CONTENTS
Introduction by the Author Welcome to the third edition of my price guide to Royal Doulton Figures. Collectors who have purchased my Character fug guide will find the style and layout similar in this guide. It has been designed to be used as a pocket companion for collectors at auctions/antique fairs or wherever discontinued D o u l t o n figures are sold. All the 3000 p l u s figures m a d e are listed alphabetically with their market value to provide a quick source of reference. The first and very important point which has to be made in this publication is that the values contained within must only be used as an indication of, rather than the actual value of, a Doulton figure.

herea totally are several common sense reasons this, for theallmajor one figures, being that duce accurate up to the minute priceforguide Doulton several pieces are so rare they hardly, if ever, appear on the market; this prevents a price structure developing. Collectors should also note that these prices are point-of-sale prices, and that the prices dealer would offer are likely to be 30-50 per cent less. The Doulton market is worldwide. Active collectors' groups exist in South Africa, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, USA and the United Kingdom, with no doubt individual collectors in other countries. The values of individual items vary within and between all of these countries. Apart from the effects of freight charges and duty the reason for this is that the intrinsic value of any Doulton item is the value placed upon it by the individual collector seeking to acquire that particular piece. All collectors have different influences and

Rarity, while in itself being an indication of value, is not necessarily the only criteria. Many figures from the Deco period are worth far more than the early figures despite being far more common. The reason for this is that they are viewed as prettier and therefore more desirable by collectors. This is equally true for figures of a more recent production which for commercial reasons only stayed in production for a short period of time. At the end of the day the only true indication of a figure's value is the price an individual collector is prepared to pay for it. If the collector personally finds the figure unattractive or drab, as so many of the early figures are considered to be, he/she will not be lacking for an alternative purchase with over 2500 other figures to choose from. The sheer range and diversity of the HN series acts as a natural force against "silly" price escalation since the individual collector always has many different purchases to choose from unlike other Doulton collecting areas such as character jugs. The largest Doulton market in the world is undoubtedly the USA where the collecting fever for figures first originated. It is the prices paid by collectors in the USA which in the end affect the prices paid in the rest of the world. Within the USA the market for the top figures is largely mail order apart from those sold at the three Doulton specialist fairs held every year, two on the east coast and one on the west coast. In addition to this, there are at least 50 specialist Doulton dealers across the USA with particular concentrations in Ohio, New York and California. Royal Doulton items are also to be found among the stock of general antique dealers in the USA spreading from Florida to Nevada. The determined Doulton collector does have to travel around in America to find his Doulton but there are still many bargains to be found at flea markets and antique shops. Doulton collecting in Australia and New Zealand has been around ever since Royal Doulton first started to export to the commonwealth markets in the 1850s. According to all reports it is now growing rapidly with several collecting clubs in existence and a few specialist Doulton dealers, some of whom export to the UK and USA. As in the UK and North America, Doulton is to be found scattered among antique shops and fairs. Market values in New Zealand and Australia are difficult to set but it seems fair to say that although generally lower than either the USA or the UK, the prices reached for particularly rare items can often be comparable. In the UK there are approximately 45 specialist Doulton dealers with varying size, stocks and knowledge. The first UK Doulton fair was held in London in 1983 and 1986 saw the first International Fair to be held at Stafford, England, with exhibitors from North America, Canada and Australia. The reputation of Doulton as an art item is further enhanced by all the major auction houses who now hold specialist Doulton sales. The growth in Doulton collecting as a hobby seems to be maintaining its momentum in the UK. Along with this is the value pattern of the infrequently appearing rare figures that turn u p , which is consistently upward. These days with the growth in awareness of the value of Doulton items in the UK the collector now has to work hard to find a bargain. They still occur though, according to the reports I occasionally receive from those lucky collectors.

