Editorial Deportes náuticos todo el año La celebración en los últimos meses de competiciones y torneos de prestigio internacional en nuestras costas, que han traído a las Islas a los mejores del mundo en las distintas disciplinas deportivas, y en los que una vez más ha destacado el papel de los deportistas canarios, han puesto a las Islas Canarias en el punto de mira de aficionados de todas partes del mundo. El éxito de estos eventos y competiciones por su participación, organización y seguimiento, el admirable plantel de deportistas canarios en diversas disciplinas, y el número de aficionados cada vez mayor a los deportes de mar, confirman que las Islas son un lugar extraordinario para la práctica de los deportes náuticos. Como avanzábamos en el primer número de esta publicación de la Consejería de Turismo del Gobierno de Canarias, en este hecho también juega un papel fundamental la extensa oferta de productos y servicios para los amantes de los deportes de mar que nos visitan cada año. El verano acaba y da paso a unos meses en los que podremos seguir disfrutando de estas actividades deportivas pues nuestro benigno clima lo hace posible. Mientras en el resto de Europa se suspenden las actividades relacionadas con el mar durante el invierno, las Islas Canarias son un gran campo de juego abierto todo el año.

Water sports throughout the year In the last few months, the internationally renowned competitions and tournaments which have been taking place in our coasts, have brought to the Islands the best in the world in various sport disciplines, and once again have highlighted the role of our Canarian sportsmen and women. This has placed the Canary Islands in the spotlight for water sports’ lovers from around the world. The success that these events and competitions have achieved, in terms of enrollment, organization and following, the admirable lineup of local sportsmen and women in various disciplines, and the ever growing number of water sports enthusiasts, confirm the Islands as an extraordinary place for the practice of nautical sports. As we revealed in the first issue of this publication by the Tourism Council of the Government of the Canary Islands, this fact is also due to the extensive offer of products and services available for those lovers of nautical sports that visit us every year. Summer ends and is followed by months in which our mild climate allows us to continue enjoying these sport activities. While in the rest of Europe, all sea-related activities are halted throughout winter, The Canary Islands are a large playground open all year round.

Entrenados en el mar Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia impulsa la presencia de Canarias en las grandes competiciones, apoyando a equipos y deportistas
P
ozo Izquierdo y El Confital, en Gran Canaria, Sotavento y El Cotillo, en Fuerteventura, El Médano, en Tenerife, y la playa de Las Cucharas y Famara, en la isla de Lanzarote, son sólo algunos de los spots elegidos por deportistas de alto nivel del surf, windsurf y kiteboarding como base de entrenamiento. En éstos y otros lugares practica durante todo el año una cantera que cuenta con auténticos campeones y campeonas, y algunos de ellos (como queda reflejado en páginas anteriores) son sede de campeonatos mundiales en los que compiten año tras año los mejores especialistas del mundo. A lo largo de la costa canaria se localizan numerosos spots o lugares aptos para la práctica del windsurf, surf y kitesurfing. En ellas se iniciaron riders de la talla de Iballa y Daida Ruano (windsurf), Jonathan González o Julian Cuello (surf), cuyos nombres han dado la vuelta al mundo por los triunfos y logros obtenidos durante su trayectoria deportiva, y que ahora han pasado a formar parte de la
Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia. También son componentes de este proyecto Laura Fernández, campeona de España de kiteboarding, los surfistas Manolo Lezcano y José María Cabrera, y Ardiel Jiménez en la disciplina de bodyboard. El terminante respaldo del Gobierno de Canarias al deporte a través de los patrocinios nace de la firme convicción de que dichas acciones están permitiendo destacar la inigualable oferta de las Islas Canarias, entre los destinos de élite para la práctica de los deportes náuticos. De esta manera, además de las disciplinas mencionadas, se promociona la vela deportiva, la pesca deportiva y la fotografía submarina, representada esta última en la Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia por Carlos Minguell. En cuanto a la vela deportiva, el principal patrocinador del equipo de regatas Islas Canarias Puerto Calero es la Consejería de Turismo, que trabaja en el objetivo de agrupar a deportistas y equipos de primer orden con los que cuentan las Islas.
Apoyo decidido Este proyecto de la Consejería de Turismo tiene como objetivo general dar a conocer la inigualable oferta turística del Archipiélago, entre los destinos de élite para la práctica de los deportes náuticos. Trained in the sea Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia promotes the presence of the Canary Islands in important competitions, lending its support to the teams and individual sportsmen and women.
P
ozo Izquierdo and El Confital, in Gran Canaria, Sotavento and El Cotillo, in Fuerteventura, El Médano, in Tenerife, and the Las Cucharas beach and Famara, in the island of Lanzarote, are only some of the spots which have been selected to be as training base, by high-level surfers, windsurfers and kiteboarders. In these, and in other locations, a group of sportsmen and women train throughout the year, among them world champions, and some of them (as reflected in previous pages) are the venue for world championships in which the best specialists from around the world compete every year. Throughout the Canarian coast you find many spots or sites suitable for the practice of windsurfing, surfing and kitesurfing. This is where riders of the stature of Iballa and Daida Ruano (windsurfing) started, as well as Johnathan González or Julian Cuello (surfing), whose names have gone around the world thanks to the victories and achievements they have obtained throughout their career and are now part of the Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia. Also a part of this project are Laura Fernández, winner of the Spanish kiteboarding championship, surfers Manolo Lezcano and José María Cabrera, and Ardiel Jiménez in the bodyboard discipline. The categorical backing of the Government of the Canary Islands to sports through sponsorships is born out of the firm conviction that these actions allows them to highlight the incomparable offer of the Canary Islands among elite destinations for the practice of water sports. In this way, apart from the aforementioned disciplines, other sports which are promoted are: sailing, sport fishing and underwater photography, this last one represented in the Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia by Carlos Minguell. As for sailing, the main sponsor of the Islas Canarias Puerto Calero regatta team is the Tourism Council, whose aim is to group the Islands’ first class teams, sportsmen and women.
Determined support The object of this project of the Tourism Council is to promote the incomparable tourism offer of the Archipelago among elite destinations for the practice of water sports. This promotional action entails increasing in the general public the recognition of the effort and trajectory of those Canarian sportsmen and women who participate in the main national and international competitions, as well as in those competitions of international interest which take place in the Archipelago. Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia tries to bring together, Canarian sportsmen and women from all nautical disciplines, in a determined effort to promote the presence of the Canary Islands at main competitions, by supporting the teams and the sportsmen and women. In this way, the positioning of the Canary Island’s nautical tourism offer is maintained, apart from the institutional backing of its Government, by the support from the elite sportsmen and women which have been born on the islands or have found in them the ideal scenario for practicing their sport.

