About a thousand marmots live around Zermatt. They are called “Murmunda� in Zermatt dialect.

The marmots are clever little animals. Over the years, they have moved closer to humans. This gives them a degree of protection against, for example, foxes and eagles, who do not like to get close to humans.

Question # 3 What are some great things to do in Zermatt?


At Gornetgrat, you can see 29 mountain peaks, which are all higher than 4,000 meters.

When you get off the train, you can also see Capricorns that live there.

You can get to Gornetgrat by taking the electric train from Zermatt. It takes about half an hour.


There is a 500 metre long suspension bridge near the town Randa, about 10 kilometres North of Zermatt.

The bridge, which opened in 2017, is open for everyone from June until November. Zermatt is located below Matterhorn, the iconic, pyramidshaped mountain. The Matterhorn is 4,500 metre high.

Between August 1861 and July 1865, Edward Whymper, an English mountain climber, tried 7 times with other people to climb the Matterhorn – without success. On July 14th, 1865, Whymper reached the top of the Matterhorn with 6 other people: Michel Croz from France, the Swiss father and son Peter Taugwalder Sr. and Jr. as well as 3 other British men, Charles Hudson, Francis Douglas and Douglas Robert Hadow. Walking down from the top of the mountain, Hadow, Croz, Hudson and Douglas fell and died. All but Douglas, whose body was never found, are buried in the Zermatt churchyard.