Why Doulton Figures? Royal Doulton must be one of the most collectable names of today and its figurines are the most popular items to have emerged from the Doulton factory. Why should it be that these figures have surpassed in the popularity stakes the multitude of other Doulton collectables? Furthermore, why should Royal Doulton figures and not those of any other manufacturers exert such a powerful hold over collectors from all over the world? I do not pretend to have come up with the definitive answer — it would be unrealistic to suppose that there are just one or two reasons. What follows are a few suggestions and I am sure that every collector will be able to add their own personal reasons to the list. Indeed, perhaps this is in itself a major factor in their appeal. Quality is fundamental to Doulton figures. A particular figurine may not be to one's taste but almost without exception there is something to be admired. The lustrous glazes and assured painting are very easy to take for granted. However it is only when one remembers that these objects are man produced, albeit of the highest craftsmanship, and not the limited product of a studio potter that the true quality of Doulton figures is realised. The fine modelling and attention to the smallest detail are inherent features of all Doulton figures. This has been the case from their inception to the present day. Compare a Doulton figure with a similar piece from virtually any other factory; the Doulton model will stand out as Deing special in an indefinable way. This can only partly be explained by the proven quality of the figures. They have a certain magic all of their own. The first figures in Doulton's famous HN range were issued in 1913. Since that date a huge variety of subjects have been added to the collection, robust character studies, coy children, art deco fantasies and perhaps the most famous of all, the Doulton pretty ladies; in fact something for all tastes. If the collector had limited space or a liking for the miniature, there were small scale figures available, (the "M' series — usually a smaller version of a full size figure). There were also several models, such as 'Erminie' (M40) and 'Robin' (M28) which were only ever issued as miniatures. At the other end of the scale for collectors with more space and larger cheque books there are the impressive prestige pieces which seem to stretch the skills of the ceramic craftsman to the limit. There have been more than 3000 HN numbers allocated since the launch of the collection and the majority of these are different models. Luckily the collection sub-divides easily into interesting themes such as child studies, theatrical characters or street vendors. 'Luckily", because it is doubtful if many collectors would set themselves the insuperable task of acquiring the complete collection. At this point it is perhaps worth mentioning that there is at least one collector who nas in fact set herself this goal and is currently well on the way to completing her vast collection. The majority of collectors usually find more than enough scope to build a comprehensive collection without aiming for the total range. There are very few Doulton figures in contemporary dress. Even in the nineteen-thirties there were only a handful of figurines, such as "Miss 1926' and Irish Colleen', which could be thought of as being lively representations of the fashions of the day. The 1950s Peggy Davies style set of figures really evoke the feel of the period rather than the style of dress. This lack of contemporary fashion perhaps gives a clue to the attraction of Doulton figures

for some collectors. By appearing to come from an age of elegance and grace, (attributes some mignt think have been lost by the twentieth century), the Doulton lady dressed in a pastiche of eighteenth or nineteenth century fashions strike a note of yearning for a more gentle, refined age. The eighteenth and nineteenth centuries were not easy for the majority, but Doulton figures were never meant to be part of a history lesson, so does it really matter that they present an idealised view of days gone by? It may sound like a statement of the obvious but it is much easier to form a collection if the would-be collector knows exactly what constitutes the collection. Information is the key to successful collecting. In recent years the Doulton collector certainly cannot complain of a lack of publications on their passion. These books have helped the established collector and fired the enthusiasm of many an embryonic collector. This abundance of information can be something of a double-edged sword. Pioneer figure collectors in the United States still talk of the halcyon days in the early 1970s when out of production models all tended to fall in the same price bracket. There was then no conception of rarities, as there was very little published information on the subject. Many collectors, thirsty for knowledge, began corresponding with one another, passing on information gleaned from all manner of sources. Some rather dubious theories were expounded and it was not until 1978, when Royal Doulton Figures by Desmond Eyles was available, that competition then became very fierce for some of the rarest figures. The figure book was by no means complete and since its publication many previously unseen models have come to light. Every day brings surprises in the Doulton world and this is another appealing aspect of the subject. Availability is an important consideration when embarking on any collecting project. There is very little point in setting out on an impossible quest for collectables which are known to exist in minute numbers. Pointless unless, of course, one is a 'Getty' with inexhaustable resources of time and money. It is much more satisfactory to collect something which is known to exist in appreciable numbers, knowing that one stands a fair chance of amassing a reasonable selection of the chosen articles. This is the case with Doulton figures. While it is undeniable that certain figures are very rare and when and if they ever surface command a king's ransom, the majority seem to turn up eventually — as many a collector's bank balance will testify. Psychologists would doubtlessly be able to suggest a whole range of different theories to explain the fascination of these 'poems in pottery' as Doulton figures were described in the 1930s catalogues. But whatever the true reason for their appeal, I cannot help thinking the best reason for the success of Doulton figures was that given to me by an enthusiastic English collector. When I asked her why she had filled her home with an army of china ladies, she simply said, "Because I like them". Š Doug Pinchin November 1985

