August 30 is a day of national pride, marking the birth of a modern, secular nation in 1922 under Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's leadership. Across Türkiye and its embassies worldwide, ceremonies and events honor the legacy of those who fought for independence with deep respect and gratitude for their contributions to the nation’s integrity and freedom.

ISTANBUL AIRPORT: THE WORLD’S BEST-CONNECTED HUB
Istanbul Airport has claimed the title of the world’s best-connected airport, according to a recent report by aviation analytics firm Cirium. This recognition highlights the airport’s impressive network of nonstop flights to unique destinations worldwide, a remarkable achievement for an airport that opened just six years ago in 2018.
Strategically positioned at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, Istanbul Airport now operates 309 nonstop routes to destinations across the globe. Turkish Airlines, the national carrier, contributes significantly to this network, flying to more countries than any other airline. With around 90 million
passengers passing through annually, Istanbul Airport ranks as the seventh busiest in the world and boasts an annual capacity of 200 million passengers.
The surge in air traffic during the first half of 2024 has surpassed pre-pandemic levels, underscoring the airport’s vital role in international travel. Selahattin Bilgen, CEO of Istanbul Airport, noted, “Our strategic location at the crossroads of Europe and Asia allows us to serve as a vital hub for international travel. We have also proven to be the most resilient airport, recovering the fastest ever after the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Following Istanbul, Frankfurt Airport
ranks second, with 296 nonstop destinations, and Paris Charles de Gaulle comes in third with 282. Amsterdam Schiphol Airport and Chicago O’Hare International Airport tie for fourth place, each serving 270 nonstop destinations.
Other top-ranking airports include Dubai International (269 destinations), Dallas Fort Worth International (261), and Shanghai Pudong International (243), the latter being the best-connected airport in Asia.
As air travel continues to recover and grow, Istanbul Airport’s strategic location and extensive network solidify its position as a leading global aviation hub.

Through its General Directorate of Exports, the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Trade has established a comprehensive plan for cross-border e-commerce actions and initiatives extending until 2025. This strategic framework initially set a target of $10 billion in cross-border e-commerce. By 2025, there is optimism that the set target will be exceeded.
Looking ahead to 2028, the ministry has set forth an ambitious vision: to secure a 10% share of overall exports and to elevate cross-border e-commerce to a $40 billion industry.
To formulate the action plans for 20262028, the Cross-Border E-Commerce Search Conference was convened at the end of April. This discovery highlights the cultural exchanges between distant regions during the Neolithic period. As the oldest known religious sanctuary, Göbeklitepe continues to reveal its mysteries, drawing global attention and thousands of visitors annually. EMPOWERING LEGACIES: HOW PLANNED GIVING WITH TURKISH PHILANTHROPY FUNDS CREATES IMPACT ACROSS BORDERS
Planned giving is not just about financial contributions—it is about leaving a meaningful legacy that reflects your values and makes a lasting impact.
By Senay Ataselim-Yilmaz, PhD
All of us desire to make a lasting impact with our giving. Over the years, I have seen that the idea of giving back and leaving a meaningful legacy is a significant part of many of our donors’ life journeys. Whether it is supporting education, gender equality, health initiatives, or disaster relief, all of us are looking for ways to ensure our contributions make a difference.
This is where planned giving comes in—a thoughtful approach allowing individuals to align their values with long-term philanthropic goals. At Turkish Philanthropy Funds (TPF), we work closely with donors who wish to make a lasting impact in Türkiye and the United States long after they are gone.
The Power of Planned Giving
Planned giving is more than just a financial tool; it is a way to ensure that the causes
closest to your heart benefit from your support long after you are gone. As your trusted partner, we provide a seamless way to contribute to meaningful initiatives while enjoying the financial advantages planned giving offers.
A Story of Impact: Leaving a Legacy of Education
Consider the story of Ayşe Hanım, a retired educator who immigrated to the United States from Türkiye decades ago. Ayşe Hanım remained deeply connected to her roots and was passionate about education throughout her life. When planning her estate, Ayşe Hanım wanted to ensure that her family’s legacy would continue supporting educational opportunities for underprivileged students in Türkiye. Through TPF, Ayşe Hanım established a charitable remainder trust, which allowed her to receive income during her lifetime and ensured that, upon
her passing, the remaining assets would fund scholarships for students in Türkiye. By working with her legal and financial advisors along with TPF, Ayşe Hanım created a plan that provided financial security and ensured that her passion for education would live on, making a tangible difference in the lives of students in Türkiye. Working with her advisors, we were able to turn Ayşe Hanım’s philanthropic visions into reality by guiding them through establishing planned gifts with TPF.
Tailored Giving Options
TPF offers a variety of planned giving options that can be tailored to meet both financial and philanthropic goals:
● Gifts Anyone Can Make: These include wills, trusts, Donor Advised Funds (DAFs), IRA rollovers, life insurance, retirement plans, and gifts of stocks or appreciated assets. These options allow individuals to
make a significant impact without affecting their daily cash flow or family security.
● Gifts That Provide Income: Options such as charitable gift annuities, deferred gift annuities, and charitable remainder trusts offer a steady income stream during the donor's lifetime, while still supporting their chosen causes.
● Gifts That Protect Assets: These options, including charitable bargain sales, retained life estates, and charitable lead trusts, allow donors to contribute without compromising their financial security, particularly for those with highly appreciated properties.
A Legacy That Crosses Borders
Planned to give through TPF allows our donors to make a difference both in Türkiye and in the US. Take the story of Mehmet and Sara, a couple who built a successful business in the US but never forgot their humble beginnings in Türkiye. They wanted their legacy to reflect their journey and support the country they came from and the one that gave them opportunities. By establishing a donor-advised fund with TPF, Mehmet and Sara were able to support community projects in their hometown in Türkiye while also contributing to local charities in the US that aligned with their values.
A Partner for Advisors and Donors Alike
TPF works closely with legal and financial advisors who play a crucial role in helping their clients navigate complex decisions that shape their legacies. We are here to support both advisors and donors

Exclusive Interview with DEMET TUNCER
A JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION: DEMET TUNCER ON CHARISMA, ACTING, AND GLOBAL INFLUENCE
“Real
connection
doesn’t come from formulas; it comes from authenticity and embracing vulnerability.”
By Sitki Kazanci
Demet Tuncer is an award-winning actress, master of stagecraft, and charismatic presence consultant. As the creator of “Lead with Charisma” and an international speaker, she has captivated audiences around the globe. In this interview, Demet shares her inspiring journey from Istanbul to the world stage, the art of charisma, and the challenges of reinventing herself in the United States.
We had the pleasure of sitting down with Demet Tuncer, a dynamic force in the world of acting and communication. From her roots in Istanbul to her impactful presence on international stages, Demet’s journey is a testament to the power of charisma and resilience. In this exclusive interview, she opens up about her early life, her transition to the United States, and how she harnesses the art of stagecraft to inspire and transform others.
Can you tell us about your birthplace, education and parents?
I was born and raised in Levent, Istanbul, until I was 15, when I received a national scholarship to attend United World College (UWC) in the US, an international boarding school led
by honorary presidents like Nelson Mandela and Queen Nour. UWC’s mission is to unite people, nations, and cultures for peace and a sustainable future, and I was fortunate to earn an International Baccalaureate degree there. That school changed my life forever! I graduated from the US and studied political science and sociology.
My father, Av. Erdogan Tuncer, was a charismatic lawyer and journalist. He was asked to visit with the US student bodies through the John F. Kennedy scholarship when he was the president for the National Student Federation in Türkiye. He was smart, witty, and managed to turn his 5-minute appointment with former President Truman into an afternoon-long conversation with just one question. He loved his BJK and was the head of legal counsel until he passed. My mother, Av. Tulin Tuncer, is still practicing law at 80.
How did your professional journey in the United States begin, and what can you share about your American life?
My professional journey in the United States took off organically over offering my tips and tricks to executive friends to enhance their stage presence and communication skills, making their presentations and keynotes more engaging. As they experienced significant transformations, word spread like wildfire, especially among professional women. What started as a small favor quickly grew to launching my female owned, boutique, Demet Tuncer Consultancy LLC, where I now specialize in charismatic presence and stage mastery.
Could you talk about your acting roles, particularly in “Çocuklar Duymasın”?
Mary Hanim in “Cocuklar Duymasin” was a bigger success than anyone, including the producers, anticipated. When Birol Guven approached me about the role, he candidly said, “Demet, I don’t know how this role will land with the Turkish people. They may totally hate the character.” Despite the uncertainty, I was determined to give her a shot…and the rest is history!
How foreign characters were portrayed, with exaggerated, unrealistic accents really
bothered me. You know the type—“Ben geliyor, sen gidiyor”—but that is not how foreigners actually speak. The reason Mary Hanim was a huge success was because she was real; I created a real American who eventually started speaking with an authentic broken accent, the cultural bloops. Being bilingual was a huge advantage, and observing cultural differences, verbal and nonverbal cues, and using them as needed made the difference.
The biggest challenge was pretending not to speak and understand Turkish on set when I am Turkish!
My knack for accents and understanding the nuances of different nationalities led to me being typecast in foreign roles—Greek, Italian, French, Russian, you name it. A great example is my role in “Yahsi Bati” with Cem Yilmaz. The US postal carriage scene became a huge hit. My co-actor was British, and I played his young wife. During post-production in London, they even asked Cem which casting agency they used in London to find me! Cem was so proud to tell them, “Brother, she’s Turkish, and we found her in Istanbul!” I was proud too!
What inspired you to choose your career path?
I have always considered myself one of those fortunate souls who knew what they wanted and understood their purpose. When I was 5, I discovered the pure joy of singing, dancing, and imitating characters for my parents’ friends. Their laughter and applause were so deeply fulfilling, even when my dad gave me that look to stop. But his friends kept encouraging me to continue, and seeing their joy sparked something intense within me.
As I grew older, my passion evolved into a deeper purpose. It became less about just entertaining and more about truly connecting with people on an emotional level. I realized that through my performances, I could make people feel seen, heard, and understood. This led me to develop my unique style, especially in hosting events for major companies like Coca-Cola, Microsoft, The Koc Family, FIFA,
FIBA, and TEDx. By blending my acting and singing skills with an intuitive ability to read the rooms, I became a true entertainer.
This unique style eventually led me to host the evening at the Davos World Economic Forum. My international background and years of experience culminated in an event that Klaus Schwab, the founder of the World Economic Forum, described as something Davos had not seen in its 30-year history. When my team and I returned home, the headlines read, "We went to get victory; we came back writing history!" It was one of the toughest but most emotionally fulfilling projects I have ever worked on. And from that event on, I was called the “Cultural Ambassador of Türkiye.”
So circling back to your question, what inspired my career path is simple: I was born with a clear purpose, given talents and an inner magnet so strong that pulled me in the direction of my heart. Today, I speak to large audiences and professional women, engaging in ways that inspire, motivate, and transform. But it is not just about what I do—it is about the deep connection and impact I create. People often seek to learn the charismatic presence I bring, but what the world truly needs
is connection. And real connection does not come from formulas; it comes from authenticity and embracing vulnerability, showing up with courage.
What has been the most challenging aspect of your work so far?
The most challenging aspect of my work so far has been navigating the transition from a well-established career in Türkiye to starting anew in the United States. It was not just about moving to a new country; it was about reinventing my professional identity from scratch. The shift brought with it a sense of loss and uncertainty, and on top of that I suddenly found myself without a team. I had all the ideas and projects but no help! I was overwhelmed and paralyzed by the sheer magnitude of it all. Never being the one to give up, I dove right into my fear and started my YouTube channel “Demet Tuncer” to test myself, where I became a one-woman show, handling pre-production, production, post-production, and everything in between. Through this process, I realized I WAS ENOUGH—more than enough! The channel skyrocketed during the pandemic reaching 258K subscribers in a very short period. The channel became a huge success, not just for
me but for the audience who found both education and entertainment in my content. Now, I’m excited to start posting regularly again, knowing I have the creativity and capability to make it happen.
Could you tell us about your upcoming projects?
I am thrilled about several upcoming projects. My consultancy is dedicated to crafting charismatic presence, mastering stage delivery, and empowering professionals to make a lasting impact. I also serve as a senior facilitator at 41 North Business School, where I teach Stagecraft to C-level leaders, helping them refine their presence and influence.
In addition to these roles, I am tailoring a specialized training program for Executive MBAs at Pacific University’s Business School and preparing to teach Business Communication class my style. I continue to coach storytellers for "The Immigrant Story Live," and emcee the evening, mentor women professionals through "Sparks USA," and I am honored to have been selected as a Portland City Commissioner for the Immigrants and Refugees Committee, where I advocate for creating and nurturing inclusive communities.
What hobbies and activities do you enjoy in your free time?
Finding free time is a challenge with a 13-yearold daughter, a busy work schedule, and social commitments. Yet, I make it a point to carve out moments for myself, indulging in activities like making jewelry, meditating, playing pickleball, dancing, and enjoying time with Ayza, my husband, and close friends. I also take advantage of opportunities to film videos for my social media content.
Is there something about you that might surprise the readers of TurkNetwork magazine?
I have 2 Turkish Tony Awards for best female actress in musical and comedy (Afife Jale & Sadri Alisik). I single handedly, physically tackled a thief running away from the police and got scolded by my mom. (I was 16…!) And here’s another fun fact: I have lent my voice to beloved Disney characters, including voicing Tiana in the Turkish version of The Princess and the Frog. And a less known fact: I was approached by the CIA when I was going to college. Now that is a funny story to tell perhaps for another time.
Who has been the most influential person in your life, and why?
My parents were the most influential people in my life, each nurturing and challenging different parts of me. My mother, Tulin, embodies resilience and independence, always encouraging me to stay true to myself and guiding me with her wisdom and strength. She has been a constant source of support, showing me how to navigate life's challenges with grace.
My father, Erdogan, was a versatile and charismatic figure—he was the true embodiment of charisma. Observing him inspired me to create my own framework for cultivating charisma, which I now teach in my programs. Together, they have been the pillars of my strength and inspiration, nurturing different aspects of my character and guiding me on my journey. I am truly grateful and lucky to be their daughter.

close to losing faith in myself, not feeling my worth. I encourage everyone to write this quote down and place it somewhere visible, like on a mirror, as a daily reminder: "Look, and know that pearls aren't tossed to swine, Only those with eyes for jewels see their shine.