arlos Minguell está considerado como uno de los mejores profesionales en la disciplina de fotografía submarina. Muestra de ello son sus numerosos galardones nacionales e internacionales; ha sido campeón de España en once ocasiones y se proclamó tres veces campeón del mundo. Catalán de nacimiento, Minguell reside en Tenerife desde que tenía apenas dos años. A los 13 años comenzó a bucear en la Playa de Antequera y, a pesar del tiempo transcurrido y del sinfín de inmersiones que ha realizado desde entonces, recuerda “como si fuera hoy” la “sensación de respirar bajo el agua”. Reconoce que parte importante de sus logros resi-

C
arlos Minguell is considered one of the best professionals in the discipline of underwater photography. Proof of this are his numerous national and international awards; he has won the Spanish championship eleven times and the world championship three times. Born in Cataluña, Minguell has been living in Tenerife since he was 2 years old. When he was 13 he started diving in Antequera Beach, and in spite of the time that has lapsed and the great number of dives since, he remembers “as if it were yesterday” the “feeling of breathing underwater”. He acknowledges that an important part of his triumphs is due to the teamwork, which for many years, he carried out together with co-photographer Catalina Perales-Raya. In 1993 he signed up for his first championship in Tenerife, taking the leap then to the championship of the Canary Islands and further on to the Spanish championship. Four years later, he decided to work full time in this fascinating and challenging profession. Nowadays, he takes part in some competitions, whenever time and his professional obligations allow it. His main professional activities are managing a company specialized in underwater photography, teaching courses and the technical direction of the Open Fotosub Isla de El Hierro.

“Siempre sucede algo nuevo en cada inmersión” ¿En qué lugares se proclamó campeón del mundo? El primero fue en Menorca, en 1996, tras ganar mi primer Campeonato de España, el segundo en Noruega, en 1998, y el último en Isla Mauricio, en 2007. Actualmente soy subcampeón, tras quedar segundo clasificado en 2009 en Corea. ¿Cómo sienta el ser considerado en momentos de su trayectoria profesional como el mejor fotógrafo submarino? Como es lógico, sienta muy bien. Aun hoy miro atrás y me sorprende haber ganado once veces el campeonato de España y tres veces el mundial. Era algo impensable cuando empecé en la competición. ¿Los certámenes han quedado atrás o sigue compitiendo? Cada vez dispongo de menos tiempo y recursos para competir. Muy a mi pesar, otras cosas tienen prioridad actualmente, pero seguiré participando en algunas competiciones mientras pueda. ¿Qué supone para usted una nueva inmersión? Siempre me he sentido bien en el mar y he tenido la fortuna de poder ordenar mi vida alrededor del mundo submarino. Como en todo trabajo, existe la rutina, pero cuando
estoy bajo el agua siempre tengo la sensación de que algo nuevo va a suceder. Díganos un lugar que le haya impresionado y otro del que guarde el mejor recuerdo. Por suerte, son muchos los lugares que me han impresionado, y estoy seguro de que conoceré muchos más. Si tuviera que quedarme con alguno, probablemente sería la Isla del Coco, en Costa Rica, un lugar realmente salvaje. En
es más difícil, ser campeón del mundo o dirigir el Open? Bueno, he sido tres veces campeón del mundo y director del Open once…así que debe ser más difícil ganar el Mundial. Ahora en serio, son cosas muy diferentes. Ganar el Mundial es complicado; te enfrentas a muy buenos fotógrafos y hay que entrenar duro y competir muy concentrado, además de tener suerte. Hacer de director del Open es un trabajo de fondo.
“Something new happens in every dive” In which sites did you become world champion? The first time was in Menorca, in 1996, after winning my first Spanish championship, the second time was in Norway, in 1998, and the last in Mauritious, in 2007. I am currently the runner-up, after placing second in 2009 in Korea. How does it feel to be considered at times during your professional career as the best underwater photographer? Obviously, it feels really good. Even today I look back and I am surprised at having won the Spanish championship eleven times and the world championship three times. This was unthinkable when I started competing. Have you left championships behind or are you still competing? It is becoming more and more difficult to secure the time and resources needed to compete. Much to my regret, there are other things which are my priority nowadays, but I will continue to participate in some competitions while I can.