Rarities
Š Francis Joseph Publications 2014
As mentioned earlier in this book the full recorded list of Doulton figures is by no means complete. New variations of existing figures and completely new figures previously unknown are still occasionally turningup. In terms of value ranking, these 'rarities' can be split into three groups. The first group is comprised of new colour variations. Many figures, particularly among the 'Ladies', were produced with several colour variations for example 'Victorian Lady', which is known to exist in 15 colourways. Unrecorded colour variations of known figures do turn up fairly frequently. As to their value, this is extremely difficult to assess in general terms. It will depend on the figure's own rarity and its known number of colour variations or lack of them. As a general guide, add 70-100 per cent to the value of the figure although in some cases variations have sold for much higher sums. The second group is new variations of existing figures, i.e. figures turning up with the same name and number as recorded figures but looking totally different. A good example of this occurred in 1984 with the discovery of a completely new version of 'The Modern Piper' as reported in the The Collectors' Club magazine. This figure was eventually sold privately for well over ÂŁ800, several times the value of the more common versions. In cases like this, when a completely new variation is discovered, it is impossible to predict a final value but without doubt it will far exceed its common counterpart. These figures were pilots that never went into full production but occasional examples do get on to the market. The third group, which is closely related to the second, is where totally new figures previously unrecorded are discovered. These may be pilot figures or commercially produced figures with a very short production run. Their values will be on a par with the second group and unfortunately are equally difficult to determine. Occasionally, known figures turn up in totally different glazes. These are experimental models and one example is the 'Boy on a Crocodile' which appears in Flambe glaze. Once again, figures like these must attract a premium above their normally glazed counterparts, though exactly what rise m price will depend solely on the market at the time. Finally, all the Doulton figures produced and withdrawn before 1949 can be classified as rarities. A maximum of 2000 of each of these figures is believed to have been produced. In many cases, the number will have been lower. Taking into account breakages over the years, these figures are rare indeed. In this book, all of these figures have an asterisk next to them denoting rarity and a very tentative market value is given. It is tentative because their rarity means that their occasional appearance on the market creates its own value depending on the market at the time. A few figures such as The Tailor' were produced only for a few years and then withdrawn, presumably due to lack of commercial success. All of these figures irrespective of when produced now have a premium value.

by Louise Irvine Occasionally prototype figures come on to the market and create a lot of interest amongst senous collectors looking for rare and unusual pieces. They are also known as 'trial' figures or 'pilots' and these are both apt descriptions but Doulton invariably use the term prototype when referring to a figure taken from the master mould. When an original clay model has been approved it is cut up to make a plaster of Paris master mould, which is also known as a block. A few prototype figures are then produced from the block and decorated in different colourways for discussion at the company's design and marketing meetings. If the model is approved for the HN collection then a rubber 'case' will be made to produce lots of working moulds but if it is rejected it will only exist in prototype form. In some cases it is apparent why the figure was not successful but many prototypes are singularly attractive and could not have been rejected for design or modelling weaknesses. Perhaps the design was considered to be too similar to others in the collection or perhaps it was too expensive to make in relation to its perceived value. The decision has not always been in the hands of Doulton executives as, during the 1970s, the company ran a research programme for figures in North America. A selection of prototypes, together with some current figures acting as control pieces, were shown to women's groups, students and other organisations all over the USA and Canada and their opinions invited. Occasionally the prototype figures disappeared wnilst on tour and later appeared on the market marked 'Survey figure', 'Survey sample' or 'For market research purposes'. Such surveys were discontinued in the 1980s and today great care is taken to ensure prototypes do not 'escape' from the company. Since 1980 they have been clearly marked The property of Royal Doulton- Not produced for sale' or a similar backstamp. In the past, nowever, little value was attached to these experimental figures and they were regularly sold off to employees. When they appear on the market, often through the Staffordshire salerooms, the majority have no indication of their prototype status. Usually there will be a Royal Doulton backstamp, but not always, and an impressed number which enables the figure to be authenticated by referring to the Doulton shape records held at the company's archive in Stoke-in-Trent. Sometimes the figure has an HN number but invariably this has been re-allocated when it was not put into
production
. There are also rare instances of prototypes being named on the reduction. It is widely believed that prototype figures are unique and whilst it is true ottom duplicates have not appeared on the market there can be no guarantees that they do not exist. Nowadays at least two or three prototypes are taken from the block for discussion and it is feasible that this was also the case in the past. A figure might remain in prototype form for a number of years before finally going into production as happened with Mary Nicoll s figures 'A Penny's Worth' and the 'Carpenter' which joined the collection in 1986, many ears after her death, so there is a risk element in buying prototypes, [owever, this does not seem to affect auction prices which are often in excess of ÂŁ1000 for attractive models.