If they can not see your worth, don’t think you’re unrefined." - Rumi
And this quote was my “AHA” moment where all the struggle and the challenge just made perfect sense!!

Remember, you have the power to turn setbacks into stepping stones. Walk through the darkness with strength, because the beauty lies on the other side. Do not hide in the corner with worries and fears—it changes nothing. Get uncomfortable, no growth happens in comfort zones! You still must face the rough waters. COMMUNITY STAR: ATA ERIM
This month, Dr Ata Erim is our Community Star—truly a Community Star for all ages. Dr Erim has faced many challenges head-on throughout his life. He first became a successful physician and then dedicated his time and resources to developing and leading the Federation of Turkish American Associations, a vital all-inclusive umbrella organization in the US. Even at his advanced age, he is actively involved in developing the Turkish American Community Center in New Jersey, which features the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk School and a statue of Atatürk. His new book, ABD’de 60 Yıl, is an easily readable account that contains insights into many experiences and challenges that many of us may recognize.
By Oya Bain
Few names stand as prominently in the annals of Turkish-American history as Dr Ata Erim, whom we proudly honor as this month’s Community Star.
In this exclusive interview, Dr Erim shares his remarkable journey—from his early beginnings in Türkiye to his impactful years in the United States. He offers insights into his education, career, and the profound influence of his leadership within the Turkish-American community. Dr Erim’s story is one of personal success and a lifelong commitment to preserving and promoting Turkish culture and heritage in America. We invite you to explore the life of a true community leader whose legacy will inspire generations to come.
Can you tell us about your early beginnings, including your childhood, original birthplace, and family?
I was born in the Black Sea coastal city of Samsun in 1929. My parents, Yusuf and Esma, moved to Samsun from Ioannina and Drama in the early 1920s as part of the population
exchange between Greeks and Ottoman Turks. Our family established its roots in the Balkan hinterland of the Ottoman Empire in 1491 when our first ancestors settled there. My parents met and married in Samsun, and they had three sons and one daughter.
What factors influenced you most during your formative years? How was your early education?
My childhood coincided with a difficult time for my country. Türkiye was still recovering from World War I, and the young Republic, founded in 1923, was facing many challenges. Despite the chaos and change in the region, my early years were relatively comfortable. My father was a successful merchant and provided our family with an above-average lifestyle. In school, I was always at the top of my class and spent much of my time studying, helping with household chores, and playing childhood games with my two brothers, Yusuf and Yılmaz, and my sister, Nihal. Our happiness was shattered when my father passed away in 1943. I was only thirteen years old, and losing my hero was very traumatic.
The ensuing years brought financial hardships, but our family bonds were strong, and we found ways to endure those difficult times.
What was your higher education journey? Where and what did you study?
After graduating from high school, I realized that to receive a good education, I would have to move to Istanbul. My family made many sacrifices to support my university education. My sister Nihal and younger brother Yılmaz ended their schooling early to work and contribute financially to the household.
How did you choose your career path?
Since I was the best student among my siblings, I had the privilege of pursuing higher education. I felt a great responsibility toward them to succeed. I was admitted to the medical school at Istanbul University. Moving to a large, cosmopolitan city like Istanbul for the first time presented many financial and social challenges. I immersed myself in my studies, as failure was not an option. Financial hardships forced me to take a year off from university, during which I
“As Turks, we have a rich culture and history; sharing it with the American people has been one of the most fulfilling endeavors of my life.”
opened a cleaning business and earned enough money to pay for my final year of education. I graduated in 1955 and then completed my oneand-a-half-year mandatory military service as a doctor in the Turkish Armed Forces. After my military service, I joined Istanbul American Hospital as a physician practicing internal medicine, which allowed me to gain valuable experience working with talented Turkish doctors.
Could you tell us about your journey to the US and your initial experiences there?
My tenure at the American Hospital was shortlived but life-changing. One morning, while doing routine rounds, the hospital’s American director, Dr Swanker, approached me and asked a question in English. Although I had always been an excellent student, I never had the opportunity
to learn a foreign language. I only knew a few words in English, so I smiled and responded, “Yes, sir,” without understanding the question. The director seemed pleased with my response. After he left, the hospital’s chief resident asked if I understood the director’s question. Embarrassingly, I admitted that I did not. The chief resident then informed me that the director had offered me a job as a doctor in the United States, and I had accepted it. The following week was a whirlwind of paperwork and goodbyes as I prepared to leave behind everything I knew. Coming to America was quite an adventure. I spoke limited English, and the culture, cuisine, and social life were unlike anything I had experienced before. My first months in this distant country were spent buried in work and learning the language. My average workweek was 80 hours, so leisure time was a rare luxury. I was very homesick, and international calls were difficult to place. Financially, I was earning much more in the US, allowing me to save 80% of my salary to send back home to my family. As the months and years passed, I learned the language and culture, made new friends, and began meeting with members of the small Turkish community in New York and New Jersey. Spending time with Turkish expatriates was a remedy for my homesickness, as we would talk for hours about our country, families, and the challenges we faced in America.
Please tell us how the Federation of Turkish American Associations (FTAA) was formed.
During our conversations, we realized the need to organize the community and work to promote a better understanding of Turkish culture, history, and people. Our first step was forming the Turkish-American Medical Association in 1968, where I served as the organization’s president for nine years. In 1970, I was elected president of the Federation of Turkish American Associations, an umbrella organization for all TurkishAmerican NGOs.
What were the challenges and memorable moments of leading a large nonprofit advocacy organization in the US?
One of the biggest challenges we faced as a community was breaking stereotypes about Turks, dispelling deep-rooted myths about the so-called Armenian genocide, and creating a support system for newly arrived Turks in the US.
How has your leadership style contributed to the success of FTAA, which continues to function effectively today?
During my presidency, I focused on overcoming these challenges and fostering unity and inclusivity in our growing community. Reflecting on my 12 years of service as FTAA President, I am particularly proud of organizing the first Turkish American Day Parade, one of my most significant accomplishments. Sharing our rich culture and history with the American public through this celebration has been incredibly fulfilling. Over four decades, I have witnessed the parade grow from a few hundred participants to over thirty thousand. Another accomplishment I am proud of is the strong network and friendships I have built with American politicians over the years. These relationships have helped raise awareness of issues important to the Turkish-American community in Washington, DC. I was also actively supportive of former President George H.W. Bush’s campaign, as Democratic candidate Michael Dukakis’s views on Türkiye caused great concern among the Turkish-American community.
Please tell us about the new Atatürk Park at the Turkish American Community Center in New Jersey. Now in my nineties, I spend most of my time with
my wife, sons, and grandchildren. My energy is dedicated to the Turkish American Community Center, a project that has always been close to my heart. Watching young Turkish Americans learn about their history, culture, and language at the Mustafa Kemal Atatürk School located at the Community Center fills me with hope for the future. This October 29th, we plan to unveil a statue of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk at the Community Center. As the founder of modern Türkiye and a leader whose reforms firmly positioned the country as part of the Western world, his presence at the Community Center will always remind us of Türkiye’s commitment to peace and a strong relationship with the United States.
Tell us about your book ABD’de 60 Yıl. Do you keep a diary of your many experiences?
It has been nearly seven decades since I came to the United States. Our community has grown from hundreds to hundreds of thousands during this time. Recently, I wrote an autobiography about my experiences. I hope that younger generations of Turkish Americans will have the opportunity to read the book. Nothing has ever come easy, whether as an individual or as part of the Turkish-American community. However, America is the land of opportunity, and with hard work and determination, anything is achievable.
Would you like to share any message with our readers?
My message to the readers is this: I hope my story can inspire our youth to serve our community well, regardless of the challenges and roadblocks they may encounter. ■

WORLD DEVELOPMENT REPORT 2024
THE MIDDLE-INCOME TRAP
Middle-income countries—home today to 6 billion people—are in a race against time.
By David N. Smith
Since the 1990s, many middle-income countries have done well enough to escape low-income levels and eradicate extreme poverty, leading to the general perception that the last three decades have been great for development. But their expectations have been abysmally low—remnants of a period when more than two-thirds of the world lived on less than a dollar a day.
Today, 108 countries are classified as middleincome. The ambition of many of them is to reach high-income status within the next two or three decades. However, when assessed against this goal, their record is dismal. Since the 1990s, only 34 middle-income economies have attained high-income status. Together, they account for less than 250 million people—the population of Pakistan. And since 1970, the median income per capita of middle-income countries has never risen above 10 percent of the US level.
To escape the “middle-income trap,” countries need to undergo two transitions. With rising debt and aging populations at home, growing protectionism in advanced economies, and escalating pressures to speed up the energy transition, today’s middle-income countries are facing growing headwinds. World Development Report 2024 identifies pathways for these countries to avoid the middle-income trap. To do so, they will need to undergo not one but two transitions:
● The first is to transition from a “1i ” strategy for accelerating investment to a “2i ” strategy that emphasizes both investment and infusion, in which a country brings technologies from abroad and diffuses them domestically.
● Once a country has succeeded, it can switch to a “3i ” strategy, in which it adds innovation to the mix of investment and infusion.
They need to adopt different growth strategies at different stages of development. Depending on their special circumstances and the stage of development they have reached, countries need to adopt a sequenced and progressively more sophisticated mix of policies (see table):
● Low-income countries can focus solely on policies designed to increase investment—the 1i approach.
● Once they attain lower-middle-income status, countries must shift gears and expand the policy mix to 2i, investment + infusion.
● At the upper-middle-income level, countries need to shift gears again to 3i: investment + infusion + innovation
Drawing on the development experience and advances in economic analysis since the 1950s, World Development Report 2024 identifies what developing economies can do to avoid the “middle-income trap.” Lower-middle-income countries must go beyond investment-driven strategies—they must also adopt modern technologies and successful business practices from abroad and infuse them across their economies. Upper-middle-income countries need to accelerate the shift to innovation, by pushing the global frontiers of technology. This requires reconfiguring economic structures governing enterprises, labor, and energy use—in ways that enable greater economic freedom, social mobility, and political contestability.
Transitions across growth strategies are not automatic.
Middle-income countries will need progressively greater economic freedom, ever more open and informed debates, and—ever more frequently— the political courage to change stubborn institutions and long-standing arrangements.
The handful of countries that have made speedy transitions from middle- to high-income status have encouraged enterprise by disciplining powerful incumbents, developed talent by rewarding merit, and capitalized on crises to alter policies and institutions that are no longer suited for the purposes they were once designed to serve. Today’s middle-income countries will have to do the same:
● Discipline incumbents. Incumbents—large corporations, state-owned enterprises, and powerful citizens—can add immense value, but they can just as easily reduce it. Governments must devise mechanisms to discipline incumbents through competition regimes that encourage new entrants without either coddling small- and medium-size enterprises or vilifying big corporations.
● Reward merit activities. Middle-income countries have smaller reservoirs of skilled talent than advanced economies and are also less efficient at utilizing them. So they will have to become better at accumulating and allocating talent.
● Capitalize on crises. Cheap, reliable energy has been a cornerstone of rapid economic development, but prospering while keeping the planet livable will now require paying more attention to energy efficiency and emissions intensity. Exigencies, such as climate change, provide opportunities to dismantle outdated arrangements and make room for new ones. In democracies, crises are painful, but they can help forge the consensus needed for tough policy reforms. ■
Enterprise
LOW-INCOME COUNTRIES: 1i: Investment
● Improve the investment climate to increase domestic and foreign investment.
Talent
● Invest in human capital by broadening foundational skills and improving learning outcomes.
2i: Investment + Infusion
● Discipline market leaders through integration into globally contestable markets.
● Diffuse global technologies with fluid factor and product markets.
● Reward value-adding firms to stimulate business dynamism.
● Discipline elites by providing equal opportunities for women, minorities, and disadvantaged groups.
● Improve allocation of talent to task.
● Develop links among local and globally leading universities.
● Allow emigration of educated workers whose skills are not valued in domestic markets.
Energy
● Increase investment in expanding access and grid networks.
● Reform regulatory frameworks to attract private investment and ensure fair competition.
● Discipline SOEs by hardening budget constraints.
● Use international coalitions to encourage advanced economies to ease protection of domestic incumbents.
● Aid adoption of energy-efficient practices.
● Enhance economic efficiency by reflecting environmental costs in energy prices.
UPPER-MIDDLE-INCOME COUNTRIES
3i: Investment + Infusion + Innovation
● Deepen capital markets and expand equity financing.
● Strengthen antitrust regulation and competition agencies.
● Protect intellectual property rights.
● Strengthen industryacademia links domestically.
● Expand programs to connect with and diaspora in advanced economies.
● Enhance economic and political freedoms.
● Lower the cost of capital for low-carbon energy by reducing risks involving technology, markets, and policy.
● Increase multilateral finance for very longterm investments.