What does a new dive mean to you? I have always felt great in the sea and I have been lucky to be able to organize my life around the underwater world. As in every job, routine exists, but when I am underwater I always have the feeling that something new is going to happen. Tell us one place that has impressed you and of which do you hold your best memory. Luckily, there are many places that have
impressed me, and I am sure that I will see many more. If I had to choose one, it would probably be the Isla del Coco, in Costa Rica, a really wild location. As far as good memories, El Hierro is for me that place that one always keeps in his heart. How do you define underwater photography? Photography has always been something magical for me, even as a child; it is another way of seeing reality. You have been the technical director of the Fotosub Open Isla de El Hierro eleven times, which is harder, being world champion or directing the Open? Well, I have won the world championship three times and have directed the Open eleven times… so it must be harder to win the championship. But seriously, they are two very different things. Winning the world title is complicated, you are up against very good photographers and you have to train seriously and compete in total concentration, and be lucky. Being the director of the Open is an in-depth job of many hours and many months of planning. What does it mean to you to be part of Islas Canarias Water Sports Scuderia? It has always been my pride to carry the image of the Canary Islands over our borders. I am aware that the people who are part of this project are sportsmen and women of international reputation within their disciplines, so the fact that I was chosen to participate representing underwater activities, is undoubtedly an honor.

Carlos Minguell aprendió y perfeccionó su técnica en un lugar fascinante e ideal para la práctica del buceo, con unos fondos marinos espectaculares únicos por la naturaleza volcánica de las Islas Canarias. El lugar por excelencia para la práctica del submarinismo en el Archipiélago es El Hierro, y su certamen anual de fotografía submarina atrae cada año a los profesionales más destacados de esta disciplina. Carlos Minguell fue el ganador de las dos primeras ediciones de Open Fotosub Isla de El Hierro, tras ello la organización le encargó la dirección técnica de este evento deportivo que se celebra en La Restinga. Su experiencia personal ha tenido influencia en la organización del evento, no sólo en cuanto a los aspectos formales, sino también a las valoraciones de las imágenes y el apoyo a la creatividad. “Hemos ido incorporando modificaciones a lo largo de estos años, nuestro objetivo es que los participantes se sientan cómodos, que compitan en igualdad de condiciones y que sus trabajos sean juzgados por jurados competentes y absolutamente independientes”. Y en cuanto a las novedades de este año, explica que el descenso del presupuesto hace que este año el Open sea diferente. “Será un concurso fotográfico, en lugar de una competición pura, y los fotógrafos podrán obtener fotografías en los puntos de inmersión habituales de La Restinga a lo largo de una semana, siempre bajo la tutela de los centros de buceo colaboradores del evento. La famosa gala de clausura será algo más modesta y los premios un poco más bajos, pero tengo la seguridad de que las imágenes serán tan espectaculares como siempre”. Un total de 15.000 euros serán los que estén en juego en esta nueva edición del Open Fotosub Isla de El Hierro, que por supuesto tiene la intención de repetir el éxito de participación de ediciones anteriores. El Open Foto Sub Isla de El Hierro no se ha celebrado al cierre de esta publicación, por lo que daremos cuenta detallada de sus resultados en el siguiente número de esta revista.

Carlos Minguell learnt and perfected his technique in the ideal place for practicing diving; a fascinating place with spectacular and unique sea beds the result of the Canary Islands’ volcanic nature. The quintessential place for the practice of diving in the Archipelago is El Hierro, and its anual underwater photography tournament attracts the most distinguished professionals of this discipline every year. Carlos Minguell was the winner of the first two editions of the Open Fotosub Isla de El Hierro, after this the organization asked him to take on the technical direction of this sporting event which takes place in La Restinga. His personal experience has influenced the organizing of the event, not only in formal aspects, but also in valuing the images and supporting creativity. Minguell points out that “we have been adding on modifications throughout the years, our aim is for the participants to feel comfortable, to compete in equal conditions and that their work be judged by competent and absolutely independant jurors”. The decrease in the budget means that this year the Open is different. “It will be a photographic contest, instead of a pure competition, and the photographers can obtain pictures in the usual inmersion points in La Restinga during the course of a week, always under the guidance of the diving centers who collaborate in the event. The famous closing gala will be simpler and the prizes a bit more modest, but I am conviced that the images will be as spectacular as ever”. The total quantity of the prizes amounts to 15,000€ in this new edition of the Open Fotosub Isla de El Hierro, which of course has every intention of repeating the enrollment success of the previous years. The Open Foto Sub Isla de El Hierro hasn’t taken place at the time of publication, so we will give a detailed account of the results in our next number.