The term prototype refers to a very specific stage in the manufacturing process, as explained previously, and should not be confused with other rare models. For instance sample figures have occasionally been produced for test marketing purposes and sold in selected outlets to more accurately assess public reaction. In 1984 six models for the proposed 'Elegance' collection were test marketed in the USA but they did not officially enter the range. However, as small quantities were produced they do not qualify as prototypes. Alterations are occasionally made once a figure has gone into production as with 'Masque', which was originally made with a metal handled mask, but the term prototype is not applicable to early production models such as these. Unrecorded colourways also frequently appear on the market but these are not necessarily prototypes although examples marked with the 'Property of Royal D o u l t o n ' b a c k s t a m p could be trial versions of figures w h i c h subsequently went into production. Generally speaking these are not as sought after as prototypes of models which never joined the HN collection. As can be seen prototype figures are very rare and it is difficult and expensive to build an extensive collection. Nevertheless everybody can enjoy studying examples which have passed through the salerooms and can speculate why they were 'the ones that got away'.

Vellum Figures by-Louise Irvine
Š Francis Joseph Publications 2014
Long before the HN series of figures was introduced the sculptor Charles Noke had been working on a collection of models known today as the Vellum figures because of their parchment-like colouring. They were similar to the figures which Noke had produced at the Worcester factory during the 1880s, under the influence of the famous modeller James Hadley, and they are very different in style to the HN figures. Most of them are quite large, with some measuring 20 inches tall, and the ivory tinted Parian body has often been subtly coloured in 'mother of pearl' sheens with gold highlights by the prestige artists in Robert Allen's studio. An RA number was allocated to various decorative treatments but this is rarely found on the piece. Noke exhibited his first Vellum figures at the Chicago exhibition of 1893 but they did not create the interest he had hoped for. Perhaps they were considered too expensive as the larger models were priced at $400, a considerable sum in those days. Undeterred Noke continued to introduce new models and by the end of the century there were 21 free-standing figures and 4 wall-mounted models, which were used as flower holders or electric lights. Some of the free-standing models were also available with lamp fittings. Vellum figures were also shown at the Paris exhibition of 1900, St Louis in 1904 and Christchurch in 1906 but, as they still did not capture the public imagination, Noke began to experiment with brighter colours and smaller sizes. The unusual double sided figure of 'Mephistopheles and Marguerite' has been found with a vivid orange costume, a rich blue or a dramatic black one. Never one to waste ideas, Noke e v e n t u a l l y a d a p t e d some of his Vellum studies for reproduction in the HN range in a different ceramic body and decorative style. One of his first figures of 'A Jester' was originally produced in a plain white Parian body and a Vellum style finish before being given a suit of motley colours for the HN range. In this guise it b e c a m e one of the most successful Doulton figures and a colour variation is still made today. Production of the early Vellum figures was always extremely limited and they do not often appear on the market. There was very little information available about them until the revised edition of Royal Doulton Figures was published in 1987. There, for the first time, collectors could see photographs or pattern book illustrations of all the m o d e l s r e c o r d e d in the Doulton archives. However, it transpired that Ellen Terry as Queen Catherine HN 1893 and these records were not complete as Henry Irving as Cardinal WolseyHN1899.

Restorations
Š Francis Joseph Publications 2014
Damaged and subsequently repaired figures inevitably appear on the Doulton market. In recent years repaired figures have become more common and are increasingly difficult to identify. This is d u e to the increased skill of professional restorers and is prompted by the worldwide growth in value of all Doulton collections. The growth in value has m a d e it financially worthwhile to have figures professionally restored. When b u y i n g a figure today, u t m o s t care m u s t be taken to a v o i d unknowingly buying a restored or slightly damaged piece. The two areas on a figure most susceptible to damage are the arms and head. Both areas should be closely examined for damage or restoration. The following advice may help you to detect defective pieces. Look down the inside of a figure paying particular attention to its head since the repair may not be detectible from the outside. Examine the rest of the figure for chips or cracks under a strong light. Take your time over doing this as the small chips, which often occur, can be extremely difficult to spot. Some restorations are of such high quality that the use of even an ultra violet lamp will not detect the acrylic paints used today. Any reputable dealer will guarantee, if asked, that a figure is perfect and will refund the money if a figure is proved to be a restored one after it is sold. To avoid later misunderstanding it is wise to always ask for this verbal guarantee in writing. Restored and damaged figures do have a market value and will sell if priced accordingly. Many collectors will buy a good restoration for their collection. This is either done because it reduces the high cost of collecting or to enhance the collection until a perfect model of the figure can be obtained. The value of a restoration depends upon the quality and detectibility of the restoration. As a general guide expect to pay 60-70 per cent below the market value of a perfect version. However, a rare figure could fetch a higher percentage of its perfect price and in cases of extreme rarity makes no difference to the price reached.