THE O-1 VISA: A GATEWAY FOR EXTRAORDINARY TALENTS ACROSS INDUSTRIES
The O-1 visa, also known as the "celebrity visa," is a nonimmigrant visa for people with extraordinary ability or achievement in the arts, sciences, education, business, or athletics. It can also be used by people who have demonstrated exceptional achievement in the television or motion picture industry and have been recognized nationally or internationally.
By Muhammed Üzüm
The O-1 Visa is an emblem of the United States' dedication to embracing extraordinary talents from across the globe. This specialized visa category serves as a magnet for those who are renowned in their professional spheres and aspire to extend their influence within American society. As an immigration attorney, my practice is deeply rooted in recognizing and
advocating for these remarkable individuals, enabling them to share their extraordinary abilities in the US and contribute to its legacy of innovation and cultural richness. The O-1 Visa stands out for its detailed yet rewarding pathway, which has been navigated by universally famous personalities such as Justin Bieber, Trevor Noah, Hugh Jackman, Lionel Messi, and more, underscoring its role as a vital vehicle for extraordinary talents’ US immigration.
EXPLORING THE O-1 VISA'S CATEGORIES: RECOGNIZING EXTRAORDINARY TALENTS
The O-1 Visa program is a strategic asset of the US designed to attract individuals who have proven to be leaders and innovators in their respective fields. The O-1A category is for professionals with extraordinary abilities in the sciences, education, business, or athletics. It recognizes those whose accomplishments are at the forefront of their disciplines
and can propel American industries to new heights. Conversely, the O-1B visa is dedicated to artists, entertainers, and performers who have achieved distinction, such as actor Hugh Jackman, whose exemplary career and international recognition in the performing arts have led to his successful acquisition of an O-1B visa.
The stringent criteria for O-1A and O-1B visas include evidence of national or international awards, significant media recognition, memberships in prestigious organizations, and extensive documentation of the individual's contributions to their field. The O-1 visa acknowledges personal success and ensures that these extraordinary professionals enrich the US with their innovative skills and cultural heritage, enhancing the nation's global standing in various sectors.
EXPANSIVE ELIGIBILITY: CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE IN VARIED FIELDS
The O-1 Visa's eligibility criteria are expansive, inclusive, and designed to recognize diverse individuals who have demonstrated exceptional ability and achievement. While the visa is indeed a pathway for internationally respected talents like soccer maestro Lionel Messi, who has successfully secured his place in the US through an O-1 visa, it also caters to those who might not be in the public eye but have nonetheless reached leading positions in their professions. These people are
often authorities in their fields, having earned major, internationally recognized awards, such as Nobel Prizes or Olympic medals, or they might have a sustained track record of prominent, original contributions that have led to substantial scholarly or peer acclaim.
The eligibility extends to recognizing those whose work has significantly impacted their industry, evidenced by leading roles in distinguished organizations or commanding a high salary or other substantial remuneration indicative of their extraordinary status. This ensures that the US benefits not just from star athletes and celebrities but also from top-tier scientists, groundbreaking researchers, innovative entrepreneurs, and acclaimed experts in every imaginable field. The O-1 Visa thus serves as a dynamic tool for enriching the intellectual and cultural fabric of the nation by inviting individuals who are not only at the summit of their careers but also bring a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and innovation to the American landscape.
ENRICHING THE US THROUGH EXTRAORDINARY CONTRIBUTIONS
The O-1 Visa holders are a driving force in the US economy and culture, and their influence extends far beyond the immediate scope of
their fields. For instance, Justin Bieber, a recipient of the O-1 Visa, has made valuable contributions to the American music industry, influencing genres and trends while generating substantial economic activity through concerts, merchandise, and media presence. The success stories of O-1 Visa recipients like Bieber underscore the visa's role in attracting individuals whose talents and endeavors have a multiplier effect, leading to job creation, stimulating innovation, and enhancing the global competitiveness of US industries.
O-1 Visa holders stimulate economic progression and play a crucial role in cultural exchange and diversity. These individuals bring unique perspectives and skills that enrich the American arts and sciences, fostering cross-cultural dialogue and understanding. The USCIS data reflecting thousands of O-1 visas approved annually is a testament to the United States' recognition and appreciation of the invaluable assets these extraordinary professionals represent. By welcoming such individuals, the US reinforces its cultural mosaic. It encourages a dynamic environment where innovation and creativity are paramount, further cementing its position as a global sector leader.
NAVIGATING THE O-1 VISA APPLICATION: A SHOWCASE OF DISTINCTION
The journey to secure an O-1 Visa is an exacting process that demands a meticulously curated dossier showcasing the applicant's extraordinary talents. Comedian and television host Trevor Noah's successful attainment of an O-1 Visa is a case in point, illustrating the level of distinction required for approval. Noah's application would have included evidence of his international awards, critical acclaim, and the significant influence of his comedic and literary works, exemplifying the caliber of achievement the O-1B visa recognizes. His journey from a South African comedian to a prominent TV host in the United States highlights the transformative power of the O-1 Visa for individuals who have reached the pinnacle of their careers internationally. Applicants must provide extensive documentation, such as evidence of original

Moreover, the applicants must demonstrate a clear intent to continue working in their area of extraordinary ability by presenting their employment offer within the US, which underscores the visa's role in acknowledging past achievements and fostering future innovation and excellence on American soil.

Exclusive Interview with ONAL GALLANT
STRATEGIC LEGAL INSIGHT: A CONVERSATION WITH ONAL GALLANT’S LEADING PARTNERS
From Legal Innovation to Global Expansion: The Vision and Strategy Behind Onal Gallant’s Success
By Sitki Kazanci
In this exclusive interview, we sit down with the founding partners of Onal Gallant, a law firm with a commanding presence in New York City, New Jersey, and Texas. Specializing in corporate and business law, real estate law, intellectual property, and immigration law, Onal Gallant has become a trusted legal advisor to businesses and individuals alike. The firm’s unique approach combines legal expertise with a deep understanding of client needs, providing holistic solutions that span multiple practice areas.
John S Onal, David F Gallant, and Aaron M Bayram share their insights on the firm’s origins, its strategic geographical presence, and how their diverse team and advanced technology are shaping the future of legal services. They also discuss the importance of early legal intervention, the impact of their partners’ government and big law experience,
and their aspirations for the firm’s growth and international expansion. This conversation offers a comprehensive look into how Onal Gallant is not just a law firm, but a forwardthinking partner in its clients’ success.
Could you enlighten us on the origins and founding story of Onal Gallant?
John S Onal: When we started, we realized there were not many Turkish-speaking law firms in the US practicing outside of immigration. Our goal was to cater to both individuals and businesses, addressing all their needs under one roof. We focused on the typical client: a person or businessman who migrated from Türkiye to the US, bringing either their family or business here. These clients needed company formation, trademark services, business agreements, investor visas, real estate assistance, and sometimes litigation support. Importantly, they needed someone who could communicate in their own language.
David F Gallant: We structured our practice areas based on the needs of a person or company wanting to move their business to the US. The primary needs were business law support, immigration assistance, trademark registration, and real estate services. These formed the main foundations of our practice initially. As our clients started doing more business in the US, we added litigation to our services.
With a presence in multiple states, what strategic advantages does this geographical spread offer Onal Gallant? Have you extended your reach internationally, particularly to countries like Türkiye?
John S Onal: Having offices across multiple states has been a game-changer for us. Each state has its own legal quirks, so being on the ground in New York, New Jersey, and Texas allows us to offer more comprehensive services to our clients. About half of our staff and attorneys are non-Turkish, which gives us broader networks in these states and allows us to bring more diverse perspectives to our work.
Aaron M Bayram: Regarding geographical advantage, New Jersey, New York, and Texas are among the top three states densely populated by Turkish Americans and their
businesses. These states are also major marketplaces appealing to Turkish exporters and businessmen. Most of the legal needs we address are centered in these three states.
Would you provide an overview of your team’s composition and areas of specialization? What qualities and expertise do you prioritize when recruiting new attorneys?
John S Onal: We have about 15 attorneys and a total of 60 people on the Onal Gallant team. Our areas of expertise include immigration (business, family, immigration litigation, and complex litigation), real estate, intellectual property, commercial litigation, personal injury, and family law. When hiring attorneys, we look for those who not only can do the legal work but can also handle clients well, manage expectations, and have good organizational and communication skills. We have a diverse team, including attorneys from various backgrounds such as Chinese American, Bosnian American, Egyptian American, Indian American, and American American attorneys. Our medium to long-term goal is to replicate what we have done for the Turkish community for other communities through these diverse attorneys.
How does the experience of your partners in US government roles and prestigious law firms influence Onal Gallant’s approach? In what ways does this background enhance the service you provide to clients?
John S Onal: When we identified the needs of our community from a holistic approach, we realized there was a significant need for business transactions expertise and complex immigration litigation support. We have filled these voids by bringing on partners with specific backgrounds. For instance, we have a partner who is a former federal prosecutor who was in charge of defending USCIS and representing USCIS and DHS for numerous years in the New Jersey Federal District. We also have a partner with over 20 years of experience in commercial litigation, and another who has over 10 years of experience in big law.
Aaron M Bayram: Our team consists of professional attorneys who have represented the government at the highest level as well as being involved in legal teams that represented multi-billion-dollar companies in the past. This diverse experience allows us to offer unique insights and strategies to our clients.
Onal Gallant emphasizes a holistic approach in its practice. Could you elaborate on the significance of this methodology and its benefits to your clients?
David F Gallant: The holistic approach of Onal Gallant involves addressing all aspects of a client’s legal needs under one roof. This methodology allows the firm to provide comprehensive services that cover the entire journey of their clients, from immigration to business setup, real estate acquisition, and ongoing legal support. The benefit to clients is that they have a single point of contact for all their legal needs, with attorneys who understand their background and can communicate in their language. This approach ensures continuity and efficiency in legal services, reducing the need for clients to seek multiple law firms for different aspects of their legal requirements.
Considering the recent surge in Turkish immigration to the US, what emerging trends have you observed in business immigration? Which visa categories are currently most sought-after by your Turkish clientele?
David F Gallant: We have observed several trends in business immigration, particularly with Turkish clients. The E-2 visa is very popular and suitable for small, mid-size, and big investors. We are also seeing increased interest from academics in green cards, particularly those available for individuals with extraordinary abilities. Professors from Türkiye often qualify for these types of visas. Additionally, people who have achieved significant success in media, sports, or entertainment can qualify for these green cards.
Another trend we are noticing is that Turkish companies are starting to open new branches in the US. This has led to an increase in L-1 Visa applications, which allow companies to transfer managers, specialty employees, technicians, and engineers to their US operations.
Your firm assists foreign investors and startups in establishing and expanding their US operations. What are the primary challenges these clients encounter, and how does Onal Gallant address these issues?
David F Gallant: The biggest challenge we see is adaptation. The business environment in the US is very different from Europe and Türkiye, and it takes time for our clients to adapt. Even if a company has a significant presence in Türkiye, it is often not enough when they are trying to establish themselves here. They face difficulties in areas like leasing property or securing financing from lenders.
We help address these issues in several ways. First, because of our diverse practice areas, we understand these struggles comprehensively and can prepare our clients for these challenges from the beginning. We also help give a strong impression to US counterparts by providing clear communication and explanation of all potential challenges. Our ability to
bridge the gap between Turkish and American business cultures is a significant asset in helping our clients navigate these challenges.
We have noticed that your website features an AI assistant offering roundthe-clock support. In what other ways is Onal Gallant harnessing advanced technology to enhance client services?
Aaron M Bayram: Technology is a big focus for us. Beyond our AI assistant, we have implemented secure client portals and we are using data analytics to provide more accurate estimates and timelines. It is all about increasing transparency and efficiency in how we serve our clients. Our AI tool allows clients to get instant answers to most of their questions without having to talk to someone in person, which fills a gap in the legal industry where it is often difficult to get quick access to simple questions.
John S Onal: We are constantly training our AI, though we always include a disclaimer that it is not legal advice.
Could you discuss the importance of engaging legal counsel at the earliest stages of a potential issue?
We understand that Onal Gallant has developed an app to facilitate access to legal services. How does this initiative address the need for prompt legal intervention, and what benefits does it offer to clients?
John S Onal: In America, engaging legal counsel early is crucial—it is like preventative healthcare for your business. If your contracts are drafted correctly from the start, you are already three steps ahead if a potential legal issue arises. One of our biggest priorities is ensuring clients can reach us quickly. Our attorneys answer calls at night and on weekends, even when our offices are closed.
To enhance this accessibility, we are creating an app where clients can get faster access to basic legal information. Through the app, they can securely message our team, easily schedule consultations, and ask our AI about any questions they might have. This allows clients
to get answers at the first sign of a potential issue, potentially preventing small problems from becoming large ones.
Looking ahead, what are Onal Gallant’s aspirations for growth and expansion? How do you envision the firm’s evolution over the next few years? Are there emerging areas of law that you are considering as potential new practice areas?
John S Onal: Our goal for the next five years is to become a 50-attorney law firm. We are expanding aggressively, looking into opening new offices in new markets, as well as adding a few other practice areas. About a year ago, we added personal injury to our services, and we are continuing to grow in that area.
David F. Gallant: We have had a presence in Texas since 2019, and we want to expand our presence there. We are also planning to open a new office in Virginia within the next two years.
John S Onal: We are also considering an office in California to better serve our West Coast clients.
Aaron M Bayram: We are dedicated to recruiting young talent and fostering strategic partnerships worldwide. This will propel our firm's vision of serving multinational corporations. The first step toward this goal is on the horizon, and our international office will be in Istanbul.

