah is a time for family, reflection, and the celebration of Jewish heritage.

KWANZAA: HONORING AFRICAN HERITAGE

Kwanzaa, celebrated from December 26 to January 1, is a relatively modern holiday established in 1966 by Dr Maulana Karenga. It honors African heritage and culture, focusing on seven core principles, or “Nguzo Saba,” which include unity, self-determination, collective work, and responsibility.

During Kwanzaa, families light a kinara, a seven-branched candleholder, with each candle representing one of the principles. The holiday also includes storytelling, poetry readings, and the sharing of traditional African and AfricanAmerican foods.

Kwanzaa emphasizes community and reflection, making it a meaningful addition to December’s holiday calendar.

NEW YEAR’S EVE: WELCOMING THE FUTURE

As December comes to a close, Americans prepare to ring in the New Year on December 31. New Year’s Eve is marked by lively parties, fireworks, and the iconic ball drop in Times Square, New York City. Millions gather in person and via

television to count down the final seconds of the year, cheering and toasting with champagne when the clock strikes midnight.

Resolutions are another key aspect of New Year’s traditions. People reflect on the past year and set goals for self-improvement, from health and fitness to personal and professional ambitions.

THE SPIRIT OF GIVING AND TOGETHERNESS

A unifying thread across all these holidays is the emphasis on giving and spending time with loved ones. Charitable acts, such as donating to food banks, volunteering, or participating in toy drives, are common in December. Communities come together to ensure that everyone, regardless of their circumstances, can experience the joy of the season.

In workplaces, holiday parties and Secret Santa gift exchanges foster camaraderie among colleagues. Schools often host concerts and plays, showcasing students’ talent and holiday spirit. Neighbors exchange baked goods or host

festive gatherings, strengthening community bonds.

DIVERSE TRADITIONS, SHARED JOY

The beauty of December’s holiday traditions lies in their diversity. Whether lighting a menorah, trimming a Christmas tree, or reflecting on the principles of Kwanzaa, Americans find unique ways to celebrate their heritage while embracing the universal themes of love, generosity, and hope.

In a nation as multicultural as the United States, these traditions enrich the fabric of society, offering opportunities to learn about and appreciate different cultures. December is a reminder that despite our differences, the desire to connect and celebrate unites us all.

As the year draws to a close, the holidays provide a chance to reflect on the past, cherish the present, and look forward to the future. In the glow of twinkling lights and the warmth of shared moments, the true magic of December is revealed: a celebration of unity and joy that transcends boundaries. ■

YEAR-END GIVING WITH

DONOR-ADVISED

FUNDS: STORIES OF IMPACT AND FLEXIBILITY FROM TPF DONORS

"Whether it is responding to disasters or funding scholarships, my donor-advised fund ensures every contribution counts where it is needed most."

As the year comes to a close, many philanthropists reflect on the causes they hold dear and the impact they want to leave behind. For many TPF community donors, this time of year is more than just a moment of reflection—it is an opportunity to make a difference in the causes that matter to them most through one of the most powerful charitable tools available today: a donor-advised fund (DAF) at TPF. For our donors, a DAF is more than just a financial tool; it is a platform for creating lasting change, especially in a year marked by critical needs in Türkiye and beyond.

DAFs are among the fastest-growing vehicles for charitable giving, offering donors the chance to make a tax-deductible contribution now, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then strategically recommend

grants to nonprofits of their choice over time. As one of our donors, Elif explains, “A donor-advised fund lets me support both immediate and long-term goals. It is comforting to know that I can contribute now for a tax benefit, then take the time to decide exactly where my funds will have the most impact. ”This flexibility and tax efficiency make DAFs especially popular for year-end when donors are focused on maximizing their tax advantages.

For TPF donors like Ahmet, this flexibility has been crucial. After last year’s wildfires in Hawaii, his DAF enabled him to quickly direct funds to local relief efforts, ensuring his support reached the community when it was most needed. Like Ahmet, Kerem values the ability to respond to urgent needs through his DAF: “With TPF handling the administrative work, I can focus on my vision for how I want to support disaster recovery and longterm rebuilding efforts,” he says.

As the year-end approaches, TPF’s donors are making the most of their DAFs to maximize both their tax advantages and philanthropic goals. Contributing to a DAF now allows them to benefit from a tax deduction before December 31 while giving them the flexibility to make grant recommendations over the coming months. For many, this strategic advantage makes year-end giving not only a financial decision but also a meaningful step toward their philanthropic legacy.

Each donor’s journey is unique, and their DAFs allow them to tailor their giving. Elif, who is passionate about education, has used her DAF to support scholarship programs in Türkiye. “With a DAF, I can make a difference in ways that align with my values and longterm goals,” she shares. For Kerem, his DAF is a way to support multiple causes year-round, whether it is mental health resources, economic development, or emergency response.

“I want to be agile in my giving,” he says. “The DAF allows me to pivot based on what is happening in the world.”

In addition to flexibility, DAFs also provide donors with a variety of giving options, including the ability to donate appreciated assets like stocks, which can offer additional tax advantages. This versatility is one more reason TPF donors are turning to DAFs for their year-end giving, allowing them to contribute strategically while amplifying their impact. If you are uncertain about which causes to support, consider opening a

About Turkish Philanthropy Funds

For 17 years, Turkish Philanthropy Funds (TPF) has served our community to channel the generosity of over 100,000 donors to disburse more than $40 million. As a community foundation, our intimate knowledge of community needs has fueled innovative solutions to pressing challenges. We have directly impacted over 3 million lives, offering strategic guidance to donors to maximize

donor-advised fund (DAF) at TPF. This option allows you to receive a tax deduction now and decide on charities later. A popular strategy is “bunching,” where you combine multiple years of donations into one, maximizing your deduction in 2024 while distributing grants over time. New DAFs can be opened at TPF by noon on Monday, December 30.

Our donors’ stories reflect a shared vision within TPF’s community: to build a brighter future for our communities. They exemplify how a donor-advised fund can

their philanthropic reach. TPF is a collaborative hub where donors, businesses, and nonprofits unite, pooling resources and expertise. Together, we have fostered resilient communities and built a LEGACY of positive change that we are all proud of. www.tpfund.org

be a transformative tool in philanthropy. As Ahmet, Elif, and Kerem look toward the new year, their DAFs remain a powerful testament to a new era of philanthropy— one where giving is both impactful and adaptable.

Together, they are shaping a legacy that will resonate far beyond the holiday season.

As TPF continues to support them on their journey, their collective impact shines as a reminder of how, through DAFs, donors can build a meaningful, lasting difference for years to come. ■

COMMUNITY STAR: BARBAROS TAPAN

Barbaros Tapan, the December Community Star, is a renowned journalist and Hollywood Foreign Press Association member who brings Turkish culture to the global stage.

As a Golden Globes voting member, he champions cultural exchange through events like Turkish Film and Drama Days. Barbaros continues inspiring and connecting communities worldwide with his dedication and impactful work.

In this issue, we are thrilled to welcome an extraordinary guest—Barbaros Tapan, a highly accomplished Turkish journalist thriving in the world of film and television in America. Based in Los Angeles with his lovely wife, Elif Tapan, Mr Tapan has been a Hollywood Foreign Press Association member and a voting member of the Golden Globe Awards since 2016. As many know, the Golden Globes recognize and celebrate some of the world’s most prominent achievements in television and film. Beyond

this, Barbaros Tapan organizes Turkish film and drama days in Hollywood, bringing similar cultural programs to Türkiye. With a rich résumé, numerous accolades, and diverse activities, we could not be more excited to share his story with you.

Let us start from the beginning. Where were you born, and what was your early life like? How did you come to the United States?

First of all, thank you for having me. I was born in 1974 in Kuzguncuk, Istanbul, a beautiful

neighborhood along the Bosphorus. I was fortunate to have a childhood shaped by the area's cultural richness. However, when I was 13 or 14, my family moved to Gebze, where I completed high school. After graduation, I returned to Istanbul and started my professional life in hospitality. I worked part-time in Bodrum during summer breaks, doing jobs like hotel cashiering. Though I studied electronics in high school, hospitality became my true calling.

I worked at prominent establishments like Çırağan Palace and Hyatt Regency. At 21, I applied to Royal Caribbean Cruises and was offered a position. This marked my first step into America. I did not plan on a long career with the cruise line—I wanted to experience American culture and pursue my education. After a year, I moved to Los Angeles, where I attended language school and later college, focusing on TV broadcasting and media studies. That decision shaped my path forward.

Today, you are a distinguished journalist in one of the most challenging industries in America. How did you achieve such success? Could you share your journey?

It certainly did not happen overnight. I arrived in Los Angeles in 1996, and my first couple of years were spent adapting—understanding the city, the culture, and how life worked here. Like

We must take pride in our heritage and represent Türkiye with dignity. Promoting our culture is how we gain respect on the global stage.

many, I worked part-time jobs, including in restaurants and bars. My background in hospitality helped me connect with people from diverse cultures, especially in cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Miami.

After completing my education, I pursued my lifelong passion for journalism and storytelling. My parents worked at Hürriyet newspaper in Türkiye, where they met and married. In a way, journalism was in my DNA. In 2000, I started as a correspondent for Doğan News Agency, covering stories like Hidayet Türkoğlu’s NBA career. That laid the groundwork for my career in Hollywood.

Bodrum holds a special place in your heart. Tell us about your experiences there, especially the recent Golden Globe International Icon Award event featuring Sharon Stone.

Bodrum has always been dear to me. As a teenager, I spent summers working there, and even today, my wife and I make it a point to spend our summers in Bodrum. It brings back memories of my youth.

This year, we introduced the “International Icon Award” under the Golden Globes, marking the first time such an award was presented outside the US. The idea was to showcase Türkiye’s beauty and culture while contributing to tourism and the arts. I had long dreamed of organizing

a Golden Globe event in Istanbul or Bodrum.

We had only a month to plan when Sharon Stone agreed to attend. Despite the short time line, with the support of my incredible wife, Elif, and a dedicated team, we hosted a flawless event at the Titanic Hotel in Bodrum. Sharon was thrilled—she even joked about moving to Bodrum if certain political events unfolded in the US. It was an unforgettable experience, professionally and personally, and a proud moment for Türkiye.

they compare to American productions?

You have interviewed over 300 celebrities. What stands out most from your experiences?

Each interview is unique and valuable, whether with a Hollywood star or an everyday individual. Growing up in Kuzguncuk, I watched movies at the local outdoor cinema, dreaming of meeting the stars on screen. Years later, I found myself sitting across from icons like Sylvester Stallone, Al Pacino, and many others.

One memorable moment was telling Sylvester Stallone how I had watched Rocky as a child on a wooden chair in that open-air cinema. He loved hearing that story. Similarly, interviewing Al Pacino three times was surreal; he remains one of my favorite actors. These experiences are a testament to the magic of following one’s dreams.