Perhaps the most influential designer at Doulton was Charles Noke who initiated the HN series. He began to work at the Burslem Studio from 1889, having left the Worcester factory. He worked with both Sir Henry Doulton and Henry Lewis Doulton at the close of the nineteenth century and the onset of the twentieth century. Noke was responsible for putting Doulton into the kinds of figureware production which we see today and conceived the idea for the HN figure series as well as that other popular Doulton collectable, the character jug. Several of the earlier figures produced in the HN series were a re-working of earlier Vellum figures designed by Noke, such as 'Mephistopheles and Marguerite' first produced at Burslem in the 1890s. It is interesting to note that 'Mephistopheles' was originally designed as a concept character by Noke several years earlier and it was produced in the form of a double-sided match striker by Doulton Burslem in the 1880s, re-appearing as a character jug in 1937, some 12 years after being introduced into the HN range in 1925. While the introduction and establishment of the HN series is undoubtedly due to the creative commercialism of Charles Noke, it is thanks to the wonderful talent and artistic creativity of the designer Leslie Harradine, sustained over a period of 40 years, that Doulton figures occupy their unique osition as the most popular ceramic collectable of the twentieth century, eslie Harradine's work for Royal Doulton was responsible for the increasing popularity which the series started to generate amongst buyers of quality ceramic pieces. It was the fresh, invigorating designs, such as 'Angela', which seemed to reach some indefinable appeal to the 1920s and 1930s buying public. Leslie Harradine started as an apprentice modeller at the age of 15 in the Doulton Lambeth studio and his creativity was in evidence from the beginning, contributing such eternal Doulton characters as 'Sam Weller', 'Sairey Gamp' and 'Mr Micawber' which were later incorporated into the HN series. In 1912, however, he decided to emigrate to Canada where his brother had bought a farm. Farming as a lifestyle was abandoned by Harradine during the First World War when he and his brother returned to Europe to fight in a horse regiment. They both saw action in France and Harradine's horse was shot from underneath him twice, leaving him with a badly injured leg on the second occasion. After the war he settled in Bedfordshire while his brother returned to the farm in Canada. When Charles Noke heard that Harradine had returned to England and was working as a independent artist he tried to persuade him to come back to work for Royal Doulton as a full time designer. Harradine had no wish to surrender his freedom, however, and planned: to live and develop as an independent artist no matter what inducements Noke offered. Eventually a compromise was reached and Harradine agreed to model figures at home and send them regularly up to Noke who would then decide if they could be reproduced in bone china. The rest is Doulton history as Harradine sent between one and four figures per month for the next 40 years, many of which ended up in the HN range. Such eternal favourites as The Mask Seller', Top O' The Hill' and 'Bo Peep' were produced by him and it is these figures today that for many a collector illustrate the beauty and variety of the HN range at its best.

Doulton Designers

Š Francis Joseph Publications 2014
Other designers for Doulton are no less i m p o r t a n t since they also contributed to the flair, consistency, quality and appeal of Doulton figures. In the 1950s and 60s two female designers were the mainstays of the HN collection, Peggy Da vies and Mary Nicoll. Peggy joined Royal Doulton in 1939 as assistant to Charles Noke and, after a period nursing during the war, she established herself, like Harradine, as an independent modeller producing figures under contract. In a career which spanned more than 40 years, she was responsible for over 250 models, including best selling crinoline ladies such as 'Southern Belle' and prestigious limited edition collections. In contrast, Mary Nicoll, specialised in character figures and, until her death in 1974, she contributed a wide range of nautical characters, street entertainers and historical personalities which she modelled in her Devon studio. The character figure range has been continued until the present day in the capable hands of Bill Harper, who has produced many popular models, for instance T h e Clown'. In 1972 Royal Doulton appointed Eric Griffiths to the new role of Head of Sculpture with responsibility for overseeing the development of the figure range, working with independent sculptors, such as Douglas V Tootle, and training new young modellers, such as Peter Gee and Robert Tabbenor. Eric Griffiths' own particular interest was portraiture and he introduced various figure studies of the Royal Family and other famous people. Following his retirement in 1990, Amanda Dixon became the new Art Director, supervising the growing team of in-house modellers and commissioning work from some of today's most successful freelance designers, notably Pauline Parsons.