EB-5 VS. EB-2 NIW:
A GUIDE FOR TURKISH INVESTORS AND BUSINESS PEOPLE SEEKING GREEN CARD
The EB-5 Investor Visa offers a direct route to US permanent residency for foreign investors who meet specific financial and job creation requirements.
By David Fatih Gallant
As Turkish entrepreneurs increasingly look to the United States for growth and opportunity, navigating the pathway to permanent residency becomes essential. One popular temporary route is the E-2 visa, which offers a great opportunity to start a business and establish a presence in the US. However, after the initial years, many seek the coveted green card.
For successful entrepreneurs, whether in the US or planning to move, two prominent green card options often stand out: the EB-5 Immigrant Investor Visa and the EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW). Both offer unique advantages tailored to different profiles, making them appealing for Turkish nationals aiming to build a future in the United States.
EB-5 Investor Visa: A Pathway for Turkish Investors
The EB-5 Investor Visa offers a direct route to US permanent residency for foreign investors who meet specific requirements. Investors can take an active role by making a direct investment of $1,050,000 to establish a business that creates at least ten full-time jobs. Alternatively, they may opt for a passive investment by contributing $800,000 (in a Targeted Employment Area or TEA) or $1,050,000 (outside of a TEA) to projects sponsored by USCIS-approved Regional Centers. After the investment is made, the investor receives a conditional green card, which can be converted to permanent residency once the job creation requirements are met by the project sponsors.
One of the primary advantages is the relatively straightforward pathway to permanent residency. Unlike other visa categories that may have stringent requirements related to professional qualifications, exceptional ability, extraordinary ability, or sponsorship, the EB-5 program focuses primarily on the investor's financial commitment and ability to stimulate economic growth through job creation. Additionally, the program allows investors to include their immediate family members, including spouses and unmarried children under the age of 21, in their application. This provision enables families to relocate together and enjoy the benefits of living, working, and studying in the United States without the need for separate visa applications.
EB-2 National Interest Waiver (NIW): A Path to US Permanent Residency for Skilled Professionals and Entrepreneurs
The National Interest Waiver (NIW) under the EB-2 visa category offers a pathway to US permanent residency for individuals whose work in fields such as health, science, technology, finance, culture, education, or international relations benefits the national interest of the United States.
In addition to professionals, the NIW is available to entrepreneurs whose ventures are likely to bring substantial benefits to the country. To bypass the need for a job offer or labor certification, entrepreneurs must demonstrate that their business will significantly contribute to the US and that they are well-positioned to develop and advance their proposed endeavors.
The NIW for entrepreneurs offers flexibility by eliminating the labor certification requirement, making it a faster and more independent process. Unlike the EB-5 visa, which requires a significant upfront investment, entrepreneurs who start with smaller capital can qualify for the NIW green card as long as they can demonstrate their business's contributions to the US.
Conclusion: Making the Right Choice
Choosing between the EB-5 and EB-2 NIW visas depends on individual circumstances. The EB-5 visa is ideal for investors with sufficient net worth who want to obtain their green card quickly. On the other hand, the EB-2 NIW is better suited for entrepreneurs who may not meet the EB-5 investment threshold but are still successful in their businesses and positioned to make significant contributions to the US economy ■

My fight is strategic, intentional, and deeply rooted in my family’s journey— pain has become my greatest teacher.
Exclusive Interview with HELEN BUKULMEZ
FROM THE FIELDS OF TÜRKİYE TO
THE COURTROOMS OF AMERICA, FIGHTING FOR JUSTICE WITH UNWAVERING PASSION.
“Every injury case we take on is a chance to fight against injustice and stand up for the rights of the people.”
By Sitki Kazanci
Helen Bukulmez’s journey is one of relentless determination and resilience, shaped by her humble beginnings as a farmer’s daughter in Türkiye and her transition to becoming a formidable injury lawyer in the United States. Her story is not just about personal triumph; it is a testament to the power of perseverance, the pursuit of justice, and the commitment to making a difference in the lives of others. In this exclusive interview, Helen Bukulmez shares her experiences, challenges, and the driving forces behind her legal career and community involvement.
Can you share your childhood experiences growing up as a farmer’s daughter in Türkiye? How did your upbringing influence your career path? Growing up as a farmer’s daughter in Türkiye, I learned the value of hard work, resilience, and the importance of community. My law firm, MOMMA BEAR Injury Law, helps injured people across America fight insurance companies and seek justice. This work is deeply personal, rooted in my painful story, and driven by a profound passion.
My journey is of constant fighting, a trait passed down from my Bosnian father, whose family emigrated from Montenegro to Türkiye. Our surname in Türkiye was Pijuk, but after losing his parents and surviving the hardships of war, my grandfather, Muyo, changed our last name to Bukulmez. He raised nine children as farmers in Izmir, where I grew up without
modern conveniences like running water or electricity. My childhood was spent working on our farm, herding sheep, plowing fields, and selling produce at markets. Despite our wealth in land, we were often judged by those in the city, which fueled my determination to succeed academically and escape the life of a "lowly farmer."
Ironically, while we were wealthier, healthier, and happier than many city dwellers, their judgment ignited my passion for justice and equality. Time has proven that our values were far richer than those who looked down on us.
What motivated your move from Türkiye to the United States, and how did your early experiences as an immigrant shape your perspective on law and justice?
A deeply passionate love story drove my move to the United States and began a new chapter in my life. At 17, I found myself a divorced young mother, judged and ostracized even by my own family. My parents’ dreams of me pursuing higher education became my lifeline. I pursued a degree in Business and Economics from Uludağ University in Bursa, which opened doors to a career in HR. However, I quickly realized that my opportunities were limited without fluent English.
My journey to America was fueled by a desire to speak English fluently, inspired by the film Erin Brockovich. I was captivated by the idea of a world where a single mother could be respected and cherished, and I chased that dream to rural Kentucky in 2001.
Your educational background is quite diverse, with degrees from Türkiye and the US. How did your studies, particularly in Global Arbitration Law, prepare you for your legal career?
As a farmer’s daughter, I learned early that shortcuts do not exist in life, especially not
on a farm. This mindset carried over into my studies and career. When I came to America, I left everything behind, immersing myself fully in the culture, language, and legal system. I did not speak Turkish for years and focused entirely on mastering English and understanding American law.
During my studies, I fell in love with the American legal system despite its imperfections. A professor encouraged me to pursue law school, which seemed an impossible dream given my limited English skills. But as a farmer’s daughter, I do not quit. After failing the LSAT once, I persisted and was accepted
into law school, where I trained for bigger fights against the government and large corporations. Ironically, despite my initial disdain for personal injury law, a car accident in 2008 changed everything. My son was severely injured, and our experience transformed my career. Today, I am an American injury lawyer fighting for other families who have been hurt.
Could you tell us more about your law firm’s focus areas? How do you balance helping injured individuals seek justice with assisting immigrants to achieve their American Dream?
MOMMA BEAR Injury Law is a firm with experienced trial lawyers in all 50 states, dedicated to helping seriously injured people fight for justice. We partner with 73 American trial lawyers with over 20 years of litigation experience. I take a personal role in advocating for our Turkish-American clients, fighting with the same intensity and compassion I experienced as a young mother who nearly lost my son.
As the first and largest Turkish-American law firm focused exclusively on personal injury law, I am committed to providing resources and guidance through our Facebook platform, Amerika’da Haklarım ve Mutlu Hayat. Here, people can learn how to protect themselves with the right insurance and what to do if they are injured due to someone else’s negligence.
As an adjunct professor at NKU Chase College of Law, how do you approach teaching future lawyers about Marketing and Project Management? What do you hope your students take away from your classes?
In my classes, I teach marketing, project management, business planning, injury, and immigration law. My goal is to help students realize that their power comes from their pain. Embracing their own stories will make them stronger lawyers and individuals.
You are deeply involved in the Kentucky community and even running for the State Senate. What drives your passion for public service, and how do you see yourself contributing to the betterment of Kentucky?
All the pain in my life has been a gift. I have learned to face it head-on and ask, “What gifts have you brought?” This mindset has shaped my career and drives my passion for public service. Whether raising my son to be a top orthopedic surgeon, fighting for injured clients, or serving my community, I believe in using all my talents and experiences to make a more significant impact.
As an injury lawyer, I am constantly in front of juries, advocating for the rights of injured people. The problems and expectations in
our communities shape jury decisions, and it is essential to understand and protect these communities from the influence of decisive insurance companies. This fight is deeply personal to me, and I approach it with the ferocity of a MOMMA BEAR.
What message or advice would you like to share with our readers, particularly those aspiring to make a difference in their communities or professions?
My accomplishments are part of an ongoing fight, deeply influenced by my grandparents’ journey. If my grandfather could overcome unimaginable hardships to build a successful life in Türkiye, then my journey to America and pursuit of justice is a small step in comparison.
For everyone reading this, I encourage you to value yourself and take steps to protect your rights. Check your car insurance, learn about your rights, and remember that you are not alone if you or someone you know is injured. Contact us at MOMMA BEAR Injury Law, and we will fight for you with the same passion and determination that drives everything we do. Join our community on Facebook and take the first step in empowering yourself. ■

BUILDING YOUR AMERICAN DREAM:
THE E-2 VISA FOR TURKISH INVESTORS AND ENTREPRENEURS
The E-2 visa provides Turkish entrepreneurs with a flexible, renewable pathway to establish and grow their businesses in the US, offering opportunities to create and control their ventures.
By Fatih Furkan Bayraktar
Expanding a business into the United States or starting a new venture offers a world of opportunity for Turkish entrepreneurs and investors. The E-2 visa, designed for treaty investors, is one of the most accessible and practical routes for Turkish nationals to achieve this goal. This article will provide an indepth guide to the E-2 visa, covering everything from eligibility requirements to tips on making your application successful.
WHAT IS THE E-2 VISA?
The E-2 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows nationals from treaty countries, including Türkiye, to enter and work in the United States based on a substantial investment in a US business. This visa is highly flexible, allowing investors to create their own business, become a partner in an existing one, or invest in a franchise. Unlike other visa types, the E-2 visa does not require a fixed duration of stay, meaning as long as your business remains operational, you can renew your visa indefinitely.
WHO IS ELIGIBLE?
To qualify for an E-2 visa, you must meet several critical criteria:
● Nationality: You must be a citizen of a country with a commerce and navigation treaty with the United States. Türkiye qualifies under this treaty.
● Substantial Investment: The investment must be significant. Although there is no set minimum amount, the investment should be sufficient to ensure the successful operation of the business. Typically, this means an
investment of $100,000 or above, depending on the type of business.
● Active Business: Your investment must be in an active commercial enterprise. Only passive investments like real estate with business operations qualify.
● Control and Ownership: You must own at least 50% of the business and have operational control.
● Job Creation: While there’s no strict requirement on the number of jobs you need to create, your business should ideally employ US workers.
WHY CHOOSE THE E-2 VISA?
Flexibility is a significant advantage of the E-2 visa. Not only does it allow you, as the investor, to work for your own business, but it also provides benefits for your family. Your spouse will be granted unrestricted work authorization, giving them the freedom to work for any employer in the US, while your children can attend school without needing a separate visa. This combination of business opportunities and family benefits makes the E-2 visa particularly appealing for those looking to establish both their professional and personal lives in the US.
The E-2 visa offers several other advantages that make it an attractive option for Turkish entrepreneurs. Unlike other types of employment-based visas, the E-2 visa has no quota limits, meaning you won’t face long waiting times or complicated bureaucratic processes such as obtaining PERM certification from the Department of Labor.
Additionally, if you apply from Türkiye, the visa can be granted for up to five years, allowing you to travel freely between the US and Türkiye. If you apply from within the US through a change of status, it is typically granted for two years, but you will need to obtain a visa from the US embassy in Türkiye if you leave the US and wish to return.
STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL E-2 VISA APPLICATION
Securing an E-2 visa involves careful planning and a solid understanding of the application process. One of the key advantages of the E-2 visa is its flexibility. Whether you want to start your venture, become a partner in an existing
business, or buy into a franchise, the E-2 visa allows for these options. No set minimum investment amount is required, but a commonly recommended investment is around $100,000 or above. However, lower investments may also qualify if they pass the proportionality test. This test assesses whether your investment is substantial relative to the total cost of the business. For instance, a smaller investment may be acceptable if the business requires less capital to operate successfully.
A well-prepared business plan is essential for a successful E-2 visa application. Your business plan should clearly outline your business model, market analysis, financial projections, and job creation strategy. It is not just about having an idea; it is about showing how your business will contribute to the US economy. Additionally, gathering all necessary documentation is crucial. This includes proof of nationality, evidence of your investment, ownership structure, financial records, and any relevant contracts or leases. Choosing the right legal structure for your business, whether it is a Limited Liability Company (LLC) or Corporation, is also important as it provides liability protection and can make your business more attractive to investors.
TIPS FOR TURKISH ENTREPRENEURS
Start Small, Think Big: You do not need to start with a multi-million-dollar company to qualify for an E-2 visa. Many successful E-2 visa holders began with modest investments in food services, retail, and technology sectors. The key is to demonstrate that your business has the potential to grow and contribute positively to the US economy.
Work Professional, Work with a Professional: The E-2 visa offers great flexibility, but that
flexibility can be both a blessing and a curse. While you can invest in a wide range of businesses, this does not mean any application will be approved. A successful application requires a strong business plan, clear financial documentation, evidence of the legal source of funds, and well-articulated business goals. With these elements in place, you can get approved for all sorts of businesses, even creative or unusual ones like a food truck, trucking business, or Airbnb rental.
CONCLUSION
The E-2 visa is a unique opportunity for Turkish entrepreneurs and investors to establish a presence in the US. Whether you are looking to expand an existing business or start a new venture, the E-2 visa provides a flexible and renewable pathway to achieve your goals. By understanding the requirements and taking the right steps, you can turn your investment into a thriving business that secures your future in the US and contributes to the American economy. If you are considering applying for an E-2 visa, now is the time to start planning. With the right approach and professional guidance, you can successfully navigate the process and begin your journey as a Turkish entrepreneur in the US. ■