Este sello de la Consejería de Turismo certifica la calidad, profesionalidad y seguridad, de los productos y servicios de todos los establecimientos que se adhieren al mismo, dentro del segmento náutico. Este distintivo forma parte de la nueva estrategia de promoción de la Consejería de Turismo del Gobierno de Canarias, que tiene como objetivo situar
a esta Comunidad como destino preferente frente a otros destinos turísticos, tanto por las características únicas del Archipiélago como por la calidad de sus servicios. he Canary Islands’ promotion strategy, which is based on grouping its offers in four Product Clubs, among which is the Islas Canarias Water Sports Experience, has, up to this day, awarded nearly 600 seals to establishments and organizations from all the Islands, and the number is still increasing. The Islas Canarias Water Sports Experience seal certifies the quality, professionalism and security of those products and services offered by all those establishments, within the nautical sector, which have joined the program. This brand is part of the new promotion strategy of the Tourism Council of the Government of the Canary Islands, whose aim is to position the Islands as the preferred destination over other tourism destinations, both for the unique characteristics of the Archipelago as for the quality of its services.

Nearly 600 establishments and various organizations have joined one of the brands created by the Government of the Canary Islands within its new tourism promotion strategy. The Product Clubs are Family Welcome for the family holiday offer, Volcanic Experience for rural tourism, outdoor activities and nature, Water Sports Experience for nautical tourism, and Wellness Delight, which combines the health and wellness offer. The greatest number of seals awarded up to date correspond to the Islas Canarias Volcanic Experience category. It is the most singular and promotes the offer of different types of activities such as outdoor sports and nature tourism, gastronomic or enological tourism, astronomy and cultural and traditions tourism
All those establishments that obtain the Islas Canarias Water Sports Experience seal must prove the correct compliance with a series of requirements defined by Promotur Turismo Canarias, which guarantee the offer of products and services specific to the nautical tourism demand. Each and every establishment has been through and audit and an implementation process to make sure they adapt to the quality demands required for this Product Club, in this sense, the Tourism Council points out the “effort and commitment” that these establishments have shown throughout the process. Nautical sports, together with the other three priority segments in the tourism strategy of the Canary Islands – family tourism, rural tourism, outdoor activities and nature, and health and wellness-, is one of the best investments in the future of the Archipelago thanks to its ability to differentiate its offer, attracting new markets and ensuring the loyalty of our usual markets. un entorno privilegiado En un entorno privilegiado y a dos minutos de Puerto de Mogán, se encuentra el Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, una instalación que abrió sus puertas en el municipio de Mogán, en la isla de Gran Canaria, hace seis años. El Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa fue uno de los primeros establecimientos adheridos a los cuatro Clubes de Producto. “Esto nos permite tener presencia en las diferentes web oficiales de los sellos, nos ayuda a establecer y mantener unos estándares de calidad y, por supuesto, a ampliar nuestra cartera de clientes”, indica el director del hotel, Alberto Pernalete. El director del hotel no duda al referirse a Puerto de Mogán como una de las zonas más cuidadas de la isla de Gran Canaria. “Hasta ahora era un sitio poco visitado, quedaba relegado a algunas excursiones de un día o de mediodía a la denominada pequeña Venecia, que es preciosa, y a comer algo de pescado. Pero ahora está en pleno desarrollo y nuestro hotel está situado en una zona privilegiada, a dos minutos del puerto. Al mismo tiempo estamos en un lateral del barranco de Mogán, a

