Freedom and safety

Example: How much freedom are we willing to give up to make traffic more safe?  Example 1: Reduce speed limit in some places, for example in cities.  Example 2: Block engines in vehicles from going over x kilometers per hour.  Example 3: Cut speed limit in half everywhere.  Example 4: Only allow essential travel, for example delivery of products and transportation of people.  Example 5: Only allow expert to drive, i.e. only allowing public transportation, taxis and other ride services.

Total safety is not possible. Why? Because total safety would require monitoring and limiting the actions of everyone submitting to a protective but also authoritative body. Restricting actions limits freedom, and it also limits safety because we become vulnerable to whoever we trust for protection.

Two questions for you: 1. What personal safety can you give up, so others are free to work? 2. What personal freedoms can you give up to ensure the safety of others?

Freedom and safety are meant to exist together. The average human being wants to be free AND safe.  Only through a constant, yet balanced securitization can individuals truly exist in an environment that bolsters freedom.  Only through a careful allotment of rights can individuals exist in an environment that values safety.