Exclusive Interview with DAVID SALTZMAN AND GUNAY EVINCH OF SALTZMAN & EVINCH PLLC
HOW DAVID SALTZMAN AND GUNAY EVINCH BUILT A LAW FIRM BRIDGING
US-TURKISH RELATIONS THROUGH EXPERTISE AND INTEGRITY
“Serving the Turkish American community has been the honor of a lifetime, and we are committed to making both America and Turkiye better.”
By Sitki Kazanci
In the complex world of international law, few firms stand out as distinctly as Saltzman & Evinch PLLC. Co-founded by David Saltzman and Gunay Evinch, this firm has spent decades fostering US-Turkish relations, representing their clients with unwavering dedication. What began as a friendship formed in law school has evolved into a dynamic partnership that has navigated the intricate terrains of public international law, earning a sterling reputation along the way. In this interview, David and Gunay reflect on their early years, the origins of their firm, and the principles that have guided their success.
Reflecting on your early years, could you share some insights into your childhood and how those experiences shaped your journey into law?
Each of us had active childhoods filled with curiosity and exploration. And law is a good profession for the curious as it sweeps in virtually all of human behavior, good and bad.
Your partnership has been remarkably successful. How did you first meet, and what inspired you to establish Saltzman & Evinch PLLC?
Our firm was, first and foremost, born out of a friendship. We met initially in law school and played in a band together. The idea for our firm took roots in the early 1990’s when David, who
was then at a large law firm in New York, visited Ankara, where I was doing research as a U Fulbright Scholar. We explored Turkiye, traveling by bus and dolmuş vans across the country, meeting the locals in the rural areas, and assessing the legal mission we were to undertake in representing all the people of Türkiye. We recognized the need for quality legal services that would support the growing political and commercial relations between the US and Türkiye.
Saltzman & Evinch PLLC has shaped a strong reputation in the legal community. Can you elaborate on your firm’s primary focus and what sets you apart from others in the field?
Our firm has focused on public international law, which delves into the legal rights of states as they engage with one another. In many instances states are treated as “persons” within the law, but very special persons to which special rules apply. We consider ourselves experts in these rules.
We also relish our work-enhancing business relationships between Türkiye and the US, serving companies on both sides of the Atlantic and helping them grow wisely. We believe we have been successful because we have never wavered from several basic principles: (1) Honesty with our clients—telling a client what he or she wants to hear makes for an easy meeting, but ultimately leads to worse outcomes; (2) Continual education and improvement—the law is hardly static and we enjoy staying up to date on developments in the legal environment and honing our skills accordingly; and, (3) It is about people, after all — a person’s livelihood and even sometimes liberty can be at stake when a legal matter arises. We feel the weight of this responsibility, which informs everything we do. Further, we enjoy interacting with people and helping them through some of the most stressful days of their lives.
Something priceless in what we provide
is loyalty and dedication. We work 24/7 with our specially trained legal team. We are available to our clients 24/7. We answer our phones. We provide written updates. We provide realistic advice.
The pandemic has transformed the way many businesses operate. You are about to open a new office next month in Washington, DC, with a ribboncutting ceremony. What can you tell us about the new location and how it aligns with your firm’s strategic goals? Our firm has always been a downtown DC firm. We are committed to providing this convenience. Recently, we purchased a historic DuPont Circle brownstone from the family of the celebrated Speaker of the House, Democrat Tip O’Neill, who coined the term, “All politics is local.” Our building was also used by First Lady Nancy Reagan’s astrological advisor. Our location offers some of the best restaurants and bars in DC. It is also in the center of Embassy Row. Tip’s spirit will be a reminder that both sides of the aisle need to work together; freedom is about responsible liberty, and democracy is about service by the people for the people.
As a firm with deep ties to the Turkish community, what message would you like to share with our readers, particularly those within the TurkishAmerican community?
Serving the Turkish American community has been the honor of a lifetime. In 1974, my parents tried to move back to Turkiye, but my father could not find a job. We returned to San Francisco. One evening, he gathered the family around the kitchen table. A man of few words, he said, “America is our new country. It is a good country. People let each other be. People respect each other. They stand in line. They wait at the red light. They stop at the Stop sign. If you work hard, you succeed. Love it. Make it even better. But never forget your motherland, and Atatürk.”
Legal landscapes are continuously evolving. How do you see the role of law firms like yours adapting in the next five years, especially in the context of global and digital challenges?
Artificial Intelligence is being used these days to write legal briefs and conduct other elements of the law. The results so far have been mixed and courts are struggling with how to address this robotic, mechanical innovation in what is ultimately a system meant to govern relations between humans. Our firm is adapting to this new landscape, as we continue to do our own research and writing. This helps us and court never lose focus on the importance of human relationships and the vital need to always understand the client’s goals.
Mentorship is often crucial in legal careers. Can you speak to the importance of mentorship in your careers and how you foster it within your firm?
We each had different mentors. David was trained in a large firm in New York, while my formative experiences were with a small firm in San Francisco who went after giants and won. Experience has taught us that a law
degree and passing the bar exam does not make a lawyer. There is no substitute for experience. We try to train our lawyers in-house, giving them as much real-world experience as possible, while also accepting a rotating group of younger interns most summers.
Many Turkish law students contact us. We give about a dozen informational interviews each year. For those who aim to practice law in America, a three-year Juris Doctor (JD) degree is strongly advised. A good JD education teaches fast and comprehensive reading, objective analysis, and excellent writing and speaking skills.
Finally, looking back at your journey together, what are some of the proudest moments or cases that define Saltzman & Evinch PLLC’s achievements?
Our legal lives have been a constant stream of proud movements. We have served the Republic of Türkiye as General Counsel and litigation attorneys for 30 years. Our reputation is one of loyalty and dedication. We have represented Türkiye in the federal courts for 30 years and won every case arising from 1974 Cyprus Peace Operation, Armenian allegation of genocide, and terrorism by ASALA, JCAG and PKK/YPG. At times we have been the subject of threats upon our lives and our families.
But there is nothing like helping the down trodden. We helped the widow of a journalist who was killed by Assad while reporting for a US news agency in Syria. We also represented a scholar who was a Holocaust survivor who was defamed by a US magazine because of his legal critique of Armenian claims. We made sure our clients found swift and complete justice. We represented a Turkish family whose restaurant was ransacked in a hate crime.
We are forever grateful to our spouses and children who have unflinchingly stood by our sides during our legal journey. ■

SECURING THE FUTURE: THE IMPORTANCE OF RETAINING IMMIGRANT STUDENT TALENT IN THE US
Retaining international graduates is key to sustaining US economic leadership, as their expertise fuels new technologies, startups, and industry breakthroughs.
By Muhammed Üzüm
The landscape of the US economy is linked to the continuous flow of intellectual capital. Undoubtedly, most of that capital is sourced from the international student community. These students, who journey to the United States to pursue higher education, particularly in science and engineering, are a cornerstone of the country's leadership in innovation and economy. The impact of these graduates extends far beyond academic achievements. They shape industries and empower the nation toward a prosperous future. As a business immigration attorney, I have observed firsthand the transformative effects such talent can have on businesses
and the broader economy. Henceforth, it is essential to discuss the innumerable benefits of retaining immigrant students’ post-graduation and endorse US policies that encourage them to build their careers here.
The Value of International Students to US Higher Education
International students are key actors in the US academic system. They bring with them not only diverse perspectives that enhance the learning environment, but also contribute greatly to the financial stability and reputation of educational institutions. In that regard, a policy brief published in August 2021 by the National Foundation for American Policy (NFAP) highlights that the presence of these
students is particularly evident in graduate programs, where they often outnumber their US counterparts. This is especially true in technical fields that are fundamental to the nation's global economic position, such as electrical engineering and computer science. When taking a close look, their financial impact is especially substantial as they pay tuition at rates that are often higher than American citizens. This helps universities have a sustainable income source and enables the continuation of high-quality research programs. For instance, income obtained via their tuition payments supports faculty positions, research grants, and infrastructure improvements, which in turn benefits US students too. Furthermore, the exchange of ideas between
domestic and international students fosters a dynamic intellectual environment that enriches all participating with an open and competitive mindset.
However, the value of foreign intellect is not limited to their tenure in academia. Upon graduation, these individuals are equipped with specialized knowledge and skills that are in high demand by US businesses. Retaining them is vital for maintaining the United States' leadership specifically in the areas of innovation, technology, and education for driving forward future research and development efforts in various sectors.
Bridging the Skills Gap: Immigrant Graduates and the Workforce
Immigrant graduates are a critical component in bridging the skills gap faced by many US industries. With a significant number of domestic students avoiding advanced degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields, talents from abroad stand ready to fill these roles. According to a different policy brief by the NFAP titled "The Importance of International Students to American Science and Engineering" (October 2017), the expertise of these graduates closely aligns with the needs of sectors foundational to the US economy and experiencing quality employee shortages.
In my professional experience, businesses consistently express the lack for highly skilled workers who can navigate the complexities of today's technology-driven environment. Foreign students often offer unique viewpoints that fuel creativity and forward-thinking within organizations. Moreover, their global background and multilingual capabilities are invaluable assets in an increasingly interconnected marketplace. By employing these graduates, businesses can ensure a steady pipeline of talent that is indispensable for protecting a competitive edge.
The retention of such bright prospects has a direct correlation with employment creation. As these individuals integrate into the workforce, they fill existing positions and create new jobs by starting their own businesses and diversifying economic activity. Their entrepreneurial ventures can lead to the birth of novel industries and improve existing ones, further solidifying the role of immigrants in the economic landscape.

Retaining International Talent: The Economic Impact
The economic impact of retaining international graduates in the United States is profound. These individuals help grow the economy not only through their labor but also through innovation and entrepreneurship. The transfer of their skills into the US paves ways for the introduction of new technologies, patents, and startups that stimulate economic growth.
Additionally, they are often at the forefront of research and development in critical & emerging industries such as artificial intelligence, renewable energy, biotechnology, and more. Their work leads to breakthroughs that can reshape industries and elevate the quality of life for millions. Moreover, as these graduates establish themselves professionally, they contribute to the tax base and support public services, enhancing the fiscal health of the nation (NFAP, August 2021).
It is vital to understand that the retention of these graduates is not just a matter of employment; it is about investing in the future of the US economy. Policies that facilitate the transition from student visas to work visas and eventually to permanent residency are essential for
realizing the full potential of this talent pool. By providing clear and accessible pathways for these graduates to remain in the country, the US can benefit from their skills and drive long-term economic prosperity.
Policy and the Future Ahead
The current US immigration system offers various pathways for international students to participate in the workforce. They include programs such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT), Optional Practical Training (OPT), and STEM OPT, which grant students workpermits with varying duration. Besides these programs, employment visas like the H-1B allows fresh graduates to start working legally in the US uninterrupted. However, these pathways are often hard to access with challenges and uncertainties that demotivate graduates from remaining in the country. As a business immigration lawyer, I advocate for reforms that streamline these processes and provide clarity for both graduates and employers.
As the NFAP’s policy brief (October 2017) states; expanding the OPT program, increasing the cap on H-1B visas, and creating a direct route to permanent residency for graduates
with advanced degrees from US institutions are steps that can significantly improve retention rates. Additionally, policies that recognize the contributions of these individuals and ease their integration into the US workforce are crucial. This includes measures that support dual intent for student visas, allowing individuals to plan for a future in the United States from the outset of their studies.
Collaboration between policymakers, educational institutions, and the business community is key to developing a strategic approach to immigration that benefits all stakeholders. By building an environment that welcomes and supports international talent, the US can ensure its continued leadership in innovation and economic strength ■

NAVIGATING TURBULENT TIMES: EMPOWERING TURKISH ENTREPRENEURS AMIDST REGIONAL CHALLENGES
By actively supporting Turkish entrepreneurs, we can help them navigate financial restrictions, find new opportunities, and continue to innovate.
By Esra Talu
In the heart of the United States, where the vibrant Turkish community thrives, we find ourselves reflecting on the tumultuous state of the MENA region. The ongoing conflicts and tensions have not only brought distress to the region but cast shadows over Türkiye's economic landscape. As a tech entrepreneur, daughter, sister, and mother, I believe in the power of unity and resilience. Today, I
want to share a message of hope and empowerment for our Turkish entrepreneurs facing these challenging times.
The Ripple Effect of Regional Conflicts Wars and conflicts in the MENA region inevitably have a ripple effect that reaches far beyond the immediate borders. Türkiye, with its strategic location and deep economic ties to the region, is significantly impacted. Financial markets become volatile, foreign investments
waver, and local businesses face heightened uncertainties. Yet, in these challenging times, the spirit of entrepreneurship can shine the brightest.
Resilience and Innovation: The Hallmarks of Turkish Entrepreneurs
Despite the financial restrictions and economic instability, Turkish entrepreneurs have consistently demonstrated remarkable resilience and innovation. The startup ecosystem in
Türkiye is burgeoning, filled with talented individuals who are not afraid to dream big and tackle challenges head-on. However, the path forward requires more than just resilience—it requires strategic support and collective effort.
Strategic Support for Turkish Startups
Access to Global Networks: One of the most critical elements for Turkish startups is access to global networks. Turkish communities in the USA can play a pivotal role here. By leveraging their connections and resources, they can help Turkish entrepreneurs gain access to international markets, investors, and mentors. Financial Aid and Grants: Navigating financial difficulties often means seeking alternative funding sources. Various international grants and aid programs are available for startups. Our communities can assist by providing information, guidance, and even direct financial support to promising ventures.
Mentorship and Guidance: Experienced professionals in our diaspora can offer invaluable mentorship to young entrepreneurs. Sharing knowledge, experiences, and lessons learned can help startups avoid common pitfalls and accelerate their growth.
Moving Forward: A Unified Message
As we look toward the future, it is crucial to remember the strength found in unity. As a tech entrepreneur, I have witnessed the transformative power of technology and innovation firsthand. Yet, as a daughter, sister, and mother, I am also profoundly aware of the human aspect—our need for peace, stability, and cooperation.
Embracing Peace and Innovation
Our response to conflict should be one of creativity and collaboration. We must stand united against the backdrop of wars, advocating for peace and stability. By fostering an environment of support and encouragement, we can help Turkish startups survive and thrive.
The Role of the Turkish Community in the USA
Our community in the USA has a unique role to play. We are bridges between cultures, economies, and ideas. By actively supporting Turkish entrepreneurs, we can help them navigate financial restrictions, find new opportunities, and continue to innovate. Using our collective
INNOVATE, INSPIRE, AND LEAD
strength, we can uplift our homeland, ensuring that Türkiye remains a beacon of entrepreneurship and innovation in the region.
A Call to Action
In conclusion, I call upon every member of our Turkish community to embrace this mission. It is time to support our entrepreneurs, advocate for peace, and work toward a future where innovation and collaboration triumph over conflict. Together, we can create a resilient, thriving ecosystem that not only withstands the challenges of today but also paves the way for a prosperous tomorrow.
Let us unite in our efforts, guided by hope and driven by the unyielding spirit of Turkish entrepreneurship. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and dreams into reality. ■
“I MISS IT ALREADY.” PRESCRIPTION FOR POST-SUMMER TÜRKIYE TRIP BLUES
As summer ends and you return from Türkiye, remember that your true homeland is within yourself, shaping your own story wherever you are.
By Burcin Ogrenir, PhD
Summer is nearing its end, and many of you are returning from your Türkiye vacation. Maybe you fully immersed yourself in the Mediterranean air, water, and sand or reconnected with loved ones as if time had stood still. It was a visit
patiently dreamed of throughout the winter, and now it is over. Some of you might be returning with a heavy feeling of reluctance, struggling to leave the memories of Türkiye behind and to find America appealing again. For some, what life offers in America can only mean so much.
But that persistent division between two
continents, those nagging questions like “What am I doing in America? Is it worth it?” challenge our existence. The weddings, births, and significant moments we miss—the feelings that strike some of us like a debt owed to our loved ones back home, for others a sense of inadequacy in this never-ending journey of rebuilding life in America, and still others as a deep, painful longing too hard to accept. All these are parts of living far away, whether by choice or obligation.
Whether you have been away from home for two years or twenty, these feelings do not necessarily fade; in fact, they can intensify. So, when you find yourself asking again, “What am I doing here?” the difference between answering with “living” and “waiting for the next summer” lies in realizing that your true homeland is, first and foremost, within yourself.
Instead of dwelling on what you have left behind, focus on enriching your life here and now—write a compelling story of existence beyond the identity of "expat."
Nothing is a cure, a solution, or an answer. In this unique experience of being “human,” you write your own story, and you are the one who assigns meaning to your life. You can start by taking a deep breath, beginning to exist entirely, building friendships, creating a chosen family of trusted ones, and more—right here where you live. Or you can keep comparing life here and there, repeatedly telling yourself how miserable you are. In this scenario, each return from Türkiye to America and back again will only serve as an excuse for the anxieties, loneliness, and postponements you carry like a heavy burden. And thus, the years will pass.
Yet, surrender is also part of taking the pen into your own hands. It does not happen overnight, and it may not always stay with you. However, it is your best ally in managing that “constant feeling of incompleteness” inherent in the psychology of exile. Welcome back. Let another year begin with autumn, leaves, and daily routines.
This year, write a more compelling story of existing, enriching your life, and living beyond being a product of your surroundings—in this case, stop hiding behind the identity of “an expat or a newcomer living in America.” Shape your reality; it is time to leave behind the narratives that keep you lagging. This is not a performance show or a competition. It is about equipping your life with whatever it offers and being content with it because it is your creation. What magic! May these be the best, most fruitful, and most calming seasons. ■