breves minutos de las montañas y el centro de la isla”. La situación del establecimiento es muy práctica para los clientes del hotel que quieren realizar actividades como el submarinismo, navegar o pescar en la costa, ya que Mogán tiene un puerto con una oferta deportiva muy amplia. También se puede practicar ciclismo y senderismo en el entorno único de las montañas de esta zona. En sus instalaciones cuenta con un centro de buceo que se puso en marcha en enero de 2009. Noveles que buscan la tranquilidad de hacer inmersiones de su nivel con un instructor, y profesionales que demandan inmersiones de mayor nivel son sus clientes, en su mayoría alemanes. “El grado de satisfacción es alto pues les damos la mayor calidad y seguridad durante las inmersiones”, señala la dirección del centro de buceo. Los buceadores que realizan por primera vez una inmersión en Mogán “quedan complacidos y asombrados por la cantidad y variedad de vida que ofrece esta parte del Atlántico”.
Puerto de Mogán, a privileged environment In a privileged environment and two minutes away from the Port of Mogán, we find the Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa, an establishment which opened its doors six years ago, in the municipality of Mogán, in the island of Gran Canaria. The Hotel Cordial Mogán Playa was one of the first hotel establishments to join the four Product Clubs. “This allows us to be present in the different brands’ official websites, and helps us establish and maintain a standard of quality, and of course, extend our clientele”, states the hotel’s director, Alberto Pernalete. He doesn´t hesitate to refer to the Port of Mogán as one of the most cared for areas in the island of Gran Canaria. “Up to now it was a place with few visitors; they only came in one-day or half-day excursions to the so-called little Venice, which is beautiful, and to lunch on some fish. But at the moment it is in full development and our hotel is located in a privileged area, two minutes away from the port. At the same time we are located on one of the sides of the Mogán ravine, a few minutes way from the mountains and the center of the island”. The location of the hotel is very practical for those clients who wish to carry out activities such as underwater diving, sailing or fishing on the coast, since Mogán has a wide offer of sport activities. You can also practice cycling and hiking in the unique surroundings of the mountains of the area. In its installations, the hotel has a diving center which opened in 2009. Its clientele, mostly of German origin, consists on first-timers who wish to leisurely undertake the dives of their level with their instructor and professionals who demand higher level dives. “The degree of satisfaction is high as we offer the best quality and security during the dives”, points out the director of the diving center. Hace catorce años nació, en Lanzarote, La Santa Surf, una marca cien por cien canaria que dedica parte de su actividad empresarial a la organización de eventos deportivos de gran relevancia en las Islas Canarias, entre ellos mundiales de surf, windsurf y kitesurf.
Un sueño entre olas
L
as playas canarias son conocidas por sus excepcionales condiciones para la práctica de los deportes náuticos y constituyen una constante invitación para disfrutar del mar que baña sus orillas. Consciente de las cualidades de este entorno natural, en 1996 nació La Santa Surf de la mano de Jesús Aguayo Llorente, un hombre relacionado con el mercado del surf, que decidió iniciar un proyecto propio porque creía en el potencial de las Islas para la práctica de este deporte y su estilo de vida. Así, adoptó para la empresa el nombre de La Santa, una de las zonas de Canarias más conocidas por los surfers de todo el mundo. La Santa es un pequeño pueblo de pescadores, que está situado en el noroeste de la isla de Lanzarote, donde se vive principalmente de la pesca y del surf. Es una de las zonas más populares en el mundo entero para la práctica del surf. En un momento en que era muy difícil que se considerara a este deporte con la seriedad y categoría que se merece, nació La Santa Surf con la apertura de un establecimiento dedicado a prendas deportivas y tablas de surf, en Lanzarote. Más tarde, y tras comprobar in situ cómo se movía el mundo en torno al surf en Estados Unidos y las amplias posibilidades que tenía, La Santa Surf se pone manos a la obra en un proyecto pionero en Canarias.

De esta manera va surgiendo la creación de su propia marca, la factoría de tablas de surf (hasta ese momento sólo existían talleres locales) y, al mismo tiempo, la organización y colaboración con los eventos de surf, skate, windsurf, y kitesurf que se llevan a cabo en las Islas, entendiendo que una de las mayores apuestas de promoción e imagen de La Santa Surf son los eventos deportivos. Desde un primer momento se ocupa también del sponsor de surfers locales, en una prueba más de su respaldo al crecimiento de este deporte en las Islas Canarias. El primer evento que organizó fue un campeonato de surf en la playa de San Juan, en Teguise (Lanzarote), Como siempre, el problema económico está presente en todos los comienzos. Aun así, como relata Lorenzo Seis,
responsable de comunicación, La Santa Surf superó las dificultades para encontrar apoyo y patrocinadores que hicieran posible el desarrollo de la competición. Pero quizás el obstáculo más importante eran las opiniones contrarias al proyecto de esta entidad, que tuvo que nadar contra corriente y no escuchar aquellas voces “que nos decían que era imposible y que no podríamos cumplir nuestro sueño”. Durante este tiempo, han sido muchos los aciertos de este equipo que ha luchado por que el surf esté en el nivel que merece, ni más ni menos. Con más de 14 años trabajando en la realización de eventos al más alto nivel, también se cometen errores, pero esto no ha sido obstáculo para la familia de La Santa Surf pues “siempre hay cosas que mejorar, esa es nuestra premisa”.

Aware of the qualities of this natural environment, la Santa Surf was born in 1996 thanks to Jesús Aguayo Llorente, a man with relations to the surf market, who decided to start his own project because he believed in the potential of the Islands for the practice of this sport and its lifestyle. He adopted for the company the name of La Santa, one of the areas of the Canary Islands most known by surfers worldwide. La Santa is a small fishermen’s town located at the north of the island of Lanzarote where the main livelihood is fishing and surf. It is one of the most popular areas in the world for the practice of this sport. At a time when it was very difficult for this sport to be considered with the seriousness and category it deserves, La Santa Surf was born with the opening of an establishment that sold sport clothing and surf boards. Later on, and after realizing firsthand how the world moved around surf in the United States, La Santa Surf begins a pioneer project in the Canaries. This is how the creation of their own brand comes about, the surf board factory (up to that moment there were only local workshops) and, at the same time, the organizing and collaborating with the surfing, skating, windsurfing, and kitesurfing events that take place in the Islands, with the understanding that the best way to promote the image of La Santa Surf is through sporting events. Right from the beginning it also takes care of