Turkish dramas have achieved remarkable global success, airing in over 120 countries. Shows like Magnificent Century opened the doors to international recognition. However, we must focus on innovation, higher production quality, and shorter series formats like mini-series to stay competitive.

American productions have decades of systemic development behind them, shaped by historical and cultural milestones. In contrast, the Turkish industry is still evolving. That said, Türkiye’s potential is immense. We have incredible talent, but we must also invest in promoting our films and series internationally, ensuring they reach global audiences through festivals and award seasons.

Finally, what message would you like to share with our readers?

I encourage all Turks, whether in Türkiye, the US, or elsewhere, to take pride in their heritage

and represent our country with dignity. We must cherish and promote our culture and values, as that is how we build a strong identity and gain the world’s respect.

Thank you for your time and inspiring insights. You are a community star and a source of pride for us all.

Thank you. I see myself as a small part of a much larger journey for the Turkish community. Together, I hope we achieve even more significant milestones in the future. ■

A NEW BARRIER TO ECOMMERCE: THE WITHHOLDING TAX PROPOSAL

The proposed withholding tax risks undermining Türkiye’s ecommerce ecosystem, potentially driving up costs for consumers and discouraging investment from global giants like Amazon and Walmart.

Türkiye’s recent economic fluctuations have prompted the search for new revenue streams, igniting debates about the broader impacts of these measures on economic stability. Central to these discussions is the Ministry of Finance’s proposed amendment, outlined in Income Tax General Communiqué No. 329 and Law No. 7524, which aims to introduce significant changes to the taxation landscape.

Set to take effect in 2025, this proposal

mandates a withholding tax on payments made by ecommerce platforms to suppliers of goods and services. The proposed rates are 25% for individual suppliers and 15% for corporate suppliers. While the measure is intended to bolster government revenue, a closer examination highlights potential challenges for the ecommerce sector.

Impact on the eCommerce Ecosystem ecommerce has been a cornerstone of Türkiye’s global economic competitiveness, enabling access to affordable products domestically

while raising the profile of Turkish brands abroad. However, the proposed withholding tax presents risks that could disrupt this thriving sector:

◗ Weakened Competitiveness: High withholding rates could shrink profit margins for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating on ecommerce platforms, forcing them to raise prices or cease operations entirely.

◗ Higher Costs for Consumers: Sellers’ increased costs would inevitably lead to

PHOTO

higher prices for consumers, fueling inflation and eroding purchasing power.

◗ Deterrence of Investments: Global ecommerce giants like Amazon and Walmart might hesitate to expand further in Türkiye— or even reconsider current investments. Local platforms could similarly struggle to compete internationally.

A Balanced Approach to Tax Policy

While increasing tax revenues and addressing the informal economy are critical objectives, the economic burdens on key stakeholders must be carefully considered. A balanced approach could involve:

◗ Reevaluating withholding tax rates to set them at more sustainable levels.

◗ Providing ecommerce platforms with a transitional period to adapt to the new requirements.

◗ Introducing incentives to support SMEs and offset the adverse effects of the regulation.

A Call for Strategic Policy

As the Ministry of Finance finalizes this regulation, it must recognize the strategic importance of the ecommerce sector to Türkiye’s economy. Well-structured policies can achieve immediate revenue goals while fostering long-term growth and sustainability.

With meaningful input from industry stakeholders, the regulation could strike a fair balance that allows Türkiye’s ecommerce ecosystem to thrive without unnecessary disruption. After all, is not our shared goal to ensure a stronger, more prosperous economic future for Türkiye? ■

FROM NORTH CAROLINA TO BİTLİS: HOW ONE EMAIL SPARKED AN ENTIRE MOVEMENT

What began as a simple request for school supplies in a remote village has grown into a movement, touching the lives of over 150,000 students across rural Türkiye.

In the spirit of this season of giving, I want to tell you a story that defines the mission I am proud to champion at the Bridge to Türkiye Fund (BTF). It is a story that begins in a remote village in Türkiye, a place that, for most of us, would be little more than a dot on the map—if it appeared. Yet in this quiet place, isolated by rugged terrain and winding roads, one young teacher’s vision would set off a ripple, eventually reaching BTF and sparking a movement.

In 2007, an email appeared at info@ bridgetoturkiye.org, then an inbox that seldom saw anything beyond the occasional newsletter sign-up. The sender was Edip Ceyhan, a 20-something teacher recently assigned to the mountain village of Ağılözü in Hizan, Bitlis. Fresh out of college, Edip was in a one-room schoolhouse with thirty students and almost no materials to teach them.

At that time, internet access in rural Türkiye was scarce, and teachers like Edip lived in near-isolation, with weekly trips to town as their only link to the outside world. But Edip noticed that a nearby military outpost had recently installed a landline internet connection, and he seized this rare opportunity

to reach beyond his village. Each evening, he would sit by the faint glow of his monitor at home, searching for ways to bridge the vast distance between his isolated village and the world beyond. One night, he stumbled upon a small American nonprofit called the Bridge to Türkiye Fund and, with a hopeful heart, typed out a message and pressed send.

“I’m trying to raise individuals who look to the future with confidence. Here, I’m teaching on my own in a mountain village. Our children do not even have notebooks to write in. I need your support to raise young people who will grow up to love their country and look to the future with hope.”

Edip’s message went deeper than a request for school supplies. It was a call for solidarity, for someone to acknowledge the quiet determination of a community surviving on the thin margins of support. BTF answered his call.

What began as a modest shipment of

basic school supplies soon evolved. Word of Edip’s work with BTF spread to neighboring villages, creating a network of dedicated educators who began reaching out to BTF. In collaboration with the teachers, BTF volunteers soon realized that these schools needed more than notebooks and pencils –they needed educational materials that could expand students’ horizons. And so, the BTF4Kids initiative took shape, driven by the vision that no child, however remote their village, should be deprived of the tools to dream. From bilingual dictionaries to science kits and books that opened up new worlds, each BTF4Kids set was crafted to feed curiosity and stoke ambition in Türkiye’s youngest minds.

As word spread, the program grew, expanding from that first school in Bitlis to hundreds of rural schools across Türkiye, reaching over 150,000 students. BTF’s volunteers and donors rallied to create a community that teachers like Edip could rely on—a network of people who cared deeply and believed in the potential of every child, no matter where they called home.

Today, BTF’s initiative continues, now

Get Ready for Giving Tuesday with BTF

Nurgül Doğan, a volunteerturned-board member who reached nearly 100 village schools in Türkiye

I first connected with BTF in 2014 as an ordinary donor, right after the mine disaster in Soma. I had only vaguely heard of BTF, but I felt the need to give back to Türkiye in some way, so I made a donation. Soon after, BTF leadership reached out. They mentioned they did not have any volunteers from Oregon and asked if I would help mobilize local support. Honestly, I hesitated. There had been scandals involving overseas Turkish organizations, and trust was shaky. But eventually, I did—and I am so glad for that decision. One of the first projects I worked on was the Adopt A Classroom program, supporting underserved village schools. I began by reaching out to teachers to learn what their classrooms were lacking. From there, I developed the Art4Kids set to provide art supplies and spark creativity in young students. Seeing the photos of those kids with huge smiles, using the supplies we sent, was priceless. It reminded me exactly why I got involved—to make a real difference in the lives of children who need it most.

Her warmth, humility, and wisdom shine through as she opens up about her inspirations, challenges, and hopes for the future.

Join us as we explore the life and journey of Büşra Kayı Tarhan—a woman who exemplifies the power of passion and perseverance.

Can you tell us about your early beginnings? Your childhood, original birthplace, and family?

I was born in Cihangir, Istanbul, as an only child. However, I spent most of my childhood with my grandmother and grandfather, surrounded by my cousins. This upbringing gave

me a sense of familial warmth and community, even in the absence of siblings.

What factors influenced you most in your formative years? Your early and higher education?

My interest in art started in high school at Nişantaşı Anatolian High School, where I studied in the painting department. From there, I transitioned into fashion design, blending creativity with practical skills.

Music entered my life through my father, who introduced me to a variety of records. Additionally, my uncles played the saz, fostering my love for traditional Turkish music. This interest led me to the Müjdat Gezen Conservatory, where I studied Turkish classical music for two years. Although I later pursued fashion design professionally, my passion for music never faded. I also hold a bachelor’s degree in American Culture and Literature.

When did you realize you had a wonderful voice and decide to pursue a musical career?

As a child, people frequently handed me the microphone at weddings and social gatherings. My mother’s encouragement and the applause from audiences made me realize I had a gift. This recognition grew stronger

during primary school, when my teacher praised my voice after hearing me sing hymns. After marriage, my husband encouraged me to explore my talent further. We created a YouTube channel together, which allowed me to connect with a larger audience. Moving to the US offered even more opportunities, and my musical journey truly took off.

How did your career develop?

My career blossomed in the US, where I started performing at small gatherings and events. Sharing my music on social media built a loyal fan base. Friends and family played a crucial role, encouraging me to take my talent seriously. Their support gave me the confidence to pursue music professionally.

Could you share your journey to the US and your initial impressions?

My first visit to America was as a tourist, traveling from New York to Washington and Miami with my two-year-old son. After two years back in Türkiye, we decided to relocate permanently for my son’s education. While adjusting to a new country was challenging—especially in a metropolitan city like New York—I found stability in Washington, where I built my home and career from scratch.

My immediate family in the US consists of my husband and son, while most of my relatives remain in Türkiye. Despite being far from family, I have found a sense of belonging through the Turkish-American community.

I became a member of the American Turkish Association two years ago, participating in events like the Turkish Festival, Women’s Day, and embassy receptions. These activities allow me to celebrate my heritage while sharing my art.

You also studied fashion design. How do you balance this passion with music?

After studying fashion design for five years, I opened my own shop in Istanbul,

In the US, I have used my design skills in creative ways, from decorating events to planning birthday parties. Recently, I launched a business to formalize these efforts. Although Washington is not ideal for high-fashion couture, I hope to expand my creative ventures in the future.

What kind of music resonates with you most?

I adore Turkish artists like Ferdi Özbeğen and Sezen Aksu, and international icons such as Tanita Tikaram, Sinéad O’Connor, and Julio Iglesias. Western classical music, which my father often played on Sundays, also holds a special place in my heart.

My mezzo-soprano voice allows me to explore diverse genres, and I am open to experimenting with Western classical and light music in the future.

What made you choose not to pursue a larger-scale professional music career?

The music industry is a demanding and often tumultuous field. As a mother, my priority is raising my son and maintaining a balanced family life. While I value my musical journey, I prefer a modest path that brings me joy and fulfillment without compromising my family’s happiness.

Could you describe your daily routine?