3. AI in Predictive Analytics
TOP 5 AI INNOVATIONS
SIMPLIFYING LIFE AND BUSINESS
AI-powered virtual assistants are now more intuitive than ever, automating daily tasks and freeing up time for strategic activities.
By Sitki Kazanci
Artificial Intelligence (AI) has rapidly evolved, bringing transformative technologies that simplify personal and business life. Here are five of the latest AI technologies that are making life and work easier:
1. Generative AI Tools
Generative AI, like OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Bard, has revolutionized content creation, customer service, and brainstorming processes. These tools can generate text, images, and even code, assisting businesses in developing marketing content, answering customer queries, and accelerating
project development. For individuals, generative AI can provide creative assistance in writing, designing, and even learning new concepts.
2. AI-Powered Virtual Assistants
Virtual assistants such as Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple’s Siri have become indispensable for daily tasks. These AI-driven assistants are now more intuitive, from scheduling meetings and setting reminders to controlling smart home devices and answering complex queries. In business settings, AI assistants are integrated with workflow management tools to automate administrative tasks, allowing professionals to focus on more strategic activities.
Predictive analytics tools powered by AI are helping businesses make data-driven decisions by forecasting trends and customer behavior. Tools like IBM Watson and Salesforce Einstein analyze vast data to provide actionable insights, helping companies optimize their marketing strategies, inventory management, and customer engagement. In personal finance, AI-driven apps predict spending patterns, assisting users to manage their budgets more effectively.
4. AI-Powered Chatbots

EAT LIKE A TURK
FROM MESOAMERICA TO GLOBAL FAME: THE JOURNEY OF THE TOMATO
Once unknown in Europe, the tomato has transformed from a Mesoamerican delicacy into a global culinary staple, with China leading production and Türkiye ranking fifth worldwide.
By Ercument Akman
Long ago, tomatoes were believed to be best when eaten in hotter countries, such as Mesoamerica, where the fruit originated. The Aztecs ate the tomato as early as 700 AD and called it the “tomato” (its name in Nahuatl), but it was not grown in Britain until the 1590s. In the early 16th century, Spanish conquistadors returning from expeditions in Mexico and other parts of Mesoamerica were thought to have first introduced the seeds to southern Europe.
Today, tomatoes are known as one of the most genetically modified species. Many of today's tomato varieties are obtained from hybridization, so they can vary in taste, such as being less sweet or larger. China is the country that produces the most tomatoes in the world, while Türkiye is in fifth place with an annual production of 13 tons.
Tomatoes are a food that many Ottoman rulers who left their mark on history have never tasted or even known of its existence.
Nobody quite knows how—some think the Sephardic Jews, expelled from Spain in 1492, could have brought it with them. Or maybe it made its way over with Eleanor of Toledo, who came to Florence when she married the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Cosimo I de’ Medici, in 1539.
In 1539, Cosimo married the Spanish noblewoman Eleanor of Toledo (1522 – 1562), the daughter of Don Pedro Álvarez de Toledo, the Spanish viceroy of Naples.
So, how did it take over the world? From Naples, tomato-eating gradually spread over the Spanish-dominant parts of Italy and beyond, says Del Soldato—although you will still find fewer tomatoes in northern regions.
Records of palace expenditures in the early 18th century show that small amounts were brought to the palace.

THE RISE AND FALL OF THE HAMIDIEH HIPPODROME:
OTTOMAN SPECTACLE AT THE 1893 WORLD’S FAIR
From Damascus to Chicago, the Hamidieh Hippodrome showcased the grandeur of Ottoman culture but faced a series of misfortunes that led to its downfall.
By Mehmet Ali Munir
After inviting Ottoman ruler Abdul Hamid II to participate in The World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, the Empire saw an opportunity. It brokered a public-private joint venture to control the use of her cultural image. The committees decided that the empire could participate and impact by using the diversity of its peoples and territories.
The results included plays by the Qabbani troupe from Damascus, a folk dancing troupe from Mount Lebanon, and musical performances from Beirut's cafés presented at the Odeon Theatre. The successful Midway "Turkish Village" included an artisanal souq from Damascus in the Turkish Bazaar and a series of Turkish-style buildings, including a mosque.
An unsolicited proposal came from the son of a respected agricultural merchant, Raji Bek Sayqali, an Akkan nobility from Palestine with good connections with Bedouin Arab tribes. He offered to recreate a show of battle tribes inspired by Arabic folklore with purebred Arabian horses in a vast arena.
The concession approved with an “irade” from the Sultan made a sensation in the Empire. In less than two days, Lebanese Syrian businesspeople raised 25,000 Turkish liras ($112,000) from Constantinople, Beirut, Paris, and Egypt. Raji agreed that he would retain his position as project director after they established a joint company headed by journalist Khalil Sarkis.1
To sponsor the exhibition, 45 Arabian horses were bought in Syria by special arrangement with Abdul Hamid II, who gave Raji two purebred horses from his stables
and two of his horsemen to train Bedouin riders in Western horsemanship. The Hamidie Hippodrome Company was ready to gallop.
The board offered Raji cash on the spot, trip money, and expenses for six months. He proudly refused but remained with the company as director.
The project was truly an ambitious undertaking. Apart from the expensive purchase of desert horses, transporting the 45 horses, 12 camels, 7 donkeys, 3 sheep, and 6 Saluki dogs used by nomadic tribes to run down game, tribal horsemen, stablemen, dancers, musicians, actors, seven cooks, five veterinarians, 15 writers, ticket sellers carrying 1.5 million entry tickets, priced at $1 each, and the company shareholders requiring a dedicated ship.
General cargo ship Cynthiana, a new steel screw steamer recently built in 1891, left the port of Jounieh, Lebanon, in late March 1893. After a Gibraltar stopover, the whole company arrived in New York in late April.
Troubles were already waiting as soon as they landed. The US Customs authorities quickly levied a duty of $30 on each horse, claiming that they did not belong to breeds exempted in the McKinley tariff law, while many nations brought their horses duty-free. Eleven horses had recorded pedigrees. After their arrival in Chicago, the commissioner general could not be persuaded to make an application for a refund, and the documents were never forwarded to Washington.
“They arrived in Chicago penniless. They had hardly settled and pitched their tents at the baseball grounds before one Chicago load shark loaned them money at an exorbitant interest rate and took a mortgage on all they had: horses, donkeys, camels, tents, and apparel. Another individual had himself hired as manager of the show at an enormous salary with an iron-clad contract. Still another made a contract to become the corporation's attorney at $600 a month salary. All this happened within the short space of 30 hours after their arrival.” 2
More disaster struck when they moved to Garfield Park. They lost seven horses, some of the camels and 15 trunks of clothing to an unfortunate incendiary fire on the fairgrounds
for an estimated loss of $44,000. The most valuable horses were casualties, including the $10,000 Stallion Al-Dabran, loaned from the stables of Sultan Abdul Hamid. II.
Finally, they moved to Midway for their first performance, advertised as the $3 million Hamidieh Hippodrome Co., on the Fourth of July, 1893. The horse and camel races were a
smash hit for the American audience. Buffalo Bill Cody, of the Wild West shows that traveled across the US and the world, was most captivated by the show. He wanted to incorporate Arabian horses in his performance as he re-enacted battles with the Indigenous peoples of the Americas and acquired five of the Bedouins' horses.
IT HAPPENED HERE
Despite its tragic end, the Hamidieh Hippodrome left a lasting legacy, introducing Arabian horses to America and transforming the country’s equestrian traditions forever.
The End of Hamidieh
Hippodrome Co.
The "Wild East Show" was one of the famous World’s Fair enterprises with various striking features and was well attended yet ended financially unsuccessful. The exhibition did not begin at the Fair in time to fully retrieve the company's expenses.
“The administrative team lacked familiarity with American laws and the business practices prevalent in Chicago at the time. Problems arose between team members, and they received misguided advice from American lawyers. It meant the company tragically lost all its horses to pawnbrokers in Chicago.” 2
A series of disasters caused the company's financial ruin even after auctioning the 28 horses, with Raji ending up penniless. The Turkish government eventually paid for his passage back home.
Arabian Horse Club of America
The only bright spot of this mesmerizing show was how it forever changed horsemanship in
America by introducing Arabian stallions and mares to the country.
The horses displayed in the arena caused American and British horse owners to hatch plots and conspiracies to seize the horses.
“Western horse breeders, who exploited a lack of familiarity with American laws among the horsemen to trick them out of their cherished livestock and the beautiful horses were eventually sold, many of them remaining in Chicago. Only three mares of the entire group would be allowed to breed.
In 1894, Peter Bradley purchased the mares Galfia and Pride. The third mare, *Nejdme, was purchased by Randolf Huntington from Oyster Bay, New York, and J.A.P. Ramsdell from New York.” 2
As a result, the Arabian Horse Club of America was established in the US, and the mare Nijma (Star) from the Kehilan-Ajuz breed and the stallion Obeyran were registered as the first two horses in the official records of Arabian horses in America.
The US now boasts over half a million purebred Arabian horses, with the majority tracing their lineage back to the noble steeds of these fine horses.3 ■