sponsoring local surfers, proof of its support to the growth of this sport in the Canary Islands. The first event organized, was the surf championship in playa de San Juan, in Teguise (Lanzarote). As always the economic problem is present in all beginnings. Even then, as recounted by Lorenzo Seis, in charge of communications for the firm, La Santa Surf overcame the difficulties to find support and sponsors which made the championship possible. Although, perhaps the biggest obstacle were the opinions against the company’s project, who had to fight uphill and not listen to those voices “that told us it was impossible and we could not fulfill our dream”.
La ‘familia’ de La Santa Surf La Santa Surf se encarga actualmente de la organización de cuatro campeonatos del mundo de surf, windsurf y kitesurf, sin olvidar las pruebas locales y regionales que apoya cada año. En 14 años, la familia de La Santa ha visto crecer el mundo del surf en las Islas. Esta disciplina deportiva “está muy bien valorada hoy en día”, indica Lorenzo Seis. “Hay surfistas canarios que viven de este deporte viajando por el mundo. En Canarias se celebran cada año tres eventos profesionales y las Islas son reconocidas mundialmente por la calidad de sus olas; esto era algo impensable hace 15 años”. Lorenzo Seis nos habla también de la satisfacción que siente el equipo de personas de La Santa Surf cuando organiza un campeonato. “El mejor momento es cuando acabas y puedes ver las caras de la gente, agradecida por haber creado algo exclusivamente para su disfrute. En cualquier campeonato regional o mundial de los que realizamos, siempre se acerca un competidor o alguien del público a darte las gracias por el evento, y entonces puedes ver en sus ojos que ha disfrutado de verdad”. En cuanto a las playas del Archipiélago, apunta que “muchas de las mejores olas del mundo están en las Islas Canarias”. El año pasado, “unos surfers californianos prefirieron competir en uno de nuestros eventos profesionales en Lanzarote y no asistir a otro de igual categoría que realizaba su propio patrocinador en California. No dudaron ni un momento en venir a Canarias”.

Throughout this time, there have been many good ideas conceived by this team that has fought to bring surf to the level it deserves, not more and not less. After 14 years working at organizing events at the highest level, mistakes are still made, but this has not been an obstacle for the Santa Surf family since “there are always things that can be improved, that is our premise”.
The La Santa Surf “family” La Santa Surf is, currently, in charge of organizing four world surfing, windsurfing and kitesurfing championships, apart from the local and regional tournaments it supports every year. In 14 years, the La Santa family has seen the world of surfing grow in the Canary Islands. According to Lorenzo Seis, “nowadays this sport discipline is very valued”. “There are Canarian surfers who live off this sport travelling around the world. Every year three professional events take place in the Canaries and the Islands are recognized worldwide for the quality of the waves; this was unthinkable 15 years ago”. The communications director also tells us about the satisfaction that the group of people of La Santa Surf gets when they organize a championship. “The best moment is when you finish and you can see the faces of the people, thankful for having created something exclusively for their enjoyment. In every regional or world championship that we organize, always a competitor or someone from the public comes up to thank you for the event, and at that moment you can see in their eyes that they have really enjoyed”. Talking about the beaches of the Archipelago, he mentions that “many of the best waves in the world are in the Canary Islands”. Last year, “some surfers from California preferred to compete in one of our professional events in Lanzarote and not attend one of the same category organized by their own sponsor in California. They did not hesitate for a moment to come to the Canary Islands”. Devoción por la vela Gran Canaria es un lugar privilegiado para la práctica profesional y amateur de este deporte

l fantástico clima de Gran Canaria durante todo el año hace que esta Isla sea un lugar privilegiado para la práctica profesional y amateur de varios tipos de deportes náuticos. En Gran Canaria se dan las mejores condiciones para la práctica de todo tipo de deportes náuticos: vientos ideales para la vela, corrientes marinas que propician la existencia de grandes bancos de peces en la cercanía de la costa, y fondos marinos de gran belleza. La temperatura del agua (entre los 18 grados de invierno y los 22 del resto del año), las infraestructuras portuarias deportivas y las óptimas condiciones de mar y viento son características favorables para navegar durante todo el año. La vela representa la ocasión perfecta para disfrutar del mar y el viento, y saborear la sensación de libertad que propicia la práctica de esta actividad deportiva.
Centros de amarre En la Isla de Gran Canaria se ha desarrollado una completa infraestructura y un conjunto de servicios para la práctica de la vela: puertos deportivos, clubes y federaciones locales de vela, y alquiler de yates o catamaranes para realizar excursiones de un día o excursiones de mayor duración hacen que aficionados y profesionales puedan satisfacer su deseo de navegar. Navegantes noveles y grupos de amigos o familiares también pueden disfrutar del mar y del viento al encontrar la mejor selección de barcos de vela para hacer su sueño realidad y navegar en el Atlántico en embarcaciones patroneadas por profesionales de amplia experiencia. Gran Canaria cuenta con ocho puertos deportivos y en todos ellos se ofrecen los