My mornings start at 7:00 am, preparing breakfast for my son before school. After walking our dog, I dedicate time to the gym and social

Stunning Appearance

What makes the Ankara Cat stand out is its captivating appearance. These cats often have a silky, pure-white coat that is soft to the touch and shimmers in the light. A Spirited and Loving Companion

Beyond their looks, Ankara Cats are known for their lively and affectionate personalities. They are intelligent, curious, and enjoy interacting with their human families. Whether it is playing fetch, learning tricks, or following you from room to room, these cats thrive on companionship and attention.

Ankara Cats are also highly adaptable, making them a great fit for different living situations. Their love for human interaction means they form strong bonds and are often described as loyal and intuitive companions.

Protected National Treasure

The Ankara Cat is more than just a beloved pet—it is a protected national treasure in Türkiye. The Ankara Zoo has played a significant role in preserving the purebred lineage of these cats, ensuring their survival for generations to come.

Efforts to protect the breed began in the 20th century when concerns arose about their declining numbers due to crossbreeding. Today, the zoo continues to oversee breeding programs to maintain the purity and authenticity of this historic feline. These efforts are a testament to the cultural importance of the Ankara Cat in Turkish society.

Myth and Legend

In Turkish folklore, the Ankara Cat is often associated with good fortune and spiritual significance. It is said that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern Türkiye, had a deep admiration for these cats. Legend has it that an Ankara Cat with odd-colored eyes is a sign of great luck, making them even more cherished in Turkish culture.

These stories have contributed to the Ankara Cat’s mystique, elevating it from a simple pet

to a cultural and mythical figure. The belief in their protective and lucky qualities continues to endear them to families who consider them more than just a feline friend.

Global Popularity

Today, the Ankara Cat is celebrated worldwide. While it is sometimes confused with the similar-looking Persian or Turkish Van, the Ankara Cat remains distinct in its elegance and charm. Enthusiasts across the globe continue to marvel at its beauty and unique personality.

In recent years, the breed has gained attention in international cat shows, further cementing its status as a global ambassador of Turkish culture. Breeders and cat lovers alike

have taken an active interest in preserving the Ankara Cat’s legacy, ensuring its place in the hearts of future generations.

A Living Piece of History

The Ankara Cat is not just a breed—it is a living piece of history, a testament to Türkiye’s rich cultural heritage. With its combination of beauty, intelligence, and historical significance, this cat has transcended time, remaining as captivating today as it was centuries ago.

If you ever have the chance to meet one, you will quickly understand why this enchanting feline has been cherished for generations. It is more than a pet—it is a piece of Turkish culture brought to life. ■

Exclusive Interview with DR OLCAY Y JONES

ADVANCING THE FRONTIERS OF REGENERATIVE MEDICINE

and the Future of Stem Cell Technology in Türkiye.

In the realm of cutting-edge medical advancements, stem cell technology stands out as a transformative field with the potential to redefine modern healthcare. Dr Olcay Y Jones, a prominent pediatric rheumatologist based in Bethesda, Maryland, brings a wealth of expertise to this revolutionary science. With a career spanning continents and groundbreaking contributions to stem cell research, Dr Jones has played a pivotal role in advancing personalized treatments for autoimmune and inflammatory diseases.

In this exclusive interview, Dr Jones shares insights into her collaboration with Türkiye’s GENKOK Center, the potential of stem cell therapies, and how Türkiye is positioning itself as a leader in regenerative medicine.

Could you share some information about yourself, including your family background, education, and professional experience?

I am a senior pediatric rheumatologist currently practicing in Bethesda, Maryland. I earned my medical degree from Hacettepe University in Ankara, Türkiye, and later pursued a PhD in Immunology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Following my postdoctoral research at Johns Hopkins University, I completed my pediatric residency at Arkansas Children’s Hospital and a Pediatric Rheumatology fellowship at the University of Chicago.

My career has included clinical and research roles at institutions such as All Children’s Hospital, University of South Florida, and Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, DC.

I have a deep interest in personalized treatments for children with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases. Additionally, I focus on combining in-person care with telemedicine to ensure accessibility for my patients.

Notably, I was involved in the first bone marrow transplant for a child with vasculitis in 2000 and have conducted significant preclinical studies on this treatment. Over the years, I have collaborated with national and international colleagues, authoring numerous publications in the field of stem cell technology.

Can you briefly describe stem cell technology and its groundbreaking applications in treating diseases?

Stem cells are the foundation of life, playing a crucial role in growth, healing, and regeneration. There are two main types of stem cells

in the human body: hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) in the bone marrow, which form blood and immune cells, and mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs), which regenerate and maintain organs, musculoskeletal systems, and soft tissues.

In autoimmune diseases, the balance between these stem cells is disrupted, leading the immune system to attack the body’s tissues. While current treatments reduce inflammation, MSCs hold the potential to harness the body’s natural regenerative power. MSCs not only modulate immune responses but also support tissue health and promote the formation of new blood vessels.

For over two decades, research has shown MSCs’ safety and effectiveness in treating autoimmune, degenerative, and neurological conditions, as well as cardiovascular diseases such as diabetes, Parkinson’s disease, and heart attacks. These cells also support joint and cartilage health and aid wound healing.

How did you become involved with the GENKOK Center at Erciyes University?

In 2018, I was invited to Erciyes University as a visiting scholar. During my time in Türkiye for family reasons, I had the privilege of visiting the GENKOK Center and meeting its dedicated scientists. Following the necessary approvals and disclosures, I continued as an international academic advisor on a volunteer basis.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, I contributed to two publications led by GENKOK scientists. One focused on a clinical trial utilizing serum-derived exosomes, while the other involved bench-top characterization of these exosomes. My role primarily involved data analysis and manuscript preparation, while my Turkish colleagues handled study design and execution. This collaboration is a testament to the innovative research emerging from Türkiye.

What types of stem cell therapies does the GENKOK Center provide to Turkish patients?

The GENKOK Center has treated over 700 patients with MSCs for conditions such as arthritis, severe wounds, jaw diseases, and

Türkiye has the resources, expertise, and cultural foundation to lead the region in regenerative medicine.

near-blindness. One of GENKOK’s strengths lies in its expertise in producing MSCs from diverse sources like bone marrow, adipose tissue, and umbilical cord—both from donors and the patients themselves.

All treatments at GENKOK are conducted under strict regulatory oversight, with approvals from the Turkish Ministry of Health and institutional ethics committees. This rigorous process mirrors the Institutional Review Board (IRB) standards in the US, ensuring patient safety and ethical compliance.

How can Türkiye become a regional leader in stem cell therapies?

Türkiye possesses the resources and cultural mindset necessary to lead the field of regenerative medicine. Centers like GENKOK, supported by a commitment to innovation, have the potential to spearhead advancements in stem cell therapies.

While this technology is still in its early stages, it has the transformative potential to reshape modern medicine. By fostering multidisciplinary collaboration and focusing on ethical practices, Türkiye can set a global benchmark for this groundbreaking field.

What are the plans for GENKOK to evolve into a world-class center for stem cell technology?

Achieving international recognition requires adherence to stringent regulatory standards, such as those set by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Currently, no MSC products have gained FDA approval. However, by systematically pursuing clinical trials and international collaborations, GENKOK can set itself on the path to becoming a global leader.

GENKOK can emulate the strategies of other international centers by combining

cutting-edge research with robust regulatory frameworks to achieve global credibility.

What are the financial needs for this ambitious project, and how is GENKOK currently funded?

EXPLORING TURKISH GASTRONOMY: A TIMELESS CULINARY TREASURE

Turkish cuisine is a harmonious blend of tradition, sustainability, and health—where every dish tells a story and every ingredient is cherished.

Turkish cuisine, deeply rooted in tradition and celebrated for its health-conscious and sustainable approach, offers a unique gastronomic experience that bridges the past and present. Known for its diverse flavors and innovative use of local produce, Turkish gastronomy is a treasure trove of culinary delights that has captivated food enthusiasts worldwide. This article delves into the essential aspects of Turkish cuisine, from its rich traditions and healthy ingredients to its hallmark dishes and beverages.

A Legacy of Tradition

At the heart of Turkish cuisine lies its reverence for tradition. Recipes are handed down through generations, from grandmothers to grandchildren, preserving the authentic flavors of centuries past. Traditional cooking methods ensure that the dishes retain their original essence, offering a taste of history with every bite. Whether it is a slow-cooked stew or a meticulously prepared dessert, Turkish food is a testament to the timeless art of culinary craftsmanship.

Cooking in Türkiye is not merely about sustenance; it is an act of cultural preservation.

Each dish carries the stories of the people who created it and reflects the regional diversity of a country that spans Europe and Asia. The result is a cuisine that seamlessly blends influences from Anatolia, the Balkans, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

Commitment to Sustainability

Turkish gastronomy is also renowned for its zero-waste philosophy. Every ingredient is used to its fullest potential in a typical Turkish kitchen. Vegetable scraps are transformed into broths, citrus peels enhance desserts, and leftover rice enriches soups. Seasonal fruits

and vegetables are preserved through drying or freezing, ensuring their availability throughout the year.

This commitment to sustainability not only minimizes waste but also emphasizes the importance of resourcefulness. Turkish cooking exemplifies how traditional methods can align with modern environmental concerns, making it a model of sustainable culinary practices.

Health at the Forefront

Health-conscious cooking is another hallmark of Turkish cuisine. Dishes are often prepared using locally sourced, sun-kissed produce and organic ingredients. Olive oil, a staple in Turkish cooking, is prized for its health benefits and is used generously in meze (appetizers), stews, and vegetable dishes.

Cooking techniques such as steaming, boiling, and baking are preferred to retain the ingredients' natural nutrients, flavors, and textures. The result is a cuisine that nourishes the body, mind, and spirit. Many Turkish dishes are inherently vegetarian-friendly; even meat-based recipes emphasize balance and moderation.

Signature Dishes and Experiences

Turkish cuisine is a feast for the senses, offering diverse dishes that cater to every palate. Here are some highlights:

The Quintessential Turkish Breakfast

Turkish breakfast is an elaborate affair featuring an array of small dishes. Cheese, olives, jams, honey, clotted cream, fresh bread, and eggs prepared in various styles are staples. Unlimited cups of freshly brewed Turkish tea complete this hearty and leisurely meal.

Esnaf Lokantası: The Soul of Local Dining

For an authentic experience, visit an esnaf lokantası (tradesmen’s restaurant). These establishments serve home-style dishes at affordable prices, offering a buffet-style selection of soups, stews, and vegetable-based entrees. Bread is often complimentary, and tipping, though not mandatory, is appreciated.

GASTRONOMY SPOTLIGHT

Seafood Specialties

Surrounded by three seas, Türkiye is rich in seafood. Hamsi (anchovies) and lüfer (bluefish) are particularly beloved. Whether grilled, baked, or fried, these fish are a cornerstone of Turkish coastal cuisine. The autumn fishing season brings excitement, with fishing enthusiasts lining the Bosphorus for their catch of the day.