THE 31ST INTERNATIONAL ASPENDOS OPERA AND BALLET FESTIVAL
What can be more thrilling than watching a masterpiece opera or ballet on a stage that was constructed 20 centuries ago?
By Erol Güler
The 15th International Istanbul Opera and Ballet Festival started on June 1 with the opera "The Flying Dutchman," staged by the Istanbul State Opera and Ballet at the Atatürk Cultural Center—Atatürk Kültür Merkezi (AKM). The Flying Dutchman is Richard Wagner's masterpiece. The work was staged by the famous German Director Sebastian Welker. Dutch baritone Martijn Sanders stars in the leading role as Der Holländer. If you are not a fan of classical opera and ballet but will be in Antalya in September, there is a wonderful opportunity to combine a visit to the splendid and famous Aspendos Amphitheater (a Roman theater built in the 2nd century and is one of the best preserved ancient theaters of the Greco-Roman world) and watch one of the wonders of classical entertainment. Music experts say that not all operas are suitable for starting an interest in opera. Of course, there may be love at first sight even when listening to the most complex opera in the world, but surely there are
more suitable operas that could help novices who want to enter this genre to get used to new sounds. Luckily, in this year’s Aspendos Opera and Ballet festival, there are two operas that experts count as the 5 top operas suggested for newcomers. 1) Giacomo Puccini's Tosca. Tosca has everything: powerful music, an exciting story, and a tragic ending. 2) Aida by Giuseppe Verdi, whose triumphal march is known by everyone. Also the ballet Swan Lake is in the memories of everyone, when not from live performance, then definitely from movies. Having said this, all the scheduled performances are such masterpieces that I enjoy watching and listening time after time.
AIDA
On the 13th of September, Aida will be performed by the Ankara – Antalya State Opera and Ballet. The director will be Vincenzo Grisostomi Travaglini and the conductor will be Lorenzo Castriota. Aida is a tragic opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi telling the story of eternal love. Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, it was commissioned by Ismail Paşa, the
Ottoman Hidiv of Egypt. It was commissioned to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal and had its premiere there on 24 December 1871. Today the work holds a central place in the operatic canon, receiving performances every year around the world. At New York's Metropolitan Opera alone, Aida has been sung more than 1,100 times since 1886.
The story is about the love between Aida and Radames. Radames is a young warrior and is chosen as the Egyptian commander to fight the Ethiopians. Radames dreams both of gaining victory on the battlefield and of Aida, an Ethiopian slave with whom he is secretly in love. Aida, who is also secretly in love with Radames, is the captured daughter of the Ethiopian King Amonasro, but her Egyptian captors are unaware of her true identity. Her father has invaded Egypt to deliver her from servitude.
Amneris, the daughter of the Egyptian King loves Radames, but fears that his heart belongs to someone else. She suspects that Aida could be her rival. Aida feels torn between her love for her father, her country, and Radames.
Radames returns victoriously. However, Amneris still doubts Radames love and wonders whether Aida is in love with him. Amneris falsely tells Aida that Radames has died in the battle. In grief, shocked by the news, Aida confesses that her heart belongs to Radames eternally. This confession fires Amneris with rage, and she plans on taking revenge on Aida.
The Ethiopian captives are led in chains, the King and Aida’s father, Amonasro, among them. Aida immediately rushes to her father, who whispers to her to conceal his true identity as King of Ethiopia from the Egyptians. Aida, Amonasro, and the captured Ethiopians plead with the Egyptian King for mercy, but the Egyptian priests calls for their death
Also Radames pleads to spare the lives of the prisoners and to set them free. The King grants Radames his wish, and declares that Radames will marry Amneris and be his successor. At the priest’s suggestion to the King, Aida and Amonasro remain as hostages to ensure that the Ethiopians do not avenge their defeat.
Amonasro orders Aida to find out the location of the Egyptian army from Radames. Aida, torn between her love for Radames and her loyalty to her native land and to her father, reluctantly agrees. Radames affirms that he will marry Aida and Aida convinces him to flee to the desert with her.
To make their escape easier, Radames proposes that they use a safe route without any fear of discovery and reveals the location where his army has chosen to attack. Upon hearing this, Amonasro comes out of hiding and reveals his identity. Radames realizes, to his extreme dismay, that he has unwittingly revealed a crucial military secret to the enemy. At the same time, Amneris sees Radames with the enemy and calls for the guards. Amonasro draws a dagger, intending to kill Amneris, but Radames disarms him, quickly orders him to flee with Aida, and surrenders himself to the guards as Aida and Amonasro run off. The guards arrest him as a traitor.
Amneris desires to save Radames. She asks Radames to deny the accusations, but Radames, who does not wish to live without Aida, refuses. He is relieved to know Aida is
still alive and hopes she has reached her own country.
Radames is condemned to death as a traitor. The priests sentence him to be buried alive. Radames is taken into a dark vault, where he thinks that he is alone. As he hopes that Aida is in a safer place, he hears a sigh and then sees Aida. She has hidden herself in the vault in order to die with Radames.
Prince Igor
Prince Igor will be performed the evening of 16th September by the Ankara State Opera and Ballet. It will be directed by İlya İlyin and the orchestra will be conducted by Rustam Rahmedov. The opera was composed by Aleksandr Borodin. Borodin was born in 1833 in St. Petersburg, Russia, and died in 1887. He was a major Russian composer of the 19th century. He was also a notable scientist for his research on aldehydes. Borodin’s father was a Georgian prince and he was raised in comfortable circumstances. His gift for languages and music was evident early on but he studied at the Medico-Surgical Academy, specializing in chemistry, and received a doctorate. He later became full professor at the Medico-Surgical Academy. In addition to his research and teaching, he helped found medical courses
for women. Throughout his life, he continued composing music pieces like the Symphony No. 1 in E-flat Major; Symphony No. 2 in B Minor; the unfinished Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, and his tone poem In the Steppes of Central Asia. In 1869, he began work on his operatic masterpiece, Prince Igor (completed posthumously by Rimsky-Korsakov and Aleksandr Glazunov).
Prince Igor gathers his army for a campaign against the Cumans/Polovtsy (known in Türkiye as Kıpçak Türkleri) and their Khans who have previously attacked the Russian lands. A solar eclipse takes place and although Yaroslavna, Igor's wife, takes the eclipse for a bad omen, Igor insists that honor demands that he go to war. He leaves her to the care of her brother, Prince Galitsky, who tells of his gratitude to Igor for sheltering him after he was banished from his own home by his father and brothers.
Galitsky and his men abduct a young woman who pleaded to be allowed to return to her father without being dishonored. Galitsky says that if he were Prince of Putivl, he would drink and feast all day while dispensing judgment and have the prettiest maidens with him all night. A group of young women beg the prince to restore their abducted

friend. He threatens them and drives them away. People wonder what might happen if Yaroslavna hears of what happens, but then realize she would be helpless with all her men gone to war. They sing of how they are all drunkards and are supported by Galitsky. The men decide to go to the town square to declare Galitsky the Prince of Putivl Yaroslavna is alone worrying about why she has not heard from Igor and his companions. The nurse brings in the young women who tell Yaroslavna of their abducted friend. They are reluctant at first to reveal the culprit but eventually name Galitsky and talk of how he and his drunken followers cause trouble around Putivl. Galitsky enters and the women run away. Yaroslavna questions him as to the truth of their story and he mocks her saying she should treat him as a guest in her house. She threatens him with what Igor will do on his return, but Galitsky replies that he can seize the throne whenever he wants. Yaroslavna accuses him of repeating the betrayal that he carried out against their father, but he replies that he was only joking and asks if she has a lover now her husband is away. She threatens him with sending him back to their father. He replies that he will return the girl but will take another later and leaves. The council of boyars arrive to inform Yaroslavna that the Polovtsy under Khan Gzak are about to attack Putivl. Igor's army has been utterly destroyed and he has been wounded and
captured with his son and brother. After a moment of faintness, Yaroslavna orders messengers sent to the city's allies, but the Boyars report that the roads are cut, some towns are in revolt, and their princes will be captured. The Boyars say that they will organize the defense but Galitsky returns with his followers to demand that a new Prince be chosen. The boyars refuse. The argument is interrupted by the sight of flames and the sound of crying women. Some of the boyars flee; some join the battle, others guard the Princess. They call the attack God's judgment.
The Russian prisoners arrive from their day's work and express their gratitude when fed by Konchakovna and the maidens. Vladimir, son of Igor, sings of his hope that his love will soon join him now that the day is fading. His love is Konchakovna. She comes and the two sing of their love and their desire to marry. While her father will consent to the marriage, they know that his will not. They part when they hear Igor coming. He sings of his disgrace and torment at being captured with his followers dead. Only his wife, he feels, will be loyal. He hopes for the chance to regain his honor. Ovlur urges Igor to escape and the prince agrees to think about it. Khan Konchak asks him if all is well and he replies that the falcon cannot live in captivity. Konchak says that as Igor did not ask for mercy he is not a prisoner but an honored guest equal to a Khan. Konchak offers Igor freedom if he will
promise not to wage war on him again, but he refuses saying he cannot lie. Konchak regrets that they were not born to be allies. They would then have captured all of Russia. The Polovtsian army returns in triumph singing the praise of Khan Gzak. Igor and his son Vladimir have their worst fears confirmed by the new captives. Vladimir and the other prisoners urge Igor to escape, but he is at first reluctant, singing of his shame and saying that it is the duty of the other Russian princes to save the homeland. Ovlur now arrives to say that he has prepared horses for Igor and Vladimir and Igor now agrees to escape. The distressed Konchakovna comes, challenging Vladimir to show his love by either taking her with him or by staying. Igor urges his son to come, but Vladimir feels unable to leave Konchakovna who threatens to wake the camp. Eventually Igor flees alone and Konchakovna sounds the alarm. She and her father refuse to let the Polovtsy kill Vladimir. Instead Konchak orders the death of the guards and marries Vladimir to his daughter. As for Igor, Konchak thinks more of him for his escape.
Yaroslavna sees two riders in the distance who turn out to be Igor and Ovlur. The two lovers sing of their joy of being reunited and of the expectation that Igor will lead the Russians to victory against the Khan. The crowd learns that Igor has returned and the boyars are loyal followers of the true prince and not Galitsky. All joyously celebrate Igor's return.
Swan Lake
The Swan Lake Ballet will be performed on the 20th of September. The conductor will be Tolga Taviş and the choreography will be done after M. Petiva - L. Ivanov by Volkan Ersoy and armağan Davran. The guest artists, Maria Khoreva and Philip Stepin will be accompanied by the Izmır State Opera and Ballet and the orchestra of the Antalya State Opera and Ballet. Composed by Pyotr Ilyiç Çaykovski in 1876, Swan Lake is by far the most famous ballet, featuring one of the art form’s most iconic roles and music. In popular culture, swans and ballet have become nearly synonymous in the imagination.
Princess Odette is taking a walk alone by a lake when the evil black magician Von Rothbart appears and, before Odette can escape, transforms her into a swan.
Prince Siegfried is turning twenty-one and his mother tells him it is time to get married. He goes hunting and the swan he sees turns out to be Odette, who transforms back into a woman right as he is about to shoot. He is fascinated. She tells him her whole sad story: swan during the day, woman at night. But there is a way out—if a man promises his love and remains faithful, the curse will be broken, and Odette and all her friends will be free. Siegfried jumps on the opportunity and declares his love. At daybreak, Odette returns to her swan form and Siegfried heads off to his mom’s party with a secret of his own. At his mother’s ball, he is introduced to five prospective brides for him to meet. But he is still thinking about Odette and tells his mother he can not marry any of these women. At that moment, two new guests arrive: Von Rothbart and his daughter Odile, transformed to resemble Odette. Siegfried is drawn to her and they dance together. At the end of their dance, he declares his love for Odile and, with his mother’s approval and Von Rothbart’s encouragement, he swears his formal oath.
Odile and Von Rothbart take that opportunity to reveal their true identities, but it is too late. Siegfried sees Odette through the window. Realizing that he has fallen for this trick, he chases after her.
Siegfried’s betrayal has solidified the curse and Odette will stay a swan forever. He begs her forgiveness and she grants it, but there is nothing to be done. She decides she can not live this way any longer and throws herself off a cliff. Siegfried follows. This act of pure love breaks the spell and kills Von Rothbart. With the spell broken, Odette and Siegfried’s spirits are reunited eternally.
Carmen and Fuego Lento
On the 22nd of September Aspendos Theatre will host the Astana Ballet Theatre of Kazakhstan. They will perform two exceptional dance performances where the Astana Ballet will bring Spanish passions on the stage. In the first part of the evening the “Carmen Suite” ballet will be presented. The legendary “Carmen Suite” ballet by Alberto Alonso, themed on Georges Bizet’s “Carmen” opera, is recognized as a masterpiece of choreography, created by the legendary ballerina
ART + CULTURE
Maya Plisetskaya. Nurlan Kanetov, the artistic director of the Astana Ballet theatre states: “Carmen Suite is a brilliant ballet, which has a worldwide success. At the same time, it is anti-classical, as it has always been called: there is angularity, uncharacteristic for classical ballet, positions are not turned out, and angles are sharp. I formerly danced this performance myself and I understand perfectly well what professional growth a role from it can provide. The image of Carmen is the personification of passion, female irresistibility, and independence.”
The plot of the ballet focuses on tragic fate of a gypsy woman Carmen and the soldier Jose who loved her, and whom Carmen leaves for the young Torero.
The second part of the evening will feature the neoclassical ballet “A Fuego Lento” by Ricardo Amarante. According to the Astana Ballet Theatre, this is a bright dynamic performance with expressive plastique staged to the original music by composers Lalo Schifrin, Astor Piazzolla, Carlos Gardel, and Sayo Kosugi. This ballet is equally loved by both performers and the audience for its unstoppable energy and charisma. “A Fuego Lento” is included in the program of each tour of the theatre: it was presented on the stage of the Theatre Royal in Covent Garden (London), Lincoln Center (New York), Grimaldi Forum Monaco (Monte Carlo), etc. Temperamental
exciting tango melodies sharpen all emotions and forever remain in the hearts of the audience.
TOSCA
Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece opera "Tosca" will be performed on the 26th of September. It will be staged by the Antalya State Opera and Ballet, where the director will be Yiğit Yavuz Günsoy and the orchestra will be conducted by Lorenzo Castriota. Tosca is a political thriller, set in Rome in 1800 during the Napoleonic wars and a time of great political unrest. The plot centers around three main characters— Rome’s diva Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi and the corrupt Chief of Police, Baron Scarpia. Scarpia has long lusted after Tosca, and when he finds out that Cavaradossi assists an escaped political prisoner he captures Cavaradossi. Scarpia offers Tosca a horrific bargain—she must give herself to Scarpia, or her lover is killed.
Tosca insists that Scarpia must provide safeconduct out of Rome for herself and Cavaradossi. He easily agrees to this and heads to his desk. While he is drafting the document, she quietly takes a knife from the supper table. When he begins to embrace her, she stabs him, crying "this is Tosca's kiss!" Once she is certain he is dead, she removes the safe-conduct from his pocket. Tosca later shows Cavaradossi the safe-conduct pass she has obtained, adding
that she has killed Scarpia and that the imminent execution is a sham. Cavaradossi must feign death, after which they can flee together before Scarpia's body is discovered. The pair imagine the life they will share, far from Rome. Tosca then anxiously coaches Cavaradossi on how to play dead when the firing squad shoots at him with blanks. He promises he will fall "like Tosca in the theatre." Cavaradossi is led away, and Tosca watches with increasing impatience as the firing squad prepares. The men fire, and Tosca praises the realism of his fall. Once the soldiers have left, she hurries toward Cavaradossi, urging him to get up, only to find that Scarpia betrayed her: the bullets were real. Tosca runs to the parapet crying "We meet before God!" and jumps over the edge to her death ■
The Festival will adjourn with the Gala Concert on the 30th of September.