servicios básicos que permiten una estancia prolongada de las embarcaciones. Los puertos deportivos de la ciudad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y el municipio turístico de Mogán, concretamente Puerto Rico, Pasito Blanco y Mogán, son recintos portuarios de primer orden, con un alto número de puntos de atraque y lugar de encuentro de los entusiastas de la náutica internacional. Estos puertos dan cabida a embarcaciones de recreo y yates de cuantos navegan por las Islas Canarias y recalan en Gran Canaria. El resto de los puertos con capacidad para embarcaciones deportivas son Arguineguín, Taliarte, Las Nieves, y Marina Anfi del Mar.
Palmarés deportivo El deporte de la vela en Gran Canaria es sinónimo de grandes éxitos deportivos en el mundo; la familia Doreste, la familia Blanco, Fernando León o Roberto Molina son apellidos de referencia en todos los continentes, con medallas olímpicas o campeonatos del mundo en su trayectoria deportiva. Además, la isla de Gran Canaria es sede de importantes regatas de cruceros y competiciones de vela ligera a lo largo del año. La última regata de cruceros estaba programada para el mes de septiembre, el Trofeo S.A.R. Príncipe de Asturias, evento de Alto Nivel de Cruceros de la Real Federación Española de Vela, puntuable para el Campeonato de España de Cruceros y la Copa de España de Cruceros Zona de Canarias, que organiza el Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria. De esta regata, en la que participaron 38 embarcaciones, y otras competiciones de vela que han tenido lugar en aguas canarias y que cuentan con el patrocinio de la Consejería de Turismo, daremos detallada información en el siguiente número de esta publicación.