Olive Oil Dishes

Known as zeytinyağlı yemekler, these vegetarian-friendly dishes highlight the versatility of olive oil. Artichokes, beans, and eggplants are often simmered in olive oil and served cold, offering a light yet flavorful option for any meal.

Beloved Beverages

Turkish meals are always accompanied by beverages, from the refreshing ayran (a yogurtbased drink) to the warm, cinnamon-spiced sahlep, enjoyed on winter evenings. Turkish coffee, recognized by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, is a drink and a ritual, complete with fortune-telling from the coffee grounds.

Desserts That Delight

Turkish desserts are as varied as the main courses, ranging from syrup-soaked pastries to creamy milk-based treats:

◗ Baklava: Layers of flaky phyllo dough, nuts, and syrup come together in this iconic dessert, which has earned geographical indication status.

◗ Milky Desserts: Low in calories but rich in flavor, options like sütlaç (rice pudding) and kazandibi (caramelized milk pudding) are favorites.

◗ Turkish Delight (Lokum): These chewy, sugar-dusted candies, flavored with rosewater, lemon, or pistachio, perfectly accompany Turkish coffee.

Street Food and Snacks

Turkish street food culture is vibrant and accessible. Simit, a sesame-crusted bread ring, is a breakfast staple, while pide (flatbread with various toppings) and börek (savory pastries) are popular throughout the day. Tarhana soup, made from fermented and dried vegetables, is a quick and nutritious option enjoyed nationwide.

Celebrating Turkish Cuisine

Each May, Turkish Cuisine Week showcases the richness of Turkish gastronomy. This global celebration features cooking workshops, chef talks, and tastings that highlight the diversity of Türkiye’s culinary heritage. It is an opportunity to explore both traditional recipes and modern interpretations.

The Future of Turkish Gastronomy

As the global culinary scene evolves, Turkish cuisine continues to gain recognition for its balance of tradition and innovation. Its emphasis on health, sustainability, and cultural authenticity positions it as a leading example of mindful cooking. Whether through a hearty esnaf lokantası meal, a luxurious seafood platter, or a humble cup of Turkish tea, the flavors of Türkiye invite the world to connect with its rich heritage.

Discovering the Magic of Turkish Cuisine

From its deep-rooted traditions to its forward-thinking sustainability practices, Turkish gastronomy celebrates life, history, and culture. Whether savoring a home-cooked meal, indulging in street food, or participating in a Turkish culinary event, the journey through Türkiye’s flavors is one of endless discovery and delight. ■

EMPOWERING US INDUSTRIES WITH EXPERT PROFESSIONALS: H-1B VISA

The H-1B visa is more than a pathway to employment—it is a strategic tool that injects vitality into the American workforce, drives innovation, and sustains the US as a global economic leader.

The H-1B visa stands as a testament to the US's recognition of the immense value that skilled professionals from around the globe bring to its industries. In my experience as an immigration attorney, I have facilitated the arrival of countless experts who contribute significantly to sectors in critical need of their skills. These talented individuals drive innovation, fill essential skill gaps, and help maintain the United States' status as a leader in the global economy. The H-1B visa program is not merely a pathway to employment; it is a strategic tool that injects vitality into the American workforce and stimulates economic development.

Who Can Apply: Ideal Sectors and Professions

The H-1B visa is designed for professionals in "specialty occupations"—roles that require a high degree of specialized knowledge typically supported by a bachelor’s degree or higher. Information technology, engineering, finance, healthcare, and education are prime sectors where H-1B visa holders thrive. These professionals, from software developers to financial analysts and educators, bring a wealth of knowledge and innovation to the US.

In the tech industry, for instance, the rapid pace of advancement creates a demand for immigrant professionals ready to fill critical positions. H-1B visa holders drive technological innovation and support sector growth.

Similarly, in healthcare, specialized physicians and researchers come to the US to offer their expertise in fields that lack qualified professionals, contributing significantly to medical advancements and patient care.

Navigating the H-1B Cap: Strategies for Success

The H-1B visa program is capped at 85,000 visas annually, with 20,000 reserved for applicants holding a master’s degree or higher from US institutions. This cap is often met quickly, requiring employers and prospective employees to be strategic in their application timing and preparation. Applying as soon as the application period opens and considering premium processing can significantly improve

the chances of selection in the lottery system. For those not selected, alternative strategies include exploring other visa categories or extending their stay on student visas through Optional Practical Training (OPT), if applicable. My role is to provide strategic advice to maximize the chances of a successful H-1B application while exploring all potential avenues for employment authorization in the US.

The Application Process: Pathway to Permanent Residency

The H-1B visa application process is multifaceted, beginning with an employer filing a Labor Condition Application (LCA) with the Department of Labor, followed by the Form I-129 petition to the USCIS. The lottery system determines which petitions will be processed based on the annual cap.

Once granted, the H-1B visa allows for an initial stay of three years, extendable to six, with further extensions available under certain circumstances. It also opens pathways to permanent residency; H-1B holders can transition to a Green Card through employer sponsorship, typically via the EB-1 or EB-2 categories.

The journey from H-1B to permanent residency is complex, contingent on various factors, including nationality, employment category, and the annual Green Card limits. I guide clients through this intricate process, ensuring they understand each step and have the best chance of achieving their goals.

Economic Impact of H-1B Visa Holders

H-1B visa holders make substantial contributions to the US economy. They often occupy high-paying jobs, spur consumer spending, and increase tax revenue. Their specialized skills lead to innovation, driving the development of new products and services that stimulate business growth and productivity. Furthermore, they frequently fill roles in research and development, resulting in technological advancements that energize entire industries and create new jobs for American workers.

The presence of these professionals also attracts investment and encourages domestic students to pursue careers in STEM fields, fostering a pipeline of homegrown talent. The cycle of growth and innovation begins with the expertise of H-1B visa holders, rippling through

the economy and benefiting businesses and consumers alike.

Fostering Innovation and Economic Growth

H-1B visa holders play a pivotal role in fostering innovation within the US. Their expertise in cutting-edge fields leads to new patents, startups, and technological advancements that keep America at the forefront of global innovation, particularly in sectors like renewable energy, AI, and biomedicine.

Research shows that H-1B workers complement the US workforce, increasing wages and job opportunities for American employees. By facilitating the entry of global talent, the H-1B visa program enriches individual businesses and contributes to a broader economic narrative that nurtures progress and prosperity.

Challenges and Opportunities in the H-1B Landscape

While the H-1B visa program is essential for US businesses, it is challenging. The annual cap and lottery system introduces unpredictability, and recent policy changes have added complexity to application and renewal processes. Navigating these challenges requires a deep understanding of the regulatory landscape.

Despite these hurdles, the H-1B visa remains a vital conduit for businesses to access a global pool of expert professionals. As an immigration attorney, I work closely with companies and candidates to navigate the H-1B process, ensuring compliance with legal requirements and optimizing the chances of a successful outcome.

Benefits for Companies: Harnessing Global Expertise

US companies stand to gain immensely from the influx of skilled professionals through the H-1B visa program. These individuals bring innovative ideas, global perspectives, and specialized knowledge that can lead to industry-altering solutions and services. Their presence often encourages domestic employees to advance their skills, fostering a culture of continuous professional development and knowledge sharing.

For businesses, sponsoring H-1B visas is an investment in workforce diversity and global

competitiveness. These professionals help bridge cultural gaps in an international marketplace, providing valuable insights into emerging trends and technologies. Companies that sponsor H-1B visas enhance their reputation and appeal as employers for top global talent.

The H-1B visa program serves as a crucial bridge through which a wealth of international talent enters the US, bringing their expertise and potential to drive significant economic and innovative growth. As an immigration attorney, I am committed to helping companies and individuals navigate the complexities of the H-1B process, ensuring that the US continues to benefit from the diverse skills and fresh perspectives these professionals offer. Together, we can solidify America’s position as a leader in industry and innovation. ■

GIFTS THAT MATTER: INTENTIONAL AND MEANINGFUL GIFT CHOICES FOR THE HOLIDAYS

The best gifts do not come from a store; they come from the heart. Let us rethink holiday traditions to focus on connection, sustainability, and the true spirit of giving.

The holiday season often brings the tradition of gift-giving to the forefront of our lives. While this practice can foster joy, connection, and a sense of generosity, it is worth pausing to reflect on the real cost—both financial and emotional—of this cultural norm.

Gift-giving during holidays is highly commercialized, pressuring individuals to spend

excessively in the name of tradition. This cultural expectation can lead to financial strain and feelings of inadequacy. The heart of giftgiving should be about thoughtfulness and connection, not about meeting societal standards or impressing others. By focusing on the emotional value of a gift rather than its monetary cost, we can reclaim the true spirit of the holidays.

So, let us reflect before we buy our gifts: What are we giving, and why? What impact

does it have on us, our loved ones, and even the planet? As someone working with children and families with a lifelong holistic development and wellness in mind, I encourage rethinking our approach to gift-giving by considering sustainability, intentionality, and the emotional value of the gifts we choose.

Sustainability: No Junk, Please

In a consumer-driven world, the holidays can quickly turn into an avalanche of unnecessary

and wasteful purchases. Cheap, plastic trinkets or trendy gadgets may bring momentary excitement but often end up in landfills by the next year. Sustainable gift-giving means choosing items that are durable, practical, and environmentally friendly—or skipping "things" altogether. Opt for gifts that reduce waste, such as reusable items, handmade crafts, or even zero-waste kits. By prioritizing quality over quantity, we align our gifting with values of responsibility and care for the planet.

Children: When “Enough” Becomes “Too Much”

In many households, children already have everything they need—and often far more. The latest toys, gadgets, and clothing can pile up to the point where children become overwhelmed or take abundance for granted. Instead of adding more material goods to their lives, consider gifts that foster creativity, learning, or bonding, such as books, art supplies, or family experiences. The goal is to nurture their emotional and intellectual development, not just fulfill fleeting desires.

Experiences as Gifts: The Joy That Lasts

Psychological research has consistently shown that experiences, rather than material possessions, lead to greater and more lasting happiness. Experiences create memories, deepen relationships, and offer a sense of fulfillment that objects rarely provide. Tickets to a concert, a family day at a museum, or even a subscription to a nature program can provide joy that outlives any toy or gadget.

Treatments and Self-Development Opportunities

For adults, gifts that focus on self-care and personal growth can be profoundly meaningful. A massage, a cooking class, a series of coaching sessions, or even a yoga retreat offers a chance to invest in oneself. These types of gifts signal that you value the recipient’s well-being and personal aspirations, offering something far more valuable than a new sweater or a kitchen gadget.

Wishlists: A Simple Solution

If you are unsure what to give, asking for a wishlist can simplify the process. Choosing an

item from a wishlist ensures the gift is both needed and wanted. This approach eliminates guesswork, reduces waste, and allows the recipient to receive something they will genuinely appreciate.