Royal Doulton's first limited edition figures date from the 1930s and it is significant that the concept was initially used for the work of the celebrated sculptor Richard Garbe, a Professor at the Royal College of Art and a frequent exhibitor at the Royal Academy. His bronze sculptures would have been sold in small editions, cast to order at the metal foundry, so why not his work in clay? Limiting his figures also distinguished them from the rest of the range, as befitted his reputation as a major artist, and assured collectors of their special significance. Seven of Game's figures were introduced in 1933, in editions of 25-100 pieces, and some took six years to sell out. With such small numbers it is hardly surprising that these figures rarely appear on the market and when they do there is a lot of competition to acquire them, not just in the Doulton world but also amongst connoisseurs of twentieth century sculpture. Charles Noke, the Art Director of the Burslem studio, also limited one of his own figures in 1933 — an impressive study of Henry VIII with richly painted and gilded robes, which was sold in an edition of 200. As with the Garbe figures, the Henry VIII edition took several years to sell out and perhaps this is why the company did not offer another limited edition for over 30 years. In 1967, Peggy Davies' dramatic study of an Indian Brave' on horseback set new standards for limited edition sculptures with its complex modelling and intricate painting and she followed this in 1971 with an equally ambitious figure of the "Pafio". Neither of these editions of 500 were completely sold out and they are now much in demand on the secondary market. As well as these large prestige pieces, Peggy also modelled several collections of lady figures with additional detail and accessories for the limited edition range. Her Lady Musicians', 'Dancers of the World' and 'Femmes Fatales' proved to be very popular and the editions of 750 were quickly sold out. Today they are all very sought after, particularly if sold with the original boxes and certificates of authenticity. Following Peggy's retirement in 1984, Pauline Parsons and Peter Gee have continued the tradition of limited edition lady figures with popular collections such as the 'Queens of the Realm' and 'Gainsborough Ladies'. Edition sizes have increased in recent years to 5000 or 9500 in response to the growing demand from all the Lawleys by Post customers. A successful precedent for these large editions was first established in 1984 when Hope', was produced in an edition of 9500 to raise funds for the NSPCC and very quickly sold out. Since then several other limited edition figures have been used to promote and generate money for worthy causes, both by Royal Doulton and independent commissioners. Important anniversaries, special occasions and royal events have also frequently been commemorated with limited edition figures, for example the recent portrait of TCing Henry VIII' which was produced to mark the 500th anniversary of his birth in 1991. The novel edition size of 1991 was soon oversubscribed and the company have repeated this idea with the 'Columbus' commemorative figure in an edition of 1492. As can be seen the concept of limited figures is currently very flexible with editions ranging from 1000 to 12500 for some of the latest Lawleys by Post commissions. The Collectors Club has also recently changed its exclusive products policy and now offers pre-determined limited editions such as 1/Ambitieuse' (5000) compared to pieces such as 'Sleepy Darling' or Trized

In this book the market value of each discontinued figure is given in the form of a price range. This reflects the Doulton market, where prices are known to vary around the margin on individual pieces. The very circumstances of a particular purchase may influence its price. For example, a dealer may intentionally price an item higher because he believes the collector demand in his area to be sufficient to warrant a higher sum. Another dealer could price the same item below market value in order to ensure a quick sale. The particular need for a figure may also influence its price. A collector requiring only one more piece to complete a set will place a higher value on this piece than on any of the set he already owns. The result of these marginal differences in value to both collectors and dealers is that there is no fixed market price for any Doulton item. However, by collating a number of individual prices for each item it is possible to estimate the market price range. The prices given in this book are based on prices observed and collected by the author over a six month period from leading dealers, auctioneers and collectors in Britain and the USA. The Doulton market changes rapidly with market values rising and falling, so always attempt to check values given with current market prices to identify changes in the market values listed in this section.

Introduction to market values
Items listed with 'RRP' or -cur will have been deleted by 2004 when the Doulton factory closed. Introductions after this date will not have the 'Made in England' backstamp. The marking of backstamps for items madeoverseas has become an area of hot dispute as the mark 'Doulton England' or similar can now be used even when the item is made in the far east. However, you will see that many of the none English made items appear in the list at the end of this book. Not being made in England, it is unlikely that the post 2004 introductions will become collectable in any real sense. Collectors will do best to concentrate on those finite items that have been made in England, and more particularly, on pre-war figures which are likely to be most attactive to investors over the longer term.