he fantastic year-round climate of Gran Canaria makes this island a privileged place for the professional and amateur practice of various types of nautical sports. Gran Canaria has the best conditions for the practice of all types of water sports: ideal winds for sailing, ocean currents that foster the existence of great fish banks near the coast, and exceptionally beautiful seabeds. The temperature of the water (between 18 degrees in winter and 22 degrees the rest of the year), the port sport infrastructures and the optimal sea and wind conditions are all favourable to sailing throughout the year. Sailing offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the sea and the wind, and savour the sensation of freedom that the practice of this sport has to offer. The island has developed a complete infrastructure and a series of services for the practice of sailing: marinas, local sailing clubs and federations, and yacht or catamaran hire services
for one day or longer excursions, all this so that amateurs and professionals can fulfil their dream of sailing. Inexperienced sailors and groups of friends or families can also enjoy the sea and the wind with the best selection of sail boats to make real their dream of sailing the Atlantic in boats captained by experienced professionals. Gran Canaria has eight marinas and they all offer the basic services that allow an extended stay of the boats. The marinas of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the tourist municipality of Mogán, specifically Puerto Rico, Pasito Blanco and Mogán, are first class ports, with numerous berths and are the meeting point of nautical enthusiasts from around the world. These marinas host recreational boats and yachts while they sail through the Canary Islands and stop at Gran Canaria. Arguineguín, Taliarte, Las Nieves, and Marina Anfi del Mar are the other ports that can hold recreational boats.
In Gran Canaria, sailing is synonymous with outstanding success in this sport around the world; the Doreste family, the Blanco family, Fernando León or Roberto Molina are names with a reputation in all the continents, having won Olympic medals or world championships throughout their career. The island of Gran Canaria is also host to a number of important cruiser races and dinghy races year round. The last cruiser race was programmed for the month of September, the S.A.R. Príncipe de Asturias Cup, a Cruiser High Level event of the Spanish Royal Sailing Federation, which counts towards the Cruiser Spanish Championship and the Cruiser Spanish Cup- Canary Islands Area, and was organized by the Real Club Náutico de Gran Canaria. We will publish detailed information of this race in our next issue, in which 38 sailboats will participate, and of other regattas which have taken place in Canarian waters and are sponsored by the Tourism Council. anarias constituye un lugar de interés especial a nivel internacional, tanto desde el punto de vista científico como turístico, por la gran diversidad de especies de cetáceos presentes, tanto ballenas como delfines, así como por las extraordinarias posibilidades que existen para su estudio y observación. La existencia de treinta especies que transitan por aguas canarias convierte a las Islas Canarias en uno de los lugares del mundo con mayor diversidad de cetáceos. Las características del Archipiélago determinan que esta área presente una gran diversidad de cetáceos en una superficie relativamente pequeña e incluso sostenga a colonias de calderones tropicales y delfines mulares que viven en sus aguas. El suroeste de la isla de Tenerife es un enclave especialmente atractivo para la observación de cetáceos, una actividad que
se puede realizar prácticamente todo el año gracias al privilegiado clima de las Islas y a la existencia de una colonia estable de calderón tropical con un número superior a los 300 ejemplares. Su presencia es tan cercana a la costa, que ha convertido a Tenerife en el primer lugar de Europa en importancia por el número de personas que hacen avistamiento de cetáceos en libertad, una actividad conocida entre nuestros visitantes como whale watching. ‘Whale watching’, an unforgettable experience T
he Canary Islands is an area of special international interest, both from the scientific and the tourism point of view, due to the diversity of cetaceans present, from whales to dolphins, as well as for the extraordinary possibilities it offers for their study and observation. The presence of thirty species in the waters of the Canary Islands makes it one of the places in the world with the greatest diversity of cetaceans. The characteristics of the Archipelago determine that this area holds a great variety of cetaceans in a relatively small area and it even maintains colonies of short-finned pilot whales and bottle-nosed dolphins that live in its waters. The southeast of the island of Tenerife is an especially attractive site for watching cetaceans, an activity that can be carried out throughout the year thanks to the Islands’ privileged climate and the existence of a stable short- finned pilot whale colony with more than 300 specimens. Their habitat is so near to the coast that Tenerife has become the number one place in Europe due to the number of people that enjoy sighting cetaceans in freedom, an activity known among our visitors as whale watching. and dolphin colonies that live, permanently or are passing through, in the stretch that separates the southern coast of Tenerife with the island of La Gomera. o de paso, en el estrecho que separa la costa sur de Tenerife de la isla de La Gomera. Las embarcaciones autorizadas permiten a grandes y pequeños observar desde cerca a estos grandes animales. La actividad está regulada de manera muy estricta al objeto de proteger el extraordinario valor ecológico de estas especies y de su hábitat.
Calderón tropical En las aguas canarias se ha confirmado la presencia de unas treinta especies de cetáceos: misticetos (sin dientes, aquí se incluyen las auténticas ballenas), y cetáceos odontocetos (con dientes, aquí se incluyen los cachalotes, delfines y marsopas). Si bien la mayoría de estas especies están de paso por el Archipiélago, algunas sí tienen poblaciones estables en nuestras aguas, como es el caso del cachalote común (Physeter macrocephalus), del delfín gris (Grampus griseus), el delfín mular (Tursiops truncatus), y como hemos citado antes el calderón tropical o de aleta corta (Globicephala macrorhynchus). Es una especie muy conocida gracias a los estudios científicos y al rechazo unánime provocado por el exterminio al que en otros lugares han sido sometidos, y se han convertido en todo un símbolo de la defensa medioambiental del planeta. Lejos de temerlos, hoy son admirados, siendo muchas las personas que viajan miles de kilómetros para cumplir el sueño de navegar junto a una ballena en su medio natural.
El calderón tropical es una ballena que mide entre 4 y 5 metros de longitud y llega a pesar más de 3.000 kilos. Forman pequeños grupos de madre e hijos que nacen sobre todo entre abril y julio. El avistamiento de éstos y otros cetáceos es muy popular en la isla de Tenerife donde una norma legal regula estrictamente esta activad para preservar el hábitat y modo de vida de la colonia.
Delfín mular Es también conocida la presencia de los delfines mulares, que se encuentran en el canal situado entre Tenerife y La Gomera. El delfín mular es una especie propia de aguas cálidas y templadas como las que bañan las costas meridionales de Tenerife. Las visitas de este animal son comunes, especialmente en la costa suroeste de la Isla, donde existe una población estable que ha elegido estas aguas para criar y permanecer durante todo el año. La tonina, como es conocido localmente, se agrupa en pequeños conjuntos de hasta 20 ejemplares, a menudo muy cerca de la costa.
There are around thirty confirmed species of cetaceans in Canarian waters: baleen whales (without teeth, in which real whales are included), and the toothed whales (with teeth, in which the sperm whales, dolphins and porpoises are included). While most of these species are passing through the Archipelago, some do have stable colonies in our waters, such is the case of the sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), the risso’s dolphin (Grampus griseus), the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus), and as we mentioned before the short-finned pilot whale (Globicephala macrorhynchus). It is a well known species thanks to the scientific studies and the unanimous outrage caused by their extermination in other places, and they have become a symbol of the environmental defense of the planet. Far from being afraid of them, nowadays they are admired; many are the people who travel thousands of kilometers to fulfill their dream of sailing along a whale in their natural habitat. The short-finned pilot whale is between 4 and 5 meters long and can weigh more than 3,000 kilograms. They form small groups made up by the mother and children, born mostly between April and July. The “watching” of these whales as well as other cetaceans is very popular in the island of Tenerife, where there are strict regulations to control this activity and preserve the habitat and lifestyle of the colony. The presence of bottlenose dolphins is also well known. They are located in the channel between the islands of Tenerife and La Gomera. The bottlenose dolphin is common in warm waters like those that bathe the southern coast of Tenerife. Its visits are common, especially in the southeast coast of the island, where there is a stable population that has chosen these waters to breed and remain throughout the year. The tonina, as she is known locally, lives in small groups of up to 20 specimens, frequently very near to the coast.