Handmade Gifts: A Labor of Love

There is something uniquely special about handmade gifts. Whether it is a knitted scarf, homemade cookies, or a hand-painted card, these gifts carry a personal touch that no storebought item can replicate. The time and effort invested in creating something by hand show the recipient just how much they mean to you. Handmade gifts also promote creativity and offer an antidote to the hyper-commercialization of the season.

Rethink the Tradition

The real cost of gift-giving is not just about

money—it is about time, energy, and emotional significance. By being more intentional with our choices, we can make the holiday season less about accumulating “stuff” and more about meaningful connections, lasting memories, and sustainable practices. The best gifts do not come from a store; they come from the heart. ■

WHAT INSPIRES ME

ISTANBUL TO NEW YORK IN 30 MINUTES:

SPACEX’S STARSHIP REVOLUTIONIZES TRAVEL

With Starship, destinations like Istanbul and New York could be just 30 minutes apart, transforming global travel as we know it.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX is poised to redefine global travel with its revolutionary Starship rocket. Designed for space exploration, Starship now aims to connect major cities on Earth in under an hour. Imagine flying from Istanbul to New York in just 30 minutes or reaching any global destination in record time.

High-Speed Innovation

Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, achieves speeds of 27,000 km/h (Mach 25)—25 times faster than commercial airplanes. This could drastically reduce travel times:

◗ London to New York: 29 minutes

◗ Tokyo to Delhi: 30 minutes

◗ Sydney to New York: 49 minutes

Sea-based platforms would serve as launch sites, ensuring safe and quiet operations far from populated areas.

The Experience

Passengers can expect a high-speed, roller coasterlike journey, with restraint systems ensuring safety during the ascent and descent. Most flights would last 15–20 minutes, offering a futuristic travel experience that shrinks the globe.

Challenges and Considerations

Despite its promise, Starship faces key challenges: 1. Regulatory Hurdles: Navigating complex international frameworks and securing approvals, like from the Federal Aviation Administration is critical.

2. Safety and Comfort: Ensuring smooth, safe travel at Mach 25 is vital, especially for passengers unaccustomed to intense g-forces.

3. Affordability: Initial costs may limit accessibility, but advancements could make Starship travel more affordable over time.

The Future of Travel

With Starship, SpaceX envisions a future where Istanbul, New York, and other major cities are just minutes apart. This innovation could revolutionize global tourism, business, and cultural exchange, all while potentially reducing aviation emissions.

From quick meetings in London to vacations in Tokyo, SpaceX’s Starship could soon turn these possibilities into a daily reality. ■

EAT LIKE A TURK

NOHUT ODA BAKLA SOFA

A healthy and tasty battle of legumes in your kitchen is a win win during the cold days of winter and it is easy to prepare and enjoy.

The Turkish expression of “Nohut Oda Bakla Sofa,” chickpea room broad bean hallway, could be a put down for the tiny homes of newlyweds in the old times. However, how can you deny the role of these humble ingredients in the Turkish kitchen before the arrival of New World ingredients of beans, potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers?

The earliest archaeobotanical evidence finds chickpeas at the early settlement excavations in modern Syria of the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period.

Cicer reticulatum, the wild progenitor of domestic chickpeas, grows only in southeast Türkiye at Pre-Pottery Neolithic sites at Çayönü and Hacilar, spreading to the Mediterranean region around 6000 BC.

The family name of the famous Roman orator and statesman Cicero comes from “cicer,” which means chickpea, an everyday staple of peasants and the poor. This botanical association can stem from a family business or a facial wart of an ancestor.

A regional use unique to the Balkans and Türkiye is the roasted chickpea "leblebi," and sugar-coated varieties enjoyed everywhere. The fermented millet pulse called "boza" is a traditional winter drink with cinnamon and leblebi.

Chickpeas add a delicious accompaniment to pilaf, and as a step-up dish, chickpeas with meat warm most Turkish homes as a meal in the winter months. Cooking it is easier than it seems.

CHICKPEAS WITH MEAT

Before you begin, follow these tips to succeed with this recipe.

Soak chickpeas in cold water the night before. Optionally, add one teaspoon of black pepper and baking soda to soften the outer membranes to make them cook faster. Cook them in the morning to develop the essence and consistency of serving dinner in the evening.

INGREDIENTS

◗ One pound of coarsely chopped lamb meat. (Alternately, you can also use lean minced meat.)

◗ Adding 1-2 marrow bones to cooking will make them even more delicious.

◗ 1.5 cups of boiled chickpeas to your taste of doneness.

◗ One onion

◗ Three tablespoons of oil

◗ Two tablespoons of tomato paste

◗ Salt to taste

◗ Chili pepper to taste

PREPARATION

◗ Boil chickpeas.

◗ Cut meat into cubes and braise in oil until it softens.

◗ Separately chop the onions finely and fry in oil until they turn pink.

◗ Add the tomato paste, salt, chili pepper and fry for 2 more minutes.

◗ Add the boiled meat and boiled chickpeas. Gently mix to blend.

◗ Add about six cups of water until it covers them. If you are cooking in a regular pot, use cold water, and for the pressure cooker, use hot water.

◗ Cook for about 10-15 minutes.

◗ Serve and enjoy. A side of white rice dish prepared with butter is not such a bad idea and is necessary in a Turkish home.

A BALKAN CONNECTION

A light dessert like zerde can complement many winter dishes.

The recent book published by Murat Bardakçı named Makbule after the sister of the founder of the republic, includes anecdotes about Atatürk's illness around the days he passed away. Makbule Hanım also describes when Gazi asked for zerde dessert during his illness, with the words from Makbule. "He asked me for white zerde.... Sister, you know my mother's

EAT LIKE A TURK

zerde. Make me Selanik zerde. I want it."

Interestingly, this desert is like the zerde prepared in Konya.

A sizable part of the Balkan immigrants and Mustafa Kemal's mother, Zubeyde Hanim’s side claim connection to the Karamanli principality near today’s Konya.

The Ottomans were following in the footsteps of the Seljuks, who also exiled these heterodox Turkmen masses who did not obey authority toward Western Anatolia. Seeing a threat to themselves, Ottomans also dispersed the nomadic Turkmen throughout the newly conquered Balkans, mainly to populate areas near Albania.

INGREDIENTS

◗ Half a cup of rice (preferably Turkish Baldo type)

◗ 6 cups of water

◗ 1 cup of sugar

◗ 1/3 teacup of rose water

◗ Half a tablespoon of cornstarch

◗ Half a packet of vanilla

◗ 1 tablespoon of lemon zest

PREPARATION

◗ Wash the rice and soak it for 15 minutes.

◗ Drain and add 6 cups of water and boil it until it becomes very soft.

◗ Add 1 cup of sugar and boil it for another 5-10 minutes.

◗ Add the lemon zest, vanilla and half a spoon of starch by mashing it with a little water.

◗ Continue to boil for another 10 minutes and the zerde will thicken.

◗ Add the optional rose water and boil it a little more. Cool to set.

◗ Decorate with shaved almonds, crushed pistachios, sliced strawberries, and diced figs before serving.

◗ Normally, they do not add anything for decorating when served at weddings in Konya. Enjoy.

THERE IS A FAVA BEAN IN YOUR FORTUNE

Itinerant fortune tellers carry fava-broad beans among the mysterious small objects they use to throw on the ground to map your destiny freely.

Fava beans carried to the Americas by Spaniards had limited success against the wellestablished varieties of local haricot beans. Today, broad beans are mainly used by migrants from the Middle East and Mediterranean.

This versatile legume can be consumed raw, boiled, steamed, stewed, mashed, sautéed, fried, or roasted. In Türkiye, broad beans are called bakla. This is also the name of a zeytinyağlı dish made by simmering young and tender broad bean pods with chopped onions in olive oil. It is traditionally garnished with dill and served cool, together with the yogurt. Sometimes it is also cooked with artichoke (enginarlı iç bakla), which is another olive oil based zeytinyağlı cold dish. Another dish is fava, a meze prepared by pureeing beans with olive oil.

Here is the effortless way to make it.

FAVA

INGREDIENTS

◗ 2 cups blanched and peeled broad beans

◗ 4 cups hot water

◗ 1 large onion

◗ 4 tablespoons olive oil

◗ juice of half lemon

◗ 1 teaspoon salt

◗ 1 teaspoon sugar

PREPARATION

◗ Cut the onions into fine cubes and fry in olive oil until they turn pink.

◗ Add the washed and drained broad beans and 3 cups of hot water.

◗ Add sugar and lemon juice. Cook at medium heat until the broad beans soften, stirring.

◗ Add one cup of hot water gradually, ensuring the broad beans are fully absorbed.

◗ Blend in a blender to make a puree, and pour your fava into a wet glass mold of your choice.

◗ Rest for at least 2 hours in a fridge. Slice and drizzle olive oil on it. If you like a touch of aromatic flavors, you can add boiled and cubed root celery or finely sliced celery stalks,

◗ Decorate with dill and serve. Enjoy!

AMERICAN DIPLOMATS TO MUSTAFA KEMAL’S ANGORA

Turkish-American relations, severed in 1917, were rebuilt through diplomacy and trade, with figures like Joseph Grew and Charles Sherrill shaping a new era of partnership.

PART 1

Joseph Grew

(October 12, 1927 – March 13, 1932)

Charles Hitchcock Sherrill

(May 20, 1932 – March 23, 1933)

Turkish-American relations were severed in the spring of 1917. America declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917. The Ottoman Empire sent a note to America on April 20, 1917, severing relations with that state without declaring war. The US did not declare war on Türkiye either. Sweden would protect American rights

in Türkiye, and Turkish rights in the US were given to Spain.

With the 1923 Lausanne Peace Treaty, the new republic, by the beginning of 1925, was appointing ambassadors to London, Paris, Rome, and Athens. The first Ambassador of the United States to the Republic of Türkiye, Joseph Grew, would arrive in Ankara in September 1927. The Turkish Ambassador, Ahmet Muhtar Bey, would come to America at the end of November of the same year and presented his letter of credence at the beginning of December.

All was not quiet in the interim, and it was covered in previous "It Happened Here" articles, such as low-level naval military events, visits by special commissions or individuals

such as the King-Crane Commission in the summer of 1919, the General Harbord Commission mission to Eastern Anatolia in the autumn of the same year, American journalists, businessmen, missionaries, and representatives of the Near East Relief Organization, who were active in Türkiye. Admiral Bristol sent Julian Gillespie (1893–1939),1 the assistant American trade attaché in Istanbul, to Ankara as the High Commissioner's representative.

“The Nationalist Movement, headed by Mustafa Kemal Pasha, launched a counteroffensive against Allied occupation in the remains of the now-defunct Ottoman Empire. From 1921 onward the movement gained military and diplomatic accomplishments,

fortifying its case and position in Anatolia. As a result, the American commercial attaché Julian Gillespie was dispatched to Ankara in December 1921 to talk with the new government's leaders. This contact became the first official communication between the United States and the emerging leadership in postOttoman Anatolia.