SOCIAL ENTREPRENEURSHIP
Social entrepreneurs are redefining success by prioritizing positive social impact over financial gain, proving that business can be a force for good.
By Guclu Ozenci
After more than 26 years in the tech ecosystem, both in my professional career with global vendors and in my entrepreneurial journey since 2013, I have realized the power and effectiveness of purpose and mission for any business, including startups. Millennials and the upcoming Gen Z in the workforce have completely changed their priorities and expectations. They prioritize experiences over ownership, purpose over profit, sustainability over growth, and a broader social engagement rather than focusing solely on family.
Every business must sell its offerings to potential clients and create a sustainable structure. However, the world keeps changing, and people who earn and spend money are becoming more aware and conscious of our bigger problems today. They are not only interested in solving immediate needs, like ordering lunch, hailing a cab, or subscribing to Netflix. They also want to use less polluting detergents, reduce carbon footprints, and promote equality for the world's population.
We often hear about and admire successful tech entrepreneurs in the media. However, there is another group of entrepreneurs who create profitable and sustainable businesses with a purpose for the public good. These individuals, known as social entrepreneurs, identify social problems and use entrepreneurial principles to create and manage ventures that address these issues innovatively. They aim to develop sustainable solutions to issues like poverty, education, healthcare, environmental sustainability, and more.
The Founder Institute (FI) accelerator, which I lead in the DMV region, also has a social impact mission. While we help entrepreneurs start and grow their businesses, with a primary focus on supporting early-stage entrepreneurs and startups, FI is also committed to social impact. FI’s mission revolves around using entrepreneurship to make a positive difference in the world.
By fostering a community that values both innovation and social good, FI seeks to support the growth of startups that not only achieve financial success but also contribute positively to society. These values are very dear to my heart, and I personally support missionoriented ventures.
Key characteristics of a social entrepreneur include being innovative, sustainable, mission-driven, impactoriented, and willing to take risks. Their primary goal is to create positive social change rather than just generating profit. They often develop new methods, products or services to solve social problems and focus on creating long-term solutions that can be sustained over time, often through a business model that allows for financial self-sufficiency. Like traditional entrepreneurs, social entrepreneurs are willing to take risks, but their risks are aimed at achieving social good. They measure success by the impact they have on the community or society, not just by financial metrics.
This approach means their investors are sometimes different from those in other ventures.
In my view, creating a purpose-driven business with a positive impact is not just a choice, but a responsibility we all share. Independence from investors allows you to stay true to your mission and make a meaningful difference in the world. I encourage you to consider this approach and am open to discussing your business plans and growth methodologies. ■

THE EMOTIONALLY ABSENT MOTHER
“The parents have eaten sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge.”
By Melisa Gulsun Ozmen
Our first emotional and social relationship begins with our primary caregiver, who for the majority of us is our mother. The mother is the emotional bridge between the spiritual world and this world. It is the mediator of the body, mind, and spirit that brings the souls that intend to incarnate into this world from the other world. It is the first emotional bond established with this world, the first look, the first touch, the first consciousness.
However, before we open our eyes to the world, there is a stage of life which begins in the last three months in the womb. Starting from the last three months of pregnancy, the mother's emotional and mental state, along with her fears, pains, worries and concerns, begin to be recorded in the baby's subconscious mind and neural activity. Psychiatrist Thomas Verny writes, “From the moment of conception, the experience in the womb shapes the brain and lays the groundwork for
personality, emotional temperament and the power of higher thought.” This development of the brain in the womb continues in the first nine months outside the womb and continues to take shape depending on the environment
- Ezekiel 18:1-4
in the home where the baby first lives until the age of seven. During this development process, the person we are most affected by is again our mother, naturally. If the emotional bond between the mother and the baby is interrupted due to an unavoidable circumstance such as a long-term hospital stay or other physical separation or simply because the mother is emotionally and psychologically unavailable for the baby due to inherited traumas, it is a life threatening and devastating experience from the baby’s perspective, which in turn is a cause of difficulty in forming healthy emotional relationships in adulthood. As we grow up and break away from our mothers and start moving out into the world, we experience many emotional traumas that we cannot make sense of. The first source of those traumas is usually based on the first emotional bond we established with our mother. This first emotional bond we established in life is automatically reflected in the emotional bonds we establish later in our adult lives, as explained in the theory of
LIFE COACHING
attachment styles. If we experience difficulties and obstacles in establishing emotional bonds, exchanging love, meeting our emotional needs, and expressing love and emotional needs in the close relationships we establish in adulthood, it demonstrates that we did not learn how to express emotional language properly in our first relationship with our mother because we grew up with the emotional absence of a dysfunctional mother. And before that, our mother failed to learn the emotional language from her own mother, as our grandmother failed to from her own mother. In his book It Didn't Start with You, Mark Wolynn, an expert in the field of inherited family trauma, says that we receive aspects of our grandmother’s mothering through our own mother. He explains that, “The traumas our grandmother endured, her pains and sorrows, her difficulties in her childhood or with our grandfather, the losses of those she loved who died early ¬¬– these filter, to some degree, into the mothering she gave to our mother.”
Emotional trauma is inherited from generation to generation, but it does not have to be a pre-written destiny. A generation that has not learned these skills from their mothers can break this cycle if they wish to heal and transform the initial emotional traumas they experienced from their mothers. We may not all be lucky enough to come into this world through mothers who are able to transmit the essence of love to us and speak the language of love correctly. However, the maternal bond is the first bond we establish with our primitive brain. The emotional bonds we establish at a later age should be conscious bonds, ones that we must establish with our thinking mind. Transforming and healing the traumatic emotional bonds inherited from our mother is possible and it is an opportunity to reach emotional maturity.
If you are a mother, your greatest emotional responsibility from pregnancy onward is to heal yourself first, so as not to pass on your inherited emotional trauma to your child. Of course, this is not as easy as just saying it. It is a long-term learning process
that requires patience, but perhaps this is the reason a mother becomes a mother. In her book The Emotionally Absent Mother, psychotherapist Jasmin Lee Cori highlights how to recognize and heal the invisible effects of growing up as an emotionally neglected child. She gives clues on how to heal the traumas inherited from mothers and to learn how to become the best version of your own mother. Being able to be your own best mother in adulthood, independent of your mother, is a great responsibility for yourself. When you do not take this responsibility yourself, you will unconsciously put the responsibility of motherhood on your children and raise what will end up being parentified children. And the unhealed trauma will pass to the next generation.
That is why the most difficult and responsible profession in the world is motherhood. The spiritual responsibility of this profession
begins in the womb, continues until death and is then passed on to the children. If for any reason your mother did not take the responsibility to heal herself, it is no use for your own healing to blame her or to complain about her irresponsibility. Instead, take the responsibility of being your own best mother and build and strengthen the bridge to your spiritual world. ■

PUBLIC RELATIONS IN SUPPORT OF SUCCESSFUL LEGAL PROFESSION
Effective PR strategies amplify a law firm’s credibility and visibility, transforming reputation management into a powerful tool for growth and client acquisition.
By Suheyla Tayla
Public relations (PR) is not just a component but a cornerstone of success in any profession. In the legal business, PR and media relations play a pivotal role. In the face of increasing competition and the complexities of legal matters, a well-structured PR strategy becomes an indispensable tool for law firms and individual lawyers.
In the legal profession, reputation is the bedrock. For lawyers, PR is not merely about publicity, but about crafting a reputation, demonstrating competence, and fostering trust both in the public and within the sector. Positive PR is instrumental in building and sustaining the reputation of a law firm, by showcasing success stories, expertise, and satisfied client references. PR efforts, such as media coverage, thought-leadership articles, and positive online reviews, not only enhance a firm's reputation but also attract new clients.
PR is not just about managing the firm's image, but about building a lasting reputation based on trust, credibility, and expertise. Trust is the cornerstone of the attorney-client relationship. Through PR, law firms can amplify their expertise by highlighting successful case outcomes and client testimonials, thereby building credibility.
Effective PR strategies can increase a lawyer's or firm's visibility in the media, online platforms, and within the community. Building solid relationships with journalists and media outlets is of crucial
importance. Lawyers can offer expert commentary on legal issues, provide insights on high-profile cases, and write op-eds. Regular media appearances help establish lawyers as thought leaders and make them a voice in the sector. Participating in conferences, seminars, and webinars can enhance a lawyer's visibility and credibility. Public speaking opportunities allow lawyers to share their knowledge, network with peers, and attract potential clients.
In today’s digital age, online reputation management is critical. Potential clients often search online for reviews and information before choosing a lawyer. An active social media presence is a must for modern PR. Platforms like LinkedIn, X, and Meta allow lawyers to share insights, engage with followers, and build a professional online being. Social media can also be a platform for rebuffing any baseless allegations, addressing misconceptions, and managing the firm’s image.
The PR experts have the skills and experience to craft effective PR strategies, manage media relations, create structured content, and handle crises. A PR professional can also provide valuable insights and advice, helping law firms navigate the complexities of public perception and media engagement.
In conclusion, for the legal profession, effective PR is not just about managing the firm's image; it is about building a lasting reputation based on trust, credibility, and expertise. By implementing the strategic PR practice suggestions of professionals, lawyers, and law firms can enhance their
visibility, attract new clients, and confidently navigate the landscape's challenges. As the legal market continues to evolve, a robust PR strategy will remain vital for any successful law practice. ■
İSTANBUL: ASIAN SIDE ANATOLIAN FORTRESS: THE OTTOMAN’S STRATEGIC MOVE TOWARD CONSTANTINOPLE
Mehmed II fortified the Anatolian Fortress, partnering it with Rumelihisarı to control Bosphorus traffic and secure victory in 1453.
By Nil Güler
İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı; Önce hafiften bir rüzgâr esiyor; Yavaş yavaş sallanıyor Yapraklar, ağaçlarda; Uzaklarda, çok uzaklarda
Sucuların hiç durmayan çıngırakları; İstanbul'u dinliyorum, gözlerim kapalı. Orhan Veli Kanık
Anatolian Fortress: The start of capturing Constantinople
Everything started when Ottoman Sultan Beyazıt built the Anatolian fortress as part of his preparations for a siege on the then-Byzantine city of Constantinople between 1393 and 1394.
It is the oldest surviving Turkish architectural structure built in Istanbul and gives
its name to the neighborhood around it in the city's Beykoz district. Beyazıt’s grandson, Sultan Mehmed II (Fatih) reinforced the fortress. As part of his plans to launch a renewed military campaign to conquer Constantinople, Mehmed II further built a sister structure to Anadoluhisarı across the Bosphorus called Rumelihisarı. The two fortresses worked jointly in 1453 to control all maritime traffic along the Bosphorus, thus helping the Ottomans to conquer the city. The greater municipality of Istanbul has recently renovated Anadolu Hisarı and now serves as a museum.
Yuşa Tepesi (Joshua’s Hill): This is a historical and religious site in Beykoz 180 meters above the sea level and offers stunning views of the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At the top of the hill is a tomb that is believed to be the grave of Saint Joshua.
Yoros Castle (Yoros Kalesi) is a ruined Byzantine castle in the Beykoz district, north of Joshua's Hill, which overlooks the Bosphorus and the Black Sea. At present, only the exterior of the upper castle can be visited; entrances to its interior are closed off.
Anadolu Kavagı: A very nostalgic fisherman’s village where you eat freshly cooked fish. It is the end of Bosphorus.
The Maiden's Tower (Kız Kulesi), also known as Leander's Tower, existed since the Byzantine period; it is a tower on a small islet at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus strait, 200 m. from the coast of Üsküdar in Istanbul. In the fifth century BCE, a customs point was established on the island where the tower is located today to inspect ships coming from the Black Sea and to collect taxes. There are also many legends about the Maiden Tower. According to one of them,
an oracle prophesied that a snake would kill the emperor's much-beloved daughter on her eighteenth birthday. To protect her, the emperor built a tower on the Bosphorus and locked her up there to keep her away from snakes. But still, when they were carrying grapes to her, a snake hid among them and bit the princess. So here comes the question: “Can you change your fate?”
It is possible to go to the tower by boat from Uskudar Salacak (very close to the tower) and Kabatas (on the European side). The Maiden's Tower services depart from Uskudar Salacak almost every 15 minutes between 9:00 am and 7:00 pm.
Haydarpasa Train Station is one of Istanbul’s most iconic landmarks. It is on Bosphorus. In 1871 Sultan Abdülaziz ordered the first railway line to be built from Haydarpaşa in Istanbul to İzmit. The architecturally beautiful majestic building was completed in 1909 and was the city’s main train station for many years. I took so many train trips to and from Ankara when I was a student.
Baghdad Railway, a major rail line connecting Haydarpasa with the Persian Gulf, was begun in 1888 by the Ottoman Empire . Financial difficulties and the technical problems of tunneling through the Taurus Mountains made progress extremely slow. Because of its potential strategic importance, work on the line was accelerated after the empire entered World War I . By the end of the war in 1918, the line had been extended from the Haydarpasa station to Nusaybin, which was several hundred miles short of Baghdad. Syria and Iraq eventually completed this remaining stretch and a subsequent extension to the port of Basra, Prince Islands: They consist of four major and five minor islands. Ordered west to east (also smallest to largest), the major ones are Kınalıada, Burgaz, Heybeliada, and Büyükada. They are closer to Asian Side, and would be a good day-trip especially when you have had enough of the crowd, noise, and traffic of Istanbul. The only way to get there is by sea: You can take Istanbul ferries from the European side either from Beşiktaş, Kabataş or Eminönü. Or on the Asian Side, from Kadıköy, Bostancı, Maltepe, and Kartal. The most frequent departures are from Bostancı. A trip on ferry takes around one-and-a-half hours from
the European side, and 45 minutes from the Asian Side. There are also sea bus fast ferries.
On the island there are very beautiful mansions. There is the Church of Saint George (Hagios Giorgios, Aya Yorgi), the Greek orphanage, and House of Trotsky (Leon Trotsky lived here after his exile from the Soviet Union by Stalin).
Transportation on the island is carried out by specially designed electric minibuses with open sides.
Bağdat Avenue (Bağdat Caddesi) is one of the most important high streets on the Anatolian side of Istanbul. It mainly runs through middle and upper-class residential areas. And it is a one-way street for traffic. You can take a dolmuş (minibus) that departs from Taksim and travels directly to Bagdad Avenue, or you can take the M2 metro line from Taksim Square to the Marmaray train line, which departs and arrives near Bostancı. The fashion trends are closely followed up on Baghdad Avenue and you can come across highly elegant people on this avenue. In Baghdad Avenue, people who love shopping never want to leave because of its luxurious stores, decent cafes, and pleasant atmosphere.
Tuzla: It is the most eastern district of Istanbul. It is one of the moderately populated districts of Istanbul. Türkiye's largest shipyards are located in Tuzla. Once a summer resort, it is now a maritime education and training center. A historic and famous Naval Academy (Deniz Harp Okulu), established in 1773, has been training naval officers for the Turkish nation uninterruptedly for more than two hundred years. Tuzla has been a center for many universities like the Maritime Faculty of Istanbul Technical University, Piri Reis University, Sabancı University, and Okan University. ■