The content of these meetings primarily consisted of commercial interviews, and Gillespie’s report described potential business opportunities “(Özkan, 2016, pp. 340-341). 2

“After Gillespie returned after staying in Ankara for about a month and a half, America decided to send a Foreign Affairs officer named Robert W. Imbrie to Ankara as a representative… The Ankara Government did not accept this either because Admiral Bristol was on duty at the Istanbul Government. The acceptance of an American in Ankara as his representative could be interpreted as the Ankara Government being subordinate to the Istanbul Government.” 3

Joseph Grew Era

American diplomat Joseph Clark Grew (1880–1965) held posts at US embassies and later became Under Secretary of State and supervised the establishment of the Foreign Service.

Grew’s first diplomatic contact as the American delegate with Türkiye began at the Lausanne conference, where Türkiye and the US signed a treaty of commerce and amity on August 6, 1923. This treaty also provided assurances for Americans' cultural and religious rights in Türkiye. Again, the treaty decided that countries should cooperate to extradite criminals (iade-i mucrimin). Grew signed this treaty on behalf of the US, İsmet Pasha, Hasan Hüsnü Saka, and Rıza Nur on behalf of Türkiye. He was appointed as US Ambassador to Türkiye in 1927 based on his expertise in Turkish American relations.

The issue of American schools in Türkiye became a crisis in Turkish-American relations during his time in Ankara. A small institution, the Bursa American Girls' School operated since1876, became a hot topic in the Turkish press in 1928 when newspapers reported that religious propaganda was being conducted

at the school and that some students were becoming Christians under the influence of their teachers. After this incident, the school was closed.

There is an interesting documentary filmed from this era when Atatürk received the US Ambassador position at the Forest Farm in 1930. The event was filmed with a silent camera by Fox. The two surviving archival versions of this film show how Atatürk used film to communicate his and Türkiye’s new image to the American public. 4

The sound recording was done separately. At Mustafa Kemal’s insight and insistence that one day it will be dubbed with the onsite recording when technically possible, it was filmed to look like a sound film with speeches, and it is now available as such.5

by researcher and writer Rıfat N Bali, we learn about Atatürk’s view of Islam, which has always been the subject of speculation, from his own words, through a never-beforepublished document: American Ambassador General Charles H. Sherrill (1867-1936), who wrote a biography about Atatürk,7 conducted long interviews with him, but did not include some of his words in the book. He expressed this with the lines, “It would not be right to include everything he said about his personal views on religion here.” However, Sherrill did not forget that a diplomat and historian is responsible for history and included the “objectionable section” in detail in the report he sent to the US State Department, thus attributing it to history.

In his book, he writes, “A race that produces great men is great. There is no better way and method to understand a nation than to examine its leader. The Turks have rarely

produced a great and meritorious man like Mustafa Kemal, a superior statesperson today. Therefore, the best way to examine Türkiye and the Turks is to start with the political people who govern the country and to examine the savior, pioneer, national hero, and international statesman, the president.”

It was General Charles Sherrill who, as a former US Ambassador to Ankara, noted after Kemal Atatürk's passing on November 10, 1938, “It should not be forgotten that

Kemal showed brilliant strategic ability at Dumlupınar and was able to make the most of the Turkish forces that were far fewer than the enemy…Rarely have invading armies in the world faced such a defeat as the great defeat suffered by the Greeks… He won Lausanne; the first victory that old Asia has given to Europe in the last two hundred years.” ■

TÜRKİYE İŞ BANKASI MUSEUM

THE HISTORY OF A BANK THAT IS ALMOST THE SAME AGE AS THE REPUBLIC ALSO SHEDS LIGHT ON THE ECONOMIC HISTORY OF TÜRKIYE

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk stated in 1924, shortly after the declaration of the republic: "Paramount among measures that will liberate and augment the nation is the establishment of a bank, utterly modern and national in identity, born directly out of the people's respect and confidence...".

AHistoric Mission: In the newly established Republic, there was a deeply rooted sentiment signaling the need for a indeed national establishment and the birth of a banking system that was capable of the financing means to back up economic activities, manage funds, and, where necessary, extend resources that could trigger industrial impetus. The birth of a new country depended heavily on the presence of banking activities nationwide, the drive for industrial development, animating national savings, financing fundamental economic breakthroughs, and the means to meet financial borrowings. Türkiye was in great economic difficulties and suffered from a shortage of qualified and talented human resources in banking. İş Bankası began operating at a time of such economic strain.

Brand Finance, the world's leading international brand valuation and strategy consultancy organization, announced its "Banking 500" report for 2024, which ranks the most valuable brands in the banking sector. Celebrating its 100th anniversary, Türkiye İş Bankası ranked first among Turkish banks with the highest brand value. In the evaluations conducted based on publicly available financial data, İş Bankası ranked first among banks in Türkiye in the evaluation made according to criteria like brand power reflecting characteristics such as financial performance, sustainability, emotional bond

established with the consumer, and estimated brand revenues. İş Bankası General Manager Hakan Aran, in his evaluation on the subject, said, "In our 100th year, I find it very valuable to be ranked first in such a ranking that goes beyond financial results and takes as its basis the reputation and brand value in the eyes of all stakeholders.

It is a source of pride for us to be ranked first in this list, which once again confirms that trust and innovation, the two most important foundations of a strong banking brand, are among the strongest aspects of our Bank, which acts with the vision of being the bank of the future. and a means of happiness."

Türkiye İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları / İş Bankası Publishing Company

Türkiye İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları was founded by Hasan Âli Yücel in 1956. Hasan Âli Yücel (1897–1961) was a Turkish education reformer and philosophy teacher who also had served as minister of education of Türkiye. He is remembered among many other contributions for the foundation of Köy Enstitüleri (Village Institutes).

Hasan Âli Yücel combined the speed and experience he gained from his work to translate the “world classics” into Turkish and make them widely read with the power he gained from Türkiye İş Bankası, thus establishing one of the important and deep-rooted publishing houses of Türkiye.

The first book published was Zabit ve Komutan ile Hasbihal (A Conversation with the Officer and the Commander) which is the book written by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk about his views on the Ottoman army and military service. This was followed by books that would form a

comprehensive Atatürk library. With the publication of studies examining our history, social structure, and ethnographic and geographical characteristics, the publishing house became indispensable, primarily for researchers and gradually for all intellectuals. Today, Türkiye İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları has a strong portfolio with the books he published in the Classics Series, Modern Classics Series, Children and Youth, and Research and Review categories. The publishing house continues to add the books of deep-rooted writers of Turkish and World Literature to the literary world.

Following a comprehensive renovation, the Turkish İş Bank Museum reopened its doors to visitors with the permanent exhibition: “100 Years of İş Bankası.” The museum tells the story of İş Bank’s century-long history, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary, with documents, photographs, films and collection pieces.

The Türkiye İş Bankası Museum, has been providing service in its historical building in Eminönü since 2007, which has hosted around 2,600,000 visitors since its opening and hosted over 135,000 students in its qualified workshops and events free of charge. The museum has been continuing renovation works for a while to meet its guests with a much more modern appearance and an enriched exhibition layout on the August 24, 2024.

They went into the renovation process considering the building had been somewhat worn out over time, considering that new developments in exhibition techniques have emerged, and the growth of the archive with new photographs and documents. As the bank was entering their 100th year, they also felt the need to tell their story better. They wanted to tell the story of İş Bankası’s establishment, development, technology and transformation into today’s modern bank, and its contribution to society, with a brand-new technique. There are also photographs seen for the first time in this exhibition. Some never-before-seen photographs of the İzmir Economic Congress are among them.

The curator of the renewed Türkiye İş Bankası Museum was Associate Professor Dr Y Doğan Çetinkaya, who is also the author of the book titled Intelligence, Attention and Chastity - 100 Years of İş, and the exhibition design was done by Pattu Architecture.

The new exhibition layout, which spreads over two floors of the building, focuses on the foundation and development years of İş Bankası on the ground floor. In a way, the corporate history of Iş Bankası reflects the

history of the foundation and development of Türkiye as well. In eight successive halls the visitors can get an idea of the history of Iş Bankası, which is as old as the Republic of Türkiye, in chronological order. There are 4 main sections on the ground floor: The establishment story of İş Bankası accompanied by early period documents in the “İktisadi Bağımsızlığın Bankası (Bank of Economic Independence)” section; how the bank trained and transformed the limited human capital in its early years in “İş Bankacısı (The bankers of İş);" how the savings campaigns accelerated by the piggy bank revealed the savings that would form the basis for investments and the spread of the branch network in Anatolia in “Büyüme, Sermaye, Tasarruf (Growth, Capital, Savings);" and the leading role İş Bankası assumed in industrial development, especially in the early years of the Republic, and the details of the numerous factories and enterprises it established to operate in a wide range of sectors from coal to sugar and insurance to glass are presented to the attention of visitors in the “İştiraklerin Bankası (Bank of Subsidiaries)." On the upper floor of the museum, emphasis is placed on technological transformation, today’s banking and corporate social responsibility projects. Technological transformation and developing digital service delivery that can be experienced both in banking and in daily

life can be observed on this floor through collection pieces such as typewriters, calculators, and first computers used in printing and calculations. İş Bankası’s activities carried out in line with its principles such as sustainability and gender equality, programs that create an entrepreneurial ecosystem, the Bank’s corporate social responsibility projects, education, environment, sports and culture-art activites, and past advertisements are also located on the upper floor.

The Main Cash Safe and Safe Deposit Box section, which have been integral parts of the building since 1928, and the Atatürk Hall, whose decoration was renewed by taking inspiration from original photographs, are also expected to attract significant interest from visitors as in previous years. The Türkiye İş Bankası Museum can be visited free of charge every day between 10:00-18:00 except Mondays. ■

MUSEUM BUILDING

The historical building of Türkiye İş Bankası Museum, was built by architect Yovan Kastoryadis and opened on September 23, 1892, as the Istanbul Post Office. With the opening of the currently operating Grand Post Office in Sirkeci in 1909, the Yenicami building continued its activities as a package post office. In 1923, the ownership of the building was transferred to “İtibar-ı Milli Bankası." In 1927, when this bank joined Türkiye İş Bankası, the building was also transferred to İş Bankası. Following the merger, the Istanbul branches of the two banks began to provide service as a single branch in the Yenicami building as of February 20, 1928. During this process, a new floor was added to the building, vaults were brought from abroad, and the Atatürk bust made by Kenan Yontunç was placed on the magnificent stairs of the building.

The building was one of the most important branches of İş Bankası and was called Yenicami Branch and served as a branch until 2004. In 2005, work began to convert the building into a museum. The original furniture and branch layout were preserved as they were, the main safe and safe deposit boxes in the basement were arranged to be opened for exhibition. İş Bankası Kültür Yayınları bookstore was also positioned on the ground floor.

BEING OTHER

Diversity may be a new word in our vocabulary, but we still have much work ahead to confront biases and embrace the power of inclusion.

Last month was busy for me and the tech community in the DMV area, as we organized two in-person events discussing significant issues across different industries. One of these events, however, was unique. It transcended industry verticals, geography, or business models, focusing instead on the human element: the concept of “being other.” For decades, people across the world have endured biases and exclusion, forming a culture where we often befriend, hire, and support those who look like ourselves. Diversity may be a new word in our vocabulary, but we have much work ahead to recognize and confront our biases. Today’s entrepreneurs, tackling pressing challenges and driving innovation, still encounter the same remnants of exclusion: being the “other.”

Entrepreneurs are inherently different. They take risks, challenge the status quo, and push boundaries—a journey that is never easy. Reflecting on the “being other” theme inspired me to get into this topic in this month’s issue.

I recently learned that diversity spans nine key pillars: age, gender, sexual orientation, race, religion, disability, nationality, class, and ethnicity. These factors shape biases and lead to discrimination within each. For instance, only five Fortune 500 CEOs are black, and metrics for Asians, women, and other groups fare similarly poorly. At Amazon, 26% of the workforce is black, but only 8% hold management roles. At Apple, Black employees comprise 9% of the workforce but just 3% of leadership. Research further shows that while 91% of S&P 500 companies have diversity and inclusion (D&I) programs, only 14% have set diversity targets for managerial roles.

In his book See, Solve, Scale, Danny Warshay argues that teams with members from diverse backgrounds contribute unique skills, bring fresh perspectives, and achieve groundbreaking solutions. Provided there is inclusivity, these teams often outperform others, innovating effectively because they

operate in an environment that fosters trust and encourages different viewpoints. When diverse team members feel empowered to share their unique experiences, the collective knowledge broadens, creating a powerful competitive advantage.

Hamdi Ulukaya, CEO of Chobani, urges companies facing labor shortages to hire refugees, noting, “You will have the most loyal and motivated workforce you have ever seen.” Refugees not only bring resilience but also fresh perspectives and cultural insights that drive innovation, disruption, and efficiency.

In the DMV region, we are fortunate to have both one of the nation’s highest levels of education and one of its most diverse populations. These assets allow us to succeed together if we can create a truly diverse and inclusive environment. Technology startups, in particular, need these different perspectives to spark innovation and stand out.

The Turkish-American community, while not categorized as underrepresented or disadvantaged, still faces the challenges associated with the nine diversity pillars. Though we may appear as part of the majority, our distinct experiences and cultural background mean we often do not feel fully included. This, however, is precisely why we should leverage our strengths and unique perspectives to enrich teams and thrive. The journey starts with supporting each other as a community—standing united and showcasing the incredible potential within the Turkish-American community. ■

DO WE HAVE FREE WILL OR NOT?

“Life is like a game of cards. The hand you are dealt is determinism; the way you play it is free will.”

Do you feel like you have total control over your decisions in your life? Or do you feel like life is an ocean and you are a boat floating in the middle of that ocean, swaying from one side to the other with the flow of waves and the wind? Or do you sometimes feel like one and then the other? The question of whether humans have absolute free will in their lives or not has been a heated debate in fields from philosophy to psychology to social psychology to neuroscience, and is a principal concern of all religions. Neuroscience claims that our decisions are made unconsciously by our brains, and thus free will is an illusion, and social psychology holds that there are so many powerful factors beyond our control that we are not aware of, so there is no room for free will in our decisions. Among philosophers, the determinists posit that all acts of the will have already been determined by preceding events or natural laws, so there is no free will. Of those who

reject predeterminism, many also reject free will, arguing that personal choices are random and not determined by an active free will. Yet despite all of these different explanations that deny or discount the importance of free will, science has not totally disproven the existence of free will in humans. In fact, there

is good evidence that, to a certain degree, we have free will in our lives.

Afred R. Mele, a professor of philosophy at Florida State University has done much research on the topic of free will. In one of his many books on the subject, Free: Why Science Has not Disproved Free Will (2014), he analyzes scientific studies of how believing in the existence of free will or not impacts our decisions in our lives. As people’s confidence in the existence of free will decreases, the incidence of their behaving badly increases. Mele cites a study in Vohs and Schooler (2008) where people who read articles written by scientists denying free will were more likely to cheat on assigned tasks after reading the articles. In another experiment in Baumeister et al. (2009), college students who did not believe in free will behaved more aggressively than students who did. This happens because, as your belief in the existence of free will decreases, your belief that behaving responsibly and accountably will have any effect on the results weakens. Consequently, you simply give up

control over your behavior. If you do not take responsibility for your decisions and behavior, you assume nobody can blame you for this failure to take responsibility. But this is only in your imagination. The outside world does not care much about what you think and believe about free will, but instead focuses on the results of your behavior. If you find yourself in jail for your misbehavior, nobody asks you if you believe in free will or not, but only pays attention to the consequences of your misbehavior.

Believing in free will and logical decision making go hand in hand. People who believe in free will are more likely to use logical thinking in their decision-making processes or we can say the opposite as well. People who use logical thinking much in their lives are more likely to believe in free will rather than randomness and pre-determinism. However, logical reasoning requires extensive time, energy, and prior knowledge in order to make decisions. That is why people follow logical thinking only when they have a great deal of time, when the subject to be decided is important and when they have low cognitive load. However, when you do not believe in free will, you do not need to pass through the challenging steps of logical decision-making processes, and you can approach your decisions from a superficial state. In the end, if the decision is the wrong one, you can blame other people involved in your decision, your destiny, the economy, the government, God, or the non-existence of free will in the existence of life for your failed decision.

In Free: Why Science Has not Disproved Free Will, Mele claims that believing in the existence of free will depends on how you understand the term “free will.” With a strict understanding of free will, you might conceive of making conscious decisions using logical thinking methods as totally independent of brain activity or as totally unconstrained by genetics and environment. But both of these are extreme understandings of free will. In real life, you cannot behave consciously and logically all the time because it requires too much time, energy and knowledge, and you

LIFE COACHING

cannot isolate yourselves from your genes and the environment you were born into. You have no free will in choosing your family or the country where you were born. And the foundation of your life is the influences you get from your family and the environment you were born into. Therefore, how can we claim that humans have absolute free will if the factors that form your personality and the beginning of your life circumstances are largely predetermined?

Although I sometimes feel total control over my life and sometimes feel like a boat in the middle of ocean, I am a firm believer in free will and mostly use logical reasoning in decision-making processes, but I am also aware of the constraints and boundaries in my life. I know where I have free will and where I do not. I think the secret of free will is being aware of where these differences lie and acting accordingly. Those factors that make you feel like you do not have absolute free will in life may be the ones that ensure your survival and security and keep you alive

on this earth. Those factors are the basis of who you are, and they profoundly shape your lives and the decisions you make via your conscious free will. My personal answer to the question of whether we have free will or not would be that there are some areas where we have free will and some areas where we do not. As sentient beings, we can use the power of logic to distinguish those areas and to exercise free will in those areas where we can. ■

PUBLIC RELATIONS AND THE POWER OF AUTHENTIC STORYTELLING FOR DIASPORA COMMUNITIES:

WRAPPING UP 2024 AND A NEW BEGINNING IN 2025

Authentic storytelling is not just a PR tool—it is a bridge connecting communities across continents, generations, and backgrounds.

As we come to the end of 2024, we observe that this year one pillar of public relations (PR) has gained particular importance: authentic storytelling. Especially for diaspora communities, authentic storytelling has proven to be one of the most meaningful ways to preserve cultural identity, foster connections, and engage audiences globally. PR strategies for diaspora communities have increasingly focused on sharing genuine stories that resonate with cultural nuances, personal experiences, and the realities of immigrant life. It is clear that authentic storytelling is not just a PR tool—it is a bridge connecting communities across continents, generations, and backgrounds.

For diaspora communities, cultural preservation is vital, and authentic storytelling is central to keeping traditions, customs, and values alive. In 2024, PR efforts for diaspora audiences leaned into storytelling as a way to reinforce these cultural ties, giving voice to experiences that resonate deeply within these communities. This year authentic storytelling of diaspora communities focused on messages that honor their roots. PR campaigns have increasingly featured stories of cultural resilience, migration journeys, and family legacies. By focusing on these shared experiences, PR professionals have helped create a stronger sense of identity and pride within

diaspora communities, allowing individuals to reconnect with their heritage even while far from home.

Diaspora communities have historically been wary of PR companies' brands that misrepresent or commercialize their cultural symbols. But those that incorporated genuine, authentic stories are welcomed with a warm reception. For instance, campaigns highlighting diaspora entrepreneurs, community leaders, and everyday stories of resilience fostered an emotional connection and built credibility. By focusing on personal stories and the experiences of people, PR professionals were able to humanize complex challenges. Authentic storytelling, in this sense, bridged the gap between awareness and action, encouraging diaspora members and allies to mobilize around shared causes.

As we move into 2025, the role of authentic storytelling in PR for diaspora communities will become more significant. With the rise of new digital platforms, there are even more avenues to share and amplify diaspora stories. The PR professionals will continue using diverse formats like podcasts, video series, and digital experiences to create richer, more engaging narratives. The focus will increasingly be on making audiences feel seen, heard, and connected to their heritage. In the coming year, in addition to preserving cultural identity, authentic storytelling will play a key role in encouraging younger generations within

the diaspora to take pride in their roots. By sharing stories that reflect complexities that diaspora members encounter, PR campaigns can help younger audiences feel a sense of belonging and pride in their backgrounds.

In closing, looking back at 2024, it is clear that authentic storytelling has shaped the way diaspora communities engage with PR and has elevated the role of PR as a community connector. By sharing real stories with respect and sincerity, PR professionals have helped diaspora audiences celebrate their heritage, advocate for change, and strengthen cultural ties. As we head into 2025, the power of authentic storytelling will continue to guide PR in its mission to connect, empower, and inspire diaspora communities worldwide. When done with authenticity, storytelling becomes more than a PR strategy—it becomes a lasting legacy that honors the past, supports the present, and shapes the future for generations to come. ■

KONYA : ONCE A CAPITAL FOR SELJUK TURKS, HOME OF MEVLANA AND DERVISHES

Authentic storytelling in Konya spans centuries—from the Seljuk architecture of Alaeddin Mosque to the mystical rituals of Mevlana’s whirling dervishes, weaving a narrative of culture, faith, and resilience.

Come, no matter what you are, Whether atheist or sun worshipper. Whether you have backslid a thousand times, Come, no matter what you are -Mevlana

Konya was the Seljuk capital during the 12th and 13th centuries. You can find Seljuk architecture, especially in its public buildings. The Alaeddin Mosque is the principal monument on the citadel of Konya. The building served as the “Mosque of Throne” for the Seljuq dynasty. Throughout history, Konya was controlled by the Hittites, Phrygians, Roman and Byzantine Empires, Seljuk, and Anatolian Seljuk States. In the end, the Ottoman Empire ruled Konya. Under Ottoman rule, Konya was

administered by the Sultan's sons (Şehzade), starting with Şehzade Mustafa and Şehzade Cem (the sons of Sultan Mehmed II) and continuing with the future Sultan Selim II. Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi is the symbol of Konya, who is a holy philosopher and mystical poet of Islam.

According to Mevlana, love is the only thing necessary to attain God. A plant or an animal may also love, but it is only man who has the capacity to love with his body, mind, thoughts, and memory. Mevlana exalts the state of being in love with a woman because if someone loves someone else, he also loves himself, humanity, the universe and God. The most beautiful love, “Love of Truth,” begins when someone reaches this level of wisdom. Followers of Mevlana (Mevlevi) spin around and around in a ritual called “sema.” This ritual symbolizes a world united in love and keeping

step with the world’s universal rotation. While one of their hands points to the sky, the other hand points to the ground meaning “Love from God spreads to the earth.” The spirit bursts forth from God and is immortal. The sound of the nay (a reed flute) tells of man’s longing to return to his initial source.

He means that the universe is an endless place within the existence of God and, as a small part of the whole, man keeps that divine essence inside him by saying, “You who search for God, it is you that you are searching for.”

Sufi Dervishes of the Mevlevi order is a customary meditation practice performed within the sema, or worship ceremony, through which dervishes aim to reach greater connection with God. This is sought through abandoning one's ego or personal desires, by listening to the music, focusing on God, and spinning one's

body in repetitive circles, which has been seen as a symbolic imitation of planets in the Solar System orbiting the Sun.

Seb-i Arus, which means "Wedding Night", is the name of the day of Hz. Mevlâna's death. It is known as "Hakk'a vuslat," which means, "Reunion with the God." Seb-i Arus events are held in many places in memory of the anniversary of Mevlâna's attainment of union. These ceremonies host the performances of whirling dervishes with the love of God and assemble people from all around the world with diverse religious beliefs every year on December 17.

Çatalhöyük: This is a neolithic settlement (7300 BC) near Konya. It was inhabited 9000 years ago by up to 8000 people who lived together in this large town.

The city of Çatalhöyük points to one of man's most important transformations, from nomad to settled farmer. Çatalhöyük had no streets or foot paths; the houses were built right up against each other and the people who lived in them traveled over the town’s rooftops and entered their homes through holes in the roofs, climbing down a ladder. Houses were roughly rectangular and closely built together with no streets in-between. Instead, people moved around on roofs and accessed their homes down a wooden ladder via an opening in the ceiling. It is also a site at which we see art, both painting and sculpture, appear to play a newly important role in the lives of settled people. the deceased were placed under the floors or platforms in houses and sometimes the skulls were removed and plastered to resemble live faces. The burials at Çatalhöyük show no significant variations, either based on wealth or gender; the only bodies which were treated differently, decorated with beads and covered with ochre, were those of children.

Konya Science Center and Planetarium: It is the first truly large interactive science center dedicated to informal learning about science and technology cooperated with The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Türkiye (TUBITAK). One of the attractions is the Science Center which is a complex covering several different branches with thematic exhibitions, outdoor exhibits and observation tower, planetary house, laboratories, and library. It offers visitors a unique experience

through interacting and experiencing science and technology.

Karatay Medresesi Museum Karatay Madrasa was commissioned in 1251 by Emir Celaleddin Karatay during the reign of Il İzzettin Keykavus. The architect of the madrasa is unknown. It was also utilized during the Ottoman period, but was abandoned by the end of the 19th century. Karatay Madrasa holds a significant place in the tile artifacts of the Anadolu Selcuklu Period and was opened as the "Tile Artefacts Museum" in 1955. The courtyard of the madrasa is adorned with a bright lighthouse in the center and mosaic tiles. The Karatay museum displays wall tiles, tile and glass plates from the Kubad-Abad Palace excavation on the edge of Beyşehir Lake, as well as tiles and ceramic plates from the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Mevlana Museum: The museum complex includes the mausoleum, a mosque, a dervish seminary, and several exhibition rooms, libraries, and research centers.

The Aziziye Mosque is an 17th century mosque. It is well known for the columned balcony of its minaret, an architectural feature rarely seen in Turkish mosques. It has

many features which make it one of a kind. It is a double minaret building. In each minaret the şerefe (balcony) roof is supported with columns, which makes the mosque unique in Türkiye, Meram Vineyards: Of course, Konya is not only museums and historic places; it has sightseeing places like Meram Bagları (vineyards), as well. It is an urban spot serving city residents for centuries, especially during hot season for promenade. Cafes and restaurants scatter two sides of Meram Creek, adorned by a Seljuk bridge offering a refreshing break. ■

CELEBRATING TURKISH CINEMA: HIGHLIGHTS FROM TÜRKİYE’S FILM FESTIVALS

Authentic storytelling and cultural depth took center stage at Türkiye’s top film festivals this year, showcasing films that captivated audiences both locally and internationally.

Film festival season is almost over. As an annual cultural event, many of them were all over Türkiye. You can say there were more than several hot air balloons in Cappadocia.

This is also an excellent time to look at the leading festivals to find Turkish films that won or dominated the awards. Of course, other award categories ranged from acting to technical achievements and lifetime recognitions. However, we are trying to focus on the "Best Film" category, hoping that the films will make it to the US and that we will have a chance to see, enjoy, and evaluate them.

Istanbul Film Festival

The 43rd Istanbul Film Festival, held between April 17-28, was the one that started the

season. Hesitation Wound (Tereddüt Çizgisi), the legal drama film written and directed by Selman Nacar, was the winner. Hesitation Wound celebrated its world premiere at the 2023 Venice Film Festival; within the Orizzonti section, it was recognized as the "Best International Feature" at the Zurich Film Festival and earned Nacar the "Best Director" award at the Arras Film Festival.

Magnolia Pictures International bought hesitation wound for Worldwide Sales. Lorna Lee Torres, head of international sales at Magnolia called the film an“… exciting, suspenseful Turkish drama with a riveting performance by Tülin Özen – we think it will be a strong standout. The film does not fall into the typical cliches of other courtroom dramas but uses urgent pacing throughout and delivers a story with real moral weight.”

Hesitation Wound has a plot that expands

and builds exponentially as the film goes on, allowing both to reveal the abusive power and greed held in the Western city of Uşak.

Tülin Özen as Canan, the lawyer, makes a riveting performance over less than 24 hours, and Nacar closes the film with a one-two punch that strikes deep.

Selman Nacar is a filmmaker with an MFA in film directing from Columbia University in New York City and a trained lawyer. Nacar is a director to watch. He made a strong debut with Between Two Dawns in 2021, showing the moral failures involving an injured worker at a family’s business that premiered at San Sebastian and won "Best Film" at Torino.

In an interview, Nacar said, “As an idealistic young man, I believed that I could change society with my knowledge of law and that it was my duty to strive for a more just and peaceful life. However, until I decided to

TURKISH CINEMA

pursue cinema as a profession, there was a huge void inside me that I could not describe. For years, I changed cities, countries, and universities in search of it, and when I met cinema, this emptiness was suddenly and definitively filled.“

Adana Film Festival

The International Adana Golden Boll Film Festival is one of Türkiye's most prestigious film festivals, which has been running for 30 years. The festival crowned Murat Firatoğlu’s One of Those Days When Hemme Dies (Hemme’nin Öldüğü Günlerden Biri).

Firatoğlu went to his 1983 birthplace, Siverek, to shoot his first feature film, taking on the leading role. His film won the "Jury Special Award" in the Orrizonti section of the 81st Venice Film before winning at the 31st Adana Golden Boll Film Festival.

The film tells the story of Eyüp, a seasonal worker under the scorching sun during a tomato harvest to pay off his debt after returning from Izmir to his sick mother's house with his wife and three children. He works drying tomatoes but cannot earn his daily wage. Eyüp angrily wanders around the city to kill Hemme. The day ends at a wedding where he dances the folk dance of halay side by side with Hemme, as the villagers constantly distract him with unimportant tasks.

Firatoğlu studied law at Dicle University. He is a film director, screenwriter, and producer of Kurdish origin who lives in Istanbul and works as a lawyer.

Antalya Film Festival

The 2024 edition of the festival in the Turkish Mediterranean resort city of Antalya, first held in 1963, is one of Türkiye’s most renowned film events. And Fate (Mukadderat) by Nadim Güç topped the jurors' choice for the Best Turkish Film in the 2024 edition that ran on October 5-12.

Winning "Best Female Actor" for Nur Sürer, in the role of Sultan, who lost her husband, she tells her children that she wants to get remarried immediately not to be alone. While looking for a husband, she starts a business and turns her house into a hostel. She also works at the market, inspiring other women in the town.

This is the director's first film after honing his skills in TV serials, and he found his lead actor when he helmed Women in The Window (Camdaki Kiz).

1983 Malatya-born Nadim Güç studied radio, television, and film at Gazi University and won the "Best Film Award" in Istanbul’s Bosphorus Film Festival (October 18-25, 2024). He expressed his feelings in a prefestival interview “I do not define myself from a place like 'I look at a woman’s face and see her troubles.' I like telling women’s stories because women have more depth. I can deepen women’s characters as much as I want compared to men. Since I have been able to choose a project as a director, I have never said to anyone, 'Bring me a woman's story.' However, I have always liked women’s stories from the stories that came my way.”

Ankara Film Festival

The Ankara Film Festival was held for the first time in 1988. After a hiatus in 1991 primarily due to the Gulf War, the festival returned with the 35th edition held this year between November 7-15. Murat Firatoğlu’s One of Those Days When Hemme Dies (Hemme’nin Öldüğü Günlerden Biri) was chosen as "Best Picture," repeating with another win following the Adana Golden Boll Film Festival. The awards were presented in memory of Ankara Film Festival's president, who passed away recently. In his opening, the festival organizer, World Mass Communication Research Foundation President İrfan Demirkol, said in memory of his wife and

former festival president İnci Demirkol, "It was the most difficult and painful festival of my life. But we decided to continue this festival to keep İnci's memory alive and to prevent the curtains from closing."

We hope to see the winners of Turkish films at major Turkish film festivals on this side of the world. Meanwhile, Life (Hayat) is directed by Zeki Demirkubuz. The 2023 Turkish drama film was the Turkish entry for the "Best International Feature Film" at the 97th Academy Awards, hoping to make the final nomination list. Over the years, twentyeight Turkish films have been submitted for consideration and have yet to achieve an Oscar nomination.

Last year, Germany's entry, The Teachers' Lounge, directed by Ilker Çatak, who was born in Berlin to Turkish parents, made that final list. ■
